Ninety species of leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae, Coleoptera, Insecta) were recorded from die 'Evolution Canyon' microsite (sample area 7000 m2), Lower Nahal Oren, Mt Carmel, Israel. Species richness was significandy ( P =0.018) higher on the drier, climatically more fluctuating savanna-like, soudi-facing slope (SFS, 60 species, sample area 3000 m2) than on the cooler, wetter and climatically less variable north-facing slope (NFS, 44 species, sample area 3000 m2), as in other terrestrial taxa. More species were found common to the local xeric SFS at die Canyon and the regional southern desert areas (Judean and Negev Deserts), than to the NFS and Galilee Mountains, respectively, suggesting that local patterns mirror regional patterns. Interslope differences in microclimate variability range indicate that this factor might be determinant of interslope species richness differences. Most species were collected in the spring (April; 47%) and least in the autumn (September; 3%) over the collecting period from March 1995 to June 1997.  相似文献

We examined diversity levels and patterns of 19 nuclear microsatellites and four chloroplast microsatellites in 275 genotypes of wild barley Hordeum spontaneum, in seven stations at the ‘Evolution Canyon’ (EC) microsite, Lower Nahal Oren, Mt. Carmel, Israel. EC is sharply subdivided ecologically into a tropical savannoid, ‘African’, xeric, south‐facing slope (SFS) abutting the temperate, dense, liveoak, brushwood, ‘European’, mesic, north‐facing slope (NFS). We found the following. (i) 17 of 19 (89.5%) nuDNA simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were polymorphic across all seven subpopulations and three chDNA SSRs were polymorphic. (ii) A total of 216 nuDNA SSR alleles, with a maximum of 23 alleles in a nuclear locus, and ten chDNA SSRs, with a maximum of four alleles in a locus, were registered. (iii) There were striking and significant inter‐ and intraslope diversities, based on the 19 nuDNA SSRs, climaxing with a remarkable genetic distance between the mid‐slope stations on opposite slopes (DA = 0.481), across a distance of 200 m. This genetic distance is as large as that between the H. spontaneum populations of Jerusalem and Sede Boqer, which are separated by 100 km (× 500 larger in transect length). (iv) Slope‐unique alleles (103 = 45.6%) were higher on the ‘European’ than on the ‘African’ slope. Slope‐specific (predominant) alleles (17) were equal on opposite slopes. (v) nuDNA SSR gene diversity was higher on the ‘European’ slope and the opposite was found for the chDNA SSR. (vi) nuDNA SSR genic differentiation was very high between opposite slopes, with Gst = 0.187; for chDNA SSR this value was 0.127. Our results are inexplicable by stochastic processes and suggest that: (i) microclimatic diversifying selection is the major evolutionary, fast‐acting, interslope force, overriding migration and drift, and (ii) ecological stress can generate local, regional and global adaptive patterns, suggesting that natural selection is a major differentiating force of both coding and noncoding SSRs linking micro‐ and macroevolutionary processes. © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2005, 84 , 205–224.  相似文献

Drosophila melanogaster and D. simulans from contrasted microenvironments (south- and north-facing slopes of Lower Nahal Oren Canyon in Israel) were tested for genetic differentiation at microsatellite loci, which might be linked to differential adaptation to local ecological factors. No overall genetic differentiation was observed in either species. This indicates that the contrasted selective pressures on the two sides of the valley are not strong enough to cause population subdivision in highly mobile species such as Drosophila. Significant differences in allele frequencies were observed at two microsatellite loci, but on the whole the level of divergence we observed is far lower than has been reported previously.  相似文献

'Evolution Canyon' (ECI) at Lower Nahal Oren, Mount Carmel, Israel, is an optimal natural microscale model for unravelling evolution in action highlighting the twin evolutionary processes of adaptation and speciation. A major model organism in ECI is wild barley, Hordeum spontaneum , the progenitor of cultivated barley, which displays dramatic interslope adaptive and speciational divergence on the 'African' dry slope (AS) and the 'European' humid slope (ES), separated on average by 200 m. Here we examined interslope single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) sequences and the expression diversity of the drought resistant dehydrin 1 gene ( Dhn1 ) between the opposite slopes. We analysed 47 plants (genotypes), 4–10 individuals in each of seven stations (populations) in an area of 7000 m2, for Dhn1 sequence diversity located in the 5' upstream flanking region of the gene. We found significant levels of Dhn1 genic diversity represented by 29 haplotypes, derived from 45 SNPs in a total of 708 bp sites. Most of the haplotypes, 25 out of 29 (= 86.2%), were represented by one genotype; hence, unique to one population. Only a single haplotype was common to both slopes. Genetic divergence of sequence and haplotype diversity was generally and significantly different among the populations and slopes. Nucleotide diversity was higher on the AS, whereas haplotype diversity was higher on the ES. Interslope divergence was significantly higher than intraslope divergence. The applied Tajima D rejected neutrality of the SNP diversity. The Dhn1 expression under dehydration indicated interslope divergent expression between AS and ES genotypes, reinforcing Dhn1 associated with drought resistance of wild barley at 'Evolution Canyon'. These results are inexplicable by mutation, gene flow, or chance effects, and support adaptive natural microclimatic selection as the major evolutionary divergent driving force.  相似文献

Drosophila melanogaster populations collected at the south-facing slope (SFS) and north-facing slope (NFS) of lower Nahel Oren canyon, Mount Carmel, Israel display significant differences in survival and longevity at temperature, drought, and starvation stresses. Furthermore, significant assortative mating was previously observed between populations of the two slopes. We used a set of 48 microsatellite markers to analyze patterns of genetic differentiation between D. melanogaster populations from both slopes and D. simulans. Consistent with previous reports, we found D. simulans to be well differentiated from D. melanogaster. Genetic differentiation between SFS and NFS D. melanogaster populations was low (F(ST) = 0.0012). Also a tree of individuals based on the proportion of shared alleles and a model-based clustering method provided no evidence for population substructuring.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: We tested whether the local differences in genome size recorded earlier in the wild barley, Hordeum spontaneum, at 'Evolution Canyon', Mount Carmel, Israel, can also be found in other organisms. As a model species for our test we chose the evergreen carob tree, Ceratonia siliqua. METHODS: Genome size was measured by means of DAPI flow cytometry. KEY RESULTS: In adults, significantly more DNA was recorded in trees growing on the more illuminated, warmer, drier, microclimatically more fluctuating 'African' south-facing slope than in trees on the opposite, less illuminated, cooler and more humid, 'European' north-facing slope in spite of an interslope distance of only 100 m at the canyon bottom and 400 m at the top. The amount of DNA was significantly negatively correlated with leaf length and tree circumference. In seedlings, interslope differences in the amount of genome DNA were not found. In addition, the first cases of triploidy and tetraploidy were found in C. siliqua. CONCLUSIONS: The data on C. siliqua at 'Evolution Canyon' showed that local variability in the C-value exists in this species and that ecological stress might be a strong evolutionary driving force in shaping the amount of DNA.  相似文献

Significant assortative mating in laboratory studies has been previously shown between two populations of Drosophila melanogaster collected from micro-climactically contrasting and opposing slopes of 'Evolution Canyon' (Lower Nahal Oren, Israel; Korol et al., 2000). Coupled with evidence that the two populations are adapted to their respective environments, this has been suggested as a rare example of ongoing behaviourally mediated speciation occurring in the face of gene flow. Reproductive isolation between these populations, however, has never been confirmed by replicate experiments in an independent laboratory. For this reason, we tested recent collections of these populations for premating isolation in both the original (Haifa) and a new (Burnaby) laboratory under a variety of experimental protocols. Although non-random mating was found in the majority of trials conducted in Haifa, we were unable to replicate these strong results in Burnaby. Most notably, we failed to detect assortative mating in four separate double choice experiments. Significant non-random mating was detected, however, in three of six single choice experiments in Burnaby, suggesting that the populations are behaviourally differentiated in some manner. Why nonrandom mating was weaker in Burnaby than Haifa is not understood, but suggests that assortative mating may be sensitive to unknown environmental factors.  相似文献

In 59 samples of periphyton and phytoplankton collected in 2002 - 2003 from the Nahal Qishon (Qishon River), northern Israel, we found 178 species from seven divisions of algae and cyanoprocaryotes. Diatoms, clorophytes, and cyanoprocaryotes prevail. Nitzschia and Navicula (Bacillariophyta) are the most abundant. Most of the species are cosmopolitan or widespread, except Lagynion janei (Chrysophyta), which is endemic for the Mediterranean Realm. About 17% of species (26) are new for Israel and five of them represent the first recorded genera: Crinalium endophyticum Crow, Actinocyclus normanii (Gregory) Hustedt, Rhizoclonium hieroglyphicum (Agardh) Kütz (Chlorophyta), Lagynion janei Bourelly, and Stylococcus aureus Chodat. Most of them come from a rare riverine assemblage with red alga Audouinella pygmea, as well as from the estuarine assemblage. Alkaliphiles predominate among the indicators of acidity, with few acidophiles confined to the communities under the impact of industrial wastes. Among the indicators of salinity, most numerous are the oligohalobien-indifferents and species adapted to a moderate salinity level. The relative species richness of ecological groups and the indices of saprobity are correlated with changes in conductivity, pH, and N-nitrate concentration. Indicators of organic pollution fall in the range of betameso- to alfamesosaprobic self-purification grades. Our studies show ecological significance of the Nahal Qishon as a model for a strongly disturbed aquatic ecosystem in the coastal zone of eastern Mediterranean.  相似文献

Twenty eight microsatellite markers were used to analyze genetic divergence in tandem dinucleotide repeated DNA regions between two edaphic subpopulations of Triticum dicoccoides growing on the contrasting terra rossa and basalt soilsfrom a microsite at Tabigha, north of the Sea of Galilee, Israel. The terra rossa soil niche was drier and more stressful than the basalt throughout the growing season (November to May). Significant microsatellite divergence in allele distribution, repeat length, genetic diversity, and linkage disequilibria were found between emmer wheat from the two soil types over two short transects of 100 m each. Soil-specific and -unique alleles and linkage disequilibria were observed in the terra rossa and basalt subpopulations. A permutation test showed that the effects of random genetic drift were very low for the significant genetic diversity at microsatellite loci between the two subpopulations, suggesting that an adaptive molecular pattern derived by edaphic selection may act upon variation of the microsatellites. The fire-related variations in culturable microfungal communities in the soil of the Mount Carmel forest, Israel, were examined by comparing the communities from burned and adjacent unburned soil plots under pine and oak trees – collected 6, 18, and 26 months after the fire. A total of 82 species representing 44 genera were isolated using the soil dilution plate method. The results showed that the fire had strongly influenced the composition and structure of microfungal communities. The fire remarkably changed physical and chemical properties of the environment, decreasing water holding capacity, organic matter and total nitrogen content in the burned soil. These changes supported abundant development of fast-growing mycoparasitic species (Clonostachys rosea and Trichoderma spp.) and caused significant decrease in species richness. The variations in community composition were much more expressed in the burned soils under oak vegetation as compared with the pine trees. In the oak burned soils, the contribution of the “mesic” component, Penicillium spp., was markedly lower, whereas the contribution of the “xeric”, stress-selected component, melanin-containing species, was higher than in the unburned communities. Such variations can be also considered as a community response to the fire-related decrease in water and nutrient content in the burned soils.  相似文献

Background

Adaptation is an evolutionary process in which traits in a population are tailored by natural selection to better meet the challenges presented by the local environment. The major discussion relating to natural selection concerns the portraying of the cause and effect relationship between a presumably adaptive trait and selection agents generating it. Therefore, it is necessary to identify trait(s) that evolve in direct response to selection, enhancing the organism''s fitness. “Evolution Canyon” (EC) in Israel mirrors a microcosmic evolutionary system across life and is ideal to study natural selection and local adaptation under sharply, microclimatically divergent environments. The south-facing, tropical, sunny and xeric “African” slope (AS) receives 200%–800% higher solar radiation than the north-facing, temperate, shady and mesic “European” slope (ES), 200 meters apart. Thus, solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is a major selection agent in EC influencing the organism-environment interaction. Melanin is a trait postulated to have evolved for UV-screening in microorganisms. Here we investigate the cause and effect relationship between differential UVR on the opposing slopes of EC and the conidial melanin concentration of the filamentous soil fungus Aspergillus niger. We test the working hypothesis that the AS strains exhibit higher melanin content than strains from the ES resulting in higher UV resistance.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We measured conidial melanin concentration of 80 strains from the EC using a spectrophotometer. The results indicated that mean conidial melanin concentration of AS strains were threefold higher than ES strains and the former resisted UVA irradiation better than the latter. Comparisons of melanin in the conidia of A. niger strains from sunny and shady microniches on the predominantly sunny AS and predominantly shady ES indicated that shady conditions on the AS have no influence on the selection on melanin; in contrast, the sunny strains from the ES displayed higher melanin concentrations.

Conclusions/Significance

We conclude that melanin in A. niger is an adaptive trait against UVR generated by natural selection.  相似文献

Understanding the behavioral adaptations and subsistence strategies of Middle Paleolithic humans is critical in the debate over the evolution and manifestations of modern human behavior. The study of faunal remains plays a central role in this context. Until now, the majority of Levantine archaeofaunal evidence was derived from late Middle Paleolithic sites. The discovery of faunal remains from Misliya Cave, Mount Carmel, Israel (>200 ka), allowed for detailed taphonomic and zooarchaeological analyses of these early Middle Paleolithic remains. The Misliya Cave faunal assemblage is overwhelmingly dominated by ungulate taxa. The most common prey species is the Mesopotamian fallow deer (Dama mesopotamica), followed closely by the mountain gazelle (Gazella gazella). Some aurochs (Bos primigenius) remains are also present. Small-game species are rare. The fallow deer mortality pattern is dominated by prime-aged individuals. A multivariate taphonomic analysis demonstrates (1) that the assemblage was created solely by humans occupying the cave and was primarily modified by their food-processing activities; and (2) that gazelle carcasses were transported complete to the site, while fallow deer carcasses underwent some field butchery. The new zooarchaeological data from Misliya Cave, particularly the abundance of meat-bearing limb bones displaying filleting cut marks and the acquisition of prime-age prey, demonstrate that early Middle Paleolithic people possessed developed hunting capabilities. Thus, modern large-game hunting, carcass transport, and meat-processing behaviors were already established in the Levant in the early Middle Paleolithic, more than 200 ka ago.  相似文献

The transition from the Lower to the Middle Paleolithic in the Levant is a crucial event in human evolution, since it may involve the arrival of a new human population. In the current study, we present thermoluminescence (TL) dates obtained from 32 burnt flints retrieved from the late Lower Paleolithic (Acheulo-Yabrudian) and Early Middle Paleolithic (Mousterian) layers of Misliya Cave, Mount Carmel, Israel. Early Middle Paleolithic industries rich in Levallois and laminar products were assigned mean ages ranging from ∼250 to ∼160 ka (thousands of years ago), suggesting a production of this industry during MIS 7 and the early part of MIS 6. The mean ages obtained for the samples associated with the Acheulo-Yabrudian (strengthened by an isochron analysis) indicate a production of this cultural complex ∼250 ka ago, at the end of MIS 8. According to the Misliya TL dates, the transition from the Lower to the Middle Paleolithic in the site took place at the limit MIS 8/7 or during the early part of MIS 7. The dates, together with the pronounced differences in lithic technology strongly suggest the arrival of a new population during this period.  相似文献

Genetic diversity at 28 microsatellite loci was studied in a natural population of Triticum dicoccoides at the Ammiad microsite, north of the Sea of Galilee, Israel. This microsite was subdivided into four major habitats, North, Valley, Ridge and Karst, and further subdivided into nine subhabitats. The units thus defined showed strong and highly significant differentiation in ecological factors; in particular with respect to cover, proximity and height of rocks, and surface soil moisture after early rains. The results showed that allele distributions at microsatellite loci were nonrandom and associated with habitats. Significant genetic differentiation and variation in repeat number were found among subpopulations in the four major habitats and nine subhabitats. Habitat-specific and -unique alleles and linkage disequilibria were observed in the Karst subpopulation. The subpopulations dwelling in drier habitats and subhabitats showed higher genetic diversities at microsatellite loci. These results suggest that natural selection, presumably through aridity stress, acts upon microsatellite divergence predominantly on noncoding sequences, thereby contributing to differences in fitness. Species of microfungi were isolated from both the north facing slope (NFS) and the south facing slope (SFS) of Evolution Canyon, Mount Carmel, Israel. They were examined for growth rates before and after exposure to 10(6) rads of cobalt 60 irradiation. Above 10(6) rads all growth ceased after 1 day following exposure.  相似文献

We studied the endolichenic fungal communities from saxicolous lichens occupying the cobbles at Nahal Boker, the central Negev Desert, Israel. Overall, 101 species belonging to 64 genera were isolated from 12 lichen species collected in three seasons from the south-facing slope (SFS) and north-facing slope (NFS) of the wadi. The endolichenic communities possessed a set of traits, which helped them to cope with harsh internal and external conditions. It included a prevalence of melanin-containing fungi with thick-walled and multicellular spores and a comparatively high contribution of thermotolerant species and species with meiospore-producing life cycle stage at the more microclimatically severe SFS. Species richness and isolate density of endolichenic communities was the highest in fruticose lichens with thick and wrinkled thalli, and the lowest in endolithic species possessing thin and smooth thalli. The communities from lichens formed a more diverse group than those from surrounding cobbles probably due to the influence of various species of lichens belonging to different growth forms.  相似文献

We examined the depth-wise distribution of microfungi through 0–50-cm crusted sandy and playa profiles at the Nizzana research site, the Negev desert, Israel. A total of 188 species from 77 genera was isolated using the soil dilution plate method. Density of microfungal isolates sharply decreased with depth highly positively correlating with organic matter content at the sandy profiles. High load of solar radiation (at the surface) as well as strongly limited aeration, water infiltration, and increased salinity (at the playa depth) led to dominance of melanin-containing species with large, multicellular conidia both in the topsoil of all profiles and in the deep playa layers, while at 1–30 cm, species producing light-colored small one-celled conidia mostly prevailed. In that way, the above vertical variations resemble differences in the composition of topsoil microfungal communities found between the sites located in the Negev desert and in the Mediterranean region of Israel.  相似文献

Spatiotemporal diversity at 35 allozyme loci was assayed over 6 years in 1,207 individuals of wild emmer wheat (Triticum dicoccoides)from a microgeographic microsite, Ammiad, north Israel. This analysis used new methods and two additional sample sets (1988 and 1993) and previous allozymic data (1984–1987). This microsite includes four major habitats (North-facing slope, Valley, Ridge, and Karst) that show topographic and ecological heterogeneity. Significant temporal and spatial variations in allele frequencies and levels of genetic diversity were detected in the four subpopulations. Significant associations were observed among allele frequencies and gene diversities at different loci, indicating that many allele frequencies change over time in the same or opposite directions. Multiple regression analysis showed that variation in soil-water content and rainfall distribution in the growing season significantly affected 10 allele frequencies, numbers of alleles at 8 loci, and gene diversity at 4 loci. Random genetic drift and hitchhiking models may not explain such locus-specific spatiotemporal divergence and strong allelic correlation or locus correlation as well as the functional importance of allozymes. Natural ecological selection, presumably through water stress, might be an important force adaptively directing spatiotemporal allozyme diversity and divergence in wild emmer wheat at the Ammiad microsite. The Southern Levant is a pivotal area for the study of hominin paleoecology during the Lower Paleolithic, because of its location on the out-of-Africa dispersal route and its significant ecological diversity. Important information has been gained by archaeofaunal studies, which usually reveal that exploitation of diverse Mediterranean environments with woodlands, marshes and lake margins, represents a dominant subsistence strategy for Lower Paleolithic hominins. Here, we present new taxonomic and taphonomic data from two sites in the southern coastal plain of the Southern Levant, at the fringe of the Negev Desert: Bizat Ruhama (Early Pleistocene) and Nahal Hesi (Middle Pleistocene). The sites preserve anthropogenic faunas, with the former signaling a marrow-exploitation strategy, perhaps related to scavenging from carnivore kills, and the latter showing evidence for primary access to fleshed ungulate carcasses. The species composition of these Northern Negev sites is unique for the Levantine Lower Paleolithic in that these sites lack typical woodland and riparian species, probably indicating an open, relatively uniform environment with patchy water sources and trees, much like this semiarid region today. Bizat Ruhama and Nahal Hesi are among the only Levantine Lower Paleolithic faunas associated with such a setting, thereby widening the known spectrum of environments exploited by hominins in the region. It is suggested that the two sites, coupled with the nearby Late Pleistocene evidence, reflect a largely stable semiarid environment on the northwestern fringe of the Negev Desert throughout much of the Pleistocene.  相似文献
