The aim of this study was to investigate arcadian and ultradian variations in menopausal hot flash. The number of hot flashes per 2-hr period was collected from 25 diurnally-active, perimenopausal women for 1 week in January or February of each year for 3 consecutive years. Fourteen women were experiencing natural menopause (NM) (mean age 51.9 years) and 11 were experiencing surgically-induced menopause (SIM) (mean age 52.0 years). The difference in the number of hot flashes between the two types of menopause at each clock time was not statistically significant; neither was the mean number of hot flashes per 24 hr different between the two groups (Student's f-test). Data when normalized for each woman and placed end-to-end revealed by cosinor analysis circadian rhythmicity in the SIM group (P =0.02) but not in the NM group. A 12-hr periodicity was detected in both groups (P< 0.001 for both). An 8-hr rhythm was detected only for the NM group (P = 0.04). Both groups combined exhibited statistically significant rhythmicities with periods of 24 hr (p= 0.003), 12 hr (P<0.001) and 8 hr (P= 0.005). Regardless of the type of menopause, the women could be separated into two groups based on the temporal pattern of hot flashes during the day. One group was defined by the occurrence of peak frequency of flashes during the morning (0400–0959), while the second group was defined by the occurrence of the peak in the evening (1600–2159). The difference between the two groups in the number of hot flashes during the morning wasstatistically significant (Student's r-test, P = 0.009) as was the number of hot flashes in the evening (Student's r-test, P= 0.03).  相似文献

Hot flashes during the climacteric years have long been a frequent clinical complaint, generally considered within the realm of the internist, gynecologist, or endocrinologist. Yet the underlying mechanism of hot flashes remains unknown. Only within the past 10 years has there been significant research on hot flashes as a disturbance of thermoregulation. This paper focuses on thermoregulatory aspects of hot flashes, reviewing current knowledge of the thermoregulatory physiology and endocrinology of hot flashes and discussing future avenues for research. Hot flashes are compared with fever in terms of thermoregulatory changes and speculated mechanisms. Although several substances in the peripheral circulation are found in increased concentrations during hot flashes, none is a trigger for a hot flash. The pattern of hot flash occurrence is striking in its regularity, and the possibility of endogenous rhythmicity is discussed. Recently, investigators have begun to explore a primate model of menopausal hot flashes. These studies are summarized. Finally, the multiple effects of estrogen on various systems of the body and their interrelationships are discussed. An understanding of the mechanism of hot flashes would not only be of importance to women suffering with hot flashes but would further our knowledge of thermoregulatory function and the interactions between thermoregulatory and reproductive systems.  相似文献

Laboratory studies suggest that hot flashes are triggered by small elevations in core body temperature acting within a reduced thermoneutral zone, i.e., the temperature range in which a woman neither shivers nor sweats. In the present study, it was hypothesized that women in different populations develop climate-specific thermoneutral zones, and ultimately, population-specific frequencies of hot flashes at menopause. Correlations were predicted between hot flash frequencies and latitude, elevation, and annual temperatures. Data on hot flash frequencies were drawn from 54 studies. Pearson correlation analyses and simple linear regressions were applied, first using all studies, and second using a subset of studies that included participants only to age 60 (n = 36). Regressions were repeated with all studies, controlling for method of hot flash assessment. When analyses were restricted to studies that included women up to age 60, average temperature of the coldest month was a significant predictor of hot flash frequency (P < 0.01), explaining 29.2% of the variation in hot flash frequency. In a separate equation, the difference between hottest and coldest temperatures was also a significant predictor (P < 0.01), explaining 26.4% of the variation in hot flash frequency. When regressions used all studies but controlled for method of hot flash assessment, average temperature of the coldest month, difference between hottest and coldest temperatures, and mean annual temperature were significant predictors of hot flash frequency. Women reported fewer hot flashes in warmer temperatures, and more hot flashes with increasing seasonality. These results suggest that acclimatization to coldest temperatures or sensitivity to seasonality may explain part of the population variation in hot flash frequency.  相似文献

The phase-response curve (PRC) for the circadian rhythm in the flight activity of a cave-dwelling bat, Hipposideros speoris, constructed with 0.063-msec light flashes, reported here is the first of its kind for any circadian system and is unlike any other phase-response curves constructed for other nocturnal animals. The phase responding with maximal advances (90 degrees) and the phase responding with maximal delays (0 degree) of this PRC were exposed to light flashes of systematically varying durations from 0.083 to 3.33-msec. For 0 degree phase, the flashes of 0.063-3.33 msec effected delay phase shifts of comparable magnitude. For 90 degrees phase, the flashes of 0.063-1.0 msec effected advance phase shifts, whereas 3.33-msec flashes effected unmistakable delay phase shifts with advancing transients. Phase shifts evoked with such light flashes are further compared with phase shifts evoked with pulses of longer durations (15 min to 2.8 hr) for H. speoris.  相似文献

This paper reports an attempt to measure the dependency of the visual temporal frame on cortical rhythms. As a probe, we used two short flashes of a point light source separated in time by a variable interstimulus interval (ISI). Subjects were asked to judge whether the two short flashes were perceived as simultaneous or as sequential. The onset of the light flashes was triggered at four chosen phases of the occipital alpha rhythm of the viewing subject, and the probabilities of perceived simultaneity at various ISI's were obtained. Data from three experimental subjects show that the triggering phase produced a significant shift along the ISI-axis, thus changing the probability of perceived simultaneity. The magnitude of this shift varied substantially across subjects. These results show that, although cortical rhythms correlate with perceptual framing as previously reported (Varela et al., 1981), the nature of this dependency is different than previously suggested: a visual temporal frame seems to be a local event at the cortex, and not a global coordination uniformly reflected in the alpha rhythm.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo describe 3 patients with long-standing hot flashes, excessive sweating, and fatigue whose symptoms were ameliorated with metformin.MethodsIn this case series, we report the findings of laboratory evaluations, including assessments for thyroid, gonadal, adrenal, and pancreatic disorders, in 3 patients referred for endocrine evaluation. A 75-g oral glucose tolerance test with measurement of fasting and postprandial glucose and insulin concentrations was conducted. A trial of metformin, 500 mg twice daily, was initiated in all patients.ResultsEvaluation of factors that are associated with hot flashes and increased sweating did not establish the cause of the patients’ symptoms. The 3 patients had normal glucose tolerance test results and hyperinsulinemia. Metformin therapy markedly relieved the symptoms in all patients.ConclusionsHyperinsulinemia without hypoglycemia may produce a sympathoexcitatory response that manifests as hot flashes and increased sweating. ObjectiveTo present a case of primary menopausal insomnia with hot flashes to introduce recent changes in technology and nomenclature of sleep medicine and to review presentation, diagnosis, and therapies for menopausal insomnia.MethodsClinical findings and results of sleep evaluation in the menopausal study patient are presented with details about polysomnography performed before and after therapy with pregabalin.ResultsA 56.5-year-old female athlete with severe hot flashes and insomnia of 12 years duration was treated with pregabalin, which ameliorated the hot flashes and sweats and improved sleep quality and architecture. Menopause is associated with hormonal and metabolic changes that disrupt sleep. Disruption of sleep can in turn lead to morbidity and metabolic sequelae. Hormonal treatment, although effective, carries risks unacceptable to many patients and physicians. To date, nonhormonal therapies of symptomatic menopause have not been objectively studied for effects on sleep efficiency and architecture. Primary menopausal insomnia is insomnia associated with menopause and not attributable to secondary causes. Polysomnographically, it seems characterized by a high percentage of slow-wave (N3) sleep, decreased rapid eye movement sleep, cyclic alternating pattern, and arousals.ConclusionsPrimary menopausal insomnia is probably mediated through a mechanism separate from hot flashes, and one can occur without the other. Thermal dysregulation and sleep abnormalities of menopause are probably related to more general changes mediated through loss of estrogenic effects on neuronal modulation of energy metabolism, and more clinical direction is expected as this research field develops. Identification of sleep disorders in menopausal women is important, and polysomnographic evaluation is underused in both clinical and research evaluations of metabolic disturbances. The Mekong giant catfish Pangasianodon gigas is endemic to the Mekong River basin, and is recognized as endangered species, largely due to overfishing and development of the river basin. We monitored food intake of P. gigas in a stable environment in an aquarium over a 6-year period and analyzed their feeding rhythm and fasting periods. The daily food intake for each fish was recorded from 18 June 2004 to 17 June 2010. The feeding rhythm or pattern was determined by the fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis. The FFT analysis revealed that different cycles of feeding rhythm (168.8, 313.1, and 365.3 days) in three catfishes and no observable cycles in two catfishes. However, three catfishes showed subordinate peaks with approximately 365 days (365.3 days for all). These suggest that, at least, four of five catfish had have approximately 365-days feeding cycle. We also showed that all catfish undergo long-term fasting periods (> 20 days). Of note, the feeding/fasting pattern coincides with the wet/dry seasons in Thailand, which also corresponds to the abundance of the catfish food resource (Cladophora spp.). We found that P. gigas exhibit a seasonal feeding rhythm that is synchronized by food availability. Furthermore, we found that the seasonal feeding rhythm was gradually dampened over time, suggesting that the observed seasonal feeding rhythm with long-term fasting of the catfish is likely controlled by an endogenous clock system. To our knowledge, this is the first case of quantification of the seasonal feeding rhythm with fasting periods in teleost fish.  相似文献

The circadian rhythms are involved in the photostimulation of seasonal responses in migratory blackheaded buntings. Here, we investigated whether changes in daily levels and rhythm in corticosterone (cort) and insulin secretions were associated with transitions in the photoperiodic seasonal states. Buntings were exposed to short days to maintain the winter (photosensitive) non-migratory state, and to long days for varying durations to induce the premigratory, migratory (shown by migratory restlessness at night, Zugunruhe) and summer non-migratory (photorefractory) states. We monitored activity patterns, and measured plasma cort and insulin levels at six and four times, respectively, over 24 h in each seasonal state. Buntings were fattened and weighed heavier, and exhibited intense nighttime activity in the migratory state. The daytime activity patterns also showed seasonal differences, with a bimodal pattern with morning and evening activity bouts only in the summer non-migratory state. Further, the average baseline hormone levels were significantly higher in premigratory and migratory than in the winter non-migratory state. Both cort and insulin levels showed a significant daily rhythm, but with seasonal differences. Whereas, cort rhythm acrophases (estimated time of peak secretion over 24 h) were at night in the winter non-migratory, premigratory and migratory states, the insulin rhythm acrophases were found early in the day and night in winter and summer non-migratory states, respectively. These results suggest that changes in daily levels and rhythm in cort and insulin mediate changes in the physiology and behavior with photostimulated transition in seasonal states in migratory blackheaded buntings.  相似文献

In the present study, we tested the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral group treatment (CBGT) for hot flashes in menopausal women. Treatment was administered over 8, 90 min weekly sessions and consisted of education, relaxation training and cognitive restructuring. Nineteen women meeting STRAW staging criteria for the menopause transition (stages –1 to +1) were randomly assigned to immediate or delayed treatment (wait list) and were asked to monitor their hot flashes and night sweats prospectively. They also completed questionnaires, including the Womens Health Questionnaire and the Menopause Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire to determine psychosocial benefits of treatment. Results suggested that the CBGT was moderately successful in reducing the frequency of total vasomotor symptoms [F (1, 17) = 6.16, p < .01], as measured by daily symptom diaries. While there were arithmetic improvements in psychosocial functioning in this sample, these results were not significant. Despite the limitations of small sample size and possible placebo effect, this pilot study supports the notion that cognitive-behavioral interventions aimed at reducing vasomotor symptoms may be of value for menopausal hot flashes when administered in a small-group format.  相似文献

Analysis of the division rates of Paramecium aurelia (mutant), Blepharisma undulans, and Histrio complanatus grown separately in pedigree isolation culture with the same culture medium, and in the same room at any given time, for a period of 3 years, discloses a secular trend and a seasonal rhythm for each organism. The seasonal rhythm is a yearly cycle with a maximum during July. 2. After removal of the effects of trend and seasonal rhythm, no correlation is found between the division rates of the several organisms. The distribution of the division rates is then one of chance order, except for large deviations known to be associated with changes in the culture technique. Each organism has a division rate varying independently of the others. 3. Consequently, seasonal rhythm alone has forced similar variations in the division rates of these three protozoans. The seasonal effect is gradually lost when the animals are raised for several years under laboratory conditions. Examination of the literature discloses other similar cases. 4. It is clear that unless all of the conditions of experiment are kept constant, one must analyze all protozoan division rate data in some such manner as that here presented before any conclusions may be drawn as to the existence of "cycles" or "rhythms."  相似文献

We investigated seasonal changes in hormonal and thermoregulatory responses. Eight volunteers were subjected to the experiment at four times of the year: around the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, and at the summer and winter solstices at latitude 35° N. Plasma antidiuretic hormone (ADH), angiotensin II (ANG II), aldosterone (ALD) and plasma renin activity (PRA) were analyzed before and after water immersion. Seasonal changes in thermoregulatory responses were assessed by measuring core temperature and sweat rate during immersion of the leg in hot water (at 42°C) for 30 min in a room maintained at 26°C. The concentration of plasma ADH and ALD before water immersion was significantly higher in summer than in other seasons. The concentrations of ANG II and PRA did not show seasonal variations. Changes in tympanic temperature during water immersion showed significant differences between seasons, and were higher in winter than in other seasons. The sweat rate was significantly higher in summer than in other seasons. In summary, ADH and ALD concentrations displayed a seasonal rhythm with marked elevation in summer; this may be a compensative mechanism to prevent dehydration from increased sweat loss during summer due to heat acclimatization.  相似文献

1. The diurnal changes in the level of total protein, cortisol, T3 and T4 were studied in four barren and four pregnant standard-bred mares, kept and examined under the same conditions. 2. Blood samples were taken every 4 hr. for one day each month, throughout one year. 3. In barren mares, a diurnal rhythm in cortisol level (acrophase at 0530 hr in summer and at 0830 hr in winter) and in T3 level (acrophase at 1330 hr in summer and at 1800 hr in winter) was found. 4. In pregnant mares, a diurnal rhythm in cortisol level only till 5th month of pregnancy was observed. 5. A diurnal rhythm in T3 level was found throughout the pregnancy, with acrophase always at 1400 hr. 6. No diurnal rhythm in the total protein content and in the T4 level was observed. 7. In both groups of mares the seasonal cyclicity in T3 and T4 levels were found. A seasonal cyclicity in cortisol level was found only in pregnant mares. 8. Pregnancy abolished seasonal cyclicity in total protein and showed it in cortisol level. 9. Pregnancy in mares modifies diurnal rhythms as well as seasonal cycles in secretion and metabolism of the hormones studied.  相似文献

The population ecology of the beetle Speonomus hydrophilus , occurring both in caves (reduced fluctuations in many abiotic parameters) and under the deepest layer of soil in mountains (MSS, more exposed to climatic variations), was studied in four habitats in the French central Pyrenees We have assessed some of the characteristics of the environment where these populations occur c g physical data (altitude and exposure), geologic data (nature of the parent-rock) and abiotic parameters (temperature with its seasonal fluctuations) and we investigated the relative importance of environmental structure and ecological characteristics on the temporal organization of S hydrophilus and the troglobitic fauna which cohabits The climatic study shows the existence of an annual thermal cycle which is regular and well marked for the MSS habitats but slightly out of phase with the surface cycle These periodic variations however slight may be stressful for troglobitic species In the MSS populations, the phenology of the entire community is reflected in the pattern seen in Speonomus The analysis of faunal profiles shows that samples follow the same seasonal succession during the annual cycle A potential seasonal rhythm of emergence may reflect a seasonal rhythm of vitellogenesis which produces a rhythm of egg-laying  相似文献

The gray mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus), a prosimian primate, exhibits seasonal rhythms strictly controlled by photoperiodic variations. Previous studies indicated that longevity can be altered by long-term acceleration of seasonal rhythms, providing a model for assessing various aspects of aging. To assess the effect of aging and accelerated aging on the circadian system of this primate, we compared the circadian rhythm of the locomotor activity in adult mouse lemurs (2-4.5 years, n = 9), aged mouse lemurs (5-9 years, n = 10), and adult mouse lemurs that had been exposed from birth to a shortened seasonal photoperiodic cycle (2-4.5 years, n = 7). Compared to adult animals, aged mouse lemurs showed a significant increase in intradaily variability and an advanced activity onset. Aging was characterized by a decrease in amplitude, with both a decrease in nocturnal activity and an increase in daytime activity. When maintained in constant dim red light, aged animals exhibited a shortening of the free-running period (22.8 +/- 0.1 h) compared to adult animals (23.5 +/- 0.1 h). A 3- to 5-year exposure to an accelerated seasonal photoperiodic rhythm ("annual" duration of 5 months) in accelerated mouse lemurs produced disturbances of the locomotor activity rhythm that resembled those of aged mouse lemurs, whether animals were studied in entrained or in free-running conditions. The present study demonstrated a weakened and fragmented locomotor activity rhythm during normal aging in this primate. Increasing the number of expressed seasonal cycles accelerated aging of parameters related to circadian rhythmicity in adult animals.  相似文献

Human breathing and cardiac rhythms become synchronized during voluntary respiration of a subject with the rate higher than the initial cardiac rate. This phenomenon is observed during driving of the breathing rhythm with rhythmical flashes of a photostimulator lamp. The broadest bandwidth of the range of cardiorespiratory synchronization was observed in phlegmatic children, and the narrowest bandwidth was observed in choleric children. The dependence of characteristics of combined heart and breathing rhythmogenesis on temperamental types is determined by the properties of the nervous system, i.e., force, balance, and flexibility.  相似文献

Seasonality is a phenomenon that is characterized by changes over the year in sleep, mood, behaviour, appetite and body weight. In humans, seasonal variations have been found in certain variables, such as lipid variables and body mass index. We hypothesize that this rhythm could influence the expected variation of the levels of biochemical variables in cases of body weight loss. Thus, the goal of this study was to observe whether the time of year in which bariatric surgery (BS) took place modulated the changes in several variables related to glucidic and lipid metabolism. Blood samples were obtained from 24 women and 10 men before BS and 1 and 3 months after BS. We calculated the percentage of variation that occurred for each individual and for each variable as a function of the time of the year. Data were adjusted to a 12-month period sinusoidal curve, with significance being set at p < 0.05. The results showed that almost all of the studied variables changed due to the BS according to a seasonal rhythm. Most of the variables showed a decrease that was most prominent in winter. In the cases of body mass index (BMI), adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH), and cortisol, the highest variation occurred in winter. Insulin and cholesterol in high-density lipoproteins (cHLD) variations were higher in springtime. Glucose variation showed a decrease after surgery with acrophase in summer-fall and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in spring-summer. Ghrelin levels showed increases with a rhythm of variation with an acrophase in summer-fall. The seasonal rhythm found in this study fits nearly with the inverse of the endogenous circannual rhythm of the variables studied. The time of the year when the highest variation takes place is related to the circannual rhythm of the variable. The results agree with the manifestation of seasonal rhythm in human biochemical variables, which are reflected in the responses to weight loss after BS.  相似文献

In many birds, reproduction, molt, migration and other seasonal activities are controlled by endogenous circannual rhythmicity. Under constant conditions, this rhythm persists for many cycles with a period deviating from 12 months. Whether or not the rhythm is expressed depends on day length (photoperiod), which thus represents an important permissive factor in the process of rhythm generation. In nature, circannual rhythms are usually synchronized by the seasonal changes in photoperiod. However, equatorial birds may use daytime light intensity, which changes with the annual cycle of dry and rainy seasons, as a synchronizing zeitgeber. Photoperiod also modulates the rate of progress of the successive phases of the rhythmicity, such that an optimal adjustment to the annual environmental cycle is guaranteed. Populations of a given species may differ in their responsiveness to photoperiod in a manner that can be described as 'adaptive population-specific reaction norms'. In young migratory songbirds a circannual program determines changes in migratory direction and, at least partly, the time course and distance of migration. This circannual mechanism is replaced or supplemented in older birds by mechanisms formed on the basis of learning and memory. In general, circannual rhythms are intimately involved in the seasonal organization of a bird's behavior, providing the substrate onto which seasonal environmental factors act.  相似文献
