This study evaluated the use of egg ratio (eggs rotifer–1) and swimming speed (mm min–1) as prediction criteria for production and culture quality in mass cultures of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis. Egg ratio was determined to be a suitable predictor of rotifer growth and production in the cultures. Low egg ratios (i.e., 0–0.17 eggs rotifer–1) indicate reduced rotifer population over time (i.e., negative net population growth rates). However, at this time egg ratio dynamics are not suitably understood to predict in advance a sudden population collapse.Swimming speed of reproductive, egg-carrying females in the exponential growth phase was 40–45 mm min–1. During exponential growth swimming speed was independent of the food used. Lower swimming speeds were obtained in late stationary phase (10–25 mm min–1) when yeast was used as a food source. Both environmental factors (e.g., accumulating metabolites) and changes in nutritional state of the rotifers may have affected the swimming speed, but environmental factors appear to be the most important. We believe that swimming speed has the potential of becoming an accurate predictor of culture quality in mass cultures of rotifers.  相似文献

Bacterial density and composition in association of mass cultivated rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis, SINTEF-strain) was investigated, during experimental conditions identical to the procedures used for preparing rotifers as live food for marine cold water fish larvae. These procedures include cultivation, enrichment with squid meal and acclimation to low temperature by storage of the rotifer culture at 6 °C. Large variations were observed in the number of rotifer associated (1.8–7.6 · 103 colony forming units per rotifer–1) and free-living (0.6–25 107 cells·ml–1) bacteria. An increase of 50–150% in the bacterial number was normally observed after feeding the rotifer with squid meal, but after three days of acclimation at 6 °C, the bacterial numbers decreased to the initial level.After enrichment of the cultures with squid meal, the similarity in the composition of the bacterial flora between the rotifers and water was reduced. However, acclimation of the culture at 6 °C resulted in better agreement of the rotifer associated flora and that in water. Enrichment of the cultures induced a shift in the bacterial composition from Cytophaga/Flavobacterium dominance to Pseudomonas/Alcaligenes dominance. The bacterial flora of the rotifer cultures are dominated by presumably opportunistic species after enrichment, which may have detrimental effects when rotifers are fed as live food to marine fish larvae.  相似文献

Diurnal vertical distribution of rotifers was investigated in the Chara bed and the water immediately above it in the shallow region (ca. 1 m depth) of Budzyskie Lake (Wielkopolski National Park, Poland) in early September 1998. Eighty one rotifer species were identified – 71 among Chara and 59 in the open water. Significant differences in rotifer densities were observed in the Chara, with highest numbers during the day (2316 ind. l–1) and lowest numbers early morning (521 ind. l–1) and at dusk (610 ind. l–1). Above the Chara, the numbers of rotifers did not change significantly (615–956 ind. l–1). Littoral- or limnetic-forms differed in their diel vertical distribution between both zones. One group of littoral species was characterized by increased densities in the Chara in the daytime, while a second group increased in density during the night. The densities of limnetic species, which were much higher in open water, decreased in the morning or daytime in this zone. These differences in the diel behaviour of particular groups of rotifers may be dependent on microhabitat and may also be related to different kinds of predation, the exploitative competition for shared food resources between rotifers and crustaceans, as well as typical adaptation to littoral or limnetic life.  相似文献

Three rotifer species, Lecane hamata L. luna, and L. quadridentata, were submitted to acute toxicity tests to compare their susceptibility to 11 toxicants. In acute tests with 48-h exposure of neonates of less than 24 h old, copper was most toxic with LC50 values in the range of 0.06–0.33 mg l–1, while acetone was the least toxic with LC50 values in the range of 5000–7000 mg l–1. Differences in LC50 value of up to 22-fold were found in the susceptibility to lead between the three species. These data indicate large differences in toxicity among members of the same genus, and point out that it is necessary to submit several species to toxicity tests in order to assess the potential effects of toxicants to rotifers. The commonly used Brachionus calyciflorus cannot be considered representative of all freshwater rotifers in this respect.  相似文献

The species composition of rotifers in Lake Awasa was studied and 40 species recorded. Seven species appeared in large numbers in the plankton seasonally. Brachionus and Keratella species made up more than 50% of the rotifer community by numbers during the observation period (1983–1987). The standing stock numbers of rotifer species are low with a maximum of 50 individuals L–1, and some possible reasons for this observation are discussed. Most rotifer species are distributed randomly in the lake and show 3-fold fluctuations between consecutive days.The seasonal dynamics of most rotifer species are correlated with mixing periods in the lake, and the amplitude of seasonal fluctuation may be as high as 50-fold. Clear-cut seasonal succession of rotifer species was observed during the study period, but no consistent seasonal pattern for individual species was obvious. Also, observations indicate that rotifer biomass is partly sustained by availability of carbon through the bacterial pathway and that competitive exclusion for food by nauplii and ciliates probably keeps rotifer abundance low.  相似文献

The effect of different cell densities of marine Chlorella sp. on the growth rate, doubling time and production of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis was investigated. A significant increase in rotifer production was achieved at a density of 50 × 106 Chlorella cells ml–1. Freshwater cladocerans and rotifers were used as prey to study functional response and prey selection by adult females of Chirocephalus diaphanus under laboratory conditions. For functional response studies, we offered three rotifer species (Brachionus calyciflorus, B. patulus and Euchlanis dilatata) and three cladoceran species (Alona rectangula, Ceriodaphnia dubia and Moina macrocopa) at various densities ranging from 0.5 to 16 ind. ml–1. We found increased zooplankton consumption with increasing prey density but beyond 4 ind ml–1 cladocerans and 8 ind. ml–1 rotifers, the number of animals eaten plateaued. In general, C. diaphanus consumed fewer large prey (cladocerans) and many more smaller zooplankton (rotifers). For prey selection experiments, we used B. calyciflrous, B. patulus, C. dubia and M. macrocopa, offered at the ratio of two rotifers: one cladoceran and at three prey densities (total zooplankton numbers: 3, 6 and 12 ind. ml–1). Prey selectivity patterns followed the functional response trends. In general, regardless of prey types, with an increase in the available zooplankton, there was an increase in the number of prey consumed. At any given prey density, C. diaphanus consumed higher numbers of rotifers than cladocerans. Among the prey offered, B. patulus and M. macrocopa were positively selected. Results are discussed in light of possible control of zooplankton by anostracans in temporary ponds.  相似文献

Continuous production of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis rotundiformis (S-type) in an intensive chemostat culture system has been investigated. The production dynamics of rotifers in relation to different flow rates and feed regimes show that the growth rate and production depends on the type of algal feed and flow rate utilized in the culture system. It was possible to achieve a mean production of up to 318.84 × 106 rotifers m–3 d–1 at a flow rate of 6 1 h–1 in 100 1 chemostats and up to 261.21 × 106 rotifers m–3 d–1 at a flow rate of 40 1 h –1 while using 1 m3 capacity rotifer chemostats as production units. The 3 fatty acid composition of rotifers while using Chlorella and Nannochloropsis in the culture system has been described. The results of this investigation show that the rotifer productivity in the continuous culture system is considerably higher than in any of the conventional culture systems described to date for aquacultural purposes.This research was financed by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS), Kuwait, under a contract research project code 86-04-02.  相似文献

The production of planktonic rotifers was studied in eutrophic Lake Ormajärvi. Of the total annual production of rotifers (2.9 g org. C m–2 or 231 mg dry weight m–3) 49% was achieved during one month (July) and 88% during 3 months of summer. The most important producers were Keratella cochlearis (1.2 g C m–2), Asplanchna priodonta (0.8 g C m–2) and Conochilus unicornis (0.6 g C m–2). The P/B ratio for the total rotifer community during the growing season (7 months) was 25.0; monthly P/ B values varied between 0.3 and 5.2. The daily P/ B values were highest among species of Collotheca. The relationships of rotifers to some biotic and abiotic factors (invertebrate predators — Mesocyclops, Cladocera, planktonic Protozoa and temperature) are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Rotifer community structure of the oligotrophic, alpine lake KGnigssee was investigated from October 1982 to October 1983. Twenty different species were found, including several cold-stenothermal and oligotrophic species. Polyarthra vulgaris/dolichoptera, Kellicottia longispina and Keratella cochlearis were the most abundant species throughout the year, comprising 90% of the total rotifer community (2.8 × 106 individuals m–2, maximum). The remainder of the rotifer community was represented by as many as eight species which occured for a short time in summer and autumn. The rotifer community was limited to the upper 50 m (85–100%) in which most (60–80%) of the rotifers preferred the trophogenic layer (0–20 m). Species-specific depth preferences were observed. Rotifer abundance and distribution are discussed in terms of the specific environmental conditions in Königssee. The rotifer community of Konigssee is compared to that of Lake Constance in its former oligotrophic state.  相似文献

Isolated rock pools in the US desert southwest often develop dense populations of a lithophilic species of the rotifer Hexarthra. I hypothesized that rotifers persist in these isolated ponds due to the absence of either competition with or predation by potentially sympatric crustaceans, especially anostracans. I tested the latter idea with laboratory and field experiments, in each case exposing rotifers to adult fairy shrimp (Branchinecta mackini, the dominant anostracan in this region in winter ponds) in 200 ml microcosms. In␣most cases individual female fairy shrimp had distinct negative effects on rotifer suspensions due to direct predatory consumption of the smaller animals. Estimated effective water processing rates ranged from ca. 50 to over 300 ml ind−1 h−1 and rotifer consumption rates by female B. mackini were between 280 and > 600 Hexarthra consumed per individual predator per hour. Male B. mackini never significantly reduced rotifer numbers in either laboratory or field microcosms. The results indicate that, while perhaps not the sole determinant of rotifer distribution in these ephemeral pools, fairy shrimp predation can have a strong negative influence on natural Hexarthra populations.  相似文献

The freshwater rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus is one of the live food organisms used for the mass production of larval fish. In this study possibility of obtaining high density cultures of the freshwater rotifer B. calyciflorus were investigated. The two culture systems used differed in their air and dissolved oxygen supplies using three temperatures in each case: 24, 28 and 32 °C. Rotifers were batch-cultured using 5 l-vessels and fed with the freshwater Chlorella. The growth rate of rotifers significantly increased with an increase in temperature. The maximum density of the rotifers with air-supply at 24 °C, 6500 ind. ml–1, was significantly lower than those cultured at 28 and 32 °C, i.e. 8600 and 8100 ind. ml–1, respectively. Dissolved oxygen levels decreased with time and ranged from 0.8 to 1.4 mg l–1 when the density of freshwater rotifer was the highest at each temperature. The highest density (19200 ind. ml–1) of freshwater rotifer was obtained in cultures with a supply of oxygen at 28 °C. Densities of 13500 and 17200 ind. ml–1 were found at 24 and 32 °C, respectively. Levels of NH3-N increased with time and a dramatic increase of NH3-N was observed at high temperatures. Levels of NH3-N at 24, 28 and 32 °C were 13.2, 18.5 and 24.5 mg l–1, respectively. These levels coincided with the highest rotifer density at each of the three temperatures. When rotifers were cultured with an oxygen-supply and pH was adjusted to 7, the maximum density of rotifer reached 33500 ind. ml–1 at 32 °C . These results suggested that high density culture of freshwater rotifer, B. calyciflorus could be achieved under optimal conditions with DO value of exceeding 5 mg l–1 and NH3-N values of lower than 12.0 mg l–1.  相似文献

The use of the freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus as a test organism for ecotoxicological studies was examined. Changes in the feeding-, swimming behavior- and demographic characteristics of the rotifers exposed to increasing concentrations of copper (Cu) were studied and the relationships between the different test parameters and their ecological relevance evaluated.Relatively simple short-term bioassay methods were developed to measure the swimming activity (2 hours) and the filtration (5 hours) rate. Life-table experiments were performed to asses the long-term effects of Cu on the rotifers. Significant reductions in the filtration rate, the swimming activity and the demographic parameter r were observed at 20, 12 and 5 g 1–1 of Cu, respectively. The implications and the possible ecotoxicological applications of the results are discussed.  相似文献

This work explores the effect of darkness on the swimming behaviour of females of the rotifer Asplanchna brightwelli. Females were filmed in flat dishes alternately in white light (WL, 5000 µW cm–2) and in infra-red light (IR, 155 µW cm–2), each female for a total of eight successive periods of fifteen minutes per period. An automated tracking system was used to describe the swimming path of each female: twenty five x and y coordinates of the center of gravity of the animal per second, in a discrete space of 512 × 512 pixels. Indices characterizing the swimming performances of the females were then calculated: linear speed, angular speed and other angular parameters of the tracks. A Principal Component Analysis of swimming characteristics discriminated between WL tracks and IR tracks. Females swam slower and turned more in darkness than in light. These results show that beside a positive phototactic response, there is a photokinesis which increases the dispersion of animals in the light.  相似文献

Phosphorus (PO4-P) and nitrogen (NH4-N) excretion rates of Euchlanis dilatata lucksiana, a rotifer, isolated from Lake Loosdrecht (The Netherlands) and cultured in the lake water at 18–19 °C, were measured in the laboratory.In a series of experiments, the effects of experiment duration on the P and N excretion rates were examined. The rates measured in the first half-hour were about 2 times higher for P and 2–4 times for N than the rates in the subsequent three successive hours which were quite comparable.Eight experiments were carried out in triplicate, 4 each for P and N excretion measurements, using animals of two size ranges: 60–125 µm and > 125 µm. The specific excretion rates varied from 0.06 to 0.18 µg P.mg–1 DW.h–1 and 0.21 to 0.76 µg N.mg–1 DW.h–1. Generally an inverse relationship was observed between the specific excretion rates and the mean individual weight. The excretion rates of Euchlanis measured by us are lower than those reported for several other rotifer species, most of which are much smaller than Euchlanis.Extrapolating the excretion rates of Euchlanis to the other rotifer species in Lake Loosdrecht, and accounting for their density, size and temperature, rotifer excretion appears to be a significant, potential nutrient (N,P) source for phytoplankton growth in the lake. The excretion rates for the rotifers appear to be about two thirds of the total zooplankton excretion, even though the computed rotifer mean biomass is about one-third of the total zooplankton biomass.  相似文献

Rotifer cultures of Brachionus plicatilis (SINTEF-strain, length 250 m) rich in 3 fatty acids were starved for > 5 days at variable temperature (0–18 °C). The net specific loss rate of rotifer numbers were 0.04 day–1 (range 0–0.08 day–1) at 5–18 °C, but reached values up to 0.25 day–1 at 0–3 °C. The loss rate was independent on culture density (range 40–1000 ind ml–1), but was to some extent dependent on the initial physiological state of the rotifers (i.e., egg ratio).The loss rate of lipids was 0.02–0.05 day–1 below 10 °C, where the potential growth rate of the rotifer is low (0–0.09 day–1). The loss rate of lipids increased rapidly for higher temperatures where the rotifer can maintain positive growth, and reached 0.19 day–1 at 18 °C. The Q10 for the lipid loss rate versus temperature was higher than the Q10 for respiration found in other strains. This may suggest that other processes than respiration were involved in lipid catabolism. The content of 3 fatty acids became reduced somewhat faster than the lipids (i.e. in particular 22:6 3), but the fatty acid per cent distribution remained remarkably unaffected by the temperature during starvation.The results showed that rotifer cultures could be starved for up to 4 days at 5–8 °C without essential quantitative losses of lipids, 3 fatty acids, and rotifers. The rotifers exhausted their endogenous lipids through reproduction (anabolism) and respiration (including enhanced locomotion) at higher temperatures. At lower temperatures, the mortality rate became very high.  相似文献

We measured laboratory clearance rates of 10 rotifer and one unidentified bryozoan species from 3 different lakes using 32P labeled algae (Chlamydomonas) or yeast (Rhodotorula). Clearance rates for all rotifers fed yeast ranged from < 2.0 to > 260 µl · animal–1 · h–1 depending on species. The in vitro clearance rates of two sessile rotifers (Ptygura crystallina and P. pilula) were not significantly different from previously measured in situ rates (Wallace and Starkweather 1983). Clearance rates for 5 rotifers fed algae ranged from < 5.0 to > 90.0 µl · animal–1 · h–1. Ptygura beauchampi, P. crystallina, P. pilula, Floscularia conifera, and F. melicerta ingested both cell types but their clearance rates varied substantially among species and between cell types. There was a substantial time-dependent loss of 32P from formalin-fixed animals (Sinantherina socialis) awaiting processing. This loss stabilized at approximately 20 hours and was estimated to be about 40% of the initial ingested label. Clearance rates for the bryozoan fed yeast or algae were highly variable, ranging from < 1.0 to > 3 000 µl · animal–1 · h–1.  相似文献

Competition among cladocerans and rotifers is of considerable interest not only due to their close similarity in life history strategies, but also due to the considerable overlap they exhibit in their feeding habits. In tropical waterbodies, several genera of cladocerans, including Ceriodaphnia and Moina occur, simultaneously with rotifers. We tested over a period of 3 weeks the combined effects of food (0.5×106 and 1.5×106 cells ml–1 of Chlorella) level and rotifer density on the competition between B. patulus and C. dubia and M. macrocopa using population growth experiments. For each cladoceran species we used 30 test jars of 50 ml capacity. The initial density of cladocerans was 0.2 ind ml–1, while for B. patulus it was either 1 ind ml–1 or 5 ind ml–1. Neither the maximal population density nor the rate of population increase (r) of C. dubia was significantly affected by B. patulus. However, for M. macrocopa, both these variables were negatively affected by the rotifers. The combined effects of low food level and high initial density of B. patulus resulted in a 50% reduction in the peak population density of M. macrocopa. The population growth of B. patulus was negatively influenced by the presence of C. dubia and M. macrocopa. The results of the competition experiments conducted in the present study between cladocerans and rotifers suggest the existence of a more complex and delicate interaction than is generally thought.  相似文献

Long-term (1969–2002) data record of biomass distribution of rotifers in Lake Kinneret is combined with previously published information on their metabolic activity and newly calculated population dynamics parameters to synthesize a model of their seasonal dynamics in Lake Kinneret. Nineteen rotifer species were recorded in routine samples collected in Lake Kinneret (Israel) in 7 offshore (deeper than 5 m), stations, at 12 discrete depths during 1969–2002. Organisms were sorted and counted (including external egg carrying females), biomass was measured and calculated for the entire lake stock (gw.w m−2; mg l−1). Rates of grazing, respiration and production were measured experimentally at three different temperature ranges. Results were extrapolated to the lake community for months with similar temperatures. Rotifera comprised 7% of total zooplankton biomass in Lake Kinneret whilst Cladocera and Copepoda 58 and 35% respectively. Rotifers were found to be more abundant during December–June and decline in summer months. Monthly (1969–2001) means indicated total grazing capacity of rotifers as 11%, respiration as 9% and production as 3.7% of the total zooplankton metabolic activity. Positive relations were indicated between rotifer and small bodied cladoceran numerical concentrations. Population growth models suggest that rotifers are not food limited in Lake Kinneret but that fish predation plays an important role in regulating abundance in spring-summer and fall.  相似文献

Brachionus plicatilis females were maintained for > 24 hours in water where the concentration of oxygen was precisely controlled (spherical flasks with 6 mg l–1 or < 0.5 mg l–1; food = dead Tetraselmis sp.). Each female was randomly taken from one flask and quickly placed in an observation chamber containing the same experimental conditions. The swimming path was videotaped (5 minutes); then the size of the female was measured. The tape was analyzed by automatic tracking (25 x,y coordinates of the center of the animal, in a 512 × 512 pixels space). The swimming path was analyzed for 45 females in both treatments. The speed (mm s–1 body length–1) was calculated for all trajectories, or only for those segments where females swam in a horizontal plane. This relative speed significantly decreased when the concentration of oxygen was very low. There was a negative correlation between the linear speed and the angular speed. The spatial sinuosity (S of Bovet & Benhamou, 1988) was calculated. The trajectories were significantly more sinuous when the concentration of oxygen was very low. These results could explain the accumulation of some rotifers in the oxycline; rotifers may spend more time in very low concentrations of oxygen by slowing and by turning more.  相似文献
