Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. seedlings inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius (Pers.) Coker & Couch and Thelephora terrestris Ehrl. per Fr. were grown in well watered soil (s –0.03 MPa) or subjected to a long-term soil water stress of up to –1.0 MPa over 13-week period in a glasshouse. After 13 weeks, all seedling containers were watered to field capacity and then water was withheld from the E. camaldulensis seedlings to induce a short-term drought. Diurnal measurements of seedling photosynthesis rate (A), leaf stomatal conductance (g) and leaf water potential (p) were completed before, during, and after the short term drought. Although they were growing in an equal soil volume, photosynthesis rate (A), leaf stomatal conductance and leaf water potential (p) of larger seedlings with P. tinctorius ectomycorrhizae were similar to those of smaller seedlings colonized with T. terrestris during the short-term drought period. Seedlings inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius maintained higher photosynthesis rates over the course of the short-term drought. Thus, P. tinctorius ectomycorrhizae appear to be more efficient than those of T. terrestris in assisting seedlings to maintain gas exchange and photosynthesis under limited soil moisture conditions.  相似文献

Conditions of soil drying and plant growth that lead to non-hydraulic inhibition of leaf elongation and stomatal conductance in maize (Zea mays L.) were investigated using plants grown with their root systems divided between two containers. The soil in one container was allowed to dry while the other container was kept well-watered. Soil drying resulted in a maximum 35% inhibition of leaf elongation rate which occurred during the light hours, with no measurable decline in leaf water potential (w). Leaf area was 15% less than in control plants after 18 d of soil drying. The inhibition of elongation was observed only when the soil w declined to below that of the leaves and, thus, the drying soil no longer contributed to transpiration. However, midday root w in the dry container (-0.29 MPa) remained much higher than that of the surrounding soil (-1.0 MPa) after 15 d of drying, indicating that the roots in drying soil were rehydrated in the dark.To prove that the inhibition of leaf elongation was not caused by undetectable changes in leaf water status as a result of loss of half the watergathering capacity, one-half of the root system of control plants was excised. This treatment had no effect on leaf elongation or stomatal conductance. The inhibition of leaf elongation was also not explained by reductions in nutrient supply.Soil drying had no effect on stomatal conductance despite variations in the rate or extent of soild drying, light, humidity or nutrition. The results indicate that non-hydraulic inhibition of leaf elongation may act to conserve water as the soil dries before the occurrence of shoot water deficits.Symbol w water potential Contribution from the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station, Journal Series No. 10881  相似文献

We compared responses of maize, tomato, and bean plants to water stress. Maize reached a severe water deficit (leaf water potential –1.90 MPa) in a longer period of time as compared with tomato and bean plants. Maize stomatal conductance (g s) decreased at mild water deficit. g s of tomato and bean decreased gradually and did not reach values as low as in maize. The protein content was maintained in maize and decreased at low water potential (w); in tomato it fluctuated and also decreased at low w; in bean it gradually decreased. Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activity remained high at mild and moderate stress in maize and tomato plants; in bean it remained high only at mild stress.  相似文献

The effect of water deficit on nodulation, N2 fixation, photosynthesis, and total soluble sugars and leghemoglobin in nodules was investigated in cowpea and groundnut. Nitrogenase activity completely ceased in cowpea with a decrease in leaf water potential ( leaf) from –0.4 MPa to –0.9 MPa, while in groundnut it continued down to –1.7 MPa. With increasing water stress, the acetylene reduction activity (ARA) declined very sharply in cowpea, but ARA gradually decreased in groundnut. Even with mild water stress ( leaf of 0.2 MPa), nodule fresh weight declined 50% in cowpea partly due to a severe nodule shedding whereas nodule fresh weight declined in groundnut only when leaf decreased by 1.0 MPa. No nodule shedding was noticed even at a higher stress level in groundnut. Photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were also more stable in groundnut than in cowpea under water stress. There was a sharp increase in total soluble sugars and leghemoglobin in the nodules of groundut with water stress, but no definite trend could be found in cowpea.  相似文献

A boundary line analysis of the scatterplot relating pre-dawn leaf water potential to pre-dawn minus minimum leaf water potential was applied to study the efficiency of the Mediterranean evergreen oak species to buffer the effects of variability in water resources. The results are discussed in term of stomatal regulation and changes in soil-to-leaf hydraulic conductance of water flow, both induced by changes in leaf water potential. For this purpose, we used data for leaf water potential measured in three stands of Quercus ilex across a soil water availability gradient in Southern France, and two others obtained in California and Arizona for Quercus turbinella and Portugal for Quercus coccifera. A classification of plant responses from mesic to xeric sites is proposed.  相似文献

This study employed an intensive sampling regime in which leaf gas exchange and tissue-water relations were measured simultaneously on the same leaf at midday on 19 tree species from three distinct forest communities during wet (1990) and dry (1991) growing seasons. The study sites were located on a xeric barrens, a misic valley floor, and a wet-mesic floodplain in central Pennsylvania, United States. The xeric, mesic, and wetmesic sties had drought-related decreases in gravimetric soil moisture of 53, 34 and 27%, respectively. During the wet year, xeric and mesic communities had high seasonal mean photosynthetic rates (A) and stomatal conductance of water vapor (g wv) and low midday leaf water potential (), whereas the wet-mesic community had low A and g wv and high midday . The mesic and wet-mesic communities had dry year decreases in predawn , g wv and A with the greatest drought effect occurring in the mesic community. Regression analysis indicated that species from each site that exhibited high wet-year A and g wv tended to have low midday . This trend was reversed only in the mesic community in the drought year. Despite differences in midday , all three communities had similar midday leaf turgor pressure (p) in the wet year attributable to lower osmotic potential at zero turgor ( 0 ) with increasing site droughtiness. Lower wet year 0 in the xeric community was due to low symplast volume rather than high solute content. Species with the lowest 0 in the wet year often did not have the lowest 100 possibly related to differences in tissue elasticity. Moreover, increased elasticity during drought may have masked osmotic adjustment in 100 but not in 0 , via dilution of solutes at full hydration in some species. Despite the sampling regime used, there were no relationships between gas exchange and osmotic and elastic parameters that were consistently significant among communities or years. This result questions the universal, direct effect of osmotic and elastic adjustments in the maintenance of photosynthesis during drought. By including a large number of species, this study provided new insight to the ecophysiology of contrasting forest communities, and the community-wide impact of drought on contrasting sites.  相似文献

Gas exchange in Gossypium hirsutum L. cv. H-777 as affected by water deficit and growth regulators (IAA, GA3, BAP, ABA, ethrel) was examined. Sixty days after sowing, growth regulators in concentration 50 µM were applied as foliar spray and irrigation was withheld to get desired (moderate and severe) water deficit. All the parameters were measured on the third leaf from the top between 10:00 and 11:00. Net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (gs), carboxylation efficiency (CE), and water potential (w) decreased significantly with the increasing water stress, however, water use efficiency (WUE) was unaffected. Foliar spray with IAA, GA3 and BAP partially counteracted the effect of water deficit on the above parameters except w, which became more negative. ABA and up to some extent ethrel increased WUE and maintained higher w, however, caused further decrease in PN, E, and gs.  相似文献

Water relations of stem succulent trees in north-central Baja California   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Summary Water relations of several stem succulent trees were measured in north-central Baja California in comparisons to other growth forms in the same habitat. Our research concentrated on three stem succulent species (Idria collumnaris, Pachycormus discolor and Bursera microphylla) each with a different succulent stem morphology. The stem succulent trees had 1 to 4 kg H2O/m3 of trunk while the other trees and shrubs in the same habitat had 0.6 to 0.8 kg H2O/m3. The diurnal and seasonal variation in leaf water potential was small for the stem succulent species in comparison to deciduous and evergreen species as a consequence of the stem-water, buffering capacity. In addition, the leaf conductance of the stem succulent species was low (60 mmol m–2 s–1) and yet, the leaf conductance decreased through the day similar to adjacent evergreen and deciduous species. The leaves of the stem succulent trees lost turgor at low saturated water deficits (0.06 to 0.14), had comparatively high osmotic potentials, and high values of elastic modulus in comparison to adjacent evergreen and deciduous species. The stem acts as an important buffering mechanism allowing for the maintenance of leaf turgor in these stem succulent trees. The low transpiration rates of the stem succulent trees may be a mechanism to minimize leaf saturated water deficit and extend leaf longevity.  相似文献

Summary Midday closure of stomata of well-watered ( between-10 and-25 bar) or moderately stressed ( between-25 and-35 bar) Arbutus unedo plants occurs when midday leaf temperatures increase above 30°C and vapor pressure difference between leaf air spaces and the external air increases above approximately 30 mbar/bar. Moderate water stress decreases maximum conductance and may result in greater sensitivity to high leaf temperature and vapor pressure dificit, which results in earlier closure and later reopening of stomata. Severe water stress ( of-50 bar) changes the form of the daily pattern observed for leaf conductance. A single morning peak in conductance occurs followed by decrease in conductance over the remainder of the day. Morning fog in Portugal during the dry season may facilitate stomatal opening and may allow improvement of carbon balances of the leaves for short periods, but contributes little to improvement of plant water balances over the longer term.  相似文献

Daily and annual courses of leaf transpiration, stomatal conductance and shoot water potential of four Quercus suber individuals were compared in a semi-natural stand in southwest Portugal, from spring 1989 to early summer 1990.The trees investigated showed annual patterns typical of evergreen sclerophyllous species but varied in their range of stomatal operation. This appeared to be related to differences in hydraulic conductivity in the root-to-leaf pathway.Maximum stomatal conductance and transpiration rates occurred from March to June.Water stress was found to be moderate and winter cold stress due to low air and soil temperatures appeared to have an influence on plant water balance through their effects on flow resistances.Abbreviations gsw stomatal conductance - gmax maximum stomatal conductance - PAR photosynthetically active radiation - RH relative humidity of the air - T leaf transpiration - Ta air temperature - TL leaf temperature - Tmax maximum leaf transpiration - W air-to-leaf vapor pressure difference - shoot water potential - PD predawn shoot water potential - MIN minimum shoot water potential  相似文献

Larrea tridentata is a xerophytic evergreen shrub, dominant in the arid regions of the southwestern United States. We examined relationships between gasexchange characteristics, plant and soil water relations, and growth responses of large versus small shrubs of L. tridentata over the course of a summer growing season in the Chihuahuan Desert of southern New Mexico, USA. The soil wetting front did not reach 0.6 m, and soils at depths of 0.6 and 0.9 m remained dry throughout the summer, suggesting that L. tridentata extracts water largely from soil near the surface. Surface soil layers (<0.3 m) were drier under large plants, but predawn xylem water potentials were similar for both plant sizes suggesting some access to deeper soil moisture reserves by large plants. Stem elongation rates were about 40% less in large, reproductively active shrubs than in small, reproductively inactive shrubs. Maximal net photosynthetic rates (Pmax) occurred in early summer (21.3 mol m-2 s-1), when pre-dawn xylem water potential (XWP) reached ca. -1 MPa. Although both shrub sizes exhibited similar responses to environmental factors, small shrubs recovered faster from short-term drought, when pre-dawn XWP reached about -4.5 MPa and Pmax decreased to only ca. 20% of unstressed levels. Gas exchange measurements yielded a strong relationship between stomatal conductance and photosynthesis, and the relationship between leaf-to-air vapor pressure deficit and stomatal conductance was found to be influenced by pre-dawn XWP. Our results indicate that stomatal responses to water stress and vapor pressure deficit are important in determining rates of carbon gain and water loss in L. tridentata.  相似文献

Summary Plant water relations and shoot growth rate of shrubs resprouting after fire or unburnt were measured in a semi-arid poplar box (Eucalyptus populnea) shrub woodland of eastern Australia. In vegetation unburnt for about 60 years, the dawn xylem water potential (x) of the dominant shrub species was about-1.0 MPa when the soil was wet and-8.0 MPa when the soil was very dry. At any one time, the dominant shrub species,Eremophila mitchellii, E. sturtii, Geijera parviflora andCassia nemophila, were similar in x butAcacia aneura andDodonaea viscosa were consistently higher in x than this group when the soil was moist and lower when the soil was dry. The dominant tree species,Eucalyptus populnea andE. intertexta, appeared to have access to additional water beneath the hardpan which is located 60–80 cm below the surface. When shrubs were under extreme water stress (x of-8 MPa), the trees had a x of-3 to-3.6 MPa. Following a fire, both x and leaf stomatal conductance (g s) of resprouting shrubs were higher for about 5 years than comparable-aged unburnt vegetation, with relative differences in x increasing with drought stress. Elongation rate of resprouts was positively linked to prefire shrub height in 3 of 4 species. However, shrubs resprouting after high intensity fires had substantially higher rates of shoot elongation than after low intensity fires which were in turn higher than for foliar expansion of unburnt shrubs. It is concluded that the growth rate of resprouting shrubs is primarily determined by physiological/ morphological factors associated with plant size but is also assisted by greater availability of water and possibly nutrients for a period after fire.  相似文献

Summary This study compared the tissue water relations and seasonal changes in leaf water potential components of an evergreen tree,Morisonia americana, and two evergreen shrubs,Capparis verrucosa andC. aristiquetae, with two deciduous trees,Humboltiella arborea andLonchocarpus dipteroneurus, and the deciduous vineMansoa verrucifera. All these species coexist in a tropical dry forest in Venezuela. Leaves of the evergreen species are sclerophyllous, while those of the deciduous species are mesophytic. Leaf area to leaf weight ratios of fully mature leaves were about 75 and 170 cm2 g–1 in evergreen and deciduous species, respectively. Seasonal fluctuations of leaf water content per unit of dry weight, water potential, and turgor pressure were smaller in evergreen than in deciduous species. The analysis of tissue water relations using pressurevolume curves showed that evergreen species could develop a higher leaf turgor and lose turgor at lower leaf water potentials than deciduous species. This was related to a lower osmotic potential at full turgor in evergreen (-3.0 MPa)_than in deciduous (-2.0 MPa) species, rather than to the elastic properties of leaf tissue. The volumetric modulus of elasticity was 14 MPa in evergreen compared with 7–10 MPa in deciduous species. Thus, leaf characteristics are important in determining the drought resistance of evergreen species of this tropical dry forest.  相似文献

We investigated net photosynthetic rate (PN) of ear and two uppermost (flag and penultimate) leaves of wheat cultivars Hongmangmai (drought resistant) and Haruhikari (drought sensitive) during post-anthesis under irrigated and non-irrigated field conditions. The PNof ear and flag leaf were significantly higher and less affected by drought in Hongmangmai than in Haruhikari. The rate of reduction in stomatal conductance (gs) was similar for the two cultivars, but intercellular CO2concentration (Ci) in the flag leaf of Hongmangmai was lower than that of Haruhikari in non-irrigated treatment. No differences were observed in leaf water potential (1) and osmotic adjustment of the flag leaf of the cultivars. These results imply that differences in photosynthetic inhibition on the flag leaf at low leaf 1between the cultivars were primarily due to non-stomatal effects. Hence the main physiological factor associated with yield stability of Hongmangmai under drought stress may be attributed to the capacity for chloroplast activity in the flag leaf, which apparently allows sustained PNof flag leaf during grain filling under drought stress. The higher PNof ear in Hongmangmai under drought could also be related to its drought resistance. This revised version was published online in March 2005 with corrections to the page numbers.  相似文献

Summary Environmental and water relations parameters during fall were monitored for six conifer tree species common to the central Rocky Mountains growing naturally at the same location (Pinus contorta, Pinus ponderosa, Pinus flexilus, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Abies lasiocarpa, Picea engelmannii). Subsequent to what appeared to be the beginning of seasonal stomatal closure, leaf conductance to water vapor declined sharply following the onset of freezing air temperatures at night. A coincident rapid decline in morning xylem pressure potentials (p) also occurred which resulted in values that were considerably below afternoon p. Continuing decreases in maximum leaf conductance during the day were highly correlated with corresponding decreases in minimum nocturnal air temperatures of the preceding night. By mid-December, morning p returned to values very near afternoon p and were only slightly lower than before the onset of subfreezing nights. A preliminary model is proposed which interprets the qualitative interaction between air and soil temperatures, soil and plant water potentials, and leaf conductance during seasonal stomatal closure in fall.  相似文献

Summary Leaf diffusion resistance (r 1) of the upper and lower leaf surfaces of several Populus clones was related to leaf water potential (1), light intensity, vapor pressure deficit (VPD), and temperature by intrinsicallylinear, logarithmic multiple regression analyses. Regression equations accounted for up to 80% of variation in r 1 data. Light intensity and VPD varied among clones in importance in influencing r 1. Pronounced sensitivity of r 1 of certain clones to VPD was related to drought resistance in their parentage. Increasing r 1 was significantly positively correlated with 1, in apparent contradiction to prevailing concepts of stomatal response to water status, and this relationship was probably attributable to effects of other environmental variables on 1 and r 1. Leaf resistance decreased after a storm characterized by winds in excess of 160 km·h-1. Cuticular disruption and altered stomatal response may have been responsible for the storminduced r 1 decrease.  相似文献

We investigated the relationships between foliar stable carbon isotope discrimination (), % foliar N, and predawn water potentials (pd) and midday stomatal conductance (g s) of Larrea tridentata across five Mojave Desert soils with different age-specific surface and sub-surface horizon development and soil hydrologies. We wished to elucidate how this long-lived evergreen shrub optimizes leaf-level physiological performance across soils with physicochemical characteristics that affect the distribution of limiting water and nitrogen resources. We found that in young, coarse alluvial soils that permit water infiltration to deeper soil horizons, % foliar N was highest and , g s and pd were lowest, while %N was lowest and , g s and pd were highest in fine sandy soils; Larrea growing in older soils with well-developed surface and sub-surface horizons exhibited intermediate values for these parameters. showed negative linear relationships with % N (R 2=0.54) and a positive relationship with pd (R 2=0.14). Multiple regression analyses showed a strong degree of multicolinearity of g s and with pd and N, suggesting that soil-mediated distribution of co-limiting water and nitrogen resources was the primary determinant of stomatal behavior, which is the primary limitation to productivity in this shrub. These findings show that subtle changes in the soil medium plays a strong role in the spatial and temporal distribution and utilization of limiting water and nitrogen resources by this long-lived desert evergreen, and that this role can be detected through carbon isotope ratios.  相似文献

Photosynthetic induction times and photoinhibition in relation to simulated sunflecks (sudden increase of irradiance from 20 to 1,500 μmol m−2 s−1) were examined in leaves of co-occurring Fagus lucida (a deciduous tree) and Castanopsis lamontii (an evergreen tree) saplings grown either in a beech forest understory or in an adjacent open site during a late rainy season. Two hypotheses were tested: (1) understory leaves would display faster photosynthetic induction times and greater photoinhibition than open-grown leaves; and (2) evergreen species would have slower photosynthetic induction times and lighter photoinhibition than deciduous species. Times to reach 90% of maximal CO2 assimilation rate (t 90%A ) and stomatal conductance did not differ between species, but showed faster by 3–5 min in open-grown leaves than understory leaves due to higher initial stomatal conductance (g s initial) and induction state 1 min into simulated sunflecks (IS1min) in the former. Our analysis across the published data on photosynthetic induction of 48 broad-leaved woody species again revealed the negative correlations between t 90%A and either g s initial or IS1min, and the similarity of t 90%A and between evergreen and deciduous species. Measurements of maximum PSII photochemical efficiency (F v/F m) indicated that photoinhibition occurred in saplings in any of the growth habitats during sunfleck-induced photosynthetic induction. Despite no interspecific differences in the degree of photoinhibition, understory leaves of both species suffered heavier photoinhibition than open-grown leaves, as indicated by a stronger decrease of F v/F m in the former. Dynamic changes in the quantum yields of PSII photochemistry and ΔpH- and xanthophyll-regulated thermal dissipation and adjustments in the partitioning of electron flow between assimilative and non-assimilative processes were functional to resist photoinhibition. However, such photoinhibition, together with stomatal and biochemical limitations, would decrease carbon gain during simulated sunflecks, particularly in understory leaves.  相似文献

Two maize lines differing in drought resistance were grown at different drought stress induced by polyethylene glycol (PEG 10 000) solutions with osmotic potentials of –0.20, –0.40 and –0.80 MPa in the semipermeable membrane system. During the five days soil water content decreased (from 0.43 to 0.29, 0.25 and 0.23 g cm–3 for three PEG solutions, respectively) as well as leaf water potentials (w; from – 0.54 to –0.76, –1.06 and –1.46 MPa). These values were not significantly different between the investigated lines, indicating that a controlled and consistent soil moisture stress was achieved. Soil drying induced an increase in the ABA content of leaves and xylem of both lines and the effects on stomatal conductance were greater in drought susceptible line (B-432) compared to drought resistant line (ZPBL-1304). To test possible difference in stomatal sensitivity to xylem ABA between lines and to assess any ABA vs. w interaction, roots were fed with 10, 50 and 100 mmol m–3 ABA solutions in another set of experiments. These results showed that manipulation of xylem ABA affected stomata of both lines similarly. Comparison of stomatal sensitivity to drought-induced and applied ABA demonstrated that drought treatment affected stomata of investigated lines by differentially increasing their sensitivity to xylem ABA, thus confirming an interaction between chemical signalling and hydraulic signalling.  相似文献

The effect of phlorizin has been tested on hexose transport and hexose-induced changes of electrical potential (m) and conductance (g m) across the plasmalemma of rhizoid and thallus cells of the aquatic liverwort Riccia fluitans. The decrease of m (depolarization) and g m induced by 1 mM 3-oxymethyl-D-glucose (3-OMG) is substantially inhibited by simultaneous addition of 2 mM phlorizin, whereas no significant response was observed when phlorizin was added alone or several minutes after the sugar. Current-voltage data show that the 3-OMG-generated electrical inward current of 0.016 A m-2 drops to 0.010 A m-2 when phlorizin is present. Uptake as well as efflux of [14C]-3-OMG is strongly and reversibly inhibited by phlorizin between 0.2 and 5 mM. The results are consistent with our hypothesis that the hexose carrier has one binding site with competitive inhibition of glucose uptake by phlorizin (k i=0.08 mM). The electrical data indicate that phlorizin affects an m step of the carrier transport cycle.Abbreviation 3-OMG 3-oxymethyl-D-glucose  相似文献
