This study provided new knowledge on reproductive traits of the unique mudskipper Periophthalmodon septemradiatus that is also a potential aquarium pet. Fish specimens were obtained by using fishing rods at the muddy flat in tributaries of the Hau River from August 2017 to July 2018. Data analysis of a collection of 1,504 individuals (930 males and 674 females) showed that the sex ratio of this species was significantly different from the ratio 1:1. As mature gonads were found monthly during the study period, it is suggested that P. septemradiatus is an iteroparous species releasing eggs for a year-round cycle. The fish length at first mature (Lm) showed an increase from estuary to upstream areas. Male P. septemradiatus had higher Lm values than that of females. Likely, the batch fecundity increased from estuary region (5,916 ± 312 SEM eggs) towards upstream area (11,451 ± 953 SEM eggs). The fish total length and weight values had strong positive relationships with batch fecundity, as shown by high determination values (r2), suggesting that batch fecundity increased with fish size. This study provided more information on reproductive biology of P. septemradiatus, which can be utilized for fish population conservation and artificial reproductive study.  相似文献

This study investigates the ovarian development, spawning patterns, maturity size and fecundity of the goby Glossogobius giuris–a commercial fish in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta–based on the data analysis of 659 individuals. Specimens were caught using trawl nets from four sites representing freshwater (Cai Rang, Can Tho) to salinized regions in the dry season (Long Phu, Soc Trang), and brackish water regions (Hoa Binh, Bac Lieu and Dam Doi, Ca Mau) over the 12 months of 2020. Histological analysis showed that it was a multi-spawner as different stages of oocytes appeared in mature ovaries. The fish could spawn throughout the year, with a peak in April at the freshwater region and in September at salinized and brackish areas as mature ovaries appeared monthly during the studied period and gonadosomatic index displayed the highest value in April and in September, respectively. This goby’s primary egg releasing time tended to be regulated by salinity changes over the four sampling sites. Likewise, size at first maturity of this species could be related to the salinity variation as this value was the longest in freshwater (6.14 ± 0.17) and the shortest in the salinization region (4.82 ± 0.66). Batch fecundity is measured at 5,118–100,003 eggs/female and related to fish length and weight (r2 > 0.76). Findings can be useful for the development of fish conservation strategies and artificial reproducing studies.  相似文献

The study provides new information on the reproductive biology of Hypselobarbus thomassi (Day, 1874) an endemic cyprinid fish in the Western Ghats–a biodiversity hotspot of India. A total of 384 specimens (males = 244 and females = 140) were collected monthly from April 2009 to March 2011 from Kallada River of Southern part of Western Ghats, India. Monthly sex ratio indicated that males predominated in the fishery, and an overall sex ratio was significantly different from the expected value of 1:1 (male:female = 1:0.57, x2 = 28.17, p < .01). Based on the monthly analysis of gonadosomatic index (GSI) and the proportion of mature individuals, the spawning season of H. thomassi occurred between May to October with a peak in June to August. The length at first maturity (L50) recorded was 290 mm TL in males and 330 mm TL in females. The absolute fecundity ranged between 305 (234 mm TL) to 1,089 (414 mm TL) and relative fecundity oscillated between 77.3–220.69 oocytes/g of fish. The fecundity established a linear relationship with total length, body weight and ovary weight. The findings of this study would be very effective to impose sustainable conservation plan for this threatened species in Kallada River and other Western Ghats river systems.  相似文献

Macrobrachium lamarrei (H. Milne-Edwards, 1837) is a well-known freshwater prawn species of Bangladesh. The aim of the research is to explore various reproductive aspects (size at sexual maturity, reproductive period and fecundity) of M. lamarrei in the Ganges River, Bangladesh through October 2012 to September 2013. We also study the environmental parameters and their impact on reproduction of M. lamarrei. A total 391 (ovigerous = 141, non-ovigerous = 250) female specimens were collected using Drag net. The TL50 (the TL at which 50% of individuals become mature) was calculated by a logistic equation as 5.20 cm. Based on the availability of ovigerous females the spawning season was February-November with the peak June-July. Further, 50% and 90% ovigerous females were observed when Fulton’s condition factor (KF) was 0.85 and 1.03, respectively. The total fecundity (FT) was ranged from 65 to 370 where TL was 4.20–6.40 cm and BW was 0.84–2.50 g. Fecundity was found to be highly correlated with TL (r2 ≥ 0.96, rs = 0.96, p < 0.0001) and BW (r2 ≥ 0.88, rs = 0.93, p < 0.0001). Temperature (rp = 0.82, p = 0.009), dissolved oxygen (DO) (rp = −0.83, p = 0.0007), pH (rp = 0.80, p = 0.0014) and total alkalinity (rp = −0.87, p = 0.0002), were highly correlated with ovigerous females. The average temperature on peak spawning season was 32 °C. Also, the spawning period connected with the peak rainfall and showed a notable relation between rainfall and ovigerous females. In addition, exploration of long data series pointed that yearly average air temperature is rising by 0.029 °C yr−1, whereas yearly average rainfall is falling by 2.96 mm yr−1. Therefore, the result will be helpful for the sustainable management and conservation of M. lamarrei through fixed permissible mesh size and establishment of a ban period in the Ganges River, Bangladesh and adjoining ecosystems.  相似文献

Maturation, minimum length at first maturity, spawning season, spawning periodicity, sex-ratio and absolute fecundity of Mystus vittatus, a common bagrid catfish, have been investigated. The observations show that spawning takes place during September and October. Each individual spawns only once in the season as evidenced by the study of the intraovarian ova. The reproduction of the smooth-head catfish (Clarias liocephalus), a heavily exploited wetland fish in Uganda, in a data-deficient fishery, was studied from January to December 2011. Analyses were based on a sample of 854 fish specimens obtained from a chain of wetlands that fringe the Rwizi River, a tributary of the Nile River. Samples were collected monthly from four sites. Fecundity, gonadosomatic index, size at sexual maturity, condition factor and growth patterns were used to describe the reproduction of the species. Mean female fecundity was 2 484.03 ± 1 289.90 (range 266–3 474). Females attained sexual maturity at a smaller size (12.0 cm TL) than males (13.79 cm TL), but were in better condition than males. Gonadosomatic index peaked in the wettest months of the study period, with highest proportion of mature ova occurring during July to November. Although C. liocephalus seems less fecund than other known clariids and is therefore prone to adverse effects from overexploitation, knowledge of its spawning periodicity and its size at sexual maturity could be useful in the management of the fishery in wetlands where it is still abundant.  相似文献

Synopsis Croilia mossambica, a burrowing goby endemic to the coastal lakes of south east Africa occurs from L. Poelela (salinity 8%.) to L. Sibaya (freshwater). Since these lakes are isolated from one another its distribution is discontinuous. It is not found in estuaries or the sea. In L. Sibaya C. mossambica is present on sheltered sides from a depth of 1 m to about 16 m. On exposed shores it is not found at less than 3.5 m depth. It is restricted to sandy, quiet water areas and is unable to form burrows where the substrate is disturbed by water movement, is muddy or consists of sand with a particle diameter greater than 0.5 mm. The maximum depth at which it lives is probably determined by light penetration since it is dependent on sight for prey capture. The food consists of slow moving benthic invertebrates such as chironomid larvae, gastropods, bivalves and amphipods. The relative importance of each depends upon its abundance. C. mossambica is a summer breeder with a protracted spawning season. The sticky eggs measure 0.7–0.8 mm when laid. Tolerance experiments show that it is euryhaline and can survive in seawater of 35%. and that its upper temperature limit is between 32 and 35°C. Temperatures in shallow waters of lakes and estuaries of the region frequently exceed 35°C. Thus its local distribution may be limited by temperature. Its lack of tolerance to high temperatures, to marked water movements and its ability to live in seawater indicates that C. mossambica is suited to life in the sea rather than in estuaries. It is suggested that it was present in quiet areas of the sea, such as lagoons, and that it invaded the coastal lakes which were formed as the estuaries and river valleys were inundated during the Pleistocene marine transgression. C. mossambica cannot tolerate estuarine conditions and with the present absence of quiet water in the sea off the south east African coast the species is now confined to deep coastal lakes.Note  相似文献

The reproductive biology of Metapenaeus dobsoni, the most abundant species caught in coastal trawls off Sri Lanka, was studied from samples collected from two main fishing grounds during January 2009 to April 2010. This information is important for developing scientifically sound management measures, as current management is based only on artisanal knowledge. Data obtained included sex ratios, fecundity, gonadosomatic index (%GSI), and morphometric characters with respect to maturity. Size at 50% sexual maturity (L 50m) and size at 50% insemination (L 50in) were estimated for females. In males, L 50m was determined based on the presence of spermatophores in the terminal ampoule. Synchronous seasonal gametogenesis with some asynchrony among individuals was found. Impregnated females were found throughout the year. The GSI and histological examination suggested a prolonged spawning season in M. dobsoni, reaching peaks in August–January and March. Sex ratio, defined as the proportion of females to the total, increased steadily in size beyond 2.35?cm carapace length (CL) and reached 100% at sizes >3.8?cm CL. Estimated population parameters of the species will be important for the sustainable management of this resource.  相似文献

Harvested populations of the sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus) from the northwestern (Carreço) and southwestern (Aljezur) coasts of Portugal were surveyed to describe the species reproductive cycle and assess possible relationships with geographical location and seawater temperature. Individuals were sampled monthly to analyze gonad histology, mean gonadal index (GI), and gonadosomatic index (GSI) during 2 consecutive years (November 2010–November 2012). Both populations presented an annual reproductive cycle, with synchronous gonad maturation and gamete release between sexes. Gonad maturation occurred throughout autumn–winter, followed by a single but prolonged spawning season during spring–summer. The duration of the spawning season displayed a latitudinal gradient likely related to the north–south increasing trend in seawater temperature, with the northwestern population (Carreço) exhibiting a shorter spawning period compared to the southwestern population (Aljezur). The timing and duration of the spawning season was compared with several populations throughout the distributional range of P. lividus in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. In the population from Carreço, the size at first sexual maturity (test diameter = 35.9 mm) was considerably smaller than the minimum conservation reference size (MCRS) of 50 mm test diameter legally established for P. lividus. This study confirms that sustainable exploitation depends on harvesters’ awareness of and compliance with the MCRS and provides useful information for the eventual establishment of a closed season in the harvesting of P. lividus.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of female bigeye tuna Thunnus obesus was assessed by examining 888 fish (ranging from 84·9 to 174·4 cm fork length, LF) caught by Taiwanese offshore longliners in the western Pacific Ocean from November 1997 to November 1998 and November to December 1999 and 258 gonad samples from these fish. The overall sex ratio of the catch during the sampling differed significantly from 0·5, but males were predominant in sizes >140 cm LF. Reproductive activity (assessed by histology), a gonado‐somatic index, and the size‐frequency distributions of whole oocytes indicated that spawning occurred throughout the year and the major spawning season appeared to be from February to September. The estimated sizes at 50% maturity (LF50) of females was 102·85 cm (95% c.i .: 90·79–110·21 cm) and the smallest mature female was 99·7 cm LF. They are multiple spawners and oocytes develop asynchronously. The proportion of mature (0·63) and reproductively active (0·70) females with ovaries containing postovulatory follicles indicated that they spawn almost daily. Batch fecundity for 15 females with the most advanced oocytes (>730 µm) ranged from 0·84 to 8·56 million eggs (mean ± s.d . = 3·06 ± 2·09). The relationships between batch fecundity (FB, in millions of eggs) and LF (cm) and round mass (MR, kg) were (r2 = 0·84) and (r2 = 0·80), respectively. The parameters estimated in this study are key information for stock assessments of T. obesus in the western Pacific Ocean and will contribute to the conservation and sustainable yield of this species.  相似文献

The stinging catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch, 1974) is a commercially important fish species in Asia. This is an important food fish as is enriched with high amounts of protein, iron and calcium. The current research demonstrates the population structure, size at sexual maturity, spawning- and peak-spawning season and fecundity of H. fossilis in an important wetland ecosystem - Gajner Beel in northwestern Bangladesh with an aim of its sustainable conservation through induced breeding and aquaculture practices. A total of 426 stinging catfish captured from the Gajner Beel through monthly sampling from January to December 2019 used in the study. Total length (TL), standard length (SL) and body weight (BW) of individual fishes were measured. The size ranges were with 6.70–24.10 cm TL, 1.37–83.94 g BW. Gonads were removed carefully through ventral dissection and weighted. Lm was 14.02, 13.5, 13.0 and 15.0 cm based on maximum length (Lmax), TL vs. GSI (%), TL vs. SL and logistic model, respectively. Monthly variations of GSI and maturation stages were confirmed in April to August as spawning season and June as peak spawning month. Fulton’s condition factor (KF) was found to be with significant relations with GSI values. Fecundity was 1,730 to 23,870 and significantly correlated with both TL and BW. Temperature has been increasing 0.029 °C/year with the falling of rainfall at 2.96 mm/year in the study area. Environmental factors -Temperature, rainfall, dissolved oxygen and pH were found to be significantly correlated with GSI. We found the optimal range of temperature (29–31 °C), rainfall (350–380 mm), dissolved oxygen (5.0–6.0 mg/l) and pH (7.1–7.5) for spawning of H. fossilis. The paper recommended the policy guidelines to pave the ways of the aquaculture, conservation and management of H. fossilis in the changing eco-climatic events through specific management measures.  相似文献

The Rhinogobius species complex (Pisces: Gobiidae) includes great variation in colour, morphology and ecological form. In particular, R. sp. OR (Orange type) exhibits some of the greatest colour variation among the species complex, although the genetic relationships among the variations in this fish remain unclear. Thirteen microsatellite loci were identified from R. sp. OR, and all loci were polymorphic with two to 17 alleles per locus. Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.1 to 0.9, while the expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.19 to 0.96. Multiplex polymerase chain reaction reaction (PCR) were optimized. In this study, sex ratio, spawning season, fork length (L(F)) at maturity (L(F50)), batch fecundity and spawning frequency were characterized for the continental population of Ocyurus chrysurus from the Campeche Bank, in the southern Gulf of Mexico. A total of 1657 specimens were collected from February 2008 to January 2009. The overall sex ratio (male:female) and sex ratios by size-class showed no significant differences from an expected 1:1 ratio. The Campeche Bank population did not conform to the reproductive seasonality pattern characteristic of a continental population. A protracted spawning season that extended from January to September with peaks occurring mainly between April and May and additionally in September was observed. The population conformed, however, to the sexual maturity pattern observed for populations and species associated with a continental margin. Fish of both sexes reached the onset of sexual maturity at a similar and small L(F) of c. 14 cm, and L(F50) (L(F) at which 50% of females and males become mature) was 21·3 and 19·4 cm. Asynchronous-type ovarian development was observed for this species and batch fecundity estimates ranged from 14,102 to 164,756 oocytes (mean ±S.D. = 43,852 ± 32,684 oocytes). The overall spawning frequency estimate was once every 8·3 days or 26 times during the 9 month spawning season.  相似文献

Reproductive biology and morphology of eggs and early larvae of the sicydiine goby Stiphodon percnopterygionus were investigated on Okinawa Island, southern Japan. Spawning season was estimated as being from May to December. Standard length at maturity was approximately 20 mm in both sexes, and batch fecundity was approximately 1000–10 000 per female. The egg masses, guarded by the male, were laid on the undersurface of stones in freshwater. The pyriform eggs had long- and short-axis diameters of 0.54–0.58 mm and 0.49–0.50 mm, respectively. Newly hatched larvae (1.20–1.32 mm notochord length: NL) were poorly developed, with large yolk sacs and unopened mouths. Reproductive traits of Oxyurichthys tentacularis, a most demanded fish in Ashtamudi Lake, S. India were studied from samples collected using gill net, cast net and dip net during 2013–2015. Sexes were separated by observing the urogenital papilla in males and the gonads. Five maturity stages were identified by examining the gonads. Though advanced maturity stages were encountered throughout the year, higher preponderance of ripe gonads was discernible during August to November and February to April. Gonadosomatic indices indicated same trend in both sexes. The length at first maturity was 86.67 mm in males and 80.17 mm in females. The absolute fecundity ranged from 5,112 (102 mm TL) to 52,431(175 mm TL). Fecundity established linear relationships with total length, body weight and ovary weight. Ova diameter studies revealed that spawning takes place in batches at regular intervals and the species is a multiple spawner. The ratio of males to females was found to be 1:0.7 (χ2 = 10.8; p < 0.05). The pooled average for the whole period showed a perceptible dominance of male population in all of the months except in January (χ= 2.3; p > 0.05) could be observed.  相似文献

Size‐selective fishery harvest leads to phenotypic changes in fish reproductive traits. When these changes represent an evolutionary response of a stock, they may have severe consequences for future stock dynamics and yields. In freshwater ecosystems, reproductive traits may also be affected by other human impacts such as changes in system productivity. The present study uses regression analysis to evaluate the impacts of changes in lake trophy and of an intensive size‐selective harvest over several decades on the reproductive traits of common whitefish in Lake Constance between 1963 and 1999. Fecundity was strongly linked to lake trophy but was also related to the calendar year, suggesting an evolutionary response to size‐selective harvest and to massive stocking of the lake with hatchery‐reared larvae. The present study is an example of how fish reproductive traits are influenced by the combined action of various human impacts: changes in system productivity, size‐selective harvest and massive stocking.  相似文献

The spawning period of the common goby Pomatoschistus microps from 1993 to 1997 in the Vaccarès lagoon did not vary, except in 1997 when it was longer due to the reproduction of the young-of-the-year. Egg size and number, and reproductive allocation varied greatly with one year to another. Female common gobies increased both their fecundity per spawning act and their egg size from 1993 to 1995. The annual variation in the reproductive effort suggests a high phenotypic plasticity of reproductive traits in P. microps , in the face of environmental perturbations. In winter 1993–1994, a centennial flood of the Rhône River caused major hydrological changes in the lagoon in less than 1 week, affecting many invertebrates and fish for several years. The reproductive investment of the common goby increased, possibly as a consequence of those environmental changes.  相似文献

Length and mass data for 1260 (536 females, 683 males, 41 sex unknown) striped marlin Kajikia audax were collected at the fish markets of Tungkang, Singkang and Nanfangao from July 2004 to September 2010. Of these samples, 534 gonads (236 females and 298 males) ranging from 95 to 206 cm in eye‐to‐fork length (L EF ) and 8 to 88 kg in round mass (M R), were collected. Chi‐square tests indicated sex ratios were homogeneous among months in 2004 and 2006–2008, but not in 2005, 2009 and 2010; and there were significant differences in sex ratio by size. The overall sex ratio (R S ) differed significantly from the expected 0·5. Kajikia audax are sexually dimorphic and the proportions of females increased with size between 140 and 210 cm L EF . Reproductive activity was assessed using a gonado‐somatic index (I G ), external appearance of the gonads and histological examination and results indicated that the spawning season occurred from April to August with a peak in June to July. Based on histological observations and the distribution of oocyte diameters, K. audax are multiple spawners and their oocytes develop asynchronously. The estimated length‐at‐50% maturity (L EF50 ) was c . 181 cm (c . 4·8 years of age) for females. The proportion of reproductively active females in the spawning season with ovaries containing postovulatory follicles (0·27) indicated that they spawned every 3·7 days on average. The hydrated oocyte method estimated mean ± S.D. batch fecundity (F B ) to be 4·4 ± 2·02 million eggs; average relative fecundity was 53·6 ± 13·9 oocytes g?1 M R; and the average annual fecundity was 181·3 ± 48·3 million eggs. The parameters estimated in this study are key information for stock assessments of K. audax in the north‐western and central Pacific and will contribute to the conservation, management and sustainable yield of this species.  相似文献

This study was the first to investigate the key reproductive traits of the electric lantern fish Electrona risso (Myctophidae, n = 918) and the bigscale fishes (Melamphaidae) Melamphaes polylepis (n = 260) and Scopelogadus mizolepis (n = 649). Specimens of these mesopelagic species were collected in March and April 2015 in the eastern Central Atlantic (0–24° N, 20–26° W). Sex ratio was not significantly different from 1:1 in E. risso and M. polylepis but significantly skewed toward female dominance in S. mizolepis. Reproductive phases were determined macroscopically and by histological analyses on selected individuals. Female length at 50% maturity (L50) was 55.1 mm standard length (LS) in E. risso, with an observed female maximum length (Lmax) of 81.2 mm LS. M. polylepis females had an L50 of 40.2 mm LS and an Lmax of 86.7 mm LS. S. mizolepis had an L50 of 46 mm LS and an Lmax of 97.9 mm LS. The three species show histological features of iteroparity, but the E. risso population appears to occur in two year-classes and experience only one spawning season per lifetime in the study region. All three species are batch-spawners. A batch fecundity of 2668 eggs was estimated from one E. risso individual, with a relative batch fecundity of 369 eggs g−1 gonad-free body mass. M. polylepis had a batch fecundity of 1027 eggs and a relative batch fecundity of 149 eggs g−1 (n = 3). S. polylepis had a batch fecundity of 1545 eggs and a relative batch fecundity of 215 eggs g−1 (n = 21). The median gonado-somatic index during the actively spawning phase of E. risso was 4.5, significantly lower than that of M. polylepis (7.5) and S. mizolepis (7.1). No regressing or regenerating phases were observed in this study. Batch-spawning in all three species is suggested to be advantageous to cope with intra-annual variability in food supply and other risks for offspring survival. With what appears to be in effect a (facultative) semelparous strategy in combination with a short life span in E. risso, interannual differences would have a great effect on population dynamics of this species. Knowledge is still lacking on temporal aspects of reproduction such as the duration of the spawning season and the frequency of spawning, as well as age and growth.  相似文献

Recent data are presented on leafscale gulper shark Centrophorus squamosus and Portuguese dogfish Centroscymnus coelolepis collected during an extended sampling programme carried out at mainland Portuguese landing ports. Although there are some features common to all deep-water squaliform sharks, the two species have different reproductive strategies: C. squamosus has a lower fecundity and larger total length ( L T) at first maturity than C. coelolepis . Despite the scarcity of pregnant C. squamosus in the samples, the L T at birth was estimated at c. 440 mm. For C. coelolepis the results suggest the existence of a non-annual reproductive cycle with two breeding seasons in each year.  相似文献
