Distribution, population structure and reproduction are described for the southern lantern shark Etmopterus granulosus at the Chatham Rise, New Zealand. Depth of capture for E. granulosus ranged from 744 to 1420 m, with highest catch rates between 800–1200 m. More than twice as many females as males were captured, and the majority of sharks caught were mature, indicating that there may be segregation according to sex and size class. Only 10 of 492 female sharks captured contained ova in uteri, and none contained embryos. The absence of pregnant females suggests that they move to another area or depth prior to pupping. Size of sharks captured ranged from 20·0 to 78·8 cm total length. Females began to mature at 62 cm total length, and males at 52 cm. There was no evidence of a seasonal reproductive cycle. Ovulation appeared to occur when ova reached a diameter of 40–45 mm. The average number of ova in mature females was 12·7. This information is crucial for assessing the impact of fisheries on E. granulosus populations.  相似文献

Data on the length compositions and reproductive biology have been collected for Sphyrna lewini in Indonesian waters, in which this species makes an important contribution to the biomass of its artisanal and small‐scale fisheries. These data were obtained by recording relevant body measurements and counts for this species while visiting Indonesian fish landing sites. The fish, which had been caught by gillnetting and longlining, covered a wide length range and included substantial numbers of immature, maturing and mature individuals. The vast majority of S. lewini <1100 mm total length (LT) had been caught by gillnetting, whereas most of those above this length had been obtained through longlining. The number of embryos in pregnant females, which ranged from 14 to 41, with a mean of 25, was positively correlated with the LT of those females. Birth occurred at c. 400 mm LT and predominantly in October and November. The number of females was similar to that of males among smaller fish, but far greater than that of males among larger fish. This presumably reflects a faster growth and greater longevity of females, selectivity of longlining for females and a tendency for males to move outside the area fished. For males, the relationships between clasper length and the extent of its calcification, and also with sexual maturation and LT have been determined. Females attained maturity (LT50) at a far larger size (2285 mm) than males (1756 mm). The LT of virtually all females and all males taken by gillnetting were less than their respective LT50 at maturity, and c. 67 and 51% of the longline catches of females and males, respectively, were likewise immature. This feature, together with the substantial catches of S. lewini and the life cycle traits of elasmobranchs, suggest that this species is likely to be prone to overfishing in Indonesian waters. Furthermore, the removal of large numbers of this apex predator will presumably be affecting the trophic structure in the waters in which it is fished.  相似文献

In Mytilus, females carry predominantly maternal mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) but males carry maternal mtDNA in their somatic tissues and paternal mtDNA in their gonads. This phenomenon, known as doubly uniparental inheritance (DUI) of mtDNA, presents a major departure from the uniparental transmission of organelle genomes. Eggs of Mytilus edulis from females that produce exclusively daughters and from females that produce mostly sons were fertilized with sperm stained with MitoTracker Green FM, allowing observation of sperm mitochondria in the embryo by epifluorescent and confocal microscopy. In embryos from females that produce only daughters, sperm mitochondria are randomly dispersed among blastomeres. In embryos from females that produce mostly sons, sperm mitochondria tend to aggregate and end up in one blastomere in the two- and four-cell stages. We postulate that the aggregate eventually ends up in the first germ cells, thus accounting for the presence of paternal mtDNA in the male gonad. This is the first evidence for different behaviors of sperm mitochondria in developing embryos that may explain the tight linkage between gender and inheritance of paternal mitochondrial DNA in species with DUI.  相似文献

Abstract. Semelparity is one of the most drastic reproductive strategies found among marine invertebrates. It is frequently found in species whose members have small adult sizes and brood embryos internally. In this study, we describe the reproductive strategy of the bivalve Gaimardia bahamondei to explore the possible causes of the association between semelparity and internal brooding. Males of this species exhibit continuous gonadal activity throughout the breeding season. Apparently continuous spawning of sperm is associated with an abundance of captured sperm in the adfrontal region of the gill filaments of both males and females. Females are capable of brooding three cohorts of embryos simultaneously while also producing three new cohorts of oocytes. This suggests that females are able to generate at least six cohorts of embryos during the breeding season. Embryos are brooded in the suprabranchial chamber and are individually surrounded by a membrane with a projecting peduncle; embryos are anchored by this peduncle to the adfrontal region of the gill filaments. Members of the youngest cohort differ in size, color, and shell ornamentation from members of the two older cohorts. There is no difference between members of the two older cohorts in size, but there is with respect to coloring and shell ornamentation. The importance of the embryonic cohorts in terms of their percentage of the total number of embryos varied among brooding females, suggesting among‐female variation in the timing of release of the oldest cohort of embryos. Members of this cohort break loose from the gills, lose their surrounding membrane, and fall into the ventral region of the suprabranchial chamber, from which they are evacuated to the exterior. Continuous sperm production in males and the production of at least six cohorts of embryos in females suggest that the costs of reproduction are high, which may partly explain the semelparity identified in this species.  相似文献

Reproductive aspects ofAlopias superciliosus in the northwestern Pacific were described in detail, on the basis of 629 specimens (429 females and 200 males) collected from January 1984 to October 1984 and from October 1992 to March 1994.Alopias superciliosus embryos are oophagous. Six developmental stages (3 encapsulative and 3 posthatching) based on embryonic morphology and source of nutrition were recognized. The species bears 2 embryos per litter, their size at birth being between 135 and 140 cm TL. The sex ratio of embryos was 1∶1. Total length of females at maturity was 332–341. 1. cm; of males 270.1–287.6 cm. The gestation period could not be determined because most adult females were pregnant throughout the year. The typical reproductive strategy ofA. superciliosus is the production of a few large embryos per litter, with no fixed mating or birthing season.  相似文献

The stages of diapause embryos of A. elliotti reared in the laboratory were described, and the lengths of embryos of stage 19 were compared with a second group of diapause embryos of advanced ages. Collections of diapause embryos of the same species were made from wild populations during the autumn and winter of two consecutive years. The stages of embryos present in these samples were found to vary widely. The mean lengths of embryos in stage 19 from different populations were compared and found to differ with statistical significance. The numbers of retarded embryos in different populations were found to vary significantly between populations of diapause embryos. In two populations, mean lengths of embryos of stage 19 were found to differ from one year to the next. Post-diapause embryos were collected from wild populations in the spring of two consecutive years and their stages described. No significant difference was found in the incidence of retardation in post-diapause samples. Results of these studies and those of other authors indicate that there may be wide developmental variation between populations of acridid embryos as well as in one population in two different years. Rearing adult A. elliotti in varying numbers under two different environmental conditions was found to produce significant effects upon the rate of development and variability of their embryonic progeny. Embryos laid by young females were found to be more variable, in general, and to develop more slowly than those laid by older females.  相似文献

Models of parent-offspring conflict concerning levels of caregiving centre on conflict resolution by offspring control, compromise or offspring 'honest signalling' that parents use to maximize their own fitness. Recent empirical studies on motivational control of parental feeding of offspring are interpreted as supporting the latter model. Here, we examine parental care in an amphipod, Crangonyx pseudogracilis, which directs care to embryos in a brood pouch. Embryo removal and transplantation elucidated causal factors that determine levels of caregiving. In the short-term, females with all embryos removed reduced care activities, but partial embryo removal did not affect caregiving, evidence of 'unshared' parental care. In the long-term, females with all embryos removed ceased care. Thus, females have a maternal state that is maintained by stimuli from offspring. Transplantation of early/late stage embryos among females originally carrying early/late stage embryos revealed that stimuli from embryos indicate their age-dependent needs, but only modify caregiving within the constraints of a changing endogenous maternal state. Thus, we demonstrate that mothers and offspring share motivational control of care. However, we highlight the inappropriate use of motivational data in reaching conclusions about the resolution of parent-offspring conflict.  相似文献

The weights of embryos and their placentas obtained by blastocysts of CBA/LacY and DBA/2 mouse strains transfer in recipient females of BALB/c strain and also by blastocysts of BALB/c mouse strain transfer in recipient females of CBA/LacY strain were analysed on the 16th gestation day. It is shown that placental weights are determined by genotypic peculiarities of embryos, although comparative placental weights of different strain embryos could also depend on females fertility. The weight of allogenic embryos (developed from transferred blastocysts) significantly excessed the weight of singenic embryos, and most significant differences were noted in females with small number of embryos. The possibilities to solve some applied and fundamental problems of mammalian reproduction given by the method of interstrain and interbreed early stage embryos transfer are discussed.  相似文献

Maternally inherited, cellular endosymbionts can enhance their fitness by biasing host sex ratio in favor of females. Male killing (MK), an extreme form of sex-ratio manipulation, is selectively advantageous, if the death of males results in increased microbe transmission through female siblings. In live-bearing hosts, females typically produce more embryos than are brought to term, and reproductive compensation through maternal resource reallocation from dead male embryos to female siblings provides a direct, physiological mechanism that could increase the number of daughters born to infected females, thereby promoting MK endosymbiont spread. In this study, a Wolbachia-infected line and an uninfected line of the viviparous pseudoscorpion, Cordylochernes scorpioides were genetically homogenized for nuclear DNA by repeated backcrossing of the infected line with the uninfected, laboratory population. Photomicroscopy of early-stage embryos demonstrated that female C. scorpioides invariably produced an excess of embryos, with Wolbachia-infected females producing as many early-stage embryos as uninfected female controls. However, Wolbachia-infected females that successfully carried broods to term gave birth to significantly fewer offspring, indicating that the extreme female bias characteristic of their broods results from the killing rather than the feminization of male embryos. Infected females that carried broods to term gave birth to significantly larger nymphs and did produce 10% more female offspring than uninfected females. However, the slight transmission advantage that the MK Wolbachia accrued from this reproductive compensation appears to be heavily outweighed by the high rate of spontaneous brood abortion suffered by infected females.  相似文献

The content of estrogens was determined in tissues of the guinea pig embryos, blood of pregnant females and placenta by means of biological testing. It was the highest in embryonic ovaries at all developmental stages. The sexual dimorphism in estrogen content was found in embryonic suprarenals: it was higher in females than in males. The estrogen content in blood of male embryos and pregnant females was similar but lower than that in female embryos. Estrogens were also found in placenta and their traces were detected in spleen, brain, hypothalamus and uterus. The problem of possible participation of estrogens in the sex differentiation of female embryos is discussed.  相似文献

In this paper, the population biology of the velvet belly lanternshark Etmopterus spinax was studied and life‐history coefficients determined. Age was estimated from sections of the second dorsal spine and validated by marginal increment analysis. Males attained a maximum age of 8 years while 11 year‐old females were found. Several growth models were fitted and compared for both size‐at‐age and mass‐at‐age data, showing that even though this is a small‐sized species, it has a relatively slow growth rate. This species matures late, specifically at 49·6 and 42·5% of the maximum observed ages for males and females, respectively. It has a low fecundity, with a mean ovarian fecundity of 9·94 oocytes and a mean uterine fecundity of 7·59 embryos per reproductive cycle. This species seems to have a long reproductive cycle, and even though no conclusive data were obtained, a 2–3 year cycle is possible. The estimated coefficients indicate that this species has a vulnerable life cycle, typical of deepwater squalid sharks. Given the high fishing pressures that it is suffering in the north‐east Atlantic, this fish may already be facing severe declines or in risk of facing them in the near future.  相似文献

In the newt Pleurodelles waltlii, males and females trisomic for chromosomes 8, 10 and 11 are fertile. Crosses between such trisomics and diploids were carried out. Progeny analysis showed that an extra chromosome is transmitted to half of the gametes of both males and females trisomics. The extra chromosome apparently causes interference in the regular mechanics of meiotic division, so that trisomics throw nonparental aneuploids and polyploids in their progenies. Moreover, some descendants develop chromosome anomalies during embryonic life ; thus, the progeny of trisomics include diploids, parentaltype trisomics, and embryos with new chromosome anomalies. Morphology and chromosome anomalies of the embryos are compared. A possible explanation for the secondarily acquired anomalies are discussed.  相似文献

Multiple paternity was investigated in the starry smooth‐hound shark, Mustelus asterias Cloquet, 1821. Analysis of 12 pregnant females and their embryos, at four microsatellite loci, showed that at least 58% carried multiply‐sired litters. Paternal skew was observed, with one male siring most of the embryos within a litter, although no patterns of association were detected between the identity of the father and the size or the uterine position of the embryos. Sperm storage was observed in the oviducal glands of all twelve females. Results shed light on the complexity of reproductive strategies and selective processes in M. asterias. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 111 , 119–125.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of collecting oocytes and semen from pigtailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) and to establish a protocol for the production of viable embryos that would be suitable for transfer into surrogate females. A total of 82 oocytes were collected from a total of four females (on 2 d with two females each). Semen was collected from the same male on both occasions with respective ejaculate volumes of 0.55 and 0.1 mL containing 2 x 10(9) and 6.6 x 10(8)sperm/mL. Following insemination and after 48 h in culture, 42 (51.2%) of the oocytes had cleaved. Of these, 21 were selected based on developmental stage and their morphology and cryopreserved. The remainder was kept in culture for an additional 5 d, at which time three had reached the expanded blastocyst stage. A total of five transfers were performed with frozen-thawed embryos; two of these resulted in pregnancies and the birth of infants. The results of this study demonstrated that oocytes can be retrieved from pigtailed macaques and that such oocytes can be inseminated and cultured in vitro to the blastocyst stage and give rise to viable offspring after transfer into surrogate females.  相似文献

Summary Meiotic parthenogenesis of a type not previously described was found in Pulvinaria hydrangeae Steinweden. During diakinesis 8 bivalents were formed. At prometaphase the spindle was tripolar but anaphase I was bipolar and normal. After completion of division of the primary oocyte, the following sequence occurred: 1. polar body I divided, usually into 3 products; 2. the secondary oocyte divided to yield the egg pronucleus and polar body II; 3. the egg pronucleus divided into its two haploid products; and 4. the second polar body divided. The products of the egg pronucleus fused while dividing to restore the diploid chromosome number; this division may be equated to the first cleavage division. The products of the polar bodies did not take part in the formation of the embryo proper or the mycetocytes.Among the embryos produced by females of two out of the three populations studied some of the embryos showed a heterochromatic chromosome set, characteristic of males in this and related families. The reproductive system of the females as well as the eggs did not contain any sperm; thus the male embryos were apparently produced parthenogenetically. The euchromatic and heterochromatic chromosome sets were genetically identical, since they both originated from the egg pronucleus by mitosis. The heterochromatization of one set but not the other might be due in part to a previous difference in their position in the cytoplasm. The females were completely homozygous yet they produced male and female embryos. Thus it appears that sex determination in the group does not depend on the segregation of genetic factors in either males or females. In addition to male and female embryos, three types of degenerating embryos were observed. It is believed that these embryos were formed by polyploid somatic cells which invaded abnormal eggs and embryos and took over development.  相似文献

Abstract

The gonads of 528 female and 821 male stoats were examined. The weights of ovaries and testes in adults peaked simultaneously in October, the season of births and of post-partum oestrus. Of 73 females, 78% had even numbers of nipples, mostly 8 or 10. The mean number of embryos in 13 pregnancies was 8.8 (6–13), and embryo weights ranged from 0.005 g to 2.9 g. Of 11 pregnant females, 8 contained fewer embryos than corpora lutea, and there was evidence of transuterine migration of blastocysts in 6. All but 2 of 451 females caught in December–July inclusive carried corpora lutea of delay. Few adult and no young females were found in oestrus in September–October, though adult males were fertile from August to February (no first-year males were fertile). There was some evidence that the breeding season started later at more southerly latitudes in both males and females. The mean number of corpora lutea per female was 9.7 (n = 439), and there was a significant inverse correlation between counts for the 2 ovaries of one individual. There was generally no significant variation in fecundity of females with age, body weight, or year. Of 11 females which were considered to have lost their litters, 10 were collected in beech (Nothofagus) forests. Four females and 9 males had abnormal gonads; the most severe abnormality was an ovarian teratoma of unknown pathology.  相似文献

The grey gurnard Eutrigla gurnardus (L.) has been identified by ICES as a potential commercial species in the NE Atlantic with recommendations made to derive information on population biology for stock assessment purposes. However, data on the population biology of this species is limited. In this study, data on the age, growth and maturity of grey gurnard were collected by otter trawling in the coastal waters of northwest Wales and Eastern Anglesey. Total length (TL) of fish sampled ranged between 2.1–33.0 cm (male) and 1.9–36.9 cm (female) with the majority of female (70.8%) fish between 11 and 20 cm TL and male fish (70.5%) between 11 and 18 cm TL. The percentage of fish >20 cm TL was larger for females (30.4%) compared to males (17.6%). Total weight (TW) for female and male grey gurnard in the stratified subsample ranged from 1.9 to 499.9 g for females and 2.1–390.0 g for males, with the majority of female (66.3%) and male (76.1%) fish between 10 and 60 g. TL/TW relations for male and female fish and both sexes combined were: TW = 0.006TL3.07, TW = 0.007TL3.03 and TW = 0.007TL3.05 respectively. Age structure (based on otolith reading) ranged between 0.5 and 7.5 years old for females and 0.5 to 5.5 years old for male with the majority of female (41.7%) and male (46.0%) fish aged as 1.5 years old. The age structure of female and male grey gurnards was significantly different with the majority of older fish (>2.5 years) being female. The von Bertalanffy growth functions were calculated as Lt = 32.4[1 ? e?0.24(t + 1.41)] for males, Lt = 45.9[1 ? e?0.16(t + 1.37)] for females and Lt = 44.0[1 ? e?0.18(t + 1.20)] for both sexes combined. Instantaneous rates of total mortality were similar for males and females and the combined Z value 1.00 year?1 with the natural mortality rate estimated as 0.33 year?1. The size at 50% maturity (L50) was estimated to be 25.3 cm TL for males, females and for both sexes combined. Age at 50% maturity (A50) was 3.2 years for both males and females. The results of this study provide the first information on the population biology of E. gurnardus in the Irish Sea, the first detailed study in the NE Atlantic since 1985 and helps to address the data gap identified by ICES in knowledge of the population biology of this species.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: The prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) is an emerging animal model for biomedical research because of its rich sociobehavioral repertoire. Recently, lentiviral transgenic technology has been used to introduce the gene encoding the green fluorescent protein (GFP) into the prairie vole germline. However, the efficiency of transgenesis in this species is limited by the inability to reliably produce large numbers of fertilized embryos. Here we examined several factors that may contribute to variability in superovulation success including, age and parentage of the female, and latency to mating after being placed with the male. METHODS: Females produced from 5 genetically distinct breeder lines were treated with 100 IU of pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) and immediately housed with a male separated by a perforated Plexiglas divider. Ovulation was induced 72 hr later with 30IU of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and 2 hrs later mating was allowed. RESULTS: Superovulation was most efficient in young females. For example, females aged 6-11 weeks produced more embryos (14 +/- 1.4 embryos) as compared to females aged 12-20 weeks (4 +/- 1.6 embryos). Females aged 4-5 weeks did not produce embryos. Further, females that mated within 15 min of male exposure produced significantly more embryos than those that did not. Interestingly, there was a significant effect of parentage. For example, 12 out of 12 females from one breeder pair superovulated (defined as producing 5 or more embryos), while only 2 out of 10 females for other lines superovulated. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this work suggest that age and genetic background of the female are the most important factors contributing to superovulation success and that latency to mating is a good predictor of the number of embryos to be recovered. Surprisingly we found that cohabitation with the male prior to mating is not necessary for the recovery of embryos but is necessary to recover oocytes. This information will dramatically reduce the number of females required to generate embryos for transgenesis in this species.  相似文献

Husbandry and health of the African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis, greatly influences the quality of oocytes produced. One factor affecting oocyte quality is the water conditions in which females are maintained. Dechlorination and adequate salt concentration are known to affect oocytes, but water hardness has not been considered an important factor in Xenopus husbandry by the research community. We found that, when females were kept in soft water or water with marine salts alone, even when it was cooled to 17 to 18 degrees C, the quality of oocytes decreased; only 20 to 25% of resulting embryos developed to tailbud stages. Survival and normal development of embryos increased significantly within one month of addition to the laboratory housing water of salts that mimic conditions in African Rift Valley lakes. These salts greatly increased water hardness; development of embryos to tailbud stages remained high (50 to 70% on average) for more than a year after their addition to the water housing females. Water from South African ponds where X. laevis are collected, and from wells used by the major suppliers of X. laevis, also was moderately to very hard. Our results suggest that X. laevis is naturally adapted to hard water, and indicate that increasing general hardness during laboratory housing is more important for oocyte quality and embryo development than is increasing carbonate hardness (alkalinity) in the water used to house females.  相似文献

Periclimenes paivai is notable for its symbiotic lifestyle with jellyfish. The objective of this study was to investigate the fecundity and reproductive output of females, and specifically to determine whether females protected in their host have a greater reproductive success than other shrimp species. All anatomical parts of the medusae were analyzed and the P. paivai individuals were separated. Among 83 females analyzed, 65 presented embryos in the first developmental stage, and 18 were in the final stage of development. The mean fecundity was 229.08 ± 120.04 in initial-stage embryos and 191 ± 114.76 in final-stage embryos. We observed a positive relationship between the embryo number and the female size; however, the embryo number was not related to the embryonic stage, which indicates that females did not lose their embryos during the incubation period. The weight of brood mass during production is closely related to the female weight according to the results of linear regression, as fecundity increased with female size. In its symbiosis, P. paivai can increase the amount of energy used to produce embryos (mean reproductive output = 10.38%) and can elevate the reproductive success.  相似文献
