Seasonal absence of fishes in tidepools of a boreal environment (Maine,USA)   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
John R. Moring 《Hydrobiologia》1990,194(2):163-168
Tidepool fishes of a rocky, boreal community in Maine (USA) were sampled periodically from September 1979 to September 1988. Unlike tidepool fish communities in many other areas of the world, those in Maine included no year-round residents. Several of the 22 species among the 1,135 fishes collected occupied tidepools seasonally as nursery areas. In particular, juvenile lumpfish,Cyclopterus lumpus, used tidepools from June to December during their first two years of life. Disappearance of these species from tidepools in winter appeared to be primarily a result of low water temperatures and reduced algal cover in pools.Cooperators are the University of Maine, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Wildlife Management Institute.  相似文献

Totals of 2.67 x 105 and 7.56 x 105 juvenile red sea bream of three size groups (10, 20 and 40 mm t.l.) marked with a fluorescent substance in the otolith were released in News Bay, Oita Prefecture, Japan, in July 1987 and June 1988, respectively; the aim was to estimate growth and mortality of different developmental stages.
Of fish released in 1987 and 1988, 10 618 and 4413, respectively were recaptured during those two years. Released fish remained in the bay until the end of summer, and afterwards migrated out towards open waters. Fish of the 40-mm group released in 1987 grew to over 200 mm t.l. in one year. Mean growth rate for 19 days after release was higher in the 40-mm group (0.87 mm day−1) than in the 20-mm group (0.74mm day−1). Survival rates over 19 days were 59.0 and 10.1 % for 40-mm and 20-mm fish, respectively, in 1987, and those over 30 days were 69.2, 3.3 and 0.0% for 40-mm, 20-mm and 10-mm fish, respectively, in 1988.
Cannibalism was indicated by the presence of marked otoliths for 20-mm fish in the stomachs of a few 40-mm individuals recaptured 2 days after release. Size-dependent growth and size-selective mortality were both noted in juvenile red sea bream, i.e. the relative size differential between larger and smaller individuals was maintained in the period between marking and recapture, and mortality was inversely proportional to size.  相似文献

Growth and postspawning survival of lumpfish Cyclopterus lumpus are described by mark‐recapture experiments using juveniles in offshore areas in the north‐east Atlantic Ocean and spawning adults in coastal Norway and Iceland. A female fish tagged as a juvenile and recaptured as an adult matured in a period of 18 months, providing the first observation on development in a wild C. lumpus. The von Bertalanffy growth function, fitted to data from recaptured fish, was used to estimate K and L and recaptured fish spawning after a year at liberty indicated a postspawning survival of c. 10% in Iceland.  相似文献

Molecular analyses of the mitochondrial genome using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) were utilized to determine the existence of discrete populations of the tidepool sculpin Oligocottus maculosus from the Barkley Sound region of south-western Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Fifty-five haplotypes were found with three haplotypes making up 38, 16 and 8% of the total sample, respectively. Within individual tidepools, haplotype diversity ranged from 0·30 to 0·92, but haplotypes were typically closely related to one another (nucleotide diversity ranged from 0·0004 to 0·005). The majority of haplotype variation (96–97%) was located within tidepools, but a significant amount of variation ( c . 3–4%) was detected among tidepools within single islands. By contrast, there was no significant differentiation among islands or between samples from the Barkley Sound area and a single sample from north-eastern Vancouver Island. The results suggest a low level of population structure within the sample area and that the distribution of haplotypes and haplotype divergences represents a demographic expansion from a single ancestral lineage beginning between 300 000 and 1 000 000 years ago. The low level of population subdivision resolved suggests that despite their ecological specialization in tidepool habitats, tidepool sculpins are influenced by demographic and genetic processes that operate on spatial scales much larger than single tidepools or islands.  相似文献

An intertidal fish community in Trinidad Bay, Humboldt County, California, was studied between November 1968 and May 1970. The nursery function of rocky tidal pools for juveniles of subtidal fishes was indicated by peaks in indices of seasonally abundant fish species in summer. The proportion of juveniles of seasonal species in the intertidal fish community rose significantly in collections of late spring and summer, to a maximum of 35% of the individuals collected in July. Annual dominance was relatively high due to abundant populations of the tidepool sculpin, Oligocottus maculosus, but two other fish species were also encountered in tidepools every month of the year.  相似文献

Recent studies suggest that nutrient variation influences rocky intertidal community structure, however empirical evidence is rare. In the Gulf of Maine, tidepools that occur on seagull feeding roosts are potentially subjected to regular nutrient loading from seagull guano. The results of a survey conducted on Swan's Island, ME show that roost tidepools have very low macroinvertebrate and macroalgal diversity as well as very high phytoplankton biomass compared to non-roost tidepools. An experiment presented here tested basic food chain hypotheses in tidepool communities. These basic food chain models predict that in a tidepool with one trophic level (phytoplankton only), phytoplankton biomass will increase when nutrients are enriched. In contrast, these models predict that in two trophic level tidepools (phytoplankton and mussels) herbivory will prevent an increase in phytoplankton biomass when nutrients are enriched. A short term 2×2 factorially designed field experiment was used to test this basic conceptual model using herbivory by mussels and enrichment with nitrogen as the main effects. The results of this investigation are consistent with the predictions of basic food chain models, and indicate that over the short time interval of a few days, herbivory by mussels is sufficient to maintain low phytoplankton levels following enrichment with nitrogen. Experimental enrichment with phosphorus in this study had no effect on phytoplankton biomass. The results of this study suggest that periodic pulses of nitrogen into tidepools will have little effect on phytoplankton biomass when mussels are present and that longer-term chronic nitrogen influxes may be driving the patterns of community structure in tidepools occurring on roosts.  相似文献

Among all validation methods of age determination in fish, release of known age and marked specimens gives the most reliable information. We carried out a tag-recapture experiment on Notothenia rossii at Potter Cove, to validate, for first time for this species using this method, the principle of annual deposition of an annulus in scales and otoliths. Of 132 juvenile specimens (TL = 22.1–38.1 cm) tagged and released in successive years from 2004 to 2010, 7 were recaptured at the same site after periods of 1–13 months. In scales of five specimens recovered after 10–13 months, one extra annulus was laid down, exhibiting an additional winter zone of closely spaced sclerites. Consistently, the same analysis in two individuals marked and recaptured during the same summer, after 1–3 months at liberty, did not show the deposition of an additional annulus. All the fish tagged or recaptured during the experiment period (December to March) showed in their scales an edge zone of widely spaced sclerites, in agreement with the known pattern of growth in summer. Likewise, an analysis in selected specimens showed good consistency between the numbers of sclerites deposited in scales and the time of fish release. The comparative analysis between scales taken at recapture and otoliths of the same individual allowed a simultaneous counting of the annuli with complete correspondence. The growth in length of fish ranged from 0.5 to 6.1 cm, depending on the time of release.  相似文献

This paper quantifies the spatial distribution of zooxanthellae (ZX) and zoochlorellae (ZC), two algal symbionts common to the temperate anemone, Anthopleura xanthogrammica, in relation to shore height. Anemones in tidepools and crevices had varying algal proportions: >0.90 ZC (green anemones), 0.10 to 0.90 ZX (mixed), and >0.90 ZX (brown). Brown anemones are primarily found in the high intertidal and the upper region of tidepools. Mixed anemones are most common at intermediate shore heights and green anemones are exclusive to the low shore and at increasing depth in tidepools. Microhabitat was also important to algal proportion, as anemones in crevices had greater proportions of ZC than anemones in tidepools at the same shore height. In a reciprocal transplant experiment, A. xanthogrammica were moved between high and low shallow tidepools. All anemones moved from a low to a high tidepool exhibited a shift from ZC to ZX populations, while the anemones transplanted from high to low tidepools maintained ZX dominance. This is the first documentation that field algal populations can shift from ZC to ZX in Anthopleura. The field survey and transplant study results support the hypothesis that the relative abundance of ZX and ZC in A. xanthogrammica is influenced by the environmental gradient associated with shore height and microhabitat.  相似文献

The composition, abundance, species richness and diversity of a rocky intertidal fish assemblage in the central zone of the Pacific coast of Colombia were determined. From July to December 2002, 10 tidepools with volumes ranging from 0·087 to 1·350 m3 were surveyed. A total of 893 fishes belonging to 14 species and 12 families were found. The most abundant species were Bathygobius ramosus and Abudefduf concolor , representing 71% of all fishes collected. Bathy gobius ramosus , Malacoctenus zonifer and Gobiesox adustus were residents, Abudefduf concolor , Abudefduf troschelii , Microsphatodon bairdii , Chaenomugil proboscideus , Halichoeres aestuaricola and Echidna nocturna were transients, and Apogon dovii , Sargocentron suborbitalis , Cerdale sp, Rypticus nigripinnis and Ctenochaetus marginatus were considered as accidental visitors. The temporal and spatial variation of assemblage structure was tested. The fish assemblage structure did not differ between months and there was not a clear relationship between tidepool surface area and depth, and community variables. Diversity and species richness were negatively correlated with tidepool height. It is suggested that the tidepool assemblage was stable and resilient in time on short (annual) scales. The constancy in time and space could have been a consequence of eurytopic features of the organisms and the lack of drastic seasonal changes in the tropics.  相似文献

Synopsis Fish collections from 19 tidepools on a rock plateau at Martins Bay, on the east coast of Barbados, taken on three occasions (1981,1983 and 1987) contained 2078 individuals of 63 species. The number of species, individuals and total biomass increased with pool size. Partial residents, primarily juveniles of reef species, comprised 44% of species, 36% of numbers, and 26% of biomass. True and partial residents were of similar sizes. Most of the latter grow to larger sizes than those observed in the pools, indicating that the use of tidepools by fishes is size-dependent. Species richness, numbers of individuals and biomass in individual pools was positively associated with pool size. These relationships did not vary among sampling occasions. Species composition and relative abundance was also found to be similar among sampling occasions, leading to the conclusion that the tidepool assemblages are resilient and stable.  相似文献

The role that hsp70 plays in influencing thermal tolerance of a whole animal is not clearly understood. We explored this question by examining liver hsp70 response in the tidepool sculpin (Oligocottus maculosus) and fluffy sculpin (O. snyderi), which have distinct distribution patterns in the intertidal zone. The tidepool sculpin is in upper and lower tidepools, while the fluffy sculpin is exclusively in lower tidepools during a low tide. We conducted experiments in order to investigate: (1) habitat water temperatures; (2) upper thermal tolerance limits; (3) the cellular hsp70 response to changes in water temperature in nature; (4) induction temperatures for hepatic hsp70 and hsp70 mRNA; and (5) effects of long-term heat stress on liver hsp70 levels, in these sculpins. Accordingly, we found: (1) the tidepool sculpin was exposed to a wider temperature range in nature; (2) the tidepool sculpin had higher lethal and induction temperatures for hsp70; (3) the liver hsp70 level of the tidepool sculpin was less sensitive to changes in water temperatures; and (4) the tidepool sculpin had higher constitutive hsp70 levels in nature, compared with the fluffy sculpin. From these results, we proposed that the less thermally sensitive tidepool sculpin may enhance its thermal tolerance by having a large pool of cellular hsp70, thus allowing it to inhabit the upper intertidal zone with relatively large and unpredictable fluctuations in environmental variables.  相似文献

Synopsis Distribution patterns and relative abundances were determined for rocky intertidal fishes in central California. Distributions were described relative to a categorization scheme of tidepools based on certain biotic and physical criteria. The fishes displayed a variety of distributions over tidepool categories and showed some segregation within categories.Cottids were the predominant tidepool fishes encountered, withOligocottus snyderi andClinocottus analis comprising 62% of all captures. The cebidichthyidCebidichthys violaceus and the stichaeidAnoplarchus purpurescens were also relatively common and dominated the out-of-water microhabitat.Oligocottus snyderi showed a minor shift in distribution over tidepool categories between seasons, and C. analis showed none, but both species varied substantially in abundance. Temporal changes in abundance of the more common species indicated seasonal trends, but the duration of the census period was insufficient to verify this.It is concluded that while species interactions may have influenced the observed patterns of habitat partitioning, the roles of predation and competition cannot be unambiguously defined. Presently, neither these nor historical factors can be discounted from having significantly influenced the evolution of the intertidal fish community.  相似文献

Natural body marks on Sphyraena barracuda were recorded with digital images to identify individual fish. Over 18 months, 60 fish were photographed in situ , eight of which were re-photographed at later dates. Re-photographed fish were all large adults (>70 cm total length) and were all seen within 200 m of the site where they were originally observed 10–318 days prior. Over the same period and area, 116 fish were tagged using T-bar tags, yet none of these fish were recaptured. Natural body marks are thus an effective means of identifying and monitoring behaviour of individuals.  相似文献

The feeding and growth of wild juvenile Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus (Temminck et Shlegel), collected after experimental mass releases of marked hatchery-reared juveniles of the same species, was examined at Wada Beach, Wakasa Bay, the Japan Sea, in 1997 and 1998. The feeding and growth of wild juveniles in the eastern area where the hatchery-reared juveniles were released and recaptured were compared with those in the western area (control area) where no hatchery-reared juveniles were recaptured. The stomach contents of both hatchery-reared and wild juveniles collected in the eastern and western areas consisted mainly of mysids in the early season (late-May to mid-June), and fish larvae in the late season (late-June to early July) in both 1997 and 1998. The stomach content index (SI) of juvenile flounder collected in the eastern and western areas showed that the feeding conditions followed similar patterns. However, the percent of empty stomachs in the wild flounder juveniles collected within 4 days after the mass release in the eastern area was as high as 10-30% in 1997 and 40% in 1998, whereas it was 0% in the western area in both years. Otolith microstructure analysis showed that the growth rate in the eastern area was not significantly different before and after release in both years. These results demonstrate that the mass release of hatchery-reared juvenile flounder temporarily affects the feeding efficiency of the cohabiting wild juveniles, but not to an extent that significantly reduces the growth rate.  相似文献

We examined the extent of movements of juvenile Florida pompano, Trachinotus carolinus, and gulf kingfish, Menticirrhus littoralis, along an open ocean beach. Fishes were collected by seine at three sites along Masonboro Island and Carolina Beach, NC between 7 June and 7 July 1995. All specimens 40 mm standard length (SL) were tagged with coded wire tags and released at the capture sites. Between 7 July and 9 August and on 15–16 September Masonboro Island and northern Carolina Beach were surveyed for tagged fish. A controlled tag mortality/retention study was conducted for both species. Overall, 1569 Florida pompano (40–135 mm SL) were tagged. Sixty-one (3.9%) of these were recaptured, and only eight moved away from the original tagging sites. The largest movements by two Florida pompano were 2.1 and 10.5 km. Many fish remained at their original tagging sites for 21–27 days. Of 488 gulf kingfish (36–158 mm SL) tagged, 16 (3.3%) were recaptured. Gulf kingfish also exhibited little movement away from tagging sites during the study, with individuals remaining at original tagging sites up to 21 days. Stock size estimates for Florida pompano ranged from 3354 to 4670 among the tagging sites, with densities ranging from 1.9 to 2.6 fish m–2. The remarkable site fidelity exhibited by these two species suggests that resources were not limiting or that predation pressure was not high enough to cause large scale movements during the study. This implies that local disturbances could impact behavior or survival of juvenile fishes in the surf zone.  相似文献

1. In many species, individuals will alter their foraging strategy in response to changes in prey density. However, previous work has shown that prey density has differing effects on the foraging mode decisions of ectotherms as compared with endotherms. This is likely due to differences in metabolic demand; however, the relationship between metabolism and foraging mode choice in ectotherms has not been thoroughly studied. 2. Juvenile lumpfish Cyclopterus lumpus forage using one of two modes: they can actively search for prey while swimming, or they can 'sit-and-wait' for prey while clinging to the substrate using a ventral adhesive disk. The presence of these easily distinguishable foraging modes makes juvenile lumpfish ideal for the study of foraging mode choice in ectotherms. 3. Behavioural observations conducted during laboratory experiments showed that juvenile lumpfish predominantly use the 'cling' foraging mode when prey is abundant, but resort to the more costly 'swim' mode to seek out food when prey is scarce. The metabolic cost of active foraging was also quantified for juvenile lumpfish using swim-tunnel respirometry, and a model was devised to predict the prey density at which lumpfish should switch between the swim and cling foraging modes to maximize energy intake. 4. The results of this model do not agree with previous observations of lumpfish behaviour, and thus it appears that juvenile lumpfish do not try to maximize their net energetic gain. Instead, our data suggest that juvenile lumpfish forage in a manner that reduces activity and conserves space in their limited aerobic scope. This behavioural flexibility is of great benefit to this species, as it allows young individuals to divert energy towards growth as opposed to activity. In a broader context, our results support previous speculation that ectotherms often forage in a manner that maintains a minimum prey encounter rate, but does not necessarily maximize net energy gain.  相似文献

Dense populations of a new species of dinoflagellate, Peridinium gregarium, have been found in a limited number of small rock tidepools on the coast of southern California. The organism is present throughout the year, but during periods of low temperatures and heavy tides it remains on the bottom of the pools in small aggregations. At other seasons P. gregarium leaves the aggregations during the morning hours and collects around the upper surface of small rocks in masses held together by a mucous matrix. Oxygen bubbles accumulated in the matrix eventually float the mass to the surface of the tidepool. During the afternoon or evening, the individuals return to the bottom aggregations leaving the matrix behind. Field and laboratory studies have attempted to define the nature of this organism's tidepool habitat and factors involved in the regulation of its diurnal movements.  相似文献

Ozark cavefish, Amblyopsis rosae, is a threatened species endemic to the Springfield Plateau of the Ozark Highlands in Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. One of the largest known Ozark cavefish populations, located in Logan Cave, Arkansas, was surveyed 25 times over a two-year period between 1993 and 1995. During the study, 147 Ozark cavefish > 30 mm (TL) were marked with visual implant tags and 140 Ozark cavefish were available for recapture; 68 were recaptured 189 times and the rest (72) were never recaptured. Individual Ozark cavefish persisted in Logan Cave for a relatively short time. Only 14% of 80 fish tagged during a previous study in 1992 were recaptured during this study, and half of all recaptured fish disappeared within three months. However, if a fish persisted for at least seven months in the cave, its probability of being recaptured over an additional year was high. Maximum persistence of a tagged fish was 28 months, suggesting these fish have a maximum life-span of 4–5 years. Growth averaged 0.6 mm per month, with maximum recorded growth of 6 mm per month and a maximum size of 65 mm TL. Smaller fish grew faster than larger fish but growth rates were sporadic, with several mid-sized fish (45–49 mm) showing little growth (0–3 mm year-1) while some fish > 50 mm grew up to 12 mm year-1. Most fish gained in length during April–October, the same period a maternity colony of gray bats occupied the cave. Gross Ozark cavefish movement over the study period ranged up to 1002 m, with a mean movement of 1.2 m day-1; movement was positively correlated with Ozark cavefish total length. Death seemed the most likely explanation for loss of tagged Ozark cavefish, including fish that emigrated out of the cave. Little up-stream movement was recorded between reaches and did not account for loss of tagged fish. Reproduction within the cave and immigration from the aquifer accounted for persistence of Ozark cavefish in Logan Cave.  相似文献

Growth and reproduction of tidepool sculpins (Oligocottus maculosus) from three sites in Puget Sound, Washington State, USA were characterized. One site was a sandy, gently sloping beach, the second was an exposed rock headland with minimal algal cover, and the third was an exposed rock headland with numerous tidepools containing abundant algal cover. Length-weight relationships for sculpins did not differ significantly between sexes within sites. Population age structure, growth rate and recruitment varied among the three study sites using data pooled across both sexes. Young-of-the-year sculpins comprised 91% of the population at the exposed headland site with minimal algal cover but only 6% at the headland with abundant algal cover. Selective predation by great blue herons (Ardea herodias) upon tidepool sculpins larger than 45 mm total length assisted in the maintainance of these age structures. A maximum gonadosomatic index of 28.5 was calculated; this index correlated poorly with either age, length or somatic weight. Diameters of unshed ova from preserved tidepool sculpins sampled prior to spawning fell into three classes. Comparison of the mean egg size of each mode and the number of modes present in preserved sculpins with similar data from tidepool sculpins that spawned in the laboratory suggested that spawning occurred twice yearly from at least January through August.  相似文献

High-zone intertidal pools along the Oregon coast are a nutrient-poor habitat within a nutrient-replete upwelling ecosystem. However, many seaweed species occur in tide pools, especially when sessile invertebrates are present. By converting particulate nitrogen into ammonium, filter-feeding invertebrates can mediate the supply of nitrogen to seaweeds in tidepools. Invertebrates excrete substantial quantities of ammonium into tidepools, which seaweeds take up and assimilate as a nitrogen source. We investigated the ecological consequences of this local-scale nitrogen source by evaluating the influence of invertebrate-excreted ammonium on the growth and diversity of seaweeds in high-intertidal pools. We measured the growth of a macroalga commonly found in high-intertidal pools, the red alga Odonthalia floccosa (Esp.) Falkenb., when mussels were present and absent. Over a 24-day tidal cycle, accumulation rates of inorganic nitrogen were 3 times higher, and rates of nitrogen uptake were 4.5 times higher, when mussels were present, resulting in 50% more seaweed growth. The number of macroalgal species increased with the rate of ammonium loading into tidepools as slow-growing species tolerant of low nitrogen availability were supplemented by fast-growing species with higher nitrogen requirements. Thus, especially in high-intertidal pools, which are isolated from oceanic nitrate inputs for nearly 80% of the time, invertebrates are important contributors to the nitrogen budgets of seaweeds. This study highlights the role of local-scale nutrient regeneration as a potential determinant of tidepool community structure and suggests that nutrient excretion by filter-feeding invertebrates may influence the structure and dynamics of rocky intertidal communities.  相似文献
