Researchers commonly use long-term average production inequalities to characterize cross-cultural patterns in foraging divisions
of labor, but little is known about how the strategies of individuals shape such inequalities. Here, we explore the factors
that lead to daily variation in how much men produce relative to women among Martu, contemporary foragers of the Western Desert
of Australia. We analyze variation in foraging decisions on temporary foraging camps and find that the percentage of total
camp production provided by each gender varies primarily as a function of men’s average bout successes with large, mobile
prey. When men target large prey, either their success leads to a large proportional contribution to the daily harvest, or
their failure results in no contribution. When both men and women target small reliable prey, production inequalities by gender
are minimized. These results suggest that production inequalities among Martu emerge from stochastic variation in men’s foraging
success on large prey measured against the backdrop of women’s consistent production of small, low-variance resources.

An Ethnoarchaeological Study of Mobility, Architectural Investment, and Food Sharing among Madagascar's Mikea
Ethnoarchaeology is a field of study that aims to provide the information needed to draw reliable behavioral inferences from archaeological data. In this study, data from four settlement types (permanent villages, forest hamlets, seasonal hamlets, and foraging camps) of a forager–farmer population in southwestern Madagascar are examined from an archaeological perspective. Doing so shows that house size, house post diameter variability, outdoor workspace, trash disposal, and feature diversity jointly sort out settlements of different lengths of occupation. However, the relationship between mobility and material culture is not simply a product of the length of stay; it is also affected by differences in the social environments of settlements of different occupational lengths. Using the behavioral ecology of food sharing, we show that certain architectural changes that ensure privacy are expected to occur as settlements become larger and more permanent. These observations from Madagascar should be applicable to other areas.

Dental, cranial and body size data are reviewed for European Upper Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic males and females. Over these three periods there is a substantial decrease in the level of sexual dimorphism. From separate analysis of trends occurring between males and females, it is shown that the major cause for this decrease in sexual dimorphism is gracilization of the males between the Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic. Reduction in males is related to shifting technological patterns associated with hunting and changes in the types of animals hunted. Further reduction in sexual dimorphism between the Mesolithic and Neolithic and from the Neolithic to modern European populations is shown to be more closely tied to changes occurring among females. Analysis of changing patterns of sexual dimorphism in Late Pleistocene and Holocene populations of Europe suggests an interrelationship between cultural and biological evolution.

Nutritional provisioning is a critical component of life history strategies, and of particular interest in social insect colonies
because of the role that division of labor plays in resource allocation. To explore the mechanisms that underlie colony nutritional
strategies, I examined three populations of the ant Pheidole morrisi across a gradient of overwinter food scarcity over two seasons. P. morrisi colonies were found to employ amixed strategy of fat storage with regard to a longer overwinter period: members of both worker
castes increase their percent-fat in a graded manner, while the proportion of a specialized subcaste of majors known as “repletes”,
also increased within the colony. Geographic variation in other colony traits such as mean colony size, mean worker size,
and minor/major caste ratio were also found, although not always in a manner clearly relating to fat storage. These results
indicate that colony demography responds to seasonal fluctuations in food availability through behavioral alterations (increased
fat stores and recruitment of replete workers) rather than physical alterations (changes in lean body sizes or caste ratio).
The findings illustrate the dynamic role division of labor plays in the success of insect colonies confronting environmental
variability.

Children may be viewed as public goods whereby both parents receive equal genetic benefits yet one parent often invests more
heavily than the other. We introduce a microeconomic framework for understanding household investment decisions to address
questions concerning conflicts of interest over types and amount of work effort among married men and women. Although gains
and costs of marriage may not be spread equally among marriage partners, marriage is still a favorable, efficient outcome
under a wide range of conditions. This bioeconomic framework subsumes both cooperative and conflictive views on the sexual
division of labor. We test hypotheses concerning marriage markets, assortative mating, and men’s labor motivations among Tsimane
forager-horticulturalists of Bolivia and find that: (1) men and women both value work effort in marital partners, (2) marital
labor contributions are complementary, (3) work effort is correlated between spouses, (4) total production is correlated with
total reproduction, and (5) better hunters have higher fitness gains within marital unions.

Summary We examined division of labor and colony demography in the antPonera pennsylvannica. Observation of three colonies with individually marked workers revealed a high degree of interindividual behavioral variation and a rough but consistent division of labor between brood tenders and foragers. This division was present both in colonies consisting entirely of workers produced in the previous summer and in colonies containing freshly eclosed ants. Two colonies showed typical age-based polyethism, with young ants focusing on brood care and overwintered ants on foraging. No such age basis was detected in the third colony. This difference may relate to variability in brood production schedules. Colonies showing temporal polyethism had two peaks of brood production and thus had relatively large brood populations when the first young workers eclosed, while the third colony had only one peak and little brood for the young workers to tend. Even if young ants have a lower threshold for brood care, it may have been concealed in the latter situation. Demographic data indicate that natural colonies produce one brood per year and that workers typically eclose into colonies with relatively low brood care demands. This suggests that overwintered workers do most of a colony's work and that the division of labor among overwintered ants is the more important one under natural conditions. The basis of this division is as yet unknown. These results also suggest that small colony size, univoltine brood schedule and a close association between foraging and brood care do not preclude division of labor among specialized castes, as has been suggested for another ponerine species (Traniello 1978).

When it comes to subsistence, men and women in almost all societies do it differently. One long-standing explanation for this sexual division of labor is that men and women pair up to provision offspring and specialize in subsistence activities in order to maximize household productivity. This model of cooperative parental provisioning has generally been supported by the proposal that both male and female reproductive success is maximized by provisioning current offspring rather than deserting them in order to seek new mating opportunities. But recent analyses of bird behavior have often failed to support this premise. We now know that among many species conflicting reproductive strategies between males and females often result in less than optimal compromises with regard to mating and parenting. This new focus on the role of sexual selection in creating compromise and conflict between the sexes has the potential to illuminate many puzzling aspects of human partnerships between men and women. To demonstrate its potential, I compare the explanatory power of a cooperative provisioning model of sex difference in human foraging and food sharing with a model incorporating conflicting reproductive goals.

Debate over how people behave in an open access environment is ongoing in both the social sciences and natural resource management circles. Central to this debate is the question of driving forces behind decisions and behavior toward natural resources within a given area. Using data from an artisanal shrimping community in Ecuador, I demonstrate that behavior in an open access environment, measured in terms of fishing effort, is responsive to both economic and noneconomic factors, the nature of which depends on the temporal scale at which behavior is being measured—hourly, daily, or amount of gear over time. These findings suggest that much of the observed variation between previous studies and corresponding data sets may be a methodological artifact, and the ensuing debates ultimately a result of different methodologies and scales of analyses.

Foraging responses ofFormica truncorum (Hymenoptera; Formicidae); exploiting stable vs spatially and temporally variable resources

Summary Social organization allows a division of labor between reproduction and foraging, as well as a task allocation among foraging individuals. Therefore, a colony simultaneously exploiting various resources can use different ways of getting them. This work analyzes wood ant foraging tactics both at the collective and the individual level. The main issues are: (1) How does a wood ant colony respond to stable vs temporally and spatially variable resources in terms of worker force allocation? (2) How is retrieval of ephemeral but rich resources effected at the individual level? The results show a correspondence between resource stability and behavior. Ants visited stable resources continually and recruited to ephemeral ones. They also visited empty food sites at a low frequency suggesting territoriality and constant scanning. The results suggest that recruitment may involve defence of the resource, since only a small fraction of all the workers available carry the food home. Additional ants arriving at the resource are recruited from inside the nest, not by reallocating outdoor workers. The foragers also form two separate groups, one site-persistent and another site-flexible. These two forager groups may reflect specialization on two different kinds of diet: honeydew or insect prey (spatially and temporally stable vs unstable resources, respectively).Formica truncorum is thus an example of how sociality allows the use of two different foraging strategies simultaneously: one that is based on recruitment to ephemeral resources and another that is based on search persistance and memory.

Insect societies are characterized by a relatively sophisticated division of labor; they form tightly knit groups that must effectively exclude non‐members from the colony. However, the Neotropical predatory ant Ectatomma tuberculatum can harbor several specific myrmecophiles and, in particular, various eucharitid parasitoid wasp species. Adult wasps eclose in the host nests and are removed by worker ants without harm. Previous observations suggest that only a few workers perform this task. To test this hypothesis, we introduced different types of intruders, live and dead, pentane‐washed broad‐nosed grain weevil individuals (Caulophilus oryzae) and dead, pentane‐washed eucharitids (Dilocantha lachaudii), into laboratory colonies containing individually marked workers. We recorded all encounters and behaviors until the intruders were removed. Certain workers removed intruders more frequently than expected by chance. The number of encounters with an intruder was positively correlated with the number of removals performed by the workers. For each nest, a small group of workers was identified as specialized in intruder removal. A subset of very committed workers in the specialists group that performed up to 57% of removals qualified as hyperspecialists or elite workers. The behavioral sequences differed based on the type and condition of the intruder: the sequence was more complex and included numerous aggressive behaviors (mandibular strikes and attempts at stinging) when workers encountered a live weevil. In contrast, the behavioral sequences with dead, pentane‐washed insects were characterized by numerous detections through contact that did not lead to rejection and by the intruders simply being seized and removed from the nest. Overall, the data show that the ants discriminated between live and pentane‐washed intruders and adjusted their behavior accordingly. This is the first demonstration in ants of both behavioral specialization and hyperspecialization in intruder removal.

Testosterone (T) facilitates male investment in reproduction in part through its anabolic effects on skeletal muscle. Traits like muscle and strength are energetically costly but are believed to enhance competitive ability in humans and other mammals. However, there are limited data on relationships between T and somatic outcomes in lean, non‐western populations. We evaluate relationships between waking and pre‐bed salivary T and adiposity, fat‐free mass (FFM), arm muscle area (AMA), and grip strength (GS) in a large, population‐based birth cohort of young adult Filipino males (20.8–22.6 years, n = 872). Data were collected as part of the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey. Neither waking nor evening T predicted FFM, AMA, or GS. However, there were borderline or significant interactions between T and basketball playing (the most common team sport) and weight lifting as predictors of outcomes: higher waking T predicted higher FFM (activity × T interaction P < 0.01), AMA (interaction P < 0.1), and GS (interaction P < 0.02) among frequent basketball players, and GS (interaction P < 0.09) among the smaller sample of weight lifters. In contrast to clinical studies, but consistent with findings in several subsistence‐level populations, T was positively related to adiposity in these lean young males, suggesting that energy status might regulate circulating T. Our findings support a role of the prewaking rise in T as a determinant of energetic allocation to lean mass and strength in the context of repeated muscular use and support the hypothesized role of T as a mediator of investment in costly somatic traits in human males. Anthropologists have frequently proposed that sexual division of labor is produced by childcare constraints on women's subsistence work. We present data on the forest activities of Ache women that show that differences in parental investment partially account for variation in food acquisition among individual women. Data also suggest that childcare constraints are important in understanding the sexual division of labor.
