The aim of the work was to investigate the pattern of chemoreceptor sensilla in adults and fifth stage nymphs of Rhodnius prolixus, R. neglectus, Triatoma infestans and T. sordida in order to study differences and similarities between genera and species. Three types of sensilla were analyzed by light microscopy: thin-walled trichoidea, thick-walled trichoidea and basiconica. The number of sensilla of each three types were counted. The length of the antennal segments were also used as a variable for the analysis. The statistical analysis showed that the number of these antennal chemoreceptors had significant differences between species and between adults and nymphs of each species. Discriminant analysis separates incompletely the fifth stage nymphs of the four species and showed similarity between them. Discriminant analysis performed with 12 variables of the antennae, allowed a complete separation of the adults of the four species.  相似文献

Despite its potential value in phylogenetic and ecological studies, the morphology of antennal sensilla has rarely been compared quantitatively within the Apoidea. Here, through a scanning electron microscopy analysis, we provide an inventory of different types of antennal sensilla and compare their morphology across 10 species of predatory wasps (Crabronidae: Philanthinae) including species that hunt exclusively either on beetles or on bees to feed their larvae. A sensilla-free area was found on the apical flagellomer of all but two species, and its shape and size appear to be useful for separating Philanthini from Cercerini within the subfamily. A total of eight types of sensilla (sensilla placoidea, sensilla basiconica, two types of pit organs, sensilla coelocapitula and three types of sensilla trichoidea) were found in all species, and an additional rarer type (grooved peg sensilla) was found only in three bee-hunting species and for first time in the genus Cerceris. Certain morphological features confirmed the separation of the apoid wasps from the rest of the Apoidea (i.e., bees). A cluster analysis based on the sizes of the different types of sensilla suggested that, overall, sensilla morphology is not a useful taxonomic tool, and thus, other factors likely determine interspecific variability. One candidate factor is the prey type, given some differences in the presence, density, size and distribution of certain types of olfactory sensilla between beetle-hunters and bee-hunters. This hypothesis needs to be further tested quantitatively using a larger species set, more individuals per species, additional sensilla features, and a correction for phylogeny.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy was used to elucidate the morphology and sequential movement of thrips feeding structures in the 2 species, Frankliniella occidentalis and F. schultzei, (Thysanoptera : Thripidae). The mouthcone consists of paired paraglossae, and fringed labral pad, a single, apically fused mandible and a pair of interlocking maxillae. The maxillae are open apically and form a feeding tube. Ten pairs of sensory pegs of 3 distinct morphological types (sensilla basiconica with a cuticular collar, sensilla basiconica without a cuticular collar, and sensilla trichoidea) were found on the paraglossae. The possible function of these sensory structures in host finding and choice are discussed. No structure for rasping the leaf's surface was found on the mouthcone or the ventral surface of the insect. Live specimens were observed feeding through Parafilm on artificial media (sucrose solution) and lettuce leaf tissue. These observations support earlier findings that thrips feed by piercing leaf cells with the mandible and ingesting cell contents through the feeding tube formed by the maxillary stylets. Based on these findings, we suggest that thrips be classified as piercing-sucking rather than rasping-sucking insects.  相似文献

Considering that sensilla constitute important functional elements of sensory systems in insects, the aim of this study was to determine the type and distribution of sensilla in the antennae of Hylamorpha elegans Burmeister examined by scanning electron microscopy. Hylamorpha elegans antennae are lamellate and consist of the scape, pedicel, and flagellum. The antennal club of this beetle consists of three terminal plates: proximal, middle, and distal lamellae. Four types of sensilla were observed in the lamellae from both sexes: sensilla trichoidea, chaetica, coeloconica, and placodea. Antennal length was larger in males than in females, and significant sexual variation in the number of sensilla placodea and sensilla coeloconica was observed.  相似文献

The number and distribution of chemosensilla located on different organs of Busseola fusca (Fuller) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) males and females are described based on observations using scanning electron microscopy, selective staining with silver nitrate, and gustatory electrophysiological recording. The antennae and the fifth tarsomere of the prothoracic legs of both sexes bear chemosensilla: uniporous chaetica and multiporous trichoidea sensilla. However, there is a sexual dimorphism in the number and size of sensilla on these organs. The distal part of the ovipositor has uniporous gustatory chemosensilla of the chaetica type. The involvement of these sensilla in oviposition site selection by B. fusca is discussed.  相似文献

The sensilla located on the antennae and maxillary and labial palps of the larvae of 64 beetle species from 22 families were studied using electron microscopy. The larvae of beetles living in different habitats and having different trophic specializations possess a uniform structure of the sensory organs. They are composed of two groups of sensilla on the apical and subapical segments of the antennae, one apical group of sensilla on both maxillary and labial palps, and one or several digitiform sensilla on the lateral surface of the maxillary and, occasionally, labial palp. The external morphology of the sensory organs is adaptive and represents modifications of the initial type. Band-shaped sensilla or placoid sensilla, clearly different from the initial sensory organs, appear in some taxa as rare exceptions, while other groups display either partial reduction of the receptor organs (Gyrinidae) or reduction of the cuticular parts of the sensilla (Cantharidae).  相似文献

Efficacy of two tropical plant extracts for the control of mosquitoes   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
The larvicidal activity of seed and leaf extracts of Calophyllum inophyllum and leaf extract of Rhinacanthus nasutus on the juveniles of Culex quinquefasciatus , Anopheles stephensi and Aedes aegypti was determined. Ethyl acetate (EA) soluble fractions of C. inophyllum and petroleum ether (PE) fraction of R. nasutus extracts showed very high larvicidal activity. Irrespective of the species of the mosquitoes tested, at concentrations ranging from 3.91 to 9.39 ppm, 9.04 to 35.49 ppm and 13.21 to 28.92 ppm of the active fractions of seed and leaf extracts of C. inophyllum and the leaf extract of R. nasutus , respectively, killed 50% of the treated larvae. The fractions also interfered with adult emergence. Exposure of the mosquitoes at any stage of their larval development to less than 0.86, 5.49 and 6.81 ppm of the active fractions of seed and leaf extracts of C. inophyllum and the leaf extract of R. nasutus , respectively, inhibited 50% of the treated larvae from emerging as adults. Experiments under laboratory and semi-field conditions showed that the activity of the extracts persisted for up to 10 days.  相似文献

In order to determine if habitat similarity is correlated with a similarity of sensilla pattern, we analyzed six species of Triatominae present in two biogeographic regions of Brazil: the "caatinga" and the "cerrado". In broad terms Triatoma infestans (cerrado) and T. brasiliensis (caatinga) are found in human domiciles, T. sordida (cerrado) and T. pseudomaculata (caatinga) colonize peridomestic habitats, and Rhodnius neglectus (cerrado) and R. nasutus (caatinga) inhabit palm tree crowns. The number and distribution of four sensilla types (bristles, thin and thick walled trichoidea, and basiconica) were compared in these species. Sexual dimorphism of sensilla patterns was noted in T. sordida, T. brasiliensis and T. pseudomaculata. A principal component analysis showed three main groups: (i) species that live in the palms, (ii) domiciliated species and (iii) those living in the peridomestic habitat. T. infestans almost exclusively domestic, was placed at the centre of the canonical map and some individuals of other species overlapped there. These results support the idea that the patterns of antennal sensilla are sensitive indicators of adaptive process in Triatominae. We propose that those species that inhabit less stable habitats possess more types of sensilla on the pedicel, and higher number of antennal sensilla.  相似文献

Insecticidal activity of eight plants collected from Burkina Faso was studied using mosquito (Ochlerotatus triseriatus), Helicoverpa zea and Heliothis virescens larvae and adult white fly (Bemisia tabaci). The n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of Pseudocedrela kotschyi, Strophantus hispidus, Securidaca longepedunculata, Sapium grahamii, Swartzia madagascariensis, Cassia nigricans, Jatropha curcas and Datura innoxia were used in this study. Extracts were tested at 250 microg/mL concentration. All three extracts of C. nigricans, J. curcas (skin and seeds) and D. innoxia exhibited 100% mortality on fourth instar mosquito (O. triseriatus) larvae. In addition, the n-hexane and ethyl acetate extracts of S. hispidus, S. longepedunculata, S. grahamii showed 100% mortality. The ethyl acetate extract of S. madagascariensis was the most active on adult white fly and exhibited 80% mortality. Extracts of all other plants exhibited 30-50% mortality on B. tabaci. In the antifeedant assays against H. zea and H. virescens, the MeOH extracts of C. nigricans, S. madagascarensis and S. hispidus were more effective against H. zea as indicated by 74% larval weight reduction as compared to the control. Since C. nigricans is commonly used in West Africa to protect grain storage from insects, we have characterized the insecticidal components present in its extract. Bioassay directed isolation of C. nigricans leaf extract yielded anthraquinones emodin, citreorosein, and emodic acid and a flavonoid, luteolin. Emodin, the most abundant and active anthraquinone in C. nigricans showed approximately 85% mortality on mosquito larvae Anopheles gambiaea and adult B. tabaci at 50 and 25 microg/mL, respectively, in 24 h. These results suggest that the extract of C. nigricans has the potential to be used as an organic approach to manage some of the agricultural pests.  相似文献

Abstract. The apex of the larval antenna of the crane fly Nephrotoma suturalis has 6 cuticular sensilla that stained intensely black with silver nitrate, which indicates their porosity. The large sensory cone is innervated by 14 neurons and the 3 small, smooth surfaced, conical pegs have 4 neurons each. The small and large cylindrical sensilla with their smooth walls and pleated apices are innervated by 4 and 6 nerve cells, respectively. The 15 sensilla on the apex of the maxillary palp are all stained by silver nitrate. These sensilla are of five types: 7 type A sensilla with a smooth surface, a distinct apical pore, and 3 or 4 neurons; 2 type B sensilla with a smooth surface, many pores, and 5 neurons; 1 type C sensillum with a grooved surface, a large apical pore, smaller pores in the grooves, and 6 neurons; 3 type D sensilla with a smooth surface, a grooved apex that is elongated into a projection, and 4 neurons; 2 type E sensilla with many pores covering the surface, leaf-like appearance, and 4 neurons. The number and types of sensilla are similar to those in other nematocerous larvae, but in the many different forms of sensilla and the structure of the sensory cone, these tipulid larvae differ greatly from other larvae of lower Diptera.  相似文献

Sensory organs on the antennae of the horseflies Hybomitra bimaculata Macq. and Tabanus bovinus Loew are represented by the same morphological types of sensilla. Never differences in the topographical distribution of the sensilla on antennae have been also found, which can be explained by the similarity of ecological and behavioural adaptations of these insects. First and second antennal segments are found to be supplied with tactile hairs and proprioceptors. Other antennal segments bear sensory organs of several morphological types. Short thin olfactory hairs are most numerous among them. They are present on all segments of the antennal flagellum and belong to two morphological types different by the hair length. In the upper parts of the antennal segments from third to seventh several sensilla trichoidea are present, which probably serve as tactile and taste receptors.  相似文献

Olfactory responses of Dasineura tetensi (Rubs) (Diptera; Cecidomyiidae) to leaf volatiles of blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum) were tested in a 4-way olfactometer. Newly emerged virgin females showed no response to the leaf volatiles emitted from a blackcurrant shoot. Newly emerged males (which are known to respond to a pheromone released by the female) also showed no response to the leaf volatiles. Two hours after mating females responded positively, indicating that leaf volatiles may play a role in host plant finding. Scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy of the antennae of D. tetensi showed that males and females share five sensillum types; sensilla chaetica (mechanoreceptors), sensilla trichodea, sensilla basiconica, uniporous peg sensilla and circumfila (chemoreceptors). The sensilla chaetica and sensilla trichodea resemble those found on other insects. Sensilla basiconica were found on all antennal subsegments except the tip. These are multiporous receptors with five unbranched dendrites filling the lumen. Small peg sensilla located on the tips of both male and female antennae may function as contact-chemoreceptors. The circumfila, which are a unique type of sensilla found only on cecidomyiid antennae, form loops around each of the antennal subsegments, being attached to the surface by a series of stalks. TEM revealed that each stalk consisted of one sensillum containing a single highly branched dendrite. The distal regions of the walls of each sensillum are fused together to form the circumfila. Circumfila have multiporous walls and a lumen filled with multiple branches of dendrites. Their structure suggests that they are important olfactory receptors in both the male and female.  相似文献

Abstract. Behavioural events during host selection by ovipositing monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus (L.), Danainae, Nymphalidae) include tapping the leaf surface with fore-tarsi and touching this surface with mid-tarsi (‘drumming’) and antennae. Flavonoids identified from host plant extracts are known to stimulate oviposition. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the presence of contact-chemoreceptor sensilla on all appendages that contact the leaf surface. This electrophysiological study was conducted to identify the contact chemoreceptors that are sensitive to the known oviposition stimuli and are therefore probably involved in host recognition. Receptor cells of conspicuous sensilla grouped in clusters on fore-tarsi of females were sensitive to the behaviourally active butanol fraction of host plant (Asclepias curassavica) extract. However, these receptors generally had low sensitivity to three oviposition-stimulating flavonoids identified from this fraction, but they were also sensitive to the butanol fraction of a non-host (Brassica oleracea). Chemoreceptors in sensilla of the tarsomers 2–4 of the mid-legs also responded to the behaviourally active fraction of host plant extract and showed some sensitivity to two of the flavonoids that stimulate oviposition. Similar results were obtained from receptor cells in sensilla on the tip of the antennae. Most of these sensilla had cells responding to the butanol fraction of A. curassavica extract but only 25% of them were also sensitive to one of the behaviourally active flavonoids. These electrophysiological results, in combination with behavioural observations, suggest that host selection in monarch butterflies relies on a complex pattern of peripheral sensory information from several types of tarsal and antennal contact chemoreceptors.

The antennal sensilla of alate Myzus persicae were mapped using transmission electron microscopy and the ultrastructure of sensilla trichoidea, coeloconica, and placoidea are described. Trichoid sensilla, located on the tip of the antennae, are innervated by 2–4 neurons, with some outer dendrites reaching the distal end of the hair. Coeloconic sensilla in primary rhinaria are of two morphological types, both equipped with two dendrites. Dendrites of Type II coeloconic sensilla are enveloped in the dendrite sheath, containing the sensillum lymph. In sensilla coeloconica of Type I, instead, dendrites are enclosed by an electron opaque solid cuticle, with no space left for the sensillum lymph. The ultrastructure of big placoid sensillum reveals the presence of three groups of neurons, with 2–3 dendrites in each neuron group, while both small placoid sensilla are equipped with a single group of neurons, consisting of three dendrites. Both large and small placoid sensilla bear multiple pores on the outer cuticle. The function of these sensilla is also discussed. J. The allocation, external morphology, and ultrastructure of various types of sensilla on the antennae have been studied in the larvae of the Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say) using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. It has been found that the larval antenna bears 11 sensilla of four morphological types: trichoid (five), basiconic (four), styloconic (one), and antennal cone (one). It has been shown that the sensilla are innervated by 2?C7 receptor cells: trichoid, by 2?C4 receptor cells; basiconic, by 4?C7 receptor cells; and styloconic, by 6 receptor cells. Judging by the specifics of their ultrastructural organization, the function of these sensilla is gustatory. The antennal cone is innervated by two receptor cells, and its function is olfactory.  相似文献

The herbivory activity of the bordered patch larvae (Chlosyne lacinia, Lepidoptera) on leaves of a Brazilian population of Tithonia diversifolia and the antifeedant potential of its leaf rinse extract were investigated. The caterpillars fed only on the adaxial face, where the density of glandular trichomes is very low, and avoided the abaxial face, which contains high levels of trichomes. Deterrent activity against the larvae was observed in leaf discs treated with leaf rinse extract at concentrations of 1-5% of fresh leaf weight. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis indicated that sesquiterpene lactones are the main constituents of the glandular trichomes. Dichloromethane rinse extracts of the leaves and inflorescences were chemically investigated, and 16 compounds were isolated and identified: 14 sesquiterpene lactones, a flavonoid and a diterpenoid. In this study, five sesquiterpene lactones are described for the first time in the genus, including two lactones, one of which has an unusual seco-guaianolide skeleton. Our findings indicate that the caterpillars avoid the sesquiterpene-lactone-rich glandular trichomes, and provide evidence for the antifeedant activity of the dichloromethane leaf rinse extract. In addition, a study of the seasonal variation of the main constituents from the leaf surface throughout a year demonstrated that a very low qualitative but a very high quantitative variation occurs. The highest level of the main metabolite tagitinin C was observed between September and October and the lowest was from March to June, the later corresponding to the period of highest infestation by the larvae.  相似文献

The effects of six terpenoids and two terpenoid containing extracts of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.) on oviposition by the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L., Yponomeutidae: Lepidoptera) were tested. Two drimane terpenoids, the sesquiterpenoid polygodial and the neem extract Margosan-O exerted significant inhibitory effects at the dosages tested. Ablation experiments showed that both antennae and fore-tarsi contributed to mediation of the inhibition by a drimane. Location of chemosensilla on prothoracic tarsi and ovipositor was examined by scanning electronmicroscopy. Electrophysiological recordings from ovipositor and tarsal taste sensilla showed that distilled water produced distinct responses from one neuron. In tarsal sensilla, ethanol and drimane solutions produced responses from two neurons, one of which might be the water cell that fired at a reduced rate. A drimane significantly decreased the responses of tarsal chemoreceptors to a cabbage leaf extract, which is a possible sensory mechanism leading to behavioural avoidance of this compound.  相似文献
