In Dutch coastal dunes the relation was studied between the composition of the vegetation on the banks of pools and the nutrients supplied by the groundwater. Areas infiltrated with eutrophic river water were compared with non-affected areas. The floristic composition was interpreted according to classification systems of ruderal, nitrophilous tall hemicryptophytes and the conservation parameters richness and rarity. Of the three main macro-nutrients (orthophosphate, nitrate and potassium), the orthophosphate load shows the highest correlation with the vegetation variables. It is suggested that a reduction of orthophosphate during pre-purification of the infiltration water would reduce the dominance of the ruderals to the extent that the original dune slack species could return locally.Nomenclature of species follows Arnolds & Van der Meijden (1975).We thank G. The vegetation succession on the dunes near Oostvoorne, The Netherlands has been followed by means of a novel combination of repeated large-scale vegetation mapping and air photograph interpretation. Vegetation units have been discerned on the formation level because these could be distinguished fairly easily on the photographs and because the rates of change are appropriate to the time interval chosen. Nineteen formations were distinguished. Five 1:6250 maps were constructed, reflecting the formation pattern in 1934, 1943, 1959, 1972 and 1980. An overlay with 2736 grid points at 25 m field distance was used to quantify changes in the formation pattern.The results suggest a pronounced multiple pathway succession with nevertheless three principal trajectories of succession from pioneer to woodland vegetation. The outer dunes, which have originated since 1910, are distinct in successional characteristics from the inner dunes, which already existed but were released from heavy grazing pressure in 1910. The rate of change in the outer dunes was high in the beginning and is slowly decreasing eversince. In the inner dunes it went the other way around. Through visual extrapolation the likely formation patterns in 1910 and in 2000 were estimated.Transition frequencies proved highly variable for most formations. Moreover, strong spatial dependence was found. Limitations in the use of Markov models in cases of long-term succession in heterogeneous environments are discussed.Nomenclature follows the same sources as in van der Maarel et al. Question

What are the composition and spatial patterns of native woody plant communities in the southern Great Chaco and Espinal?

Location

Córdoba Province, central Argentina, an area of ca. 161,000 km2.

Methods

We collected 351 geo‐referenced relevés representative of the geographic, topographic and ecological variation of the Chaco and Espinal woody vegetation in central Argentina. The relevés were classified into vegetation types using the hierarchical ISOPAM method. Forest and shrubland types were described on the basis of diagnostic species occurrences and their distribution in relation to environmental factors. A map of the actual vegetation derived from remote‐sensed images (Landsat) and field data was used to describe the current distribution and abundance of the different vegetation types.

Results

The classification of the 351 plots × 837 species matrix revealed two major clusters comprising seven woody vegetation types corresponding to Chaco lowland and mountain forests and shrublands, Espinal forests and edaphic vegetation. The most important gradients in woody vegetation types are related to elevation, temperature and rainfall variables.

Conclusions

Subtropical seasonally dry woody plant communities from the southern extreme of the Great Chaco and Espinal forests were described for the first time based on complete floristic data. Our results show that lowland Chaco native forests, as well as replacement communities, are still present in its southern distribution range and are well distinguishable from other vegetation types such as the Espinal and mountain forests. Overall, extensive Espinal forests have almost disappeared while Chaco vegetation is highly fragmented and degraded.

Summary The leu-3/-IPM (-isopropylmalate) regulatory system, previously shown to control several genes of leucine, isoleucine, valine, and histidine biosynthesis, appears likely to be involved also in the regulation of overall RNA and protein synthesis in Neurospora. Upon addition of -IPM the synthesis of all major species of stable RNA was found to be transiently inhibited by approximately 50%. A similar reduction was observed in overall protein synthesis. The inhibition was dependent in both cases on a functional leu-3 gene product, in conformance with previously established patterns of -IPM dependent gene regulation. The overt resemblance of the phenomenon described here to the stringent response of bacteria is noted but neither the mechanism of inhibition nor the precise role of -IPM in the process has been established.  相似文献

In 1971 the Grevelingen estuary was embanked. In the newly created lake Grevelingen the tidal movements stopped and a few thousand ha of sandflats fell permanently dry. Ca 40% of the surface of those flats was immediately afterwards sown with rye and other grasses to prevent wind erosion. This fixation of a rather uniform environment resulted in a monotonous vegetation cover. Grazing with domestic animals is now applied as management practice to create more environmental variation and thereby a higher species diversity.The present study gives the results of eleven years of comparing vegetation development under various management practices, including non-interference in the spontaneous and sown vegetation. Sequential vegetation mapping, repeated inventories of selected areas and studies in permannent plots are the main techniques used.On the unsown shore zones interesting vegetation types are developing where species diversity is higher than in the sown areas. In the shore zones not only a faster succession occurred compared with the sown areas, but also a shifting of environmental gradients, e.g. in moisture and salinity conditions, encouraged vegetation changes. After 10 yr grazed areas had a higher number of species than ungrazed equivalent areas. The results also indicated that grazing slows down the establishment of (tall) woody species and shrub development.Nomenclature of angiosperms and syntaxa follows Heukels & van Ooststroom (1977) and Westhoff & den Held (1975), respectively.The authors are indebted to Dr W. Perennial species invading the early stages of primary successions face constant, and often rapid, change in their biotic and abiotic environment. The relative abilities of different species to adapt to this change is reflected in the zonation patterns which characterize coastal vegetation. Variation in those species with wide ecological amplitudes, particularly in populations near the boundary of the realized niche, is likely to be particularly revealing.The pattern of heritable variation in Puccinellia maritima on salt marshes indicates directional selection for traits increasing plant vigour and competitive ability; presumably the effect of increasing plant density. Adaptation is by both genetic differentiation and phenotypic flexibility, the former being evident in adjacent grazed and ungrazed marshes and the latter in a mosaic of tall and short vegetation types. By contrast variation in Ammophila arenaria on dunes exhibits high levels of phenotypic flexibility, growth in a range of environments indicating that plants from fore-dune populations are higher responders than those from mature dunes.Among the implications of these results, and by comparison with other species, is the fact that, ironically, niche expansion for some salt marsh perennials may require the evolution of an annual strategy, and that a Darwinian selection model may help to explain variation in Ammophila's apparent vigour in dunes of different age.Nomenclature follows Tutin et al.: Flora Europaea (1964–1980).I am grateful to several colleagues and students, past and present, who have helped with the studies of Puccinellia and Ammophila and I am particularly indebted in this respect to Richard Scott.  相似文献

We investigated the role of seed predation by rodents in the recruitment of the fleshy-fruited trees Taxus baccata, Ilex aquifolium and Crataegus monogyna in temperate secondary forests in NW Spain. We measured the densities of dispersed seeds, early emerged seedlings, established recruits and adults, at four sites over a period of 2 years. Seed predation among species was compared by seed removal experiments and analysis of rodent larder-hoards. The three species differed markedly in local regeneration patterns. The rank order in the seed rain following decreasing seed density was Ilex, Taxus and Crataegus. However, Crataegus established 3.3 times more seedlings than Taxus. For all species, there was a positive linear relationship between the density of emerged seedlings and seed density, suggesting that recruitment was seed- rather than microsite-limited. A consistent pattern of seed selection among species was exerted by rodents, which preferred Taxus and, secondarily, Ilex seeds to Crataegus seeds. Predation ranking was the inverse of that of seed protection against predators, measured as the mass of woody coat per mass unit of the edible fraction. Recruitment potential, evaluated as the ratio of seedlings to seeds, was negatively related to seed predation, with the rank order Crataegus > Ilex > Taxus. The selective early recruitment limitation exerted by predation may have a demographic effect in the long term, as judged by the positive relationship between early seedling emergence and the density of established recruits. By modulating the pre-emptive competition for seed safe sites, rodents may preclude the progressive exclusion of species that produce low numbers of seeds (i.e. Crataegus) by those dominant in seed number (i.e. Ilex, Taxus), or at least foster the evenness for site occupation among seedlings of different species.  相似文献

Summary Information regarding the relative levels of salt tolerance between cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) is lacking. The objectives of this study were to 1) develop a simple, quick and sensitive method of screening turfgrass species for NaCl tolerance and 2) to compare the relative salt tolerance of five cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass (Ram I, Adelphi, Baron, Bensun, and Nassau) to other known salt tolerant turfgrass species such as alkalaigrass (Puccinellia distans (L.) Parl. cv. Fults) and two cultivars of red fescue (Festuca rubra L. Dawson, and Checker).Alkalaigrass and both cultivars of red fescue retained a high level of salt tolerance compared to the Kentucky bluegrass cultivars. Significant variability in salt tolerance was apparent among the Kentucky bluegrass cultivars with Adelphi and Ram I exhibiting the best overall tolerance.  相似文献

Contrasted and periodic vegetation patterns are observed throughout thesemi-arid tropics. The relation between individual species and theoverall pattern has been investigated from a study site in NorthWest Burkina Faso (West Africa), which displayed periodic woody patterns withvarying levels of contrast and isotropy. The woody vegetation was described fromtwo field plots (320 by 320 ), within which woodyindividuals were either mapped or counted (in quadrats of 10 by10 ). A banded pattern of high intensity (tiger bush on hardsandstone, plot PTG) was compared with a less precise pattern on more favourableedaphic conditions (plot PSP). The periodic nature of the vegetation under studywas directly addressed by interpreting spatial auto- and cross-covariancefunctions through spectra of spatial frequencies (spectral analysis). Theoverall pattern of vegetation was analysed from digitised aerial photographs,while distributions of individual species were characterised from field data. Inboth plots, the densest species (Combretum micranthum G.Don), though only dominant in PTG, had a spatial distribution that closelymatched the overall pattern. Pterocarpus lucens Lepr wasco-dominant in both plots although fairly independent on the periodic pattern.Several species displayed a positive link with the periodic pattern that wasquite loose in PSP and tighter in PTG. This tighter link was concomitant withlower densities for most species. Indeed, only C.micranthum clearly benefited from the high intensity pattern with adensity seven times higher in PTG than in PSP. Consequently, species richnessand diversity were lower in PTG. A single species proved hence of overwhelmingimportance in accounting for the periodic pattern and its persistence throughtime. Spatial distributions of other species pointed rather towardsindividualistic responses to the opportunity/constraint provided by theperiodic pattern in presence of different levels of edaphic and climatic stress.  相似文献

In southeastern Arizona, Prosopis juliflora (Swartz) DC. and Quercus emoryi Torr. are the dominant woody species at grassland/woodland boundaries. The stability of the grassland/woodland boundary in this region has been questioned, although there is no direct evidence to confirm that woodland is encroaching into grassland or vice versa. We used stable carbon isotope analysis of soil organic matter to investigate the direction and magnitude of vegetation change along this ecotone. 13C values of soil organic matter and roots along the ecotone indicated that both dominant woody species (C3) are recent components of former grasslands (C4), consistent with other reports of recent increases in woody plant abundance in grasslands and savannas throughout the world. Data on root biomass and soil organic matter suggest that this increase in woody plant abundance in grasslands and savannas may increase carbon storage in these ecosystems, with implications for the global carbon cycle.  相似文献

Lizard assemblages were surveyed in eight selected habitats in the Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve in Baja California Sur, Mexico. We compared the species composition and relative abundance among habitats, considering habitat characteristics, such as vegetation type, vegetation ground coverage, and soil types. Thirteen lizard species were recorded. The most abundant species in almost all habitats was Uta stansburiana, accounting for 59% of all observations. Cnemidophorus tigris was the second most abundant species, accounting for 12% of all observations. The richest habitat was the rocky lower elevations of the Sierra de San Francisco (nine species). However, the habitat with the highest diversity value was Scammon's dunes. Implications of our findings for lizard conservation in this biosphere reserve are discussed.  相似文献

Summary We have molecularly cloned the rDt transposon, one component of the classic Dotted two-element system of controlling elements. The rDt transposon was identified as a DNA insertion in each of two independent mutation events of the maize A1 gene, a gene necessary for the biosynthesis of anthocyanin pigment. Both mutant alleles result in a stable, anthocyaninless phenotype in all plant tissues. When the transposon Dotted, (Dt), is present in the genome each allele exhibits a characteristic mutable phenotype (spots of anthocyanin pigmentation). The DNA insertion has been designated rDt, for it responds to or is regulated by the Dt element to allow expression of the otherwise mutated gene, and it had not been named in earlier genetic studies. Sequence analysis revealed the rDt element to be an identical 704 bp insertion within the two mutable alleles, but in opposite orientation and in different exons of the gene. rDt contains an imperfect terminal inverted repeat with similarity to transposable elements of various species. A duplication of 8 bp of the target host site is formed upon integration of the element, and the element is excised from the locus in a germinal revertant. The difference in phenotype of the two unstable alleles, a1 and am-1:Cache, is discussed.  相似文献

Transforming growth factors 1 and2 (TGF-1 and2), tested in a clonogenic assay against primary cells from human tumors, suppress proliferation to different extents. In nineteen of twenty-six cell cultures, proliferation was < 50% of control with factor at 0.04 or 0.4 nM. Of these, TGF- 2 was more active than TGF-1 in fourteen; and TGF-1 was more active than TGF-2 in five. In seven of the nineteen, proliferation was 0% with one or the other factor. In contrast, cisplatin was much less effective in inhibiting proliferation of some of the same cells even at 1,000 or more times the molar concentration of the factors. Surprisingly, when TGF- 1 and TGF-2 were combined at equal concentrations, the antiproliferative effect of one was cancelled or markedly inhibited by the other.  相似文献

Question: Can wild ungulates efficiently maintain and restore open habitats? Location: Brandenburg, NE Germany. Methods: The effect of wild ungulate grazing and browsing was studied in three successional stages: (1) Corynephorus canescens‐dominated grassland; (2) ruderal tall forb vegetation dominated by Tanacetum vulgare; and (3) Pinus sylvestris‐pioneer forest. The study was conducted over 3 yr. In each successional stage, six paired 4 m2‐monitoring plots of permanently grazed versus ungrazed plots were arranged in three random blocks. Removal of grazing was introduced de novo for the study. In each plot, percentage cover of each plant and lichen species and total cover of woody plants was recorded. Results: Wild ungulates considerably affected successional pathways and species composition in open habitats but this influence became evident in alteration of abundances of only a few species. Grazing effects differed considerably between successional stages: species richness was higher in grazed versus ungrazed ruderal and pioneer forest plots, but not in the Corynephorus sites. Herbivory affected woody plant cover only in the Pioneer forest sites. Although the study period was too short to observe drastic changes in species richness and woody plant cover, notable changes in species composition were still detected in all successional stages. Conclusion: Wild ungulate browsing is a useful tool to inhibit encroachment of woody vegetation and to conserve a species‐rich, open landscape.  相似文献

This study documents the status of forest vegetation in the karst region of Los Haitises National Park, Dominican Republic, following the abandonment of pastures (5 years), young (5 years) `conucos' (mixed plantings), old (7–30 years) conucos, and cacao plantations (>25 years). We compared these sites to vegetation characteristics of patches of forest in karst valleys (`old forest'–too old to know their exact land use) and on mogote tops with no recent history of human disturbance. The youngest sites date to when squatters were removed from Los Haitises National Park. Forest structure (density, basal area, and species richness of woody plants 1 cm DBH) were all significantly affected by land use. Density was highest in intermediate-aged valley sites (old conucos) and mogote tops, while both basal area and species richness tended to increase with age of abandonment. Although cacao plantations had been abandoned for more than 25 years the species diversity was low, due to continued regeneration of this persistent crop. Abandoned pastures had the greatest nonwoody biomass and were dominated by the fern Nephrolepis multiflora which had completely replaced pasture grasses. An ordination of the woody plant communities separated the mogote tops from valleys, emphasizing the strong control that topography has on the forest community in moist and wet tropical forests on karst substrates. Valley sites were arranged in the ordination in order of their age, suggesting a successional sequence converging on the composition of the `old forest' sites.  相似文献

The T-cell receptor (TCR) and loci are particularly interesting because of their unique genomic structure, in that the gene segments for each locus are interspersed. The origin of this remarkable gene segment arrangement is obscure. In this report, we investigated the evolution of the TCR and variable loci and their respective recombination signal sequences (RSSs). Our phylogenetic analyses divided the and variable gene segments into two major groups each with distinguishing motifs in both the framework and complementarity determining regions (CDRs). Sequence analyses revealed that TCR variable segments share similar CDR2 sequences with immunoglobulin light chain variable segments, possibly revealing similar evolutionary histories. Maximum likelihood analysis of the region on Chromosome 14q11.2 containing the loci revealed two possible ancestral TCR / variable segments, TRDV2 and TRAV1-1/1-2, respectively. Maximum parsimony revealed different evolutionary patterns between the variable segment and RSS of the same variable gene arguing for dissimilar evolutionary origins. Two models could account for this difference: a V(D)J recombination activity involving embedded heptamer-like motifs in the germline genome, or, more plausibly, an unequal sister chromatid crossing-over. Either mechanism would have resulted in increased diversity for the adaptive immune system.  相似文献

Summary Coatline ecosystems on Oahu, Hawaii were described in terms of vegetation composition and structure, and environmental components such as climate, physiography, exposure, substratum, and ground water. Vegetation patterns were related to these environmental components. Relevés were established in 22 study areas around Oahu to study the broader patterns of vegetation and environment, and 2 m wide belt-transects were laid out in 16 areas to study structural and floristic zonation from the ocean edge to the limit of the strand flora inland. Physiographic position, substrate type, wind exposure and climate (through climate-diagrams) were determined for each site. Soil parameters determined along the transects were salt concentration, pH, organic carbon, moisture equivalent, soil moisture at 15 atmospheres pressure, and available moisture.Three levels of pattern in vegetation distribution were inferred. First, there were similarities and differences between study areas in terms of vegetation composition and structure, and environmental components. Thirteen ecosystem-classes were recognized on the bases of dominant species and landform: Hibiscus ecosystem on beach flat, Scaevola on dunes, Scaevola on talus and alluvium, Scaevola on raised coral rock, Scaevola on rocky basalt coast, Chloris-Sida on talus, Prosopis on dunes, Prosopis on talus and alluvium, Prosopis on tuffaceous headland, Chloris-Prosopis on dune and clay flat complex, Batis on mud flats, Rhizophora on tidal flats, and Scirpus-Eichornia in fresh-water pond.A second level of pattern was that of zonation into physiognomic zones, and a third that of floristic zonation or change in species composition with distance from sea. Only seven ecosystems, representing five ecosystem-classes (Scaevola on dunes, Scaevola on coral rock, Prosopis on dunes, Prosopis on talus and alluvium, and Prosopis on tuffaccous headland), showed distinct physiognomic zones. But all emerged ecosystems showed floristic zonation.The distribution of the ecosystems coastwise is most broadly related to rainfall and drought patterns, to exposure to wind and surf, and to salinity of soil and water. Hibiscus ecosystems occur in wet, protected beach flats of terrigenous sand, found in windward coasts; Scaevola ecosystems in areas exposed to intense wind and salt spray; Prosopis ecosystems and their variant, Chloris-Prosopis ecosystem, in droughtly areas of the leeward coast; Chloris-Sida ecosystem on rocky soils in the same droughty climate; Batis ecosystems on mud flats of high soil- and ground-water salinity; Rhizophora ecosystems in protected shorelines subject to tides; and Scirpus-Eichornia ecosystem in still fresh water.Salt concentration decreased markedly with distance inland in fine-textured soils, but showed only slight increases or decreases in coarse-textured dune soils. Organic matter showed increases, with three transects registering increases of 15% organic C at peak portions. pH was very variable; alkaline values arising largely from a high proportion of calcium carbonate parent material or high salt content and more acid values arising from greater organic matter incorporation. The range of many of the strand species has been increasingly limited by direct disturbance and indirectly by the seaward encroachment of introduced Prosopis. But they are still persisting (in larger or smaller numbers) in Scaevola ecosystems.  相似文献

Post-fire vegetation regeneration was studied for a 6-year period in a 13-year-old-artificial forest consisting of Larix kaempferi with a dense undergrowth of Sasa senanensis. The study site was classified into three fire severity categories according to the degree of Sasa senanensis scorching, that is, a high-severity category, a mid-severity category, and a low-severity category. Study plots were established in areas which fitted the criteria for each category, and in nearby unburned sites. A total of 41 woody species were newly emerged during the 6-year study period in the burned and unburned plots. Only a few seedlings and resprouts emerged in the unburned plots, while many seedlings emerged in the high-severity plots from the first year after fire onward. A high-severity fire that burns the rhizomes of Sasa is necessary for the vegetation recovery by germination of seed. Whereas the establishment of seedlings was restricted to a few years after fire, the regeneration through resprouting continued into the last year of observation. The survival time of resprouts was longer than that of seedlings, and the survival time of shade-tolerant species was longer than that of shade-intolerant species. In contrast, shade-intolerant species grew more rapidly than shade-tolerant species. The plants ability to exceed the maximum height of the Sasa before the bamboo recovers can be critical to the survival of shade-intolerant species. Because resprouts have a stronger resistance to the shade of Sasa than seedlings, the resprouts of shade-tolerant species play a major role in the re-establishment of woody species after fire in sites with considerable Sasa ground-cover.  相似文献
