This paper shows how Yolngu dancing embodies statements about being‐in‐the‐world and being‐with‐others and, from a performance perspective based on participation, explores the sensuous and affective nature of intercorporeality. By focusing on virtuosity and the practice of the ‘curse of compliments’, the paper argues that the meaning of Yolngu dancing is between the steps, between the performers and other participants in a ceremony—in the empathic space one enters through dancing. Empathy, both in the context of Yolngu performance and of engagement in fieldwork, is thus a modality of co‐presence and co‐presencing, an encounter at a level of intensity which opens the way to an ever‐deepening involvement with others.  相似文献

doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2012.00665.x A preliminary report of the cost‐effectiveness of tooth replacement strategies for partially dentate elders Objective: To compare the cost‐effectiveness of conventional treatment using partial dentures with functionally orientated treatment to replace missing teeth for partially dentate elders using a randomised controlled clinical trial. Background: In many countries, including the Republic of Ireland, the only publically funded treatment option offered to partially dentate older patients is a removable partial denture. However, evidence suggests that these removable prostheses are unpopular with patients and can potentially increase the risk of further dental disease and subsequent tooth loss. Materials and Methods: Fourty‐four partially dentate patients aged 65 years and older were recruited. Patients were randomly assigned to the two treatment arms of the study. The conventional treatment group received removable partial dentures to replace all missing natural teeth. The functionally orientated group was restored to a Shortened Dental Arch (SDA) of 10 occluding contacts using resin‐bonded bridgework (RBB). The costs associated with each treatment were recorded. Effectiveness was measured in terms of the impact on oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL) using OHIP‐14. Results: Both groups reported improvements in OHRQoL 1 month after completion of treatment. The conventional treatment group required 8.3 clinic visits as compared to 4.4 visits for the functionally orientated group. The mean total treatment time was 183 min 19 s for the conventional group vs. 124 min 8 s for the functionally orientated group. The average cost of treatment for the conventional group was 487.74 Euros compared to 356.20 Euros for the functional group. Conclusions: Functionally orientated treatment was more cost‐effective than conventional treatment in terms of treatment effect and opportunity costs to the patients’ time.  相似文献

Departure decisions of songbirds at ecological barriers they encounter en route can strongly influence time, energy and survival costs of migration. To date, most field studies of departure decisions and their correlates have used indirect methods and followed migrants at a single stopover site, with limited information on what happens to individuals after they depart from the site. We used an automated radiotelemetry array extending 350 km from southwest Nova Scotia to southern Maine to study the migratory and stopover movements of Northern Waterthrushes Parkesia noveboracensis, Red‐eyed Vireos Vireo olivaceus and Yellow‐rumped Warblers Setophaga coronata in relation to fuel load and weather at the northeastern edge of the Gulf of Maine. From the 105 radio‐transmitters we deployed in southwest Nova Scotia, we recorded 42 landscape‐scale stopover flights and 47 migratory flights by 75 individuals. Of the migratory flights, 57% were orientated southwest, a trajectory that, if held, would require individuals to complete a 350–440 km overwater flight. The remaining 43% of migratory flights were orientated northwest, away from the Gulf of Maine, and 15 individuals were confirmed to have detoured around all or a portion of the barrier, as evidenced by their being re‐detected over the Bay of Fundy and/or along the coast of Maine between 4 h and 15 days later. Across all individuals, initial fat score had a positive effect on departure probability, especially for individuals that made stopover flights. Among weather variables, tailwind assistance was the best predictor of migratory departures but did not appear to be the main factor determining whether individuals orientated towards or away from the Gulf of Maine. Weather had little effect on departure decisions of individuals that made stopover flights. These differences in the correlates of migratory departures and stopover flights would probably not have been distinguishable had our study been restricted to a local scale. Therefore, our findings highlight the importance of expanding the scale at which departure decisions and the ecology of stopover in general are studied.  相似文献

Here we highlight two ontologically different modes of care and management of endemic stingless bees in Australia. While Indigenous Yolngu and backyard beekeepers both engage in caring for stingless bees, neither way of living with bees would classically be defined as ‘domestication’, yet bees are encompassed within the ‘home’, or domus. This requires a different perspective in relation to the kinds of multispecies connections between humans and other beings. We propose that the key difference between Aboriginal Australians hunting for sugarbag on country and beekeeping in the backyard is in the way bee populations are maintained and in the degree of ecological separation from the surrounding environment. For Yolngu the domus is the bush. Backyard beekeeping involves modes of care that separate bees from outside predators, pests and other detrimental elements, while the Yolngu relationship with bees is primarily concerned with maintaining the integrity of the surrounding ecology, or the homeland.  相似文献

In discussing the public commemoration of the Armenian genocide and the case of a Turkish refugee‐turned‐memory‐activist in Germany, this article focuses on migrants as they mediate political concerns by reference to the German discourse and practice of Vergangenheitsbewältigung (confronting the past). Such engagements shed light on the intersection of a performative and inclusionary dimension of citizenship inscribed in the figure of the repentant perpetrator and the continuous re‐ethnicization of subjects by reference to particular nationalized histories. The analysis thus reveals the ‘memorial’ contour of a normative German citizen‐subject, one that is self‐reflexive vis‐à‐vis his or her national past. The article charts how the politics of history and citizenship thus play out at the level of subjectivity, implicating registers of affect and aesthetics that are not captured by the more commonly employed framework of ‘memory’, which falls short of analytical import precisely because it lacks a theory of the subject.  相似文献

For Christian Yolngu in Arnhem Land visions shape the imagined, embodied and affective experiences of places of danger, illness, healing and general wellbeing. In this paper, I argue that Yolngu have consistently constructed their Christian faith through visions stemming from an ancestral aesthetic embodied in the environment. As a result, religious ideology and social action have sometimes been seen as syncretic, raising questions about how Yolngu understand and experience Christian conversion, encounter and revelation. I argue that Yolngu spiritual experiences emerge from the sentiments associated with ancestral places that act as emotive sites for remapping an ancestral aesthetic as Christian experience. The resultant emotional and spiritual synchronicity underlies a Yolngu Christianity that is corporeal and abstracted, negotiated and strategic, practical and experiential.  相似文献

An investigation of the internal cranial anatomy of the anomodont Kawingasaurus from the Upper Permian Usili Formation in Tanzania by means of neutron tomography revealed an unusual inner and middle ear anatomy such as extraordinarily inflated vestibules, lateroventrally orientated stapes with large footplates, and a small angle between the planes of the anterior and lateral semicircular canals. The vestibule has a volume, which is about 25 times larger than the human vestibule, although Kawingasaurus has only a skull length of approximately 40 mm. Vestibule inflation and enlarged stapes footplates are thought to be functionally correlated with bone‐conduction hearing; both morphologies have been observed in fossorial vertebrates using seismic signals for communication. The firmly fused triangular head with spatulate snout was probably used for digging and preadapted to seismic signal detection. The quadrate‐quadratojugal complex was able to transmit sound from the articular to the stapes by small vibrations of the quadrate process, which formed a ball and socket joint with the squamosal. Mechanical considerations suggest that the ventrolaterally orientated stapes of Kawingasaurus was mechanically better suited to transmit seismic sound from the ground to the fenestra vestibuli than a horizontal orientated stapes. The low sound pressure level transformer ratio of 2–3 in Kawingasaurus points to a seismic sensitivity of the middle ear and a vestigial or reduced sensitivity to airborne sound. Three hypothetical pathways of bone conduction in Kawingasaurus are discussed: 1) sound transmission via the spatulate snout and skull roof to the otic capsules, 2) relative movements resulting from the inertia of the mandible if sound is percepted with the skull, and 3) bone conduction from the substrate via mandible, jaw articulation, and stapes to the inner ear. Impact of tooth replacement strategies on the nutritional status of partially‐dentate elders Objective: To investigate the impact of tooth replacement on the nutritional status of partially dentate older patients, and, to compare two different tooth replacement strategies; conventional treatment using removable partial dentures and functionally orientated treatment based on the shortened dental arch. Background: Amongst older patients, diet plays a key role in disease prevention, as poor diets have been linked to numerous illnesses. Poor oral health and loss of teeth can have very significant negative effects on dietary intake and nutritional status for elderly patients. There is evidence that good oral health generally, has positive effects on the nutritional intake of older adults. Materials and methods: A randomised, controlled clinical trial was designed to investigate the impact of tooth replacement on the nutritional status of partially dentate elders. Forty‐four patients aged over 65 years completed the trial, with 21 allocated to conventional treatment and 23 allocated to functionally orientated treatment. Nutritional status was accessed at baseline and after treatment using the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and a range of haematological markers. Results: At baseline, relationships were observed between the number of occluding tooth contacts and some measures of nutritional status. As the number of contacts increased, MNA scores (R = 0.16), in addition to vitamin B12 (R = 0.21), serum folate (R = 0.32) and total lymphocyte count (R = 0.35), also increased. After treatment intervention, the only measure of nutritional status that showed a statistically significant improvement for both treatment groups was MNA score (p = 0.03). No significant between group differences were observed from analysis of the haematological data. Conclusion: In this study, prosthodontic rehabilitation with both conventional treatment and functionally orientated treatment resulted in an improvement in MNA score. Haematological markers did not illustrate a clear picture of improvement in nutritional status for either treatment group.  相似文献

Synthetic calcite (CaCO3) particles are found in a broad range of applications. The geometry of particles produced from limestone or precipitation are versatile but limited to basic shapes. The microalga Emiliania huxleyi produces micro‐structured calcite platelets, called coccoliths. This article presents the results of an application‐orientated study, which includes characteristic values also used in the calcite industry for particle evaluation. It is demonstrated that coccoliths are significantly different from all industrial particles produced so far. Coccoliths are porous particles, mainly consisted of calcium carbonate, with further elements such as Mg, Si, Sr, and Fe often embedded in their structure. Their structure is extremely sophisticated, while the overall particle morphology and particle size distribution are homogeneous. This study gives a first inside into the potential of these exceptional objects and may set further impulses for their utilization in specific calcite particle applications.  相似文献

Corimbatichnus fernandezi n.igen, n. isp. is a cluster of fossil bee cells from the Uruguayan Late Cretaceous‐early Tertiary Asencio Formation. It is composed of rows of small excavated cells contained in paleosol peds. Cells have inner surfaces somewhat rough and are closed with loose material. Separation among cells is very thin, and the cells are orientated uniformly, showing a great economy of space as in some halictine constructions. Corimbatichnus can be distinguished from Rosellichnus and Uruguay by its convex face, excavated cells and the spatial arrangement of them.  相似文献

Objective: This study examined the extent to which consistency of self‐monitoring by participants and their parents was related to weight control over an initial period of 3 months within the context of a treatment program for morbidly obese low‐income minority adolescents. Research Methods and Procedures: Eighty‐three obese adolescents (mean age, 13.0 years; 51% boys; 92% African American; mean BMI, 43.0 kg/m2; mean BMI z‐score, 6.0) and at least one parent participated in a long‐term treatment program that included a very‐low‐fat dietary focus, weekly group cognitive‐behavior therapy, monthly nutrition education classes, a 12‐week physical therapy class, and medical monitoring. Results: Participants who self‐monitored on the majority of days compared with those who did not self‐monitor at all or who self‐monitored infrequently attended more sessions and generally lost more weight over the first 3 months. Although parents signed behavioral contracts committing to self‐monitor their own eating and exercising over the first month, only 12% did so. Nonetheless, participants whose parents self‐monitored were much more likely to self‐monitor consistently and lose weight during the first 3 months. Discussion: These results indicate that self‐monitoring is a cornerstone of successful weight control even for morbidly obese low‐income minority adolescents; targeting consistency of self‐monitoring among these high‐risk weight controllers and their parents should be just as important as it is for more affluent and less overweight adolescents.  相似文献

Mass spectrometry‐based proteomics starts with identifications of peptides and proteins, which provide the bases for forming the next‐level hypotheses whose “validations” are often employed for forming even higher level hypotheses and so forth. Scientifically meaningful conclusions are thus attainable only if the number of falsely identified peptides/proteins is accurately controlled. For this reason, RAId continued to be developed in the past decade. RAId employs rigorous statistics for peptides/proteins identification, hence assigning accurate P‐values/E‐values that can be used confidently to control the number of falsely identified peptides and proteins. The RAId web service is a versatile tool built to identify peptides and proteins from tandem mass spectrometry data. Not only recognizing various spectra file formats, the web service also allows four peptide scoring functions and choice of three statistical methods for assigning P‐values/E‐values to identified peptides. Users may upload their own protein database or use one of the available knowledge integrated organismal databases that contain annotated information such as single amino acid polymorphisms, post‐translational modifications, and their disease associations. The web service also provides a friendly interface to display, sort using different criteria, and download the identified peptides and proteins. The title of this essay sets its dialogic structure. Ronald Berndt's writing at times obscured the core insights that he had about Yolngu society, and partly as a consequence Australian anthropology has not yet made the best use of the immense richness of his ethnographic legacy. In retrospect, in many areas of their research the Berndts were pioneers addressing themes and topics that had been for too long ignored. They opened up new fields of study and redressed some of the imbalances associated with functionalism, the dominant paradigm of their early years as anthropologists. In this essay I examine two areas of Ronald Berndt's writings in which he had insights that were not fully appreciated at the time: the analysis of Yolngu social organisation and the analysis of Yolngu sexual symbolism. In both cases, his absorption in Yolngu ethnography made him aware that his predecessors had overlooked important themes of Yolngu society, yet in both cases his analysis was less convincing than it might have been.  相似文献

Cysteine (Cys) is a critically important amino acid, serving a variety of functions within proteins including structural roles, catalysis, and regulation of function through post‐translational modifications. Predicting which Cys residues are likely to be reactive is a very sought after feature. Few methods are currently available for the task, either based on evaluation of physicochemical features (e.g., pKa and exposure) or based on similarity with known instances. In this study, we developed an algorithm (named HAL‐Cy) which blends previous work with novel implementations to identify reactive Cys from nonreactive. HAL‐Cy present two major components: (i) an energy based part, rooted on the evaluation of H‐bond network contributions and (ii) a knowledge based part, composed of different profiling approaches (including a newly developed weighting matrix for sequence profiling). In our evaluations, HAL‐Cy provided significantly improved performances, as tested in comparisons with existing approaches. We implemented our algorithm in a web service (Cy‐preds), the ultimate product of our work; we provided it with a variety of additional features, tools, and options: Cy‐preds is capable of performing fully automated calculations for a thorough analysis of Cys reactivity in proteins, ranging from reactivity predictions (e.g., with HAL‐Cy) to functional characterization. We believe it represents an original, effective, and very useful addition to the current array of tools available to scientists involved in redox biology, Cys biochemistry, and structural bioinformatics. Many plant genomes display high levels of repetitive sequences. The assembly of these complex genomes using short high‐throughput sequence reads is still a challenging task. Underestimation or disregard of repeat complexity in these datasets can easily misguide downstream analysis. Detection of repetitive regions by k‐mer counting methods has proved to be reliable. Easy‐to‐use applications utilizing k‐mer counting are in high demand, especially in the domain of plants. We present Kmasker plants, a tool that uses k‐mer count information as an assistant throughout the analytical workflow of genome data that is provided as a command‐line and web‐based solution. Beside its core competence to screen and mask repetitive sequences, we have integrated features that enable comparative studies between different cultivars or closely related species and methods that estimate target specificity of guide RNAs for application of site‐directed mutagenesis using Cas9 endonuclease. In addition, we have set up a web service for Kmasker plants that maintains pre‐computed indices for 10 of the economically most important cultivated plants. In the flower of Hydrolea palustris, unusually orientated with one sepal abaxially, organogenesis starts in following sequence: five sepals (2/5 sequence), five simultaneously initiated alternating petals, five episepalous stamens, two (seldom three) carpels forming a coenocarpous septate gynoecium. The two carpels are orientated rather in the diagonal floral plane than in the median one. Petal primordia fuse very late by forming interprimordial bridges (late sympetaly!). Many ovules develop on considerably widened placentas. On the very basis of the superior ovary a five-humped nectary disk is formed.Within Solanales (APG II 2003) late sympetaly, an intrastaminal disk and a 2-carpellate, septate, superior ovary are found in Hydroleaceae, Convolvulaceae, and Solanaceae. Enlarged axile placentas characterize Hydrolea, Solanaceae, and Sphenocleaceae but Sphenocleaceae differ considerably by early sympetaly. Montiniaceae differ by having a choripetalous corolla. Nearly diagonal orientation of the carpels seems to relate Hydrolea close to Solanaceae, but the orientation of the calyx is different.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the ciliary apparatus of multiciliated epidermal cells in larval and adult sipunculids is described and the phylogenetic implications discussed. The pelagosphera of Apionsoma misakianum has a dense cover of epidermal cilia on the head region. The cilia have a long, narrow distal part and two long ciliary rootlets, one rostrally and one vertically orientated. The adult Phascolion strombus has cilia on the nuchal organ and on the oral side of the tentacles. These cilia have a narrow distal part as in the A. misakianum larva, but the ciliary rootlets have a different structure. The first rootlet on the anterior face of the basal body is very short and small. The second, vertically orientated rootlet is long and relatively thick. The two ciliary rootlets present in the larval A. misakianum are similar to the basal metazoan type of ciliary apparatus of epidermal multiciliated cells and thus likely represent the plesiomorphic state. The minute first rootlet in the adult P. strombus is viewed as a consequence of a secondary reduction. No possible synapomorphic character with the phylogenetically troublesome Xenoturbella was found.  相似文献

Chiral considerations are found to be very much relevant in various aspects of forensic toxicology and pharmacology. In forensics, it has become increasingly important to identify the chirality of doping agents to avoid legal arguments and challenges to the analytical findings. The scope of this study was to develop an liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LCMS) method for the enantiomeric separation of typical illicit drugs such as ephedrines (ie, 1S,2R(+)‐ephedrine and 1R,2S(?)‐ephedrine) and pseudoephedrine (ie, R,R(?)‐pseudoephedrine and S,S(+)‐pseudoephedrine) by using normal phase chiral liquid chromatography–high‐resolution mass spectrometry technique. Results show that the Lux i‐amylose‐1 stationary phase has very broad and balancing‐enantio‐recognition properties towards ephedrine analogues, and this immobilized chiral stationary phase may offer a powerful tool for enantio‐separation of different types of pharmaceuticals in the normal phase mode. The type of mobile phase and organic modifier used appear to have dramatic influences on separation quality. Since the developed method was able to detect and separate the enantiomers at very low levels (in pico grams), this method opens easy access for the unambiguous identification of these illicit drugs and can be used for the routine screening of the biological samples in the antidoping laboratories.  相似文献

We tested directly the differences in the aggregation kinetics of three important β amyloid peptides, the full‐length Aβ1‐42, and the two N‐terminal truncated and pyroglutamil modified Aβpy3‐42 and Aβpy11‐42 found in different relative concentrations in the brains in normal aging and in Alzheimer disease. By following the circular dichroism signal and the ThT fluorescence of the solution in phosphate buffer, we found substantially faster aggregation kinetics for Aβpy3‐42. This behavior is due to the particular sequence of this peptide, which is also responsible for the specific oligomeric aggregation states, found by TEM, during the fibrillization process, which are very different from those of Aβ1‐42, more prone to fibril formation. In addition, Aβpy3‐42 is found here to have an inhibitory effect on Aβ1‐42 fibrillogenesis, coherently with its known greater infective power. The stability of single‐crystalline/monocrystalline‐like perovskite film is expected to be better than its microcrystalline counterparts. In the present work, highly orientated perovskite thin films (CH3NH3PbI3–xClx) are prepared by means of aquointermediates assisted solution process. It displays super‐duper preferred‐orientation along <110> direction that is close to the single crystal, and its diffraction intensity ratio of (110)/(310) is nearly two orders of magnitude higher in contrast to the films that prepared by traditional way. Owing to its superior performances, e.g., highly crystallized quality, stress‐free inside films, longer electron lifetime, faster temporal response time, etc., the highly orientated perovskite‐based solar cells accordingly allow realizing high efficiency while improving its thermal stability.  相似文献
