Opius concolor Szépligeti is a parasite ofBactrocera oleae (Gmelin) and other Tephritid flies. Its development rate was studied with the Sharpe-DeMichele mathematical model, modified by Schoofieldet al. (1981), using the S.A.S. program elaborated by Wagneret al. (1984). This program chose a four parameter poikilotherm model with high temperatures inhibition. Duration of parasitoid development at seven constant temperatures ranged from 14.6±1.7 days at 28°C (males), to 77.2±5.5 days at 15°C (females). Male development was consistently found to be shorter than that of females. Low development threshold and degree-days needed to complete total development were determined with the “Regression Line” and “Thermal Summation” methods. Values (cumulated for both sexes) were found to be respectively 11.7°C and 11.8°C (low threshold), 255.9 and 251.9±16.8 days (thermal constant). Considerations on the possibility of establishingOpius concolor in northern and central Italian regions are discussed.  相似文献

Releases ofOpius concolor Szepl. andO. concolor var.siculus Mon. were carried out in the spring to determine if they could be used as a biological control agent against the heavy infestation ofDacus oleae Gmel. which occurs on Corfu at that time. At an initial density of 300–400 parasites per tree the mean parasitism rates of 3rd stage larvae ranged from 30–50% in the 1st week following the release, indicating thatOpius could work well in the spring in the tall trees with large numbers of ripe and heavily infested fruits that are found on Corfu.  相似文献

Psyttalia cosyrae (Wilkinson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a koinobiont, solitary larval-pupal parasitoid of Ceratitis cosyra (Walker) (Diptera: Tephritidae), and possibly other tephritid fruit flies. The effect of temperature on developmental time and longevity of this parasitoid was investigated and the thermal requirement at six constant temperatures (15±0.5, 20±0.5, 25±0.5, 27±0.5, 30±0.5, and 33±0.05°C) and 60-70% R.H was determined. The developmental rate increased with an increase in temperature. Females took a longer time to complete development than males at all temperatures tested. Development from egg to adult emergence required 244 degree-days (DD) above a thermal threshold of 11.9°C for both sexes pooled, 233 DD above 12.0°C for males and 256 DD above 11.6°C for females. Adult longevity was affected by temperature, and females lived longer than males at all temperatures tested.  相似文献

Psyttalia concolor (Szèpligeti) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a koinobiont endoparasitoid of several species of tephritid (Diptera) larvae, such as Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin) and Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann). Here, we report on the effects of imidacloprid and fipronil on P. concolor females, when different routes of exposure were evaluated: residual contact (cover and bait sprays) and via treatment of host species. Moreover, the persistence of the bait formulated compound also was studied. For each experiment, lethal (mortality) and sublethal effects (parasitization rate or longevity) were studied. Fipronil produced 100% mortality irrespective of exposure route, and it was very persistent, because 34-d-old residues still produced this high mortality rate, being as toxic or even more toxic than the reference product dimethoate. Toxicity of imidacloprid depends on the mode of exposure, although always remained less toxic than dimethoate. Imidacloprid caused high mortality or sublethal effect to the progeny in cover sprays and when applied via treated host, being harmless in bait sprays application. In conclusion, our results suggest that fipronil should not be used in the field when the parasitoid is present. On the contrary, although imidacloprid is physiologically active against females of P. concolor, ecological selectivity may result through the use of bait treatment.  相似文献

Behavioral interactions among Cotesia urabaeAustin and Allen, Dolichogenidea eucalyptiAustin and Allen (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), and their host Uraba lugensWalker, the gum leaf skeletonizer (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), were observed at three host sizes over a 20-min period. These sizes were first instar (small, gregarious), fourth-fifth instar (mid, gregarious), sixth-seventh instar (large, solitary) larvae. Unlike C. urabae, D. eucalyptiused its legs to hold small larvae before ovipositor insertion. D. eucalyptialso visited patches of small larvae more frequently, proceeded less often through patches of mid larvae, and made significantly fewer ovipositions in mid and large larvae. Small larvae responded to both parasitoids by dispersing outward, while mid larvae responded to parasitoids by moving inward to form a denser group. Larvae reared or thrashed after each parasitoid visit, especially mid larvae, and some continued to do so for up to 2h after parasitoid departure. Mid and large larvae occasionally injured parasitoids by biting their appendages. By rearing or thrashing immediately prior to an encounter with a parasitoid, mid and large larvae decreased the likelihood of being parasitized by up to 50%.  相似文献

Larval tobacco hornworms,Manduca sexta (L.), of 2 different colonies were exposed to parasitism by the gregarious endoparasitoid,Cotesia congregata (Say). A comparison was made of parasitoid larval, pre-pupal, and pupal mortality, female and male dry weight and larval development time. In general, “Maryland” hornworms were more suitable hosts than “North Carolina” hornworms. Although the presence of dietary nicotine increased parasitoid mortality in individuals reared from hornworms of both colonies, the effect was more severe among individuals parasitizing the North Carolina hornworms. Goniozus sensorius Gordh (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) was recorded as a major parasite of the pumpkin caterpillar,Diaphania indica (Saunders) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). This paper provides detailed information on the oviposition behaviour ofG. sensorius. Prior to oviposition, the parasite temporarily paralyses the host larva. The paralysed condition lasts for about 2 h. The egg laying process on each larva requires 30 to 60 min. The maximum number of eggs are laid on the 6th and 7th segment, and none in the terminal segments. Generally, oviposition is restricted to 1 segment of the host larva and occasionally on 3 segments. The maximum number of eggs are laid on the 2nd and 3rd day after emergence and the mean number of eggs laid on each host larva was 7.1.  相似文献

The ability of the braconid parasite,Iphiaulax varipalpis Cary to control the beetleDyrphya nigricornis Olivier was evaluated. Field collected samples and specimens reared in polyethylene paper tubes under laboratory conditions (23.0°C±1.0 at 70% r.h) were used. Field parasitism was low (10.72%) while laboratory parasitism was high (57.66%). The parasite detected the hosts very easily in the laboratory. This ability is minimised in thick canopies ofCoffea arabica L. Host colonization was brisk (90 seconds) and confined to a near absolute area of discovery, measuring 4.18±0.41 cm. The parasite reproduces gregariously with female lifespan being approximately double the male period. The parasites are very active at the age of 10 days. As they age their potential fecundity (232 oocytes) reduces drastically with oviposition.   相似文献

The adult longevity of the California strain ofVenturia canescens (Gravenhorst) [Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae], a larval parasite of the Mediterranean flour moth,Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) [Lepidoptera: Phycitidae] was studied. The effects of the presence or absence of food (honey streak) in relationship to the ovipositional exertion as influenced by the presence or absence of hosts was considered. It was found that in the absence of any food, their longevity was drastically reduced and ovipositional exertion had no effect on this curtailment. However, in the presence of food, ovipositional activity was a major factor in the curtailment of adult longevity.  相似文献

Biosteres arinsanus (Sonan) (=B. oophilus Fullaway) showed a strong preference forDacus dorsalis Hendel overCeratitis capitata (Wiedemann) in choice tests using papaya fruits infested with eggs of both hosts in laboratory studies. In laboratory and field studiesD. dorsalis was the most suitable host. A total of 13,871 parasitoids was produced fromD. dorsalis infested fruits compared with 2,772 fromC. capitata infested fruits.   相似文献

Microplitis croceipes (Cresson), a parasitoid ofHeliothis spp., was treated topically with field rates of 5 formulated insecticides commonly used in cotton to controlHeliothis spp. Treatment with the pyrethroid fenvalerate, a mixture of the formamidine chlordimeform plus fenvalerate, and the carbamate thiodicarb resulted in nearly 100% survival at both the lowest and highest field rates recommended for these insecticides. The organophosphate acephate and the carbamate methomyl were extremely toxic to adultM. croceipes, causing 100% mortality at the lowest recommended field rates. Comparisons are made to previously reported laboratory toxicity data for some of these insecticides for adultM. croceipes. Choice of insecticides to control pyrethroid-resistantHeliothis spp., and the effects of these insecticides on adultM. croceipes survival, are discussed. Development of the solitary parasitoidApanteles sp. groupultor in larvae ofEctomyelois ceratoniae was investigated at different constant temperatures. Temperature had a significant effect upon parasitoid development during both host-internal and host-external phases. The duration of the host-internal phase varied from 41 days at 15–17°C to 8.6 days at 29°C, the duration of the host-external phase varied from 16.5 days at 16–17°C to 5.4 days at 29°C. Effect of photoperiod upon parasite development and parasitization of hosts were determined under daily photophases, of 24, 16, 12, 8 and 0 hours. No significant differences in oviposition rate were found among the 5 treatments. In any photoperiod studied, the parasite progeny developed normally without entering diapause.   相似文献

Two factors, among others, influence the oviposition of Opius dissitus Muesebeck. The first was the host species, the second the plant upon which the pest host larvae develop. O. dissitus females prefer Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) larvae over those of L. huidobrensis (Blanchard). O. dissitus females were more attracted to the larvae of L. trifolii or L. huidobrensis when these were present on courgette rather than tomato or lettuce.  相似文献

Among 6 laboratory hosts tested, the egg-larval parasitoidChelonus blackburni Cameron completed its development in only 3;Corcyra cephalonica Stainton,Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) andAchroia grisella (Fabricius). The parasitoid failed to develop inSpodoptera litura (Fabricius),Galleria mellonella L. andSitotroga cerealella (Olivier). The development period of the parasitoids obtained from permissive hosts correspond to the development period of their hosts. Development period ofP. operculella, A grisella andC. cephalonica were 24.7±2.0, 39.5±2.1 and 50.5±4.1 days respectively while the development period of the parasitoid reared from these hosts were 25.8±1.6, 36.4±3.5 and 42.5±3.5 days respectively. The fecundity of the parasitoids reared onA. grisella, P. operculella andC. cephalonica were 365.2±52.8, 287.9±101.9 and 248.7±50.8 respectively. The size of the parasitoids reared from the above 3 hosts also followed the similar trend. However, no significant difference was observed on the percent parasitism and the longevity of the parasitoids reared on different hosts. This study was conducted at a temperature of 24±2°C and 60±5% RH. Contribution No 46001 of Biological Control Centre (NCIPM), Bangalore.  相似文献

Adult size, longevity, egg load dynamics and oviposition ofMicroplitis rufiventris Kok. which began their development in the first, second, third (preferred hosts) or fourth (non-preferred hosts) instar larvae of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) were studied. The parasitoid size was largely determined by the initial host size at parasitism. Non-ovipositing females derived from older hosts lived for longer periods than those derived from younger ones. However, the ovipositing females, irrespective of their size, lived for almost the same periods. At emergence, the oviducts of adult females contain a significant amount of mature eggs available for oviposition for a few hours on eclosion day. Egg load increases during the early phase of adult life. The amount of additional mature eggs and rate of egg maturation per hour was greater for wasps derived from preferred hosts compared with those in females derived from non-preferred hosts. The pattern of egg production in M. rufiventris females depended on the availability of hosts for parasitization. Host-deprived females depleted the egg complement with aging; the longer the host deprivation, the lower the oviduct egg load. Marked reduction in both realized or potential fecundity of host-deprived females was observed following host availability. Host privation for more than 3 days induced a marked deficit fecundity pattern through the female' s life. The realized fecundity was determined by the interaction among host availability, the number of eggs that are matured over the female' s life span, oviposition rate and host size from which the female was derived. These results suggest that: (i) M. rufiventris wasp is a weak synovigenic species; (ii) the maturation of additional eggs is inhibited once the maximum oviduct egg load is reached; (iii) the egg load of the newly emerged female is significantly less than the realized fecundity; and (iv) because M. rufiventris females oviposit fewer eggs when they begin depleting their egg supply at 3 days, augmentative releases will require release immediately following emergence to ensure the highest parasitization rate in the field.  相似文献

1. The use of floral resource subsidies to improve herbivore suppression by parasitoids requires certain trophic interactions and physiological changes to occur. While the longevity and fecundity of parasitoids are positively affected by nectar subsidies in laboratory studies, the impacts of floral subsidies on the fecundity and longevity of freely foraging parasitoids have not been studied. 2. We studied the longevity and per capita fecundity of naturally occurring Diadegma insulare foraging in cabbage plots with and without borders of flowering buckwheat, Fagopyrum esculentum, as well as relationships between longevity, fecundity, sugar feeding and parasitism rates on larvae of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella. 3. Relative longevity was estimated by counting broken setae on the fringe of the forewing. Floral borders increased the longevity of males and females in adjacent cabbage plots. 4. The egg maturation rate of D. insulare was estimated by comparing egg loads of females collected early in the day with egg loads of females held without hosts in field cages throughout the day. Females in buckwheat cages matured 2.7 eggs per hour while females in control cages resorbed 0.27 eggs over the same time period. 5. The fecundity of females collected in the afternoon was estimated by comparing their actual egg load to the estimated egg load in the absence of oviposition for females in a given plot. Females foraging in buckwheat plots had marginally fewer eggs remaining in their ovaries, and laid marginally more eggs than females in control plots. Females from both treatments carried 30-60 eggs by the afternoon and therefore were time-limited rather than egg-limited. 6. Plots where a greater proportion of females had fed on sugar had longer-lived females. This suggests that feeding enhanced longevity of D. insulare. However, plots with longer-lived and more fecund females did not exhibit higher parasitism rates, although the power of these tests were low.  相似文献

The oviposition behaviour of mated or virgin females of the parasitic wasp,Apanteles glomeratus L., was investigated. Virgin females laid fewer eggs in a shorter time than did mated females (P<0.01), though the attack ratio and attack time of these 2 female types were the same. Progeny sex ratios of mated females suggested the occurrence of sperm shortage, because old mated females produced clutches of a high male proportion, sometimes consisting of males only. Recopulation of females was also observed, but actual insemination did not occur, and therefore,A. glomeratus females are considered to be fundamentally monogamous.  相似文献
