One-year rooted shoots of M.VII apple rootstock were grown fora single season by spraying their roots continuously with nutrientsolutions containing either < 3 ppmMg(Mg(0)) or 45 ppm(Mg(0))to give, respectively, potentially very deficient or healthyplants. The new shoots of half the plants in each of these treatmentswere dipped periodically in a 2 per cent solution of MgSO4.7H2O plus ‘wetter’. Mg(0) undipped plants developed severe symptoms of Mg deficiency, growth was poor, and the shoot/root dry-weight increment ratiowas high; none of these characteristics was found in Mg(0) dippedplants, whose growth was not appreciably less than that of Mg(2)undipped controls. There was little translocation of Mg from leaves to roots: theconcentration of Mg in roots of Mg(0) dipped plants was as lowas that of the undipped. The large accumulation of Mn and, toa less extent, of Fe in Mg(0) dipped roots was not apparentlydetrimental to growth. Growth of Mg(2) dipped plants was similar to that of the undipped. Dipping had little effect on the chemical composition of leaves, except to raise the concentration of Mg.  相似文献

One-year rooted shoots of apple M. VII rootstock were grownfor a single season by spraying their roots continuously withnutrient solutions containing <3, 10, 45, and 135 ppm Mg.These treatments respectively produced plants with a severeMg deficiency (Mg(0)), a mild deficiency (Mg(1)), normal foliageand growth (Mg(2)), and a high level of Mg (Mg(3)). The effectof Mg nutrition on the leaves can explain most of the observedeffects on vegetative growth. Depression of growth of Mg(1))plants was not detected until late in the season although necrosis, typical of Mg deficiency, occurred on the lower leaves by mid-July.This loss of photosynthetic area of leaf was to a large extentcompensated for by increased efficiency of the remaining greenleaves; as the deficiency symptoms progressed, the loss of leaf, and therefore of carbohydrate production, predominated and totalgrowth was affected. The form of the plant was little altered. Symptoms were apparent on leaves of severely deficient Mg(0)plants by late June, and reductions in growth and modificationsin form by August. The poor root systems and thin shoots arelargely attributed to loss of leaf rather than to the low Mgconcentration in these organs. No symptoms of toxicity developed on the Mg(3) plants althoughby the end of the season the total dry weights were less thanthose of the Mg(2) controls, and the plants also produced thickershoots. Plant dry weight, and more especially Mg uptake, increasedfrom Mg(0) to Mg(2) but above this level the gradient of Mguptake in relation to supply was less steep. The excess Mg takenup at the Mg(j) level led to the relatively lower weights ofthese plants. Much of the excess Mg accumulated in the leaves, especially in the older ones. Mg moved from, or accumulatedin, the lower leaves of the shoot according to the level ofMg supplied to the plants. Thus the shoot apex tended towardsnormality both in the concentration of Mg and in its growth. In general, growth of the plant, and of individual componentparts, governed the uptake of elements other than Mg, althoughmore K, Ca, and Mn and less Fe per unit of plant dry weightaccumulated at the lower levels of Mg than at the higher levels.  相似文献

Increasing the concentration of CO2 in the air from the usual300 ppm to 1, 000 ppm in growth rooms with temperatures of 20°C during the 16-h light period and 15° C during the 8-hdark period increased the total dry weight of sugar-beet, barley, and kale by about 5o per cent. A further increase in CO, concentrationto 3, 300 ppm increased dry weight slightly more. These effectsoccurred with light intensities ranging from 3.7 to II.6 caldm–2 min–1 of visible radiation supplied by a mixtureof fluorescent and tungsten lamps, and were only slightly greaterwith the brighter light. Extra CO2 also increased leaf area, though relatively less than dry weight, and the number of barleyshoots but not of sugar-beet or kale leaves; it decreased leaf-arearatio, specific leaf area, and the ratio of tops to roots. Maizewas taller with extra CO2. Net assimilation rates in 1, 000 and 3, 300 ppm CO2 were about20 and 30 per cent respectively greater than in 300 ppm. Uptakeof CO2 in the light by complete tops and single leaves alsoincreased with increase in CO2 concentration. Photosynthesisof leaves of plants recently transferred to a new CO2 concentrationdepended only on that concentration and not on the originalone. Doubling the light intensity from 3.7 to 7.7 cal dm–2min–1 affected dry weight, leaf area, net assimilationrate, etc., similarly to a tenfold increase in CO2 concentration.  相似文献

The rate of photosynthesis and/or dry matter production wasstudied in fully-expanded primary leaves of bean (Phaseolusvulgaris cv. Bulgarian) plants which had been subjected to varioussurgical and hormonal treatments. Between 30 and 40 per centof the assimilates produced by the primary leaves, over a 4-dayperiod starting with expansion of the first trifoliate leaf, were diverted to the growing shoot above the insertion of theprimary leaves. In detopped plants (i.e. lacking all leaves, stem and buds above insertion of primary leaves), both the rateof net photosynthesis (NP) of the primary leaves 4 days afterdetopping, and the mean net assimilation rate (NAR) over thisinterval, did not differ significantly from those of intactplants. The assimilate normally diverted to the top in intactplants was distributed between the remaining organs of the detoppedplant. When translocation of assimilates from the primary leaveswas stopped by girdling their petioles, both NAR and NP wereas in untreated control plants after a 2-day period. The assimilatesproduced during that period accumulated in the mesophyll chlorenchymain the form of starch granules. Intact plants supplied withGA3, or IAA, through the primary leaves as well as detoppedplants supplied with IAA through the stump, differed from untreatedcontrol plants in the pattern of distribution of the assimilatesproduced: IAA favoured dry-matter accumulation in the roots, while GA3 favoured the tops. Nevertheless, neither NP, nor NARdiffered significantly from the corresponding controls.

Relationships between iron uptake and iron transport in plants
Summary The uptake of unlabelled iron for 8 h and of Fe59, given as Fe chloride, Fe EDTA and Fe citrate for 15 h, was investigated in young sunflower plants. 1. In all three iron forms the roots absorbed more iron from the nutrient solution with 0.1 ppm Fe than with 1.0 ppm Fe. 2. The roots of those plants, supplied with Fe-chloride contained the highest amount of Fe59. 3. The stem exudate of plants, given a nutrient solution with 0.1 ppm Fe contained less Fe59 than the exudate of plants, grown in a nutrient solution containing 1.0 ppm Fe. 4. No close relationship between the nutrition with the three iron forms and the produced amount of exudate could be established. Furthermore no correlation between the produced amount of exudate and its Fe59 content could be found. 5. The content of Fe59 in the stem exudate was higher when Fe EDTA and Fe citrate were given as compared with Fe chloride.

The effects of foliar sprays of gibberellic acid (GA) on thegrowth of tomato plants cv. Potentate were studied in growthrooms and a glasshouse. Four sprays of GA (5 ppm) increasedleaf area and whole plant weight relative to water controlsgrown at constant temperatures (7, 17, 22, and 27 °C) for12 days, the largest plants being obtained with 5 ppm. Experimentsmade at four photoperiods (5, 10, 15, and 20 h) and at two lightintensities (7000 and 10 750 lx) showed that GA increased leafand whole plant weight at 15 h, leaf area at 10 and 15 h andstem height at all photoperiods; area, height, and weight increaseswere obtained at both light intensities, leaf growth being increasedmore by GA at 7000 lx and stem growth more at 10 750 lx. Four foliar sprays of GA (5 ppm) were combined with N supplementsapplied via leaf and/or root to plants in sand culture. Withlow supply to the roots (20 ppm N) GA failed to increase growth, but increased it at higher levels. Total N in leaf and stemwas increased by GA or by NH4NO3 (10 sprays 280 ppm N) at alllevels of N supplied to roots, but when applied together theeffect on total leaf N was more than additive except at thehighest level (540 ppm) GA increased the concentration of N(as per cent dry matter) in leaf and stem at all levels of Nsupplied to roots. GA and NH4NO3 together resulted in a greateramount and a higher concentration of N in the shoots (and usuallyalso in roots) than did NH4NO3 alone. Leaf thickness (as freshweight/unit area) could only be increased appreciably by sprayingwith a complete nutrient solution which reduced leaf area butnot dry weight. Growth increases induced by GA were detectable 43 days afterthe first of four sprays in the glasshouse and after 30 daysin the growth room. The persistence of GA effects was comparedwith those induced by sprays of NH4NO3.  相似文献

pH Changes Associated with Iron-Stress Response   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
When Fe-inefficient T3238fer and Fe-efficient T3238FER tomatoes were supplied iron, and nitrogen as nitrate, they increased the pH of the nutrient culture. When they were supplied nitrogen as ammonium, they decreased the pH. When Fe supply was limited, Fe-stress response developed in T3238FER that opposed the usual nitrate response and decreased, rather than increased, the pH. A “reductant” which reduced Fe3+ to Fe2+ was released from the roots of these plants and lowered the pH; and there was a tremendous increase in the uptake of Fe. T3238fer did not produce “reductant” in response to Fe-stress; the pH increased, and the plants developed Fe-deficiency when nitrogen was supplied as nitrate. Nitrogen nutrition and iron-stress response are important factors associated with iron chlorosis in plants. Release of hydrogen ions from roots of Fe-stressed plants is caused by more than response to imbalanced uptake of cations and anions.  相似文献

We studied the responses of Xanthium occidentale (Bertol.) (cockleburor Noogoora burr), a noxious weed, to atmospheric CO2 enrichmentand nitrate-N concentrations in the root zone ranging from 0.5to 25 mM. CO2 enrichment (1500 cm3 m–3) increased dry-matterproduction to about the same extent (18 per cent) at all levelsof supplied N: most of the increment in dry matter was distributedequally between leaves and roots so that there was little effecton shoot-to-root dry-weight ratios. Growth was stimulated greatlyby N and plateaued at 12 mM supplied N. Shoot-to-root dry-weightand total N ratios increased with increasing N supply. CO2 enrichmenthad no effect on the total amount of N accumulated by plants, but increased the N-use efficiency of leaves. Enriched plantshad lower concentrations and quantities of N in their leavesthan controls, and therefore lower shoot-to-root total N ratios.Little free NO3 accumulated in organs of control or enrichedplants. NO3 was the major form of N in xylem sap fromdetopped plants at low supplied NO3-N, but amino N was equalin importance at high supplied NO3-N in control and enrichedplants. Concentrations of NO3 were lower in the xylemsap of CO2 enriched plants. It was concluded that the betterN-use efficiency of CO2 enriched plants could result in increasedgrowth of X. occidentale in regions of marginal soil fertilityas atmospheric levels of CO2 increase. Iron toxicity and stress-induced ethylene production in rice leaves   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
The relationship among iron toxicity, bronzing symptom, and stress-induced ethylene production (SEP) was investigated in detached rice (Oryza sativa L.) leaves during the vegetative-ripening stage and in whole plants during the vegetative stage. When Fe2+ (200 mg L-1) was applied to the detached leaf through a transpiration stream, SEP was higher in the first leaf than in the second and third leaves from the top and maximal around the panicle primordia initiation stage. The genotype difference in SEP was more pronounced in the second and third leaves than in the first leaf. Bronzing intensity increased as SEP increased; iron concentration increase during treatment in the tissue did not correlate with bronzing intensity or with SEP among the 16 genotypes tested. When the roots of an intact plant were exposed to 300 mg L-1 of Fe2+ in culture solution little stress-induced ethylene was produced. By partially or totally derooting the plant, however, stress-induced ethylene was evoked, indicating that roots reduced the Fe2+ uptake so that little stress ethylene is produced in the intact plant. Leaf tissue tolerance for Fe2+ may contribute to genotype differences in iron toxicity tolerance of rice plants when roots are injured during transplanting or exposed to toxic substances in the soil.  相似文献

Distinct chemical species of iron were investigated by Mössbauer spectroscopy during iron uptake into cucumber roots grown in unbuffered nutrient solution with or without 57Fe-citrate. Mössbauer spectra of iron deficient roots supplied with 10–500 μM 57Fe-citrate for 30–180 min and 24 h and iron-sufficient ones, were recorded. The roots were analysed for Fe concentration and Fe reductase activity. The Mössbauer parameters in the case of iron-sufficient roots revealed high-spin iron(III) components suggesting the presence of FeIII-carboxylate complexes, hydrous ferric oxides and sulfate–hydroxide containing species. No FeII was detected in these roots. However, iron-deficient roots supplied with 0.5 mM 57FeIII-citrate for 30 min contained significant amount of FeII in a hexaaqua complex form. This is a direct evidence for the Strategy I iron uptake mechanism. Correlation was found between the decrease in Fe reductase activity and the ratio of FeII–FeIII components as the time of iron supply was increased. The data may refer to a higher iron reduction rate as compared to its uptake/reoxidation in the cytoplasm in accordance with the increased reduction rate in iron deficient Strategy I plants.  相似文献

The application of low chromium concentrations (5 M CrCI3)decreased chlorophyll content of iron-deficient plants, butdid not cause visual toxicity symptoms in iron-sufficient plants. No significant plant growth differentials were obtained in responseto the various treatments. Chromium application to iron-deficientPlantago lanceolata L. roots increased the activity of root-associatedFe(lll) reductase. This effect was evident only with acceptorsof the turbo reductase and was not observed in iron-sufficientplants. Chromium accumulated in the roots, but was poorly transportedto the leaves. In split-root experiments, which allowed onlya part of the root system to receive chromium, while the otherportion was grown in iron-free medium, roots subjected to eithertreatment showed an intermediate FeEDTA reductase activity withrespect to non-split control plants. It is concluded that amobile factor from the leaves modulates the degree of expressionof the iron stress response. Possible mechanisms by which chromiumaffects Fe metabolism are discussed. The effect of root temperature and form of inorganic nitrogensupply on in vitro nitrate reductase activity (NRA) was studiedin oilseed rape (Brassica napus L. cv. bien venu). Plants weregrown initially in flowing nutrient solution containing 10 µMNH4NO3 and then supplied with either nitrate or ammonium for15 d at root temperatures of 3, 7, 11 or 17 °C. Shoot temperatureregime was similar for all plants; 20/15 °C, day/night.Root NRA was highest when roots were grown at 3 and 7 °C.In laminae and petioles NRA was highest when roots were 11 or17 °C. The plants supplied with ammonium had much lowerlevels of NRA in roots after 5 d than the plants supplied onlywith nitrate. NRA in the laminae of plants supplied with ammoniumwas low relative to that in plants supplied with nitrate onlywhen root temperature was 11 or 17 °C. Values of the apparent activation energy (Ea) of NR, calculatedfrom the Arrhenius equation, in laminae and petioles were differentfrom roots suggesting difference in enzyme conformation. Evidencethat the temperature at which roots were growing affected Eawas equivocal. The Role of Roots in Control of Bean Shoot Growth   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
CARMI  A.; HEUER  B. 《Annals of botany》1981,48(4):519-528
Restriction of root growth by growing bean plants (Phaseolusvulgaris L.) in very small pots led to the development of dwarfplants. The leaves of those plants were smaller and their internodesshorter than those of control plants which were grown in largerpots and had developed a more extensive root system. A largequantity of starch—much more than in control plants —accumulated in the leaves and shoots of the dwarf plants. Increasingthe amount of minerals which was supplied to the roots, enhancedleaf growth of the control plants but failed to affect the dwarfones, in spite of the fact that in both cases the treatmentincreased the content of N, P and K in all the plant organs. The leaf water content was similar in both treatments, but theleaf water potential was higher in the dwarf plants. Exogenousapplication of gibberellic acid (GA3) to the dwarf plants overcamethe reduction of stem growth completely, and that of the leavespartially. Application of the cytokinin, benzyladenine (BA)did not affect stem growth, but increased that of the primaryleaves. A combined supply of GA2 + BA restored completely thegrowth of the stem and the primary leaves, and partially thatof the trifoliate leaves. It is concluded that a limited rootsystem restricts shoot growth through an hormonal system inwhich at least gibberellins and cytokinins are involved, andthat the dwarfing is not a consequence of mineral or assimilatedeficiency, or due to water stress. Endophyte-infected (E+) tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) plants grown in phosphorus (P) deficient soils accumulate more P in roots and shoots than noninfected isolines. In a growth chamber experiment, four tall fescue genotypes DN2, DN4, DN7, and DN11, infected with their naturally occurring strains of Neotyphodium coenophialum (Morgan-Jones & Gams) Glenn, Bacon & Hanlin, and their noninfected isolines (E-), were cultivated in nutrient solution at two P levels: 31 ppm (P+) and 0 ppm (P-) for 4 wk. The Fe3+ reducing activity of extracellular reductants and intact root tissues, and total phenolic concentration in roots and shoots were measured. Endophyte infection significantly increased Fe3+ reducing activity rate of extracellular reductants (9.6 × 10-3 mol Fe3+ h-1 g-1 root FW) when compared to E- plants (3.9 × 10-3) and Fe3+ reduction rate of intact root tissues (6.16 and 4.48 mol Fe3+ h-1 g-1 root FW, respectively for E+ and E- plants). In response to P deficiency, Fe3+ reduction rate of intact root tissues increased in E+ plants by 375% when compared to E- plants, whereas no significant differences were observed when P was provided. Total phenolic concentration was 20% greater in shoots of E+ plants than in E- plants. In response to P deficiency, total phenolic concentration significantly increased in roots of E+ plants by 7%, and decreased in roots of E- plants by 10%. The most active Fe3+ reducing zones were located along branching of secondary and tertiary roots. The Fe3+ reducing activity on the root surface and total phenolic concentration in roots and shoots increased dramatically in response to endophyte infection, especially under P limiting conditions.Visiting Scientist sponsored by the Fulbright Program No. 21133  相似文献

Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L. plants were grown from seeds in perlite. At the age of 4 weeks (juvenile plants) or 6 weeks (adult plants), they were transferred on nutrient media with different Fe3+ content brought in as Fe2(SO4)3—EDTA complex (pH 6.0): control, iron deficit, and iron “excess”. Adult plants grown in media differing in iron content were subjected to salinity (300 mM NaCl) during the last 8 days of growth. Biochemical analyses were performed after plant fixation in liquid nitrogen; simultaneously, the samples for electron microscopy were taken. Different content of available Fe3+ in medium, especially under salinity conditions, changed sharply the content of chlorophyll and proline, the rate of lipid peroxidation, the level of H2O2, the activities of antioxidant enzymes in the leaves and roots, the number and sizes of plastoglobules, and ferritin formation in plastids. Joint action of salinity and iron deficit enhanced oxidative stress development, whereas iron excess hampered oxidative reaction development, reduced the rate of lipid peroxidation, and increased the chlorophyll content. At iron excess, plastoglobule lysis in plastids did not occur, their number and sizes increased, and ferritin deposits appeared, whereas the latter were absent at iron deficit.  相似文献

Peanut and tomato plants were resistant to 2.0 ppm SO2, whileradish, perilla and spinach plants were sensitive. The amountsof SO2 absorbed by peanut and tomato were obviously less thanthose absorbed by radish, perilla and spinach. Transpirationrates of peanut and tomato began to decrease within 5 min afterthe commencement of SO2 fumigation and reached minimum levels,i.e., 10 and 50% of the initial levels, respectively, after20 min exposure. The rate of perilla did not change for 70 minalter initiation of fumigation, then declined. Those of radishand spinach did not change for about 20 and 30 min, then decreasedgradually. The content of abscisic acid (ABA) was highest inpeanut. The content in tomato was also high, but low in radish, perilla and spinach. Radish supplied with exogenous ABA beganto decrease its transpiration rate immediately after SO2 fumigationand was markedly resistant to SO2. ABA in leaves may controlthe rapid stomatal closure following SO2 fumigation. (Received June 3, 1977; )  相似文献

The significance of nickel (Ni), which is essential for ureaseactivity, for growth and nitrogen (N) metabolism ofBrassicanapusgrown in nutrient solution with either NH4NO3or urea assole N source was investigated. Although Ni contents were below25 µg kg-1d. wt, growth of plants relying on NH4NO3wasnot affected by the Ni status. However, supplementing the growthmedium with 0.04 µMNi enhanced dry matter production ofurea-grown plants significantly. Urease activity was significantlyreduced in leaves and roots of plants grown without supplementaryNi irrespective of N source. Plants grown with urea withoutadditional Ni accumulated large amounts of urea and had loweramino acid contents indicating impaired usage of the N supplied, while those grown with NH4NO3under Ni-deprived conditions accumulatedendogenous urea in their older leaves. It is suggested thatNi may not be strictly essential for plants receiving mineralN, or that the critical level is well below 25 µg kg-1d.wt. These results confirm that Ni is required for urease activityand thus for growth of plants on urea-based media, as well asfor recycling endogenous urea.Copyright 1999 Annals of BotanyCompany. The author studied the effect of different nickel concentrations (0, 0.4, 40 and 80 μM Ni) on the nitrate reductase (NR) activity of New Zealand spinach (Tetragonia expansa Murr.) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Justyna) plants supplied with different nitrogen forms (NO3 –N, NH4 +–N, NH4NO3). A low concentration of Ni (0.4 μM) did not cause statistically significant changes of the nitrate reductase activity in lettuce plants supplied with nitrate nitrogen (NO3 –N) or mixed (NH4NO3) nitrogen form, but in New Zealand spinach leaves the enzyme activity decreased and increased, respectively. The introduction of 0.4 μM Ni in the medium containing ammonium ions as a sole source of nitrogen resulted in significantly increased NR activity in lettuce roots, and did not cause statistically significant changes of the enzyme activity in New Zealand spinach plants. At a high nickel level (Ni 40 or 80 μM), a significant decrease in the NR activity was observed in New Zealand spinach plants treated with nitrate or mixed nitrogen form, but it was much more marked in leaves than in roots. An exception was lack of significant changes of the enzyme activity in spinach leaves when plants were treated with 40 μM Ni and supplied with mixed nitrogen form, which resulted in the stronger reduction of the enzyme activity in roots than in leaves. The statistically significant drop in the NR activity was recorded in the aboveground parts of nickel-stressed lettuce plants supplied with NO3 –N or NH4NO3. At the same time, there were no statistically significant changes recorded in lettuce roots, except for the drop of the enzyme activity in the roots of NO3 -fed plants grown in the nutrient solution containing 80 μM Ni. An addition of high nickel doses to the nutrient solution contained ammonium nitrogen (NH4 +–N) did not affect the NR activity in New Zealand spinach plants and caused a high increase of this enzyme in lettuce organs, especially in roots. It should be stressed that, independently of nickel dose in New Zealand spinach plants supplied with ammonium form, NR activity in roots was dramatically higher than that in leaves. Moreover, in New Zealand spinach plants treated with NH4 +–N the enzyme activity in roots was even higher than in those supplied with NO3 –N.  相似文献

Single plants of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) were grownfrom stolon cuttings rooted in sand. All plants were inoculatedwith Rhizobium trifolii, and for 14 weeks received nutrientsolution containing 0.5 mg N each week, as either ammonium ornitrate. Plants were then leniently defoliated or were leftintact and a 15N-labelled N source was applied at intervalsof 4 d to replace the unlabelled N. Lement defoliation removedfully expanded leaves only; the remaining immature leaves accountedfor 39–44% of the total. At harvests over the following21 d, leaf numbers were counted and dry matter (DM), N contentsand 15N enrichments of individual plant organs were determined. Rates of leaf emergence and expansion were accelerated in defoliatedplants; numbers of young leaves were similar in defoliated andintact plants. Total DM and N content were less in defoliatedthan intact plants and were not affected by form of N supplied.DM of young leaves, growing points and stolons and N contentof young leaves were, however, greater when ammonium ratherthan nitrate N was supplied. Rates of increase in the contentof plant total N were 8.2 ± 1.36 mg N d-1 and 10.2±1.82 mg N d-1 in defoliated and intact plants respectively. The increases were predominantly due to N2 fixation, since recoveryof 15N showed that less than 1% of the increment in plant totalN was assimilated mineral N. Nevertheless, the contributionof mineral N to plant total N was 50% more in defoliated thanin intact plants; higher amounts of mineral N were found particularlyin young leaves and growing points. Partitioning of mineralN to nodulated roots increased over time and was greater whenammonium rather than nitrate N was present. White clover, Trifolium repens L. cv. Seeds used to plant a crop may contain sufficient molybdenum(Mo) to prevent subsequent Mo deficiency in the crop even whenthey are sown on Mo deficient soils. However, little is knownabout either the sources of the Mo acquired by the seed, orthe timing of its redistribution during seed development. Aglasshouse experiment was set up to examine the effect of Mosupply and nitrogen source on the redistribution of Mo withinblack gram, from full flowering to seed maturity. Treatmentscomprised two sources of N (symbiotic N2fixation, NH4NO3), twolevels of Mo supply [nil (-Mo), 0.64 mg Mo kg-1soil (+Mo)] andfour harvests (full flowering, early pod setting, late pod fillingand seed maturity). The redistribution of Mo in black gram wasexamined by determining changes over time in the content ofMo in plant parts at each growth stage. Molybdenum supply and the plant growth stage strongly affectedthe redistribution of Mo to the seed. In -Mo plants relianton symbiotic N2fixation, Mo redistributed from roots, stemsand leaves was the only source of Mo for reproductive developmentsince, from full flowering until maturity, there was no netincrease in whole plant Mo. For pod and early seed development, the roots were the major source of Mo in -Mo plants. After latepod filling, nodules replaced roots as the major source of Mofor seed fill in -Mo plants. By contrast, for +Mo plants relianton symbiotic N2fixation, Mo taken up from the soil after fullflowering could have supplied nearly 50% of the seed Mo. Themajor sources of Mo for seed filling in +Mo plants were middlestem leaves during early podding, and middle stems and pod wallsfrom late podding. Supplying NH4NO3to plants from sowing had little effect on Modistribution or redistribution in +Mo black gram plants. However,in -Mo plants it accelerated the loss of Mo from middle stemsand their leaves compared to nodulated plants. Black gram; Vigna mungo L.
