The metazoan parasite fauna of Hippoglossina macrops (n = 123) from northern Chile (30 degrees S) is quantitatively described for the first time, and the role of host age and sex was evaluated. Twelve parasite species were recovered, including 5 ectoparasites (2 Monogenea, 2 Copepoda and 1 Piscicolidae) and 7 endoparasites (1 Digenea, 3 Cestoda, 2 Acanthocephala, and 1 Nematoda). The copepod Holobomolochus chilensis, the monogenean Neoheterobothrium sp., the adult acanthocephalan Floridosentis sp. and the hirudinean, Gliptonobdella sp. are new geographical and host records. The most prevalent ectoparasitic species were the monogenean, Neoheterobothrium sp. and the copepod, H. chilensis. Among endoparasites, the acanthocephalans Floridosentis sp. and Corynosoma australe were most prevalent and abundant. Prevalence and mean intensity of infection for most parasitic species were not affected by host sex, however the prevalence of Floridosentis sp. was significantly greater in males. Intensity of infection was positively correlated with host age for Neoheterobothrium sp., and negatively correlated for Floridosentis sp. and H. chilensis. The helminth species richness of the host H. macrops was lower compared to related flatfishes from the Northern Hemisphere. The relationship of the helminth fauna of H. macrops, its feeding habits and ecological habitats are discussed.  相似文献

Examination of 290 red rockfish Sebastes capensis from two fishing grounds in northern Chile (Coquimbo 71°30' W; 30°0' S and Antofagasta 70°40' W; 23°30' S) revealed 8770 metazoan parasites, belonging to 18 taxa: Udonella caligorum (Udonellidae); Interniloculus chilensis , Paramicrocotyle sp. and Neobenedenia melleni (Monogenea); larval Gnathia sp., Cirolana sp. and Rocinela sp. (Isopoda); Helicometrina nimia , Diphtherostomum sp., Lecithochirium sp. and Pseudopecoelus sp. (Digenea); Ascarophis sebastodis , Anisakis sp. and larval Hysterothylacium sp. (Nematoda); Caligus cheilodactylus , Lepeophtheirus chilensis and Trifur tortuosus (Copepoda); larval Corynosoma australe (Acanthocephala). Ten species were found only in Coquimbo and three were found only in Antofagasta, species common to both localities were Pseudopecoelus sp., C. australe , Anisakis sp. and A. sebastodis . Evidence, based on qualitative differences between the parasite faunas of the red rockfish, suggests the existence of two discrete stocks.  相似文献

We examined the metazoan parasite fauna of the bigeye flounder, Hippoglossina macrops, in a latitudinal gradient of the southeastern Pacific (ca. 25 degrees S-33 degrees S) to assess whether their parasites show latitudinal and/or biogeographical patterns, and to determine if these patterns agree well with those observed for free-living organisms. In total, 331 fish from 6 localities were analyzed. Eighteen parasite species, including 5 ecto- and 13 endoparasites, were found in the bigeye flounder. Neoheterobothrium chilensis, Floridosentis sp., and Corynosoma australe were the most prevalent parasite species. Ecto- and endoparasites of H. macrops showed different latitudinal patterns. Only endoparasite species show a distributional pattern concordant with biogeographic areas recognized for free-living organisms; this finding was supported by cluster analyses showing 2 major divisions. The first joined the most northern localities (25 degrees S-26 degrees S), and the second consisted of 2 subgroups: (1) 28 degrees S-30 degrees S, and (2) 31 degrees S-32 degrees S. A multivariate analysis of infracommunities showed significant differences in the parasitic load of H. macrops from different latitudes. The latitudinal differences in the prevalence and abundance of the parasites might be explained by differing oceanographic conditions in water masses. These physical conditions could affect the dispersal ability of the infective stages of ecto-parasites, and produce zoogeographical breaks that could affect the distribution of intermediate hosts (invertebrate and vertebrate prey), subsequently affecting the transmission of endoparasites.  相似文献

Little is known about the diversity of non-geniculate coralline red algae (Rhodophyta, Corallinophycidae) from deep waters in Brazil. Most surveys undertaken in this country have been carried out in shallow waters. In 1994, however, the REVIZEE program surveyed the sustainable living resources potential of the Brazilian exclusive economic zone to depths of 500?m. In the present study, the rhodolith-forming coralline algae from the continental shelf of Espírito Santo State were identified. Samples were taken from 54 to 60?m depth by dredging during ship cruises in 1997. Three rhodolith-forming species were found: Spongites yendoi (Foslie) Chamberlain, Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff and Lithothamnion glaciale Kjellman. These records extend the distribution ranges of these species into Brazilian waters and extend the depth distribution of non-geniculate coralline red algae into Brazilian water to 58?m.  相似文献

The parasite communities of Nezumia pulchella across its geographical range in the south-eastern Pacific were described, from 217 fish captured from four localities in northern and central Chile (24° S to 33° S). Five ectoparasites and 13 endoparasites were recorded and the highest prevalence and intensity of infection was found for the copepods Jusheyhoea macrura and Clavella sp. 1, for the monogenean Diclidophora sp. and for the larval acanthocephalan Corynosoma australe . Parasite species richness decreased with latitude. Multivariate discriminant analysis and correspondence analysis supported the use of parasites of N. pulchella to discriminate populations of this host, suggesting the existence of three well-defined host populations in the geographical range examined. Jusheyhoea macrura , C. australe , Lophoura sp., Diclidophora sp., Capillaria sp. and Proleptus sp. were the most important species for discriminant analysis.  相似文献

Studies of geographical patterns of diversity have focused largely on compiling and analysing data to evaluate alternative hypotheses for the near‐universal decrease in species richness from the equator to the poles. Valuable insights into the mechanisms that promote diversity can come from studies of other patterns, such as variation in species distributions with elevation in terrestrial systems or with depth in marine systems. To obtain such insights, we analysed and interpreted data on species diversity, depth of occurrence and body size of pelagic fishes along an oceanic depth gradient. We used a database on pelagic marine fishes native to the north‐east Pacific Ocean between 40°N and 50°N. We used data from the Pacific Rim Fisheries Program that were obtained from commercial, management and scientific surveys between 1999 and 2000. Depth of occurrence and maximum body length were used to assess the distributions of 409 species of pelagic fishes along a depth gradient from 0 to 8000 m. A presence–absence matrix was used to classify the depth range of each species into 100‐m intervals. Atmar & Patterson's (1995 ) software was used to quantify the degree of nestedness of species distributions. Pelagic fish species diversity decreased steeply with increasing depth; diversity peaked at less than 200 m and more than half of the species had mean depths of occurrence between 0 and 300 m. The distribution of species showed a very strong nested subset pattern along the depth gradient. Whereas species with narrow ranges were generally restricted to shallow waters, wide‐ranging species occurred from near the surface to great depths. The relationship between maximum body size and mean depth range differed between teleost and elasmobranch fishes: being positive for teleosts, but negative for elasmobranches. Results support hypotheses that some combination of high productivity and warm temperature promote high species diversity, and reject those that would attribute the pattern of species richness to the mid‐domain effect, habitat area, or environmental constancy. The data provided a clear example of Rapoport's rule, a negative correlation between average depth range and species diversity.  相似文献

Examination of 450 specimens of Macruronus magellanicus from two fishing grounds in southern Chile (Talcahuano: 36°40'S, Punta Arenas: 54° S) revealed 24 205 metazoan parasites, belonging to 15 taxa with low specificity: Chondracanthus australis and Neobrachiella sp. (Copepoda); Elytrophalloides oatesi, Gonocerca phycidis, Derogenes varicus and Brachyphallus parvus , (Digenea); Hepatoxylon trichiuri, Scolex pleuronectis, Clestobothrium crassiceps, Grillotia dollfusi , Pseudophyllidea gen. sp. (Cestoda); Anisakidae, Cucullanus sp. (Nematoda), Corynosoma australe and Acanthocephala gen. sp. (Acanthocephala). The list includes parasites that are common to other merluccids from the zone. The parasitological evidence does not suggest the existence of two discrete stocks, but the existence of a migratory process from south to north.  相似文献

Synopsis Diel and spring/summer space-use and feeding patterns were investigated in an assemblage dominated by five fish species occupying the offshore waters of Lake Opinicon, a shallow mesotrophic lake in southeastern Ontario. We assessed fish distribution and diel movement in May and July through the use of gill nets set at various depths in 1.5–7.0 m depth contour zones, supplemented by observations of fish reaction to the nets. Golden shiners and alewives occupied the upper part of the water column, with the former concentrated at the littoral zone-open water interface, and the latter in the open water. Yellow perch occupied the lower part of the water column in all depth contours. Bluegills were abundant in the upper to midwater depths in all contour zones; black crappies were concentrated in the 2.5–3.5 m zones. All of these species showed either a diel or a spring-summer change in distribution pattern. Bluegills were more abundant in offshore locations in July, whereas golden shiners and yellow perch were more abundant onshore in May. Alewives and black crappies showed distinct diel movements in July, as they were largely absent from the study area during the day, but returned at night to feed. In general, there was more spatial separation among the five species in July than in May.Patterns of spatial distribution among the species generally corresponded with the type and variety of prey consumed, and with diel movement of prey in the case of water column feeders. Other factors that apparently affected spatial distribution and seasonal shifts in this assemblage were risk of predation (golden shiner), spawning activity (alewife), and a decline in prey abundance from spring to summer (bluegill and yellow perch).  相似文献

Defining the location and habitat characteristics of areas of aggregation of Atlantic shark species has been identified as an important information need for current and future management efforts. The primary objective of this project was to investigate the depths and temperatures of the waters occupied by large juvenile sandbar sharks of the northwest Atlantic population during the winter months and the overwintering localities of these animals using a fishery independent method. During the summer of 2003, 21 sandbar sharks captured in the Eastern Shore of Virginia bays and lagoons were outfitted with satellite transmitters that were programmed to detach during the following winter. The sharks occurred in significantly colder and deeper waters during the winter period than during the summer nursery period with a mean depth and temperature recorded by the transmitters during the winter period of 19.9°C and 20.8 m and a mean depth and temperature recorded during the summer period of 24.0°C and 4.3 m. Despite this decrease in temperature and increase in depth of occurrence, the sharks remained in relatively warm waters and shallow depths throughout the overwintering period. Satellite pop-off locations during the overwintering period were concentrated in central North Carolina coastal waters, where a unique combination of shallow depths and warm temperatures may contribute to the survivorship of these animals while they overwinter in these waters.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Distributions of benthic diatoms and benthic floc in Lake Sibaya were examined to determine if preferential grazing by juvenile Sarotherodon mossambicus on benthic detrital aggregate in shallow water maximized diatom concentrations in the diet of the fish. Between 0.1 and 12.0 m depth, the range of diatom densities was 1–60 × 104 cells cm−2 with high but extremely variable densities above 3 m and consistently low densities at greater depths. Light intensity and burial by wave action appear to be primary factors affecting diatom abundance, but the effect of unidentified factors causing local patchiness is also evident. Substrate stabilization by diatoms was observed between 0.3 and 1.8 m depth. Weight of benthic detrital aggregate generally increased with depth such that diatom concentrations were variable above 3 m but were extremely low in benthic detrital aggregate at greater depths. Comparison of diatom concentrations in fish stomachs and benthic detrital aggregate shows that within the shallow waters, fish do not selectively graze those areas richest in diatoms.  相似文献

The colonial ascidian Didemnum candidum (Savigny) is more abundant at shallow depths on floating docks than at greater depths along pilings in Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii. To compare the effects of selective settlement and postsettlement mortality on adult distribution, I determined if settlement was nonrandom relative to depth, if differences in adult abundance were responsible for the depth distribution of settlement, and if juvenile mortality varied with depth. A plankton pump was used to measure variation in larval abundance with depth. Acrylic settling plates were suspended at different depths and sampled nondestructively to measure settlement intensity and juvenile mortality. Settlement and mortality of the didemnid ascidians Diplosoma listerianum Milne-Edwards and Diplosoma sp. were also measured in the field and compared to that of D. candidum. Settlement of D. candidum was indeed nonrandom over depth. Both planktonic larvae and settled juvenils were more numerous at 0.5 than 3 or m. Settlement intensity on vertical plates was greatest within 1–2 cm of the water surface in the laboratory and within 2–3 cm in the field. Directly adjacent to the floating dock, where adults were equally abundant, settlement on horizontal plates was greater at shallow depths, suggesting directed movement of larvae upward. However, the ratio of settled juveniles to planktonic larvae (number of settlers: number of larvae) did not significantly differ with depth, suggesting that larvae were not more likely to settle at a particular depth. Settlement of the Diplosoma species was also heaviest near the surface. Juvenile mortality was greater at 0.5 than at 3 or 6 m for both D. candidum and the Diplosoma species. Experimental settlement showed that mortality, per se, of D. candidum was independent of depth. Rather, mortality was density-dependent, and the higher mortality near the surface was due to the greater number of larvae settling there. At this location, nonrandom settlement appears to determine the adult distribution of D. candidum, despite greater juvenile mortality at shallow depths. The pattern of settlement over depth is largely determined by adult proximity, rather than active larval behavior.  相似文献

Coral reefs are subjected to unprecedented levels of disturbance with population growth and climate change combining to reduce standing coral cover and stocks of reef fishes. Most of the damage is concentrated in shallow waters (<30 m deep) where humans can comfortably operate and where physical disturbances are most disruptive to marine organisms. Yet coral reefs can extend to depths exceeding 100 m, potentially offering refuge from the threats facing shallower reefs. We deployed baited remote underwater stereo-video systems (stereo-BRUVs) at depths of 10–90 m around the southern Mariana Islands to investigate whether fish species targeted by fishing in the shallows may be accruing benefits from being at depth. We show that biomass, abundance and species richness of fishery-targeted species increased from shallow reef areas to a depth of 60 m, whereas at greater depths, a lack of live coral habitat corresponded to lower numbers of fish. The majority of targeted species were found to have distributions that ranged from shallow depths (10 m) to depths of at least 70 m, emphasising that habitat, not depth, is the limiting factor in their vertical distribution. While the gradient of abundance and biomass versus depth was steepest for predatory species, the first species usually targeted by fishing, we also found that fishery-targeted herbivores prevailed in similar biomass and species richness to 60 m. Compared to shallow marine protected areas, there was clearly greater biomass of fishery-targeted species accrued in mesophotic depths. Particularly some species typically harvested by depth-limited fishing methods (e.g., spearfishing), such as the endangered humphead wrasse Cheilinus undulatus, were found in greater abundance on deeper reefs. We conclude that mesophotic depths provide essential fish habitat and refuge for fishery-targeted species, representing crucial zones for fishery management and research into the resilience of disturbed coral reef ecosystems.  相似文献

Little is known about species composition, distribution, and abundance of pelagic fish in the U.S. portion of the Beaufort Sea continental shelf and slope. To inventory the community and describe pelagic fish distributions relative to water characteristics, a systematic survey was conducted in August 2008. Acoustics (38 kHz), midwater trawling, and CTD casts were used to sample water depths from 20 to 500 m. Age-1+ polar cod (Boreogadus saida) was the dominant fish species, with peak densities of 155,000 # ha−1 at bottom depths of 100–350 m. Age-0 fish (polar cod, sculpin (Cottidae family), and eelblenny (Lumpenus sp.)), dominated the pelagic biomass at bottom depths between 20 and 75 m, with peak densities of 160,000 # ha−1, but were also found in surface waters at bottom depths >75 m. Age-1+ polar cod were associated with cold, saline waters likely of Chukchi Sea origin and mirrored published foraging distributions for beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas). Conversely, age-0 fish were found in warm, fresher water, likely of ice melt and/or riverine origin, throughout the study area. This study provides a necessary baseline for the development of Arctic assessment surveys and management plans for polar cod.  相似文献

The vertical zonation and community structure of Mediterraneancopepods collected from the surface to 3000 m in the TyrrhenianSea were examined for different depth intervals and periodsof the year. Three major copepod communities, identified usingmultivariate analysis techniques, differed mainly in speciescomposition and less in depth distribution from those reportedfor the open ocean. The surface community (0–100 m) includednumerous offshore species comprising relatively uniform butquantitatively poor populations. These included a number ofcoastal forms that dominated offshore waters at certain periodsof the year. The midwater community (100–600 m) consistedof species that were primarily confined to intermediate waters,of which few underwent extensive vertical migrations. The deepcommunity (>600 m) consisted essentially of intermediate-water species with ample distribution ranges that formed a truebathypelagic community at these depths. Temporal changes incommunity structure affected only surface populations and diminishedvery rapidly with increasing depth. Species composition in deeplayers was not affected by did and seasonal changes. Biomassdistribution patterns indicated that the low quantities of planktonrecorded for deep layers were probably related to low surfacestanding crops for this region. The relationship between surfaceand deep biomass values appeared similar to those reported foropen ocean systems suggesting that the efficiency of the deepMediterranean subsystem was not offset by the absence of a truebathypelagic fauna.  相似文献

Reciprocal adaptation between interacting species may occur in some regions (coevolutionary ‘hotspots’) and not others (‘coldspots’). In a previous study, we found hotspots and coldspots along a continuous depth gradient in two different New Zealand lakes. Specifically, we found that Microphallus sp. trematodes were locally adapted to Potamopyrgus antipodarum snails collected from shallow‐water margins of the lakes, but not to snails collected from deep‐water habitats. As sexual snails were more common in the shallow water, and asexual snails more common in the deep water, the results were also consistent with the Red Queen hypothesis, which predicts that sex should be favored in environments with coevolving parasites. Here, we repeated our earlier experiment to determine whether the results are robust over time (two years) and space (three lakes). We also tested whether our measure of parasite local adaptation was sensitive to parasite dose. Our results suggest that shallow‐water habitats are temporally stable coevolutionary hotspots, and that the pattern is spatially robust over three lake populations. We also found that, while parasite dose affects the magnitude of local adaptation, it does not obscure the signature of local adaptation in this snail–trematode system.  相似文献

Approximately one quarter of zooxanthellate coral species have a depth distribution from shallow waters (<30 m) down to mesophotic depths of 30-60 m. The deeper populations of such species are less likely to be affected by certain environmental perturbations, including high temperature/high irradiance causing coral bleaching. This has led to the hypothesis that deep populations may serve as refuges and a source of recruits for shallow reef habitats. The extent of vertical connectivity of reef coral species, however, is largely unquantified. Using 10 coral host microsatellite loci and sequences of the host mtDNA putative control region, as well as ribosomal DNA (rDNA) ITS2 sequences of the coral's algal endosymbionts (Symbiodinium), we examine population structure, connectivity and symbiont specificity in the brooding coral Seriatopora hystrix across a depth profile in both northwest (Scott Reef) and northeast Australia (Yonge Reef). Strong genetic structuring over depth was observed in both regions based on the microsatellite loci; however, Yonge Reef exhibited an additional partitioning of mtDNA lineages (associated with specific symbiont ITS2 types), whereas Scott Reef was dominated by a single mtDNA lineage (with no apparent host-symbiont specificity). Evidence for recruitment of larvae of deep water origin into shallow habitats was found at Scott Reef, suggesting that recovery of shallow water habitats may be aided by migration from deep water refuges. Conversely, no migration from the genetically divergent deep slope populations into the shallow habitats was evident at Yonge Reef, making recovery of shallow habitats from deeper waters at this location highly unlikely.  相似文献

Lake Abijata lies in a shallow depression (maximum depth 8–9.5 m); the water is green with phytoplankton and it supports large fish and bird communities. Lake Shala lies in a deep caldera (maximum depth reputedly 260 m); phytoplankton is sparse and fish and bird communities scanty.Lakes Abijata and Shala, sampled in January, 1985, had conductivities of 14 000 and 21 000 microSiemens cm-1 at 25 °C respectively, mainly due to high sodium, carbonate and chloride ions. Calcium concentrations are very low.The benthic fauna was studied with an Ekman grab to a depth of 8.5 m in Abijata and 15.5 m in Shala and was found to be dense in both lakes but varying greatly in composition at different depths. In Abijata the benthos consisted mainly of Ostracoda and Chironomidae, and in Shala mainly of Tubificidae, Ostracoda and Chironomidae. There were very few Nematoda. No true halophilic species were found but the community consisted of euryhaline forms found also in non-saline waters. Predatory invertebrates were absent and many of the dominant species, notably of the Chironomidae, were different from those of non-saline lakes nearby.  相似文献

Diel patterns in the spatial distribution of rainbow and cutthroat trout were studied with stationary acoustic transducers, gillnets, and setlines in Spada Lake during summer thermal stratification. Four diel periods (dawn, 03.00–07.00 hours; day, 07.00–19.00 hours; dusk, 19.00–23.00 hours; night, 23.00–03.00 hours) and two horizontal strata (nearshore, bottom depth < 8 m; offshore, bottom depth > 8 m) were identified from fish distribution patterns. During the day, trout were almost exclusively offshore and their densities were highest at intermediate depths of the water column (4–16 m). From dusk to dawn, trout were in intermediate and shallow depths (0–4 m) of the offshore and nearshore strata. The mean depth of capture was significantly deeper for cutthroat trout (9 m) than for rainbow trout (3m). Both species primarily inhabited the epilimnion and metalimnion where temperature ranged from 22.5 to 11.0°C and were nearly absent from deeper, cooler waters. Dissolved oxygen levels ranging from 3.9 to 8.6 mg/l did not seem to influence trout distributions.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of mesozooplankton in the centraland eastern Arabian Sea was investigated during the winter monsoonin 1995. Samples were analysed from discrete depth zones definedaccording to oxygen and temperature profiles of the water column.Zooplankton had higher standing stock in the mixed layer comparedto the strata below. The mixed layer had 78.5% of the totalcolumn biomass, while the deepest (500–1000 m) layer accountedfor only 0.9%. The stratum between 500 and 1000 m had the lowestabundance of copepods as well as other zooplankton. A notablefeature was that zooplankton biomass and density did not showmuch variations between coastal and offshore regions. Copepodawere the dominant group. Herbivores were generally more abundantat all depths. A total of 94 species of calanoid copepods wereidentified. Based on vertical distributions, they were assignedto four groups: (i) species restricted to the upper 200 m; (ii)predominantly surface-living species with tails to deeper waters;(iii) sparser deeper-living species generally confined below300 m; (iv) species occurring throughout the water column. Diversitywas fairly high in all strata with equitability being higherin the deeper strata.  相似文献

Six hundred and thirty nine autochthonous fish were examined in 1986-1987 in search for Camallanus corderoi infection on different biotopes from Valdivia River basin (between 39 degrees 30'-40 degrees 00'S, 73 degrees 30'-71 degrees 45' W). Brachigalaxias bullocki, Galaxias maculatus, Galaxias platei, Aplochiton taeniatus, Cheirodon australe, Basilichthys australis and Cauque mauleanum are new hosts for C. corderoi. Infection by C. corderoi in fish is acquired by ingestion of infected copepods and prevalence and intensity of infection showed differences between host fish and biotopes. In general, infrapopulations of C. corderoi showed overdispersion in different hosts.  相似文献
