Fruit-set values for 447 species of plants were examined for variations due to compatibility, breeding system, life form, latitude, type of fruit, and type of pollination. The results indicate significant differences between self-compatible and self-incompatible species in terms of 1) average fruit-set and 2) the effect of the independent variables. Breeding system, life form, and latitude were found to be the only significant independent variables for self-incompatible species, while fruit type and latitude were found to be significant for self-compatible plants. Although latitude was a significant variable for self-compatible and self-incompatible species, it was correlated with other variables and may actually have no direct effect on fruit-flower ratios in plants. Hypotheses explaining the effect of the significant independent variables on fruit-flower ratios were then examined and, when possible, predictions were tested. The results indicate that the selective-abortion and bet-hedging hypotheses may be important factors contributing to the low fruit-set in self-incompatible plants, while the male-function hypothesis may explain the lower fruit-flower ratios in hermaphrodites.  相似文献

Polysaccharide-protein gums are complex polymers with many applications in emulsion and emulsion-based products. It is crucial to enclose a concept on understanding of functional properties of polysaccharide-protein biopolymer in order to select the appropriate one based on the application scope. The main objective of the current study was to investigate the effect of three extraction variables on the surface activity, particle uniformity, apparent viscosity, and protein content of a natural polysaccharide-protein biopolymer from durian fruit seed. Three extraction variables namely water: seed (W/S) ratio (20:1?C60:1), temperature (25.0?C85.0?°C) and pH (4.0?C10.0) were considered as independent variables. The results indicated that durian seed gum induced very low viscosity (0.93?C4.98?mPa.s) with pseudoplastic rheological behavior in the aqueous system. The current study revealed that the extraction variables had the most significant (p?<?0.05) effect on the emulsifying surface activity of the natural biopolymer from durian fruit seed. This might be due to the significant (p?<?0.05) effect of the proteineous constituent present in the chemical structure of the biopolymer from durian fruit seed. The aqueous extraction variables showed the most and least significant (p?<?0.05) effect on the specific surface area and protein content, respectively. Among all extraction variables, W/S ratio and pH exhibited the highest and lowest significant (p?<?0.05) effect on the physicochemical and functional properties of the natural biopolymer from durian fruit seed.  相似文献

At three stages of fruit ripening of three euonymus species (Euonymus sp.), growth parameters, the development of morphologo-anatomical structure, and the accumulation of neutral acylglycerols (NAG) of fatty acids were studied. It was established that, in all species studied, in the cells of endosperm and cotyledons, as well as in arillus cells, small oleosomes of similar size were formed, whereas in Euonymus europaeus and E. maximowiczianus large oleosomes differing in their sizes also appeared. Independently of fruit age, dry weight of seeds exceeded that of arils by several times. At the determination of separate NAG classes: TAG (1,2,3-triacyl-sn-glycerols) and acDAG (3-acetyl-1,2-diacyl-sn-glycerols), it was shown that the absolute content of acDAG in seeds was 1.5 orders of magnitude higher than that of TAG; in contrast, in arils TAG were much more abundant than acDAG. Euonymus species differed markedly in the growth pattern and NAG accumulation in seeds and arils.  相似文献

Clementine ( Citrus reticulata [Hort.] Ex. Tanaka cv. Oroval) is a self-incompatible mandarin with a slow rate of fruit growth and high percentage of fruit abscission. Seedless Satsuma ( Citrus unshiu [Mak] Marc. cv. Clausellina) shows natural parthenocarpy and higher fruit set. Application of 25 μg fruit−1 of paclobutrazol (PP333), an inhibitor of gibberellin biosynthesis, reduced the rate of growth and accelerated fruit abscission in both varieties. In contrast, gibberellin A3 (GA3) stimulated fruit growth only in the self-incompatible mandarin. Clementine fruits, in the absence of pollination, showed an approximately 2-fold transient increase in the free abscisic acid (ABA) content shortly after petal fall. In Satsuma, a very small accumulation of ABA was detected. Paclobutrazol treatment induced a 3-fold increase in ABA in Satsuma fruits but did not substantially affect the pattern of ABA accumulation in Clementine. In this variety, GA3 suppressed the ABA increase observed in untreated fruits. These effects were observed 24 h after treatment. However, in Satsuma fruits, the effect of GA3 on the ABA content was negligible. In addition, a comparative analysis of growing and non-growing fruits of Clementine showed that ABA, on a per unit weight basis, was always higher in the non-growing fruits. Treatment with 85 μM fluridone, an inhibitor of carotenoid biosynthesis and thus indirectly of ABA, delayed fruit abscission in Clementine, but also decreased fruit growth. Collectively, these observations indicate a relationship between high ABA content and a reduced rate of fruit growth and an acceleration of fruit abscission.  相似文献

The aim of this investigation was to assess the nutritional and health properties of Mon Thong durian cultivar at different stages of ripening. The assessment was carried out in vitro and in vivo. The contents of dietary fibers, minerals and trace metals at different stages of ripening were comparable. Total polyphenols (mgGAE/100 g FW) and flavonoids (mg CE/100 gFW) in ripe durian (358.8 +/- 31.4 and 95.4 +/- 9.3) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than in mature (216.1 +/- 1 and 39.9 +/- 3.8) and overripe (283.3 +/- 26.2 and 53.5 +/- 4.9). Antioxidant capacity (muMTE/100 g FW) in total polyphenol extracts of ripe durian measured by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) and [2,2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)] (ABTS) assays (259.4 +/- 23.6 and 2341.8 +/- 93.2) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that of mature (151.6 +/- 15.2 and 1394.6 +/- 41.5) and overripe (201.7 +/- 19.4 and 1812.2 +/- 61.4) samples. The correlation coefficients between the bioactive compounds in different stages of ripening and their antioxidant capacities were high (R;{2} = 0.99). Then 35 male Wistar rats were divided into 5 dietary groups each of 7 and named Control, Chol, Chol/Mature, Chol/Ripe and Chol/Overripe. During 30 days of the experiment the rats of all 5 groups were fed basal diet (BD), which included wheat starch, casein, soybean oil, vitamin and mineral mixtures. The rats of the Control group were fed a BD only. To the BD of the Chol group was added 1% of cholesterol. The BD of the Chol/Mature, Chol/Ripe and Chol/Overripe groups was supplemented with 1% of cholesterol and 5% of the mature, ripe and overripe durian as freeze-dried powder, respectively. Diets containing ripe and to a lesser degree mature and overripe durian significantly hindered the rise in plasma lipids and also hindered a decrease in plasma antioxidant activity. The nitrogen retention in rats of the Chol/Ripe group was significantly higher (63.6%, P < 0.05) than in other diet groups and the level of the plasma glucose remained normal. A decrease in fibrinogen fraction with ripe durian included in rat's diets was shown by electrophoretic separation. These changes were detected mostly in the low molecular weight proteins of rat's serum. Histological examination of aorta showed only slight differences in the tissue. In conclusion, ripe durian contains higher quantity of bioactive compounds, has higher antioxidant capacity and nutritional value. It positively affects the plasma lipid profile, the plasma glucose and the antioxidant activity in rats fed cholesterol enriched diets. Therefore, the ripe durian supplemented diet could be beneficial for patient suffering from hypercholesterolemia and diabetes mellitus. <  相似文献

Fruit size within a tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) truss depends on both fruit position in the truss and the time of pollination among fruits. In the natural pollination sequence a difference of 5 days in the pollination of proximal and distal flowers results in significant final size differences between proximal and distal fruits. These final size differences were eliminated when all flowers were pollinated simultaneously. At anthesis proximal ovaries have higher cell numbers than distal ovaries but the cell division activity and cell enlargement in both positions was similar in the first 10 days of fruit growth. Simultaneous pollination resulted in lower cell numbers in proximal but higher cell numbers in distal fruits compared to control fruits.Hormone levels in different sized fruits were measured using radioimmunoassays. Cytokinin concentration during the cell division period indicated a possible role in the regulation of cell division. With other hormones no obvious correlations were found. The results are discussed in relation to factors determining final fruit size in tomato.  相似文献

Bacterial blight caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. punicae is a devastating disease causing huge economic losses in major pomegranate growing areas. Thus, this study has been undertaken to assess the effect of plant growth regulators (PGRs) and signal molecules on disease incidence of bacterial blight in addition to its impact on yield and productivity under field condition in disease endemic area. Considering the environmental concern for reduction in synthetics and antibiotics, PGRs offers cost‐effective and an eco‐friendly schedule for management of this disease. Foliar application of ethylene at 200 ppm resulted in significant reduction in disease incidence in leaves (from 33.01% to 4.87%), fruits (from 25.77% to 2.05%) and twigs (from 1.76% and 0.97% to 0%), as compared to untreated plants. Treatment with salicylic acid and paclobutrazol also resulted in reduction of disease incidence. Further, higher accumulation of total phenols and anthocyanin content in rind as well as in arils was observed in ethylene treatment with enhanced fruit yield in pomegranate plants. The enhanced disease tolerance by recording less disease incidence with increased accumulation of defence compounds like phenols and anthocyanins by ethylene, salicylic acid and paclobutrazol treatments resulted in improving fruit yield and quality of pomegranate fruits. Thus, judicious application of PGRs and signal molecules contributed for induction of resistance while improving developmental and reproductive parameters of pomegranate and thus could be a viable option for their synergistic use in pomegranate farming.  相似文献

A program of experimental field pollinations was carried out on 14 species of woody Rubiaceae in a Costa Rican wet forest in order to test for the presence of self-incompatibility systems. Species of Cephaelis, Coussarea, Faramea, Hamelia, Posoqueria, Psychotria, Rudgea, and Warszewiczia were investigated in the study. Ten of the species are distylous, and of these, nine were found to be self-incompatible. The site of the incompatibility barrier varied between and within species. Short style plants always had stigmatic inhibition of pollen tubes following self and intraform pollinations, but the site of the rejection response in long style plants was quite variable. In several species, pollen tubes, resulting from incompatible pollinations of the long style flowers, penetrated to the base of the style. Fruit set was followed in two of these species, and despite deep penetration of self and intraform pollen tubes in the long style morph, only interform pollinations resulted in fruit set. Four of the species tested are florally monomorphic and each was found to be self-incompatible on the basis of fruit set patterns. Pollen tubes in the styles of self-pollinated flowers of two of the monomorphic species, penetrated to the ovary, but no fruits resulted from selfpollinations.  相似文献

The effect of a number of experimental handpollination regimens on the numbers of seeds set by Blandfordia nobilis flowers was assessed. Individuals were found to be self-incompatible and to require pollinator visits to set fruit. Pollen limited the female component of reproduction in the two populations studied while pollen source did not have a significant effect on the numbers of seeds set. Experiments using a stuffed honeyeater indicated that maximal seed set could be achieved after just one probe by the pollinator. Appreciable heterogeneity in flowering phenology, the number of seeds naturally setting and the number of seeds setting as a result of hand-pollinations existed within a small area across a single flowering season.  相似文献

Summary One possible consequence of low population density, particularly in self-incompatible plants, is reproductive failure. I surveyed seed set per flower in two populations of the self-incompatible annual Diplotaxis erucoides (Brassicaceae) in Jerusalem, Israel. Widely spaced plants had lower fruit set and fewer seeds per filled silique than did plants growing close to conspecific neighbors. Such density-dependent reproductive success could help explain the maintanence of spatial patchiness in plant populations, and could also have implications for population dynamics of rare species.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Selection may favour a partial or complete loss of self-incompatibility (SI) if it increases the reproductive output of individuals in the presence of low mate availability. The reproductive output of individuals varying in their strength of SI may also be affected by population density via its affect on the spatial structuring and number of S-alleles in populations. Modifiers increasing levels of self-compatibility can be selected when self-compatible individuals receive reproductive compensation by, for example, increasing seed set and/or when they become associated with high fitness genotypes.

Methods

The effect of variation in the strength of SI and scrub density (low versus high) on seed set, seed germination and inbreeding depression in seed germination (δgerm) was investigated in the partially self-incompatible species Flourensia cernua by analysing data from self-, cross- and open-pollinated florets.

Key Results

Examination of 100 plants in both high and low scrub densities revealed that 51% of plants were strongly self-incompatible and 49 % varied from being self-incompatible to self-compatible. Seed set after hand cross-pollination was higher than after open-pollination for self-incompatible, partially self-incompatible and self-compatible plants but was uniformly low for strongly self-incompatible plants. Strongly self-incompatible and self-incompatible plants exhibited lower seed set, seed germination and multiplicative female fitness (floral display × seed set × seed germination) in open-pollinated florets compared with partially self-incompatible and self-compatible plants. Scrub density also had an effect on seed set and inbreeding depression: in low-density scrubs seed set was higher after open-pollination and δgerm was lower.

Conclusions

These data suggest that (a) plants suffered outcross pollen limitation, (b) female fitness in partially self-incompatible and self-compatible plants is enhanced by increased mate-compatibility and (c) plants in low-density scrubs received higher quality pollen via open-pollination than plants in high-density scrubs.Key words: Flourensia cernua, population density, seed set, seed germination, female fitness, partial self-incompatibility, Mapimí Biosphere Reserve  相似文献

Differences in reproductive demands between the sexes of dioecious plants could cause divergence in physiology between the sexes. We found that the reproductive effort of female Silene latifolia plants increased to more than twice that of male plants or female plants that were prevented from setting fruit by lack of pollination after 4 weeks of flowering. Whole-plant source/sink ratios of pollinated females were significantly lower than those of males or unpollinated females because of investment in fruit. We hypothesized that these differences in source/sink ratio between the sexes and within females, depending on pollination, would lead to differences in leaf photosynthetic rates. Within females, we found that photosynthetic capacity was consistent with measurement of whole-plant source/sink ratio. Females that were setting fruit had 30% higher light-saturated photosynthetic rates by 28 days after flowering than females that were not setting fruit. Males, however, had consistently higher photosynthetic rates than females from 10 days after flowering onwards. Males also had approximately twice the dark respiration rates of fruiting females. We found that female reproductive structures are longer-lived and contribute more carbon to their own support than male reproductive structures. Despite the higher rates of leaf dark respiration and lower calyx photosynthetic rates, males fix more carbon than do females. We conclude that females have a sink-regulated mechanism of photosynthesis that allows them to respond to variations in fruit set. This mechanism is not, however, sufficient to explain why male S. latifolia plants have higher rates of photosynthesis, higher source/sink ratios, and lower reproductive allocation, but fail to grow larger than female plants.  相似文献

Durian is economically important for local livelihoods in Indonesia. Our study investigated the identity of pollinators of semi‐wild durian and subsequently estimated the economic contribution of these pollination services. We conducted pollination exclusion experiments and deployed camera traps at durian trees from October 2017 to January 2018 in an area where the local economy depends on durian production in West Sulawesi, Indonesia. Durian flowers in the experiment that were accessible to bats had significantly higher fruit set compared with flowers that were completely closed to animal visitors or those that could only be visited by insects, suggesting that bats were the primary durian pollinator. The small, highly nectarivorous cave nectar bat (Eonycteris spelaea) visited more inflorescences (= 25) and had visits of much longer duration ( = 116.87 sec/visit) than the two species of flying foxes: Pteropus alecto (n = 7 inflorescences visited,  = 11.07 sec/visit) and Acerodon celebensis (= 6 inflorescences visited,  = 11.60 sec/visit). Visits by large and small bats were influential in differentiating successful durian fruit production from unsuccessful. Using a bioeconomic approach, we conservatively estimate that bat pollination services are valued at ~$ 117/ha/fruiting season. By demonstrating an ecological link between bats and the local economy, this research provides an urgent message for Southeast Asian governments regarding the need to promote bat conservation in order to increase the production of durian grown under semi‐wild conditions. We compared the influence of pollination intensity (PI) on fruit set and seed number per pod in two cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) clones, IFC5 (Forastero Lower-Amazon Amelonado), which is self-compatible and known to produce a high number of seeds per pod under open pollination, and SCA6 (Forastero Upper-Amazon), which is self-incompatible and known to produce a low number of seeds per pod under open pollination. With both clones, PI had a positive effect on fruit set, with the maximum rate requiring more than 150 pollen grains per pod. One-half of the maximum rate of fruit set was reached with 39 pollen grains per pod for SCA6, and 78 for IFC5. With SCA6, a significant positive effect of PI on seed number per pod was also observed, with maximum seed number requiring more than 200 pollen grains per pod. In contrast, seed numbers with IFC5 were approximately equal over the PI range 100–800 pollen grains per pod. Patterns of seed number per pod were compared after: (1) open insect pollination, (2) low-intensity hand pollination and (3) high-intensity hand pollination. The patterns obtained with IFC5 under open pollination showed a peak of 40–50 seeds per pod, whereas the distribution patterns were more even with SCA6. The pattern of seed number under open pollination was similar to that obtained with high-intensity hand pollination for IFC5, and with low-intensity hand pollination for SCA6. We concluded that the high number of seeds per pod observed with IFC5 under natural insect pollination may be explained by a high number of compatible self-pollen grains on the stigma and by a severe drop of low-pollinated flowers eliminating potential lowfilled fruits. With SCA6, however, the number of compatible pollen grains deposited on the stigma was probably low under open pollination, and the flowers required lower pollen quantities to set fruit, which resulted in a high frequency of low seed numbers per fruit. This difference in the capacity to set low-seeded fruits might be considered as an adaptive trait related to the mode of reproduction.  相似文献

Six almond progenies, each the product of a cross between a self-compatible and a self-incompatible parent, were analysed for stylar ribonucleases. Proteins were extracted and separated using non-equilibrium pH gradient electrofocusing (NEPHGE), and the gels were stained for ribonuclease activity. Most seedlings showed either two principal bands, interpreted as corresponding to two incompatibility alleles, or a single band. The seedlings were also bagged in the field at flowering time to determine fruit set after selfing, and some were also examined for the growth of pollen-tubes in selfed styles using UV fluorescence microscopy. With very few exceptions, those seedlings showing single-banded zymograms were found to be self-compatible according to field and microscope studies, and those with two bands were found to be self-incompatible. We conclude that the allele for self-compatibility in almond does not code for ribonuclease activity and that the ribonuclease isoenzyme assay is a convenient technique for predicting self-compatibility in segregating progenies. The mating success of individually marked male Mediterranean fruit flies was monitored over 6 consecutive days in the laboratory. Mating frequency was nonrandom, as the numbers of both males that failed to mate and males that mated many (more than four) times were much higher than expected by chance alone. Differential mating success resulted in part from intermale variation in activity level. Male copulatory success was positively correlated with the numbers of courtships performed, attempted copulations (mountings), and females courted. Male-male aggression, on the other hand, and a negligible effect on male mating success. Female choice also appeared to influence male mating frequency. Fewer than 10% of courtships resulted in mating, and in most cases females terminated courtship by simply moving away from the male. Females that did mate generally selected males having higher copulatory scores than previously rejected males.  相似文献

Fruit bats provide valuable pollination services to humans through a unique coevolutionary relationship with chiropterophilous plants. However, chiropterophily in the Old World and the pollination roles of large bats, such as flying foxes (Pteropus spp., Acerodon spp., Desmalopex spp.), are still poorly understood and require further elucidation. Efforts to protect these bats have been hampered by a lack of basic quantitative information on their role as ecosystem service providers. Here, we investigate the role of the locally endangered island flying fox Pteropus hypomelanus in the pollination ecology of durian (Durio zibethinus), an economically important crop in Southeast Asia. On Tioman Island, Peninsular Malaysia, we deployed 19 stations of paired infrared camera and video traps across varying heights at four individual flowering trees in a durian orchard. We detected at least nine species of animal visitors, but only bats had mutualistic interactions with durian flowers. There was a clear vertical stratification in the feeding niches of flying foxes and nectar bats, with flying foxes feeding at greater heights in the trees. Flying foxes had a positive effect on mature fruit set and therefore serve as important pollinators for durian trees. As such, semi‐wild durian trees—particularly tall ones—may be dependent on flying foxes for enhancing reproductive success. Our study is the first to quantify the role of flying foxes in durian pollination, demonstrating that these giant fruit bats may have far more important ecological, evolutionary, and economic roles than previously thought. This has important implications and can aid efforts to promote flying fox conservation, especially in Southeast Asian countries.  相似文献

Amino acid analysis was employed in the study of protein in the stigma and pollen of self-incompatible and self-compatible lines of cabbage ( Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata ); from which distinct differences in the contents of amino acids were found between the two lines. The analysis of variance indicated that the contents of 9 kinds of amino acids in the stigma and 6 kinds in the pollen were comparatively much higher in the self-incompatible ones. Cluster analysis was per-formed in order to delete the factors related to the gene type variance. Unassured variances were abandoned by accurate examination. The threonine and tyrosine contents in the stigma and the glycine and alanine content in the pollen were considered as standards to identify self-incompatibility. In the self-incompatible lines, the above-mentioned amino acid contents were higher than 0.223%, 0.358%, 1.593% and 1.464%, respectively; whereas in the self-compatible lines, they were less than 0.185% ,0.164%, 1.470% and 1.006% correspondingly.  相似文献
