Synopsis Spatial separation of fishes in the littoral zone of a turbid prairie lake (Clear Lake, Iowa) was assessed with gill nets and fyke nets. Catch per unit of effort was used to determine differences among habitat types, sampling times within a 24 h period, and sampling months. Four of 10 species examined were significantly more numerous in one of the three habitats — nonvegetated, vegetated, or gravel-rock substrate. Black bullhead (Ictalurus melas) and bigmouth buffalo (Ictiobus cyprinellus) were most abundant in vegetated areas, yellow bass (Morone mississippiensis) in gravel-rock areas, and channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) in both non-vegetated and gravel-rock areas. Temporal patterns in habitat use were indicated for these four species, as well as yellow perch (Perca flavescens), white bass (Morone chrysops), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), walleye (Stizostedion vitreum vitreum), black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus), white sucker (Catostomus commersoni). Summary The plastids in sieve tube members of the stamen vascular bundles ofSorghum bicolor, fixed in glutaraldehyde with postfixation in osmium tetroxide, are of the P-type containing cuneate crystalloids of a proteinaceous nature surrounded by a double envelope. Secondary inclusions are present in these P-type plastids. Avian malaria (Plasmodium relictum) caused significant mortality in wild-caught Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) in 1986 at the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines, Iowa (USA). In early winter, wild birds were captured off the southern coast of Chile and flown to Detroit, Michigan for a 38 day quarantine. After quarantine, 18 birds were dispersed to Lansing, Michigan, six to a facility in Maine, and 46 to Des Moines, Iowa. Upon arrival in Des Moines, several penguins became weak and inactive, had to be force-fed, and died after 2 days. Gross lesions at postmortem included splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, and pulmonary edema. Histopathological examination revealed numerous intraendothelial schizonts in spleen, lung, liver, heart and kidney. Schizonts were generally 16 to 28 micron by 11 to 16 micron and contained merozoites of two distinct sized (macromerozoites, nuclei 1.0 micron; micromerozoites, nuclei 0.5 micron). Based on the morphology of the abundant exoerythrocytic forms, a tentative diagnosis of avian malaria (Plasmodium sp.) was made. Subsequent transmission electron microscopic examination of schizonts in formalized tissue revealed merozoites with tear-shaped rhoptries. Antimalarial therapy was initiated early but deaths continued for 5 mo. Mortality, which eventually totaled 83%, occurred in three distinct waves, each separated by a hiatus of approximately 1 mo. Despite examinations of repeated blood smears, intraerythrocytic Plasmodium relictum was not detected until late in the outbreak. Diagnosis was based on morphologic characteristics including schizonts with eight to 12 merozoites/segmenter and round gametocytes that displaced and turned the infected erythrocyte nucleus. In addition to malaria, penguins showed evidence of aspergillosis, bacterial enteritis (Escherichia coli; Proteus sp.; and Edwardsiella sp.), and helminthiasis (Contracaecum sp. and Tetrabothrius sp.). Based on gross and histological lesions, disease prevalence in this group of penguins was malaria 58%, aspergillosis 61%, enteritis 60%, helminthiasis 26%. Epidemiologic investigation including group transport history, disease prevalence in co-quarantined birds not sent to Des Moines and climatological data implicated Des Moines as the likely site for initial exposure, although information is not conclusive. Stress and concurrent disease certainly contributed to the severe mortality in this group of penguins infected with P. relictum.  相似文献

Illus. 1961.—A shoot apex of a calamitean stem is described from the Des Moines Series, Middle Pennsylvanian. Internodal elongation of the 7 preserved internodes follows a sigmoid curve. A large apical cell has produced derivatives in a fashion apparently comparable to those in Equisetum arvense, except for the number of cells in the first leaf primordium ring and, possibly, the intercalary meristem. Pith meristem developed close to the apical cell. Data from internodal cell elongation of hypodermal cells of the cortex are presented which demonstrate intercalary internodal growth; no intercalary meristems are preserved and the existence of intercalary meristems which might have produced a jointed stem like that of Equisetum is only inferred.  相似文献

Penicillium citrinum Thom, isolated from the sclerotia of Sderotinia minor, was cultured in a broth of Czapek-Dox for 4 to 8 weeks. The filtrate obtained was incorporated into potato dextrose agar or Czapek-Dox agar at different concentrations (v/v). The amended media were tested for mycelial growth of S. minor and other pathogens. Mycelial growth of S. minor was completely inhibited on media amended with 20% (v/v) filtrate of P. citrinum, and considerable inhibition of S. minor occurred at 10 and 15% concentrations. Mycelial growth of S. major, Sclerotium rolfsii, Rhizoctonia solani (AG-4) was inhibited by similar concentrations of filtrate of P. citrinum. Inhibitor(s) in the filtrate were extracted with ethyl acetate and tentatively identified as citrinin. The release of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) byMysis relicta that occurs while feeding may be an important pathway in the recycling of nutrients in Lake Michigan. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the levels of DOC released byM. relicta from Lake Michigan while grazing on laboratory-cultured diatoms. Increasing filtering rates were observed at progressively lower chlorophyll concentrations. Higher filtering rates were accompanied by higher fragmentation of diatoms and a higher concomitant release of DOC from broken cells. While the amount of DOC release is small (0.02–3.30 g C · 1–1· h–1), it nonetheless is of importance to bacteria and possibly some algae. Baxter , R. W. (U. Kansas, Lawrence.) Calamocarpon insignis , a new genus of heterosporous, petrified calamitean cones from the American Carboniferous. Amer. Jour. Bot. 50(5): 469–476. Illus. 1963.—Calamocarpon insignis is described as a new genus of calamitean cone based on numerous fragments of microsporangiate and megasporangiate cones found in coal balls of middle Pennsylvanian age from the Cherokee Group of Kansas and the Des Moines Series of Iowa. The cones are similar to Calamostachys in general construction, having a hollow pith, prominent protoxylem canals, and alternating whorls of sterile bracts and sporangiophores. They differ in that the microsporangiate cones bear microsporangia each containing several hundred microspores which may occur as tetrads or single spores, while the megasporangiate cones bear large rectangular megasporangia each containing a single functional megaspore surrounded by sterile nutritive tissue. The microspores average 30–40μ in diameter compared to a maximum measurement of 2.7 × 0.7 mm for the single rectangular megaspore. The female gametophyte was produced within the megaspore which was held within the megasporangium during the entire period of development. The megasporangia were deciduous so that the entire structure was shed as a unit.  相似文献

Relationships between phytoplankton and periphyton communities were investigated in a central Iowa stream. Results generally support the hypothesis that the phytoplankton community arises from the epipelic periphyton community. A high correlation existed between the proportion of benthic diatoms composing the epipelon and phytoplankton. One dominant epipelic species (Nitzschia acicularis) showed a greater tendency to become planktonic than the grouped remainder of Nitzschia spp. There was a significant inverse relationship between the proportion of centric diatoms in the plankton and volume of flow. Centric diatoms were important members of the plankton only when volume of flow was less than 60 ft3 / sec (2.1 m3 / sec). We have found and characterized an antigen associated with crystal-containing cells in the stomium and connective tissue of the anthers of Nicotiana tabacum L. (tobacco). The antigen, defined by the monoclonal antibody NtF-8B1, localizes to subcellular regions surrounding the crystals. At the light-microscope level, the antigen is detectable just after the first appearance of crystals in the connective tissue of the anther, and at approximately the same time as the appearance of crystals in the stomium. The antigen is not detectable on a Western blot, and gave inconclusive results on a test of periodate sensitivity. It is not the crystals themselves, nor is the presence of the crystals required for antibody recognition. The antigen is sensitive to heat and protease treatment, indicating that it is a protein. The antigen is not tightly membrane-bound, in spite of its localization closely surrounding the crystals. RFLPs were used to investigate components of host-plant response to Exserohilum turcicum in 150 unselected F23 lines of a B52/Mo17 maize population. Following inoculation with spore suspensions of the pathogen (race 0), components of disease development were measured and then quantitative trait mapping was performed to identify the location and effects of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) determining host-plant response. Components of interest were the average number of lesions per leaf, the average percent leaf tissue diseased (severity) and the average size of lesions (cm2). Based on a LOD threshold of 2.31 (P<0.05), the number of lesions appears to be associated with QTLs on chromosomes 1S, 3L, 5S. Severity was associated with analogous regions and, in addition, QTLs on chromosomes 7L and 8L. Most QTLs, for either of these two components, involve additive gene action and partial dominance or overdominance. Summary F2-derived oat lines from inter (Avena sativa L. x A. sterilis L.) and intraspecific (among A. sativa cultivars) matings were evaluated in the F3, F4, and F5 generations for heading date, grain and straw yields, biomass, vegetative dry weight at anthesis, vegetative growth rates until anthesis (GRA) and until maturity (GRM), and harvest index. The associations of GRA and GRM with harvest index ranged from zero to slightly negative. The positive correlations of GRA and GRM with grain yield were stronger in inter than in intraspecific matings. Grain yield was positively associated with harvest index in both inter and intraspecific matings. The results suggest the use of A. sterilis x A. sativa matings to improve vegetative growth rate, grain yield, and, to a certain extent, harvest index simultaneously without affecting the growth duration of the crop.Journal Paper No. J 12130 of the Iowa Agric. and Home Econ. Summary Factors such as varieties of wheat, hydrogen ion and various mineral salts concentrations of soil having possible influence on the pathogenicity of certain isolates ofColletotrichum graminicola (Ces.)Wils. on wheat were studied. Of the six varieties of wheat studied, the variety Dual was highly susceptible, and the variety Knox highly resistant. The percentage seedling blight was greatest in soil at the highest pH values, 7.0–9.0. Concentrations of potassium nitrate, ammonium nitrate and magnesium sulfate in soil greatly influenced disease development.Portion of a Ph. Most small mammals support the nutritional requirements of milk production by increasing food intake. However, when nutrient intake is low, maternal body reserves may be mobilized to maintain adequate milk output. We examined patterns of body composition, including dry matter, fat, protein, and mineral content in big brown bats, Eptesicus fuscus, during lactation. Concentrations of fat and phosphorus were markedly lower in lactating mothers during week three of lactation than during the first two weeks, but these constituents rebounded to previous levels in the fourth and fifth week. Rapid recovery from fat depletion suggests that females are able to adjust to changes in demands for energy. The decrease in phosphorus during mid-lactation suggests bone demineralization, but an interspecific comparison of adult concentrations of minerals prevalent in bone suggests that mineral concentrations may never reach critically low levels in reproductively active females.  相似文献

The organism completed its entire life cycle on artificial media from spore to spore, in the presence of contaminating bacteria, in 36 days. Summary Genetic analysis of a yellow foliar mutant in soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) showed maternal inheritance of the mutant phenotype designatedcyt-Y 3. The mutant was grown beside normal green sibs (cyt-G 3) under three different photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFD), and samples were collected to determine pigment content and for electron microscopy analyses of plastid ultrastructure. The plastid ultrastructure ofcyt-Y 3 appeared normal at low PPFD and the carotenoid level ofcyt-Y 3 was also normal, but the chlorophyll content was only approximately one-third that ofcyt-G 3. Under medium and high PPFD,cyt-Y 3 plastids lacked a structured thylakoid, and total chlorophyll content was only 28% and 1% of normal, respectively; the carotenoid levels ofcyt-Y 3 also dropped to 33% and 2% of normal, respectively. These data indicate that the effect of high PPFD oncyt-Y 3 might result from a deficiency in a plastid membrane protein. The resulting changes in membrane configuration could then interfere with the accumulation or stabilization of chlorophylls and carotenoids, thereby resulting in the subsequent photooxidation of both at medium and high PPFD. Collections of Ulva lactuca (Linnaeus) at nine locations along the coast of Ras Beirut, Lebanon were analysed for lead, mercury, phosphate, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, and zinc. Low lead concentrations, the same in all samples, could possibly indicate that U. lactuca has some means by which lead uptake and toxicity can be controlled. Phosphate levels may be a contributing factor to this process.Concentrations of all other elements seemed relatively uniform with few exceptions. This suggests that U. lactuca is subject to similar environmental conditions and element exposure at each of the collecting sites and might be capable of maintaining biochemical stability under high levels of stress.Further studies of toxic and nutrient elements as to their individual and combined effects in U. lactuca are needed.c/o Sturdy Memorial Hospital, Attleboro, Massachusetts U.S.A.  相似文献

Two Streptomyces strains were grown on sugarcane bagasse and groundnut hulls lignocelluloses in semi-solid state culture at 37°C for 12 weeks. Best results gave a 45% depletion of sugarcane bagasse lignocellulose with a 21% crude protein content of final material. In 4-d-old dark-grown oat (Avena sativa L.) seedlings, the majority of the type-I-phytochrome (phyA) mRNA was found within 10 mm of the tip of the coleoptile sheath and in the mesocotyl node; almost none was detected in the enclosed primary leaf. In contrast, chlorophyll-a/b-binding-protein (cab) mRNAs were found almost exclusively in the enclosed primary leaf and were barely detectable in total-RNA samples from the coleoptile sheath or mesocotyl node of red-light-treated etiolated seedlings. Polypeptides of 21, 36 and 37 kDa are induced in the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii Dang. when cells are transferred from high (2%) to low (0.03%) CO2 concentrations. The synthesis of these polypeptides is correlated with the induction of the CO2-concentrating mechanism. In this work we studied the effect of the growth conditions on the synthesis of these polypeptides with the aim of clarifying whether the induction of all three of these low-CO2-inducible polypeptides requires the same environmental factor. Our results showed that induction of the 21- and 36-kDa polypeptides under low-CO2 conditions occurred only in the light, while the 37-kDa periplasmic carbonic anhydrase (EC 4.2.1.1) was induced in light, darkness, and in both synchronous and asynchronous cultures. In addition, induction of these polypeptides appeared to be determined more by the O2/CO2 ratio than by the CO2 concentrations. None of these polypeptides could be induced in either of two different mutants of C. reinhardtii, one lacking ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (EC 4.1.1.39) and the other with inactive enzyme.
