Glasses in the system xGd2O3·(100-x)[GeO2·V2O5] with 0 ≤ × ≤ 20 mol% have been prepared from the melt quenching method. In this paper, we investigated changes in germanium coordination number in gadolinium-vanadate-germanate glasses through molar volume analysis, measurements of densities, investigations of FTIR and UV-VIS spectroscopy, calculations of density functional theory (DFT). Analyzing the structural changes resulted from the IR spectra we found that the gadolinium ions have a pronounced affinity toward [VO4] structural units which contain non-bridging oxygens necessary for the charge compensation. The introduction of the excess of oxygen yields the formation of [VO5] structural units. This attains maximum value at 5 mol% Gd2O3, in agreement with the density measurements. Further, the addition of the surplus of oxygen implies the transformation of [VO5] to [VO4] structural units and the formation of VO4−3 orthovanadate structural units. The UV-VIS spectra show a broad UV absorption band located in the 300–500 nm region. These bands are assumed to originate from the combination of vanadium ions possibly present in the three states of valence. The presence of Ge-Ge wrong bonds attains its maximum values in the samples with x = 5 and 15 mol% Gd2O3 (bands centered in the 250–300 nm range). DFT calculations show the massive vibrations of the [VOn] structural units coupled with each other via [GeO6] and [GeO4] structural units. This leads to the splitting of the bridge modes and a multiplication of the number of these bands.  相似文献

In this work, the effects of iron ion intercalations on lead–tellurate glasses were investigated via FTIR, Raman and UV-Vis spectroscopies. This homogeneous glass system has compositions xFe2O3·(100−x)[4TeO2·PbO2], where x = 0–60 mol%. The presented observations in these mechanisms show that the lead ions have a pronounced affinity towards [TeO3] structural units, resulting in the deformation of the Te–O–Te linkages, and leading to the intercalation of [PbO n ] (n = 3, 4) and [FeO n ] (n = 4, 6) entities in the [TeO4] chain network. The formation of negatively charged [FeO4]1− structural units implies the attraction of Pb2+ ions in order to compensate for this electrical charge. Upon increasing the Fe2O3 content to 60 mol%, the network can accommodate an excess of oxygen through the formation of [FeO6] structural units and the conversion of [TeO4] into [TeO3] structural units. For even higher Fe2O3 contents, Raman spectra indicate a greater degree of depolymerization of the vitreous network than FTIR spectra do. The bands due to the Pb–O bond vibrations are very strongly polarized and the [TeO4] structural units convert into [TeO3] units via an intermediate coordination stage termed “[TeO3+1]” structural units. Our UV-Vis spectroscopic data show two mechanisms: (i) the conversion of the Fe3+ to Fe2+ at the same time as the oxidation of Pb2+ to Pb+4 ions for samples with low Fe2O3 contents; (ii) when the Fe2O3 content is high (x ≥ 50 mol%), the Fe2+ ions capture positive holes and are transferred to Fe3+ ions through a photochemical reaction, while the Pb2+ ions are formed by the reduction of Pb4+ ions. DFT calculations show that the addition of Fe2O3 to lead–tellurate glasses seems to break the axial Te–O bonds, and the [TeO4] structural units are gradually transformed into [TeO3+1]- and [TeO3]-type polyhedra. Analyzing these data further indicates a gradual conversion of the lead ions from covalent to ionic environment. There is then a charge transfer between the tri- and tetracoordinated tellurium atoms due to the capacity of the lead–tellurate network to form the appropriate coordination environments containing structural units of opposite charge, such as iron ions, [FeO4]1−.  相似文献

Novel Ca2B2O5·H2O:Eu3+ nanotubes, constructed with nanobelts, were prepared using a hydrothermal method. The Ca3(BO3)2:Eu3+ nanobelts with a thickness of about 100 nm were made for the first time using a two‐step hydrothermal process with Ca2B2O5·H2O:Eu3+ as the precursor. The samples were characterized by energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, Fourier transform infra‐red spectroscopy, thermogravimetry differential thermal analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The relationship between Ca3(BO3)2:Eu3+ and Ca2B2O5·H2O:Eu3+ was also studied. Possible reaction and growth mechanisms for Ca2B2O5·H2O:Eu3+ and Ca3(BO3)2:Eu3+ were proposed. Ca3(BO3)2:Eu3+ preserved the basic microstructure unit of Ca2B2O5·H2O:Eu3+. Both Ca2B2O5·H2O:Eu3+ and Ca3(BO3)2:Eu3+ exhibited red emissions centred at 614 nm, but the maximum excitation peaks for Ca2B2O5·H2O:Eu3+ and Ca3(BO3)2:Eu3+ differed. Ca3(BO3)2:Eu3+ exhibited higher photoluminescence intensity but a lower R/O value than Ca2B2O5·H2O:Eu3+.  相似文献

Eight male endurance runners [mean ± (SD): age 25 (6) years; height 1.79 (0.06) m; body mass 70.5 (6.0) kg; % body fat 12.5 (3.2); maximal oxygen consumption (O2max 62.9 (1.7) ml · kg−1 · min−1] performed an interval training session, preceded immediately by test 1, followed after 1 h by test 2, and after 72 h by test 3. The training session was six 800-m intervals at 1 km · h−1 below the velocity achieved at O2max with 3 min of recovery between each interval. Tests 1, 2 and 3 were identical, and included collection of expired gas, measurement of ventilatory frequency (f v ), heart rate (f c), rate of perceived exertion (RPE), and blood lactate concentration ([La]B) during the final 5 min of 15 min of running at 50% of the velocity achieved at O2max (50% −O2max).␣Oxygen uptake (O2), ventilation ( E ), and respiratory exchange ratio (R) were subsequently determined from duplicate expired gas collections. Body mass and plasma volume changes were measured preceding and immediately following the training session, and before tests 1–3. Subjects ingested water immediately following the training session, the volume of which was determined from the loss of body mass during the session. Repeated measures analysis of variance with multiple comparison (Tukey) was used to test differences between results. No significant differences in body mass or plasma volume existed between the three test stages, indicating that the differences recorded for the measured parameters could not be attributed to changes in body mass or plasma volume between tests, and that rehydration after the interval training session was successful. A significant (P < 0.05) increase was found from test 1 to test 2 [mean (SD)] for O2 [2.128 (0.147) to 2.200 (0.140) 1 · min−1], f c [125 (17) to 132 (16) beats · min−1], and RPE [9 (2) to 11 (2)]. A significant (P < 0.05) decrease was found for submaximal R [0.89 (0.03) to 0.85 (0.04)]. These results suggest that alterations in O2 during moderate-intensity, constant-velocity running do occur following heavy-intensity endurance running training, and that this is due to factors in addition to changed substrate metabolism towards greater fat utilisation, which could explain only 31% of the increase in O2. Substrate utilization during and after low- and moderate-intensity exercise of similar caloric expenditure was compared. Ten active males [age: 26.9 (4.8) years; height: 181.1 (4.8) cm; Mass: 75.7 (8.8) kg; maximum O2 consumption (O2 max ): 51.2 (4.8) ml · kg−1 · min−1] cycled at 33% and 66% O2 max on separate days for 90 and 45 min, respectively. After exercise, subjects rested in a recumbent position for 6 h. Two h post-exercise, subjects ate a standard meal of 66% carbohydrate (CHO), 11% protein, and 23% fat. Near-continuous indirect calorimetry and measurement of urinary nitrogen excretion were used to determine substrate utilization. Total caloric expenditure was similar for the two trials; however, significantly (P<0.05) more fat [42.4 (3.6) g versus 24.0 (12.2) g] and less CHO [142.5 (28.5) g versus 188.8 (45.2) g] was utilized as a substrate during the low-intensity compared to the moderate-intensity trial. Protein utilization was similar for the two trials. The difference in substrate use can be attributed to the exercise period because over twice as much fat was utilized during low-intensity [30.0 (11.0) g] compared to moderate-intensity exercise [13.6 (6.6) g]. Significantly more (P<0.05) CHO was utilized during the moderate-intensity [106.0 (27.8) g] compared to the low-intensity exercise [68.7 (20.0) g]. Substrate use during the recovery period was not significantly different. We conclude that low-intensity, long-duration exercise results in a greater total fat oxidation than does moderate intensity exercise of similar caloric expenditure. Dietary-induced thermogenesis was not different for the two trials. Accepted: 3 November 1997  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to develop a method to determine the power output at which oxygen uptake (O2) during an incremental exercise test begins to rise non-linearly. A group of 26 healthy non-smoking men [mean age 22.1 (SD 1.4) years, body mass 73.6 (SD 7.4) kg, height 179.4 (SD 7.5) cm, maximal oxygen uptake (O2max) 3.726 (SD 0.363) l · min−1], experienced in laboratory tests, were the subjects in this study. They performed an incremental exercise test on a cycle ergometer at a pedalling rate of 70 rev · min−1. The test started at a power output of 30 W, followed by increases amounting to 30 W every 3 min. At 5 min prior to the first exercise intensity, at the end of each stage of exercise protocol, blood samples (1 ml each) were taken from an antecubital vein. The samples were analysed for plasma lactate concentration [La]pl, partial pressure of O2 and CO2 and hydrogen ion concentration [H+]b. The lactate threshold (LT) in this study was defined as the highest power output above which [La]pl showed a sustained increase of more than 0.5 mmol · l−1 · step−1. The O2 was measured breath-by-breath. In the analysis of the change point (CP) of O2 during the incremental exercise test, a two-phase model was assumed for the 3rd-min-data of each step of the test: X i =at i +b i for i=1,2,…,T, and E(X i )>at i +b for i =T+1,…,n, where X 1, … , X n are independent and ɛ i ∼N(0,σ2). In the first phase, a linear relationship between O2 and power output was assumed, whereas in the second phase an additional increase in O2 above the values expected from the linear model was allowed. The power output at which the first phase ended was called the change point in oxygen uptake (CP-O2). The identification of the model consisted of two steps: testing for the existence of CP and estimating its location. Both procedures were based on suitably normalised recursive residuals. We showed that in 25 out of 26 subjects it was possible to determine the CP-O2 as described in our model. The power output at CP-O2 amounted to 136.8 (SD 31.3) W. It was only 11 W – non significantly – higher than the power output corresponding to LT. The O2 at CP-O2 amounted to 1.828 (SD 0.356) l · min−1 was [48.9 (SD 7.9)% O2 max ]. The [La]pl at CP-O2, amounting to 2.57 (SD 0.69) mmol · l−1 was significantly elevated (P<0.01) above the resting level [1.85 (SD 0.46) mmol · l−1], however the [H+]b at CP-O2 amounting to 45.1 (SD 3.0) nmol · l−1, was not significantly different from the values at rest which amounted to 44.14 (SD 2.79) nmol · l−1. An increase of power output of 30 W above CP-O2 was accompanied by a significant increase in [H+]b above the resting level (P=0.03). Accepted: 25 March 1998  相似文献

This study examined the effect of mild hypobaria (MH) on the peak oxygen consumption (O2peak) and performance of ten trained male athletes [ (SEM); O2peak = 72.4 (2.2) ml · kg−1 · min−1] and ten trained female athletes [O2peak = 60.8 (2.1) ml · kg−1 · min−1]. Subjects performed 5-min maximal work tests on a cycle ergometer within a hypobaric chamber at both normobaria (N, 99.33 kPa) and at MH (92.66 kPa), using a counter-balanced design. MH was equivalent to 580 m altitude. O2peak at MH decreased significantly compared with N in both men [− 5.9 (0.9)%] and women [− 3.7 (1.0)%]. Performance (total kJ) at MH was also reduced significantly in men [− 3.6 (0.8)%] and women [− 3.8 (1.2)%]. Arterial oxyhaemoglobin saturation (SaO2) at O2peak was significantly lower at MH compared with N in both men [90.1 (0.6)% versus 92.0 (0.6)%] and women [89.7 (3.1)% versus 92.1 (3.0)%]. While SaO2 at O2peak was not different between men and women, it was concluded that relative, rather than absolute, O2peak may be a more appropriate predictor of exercise-induced hypoxaemia. For men and women, it was calculated that 67–76% of the decrease in O2peak could be accounted for by a decrease in O2 delivery, which indicates that reduced O2 tension at mild altitude (580 m) leads to impairment of exercise performance in a maximal work bout lasting ≈ 5 min. Possibilities of the linear-polarized infrared (IR-LD) spectroscopy of oriented colloid suspensions in nematic liquid crystals, for structural and local structural elucidation for first time are demonstrated of inorganic compounds and glasses. The advantages of the method for tellurite and borate glasses are shown. The IR-band assignment of the typical local structural units in the glasses are proposed by a comparison with the IR-characteristics of appropriate crystalline analogues as α-TeO2, V2O5, MoO3 · H2O and its high temperature form. The IR-spectroscopic characteristics of BO3, BO4 and boroxol ring are elucidated, using crystalline β-BaB2O4, SrB4O7, H3BO3 and B2O3 as model systems, where the structural moieties have been refined by single crystal X-ray diffraction.  相似文献

Hypoxia caused by eutrophication occurs over large areas in aquatic systems worldwide. Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) exposed to hypoxia (1 mg · O2 · l−1 and 2 mg · O2 · l−1) for 1 week showed a significant reduction in feeding rate, respiration rate, faecal production and nitrogenous excretion compared to those maintained at normoxia (7 mg · O2 · l−1). Fish exposed to hypoxia showed negative scope for growth (SfG), but no significant difference in the specific growth rate was revealed after 1 week in both hypoxic groups. A significant reduction in RNA/DNA ratio was, however, clearly evident in the white muscle of the 1 mg · O2 · l−1 treatment group, but not in the 2 mg · O2 · l−1 treatment group. Both specific growth rate and RNA/DNA ratio were significantly reduced when fish were exposed to severe hypoxia (0.5 mg · O2 · l−1) for 4 weeks. At all levels of hypoxia, growth reduction was accompanied by a significant decrease in RNA/DNA ratio in white muscle. Covariance analysis showed no significant difference between the slope of RNA/DNA ratio and growth rate under normoxic conditions and 0.5 mg · O2 · l−1 for 4 weeks (F=1.036, P > 0.326), as well as 1.0 mg · O2 · l−1 and 2.0 mg · O2 · l−1 for 1 week (F = 0.457, P > 0.5), indicating that the RNA/DNA ratio serves as a biomarker of growth under all oxygen levels, at least under controlled experimental conditions. SfG also appears to be more sensitive than the RNA/DNA ratio in responding to hypoxia in fish. Accepted: 15 September 2000  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a thiamin derivative, thiamin tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide (TTFD), on oxygen uptake (˙VO2), lactate accumulation and cycling performance during exercise to exhaustion. Using a randomized, double-blind, cross-over design with a 10-day washout between trials, 14 subjects ingested either 1 g · day−1 of TTFD or a placebo (PL) for 4 days. On day 3, subjects performed a progressive exercise test to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer for the determination of ˙VO2submax, ˙VO2peak, lactate concentration ([La ]), lactate threshold (ThLa) and heart rate ( f c). On day 4, subjects performed a maximal 2000-m time trial on a cycle ergometer. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures was used to determine significant differences between trials. There were no significant differences detected between trials for serial measures of ˙VO2submax, [La] or f c. Likewise, ˙VO2peak [PL 4.06 (0.19) TTFD 4.12 (0.19) l · min−1, P = 0.83], ThLa [PL 2.47 (0.17), TTFD 2.43 (0.16) l · min−1, P = 0.86] and 2000-m performance time [PL 204.5 (5.5), TTFD 200.9 (4.3) s, P = 0.61] were not significantly different between trials. The results of this study suggest that thiamin derivative supplementation does not influence high-intensity exercise performance. Accepted: 19 December 1996  相似文献

The present experiment was designed to study the importance of strength and muscle mass as factors limiting maximal oxygen uptake (O2 max ) in wheelchair subjects. Thirteen paraplegic subjects [mean age 29.8 (8.7) years] were studied during continuous incremental exercises until exhaustion on an arm-cranking ergometer (AC), a wheelchair ergometer (WE) and motor-driven treadmill (TM). Lean arm volume (LAV) was estimated using an anthropometric method based upon the measurement of various circumferences of the arm and forearm. Maximal strength (MVF) was measured while pushing on the rim of the wheelchair for three positions of the hand on the rim (−30°, 0° and +30°). The results indicate that paraplegic subjects reached a similar O2 max [1.23 (0.34) l · min−1, 1.25 (0.38) l · min−1, 1.22 (0.18) l · min−1 for AC, TM and WE, respectively] and O2 max /body mass [19.7 (5.2) ml · min−1 · kg−1, 19.5 (6.14) ml · min−1 · kg−1, 19.18 (4.27) ml · min−1 · kg−1 for AC, TM and WE, respectively on the three ergometers. Maximal heart rate f c max during the last minute of AC (173 (17) beats · min−1], TM [168 (14) beats · min−1], and WE [165 (16) beats · min−1], were correlated, but f c max was significantly higher for AC than for TM (P<0.03). There were significant correlations between MVF and LAV (P<0.001) and between the MVF data obtained at different angles of the hand on the rim [311.9 (90.1) N, 313.2 (81.2) N, 257.1 (71) N, at −30°, 0° and +30°, respectively]. There was no correlation between O2 max and LAV or MVF. The relatively low values of f c max suggest that O2 max was, at least in part, limited by local aerobic factors instead of central cardiovascular factors. On the other hand, the lack of a significant correlation between O2 max and MVF or muscle mass was not in favour of muscle strength being the main factor limiting O2 max in our subjects. The energy cost per unit of distance (C s, kilojoules per metre) of the front-crawl, back, breast and butterfly strokes was assessed in 20 elite swimmers. At sub-maximal speeds (v), C s was measured dividing steady-state oxygen consumption (O2) by the speed (v, metres per second). At supra-maximal v, C s was calculated by dividing the total metabolic energy (E, kilojoules) spent in covering 45.7, 91.4 and 182.9 m by the distance. E was obtained as: E = E an+O2max t pO2max(1−e−( t p/)), where E an was the amount of energy (kilojoules) derived from anaerobic sources, O2max litres per second was the maximal oxygen uptake, α (=20.9 kJ · l O2 −1) was the energy equivalent of O2, τ (24 s) was the time constant assumed for the attainment of O2max at muscle level at the onset of exercise, and t p (seconds) was the performance time. The lactic acid component was assumed to increase exponentially with t p to an asymptotic value of 0.418 kJ · kg−1 of body mass for t p ≥ 120 s. The lactic acid component of E an was obtained from the net increase of lactate concentration after exercise (Δ[La]b) assuming that, when Δ[La]b = 1 mmol · l−1 the net amount of metabolic energy released by lactate formation was 0.069 kJ · kg−1. Over the entire range of v, front crawl was the least costly stroke. For example at 1 m · s−1, C s amounted, on average, to 0.70, 0.84, 0.82 and 0.124 kJ · m−1 in front crawl, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke, respectively; at 1.5 m · s−1, C s was 1.23, 1.47, 1.55 and 1.87 kJ · m−1 in the four strokes, respectively. The C s was a continuous function of the speed in all of the four strokes. It increased exponentially in crawl and backstroke, whereas in butterfly C s attained a minimum at the two lowest v to increase exponentially at higher v. The C s in breaststroke was a linear function of the v, probably because of the considerable amount of energy spent in this stroke for accelerating the body during the pushing phase so as to compensate for the loss of v occurring in the non-propulsive phase. This study examined the thermoregulatory responses of men (group M) and women (group F) to uncompensable heat stress. In total, 13 M [mean (SD) age 31.8 (4.7) years, mass 82.7 (12.5) kg, height␣1.79␣(0.06) m, surface area to mass ratio 2.46␣(0.18) m2 · kg−1 · 10−2, Dubois surface area 2.01 (0.16) m2, %body fatness 14.6 (3.9)%, O2peak 49.0 (4.8) ml · kg−1 · min−1] and 17 F [23.2 (4.2) years, 62.4 (7.7) kg, 1.65 (0.07) m, 2.71 (0.14) m2 · kg−1 · 10−2, 1.68 (0.13) m2, 20.2 (4.8)%, 43.2 (6.6) ml · kg−1 · min−1, respectively] performed light intermittent exercise (repeated intervals of 15 min of walking at 4.0 km · h−1 followed by 15 min of seated rest) in the heat (40°C, 30% relative humidity) while wearing nuclear, biological, and chemical protective clothing (0.29 m2 ·°C · W−1 or 1.88 clo, Woodcock vapour permeability coefficient 0.33 i m). Group F consisted of eight non-users and nine users of oral contraceptives tested during the early follicular phase of their menstrual cycle. Heart rates were higher for F throughout the session reaching 166.7 (15.9) beats · min−1 at 105 min (n = 13) compared with 145.1 (14.4) beats · min−1 for M. Sweat rates and evaporation rates from the clothing were lower and average skin temperature () was higher for F. The increase in rectal temperature (T re) was significantly faster for the F, increasing 1.52 (0.29)°C after 105 min compared with an increase of 1.37 (0.29)°C for M. Tolerance times were significantly longer for M [142.9 (24.5) min] than for F [119.3 (17.3) min]. Partitional calorimetric estimates of heat storage (S) revealed that although the rate of S was similar between genders [42.1 (6.6) and 46.1 (9.7) W · m−2 for F and M, respectively], S expressed per unit of total mass was significantly lower for F [7.76 (1.44) kJ · kg−1] compared with M [9.45 (1.26) kJ · kg−1]. When subjects were matched for body fatness (n = 8 F and 8 M), tolerance times [124.5 (14.7) and 140.3 (27.4) min for F and M, respectively] and S [8.67 (1.44) and 9.39 (1.05) kJ · kg−1 for F and M, respectively] were not different between the genders. It was concluded that females are at a thermoregulatory disadvantage compared with males when wearing protective clothing and exercising in a hot environment. This disadvantage can be attributed to the lower specific heat of adipose versus non-adipose tissue and a higher percentage body fatness. Accepted: 31 October 1997  相似文献

The aims of the present study were: (1) to assess aerobic metabolism in paraplegic (P) athletes (spinal lesion level, T4–L3) by means of peak oxygen uptake (O2peak) and ventilatory threshold (VT), and (2) to determine the nature of exercise limitation in these athletes by means of cardioventilatory responses at peak exercise. Eight P athletes underwent conventional spirographic measurements and then performed an incremental wheelchair exercise on an adapted treadmill. Ventilatory data were collected every minute using an automated metabolic system: ventilation (l · min−1), oxygen uptake (O2, l · min−1, ml · min−1 · kg−1), carbon dioxide production (CO2, ml · min−1), respiratory exchange ratio, breathing frequency and tidal volume. Heart rate (HR, beats · min−1) was collected with the aid of a standard electrocardiogram. O2peak was determined using conventional criteria. VT was determined by the breakpoint in the CO2O2 relationship, and is expressed as the absolute VT (O2, ml · min−1 · kg−1) and relative VT (percentage of O2peak). Spirometric values and cardioventilatory responses at rest and at peak exercise allowed the measurement of ventilatory reserve (VR), heart rate reserve (HRr), heart rate response (HRR), and O2 pulse (O2 P). Results showed a O2peak value of 40.6 (2.5) ml · min−1 · kg−1, an absolute VT detected at 23.1 (1.5) ml · min−1 · kg−1 O2 and a relative VT at 56.4 (2.2)% O2peak. HRr [15.8 (3.2) beats · min−1], HRR [48.6 (4.3) beat · l−1], and O2 P [0.23 (0.02) ml · kg−1 · beat−1] were normal, whereas VR at peak exercise [42.7 (2.4)%] was increased. As wheelchair exercise excluded the use of an able-bodied (AB) control group, we compared our O2peak and VT results with those for other P subjects and AB controls reported in the literature, and we compared our cardioventilatory responses with those for respiratory and cardiac patients. The low O2peak values obtained compared with subject values obtained during an arm-crank exercise may be due to a reduced active muscle mass. Absolute VT was somewhat comparable to that of AB subjects, mainly due to the similar muscle mass involved in wheelchair and arm-crank exercise by P and AB subjects, respectively. The increased VR, as reported in patients with chronic heart failure, suggested that P athletes exhibited cardiac limitation at peak exercise, and this contributed to the lower O2peak measured in these subjects. This study compared the effects of supplementing the normal diets of six trained cyclists [maximal oxygen uptake O2max) 4.5 (0.36)l · min−1; values are mean (SD)] with additional carbohydrate (CHO) on muscle glycogen utilisation during a 1-h cycle time-trial (TT). Using a randomised crossover design, subjects consumed either their normal diet (NORM) for 3 days, which consisted of 426 (137) g · day−1 CHO [5.9 (1.4) g · kg−1 body mass (BM)], or additional CHO (SUPP) to increase their intake to 661 (76) g · day−1 [9.3 (0.7) g · kg−1 BM]. The SUPP diet elevated muscle glycogen content from 459 (83) to 565 (62) mmol · kg−1 dry weight (d.w.) (P < 0.05). However, despite the increased pre-exercise muscle glycogen stores, there was no difference in the distance cycled during the TT [40.41 (1.44) vs 40.18 (1.76) km for NORM and SUPP, respectively]. With NORM, muscle glycogen declined from 459 (83) to 175 (64) mmol · kg−1 d.w., whereas with SUPP the corresponding values were 565 (62) and 292 (113) mmol · kg−1 d.w. Accordingly, both muscle glycogen utilisation [277 (64) vs 273 (114) mmol · kg−1 d.w.] and total CHO oxidation [169 (20) vs 165 (30) g · h−1 for NORM and SUPP, respectively] were similar. Neither were there any differences in plasma glucose or lactate concentrations during the two experimental trials. Plasma glucose concentration averaged 5.5 (0.5) and 5.6 (0.6) mmol · l−1, while plasma lactate concentration averaged 4.4 (1.9) and 4.4 (2.3) mmol · l−1 for NORM and SUPP, respectively. The results of this study show that when well-trained subjects increase the CHO content of their diet for 3 days from 6 to 9 g · kg−1 BM there is only a modest increase in muscle glycogen content. Since supplementary CHO did not improve TT performance, we conclude that additional CHO provides no benefit to performance for athletes who compete in intense, continuous events lasting 1 h. Furthermore, the substantial muscle CHO reserves observed at the termination of exercise indicate that whole-muscle glycogen depletion does not determine fatigue at this exercise intensity and duration. A group of 12 healthy non-smoking men [mean age 22.3 (SD 1.1) years], performed an incremental exercise test. The test started at 30 W, followed by increases in power output (P) of 30 W every 3 min, until exhaustion. Blood samples were taken from an antecubital vein for determination of plasma concentration lactate [La]pl and acid-base balance variables. Below the lactate threshold (LT) defined in this study as the highest P above which a sustained increase in [La]pl was observed (at least 0.5 mmol · l−1 within 3 min), the pulmonary oxygen uptake (O2) measured breath-by-breath, showed a linear relationship with P. However, at P above LT [in this study 135 (SD 30) W] there was an additional accumulating increase in O2 above that expected from the increase in P alone. The magnitude of this effect was illustrated by the difference in the final P observed at maximal oxygen uptake (O2max) during the incremental exercise test (P max,obs at O2max) and the expected power output at O2max(P max,exp at O2max) predicted from the linear O2-P relationship derived from the data collected below LT. The P max,obs at O2max amounting to 270 (SD 19) W was 65.1 (SD 35) W (19%) lower (P<0.01) than the P max,exp at O2max . The mean value of O2max reached at P max,obs amounted to 3555 (SD 226) ml · min−1 which was 572 (SD 269) ml · min−1 higher (P<0.01) than the O2 expected at this P, calculated from the linear relationship between O2 and P derived from the data collected below LT. This fall in locomotory efficiency expressed by the additional increase in O2, amounting to 572 (SD 269) ml O2 · min−1, was accompanied by a significant increase in [La]pl amounting to 7.04 (SD 2.2) mmol · l−1, a significant increase in blood hydrogen ion concentration ([H+]b) to 7.4 (SD 3) nmol · l−1 and a significant fall in blood bicarbonate concentration to 5.78 (SD 1.7) mmol · l−1, in relation to the values measured at the P of the LT. We also correlated the individual values of the additional O2 with the increases (Δ) in variables [La]pl and Δ[H+]b. The Δ values for [La]pl and Δ[H+]b were expressed as the differences between values reached at the P max,obs at O2max and the values at LT. No significant correlations between the additional O2 and Δ[La]pl on [H+]b were found. In conclusion, when performing an incremental exercise test, exceeding P corresponding to LT was accompanied by a significant additional increase in O2 above that expected from the linear relationship between O2 and P occurring at lower P. However, the magnitude of the additional increase in O2 did not correlate with the magnitude of the increases in [La]pl and [H+]b reached in the final stages of the incremental test. The effect of environmental hypercapnia on respiratory and acid-base variables was studied in white sturgeon, Acipenser transmontanus. Blood PCO2, PO2, pH, hemoglobin concentration, and plasma lactate, glucose, catecholamines and cortisol were measured first under normocapnia (water PCO2 < 0.5 Torr, 1 Torr = 133.32 Pa), then under hypercapnia (25–35 Torr) and a final return to normocapnia at 19 ± 0.5 °C. Acute (≤ 2h) hypercapnia significantly increased arterial PCO2 (8-fold increase), ventilation frequency (2-fold increase), plasma HCO3 (2.3-fold) and decreased arterial pH (to 7.15 ± 0.02). After 24 h, norepinephrine, epinephrine and cortisol, were significantly increased, and arterial pH reached its nadir (7.10 ± 0.03). During the 72- and 96-h-periods, arterial PCO2 (24 ± 4.4 Torr) and ventilatory frequency (105 ± 5 breaths min−1) stabilized, HCO3 reached its apparent maximum (23.6 ± 0.0 mmol−1), glucose decreased by 32%, and pH increased significantly to 7.31 + 0.03. The return to normocapnia completely restored arterial PCO2 (2.5 ± 0.14 Torr), HCO3 (7.4 ± 0.59 mmol · l−1), ventilation frequency (71 ± 7 breaths · min−1), and pH (7.75 ± 0.04). Overall, hypercapnia produced a respiratory acidosis, hyperventilation, a transient norepinephrine “spike”, and increased plasma catecholamines, cortisol, and arterial PO2. The respiratory acidosis was only partially compensated (35% pH restoration) 96 h after the onset of hypercapnia and resulted in a significantly decreased blood-O2 affinity (Bohr effect), as determined by construction of in vitro blood O2 equilibrium curves at 15 °C and 20 °C. Prolonged exposure to hypercapnia may lead to acid-base disturbances and negatively affect growth of white sturgeon. Accepted: 17 August 1997  相似文献

The aim of this study was to find out whether a low-carbohydrate diet (L-CHO) affects: (1) the capacity for all-out anaerobic exercise, and (2) hormonal and metabolic responses to this type of exercise. To this purpose, eight healthy subjects underwent a 30-s bicycle Wingate test preceded by either 3 days of a controlled mixed diet (130 kJ/kg of body mass daily, 50% carbohydrate, 30% fat, 20% protein) or 3 days of an isoenergetic L-CHO diet (up to 5% carbohydrate, 50% fat, 45% protein) in a randomized order. Before and during 1 h after the exercise venous blood samples were taken for measurement of blood lactate (LA), β-hydroxybutyrate (β-HB), glucose, adrenaline (A), noradrenaline (NA) and insulin levels. Oxygen consumption (O2) was also determined. It was found that the L-CHO diet diminished the mean power output during the 30-s exercise bout [533 (7) W vs 581 (7) W, P < 0.05] without changing the maximal power attained during the first or second 5-s interval of the exercise. In comparison with the data obtained after the consumption of a mixed diet, after the consumption of a L-CHO diet resting plasma concentrations of β-HB [2.38 (0.18) vs 0.23 (0.01) mmol · l−1, P < 0.001] and NA [4.81 (0.68) vs 2.2 (0.31) nmol · l−1, P < 0.05] were higher, while glucose [4.6 (0.1) vs 5.7 (0.2) mmol · l−1, P < 0.05] and insulin concentrations [11.9 (0.9) vs 21.8 (1.8) mU · l−1] were lower. The 1-h post-exercise excess of O2 [9.1 (0.25) vs 10.6 (0.25) l, P < 0.05], and blood LA measured 3 min after the exercise [9.5 (0.4) vs 10.6 (0.5) mmol · l−1, P < 0.05] were lower following the L-CHO treatment, whilst plasma NA and A concentrations reached higher values [2.24 (0.40) vs 1.21 (0.13) nmol · l−1 and 14.30 (1.41) vs 8.20 (1.31) nmol · l−1, P < 0.01, respectively]. In subjects on the L-CHO diet, the plasma β-HB concentration decreased quickly after exercise, attaining ≈30% of the pre-exercise value within 60 min, while insulin and glucose levels were elevated. The main conclusions of this study are: (1) a L-CHO diet is detrimental to anaerobic work capacity, possibly because of a reduced muscle glycogen store and decreased rate of glycolysis; (2) reduced carbohydrate intake for 3 days enhances activity of the sympathoadrenal system at rest and after exercise. To determine if heat exposure alters the hormonal responses to moderate, repeated exercise, 11 healthy male subjects [age = 27.1 (3.0) years; maximal oxygen consumption, O2max = 47.6 (6.2) ml · kg · min−1; mean (SD)] were assigned to four different experimental conditions according to a randomized-block design. While in a thermoneutral (23°C) or heated (40°C, 30% relative humidity) climatic chamber, subjects performed either cycle ergometer exercise (two 30-min bouts at ≈50% O2max, separated by a 45-min recovery interval, CEx and HEx conditions), or remained seated for 3 h (CS and HS conditions). Blood samples were analyzed for various exercise stress hormones [epinephrine (E), norepinephrine (NE), dopamine, cortisol and human growth hormone (hGH)]. Passive heating did not alter the concentrations of any of these hormones significantly. During both environmental conditions, exercise induced significant (P < 0.001) elevations in plasma E, NE and hGH levels. At 23°C during bout 1: E = 393 (199) pmol · l−1 (CEx) vs 174 (85) pmol · l−1 (CS), NE = 4593 (2640) pmol · l−1 (CEx) vs 1548 (505) pmol · l−1 (CS), and hGH = 274 (340) pmol · l−1 (CEx)vs 64 (112) pmol · l−1 (CS). At 40°C, bout 1: E = 596 (346) pmol · l−1 (HEx) vs 323 (181) pmol · l−1 (HS), NE = 7789 (5129) pmol · l−1 (HEx) vs 1527 (605) pmol · l−1 (HS), and hGH = 453 (494) pmol · l−1 (HEx) vs 172 (355) pmol · l−1 (HS). However, concentrations of plasma cortisol were increased only in response to exercise in the heat [HEx = 364 (168) nmol · l−1 vs HS = 295 (114) nmol · l−1). Compared to exercise at room temperature, plasma levels of E, NE and cortisol were all higher during exercise in the heat (P < 0.001 in all cases). The repetition of exercise did not significantly alter the pattern of change in cortisol or hGH levels in either environmental condition. However, repetition of exercise in the heat increased circulatory and psychological stress, with significantly (P < 0.001) higher plasma concentrations of E and NE. These results indicate a differential response of the various stress hormones to heat exposure and repeated moderate exercise. Accepted: 16 April 1997  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare various methods and criteria used to identify the anaerobic threshold (AT), and to correlate the AT obtained with each other and with running performance. Furthermore, a number of additional points throughout the entire range of lactate concentrations [La] were obtained and correlated with performance. A group of 19 runners [mean age 33.7 (SD 9.6) years, height 173 (SD 6.3) cm, body mass 68.3 (SD 5.4) kg, maximal O2 uptake (O2 max ) 55.2 (SD 5.9) ml · kg−1 · min−1] performed a maximal multistage treadmill test (1 km · h−1 every 3.5 min) with blood sampling at the end of each stage while running. All AT points selected (visual [La], 4 mmol · l−1 [La], 1 mmol · l−1 above baseline, log-log breakpoint, and 45° tangent to the exponential regression) were highly correlated one with another and with performance (r > 0.90) even when there were many differences among the AT (P < 0.05). The additional points (ranging from 3 to 8 mmol · l−1 [La], 1 to 6 mmol · l−1 [La] above the baseline, and 30 to 70° tangent to the exponential curve of [La]) were also highly correlated with performance (r > 0.90). These results failed to demonstrate a distinct AT because many points of the curve provided similar information. Intercorrelations and correlations between AT and performance were, however, reduced when AT were expressed as the percentage of maximal treadmill speed obtained at AT or percentage of O2 max . This would indicate that different attributes of aerobic performance (i.e. maximal aerobic power, running economy and endurance) are measured when manipulating units. Thus, coaches should be aware of these results when they prescribe an intensity for training and concentrate more on the physiological consequences of a chosen [La] rather than on a “threshold”.
