A bulk-hybrid population of barley (CC-XXI) was investigated for changes over a period of six generations, in (1) generation means and variances for three quantitative characters (2) phenotypic and genotypic frequencies at several marker loci and (3) the components of selection at several life cycle stages (germination and seedling survival, fertility, fecundity) for the dominant-recessive phenotypic classes at three of the above loci. The changes in mean and variance for the quantitative characters appeared to be due to both directional and stabilizing types of selection. The estimates of selective values from frequency data suggested heterozygote advantage along with unequal homozygote fitnesses at locuss and heterozygote disadvantage at locibl, r andv, from computations based on higher outcrossing rates in the presence of male-steriles.Of the components studied, fertility and fecundity appeared to account for a larger portion of the total selective differential than the pre-adult stages (germination and seedling establishment). Net selective values based on component analysis approximated the selective values obtained from the frequency data for locusr. For locis, andv, however, the two estimates were often quite different, although they generally agreed in direction. The discrepancies between the two sets of estimates were discussed in terms of the complexity of overall measures of fitness.  相似文献

Any release of transgenic organisms into nature is a concern because ecological relationships between genetically engineered organisms and other organisms (including their wild-type conspecifics) are unknown. To address this concern, we developed a method to evaluate risk in which we input estimates of fitness parameters from a founder population into a recurrence model to predict changes in transgene frequency after a simulated transgenic release. With this method, we grouped various aspects of an organism's life cycle into six net fitness components: juvenile viability, adult viability, age at sexual maturity, female fecundity, male fertility, and mating advantage. We estimated these components for wild-type and transgenic individuals using the fish, Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes). We generalized our model's predictions using various combinations of fitness component values in addition to our experimentally derived estimates. Our model predicted that, for a wide range of parameter values, transgenes could spread in populations despite high juvenile viability costs if transgenes also have sufficiently high positive effects on other fitness components. Sensitivity analyses indicated that transgene effects on age at sexual maturity should have the greatest impact on transgene frequency, followed by juvenile viability, mating advantage, female fecundity, and male fertility, with changes in adult viability, resulting in the least impact.  相似文献

Maladaptive hybridization is hypothesized to be an important force driving the evolution of reproductive isolation between closely related species. Because the magnitude and direction of selection can vary across a life cycle, an accurate understanding of the ubiquity of reinforcement requires fitness to be estimated across the life cycle, but the literature is surprisingly depauperate of such studies. We present fitness estimates of laboratory‐raised hybrids between the chorus frogs Pseudacris feriarum and Pseudacris nigrita—two species that have undergone reproductive character displacement where they come into secondary contact. By studying viability, mating success, and fertility across the life cycle, we find strong support for reinforcement as the force driving displacement in this system. Specifically, we find hybrid fitness is reduced by 44%. This reduction results from both sexual selection against hybrid males and natural selection on male fertility, but not viability selection. Sexual selection against hybrid males is four times stronger than natural selection. Hybrid female fitness is not reduced, however, suggesting that Haldane's rule may be operating in this system if males are heterogametic. We also found higher variation in hybrid male fertilization success relative to P. feriarum males, suggesting that the hybrid incompatibility genes are polymorphic within one or both of the parent species.  相似文献

Male fertility of interspecific hybrids was analysed in one F1 and two backcrossed progenies originating from a cross between Coffea canephora and Coffea heterocalyx. Male fertility was tested using pollen stainability with acetic carmine. The results showed a marked decline in fertility at the F1 level, and fertility was almost fully restored after two backcrosses. The computed broad-sense heritability represented 47% of the variance. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) locations and effects on pollen viability were estimated using an amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) genetic linkage map constructed in the segregating BC1 population. Three significant QTLs (LOD>3 and p < 0.001 by ANOVA) were detected for pollen viability, two of which were responsible for the bimodal distribution of pollen viability in the segregating population. One QTL was involved in fertility variations among fertile BC1 plants. Fertility inheritance is discussed in relation with previously demonstrated chromosomal sterility in Coffea hybrids and the effect of detected QTLs. The potential use of genetic markers to overcome sterility in interspecific hybrids is also discussed.  相似文献

Multiple-regression techniques for measuring phenotypic selection have been used in a large number of recent field studies. One benefit of this technique is its ability to discern the direct action of selection on traits by removing effects of correlated traits. However, covariation among traits expressed at different stages in an organism's life history is often poorly estimated because individuals that die before reaching adulthood cannot be measured as adults. Accurate estimates of trait covariances are necessary for the correct interpretation of the direct action of selection on a trait. If phenotypic characters expressed at different life-history stages are of interest, and mortality occurs between stages, the components of the selection model will be biased by not including those individuals that died (the “invisible fraction”).  相似文献

The inverted gene arrangements of Drosophila pseudoobscura were used by Th. Dobzhansky in pioneering analyses of natural selection. Recent experiments have shed light on the mechanisms of selection contributing to the balanced polymorphism for the gene arrangements. In experimental populations, both major components of fitness, viability and fertility, are frequency dependent, and rare genotypes often have a selective advantage. Viabilities are also density dependent. The frequency dependence and density dependence of the fitness components are not universal. Some karyotypes are strongly influenced by frequency or density, some are slightly influenced, and some do not appear to be influenced at all. The role of heterozygote advantage in the selection on the gene arrangements is not clear. It is probably one important element in the overall selection, but viability and fertility do not always show a heterozygote advantage. Viability and fertility components of selection seem to be about equally important in changing inversion frequencies. Male mating success is an important component of selection in natural populations, and in one population rare male karyotypes have been found to have a pronounced mating advantage.  相似文献

Fertility estimation: a review of past experience and future prospects   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Fertility has many components and stages which require that males and females be functionally capable of carrying out all critical stages if each generational reproductive cycle is to be completed. To accomplish this, the male must produce and ejaculate normal fertile sperm. The female must produce, store and ovulate normal fertilizable oocytes. Furthermore, the female must provide a reproductive system compatible with sperm transport, capacitation, and fertilization of the oocytes, embryo and fetal development, and finally birth of healthy young. Reproductive success or failure at several of these points can be estimated quantitatively on a population basis, and in a few situations on an individual basis. It is important that fertility estimates be determined accurately and with precision to be most useful to researchers and managers of animal enterprises. Many studies have underestimated the biological relationship of fertility to other traits because the estimates lacked precision. Many in vitro manipulations of sperm in artificial insemination, of gametes in various assisted reproductive technologies, and of embryos in embryo transfer are utilized in animal breeding programs. Accurate estimation of reproductive efficiency of these in vitro procedures also is important. Conditions surrounding different sets of fertility estimates almost certainly will be different. These conditions should be described as precisely as possible, and appropriate controls included in all experiments. When possible, experiments should be replicated over time and place to determine the repeatability of the various criteria used to estimate fertility and reproductive efficiency. Advances in genomic information and molecular biology should facilitate characterizing more fully inherent potential fertility of animals at birth. In vitro tests will improve, and automated techniques will facilitate making multiple determinations possible on a large scale. Reliability of fertility estimates will increase, with the potential for enhanced animal reproductive performance through more accurate selection, genetic engineering, and enlightened animal care. Simultaneously, it is important to recognize that prediction of future fertility is more hazardous than estimating fertility, as a completely new set of circumstances may occur which are not predictable. Because fertility estimation may be applied under a myriad of conditions, principles and factors affecting fertility will be emphasized in this review as being more useful than a compilation of numerical examples.  相似文献

Two hundred and ninety second chromosomes extracted from a natural population of Drosophila melanogaster were analyzed to estimate the genetic variance of viability and its components by means of a partial diallel cross (Design II of Comstock and Robinson 1952). The additive and dominance variances are estimated to be 0.009 and 0.0012. Using the dominance variance and the inbreeding depression, the effective number of overdominant loci contributing to the variance in viability is estimated to be very small, a dozen or less. Either the actual number of loci is small, or the distribution of viabilities is strongly skewed with a large majority of very weakly selected loci. The additive variance in viability appears to be too large to be accounted for by recurrent harmful mutants or by overdominant loci at equilibrium with various genetic parameters estimated independently. The excess might be due to frequency-dependent selection, to negative correlations between viability and fertility, or possibly to the presence of a mutator. The selection for viability and fertility, or possibly to the presence of a mutator. The selection for viability at the average polymorphic locus must be very slight, of the order of 10(-3) or less.  相似文献

The magnitude and direction of phenotypic selection on emergence date and seedling size in Erigeron annuus was measured to determine the heterogeneity of selection among sites and the proportion of fitness variance explained by seedling size and emergence date. Three disturbance treatments (open, annual vegetation, perennial vegetation) were imposed to test the hypothesis of stronger selection on seedlings in competitive environments. Selection was most heterogeneous early in the life cycle, with significant spatial heterogeneity in the magnitude of selection on a local scale. The disturbance treatments affected only fecundity selection gradients and selection was strongest in open plots. Significant variation in the sign of selection differentials on emergence date was observed for establishment and fall viability selection episodes; at later stages selection varied in magnitude but not direction. Seedlings in the earliest cohort experienced high mortality during establishment, but increased size and fecundity later in the life cycle. Both stabilizing and disruptive selection on emergence date were observed during establishment, but in general selection was purely directional. At Stony Brook most selection on emergence date operated indirectly through seedling size, whereas at the Weld Preserve direct selection was stronger. There were persistent effects of both seedling emergence date and rosette diameter on adult fitness components, and October rosette diameter explained 18% of the total phenotypic variance in fecundity. Overall, viability fitness components were much more important than fecundity selection. Winter survivorship was the single most important episode of selection.  相似文献

Inbreeding depression is one of the hypotheses explaining the maintenance of females within gynodioecious plant populations. However, the measurement of fitness components in selfed and outcrossed progeny depends on life-cycle stage and the history of inbreeding. Comparative data indicate that strong inbreeding depression is more likely to occur at later life-cycle stages. We used hermaphrodite individuals of Silene vulgaris originating from three populations located in different valleys in the Swiss Alps to investigate the effect of two generations of self- and cross-fertilization on fitness components among successive stages of the life cycle in a glasshouse experiment. We detected significant inbreeding depression for most life-cycle stages including: the number of viable and aborted seeds per fruit, probability of germination, above ground biomass, probability of flowering, number of flowers per plant, flower size and pollen viability. Overall, the intensity of inbreeding depression increased among successive stages of the life cycle and cumulative inbreeding depression was significantly stronger in the first generation (delta approximately 0.5) compared with the second generation (delta approximately 0.35). We found no evidence for synergistic epistasis in our experiment. Our finding of more intense inbreeding depression during later stages of the life cycle may help to explain the maintenance of females in gynodioecious populations of S. vulgaris because purging of genetic load is less likely to occur.  相似文献

Metamorphosis is a common life-cycle transition in organisms as diverse as amphibians, insects, fishes and crustaceans, and the timing of this transition often affects an individual's fitness. Here, we measured age and size at metamorphosis in laboratory-reared individuals of the freshwater copepod, Diaptomus leptopus , and then followed individuals over their entire life cycle to assess the fitness consequences of variation in age and size at metamorphosis. In 3 separate experiments, individuals were raised in different food conditions: low food (0.2 μg C/ml) switched to high food (0.7 μg C/ml), or high food switched to low food, at several different larval and juvenile stages. Control individuals were reared on high or low food concentrations over their entire life cycles. For each individual, we measured age and size at metamorphosis and age and size at maturity; for females, we also measured total lifetime egg production, longevity, and calculated a composite fitness measure, λ. Statistical analyses showed no significant effects of age or size at metamorphosis on these same traits measured at maturity, or on the fitness components we estimated. The first individuals to mature had the highest total egg production and individual fitness; differences in body size at maturation explained none of the variation observed in fitness components. Our results show that metamorphosis was uncoupled from maturity and from fitness components by growth and development achieved during the juvenile phase of the life cycle, and support the conclusion that fitness consequences of metamorphosis depend fundamentally on the organization of an organism's life cycle. They also suggest that body size plays a different life-history role in these organisms than is recognized in most poikilotherms, and suggest the hypothesis, based on laboratory experiments, that selection may act primarily on juvenile developmental rates in field populations.  相似文献

Incomplete information regarding both selection regimes and the genetic basis of fitness limits our understanding of adaptive evolution. Among‐year variation in the genetic basis of fitness is rarely quantified, and estimates of selection are typically based on single components of fitness, thus potentially missing conflicting selection acting during other life‐history stages. Here, we examined among‐year variation in selection on a key life‐history trait and the genetic basis of fitness covering the whole life cycle in the annual plant Arabidopsis thaliana. We planted freshly matured seeds of >200 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross between two locally adapted populations (Italy and Sweden), and both parental genotypes at the native site of the Swedish population in three consecutive years. We quantified selection against the nonlocal Italian genotype, mapped quantitative trait loci (QTL) for fitness and its components, and quantified selection on timing of germination during different life stages. In all 3 years, the local Swedish genotype outperformed the nonlocal Italian genotype. However, both the contribution of early life stages to relative fitness, and the effects of fitness QTL varied among years. Timing of germination was under conflicting selection through seedling establishment vs. adult survival and fecundity, and both the direction and magnitude of net selection varied among years. Our results demonstrate that selection during early life stages and the genetic basis of fitness can vary markedly among years, emphasizing the need for multiyear studies considering the whole life cycle for a full understanding of natural selection and mechanisms maintaining local adaptation.  相似文献

The evolutionary relationships between three major components of Darwinian fitness, development rate, growth rate and preadult survival, were estimated using a comparison of 55 distinct populations ofDrosophila melanogaster variously selected for age-specific fertility, environmental-stress tolerance and accelerated development. Development rate displayed a strong net negative evolutionary correlation with weight at eclosion across all selection treatments, consistent with the existence of a size-versus-time tradeoff between these characters. However, within the data set, the magnitude of the evolutionary correlation depended upon the particular selection treatments contrasted. A previously proposed tradeoff between preadult viability and growth rate was apparent only under weak selection for juvenile fitness components. Direct selection for rapid development led to sharp reductions in both growth rates and viability. These data add to the mounting results from experimental evolution that illustrate the sensitivity of evolutionary correlations to (i) genotype-by-environment (G X E) interaction, (ii) complex functional-trait interactions, and (iii) character definition. Instability, disappearance and reversal of patterns of genetic covariation often occur over short evolutionary time frames and as the direct product of selection, rather than some stochastic process. We suggest that the functional architecture of fitness is a rapidly evolving matrix with reticulate properties, a matrix that we understand only poorly.  相似文献

Mathematical models predict that to maintain androdioecious populations, males must have at least twice the fitness of male function in hermaphrodites. To understand how androdioecy is maintained in Laguncularia racemosa (white mangrove), outcrossing, inbreeding depression, and relative male fitness were estimated in two androdioecious populations and one hermaphroditic population. Outcrossing was estimated based on length of pollinator foraging bout and pollen carryover assumptions. Inbreeding depression was measured at three life stages: fruit set, seedling emergence, and seedling survivorship. The relative fitnesses of males and the male component of hermaphrodites were compared at these three stages and at the pollen production stage. Male frequency predictions generated by Lloyd's model were compared with observed frequencies in two androdioecious subpopulations. Outcrossing estimates were moderate for all populations (0.29-0.66). Inbreeding depression varied among populations (-0.03-0.86), but the strength of inbreeding depression did not increase with male frequency. Males produced significantly more flowers/inflorescence than hermaphrodites, but pollen production/flower did not differ. Male and hermaphroditic progeny did not differ significantly at other life stages. Populations of white mangrove with male plants were functionally androdioecious. Lloyd's model accurately predicted male frequency in one androdioecious subpopulation, but underestimated male frequency in the second subpopulation.  相似文献

The pattern of selection acting in nature on the chromosomal polymorphism of the cactophilic species Drosophila buzzatii was investigated by comparing inversion and karyotypic frequencies through four different life-cycle stages: adult males, eggs, third-instar larvae, and immature adults. All population samples were obtained in June 1981 at an old Opuntia ficus-indica plantation near Carboneras, Spain. The analysis rests on several assumptions which are explicitly set forth and discussed. The results, if these assumptions prove true, indicate strong directional selection for larval viability acting on the second-chromosome karyotypes and also suggest selective differences in fecundity and longevity. Heterotic selection, however, cannot be ruled out for other fitness components such as male mating success. This kind of selection could be operating on the fourth-chromosome polymorphism as well. Some gene arrangements showed significant and opposite changes in frequency at different parts of the life cycle, thus demonstrating endocyclic selection.  相似文献

In an urban population with widespread birth control practice the distribution of the number of pregnancies, births and abortions was studied in a cohort of women of completed fertility. The mean number of pregnancies per woman was 4.03 +/- 0.08 (sigma = = 2.98); the mean number of births - 1.12 +/- 0.02 (sigma = 0.77). 7.4% of women which had completed their reproductive performance had no pregnancies and 19.5% - no births. The Crow's Index of the Opportunity for Selection and its components connected with differential fertility and differential mortality were estimated. In the population under study two components of selection - selection at the prenatal stages and selection associated with infertility - are shown to be still significant. Such type of selection is exemplified by investigation of couples suffering from repeated spontaneous abortions.  相似文献

Metamorphosis is common in animals, yet the genetic associations between life cycle stages are poorly understood. Given the radical changes that occur at metamorphosis, selection may differ before and after metamorphosis, and the extent that genetic associations between pre- and post-metamorphic traits constrain evolutionary change is a subject of considerable interest. In some instances, metamorphosis may allow the genetic decoupling of life cycle stages, whereas in others, metamorphosis could allow complementary responses to selection across the life cycle. Using a diallel breeding design, we measured viability at four ontogenetic stages (embryo, larval, juvenile and adult viability), in the ascidian Ciona intestinalis and examined the orientation of additive genetic variation with respect to the metamorphic boundary. We found support for one eigenvector of G (gobsmax), which contrasted larval viability against embryo viability and juvenile viability. Target matrix rotation confirmed that while gobsmax shows genetic associations can extend beyond metamorphosis, there is still considerable scope for decoupled phenotypic evolution. Therefore, although genetic associations across metamorphosis could limit that range of phenotypes that are attainable, traits on either side of the metamorphic boundary are capable of some independent evolutionary change in response to the divergent conditions encountered during each life cycle stage.  相似文献

Natural selection has been studied for several decades, resulting in the computation of thousands of selection estimates. Although the importance of environmental conditions on selection has often been suggested, published estimates rarely take into account the effects of environmental heterogeneity on selection patterns. Here, we estimated linear and nonlinear viability selection gradients on morphological traits of 12-day old nestlings in a wild population of tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) across a large-scale heterogeneous study system in southern Québec, Canada. We assessed the environmental drivers of nestling survival and evaluated their effects on strength and direction of selection gradients. Separate analyses of environmental variables showed that high temperatures and heavy rainfall caused stronger positive linear selection on morphological traits. Weaker linear selection was also measured in more extensively cultivated areas. Both strength and shape of nonlinear quadratic and correlational components of selection were modified by environmental variables. Considering all environmental variables revealed that precipitation since hatching affected patterns of linear selection on traits, while temperatures since hatching shaped nonlinear selection patterns. Our study underlines the importance of quantifying linear and nonlinear natural selection under various environmental conditions and how the evolutionary response of traits may be affected by ongoing human-induced environmental changes.  相似文献

Reciprocal crosses between species often display an asymmetry in the fitness of F1 hybrids. This pattern, referred to as isolation asymmetry or Darwin's corollary to Haldane's rule, is a general feature of reproductive isolation in plants, yet factors determining its magnitude and direction remain unclear. We evaluated reciprocal species crosses between two naturally hybridizing diploid species of Arabidopsis to assess the degree of isolation asymmetry at different postmating life stages. We found that pollen from Arabidopsis arenosa will usually fertilize ovules from Arabidopsis lyrata; the reverse receptivity being less complete. Maternal A. lyrata parents set more F1 hybrid seed, but germinate at lower frequency, reversing the asymmetry. As predicted by theory, A. lyrata (the maternal parent with lower seed viability in crosses) exhibited accelerated chloroplast evolution, indicating that cytonuclear incompatibilities may play a role in reproductive isolation. However, this direction of asymmetrical reproductive isolation is not replicated in natural suture zones, where delayed hybrid breakdown of fertility at later developmental stages, or later‐acting selection against A. arenosa maternal hybrids (unrelated to hybrid fertility, e.g., substrate adaptation) may be responsible for an excess of A. lyrata maternal hybrids. Exogenous selection rather than cytonuclear incompatibilities thus shapes the asymmetrical postmating isolation in nature.  相似文献

The breeding of polyploid rice made no breakthrough for a long time because of low seed set. The discovery and application of polyploid meiosis stability (PMeS) material played a pivotal role in solving this problem. Our results indicated that genome duplication led to different outcomes in different rice cultivars in terms of pollen fertility, viability, and the accumulation of important physiological substances such as free proline and endogenous hormones. Pollen from the PMeS HN2026-4X lines showed a high fertility and viability similar to those of HN2026-2X (4X indicates tetraploid while 2X indicates the diploid), whereas both rates decreased dramatically in Balilla-4X. The results of pollen microstructure and ultrastructure investigations suggested that the pollen development pattern in HN2026-4X appeared normal at all stages, but a lot of changes were discovered in Balilla-4X. Stable meiosis, timely tapetum degradation, and normal mitochondria development were critical factors insuring the high frequency pollen fertility of PMeS rice. The free proline content increased markedly in HN2026-4X as compared to HN2026-2X, but it was decreased for Balilla-4X. Genome duplication effects on regulating endogenous hormones accumulation in pollen were evident, resulting in the clear difference between PMeS HN2026-4X and Balilla-4X. The accumulation of IAA, ZR, and GA in mature pollen distinguished HN2026-4X from Balilla-4X, which was linked to normal pollen development. In particular, the excessive accumulation of ABA at the meiosis stage may be correlated to disorganized meiosis in Balilla-4X. All the results provided unequivocal evidence that genome duplication played specific roles in the normal pollen development of PMeS HN2026-4X.  相似文献
