In the subtropical finch, spotted munia (Lonchura punctulata) circannual rhythms (of gonads, fattening, feeding) have been demonstrated in an information-free environment of continuous illumination (LL), rendering it an ideal model for research on the physiology of the circannual clock. In an attempt to understand the involvement, if any, of the circadian system in the genesis of circannual rhythms, we studied the effect of pinealectomy (LL 15 lux) and strong continuous illumination (LL 300 lux), both known to abolish circadian rhythms, on the circadian perch-hopping rhythm and on the circannual rhythm of reproduction and fattening in the same birds. While both pinealectomy and LL 300 lux treatments abolished the circadian rhythm of motor activity, they had no effect on the circannual rhythms of gonadal size and fattening. If the endogenous circadian rhythm in perch-hopping can be taken to reflect the circadian clock mechanism associated with gonadal functioning, present results suggest that circannual rhythm of reproduction in spotted munia is independent of circadian events.  相似文献

The frequency demultiplication hypothesis (FDH) posits that circannual rhythms are generated from circadian cycles by frequency transformation to the lower-frequency rhythm. To test the FDH, we determined the periods of the circannual body mass and estrous cycles of golden-mantled ground squirrels with circadian locomotor activity rhythms entrained to 23-, 24-, or 25-hr days (T-cycles). Circannual period length did not differ among squirrels entrained to the different T-cycles; intergroup ranges were 298-314 days and 303-312 days, respectively, for body mass and estrus. These results are not consistent with the FDH and suggest instead that separate mechanisms generate circadian and circannual rhythms. In ground squirrels the circannual system influences circadian organization, but a reciprocal influence of circadian on circannual rhythms has yet to be demonstrated.  相似文献

The possible occurrence of circadian and circannual rhythms in the plasma concentrations of the following enzymes of lysosomal origin was assessed: beta-D-N-acetylglucosaminidase (EC 3.2.1.30) beta-D-glucuronidase (EC 3.2.1.31), beta-D-glucosidase (EC 3.2.1.21), beta-D-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.22), alpha-D-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.23), alpha-L-fucosidase (EC 3.2.1) and alpha-D-mannosidase (EC 3.2.1.24). The circadian rhythm was studied in 16 women (aged: 17-24 years) and 13 men (age: 23 years) volunteers; the circannual rhythm, in 10 women and 8 men (age: 20-25 years). The circadian rhythm was detected in all the tested enzymes of women, and only in alpha-D-galactosidase, beta-D-glucosidase, alpha-D-mannosidase and beta-D-acetylglucosaminidase of men. A statistically significant difference between genders in the circadian rhythm was exhibited by beta-D-galactosidase (MESOR; amplitude) beta-D-glucosidase (MESOR; amplitude; acrophase) beta-D-N-acetylglucosaminidase, beta-D-glucuronidase and alpha-D-galactosidase (MESOR) and alpha-L-fucosidase (amplitude, acrophase). A circannual rhythm was detected in all the tested enzymes with the exception of beta-D-glucuronidase and beta-D-N-acetylglucosaminidase; no statistically significant difference between genders was detected. The group rhythms of some of the enzymes (alpha-D-galactosidase, beta-D-glucosidase, beta-D-galactosidase) showed similar values of both circadian and circannual acrophases, suggesting that they may subjected as a group to the same chronobiological coordination, possibly mediated by hormones. The chronobiological rhythms of lysosomal enzymes were different from those of lactate dehydrogenase and alpha 1-antitrypsin, indicating that these rhythms are not merely reflecting fluctuations of the water content of plasma. No in-phase relationship was observed between the circadian and circannual rhythms of plasma cortisol and those of the tested lysosomal enzymes, excluding a direct chronobiological and possibly functional relationship between this hormone and lysosomal enzymes.  相似文献

A group of fourteen men (73 ± 5 yr of age), and eighteen women (77 ± 7 yr of age) institutionalized at the Berceni Clinical Hospital, Bucharest, Romania, were studied over a 24-hr span once during each season (winter, spring, summer and fall). All subjects followed a diurnal activity pattern with rest at night and ate three meals per day with breakfast at about 0830, lunch at about 1300 and dinner at about 1830. The meals were similar, although not identical for all subjects during all seasons. On each day of sampling blood was collected at 4-hr intervals over a 24-hr span. Seventeen hormonal variables were determined by radioimmunoassay. Statistically significant circadian rhythms were detected and quantitated by population mean cosinor analysis in pooled data from all four seasons in both sexes for ACTH, aldosterone, Cortisol, C-peptide, dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-S), immunoreactive insulin, prolactin, 17-OH progesterone, testosterone, total T4 and TSH. In women, estradiol and progesterone also were determined and showed a circadian rhythm during all seasons. Total T, and FSH showed circadian rhythm detection by cosinor analysis in the men only; LH showed no consistent circadian rhythm as group phenomenon in men or women.

A circannual rhythm was detected using the circadian means of each subject at each season as input for the population mean cosinor in the women for ACTH, C-peptide, DHEA-S, FSH, LH, progesterone, 17-OH progesterone and TSH. In the men, a circannual rhythm was detected for ACTH, FSH, insulin, LH, testosterone and T3. There were phase differences between men and women in ACTH, FSH and LH. In those functions in which both the circadian and circannual rhythms were statistically significant, a comparison of the amplitudes showed in the women a higher circannual rather than circadian amplitude for DHEA-S. In 17-OH progesterone, TSH and C-peptide, the circadian amplitude in women was larger. In men, the circannual amplitude of T3 was larger than the circadian amplitude and in insulin the circadian amplitude was larger than the circannual amplitude. There was no statistically significant difference between the circadian and circannual amplitudes in the women in ACTH and progesterone and in the men in ACTH and testosterone.  相似文献

In serially independent samples of blood from apparently healthy subjects controlled as to clock-hour of blood withdrawal but not as to any circannual changes in circadian state, human erythrocyte adenosine aminohydrolase undergoes a statistically significant circannual rhythm, which may or may not be aliased. An endogenous circannual rhythm drives the seasonal reproductive cycle of a broad spectrum of species. This rhythm is synchronized to the seasons (i.e., entrained) by photoperiod, which acts by regulating the circadian pattern of melatonin secretion from the pineal gland. Prior work has revealed that melatonin patterns secreted in spring/summer entrain the circannual rhythm of reproductive neuroendocrine activity in sheep, whereas secretions in winter do not. The goal of this study was to determine if inability of the winter-melatonin pattern to entrain the rhythm is due to the specific melatonin pattern secreted in winter or to the stage of the circannual rhythm at that time of year. Either a summer- or a winter-melatonin pattern was infused for 70 days into pinealectomized ewes, centered around the summer solstice, when an effective stimulus readily entrains the rhythm. The ewes were ovariectomized and treated with constant-release estradiol implants, and circannual cycles of reproductive neuroendocrine activity were monitored by serum LH concentrations. Only the summer-melatonin pattern entrained the circannual reproductive rhythm. The inability of the winter pattern to do so indicates that the mere presence of a circadian melatonin pattern, in itself, is insufficient for entrainment. Rather, the characteristics of the melatonin pattern, in particular a pattern that mimics the photoperiodic signals of summer, determines entrainment of the circannual rhythm of reproductive neuroendocrine activity in the ewe.  相似文献

Circadian and circannual variations of Testosterone, FSH and LH secretions, other than Oral Body Temperature (OBT) have been studied in four healthy males. OBT showed a constant circadian rhythm with an acrophase located in the afternoon. Plasma Testosterone exhibited both a circadian (acrophase = hr 09,28) and a circannual rhythm (acrophase = 22 february); plasma FSH also showed a circannual rhythm (acrophase = 13 february). By mean chronogram +/- SEM we documented the highest LH levels in December and the lowest in February. These observations would suggest the hypothesis that the winter could be the period in which the hypophysis-gonadal axis in young males exhibits its maximal activity as previously documented for other hormones.  相似文献

The incidence of ulcer perforation in 1480 patients treated in the Bergen area of Norway between 1935 and 1990 was analyzed for daily (circa-dian), weekly (circaseptan), and yearly (circannual) time effects. A circadian rhythm was found overall that was reproducible and fairly stable across seasons, decades, and days of the week. After subgrouping, a circadian rhythm was found in younger patients, males, and duodenal perforations, while a 12h (circasemidian) rhythm characterized ulcer perforation for women and for gastric ulcers. Duodenal perforations showed highest incidence in the afternoon, while gastric perforations showed a major peak around noon and a secondary peak near midnight. For duodenal ulcer perforation, the circannual pattern was characterized by a 6-month rhythm, with significantly higher incidence in May-June-July and in November-December in most subgroups. A circaseptan rhythm was not found, but there was a significantly higher incidence on Thursday-Friday as compared to Sunday-Monday. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the perforation of an ulcer thus seemed to show pronounced circadian and 6-month rhythmic variations, much less so circaseptan or circannual rhythms. While it is likely that exogenous environmental and/or societal factors play a significant role, variations in ulcer perforation may be related to endogenous biological rhythms in pathophysiological factors since the circadian pattern of duodenal perforations follows that for gastric acidity. Knowledge of the temporal patterns in peptic ulcer perforation and associated pathophysiologic factors should prove useful in optimizing the chronotherapeutic management of ulcer disease.  相似文献

We know that entrainment, a stable phase relationship with an environmental cycle, must be established for a biological clock to function properly. Phase response curves (PRCs), which are plots of phase shifts that result as a function of the phase of a stimulus, have been created to examine the mode of entrainment. In circadian rhythms, single-light pulse PRCs have been obtained by giving a light pulse to various phases of a free-running rhythm under continuous darkness. This successfully explains the entrainment to light-dark cycles. Some organisms show circannual rhythms. In some of these, changes in photoperiod entrain the circannual rhythms. However, no single-pulse PRCs have been created. Here we show the PRC to a long-day pulse superimposed for 4 weeks over constant short days in the circannual pupation rhythm in the varied carpet beetle Anthrenus verbasci. Because the shape of that PRC closely resembles that of the Type 0 PRC with large phase shifts in circadian rhythms, we suggest that an oscillator having a common feature in the phase response with the circadian clock, produces a circannual rhythm.  相似文献

Autorhythmometry of blood pressure by an individual over an age-span of 67 to 72 years showed a strong circadian rhythm superimposed upon significant circaseptan and circannual rhythms. Automatic BP monitoring with an Arteriosonde throughout 24-hour spans on 4 separate occasions, before and during treatment, also indicated a prominent circadian BP rhythm and a treatment-related reduction in circadian mesor. The concept of a blood pressure mesor reference for the antimesor-hypertensive treatment constitutes a valuable guideline in the control of "familial" mesor-hypertension.  相似文献

In golden-mantled ground squirrels, phase angles of entrainment of circadian locomotor activity to a fixed light-dark cycle differ markedly between subjective summer and winter. A change in ambient temperature affects entrainment only during subjective winter when it also produces pronounced effects on body temperature (Tb). It was previously proposed that variations in Tb are causally related to the circannual rhythm in circadian entrainment. To test this hypothesis, wheel-running activity and Tb were monitored for 12 to 14 months in castrated male ground squirrels housed in a 14:10 LD photocycle at 21 degrees C. Animals were treated with testosterone implants that eliminated hibernation and prevented the marked winter decline in Tb; these squirrels manifested circannual changes in circadian entrainment indistinguishable from those of untreated animals. Both groups exhibited pronounced changes in phase angle and alpha of circadian wheel-running and Tb rhythms. Seasonal variation in Tb is not necessary for circannual changes in circadian organization of golden-mantled ground squirrels.  相似文献

Endocrine biorhythms are classified according to the period time, as one of the most characteristic properties of biorhythms. Each endocrine organ has parallel more than one biorhythms with different period time (e. g. circadian and circannual rhythms). The time of acrophase of the biorhythms at the different endocrine organs is fairly variant. This review summarizes the rhythmic function of the THS-thyroid, gonadotrophic-gonadal and ACTH-adrenocortical systems. Pineal gland plays an integrative role in the regulation of rhythmic function of the endocrine system. The melatonin secretion of this gland also reveals conspicuous circadian and circannual rhythms both in mammals and in birds. Mammalian pineal is functional only if its peripheral sympathetic innervation from the superior cervical ganglion is intact. In contrast, melatonin secretion and its circadian rhythm is also maintained in birds under isolated conditions (explanted into an in vitro superfusion system). The 24 hours period time of melatonin circadian rhythm can not be changed by light impulses. The phases of the circadian rhythm, however, can be turned by changing the time of environmental light-dark phases. The wavelength of the artificial light used for reversal of circadian rhythm is an important factor. The development of the entrainment and synchronization of the circadian melatonin rhythm in birds is independent of the rhythmic day-night changes in environmental lighting condition. The differences in the main elements of the biological clock between mammals and birds are discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Circadian and circannual rhythms influence not only the environment, but also human physiology. In times of increasing numbers of couples struggling with infertility, and thus increasing demand for successful assisted reproduction, the aim of our study was to evaluate circadian and circannual rhythms and their association with semen quality. A total of 12 245 semen samples from 7068 men, collected at the andrology laboratory of the Department of Reproductive Endocrinology, University Hospital Zurich, between 1994 and 2015, were uniformly analysed in terms of sperm concentration, total sperm count, progressive motility and normal morphology. On the basis of these four parameters, we retrospectively examined the circadian and circannual changes of semen quality. The Mann–Whitney U test and multiple linear regression analysis were used for the statistical evaluation. The semen samples collected in the early morning before 7:30 a.m. showed the highest levels in sperm concentration, total sperm count and normal morphology, all with statistical significance. Progressive motility did not show any significant alterations based on circadian rhythm. Furthermore, a significant increase in sperm concentration and total sperm count was found in spring, with significant decreases in the summer. The highest percentage of normal morphology was found in summer. For progressive motility, no significant seasonal variation could be demonstrated. Male semen quality varies with both circadian and circannual rhythms. Collection of semen in the early morning, where semen quality was highest, can be used to improve natural fertility as well as fertility resulting from assisted reproduction.  相似文献

Circannual rhythms are innately timed long-term (tau ≈ 12 months) cycles of physiology and behavior, crucial for life in habitats ranging from the equator to the Poles. Here the authors propose that circannual rhythm generation depends on tissue-autonomous, reiterated cycles of cell division, functional differentiation, and cell death. They see the feedback control influencing localized stem cell niches as crucial to this cyclical histogenesis hypothesis. Analogous to multi-oscillator circadian organization, circannual rhythm generation occurs in multiple tissues with hypothalamic and pituitary sites serving as central pacemakers. Signals including day length, nutrition, and social factors can synchronize circannual rhythms through hormonal influences, notably via the thyroid and glucocorticoid axes, which have profound effects on histogenesis. The authors offer 4 arguments in support of this hypothesis: (1) Cyclical histogenesis is a prevalent process in seasonal remodeling of physiology. It operates over long time domains and exhibits tissue autonomy in its regulation. (2) Experiments in which selected peripheral endocrine signals are held constant indicate that circannual rhythms are not primarily the product of interacting hormonal feedback loops. (3) Hormones known to control cell proliferation, differentiation, and organogenesis profoundly affect circannual rhythm expression. (4) The convergence point between photoperiodic input pathways and circannual rhythm expression occurs in histogenic regions of the hypothalamus and pituitary. In this review, the authors discuss how testing this hypothesis will depend on the use of cellular/molecular tools and animal models borrowed from developmental biology and neural stem cell research.  相似文献

Circadian stage-dependent effects characterize synthetic ACTH 1-17 preparation (HOE 433 = Synchrodyn 1-17), tested in mice and rats, with reference notably to corticosterone and aldosterone production in vitro and to the behavior of rhythms in these two corticoids as an aspect of the adrenal cortical pacemaker of the circadian system. The possibility to advance or delay the rhythm in serum corticosterone by ACTH 1-17 also is demonstrated, as is a differential behavior of the circadian rhythm in serum aldosterone. Differences in timing of circadian corticosterone and aldosterone responses also are described and await further scrutiny for ultradian and infradian (notably circannual) modulation.  相似文献
