- 1 Hickling Broad, a shallow, brackish lake in England, changed from dominance by submerged aquatic plants to dominance by phytoplankton in the 1970s. These changes were ascribed to the effects of guanotrophicatioh by black-headed gulls, and increased salinity which together resulted in fish kills caused by a toxic alga, Prymnesium parvum. A mysid, Neomysis integer, was believed to be important in switching the system to plankton dominance through its presumed selective feeding on Cladocera and increasing population size as fish predation decreased.
- 2 Studies on laboratory predation rates of the mysid on Cladocera and on the population dynamics, predation rates and diet of the mysid and the populations of the major zooplankter, Eurytemora affinis in the Broad in the 1980s, have shown that the former explanations were incomplete. The mysid could have markedly reduced the cladoceran community, for it has potentially high predation rates, but Cladocera were probably lost through salinization. Neomysis feeds efficiently on Eurytentora affinis, but the latter reproduces rapidly and its populations are unlikely to be controlled by mysid predation. Nauplii and small copepodites are selectively taken. Alternative and probably major food sources for the mysid are periphyton and benthic algae and detritus.
- 3 Roach and bream readily take the mysid but the present fish stock in the Broad is very low and can now exert minimal pressure on the mysid population. An invertebrate predator on the mysid, Palaemometes varians, is also unlikely to have major effects. The former model of the operation of the Broad's ecosystem needs reconsideration in view of the findings.

The variability in water chemistry of samples taken on a monthly basis (October 1990–December 1991) from 31 shallow, artificial ponds in southeast England was examined. The survey revealed great within-year variation in the concentrations of nutrients. Total phosphorus (TP) concentrations displayed no overall marked seasonal pattern, although many sites experienced summer peaks with a simultaneous increase in soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentrations, indicating that sediment P release occurred. SRP and nitrate (NO3–N) concentrations displayed a marked seasonal pattern similar to that observed in deep, stratifying lakes, with 55% and 94% of the sites surveyed, respectively, experiencing a decline in concentrations in the spring, maintaining low levels throughout summer and the highest levels occurring in winter. Dissolved silica (SiO2–(Si) also displayed a marked seasonal distribution with a spring decline in concentrations associated with diatom growth, followed by an increase in the summer.The study demonstrated that intra-annual variability in nutrient concentrations is high and tends to be greatest in the most enriched waters. Thus, a high sampling frequency is required to provide representative annual mean data. Furthermore, annual means rather than winter–spring means provide more appropriate estimates of TP and SRP in these waters, owing to the importance of internal cycling of nutrients in summer. The findings are especially relevant to sampling strategy design and the averaging of seasonal water chemistry data for use in predictive models of lake trophic status. 相似文献

Identification and characterization of the water gap in physically dormant seeds of Geraniaceae, with special reference to Geranium carolinianum 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Background and Aims
Physical dormancy in seeds of species of Geraniaceae is caused by a water-impermeable palisade layer in the outer integument of the seed coat and a closed chalaza. The chalazal cleft has been reported to be the water gap (i.e. location of initial water entry) in innately permeable seeds of Geraniaceae. The primary aim of this study was to re-evaluate the location of the water gap and to characterize its morphology and anatomy in physically dormant seeds of Geraniaceae, with particular reference to G. carolinianum.Methods
Length, width, mass, anatomy and germination of two seed types (light brown and dark brown) of G. carolinianum were compared. Location, anatomy and morphology of the water gap were characterized using free-hand and microtome tissue sectioning, light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, dye tracking, blocking and seed-burial experiments.Key Results
Treatment with dry heat caused a colour change in the palisade cells adjacent to the micropyle. When placed in water, the ‘hinged valve’ (blister) erupted at the site of the colour change, exposing the water gap. The morphology and anatomy in the water-gap region differs from those of the rest of the seed coat. The morphology of the seed coat of the water-gap region is similar in G. carolinianum, G. columbinum, G. molle and G. pusillum and differs from that of the closely related species Erodium cicutarium.Conclusions
Dislodgment of swollen ‘hinged valve’ palisade cells adjacent to the micropyle caused the water gap to open in physically dormant seeds of G. carolinianum, and it was clear that initial water uptake takes place through this gap and not via the chalazal opening as previously reported. The hoverfly Trichopsomyia ochrozona (Stackelberg, 1952) (Diptera: Syrphidae) is recorded for the first time from Iran. An illustrated key to the West Palaearctic species of Trichopsomyia is presented. Illustrations of the puparium of Trichopsomyia joratensis Goeldin, 1997 and the larva and puparium of T. ochrozona are given and their larval and adult habitats are described. A short discussion is given on the known larval habitat of other West Palaearctic Trichopsomyia species. Some of the synonyms have been evaluated and Pipiza melancholica Meigen, 1822 is withdrawn from synonymy of Trichopsomyia flavitarsis (Meigen, 1822) and is considered as a junior synonym of Musca viduata Linnaeus, 1758 syn. nov. 相似文献

Chlorophytes and cyanobacteria are among the most typical algal groups, contributing to the aesthetic appearance and quality of the epilimnetic waters of the deep (251–410 m) and large (6.5–49×109 m3) lakes located on the southern edge of the Alps (from oligo-mesotrophy to meso-eutrophy: Maggiore, Garda, Como, Iseo and Lugano). The results obtained from monthly surveys carried out in the largest of these lakes (Garda) have been reported in detail. The thermal stability of the water column and silica depletion were the main factors responsible for the decline of the great spring diatoms. The successive growth of Mougeotia sp. was favoured by its lower sinking velocity and resistance to the increasing grazing pressure. During summer, the maximum stability of the water column, with high vertical nutrient concentration gradients, determined a major algal differentiation with a typical increase, among others, of Chlorococcales at the surface and metalimnetic stratification of various Oscillatoriales. The development of oligotrophic blooms, caused by a rapid thickening at the surface of Anabaena in the eastern, sheltered basin, was also discussed in light of the trophic characterisation of Lake Garda. From autumn to spring, the decreasing light, the increasing mixing depth and nutrient availability favoured a progressive dominance of vertical homogeneous populations of Planktothrix (autumn) and colonial diatoms. The same functional groups of chlorophytes and cyanobacteria have been recognised in the studies published so far on the phytoplankton of deep southern subalpine lakes. In this respect, their morphometric and physical properties appear to constitute a sort of standardising factor, reducing the range of possible dominants. With increasing TP concentrations and biomass, filaments of Planktothrix and Planktolyngbya, along with the Chlorococcales, became important. The dominance of Mougeotia (one of the most characteristic features of these large lakes) appears restricted to a medium trophic range, whereas the distribution of the Chroococcales and other filaments ascribed to Pseudanabaena and/or Limnothrix is more irregular. The conspicuous presence of Aphanizomenon in Lake Lugano is typical and characteristic of a more productive lake. Among the Nostocales, a clear interpretation of the Anabaena blooms in lakes Garda and Iseo is complicated by the peculiar behaviour of filaments concentrating at the surface, which is apparently restricted, within the medium trophic range, to stable water columns. 相似文献

It may be easier to renature SDS-denatured hydrophobic proteins than to renature SDS-denatured water-soluble proteins. This paper presents some support for this hypothesis in the form of literature reports and an experiment of our own with an intrinsic membrane protein (a phosphatase from Acholeplasma laidlawii), that could be completely renatured, to judge from the restored activity, which was equal to (or higher than) that of the untreated enzyme. If this hypothesis is correct it might be possible to devise general methods to reverse the SDS denaturation of hydrophobic membrane proteins. This would be a breakthrough in the purification of at least some membrane proteins, because the high-resolving polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in SDS could then be used to prepare membrane proteins in a native state. The method used for the renaturation of the SDS-denatured, entirely inactive, phosphatase comprised removal of SDS with the aid of conventional dialysis against a buffer containing the neutral, very efficient and non ultraviolet light-absorbing detergent G3707. For renaturation of the enzyme following an SDS-electrophoresis in polyacrylamide the gel was immersed in the same buffer for several hours; by staining for phosphatase the enzyme could easily be localized in the gel in the form of a yellow band, coinciding with a protein zone. 相似文献
