Summary Nest and soil populations of Trinervitermes spp. were estimated on grazed secondary savanna woodland near Mokwa cattle ranch and on primary savanna woodland, 6 km from the ranch. Nest populations were estimated by obtaining a relationship between size of nest and the number of termites in the nest and using the relationship to estimate populations in measured nests within the study area.Mound populations of T. geminatus, by far the most abundant species, were 222 m-2 at a mound density of 232 ha-1 at the ranch, and 225 m-2 at a mound density of 175 ha-1 on primary savanna woodland. The mound population at the ranch represented a fresh weight biomass of 1.089 g m-2. Changes in abundance of the mound population of T. geminatus were correlated with breeding and foraging cycles. Maximum numbers (388 m-2, 2.03 g m-2) in August/September were reduced by the flight of alates and loss of foragers to predators; thereafter, the population continued to decrease (126 m-2, 0.57 g m-2) until the cessation of foraging in April/May and numbers of larvae and nymphs began to increase. Soil and mound sampling in primary and secondary savanna showed that although T. geminatus is a mound inhabiting species, two thirds of the mound plus soil population was outside the mounds giving a total population of 737 m-2 (3.08 g m-2). Alate production was estimated at 15.5 m-2 (0.19 g m-2) and neuter production at 367 m-2 (1.66 g m-2); production/biomass ratio was 1.0 T. togoensis (total population of 21 m-2) and T. occidentalis (200 m-2) had 90–96% of the total numbers outside the mounds, indicating that these two species were primarily subterranean.  相似文献

Summary Annual grass production in ungrazed plots was 2,731 kg ha-1, litter production was 1,619 kg ha-1 and decomposition was 1,789 kg ha-1. In grazed plots the corresponding figures were 3,157 kg ha-1, 1,440 kg ha-1, and 1,475 kg ha-1 respectively; cattle consumed 1,405 kg ha-1. Litter disappearance was greatest in the dry season: 1,226 kg ha-1 (69% of the annual total) disappearing in the 4 months of December to March in the ungrazed plots, largely due to consumption (790 kg ha-1 in December to March) by fungus-growing termites (Macrotermitinae). A positive linear relationship was found between maximum grass biomass and annual rainfall in West Africa.  相似文献

Summary Termite mound densities in typical guinea savanna, Detarium, and grassland (boval) habitats in northern guinea savanna were determined by random quadratting of 2–3 sites in each habitat (100, 10x10 m quadrats per habitat). Dominant species in guinea savanna were T. geminatus (46 mounds ha-1) and T. oeconomus (21 mounds ha-1), in Detarium T. geminatus (59 mounds ha-1) and C. curtatus (45 mounds ha-1) and in boval C. curtatus (72 mounds ha-1) and T. geminatus (22 mounds ha-1). Only C. curtatus densities and total densities differed significantly between sites within habitats, but all species differed significantly in abundance between habitats. The composition of each community was related to general environment but no particular environmental variable was shown to be a major determinant of termite distribution. Evidence for the limitation of termite populations was obtained from indirect evidence of competition between colonies in Detarium, and by experimental manipulation of fire regimes in the typical guinea savanna habitat. Harvester termites increased four-five fold over two years in fire-protected plots as a result of increased food supplies. Total termite densities in the fire-protected community equilibrated to the new population density (100 mounds ha-1) after only two-three years.  相似文献

We describe the density, breeding and foraging ecology of the Berthelot's Pipit (Anthus berthelotii), an endemic passerine to the Atlantic islands, in the semi-arid coastal scrub of Tenerife. Furthermore, we analyse the effects of temperature and rainfall in the onset of reproduction and the behaviour (nest site and foraging site selection). The average density of the Pipit (using DISTANCE methodology) in the semi-arid coastal scrub was 7.1 birds 10ha?1, and the overall density estimate in grassland was 3.3 birds 10ha?1. The Pipit bred early (mean average first-egg laying date 12 February) and in response to rainfall (but not temperature). By the Mayfield method, the probability of the nests surviving the egg stage was 0.77 and of and the nests surviving the chick stage 0.67 — assuming an incubation period of 13 days and a chick stage of 12.5 days — based on the European average for the similar-sized Meadow Pipit Anthus pratensis. Overall nest survival pooling stages were 0.51. The Pipits had a low clutch size (3.3 eggs, range of 2–4). Nest damage by heavy rainstorms was the major cause of nest failures (three out of five failures). The Pipits nested preferentially in grass with relatively low densities of Euphorbia balsamifera bushes. Birds selected grassy areas as their main foraging site but also preferred to forage on large rocks during nesting: caterpillars were the main food items (14 out of 17 prey captures).  相似文献

The role of rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) herbivory was studied in Kirkkojärvi, a shallow and turbid basin in Lake Hiidenvesi, Finland. The submerged species dominating in the rudd diets were Potamogeton obtusifolius, Ranunculus circinatus, Sparganium emersum, bryophytes, and filamentous algae. Plant consumption estimated with bioenergetics modelling increased with fish age, being highest in late summer concomitant with the macrophyte biomass peak. Depending on the age structure, a rudd biomass of 20 kg ha?1 consumes 18–23 kg of macrophytes ha?1 a?1, while a rudd biomass of 100 kg ha?1 results in plant consumption of 92–115 kg ha?1 a?1. Although, rudd seemed to feed rather unselectively on suitable-sized and edible plants, some species abundant in the littoral, such as Myriophyllum verticillatum and pleustophytic Ceratophyllum demersum, were not found in rudd guts, indicating selective plant consumption. In Kirkkojärvi, selective grazing by rudd and increased turbidity and high nutrient levels partly caused by bottom dwelling cyprinid fish, may promote the inedible and pleustophytic macrophytes, which have increased in Kirkkojärvi during the past decades.

Summary Embryonopsis halticella is a brachypterous moth endemic to the Kerguelen Province of sub-Antarctic islands. Its larvae are strictly host-specific grass-borers of the tussock grass Poa cookii, and are the major herbivores on Marion Island. Monthly sampling over one year (1984) on Marion Island showed that E. halticella larvae reach a biomass of 0.222 g m-2 (dry mass) in P. cookii grassland in summer. In feeding experiments conducted in the laboratory on Marion Island, larvae consumed 0.3 X their own live mass in leaf material daily. Extrapolated consumption rates in the field range from 1 kg ha-1 month-1 in winter to 18 kg ha-1 month-1 (dry mass) in summer. Total annual consumption, based on leaf feeding only, amounts to 86 kg ha-1 (dry mass). Significant shifts in diet from foliage to seeds occur during spring, and larvae also consume their own frass and exuviae. It is calculated that E. halticella larvae remove 2.5% of the annual production of Poa cookii in Marion Island tussock grassland.  相似文献

Summary This study examines the woody vegetation, annual leaf-fall and annual wood-fall in Southern Guinea savanna near Mokwa, Nigeria. There were 1425±402 (95% limits) trees ha-1 of which Caesalpiniaceous legumes made up 53%. Annual leaf-fall was 2.387 t ha-1 a-1 equivalent to 11,238,932 kcal ha-1 a-1 and was highly seasonal, peaking from November to February, with a maximum in January after the annual bush fires. Annual wood-fall was 1.391 t ha-1 a-1 equivalent to 7,598,256 kcal ha-1 a-1 and was less seasonal but with two peaks, one from January to March after the fires and another from May to July in the rainy season. The litter-fall data currently available from West Africa are reviewed and indicate a negative correlation between litterfall and latitude (P<0.001). Litter production is found to be positively correlated with rainfall (P<0.001) and it is suggested that seasonal distribution of rainfall may also be a factor contributing to the limits of litter production.  相似文献

Summary Burrow formation (burrow length and faeces production) of the substrate feeding earthworm Aporrectodea caliginosa (Savigny) in relation to three temperatures (5, 10 and 15°C) and soil moisture contents (48, 60 and 73% water of dry wt) was determined. Soil moisture content affected the burrowing activity of A. caliginosa only below a distinct threshold (60% water of dry wt). At sufficient moisture an, increase in temperature by 5° C approximately doubled the amount of egesta produced. Another substrate feeding earthworm (Octolasion lacteum (Örley)) showed a similar pattern of burrowing activity. The data for the dependence of the faeces production of A. caliginosa on soil temperature and moisture content were combined with field data. The amount of faeces produced by the population of this earthworm species in a beechwood on limestone was calculated to be about 4.23 kg ha-1 a-1. The amount of egesta produced by all substrate feeding species is assumed to exceed 6 kg ha-1 a-1, which is equivalent to a soil layer of approximately 9 mm. This group of earthworms is therefore considered to be of greater importance for bioturbation and the formation of mull than previously assumed.  相似文献

Daily food intake of adult burbot, Lota lota, fed on vendace, Coregonus albula, were estimated experimentally at four different water temperatures (2.4, 5.1, 10.8 and 23.4°C). Mean daily food intake (MDI; g d–1) and relative daily food intake (RDI; g g–1 d–1) increased with temperature from 2.4 to 10.8°C and decreased at 23.4°C. Temperatures of maximum daily food intake values were 13.6°C for MDI and 14.4°C for RDI. No correlation between food intake values and burbot weight was observed. RDI values were used to estimate annual food consumption of burbot population. Annual food consumption estimates were 9.7kg ha–1 and 24.3kg ha–1 when burbot biomass was 2.0 or 5.0kg ha–1, respectively.  相似文献

Summary We estimated the density of subterranean termites Gnathamitermes tubiformans at 800,000 · ha-1 for a standing crop biomass of 2 kg · ha-1 Predation losses were estimated to be 5,73 kg · ha-1 · yr-1 representing the major release of nutrients from termites to surficial soil layers. Nutrient fluxes from termites to predators amounted to 410g N·ha-1·yr-1, 33 g S · ha-1 · yr-1 and 19 g P · ha-1 · yr-1. These fluxes account for 8% of the litter N, 1.5% of the litter P and 2.9% of the litter S. The termites fixed an estimated 66 g · ha-1 · yr-1 atmospheric N and returned an estimated 100 g · ha-1 · yr-1 in the surface gallery carton. Since losses of elements from subterannean termites were greater than standing crops, we estimated an annual turnover of N at 3.5 times per year, P of 2.5 times per year, and S of 2.5 per times per year.Since surface foraging, predation and alate flights are pulse regulated by rainfall, nutrient flows through subterranean termites are episodic and releases of nutrients accumulated in termite biomass preceeds or is coincident with productivity pulses of some shallow rooted plants. We propose that subterranean termites are important as regulators in desert nutrient cycles.  相似文献

A field study was carried out near Zürich (Switzerland) to determine the yield of symbiotically fixed nitrogen (15N dilution) from white clover (Trifolium repens L.) grown with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L) and from red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) grown with Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.). A zero N fertilizer treatment was compared to a 30 kg N/ha per cut regime (90 to 150 kg ha−1 annually). The annual yield of clover N derived from symbiosis averaged 131 kg ha−1 (49 to 227 kg) without N fertilization and 83 kg ha−1 (21 to 173 kg) with 30 kg of fertilizer N ha−1 per cut in the seeding year. Values for the first production year were 308 kg ha−1 (268 to 373 kg) without N fertilization and 232 kg ha−1 (165 to 305 kg) with 30 kg fertilizer N ha−1 per cut. The variation between years was associated mainly with the proportion of clover in the mixtures. Apparent clover-to-grass transfer of fixed N contributed up to 52 kg N ha−1 per year (17 kg N ha−1 on average) to the N yield of the mixtures. Percentage N derived from symbiosis averaged 75% for white and 86% for red clover. These percentages were affected only slightly by supplemental nitrogen, but declined markedly during late summer for white clover. It is concluded that the annual yield of symbiotically fixed N from clover/grass mixtures can be very high, provided that the proportion of clover in the mixtures exceeds 50% of total dry mass yield.  相似文献

Does nitrogen availability control rates of litter decomposition in forests?   总被引:14,自引:1,他引:13

The effects of increased exogenous N availability on rates of litter decomposition were assessed in several field fertilization trials. In a jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) forest, needle litter decomposed at the same rate in control plots and in plots fertilized with urea and ammonium nitrate (1350 kg N ha-1) with or without P and K. Mixed needle litter of western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.), western red cedar (Thuja plicata Donn) and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) incubated in plots recently amended with sewage sludge (500 kg N ha-1) lost less weight during 3 years than did litter in control plots. Forest floor material also decomposed more slowly in plots amended with sewage sludge. Paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.) leaf litter placed on sewage sludge (1000 kg N ha-1), pulp sludge, or sewage-pulp sludge mixtures decomposed at the same rate as leaf litter in control plots. These experiments demonstrate little effect of exogenous N availability on rates of litter decomposition. The influence of endogenous N availability on rates of litter decomposition was examined in a microcosm experiment. Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia Engelm.) needle litter collected from N-fertilized trees (525 kg N ha-1 in ammonium nitrate) were 5 times richer in N than needles from control trees (1.56% N versus 0.33% N in control trees), but decomposed at the same rate. Green needles from fertilized trees contained twice as much N as needles from control trees (1.91% N versus 0.88% N), but decomposed at the same rate. These experiments suggest that N availability alone, either exogenous or endogenous, does not control rates of litter decomposition. Increased N availability, through fertilization or deposition, in the absence of changes in vegetation composition, will not alter rates of litter decomposition in forests.  相似文献

There is a concern that Molinia caerulea (L.) Moench may be increasing in upland moorland communities at the expense of Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull and other ericaceous species. In order to develop a strategy for the control of Molinia, laboratory studies were carried out to determine the dose-response relationships of seven graminicides and glyphosate on both Molinia caerulea and Calluna vulgaris. Plants were grown under laboratory conditions and sprayed with increasing doses of herbicide using a precision sprayer. Results were highly variable, indicating the great morphological plasticity of these two species, making determination of the ED50 difficult. Glyphosate, quizalofop-ethyl and sethoxydim successfully reduced various measures of Molinia growth to 50% of control levels (ED50 estimates ranged from 0.41–0.67 kg a.i. ha-1, 0.18–1.20 kg a.i. ha-1and 0.37–0.49 kg a.i. ha-1respectively). In contrast, only glyphosate reduced Calluna growth significantly (ED50s ranged from 0.025–0.45 kg a.i. ha-1), whilst selective herbicides left it undamaged. A comparison of the results for Molinia and Calluna suggests that there is no application rate of glyphosate which will reduce Molinia effectively whilst leaving Calluna undamaged. Recommendations for field testing of selective herbicides are discussed.  相似文献

In a sandy loam under glass, potato cyst-nematode, Globodera pallida, was controlled in soil to 20 cm deep, and tomato yields were greatly increased by sheet steaming for 4 h, by 977 kg methyl bromide ha-1 or by 448 kg Telone (1,3-dichloropropene mixture or Di-Trapex CP (20% methyl isothiocyanate: 15% chloropicrin:65% dichloropropene-dichloropropane mixture) ha-1 followed by 441 kg dazomet or 11.2 kg oxamyl ha-1. Sheet steaming, unlike the other treatments, had relatively little effect on the nematode in soil 20 to 40 cm deep. Until the apices of the plants were cut off production of fruit was curvilinear against time in all treated soil but linear against time in untreated soil.  相似文献

Summary A field study of the foraging strategy used by the ponerine ant,Hagensia havilandi is reported. They have permanent nests in the leaf litter of coastal forests.H. havilandi is a diurnal forager and collects a variety of live and dead arthropods. These predatory ants exhibit individual foraging with no cooperation in the search for or retrieval of food items. Three colonies were observed and showed similar temporal and spatial foraging patterns. The paths of individual ants were followed and the results showed that the foragers exhibit area fidelity, and return to the nest via a direct route on finding on prey item. Several foragers did not return to the nest at dusk but returned the following morning. Occasionally a limited amount of tandem recruitment was displayed.  相似文献

We studied Nitrogen (N) transformations in Pinus sylvestris forest stands in the foothills of the SE Pre-Pyrenees (NE Spain). Plots were selected in two contrasting aspects (two plots per aspect) and N supply rate was measured by the resin-core incubation technique once every three months. N leaching through litter layers (L and F horizons) was evaluated by 5 zero-tension lysimeters in each plot. NH4 +-N, NO3 --N and soluble organic-N were determined in all solutions. N supply rate showed a clear seasonal pattern. Ammonification and nitrification were segregated in space and in time. While ammonification showed a peak in spring, nitrification was higher in summer. There was evidence suggesting that nitrification occurs mostly in A1 horizon. Nitrification rates differed significantly among plots. N supply rate was 12.7–23.5 kg N·ha-1·yr-1 but it did not differ between aspects or plots. Inorganic-N leached through litter layers was 14–17 kg N·ha-1·yr-1, and represented a high proportion of N supply rate. Organic-N leached through litter layers (27.8–37.0 kg N·ha-1·yr-1) was higher than leached inorganic-N. However, in most cases organic-N did not represent a high proportion of changes in soluble organic-N pools in H and A1 horizons (about 240 kg N·ha-1·yr-1). This large decrease in soluble organic-N was much greater than the increase in inorganic-N. The possible fate of these large amounts of organic-N is discussed.  相似文献

The effect of tree row species on the distribution of soil inorganic N and the biomass growth and N uptake of trees and crops was investigated beneath a Grevillea robustaA. Cunn. ex R. Br. (grevillea) tree row and Senna spectabilisDC. (senna) hedgerow grown with Zea mays L. (maize) and a sole maize crop, during one cropping season. The hypothesis was that a tree with a large nutrient uptake would have a greater competitive effect upon coexisting plants than a tree that takes up less and internally cycles nutrients. The field study was conducted on a kaolinitic Oxisol in the sub-humid highlands of western Kenya. Soil nitrate and ammonium were measured to 300 cm depth and 525 cm distance from the tree rows, before and after maize cropping. Ammonium concentrations were small and did not change significantly during the cropping season. There was > 8 mg nitrate kg–1 in the upper 60 cm and at 90–180 cm depth at the start of the season, except within 300 cm of the senna hedgerow where concentrations were smaller. During the season, nitrate in the grevillea-maize system only decreased in the upper 60 cm, whereas nitrate decreased at almost every depth and distance from the senna hedgerow. Inorganic N (nitrate plus ammonium) decreased by 94 kg ha–1 in the senna-maize system and 33 kg ha–1 in the grevillea-maize system. The aboveground N content of the trees increased by 23 kg ha–1 for grevillea and 39 kg ha–1 for senna. Nitrogen uptake by maize was 85 kg ha–1 when grown with grevillea and 65 kg ha–1 with senna. Assuming a mineralisation input of 50 kg N ha–1season–1, the decrease in inorganic soil N approximately equalled plant N uptake in the grevillea-maize system, but exceeded that in the senna-maize system. Pruning and litter fall removed about 14 kg N ha–1 a–1 from grevillea, and > 75 kg N ha–1 a–1 from senna. The removal of pruned material from an agroforestry system may lead to nutrient mining and a decline in productivity.  相似文献

Summary D. maculata, the white-faced hornet, stabilized (regulated) thoracic temperature (T Th) over wide ranges of ambient temperature (T a), whileV. vulgaris, the common yellowjacket, regulatedT Th poorly. The hornets also maintained a higherT Th than the wasps, sometimes heating 38°C aboveT a. Attacking individuals of both species had higherT Th than those either leaving or returning to the nest from foraging. The hornets, who are primarily hunters of live prey, showed peak activity near dawn, and they were as active atT a=2°C as at 20°C. Being able to regulate theirT Th and fly at the lowT a should enhance their ability to capture small insects that are usually torpid at theseT a. The yellowjacket wasps, on the other hand, who are scavengers as well as hunters, did not leave the nest at 2°C; their activity decreased greatly with decreasingT a. Differences in the foraging technique of the two vespids may be related to their different abilities to thermoregulate.  相似文献

We measured nitrogenase activity (acetylene reduction) of asymbiotic, heterotrophic, nitrogen-fixing bacteria on leaf litter from the tree Metrosideros polymorpha collected from six sites on the Hawaiian archipelago. At all sites M. polymorpha was the dominant tree, and its litter was the most abundant on the forest floor. The sites spanned a soil chronosequence of 300 to 4.1 million y. We estimated potential nitrogen fixation associated with this leaf litter to be highest at the youngest site (1.25 kg ha-1 y-1), declining to between 0.05 and 0.22 kg ha-1 y-1 at the oldest four sites on the chronosequence. To investigate how the availability of weathered elements influences N fixation rates at different stages of soil development, we sampled M. polymorpha leaf litter from complete, factorial fertilization experiments located at the 300-y, 20,000-y and 4.1 million–y sites. At the youngest and oldest sites, nitrogenase activity on leaf litter increased significantly in the plots fertilized with phosphorus and “total” (all nutrients except N and P); no significant increases in nitrogenase activity were measured in leaf litter from treatments at the middle-aged site. The results suggest that the highest rates of N fixation are sustained during the “building” or early phase of ecosystem development when N is accumulating and inputs of geologically cycled (lithophilic) nutrients from weathering are substantial. Summary It is to be concluded that the nocturnal ant C. maculatus aegyptiacus Emery starts foraging with the sun-set and its field activities are stopped with the sun-rise. The level of foraging activity showed two peaks at 1–3 hours after evening start and before morning stop. The differences in temperature and relative humidity at evening initiation and morning cessation of foraging activities suggest that both temperature and relative humidity have a marked effect on the evening start and morning stop of field activities.Although the atmospheric pressure, wind velocity and dew may have affected the rate of trail activity they appeared to have, within the ranges obtained, a very slight influence upon the evening start or morning stop of foraging activity.Cloud cover is not involved in the evening initiation or morning cessation of trail activity since it happened that the sky was almost always very clear at both evenings and mornings of all the nights of investigation from May to October but, the probability that the rate of nocturnal foraging activity of C. maculatus aegyptiacus might be affected by the cloud cover through the reduction of the moonlight exists. It is hoped to examine this in more detail at a later date.Zur Zeit: Zoologisches Institüt, 8 München 2, Luisenstraße 14.  相似文献
