The radial growth of Duprez’ cypress (Cupressus dupreziana A. Camus), a tree endemic to the Tassili n’Ajjer in the Central Sahara, was measured from cores taken in 1967 and 1997 from the same trees. A comparison of these cores, spanning 30 years, reveals that even in this hyper-arid climate, this species has a juvenile vigour comparable to other Mediterranean Cupressaceae. Wide individual variability was found, however, which was induced by the strong influence of microhabitat factors. Traditional dendrochronological methods of cross-dating are impossible to apply in the case of these trees. Ages of eight individuals were estimated with the help of radiocarbon dating, yielding an age range from 600 to 2400 years for trees of the most usual girths.  相似文献

Ongoing climate change has induced modification in the frequency and intensity of extreme climatic events, with consequent impact on tree and forest growth resilience. Araucaria araucana is an endangered Patagonian conifer, which provides several ecosystem services to local human societies and plays fundamental ecological roles in natural communities. These woodlands have historically suffered different types of anthropogenic disturbance, such as fire, logging and grazing, nevertheless the species resilience to extreme drought events remains still poorly understood. To fill this gap of knowledge, we applied dendrochronological methods to several A. araucana stands distributed along a steep bioclimatic gradient in order to reconstruct resilience capacity, in term of stem growth resistance and recovery, to three successive extreme spring-early summer droughts which occurred during the 20th century. Results showed an increase in the species recovery along the considered dry spells, whereas no clear trend emerged for resistance, suggesting no cumulative effect of drought upon resilience. Both resistance and recovery presented different values depending on bioclimatic settings, being xeric stands more sensitive to extreme episodes with respect to mesic woodlands, particularly during the more recent drought event when trees growing in drier environments were not able to reach pre-drought stem growth rates. Tree-level characteristics, such as age and growth trends prior to drought, modulated the species resilience, suggesting that future dry spells would possibly induce shifts in population dynamics, and furthermore be detrimental for fast-growing trees. Our analysis highlighted the response of a key Patagonian tree species to extreme drought events, providing bioclimatic-specific useful information for conservation plans of this natural resource.  相似文献

We aimed to determine which factors explain the relative abundances of climbing plants in a tropical sandy coastal plant community, locally called restinga, in SE-Brazil, where facilitation is an important mechanism controlling shrub and tree diversity. The factors examined were: associations with host trees and shrubs, environmental conditions, associations with herbs and space. We surveyed a total of 84 vegetation patches within two hectares of open restinga vegetation. Climbers, trees, shrubs and herbs were sampled using an adapted cover pin frame approach. Partial constrained ordination (pRDA) was used to partition the variation of climber species relative abundances into four sources: trees and shrubs relative abundances, herb species relative abundances, environmental variables (patch architecture and size), and the spatial coordinates. Linear models were used to model the relationship of climber diversity as a function of the environmental factors. A total of 12 climber species belonging to 5 families were recorded. Associations between climber species with subordinate trees and shrubs were the major determinants of climber presence in these vegetation patches. The support for growth created by these trees and shrubs had a secondary role in explaining these patterns. We found no relationship between tree dominance and climber species dominance in each patch. However, most climbers were associated with subordinate shrubs. Trellis availability at the first stratum was related to greater climber diversity suggesting that subordinate trees and shrubs may be crucial to promote climber diversity in this plant community. Space and associations with herbs had a minor contribution to overall variation. While 15 years of research in the site associated local floristic diversity to dominant trees, our results demonstrate that climber diversity in this community is governed by interactions with subordinate host woody species related to the environmental support for growth created by such trees and shrubs.  相似文献

In order to improve the conservation status of the Eld’s Deer (Cervus eldii), a critically endangered species in China, a population in a nature reserve on Hainan Island was studied. Abundances and behaviours in two different habitat types, natural and manipulated, were recorded. We found that different habitats were preferred according to season. Both sexes were more abundant in the manipulated habitat from January to May, with males being more abundant in the natural habitat from September to October. However, females, were significantly more abundant from April and May in the manipulated habitat. The deer preferred the more open manipulated habitat for feeding, consistent with greater food availability. This study provides useful evidence for managers to create seasonally suitable habitat for the conservation of this species on Hainan Island. Similar methods could also be applied to other deer species in China, most of which are facing critical survival challenges.  相似文献

In Neotropical rainforest canopies, phytotelmata (“plant-held waters”) shelter diverse aquatic macroinvertebrate communities, including vectors of animal diseases. Studying these communities is difficult because phytotelmata are widely dispersed, hard to find from the ground and often inaccessible. We propose here a method for placing in tree crowns “artificial phytotelmata” whose size and shape can be tailored to different research targets. The efficacy of this method was shown while comparing the patterns of community diversity of three forest formations. We noted a difference between a riparian forest and a rainforest, whereas trees alongside a dirt road cutting through that rainforest corresponded to a subset of the latter. Because rarefied species richness was significantly lower when the phytotelmata were left for three weeks rather than for six or nine weeks, we recommend leaving the phytotelmata for twelve weeks to permit predators and phoretic species to fully establish themselves.  相似文献

The gene coding for the small subunit ribosomal RNA molecule was sequenced in three marine spirotrichs: Pseudoamphisiella lacazei, P. alveolata, and Parabirojimia similis, the systematic positions of which remain unclear in spite of recent progress. Phylogenetic trees were constructed by means of neighbor-joining (NJ), least-squares (LS), maximum parsimony (MP), and Bayesian inference (BI) methods in order to test previously inferred phylogenetic assignments of Pseudoamphisiella and Parabirojimia based on morphological and morphogenetic data. The main results are that: (1) all trees constructed have similar topologies in which the genus Parabirojimia derives at the base of the class Stichotrichia, which suggests that it might represent a unique taxon at about suborder or even-order level near urostylids; (2) the present study supports the conclusion reported by previous researchers that urostylids could be a paraphyletic assemblage and that Uroleptus and Paruroleptus should be removed from the order Urostylida; (3) Pseudoamphisiellidae/Pseudoamphisiella always clusters with Prodiscocephalus borrori rather than with urostylids, which indicates that they might represent an ancestral form for both discocephaline and urostylid species; (4) the monophyly of the traditional suborder Discocephalina and typical euplotids is consistently rejected. Based on both morphological/morphogenetical and molecular data obtained, a new suborder Parabirojimina n. subord. is suggested, which currently includes one family, Parabirojimidae n. fam., and the single genus Parabirojimia.  相似文献

Drip‐tips are a common feature of the leaves of rain forest trees, but their functional significance remains contested. The most widely accepted hypothesis is that drip‐tips assist drainage of the lamina thereby aiding drying of the leaf surface and reducing the rate of colonization and abundance of epiphyllic organisms. The drying action of drip‐tips may also enhance transpiration and reduce the need for investment in support structures. Furthermore, drip‐tips may help prevent splash erosion around the base of the tree. Data from 130 forest Amazonian plots are used to investigate the abundance and distribution of drip‐tips and, through regression methods that incorporate spatial autocorrelation, seek to identify associations between the frequency of drip‐tips and a range of climatic variables. The average frequency of species and trees with drip‐tips across all plots was 32 and 33 percent, respectively. Trees and species with drip‐tips were significantly more prevalent in the Central‐East Amazon than the other regions. Drip‐tips were also associated with tree species that have smaller maximum heights and with trees with smaller trunk diameters. The proportion of species and individuals with drip‐tips was more strongly correlated with precipitation of the wettest trimester than with total annual precipitation or length of the dry season. Our results extend and provide support for both existing hypotheses for the functional benefit of possessing a drip‐tip. Moreover, the currently unrecognized macrogeographic association between the frequency of drip‐tips in trees of the tropical forest understory and areas of heavy precipitation suggests a new function for this trait.  相似文献

The deme-formation hypothesis states that selection can produce adaptive genetic variation within and among phytophagous insect populations. We conducted three field experiments and tested this prediction by transferring eggs and measuring performance of a mobile leafmining insect, Stilbosis quadricustatella. In Experiment 1, we compared the rate of mine initiation of leafminers transferred to natal and novel sites. In Experiment 2, we compared mine-initiation rate of leafminers transferred to natal and novel host-plant species. In Experiment 3, we compared the mine-initiation rate, mine-completion rate, and sources of mortality of miners transferred to neighboring natal and novel Quercus geminata trees. In the first, second, and third experiments, leafminer larvae initiated significantly more mines at the natal site, on the natal plant species, and on the natal Q. geminata tree, evidence for adaptive differentiation. Furthermore, plant-mediated mortality was significantly lower among miners transferred to natal Q. geminata trees. This result supports a key assumption of the deme-formation hypothesis: insects adapt to the defensive phenotypes of individual trees. However, natural-enemy mortality was significantly higher among miners transferred to natal trees, essentially reversing the plant effect. Therefore, rates of successful mine completion were similar on natal (19%) and novel (17%) trees. This experiment suggests that host plants and natural enemies may represent opposing forces of selection. Leafminers adapted to individual trees may realize a selective advantage only when natural-enemy densities are low.  相似文献

Gap regeneration of major tree species was examined, based on the pattern of gap phase replacement, in primary old-growth stands of warm-temperate, cool-temperate and subalpine forests, Japan. Using principal component analysis, the gap-regeneration behavior of major tree species could be divided into three guilds and that of Fagus crenata (monodominant species of cool-temperate forests). The criteria used for this division were total abundance of canopy trees and regenerations and relative abundance of regenerations to canopy trees. The gap-regeneration behavior of species in the first guild was that canopy trees regenerate in gaps from seedlings or saplings recruited before gap formation; they had higher total abundance and more abundant regenerations relative to their canopy trees. The gap-regeneration behavior of F. crenata was same as species in the first guild, but F. crenata had less abundant regenerations relative to its canopy trees. Species in the second guild had lower total abundance and less abundant regenerations to their canopy trees. The guild contained species whose canopy trees regenerate in gaps from seedlings or saplings recruited after gap formation or regenerate following largescale disturbance. The third guild consisted of species with lower total aboundance and more abundant regenerations relative to their canopy trees. The gap-regeneration behavior of some species in this guild was that trees regenerate in gaps from seedlings or saplings recruited before gap formation, and grow, mature, and die without reaching the canopy layer, while the gap-regeneration behavior of other species was same as that of species in the first guild or F. crenata. Major tree species of subalpine forests were not present in the third guild.  相似文献

West、Brown和Enquist提出的树木水分传导的分形网络模型(简称WBE模型)认为,树木连续分枝之间的导管或管胞直径按照一定的比率均匀变细,其总的水力阻力与水分传导的路径长度无关,从而使不同部位叶片获得基本相当的水分供应。该模型对树木高生长的水力限制假说提出了置疑。为了验证WBE模型中树木导管或管胞均匀变细的假说,该文研究了云南哀牢山中湿性常绿阔叶林中6种常绿阔叶树, 腾冲栲(Castanopsis wattii)、景东石砾(Lithocarpus chintungensis)、木果石砾(L. xylocarpus)、长尾青冈(Cyclobalanopsis stewardiana)、滇木荷(Schima noronhae)和舟柄茶(Hartia sinensis)木质部解剖特征随树高和年龄的变化。对这6个树种共14株样木进行了不同高度树干圆盘和边材生长轮取样,样木的高度为15~25 m,按照常规木材解剖的处理和分析方法,在显微镜下测定木材切片的导管直径和密度等特征。结果表明:在14株样木中,有4株树木导管直径随树木高度增加呈线性减小, 1株没有明显变化,其它9株树木导管直径在树冠以下的树干部分变化幅度较小或没有明显变化,而从树冠基部往上直到树木顶端导管直径显著减小。同一植株随着高度的增加,导管密度增加并且在树冠内增加更显著。有三分之一的树木导管占边材面积的比例随树高增加没有明显变化,其余树木导管占边材面积比在树冠以上有所减小。多数树木理论比导率在树冠以下没有明显变化而在树冠基部往上显著降低。在从髓芯开始往外的20~40个年轮范围内导管直径增加显著,但大部分植株导管直径在40个年轮后趋于稳定。不同高度圆盘导管直径随形成层发育时间的变化呈相似的趋势,并且相同发育年龄的导管直径没有明显差异。该文的研究结果说明,导管直径的轴向和径向变化一定程度上补偿了水分运输阻力随树木个体增大而增加的缺陷,但是6种常绿阔叶树树干的导管基本不按一定比率均匀变细,不支持WBE模型。  相似文献

From California sequoia, to Australian eucalyptus, to the outstanding diversity of Amazonian forests, trees are fundamental to many processes in ecology and evolution. Trees define the communities that they inhabit, are host to a multiplicity of other organisms and can determine the ecological dynamics of other plants and animals. Trees are also at the heart of major patterns of biodiversity such as the latitudinal gradient of species diversity and thus are important systems for studying the origin of new plant species. Although the role of trees in community assembly and ecological succession is partially understood, the origin of tree diversity remains largely opaque. For instance, the relative importance of differing habitats and phenologies as barriers to hybridization between closely related species is still largely uncharacterized in trees. Consequently, we know very little about the origin of trees species and their integrity. Similarly, studies on the interplay between speciation and tree community assembly are in their infancy and so are studies on how processes like forest maturation modifies the context in which reproductive isolation evolves. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, Lindtke et al. (2014) and Lagache et al. (2014) overcome some traditional difficulties in studying mating systems and sexual isolation in the iconic oaks and poplars, providing novel insights about the integrity of tree species and on how ecology leads to variation in selection on reproductive isolation over time and space.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Data are presented on the species richness and faunal composition of herbivorous insects on birch seedlings, saplings and trees at one site in Northern England.
2. Species richness of insect herbivores in equal-sized samples from birch seedlings and trees was similar through most of the season.
3. Effects of plant architecture were confined to the first sampling date, when seedling faunas were species poor compared with trees – possibly due to safe overwintering sites on the extensive bark, twigs and buds of trees.
4. The faunal composition of birch seedlings, saplings and trees was also similar. Out of a total of 112 recorded species of herbivores, only one aphid species was confined to seedlings.
5. Similarly, no evidence for clear-cut vertical stratification of insects within trees was found.
6. Species turnover as host plants mature ('horizontal' stratification) and vertical stratification within trees add little to the high overall species richness of birch-feeding insects in Britain, contrary to the predictions of Lawton (1983).  相似文献

Understanding adaptive genetic responses to climate change is a main challenge for preserving biological diversity. Successful predictive models for climate-driven range shifts of species depend on the integration of information on adaptation, including that derived from genomic studies. Long-lived forest trees can experience substantial environmental change across generations, which results in a much more prominent adaptation lag than in annual species. Here, we show that candidate-gene SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) can be used as predictors of maladaptation to climate in maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Aiton), an outcrossing long-lived keystone tree. A set of 18 SNPs potentially associated with climate, 5 of them involving amino acid-changing variants, were retained after performing logistic regression, latent factor mixed models, and Bayesian analyses of SNP–climate correlations. These relationships identified temperature as an important adaptive driver in maritime pine and highlighted that selective forces are operating differentially in geographically discrete gene pools. The frequency of the locally advantageous alleles at these selected loci was strongly correlated with survival in a common garden under extreme (hot and dry) climate conditions, which suggests that candidate-gene SNPs can be used to forecast the likely destiny of natural forest ecosystems under climate change scenarios. Differential levels of forest decline are anticipated for distinct maritime pine gene pools. Geographically defined molecular proxies for climate adaptation will thus critically enhance the predictive power of range-shift models and help establish mitigation measures for long-lived keystone forest trees in the face of impending climate change.  相似文献

Field research at the fossil-bearing deposits in the Afar Depression began in the 1970s. Prior to this, hominin fossils older than 3.0 Mya consisted of only a handful of fragments. During Phase I, the International Afar Research Expedition to Hadar, Ethiopia collected some 240 fossil hominins from Hadar over a time range of 3.0–3.4 Mya. Along with hominin fossils from Laetoli, they were deemed a new species, Australopithecus afarensis. This taxon was posited as the last common ancestor to robust Australopithecus and the Homo lineage in eastern Africa. Phase II research under the Hadar Research Project has added strength to the Phase I results, including the first association of a Homo fossil with stone tools at 2.4 Mya. This presentation is a cursory synopsis of the importance and implications of the hominin fossils recovered at Hadar during over the last 34 years.  相似文献

The epiphyte vegetation of Annona glabra on Barro Colorado Island, Panama   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Aim Information on the community composition, structure, and dynamics of epiphyte vegetation is scarce. A survey of the epiphytes occurring on all individuals of one particular host tree species in a well-studied neotropical research site allowed us a comparison of the epiphyte flora of this tree with the local epiphyte flora, the analysis of spatial distribution patterns and the use of these patterns as indications for changes in time. In the future, our results can be used as a baseline data-set for the direct observation of the long-term dynamics in epiphyte communities. Location The study was conducted on Barro Colorado Island (BCI), Panama. Methods We recorded all individuals of the vascular epiphytes growing on Annona glabra L., a flood-tolerant, multiple-stemmed tree, which is restricted to the shoreline of BCI. Data on tree biometrics, epiphyte species, and epiphyte abundances were collected for more than 1200 trees. Results In total, we encountered almost 15,000 epiphytic individuals in sixty-eight species, corresponding to more than one third of the entire epiphyte flora of Barro Colorado Island. The component species differed strongly in abundance: the four most important species accounted for >75% of all individuals. In most cases, the same four species were also the first to colonize a tree (=phorophyte). Colonization patterns indicated no replacement of early colonizers by late arrivals. Species richness and epiphyte abundances showed a positive correlation with the size and the density of the host trees. All species showed a highly clumped distribution and the physiognomy of epiphyte communities of individual trees was dominated either by one or several of the four most common species or by a set of frequently co-occurring tank bromeliads. Other species were dominant only in exceptional cases. Most species were always rare. A distance effect on community composition was mostly confined to a local scale with an increased similarity in the species assemblage of stems of a tree v. neighbouring trees. Main conclusions The epiphytes on a single small phorophyte species may encompass a surprisingly large proportion of the local epiphyte flora. The observations that most tree crowns are inhabited by a single or only very few species, and that all epiphyte species show highly clumped distributions suggest a predominance of very local dispersal within a tree crown, which is only infrequently interrupted by successful long-distance dispersal between crowns.  相似文献

位于亚热带的浙江天童和古田山常绿阔叶林大样地分布有较高比例的落叶树种,那么它们与常绿树种的共存机制是什么?常绿树种和落叶树种生态习性差异较大,二者对生境的选择应有所不同,我们推测生境分化可能是两类植物实现共存的主要机制。为检验该假设,我们以天童20ha动态样地调查数据为依托,选择个体数≥20的55个常绿树种和42个落叶树种作为分析对象,用典范对应分析(CCA)研究了地形因子对二者分布的影响差异,用torus转换检验来分析常绿树种和落叶树种与各类地形生境的关联。结果如下:(1)CCA分析表明地形因子对常绿树种分布的解释量为19.2%,对落叶树种分布的解释量为7.0%。(2)torus转换检验结果表明,与沟谷成正关联的常绿树种和落叶树种的比例分别为16.4%和28.6%,成负关联的比例分别为40%和7%;与山脊成正关联的常绿树种和落叶树种的比例分别为41.8%和4.8%,成负关联的比例分别为10.9%和47.6%;与受干扰生境成正关联的常绿树种和落叶树种的比例分别为16.4%和42.9%。上述结果说明地形对常绿树种分布的影响大于落叶树种;两个植物类群对生境的选择多呈现相反格局,尤其是在沟谷生境和山脊生境,这进一步表明生境分化是常绿树种和落叶树种共存的重要机制之一,生态位理论在一定程度上能较好地解释亚热带常绿阔叶林物种多样性的维持。  相似文献

Phytosociological analysis of the remnant mangrove forest was carried out in Sei Kecil, Telok Melano, West Kalimantan, to describe the forest composition and structure, and to assess the regeneration strategy of the important mangrove species. Six transect plots of 20 × 60 m, 20 × 80 m and 20 × 90 m, with a total area of one hectare were established perpendicular to the coast line.A total of 20 species of trees and saplings, two species of herbs and one species of nypa palm was recorded. Three community types were recognized namely Rhizophora apiculata, Excoecaria agallocha-Rhizophora apiculata and Excoecaria agallocha reflecting the zonation in this forest.The number of trees, saplings and seedlings were 510, 1220 and 11 085 per ha respectively. Rhizophora apiculata was most successful in regeneration with 6231 seedlings per ha (56.2%) and followed by Bruguiera parviflora with 3810 seedlings per ha (34.4%). Seedlings of the first species were mostly growing under gaps while the second species occurred mostly around the mother trees.  相似文献

An undescribed species of freshwater crab with a remarkable life history was studied over 2 years in areas of natural forest in the East Usambara Mountains, north-east Tanzania. It was found occupying the water-filled boles (tree holes) of several tree species at altitudes between 150 and 900 m asl, a single tree species Myrianthus holstii accounted for 26% of all trees identified as such. There was no apparent association with other freshwater bodies. The 'tree-hole crab' is largely nocturnal but will also forage by day during periods of heavy rainfall, leaving its tree hole in search of leaf-litter molluscs. Once located it carries pieces of the snail shell back to the tree hole and releases these into the water filled bole which is typically acidic. This releases calcium ions (Ca2+) into solution from the snail shell resulting in a more neutral solution (mean pH = 6.6, standard deviation (s) = 0.46, n  = 25). This act provides a source of dissolved calcium for the development of exoskeletons following ecdysis. Significant differences were found between depth ( P  = 0.01) and height ( P  = 0.05) of occupied and unoccupied water-filled tree holes. This is the first record of a crab exhibiting such behaviour in East Africa.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: We tested whether the local differences in genome size recorded earlier in the wild barley, Hordeum spontaneum, at 'Evolution Canyon', Mount Carmel, Israel, can also be found in other organisms. As a model species for our test we chose the evergreen carob tree, Ceratonia siliqua. METHODS: Genome size was measured by means of DAPI flow cytometry. KEY RESULTS: In adults, significantly more DNA was recorded in trees growing on the more illuminated, warmer, drier, microclimatically more fluctuating 'African' south-facing slope than in trees on the opposite, less illuminated, cooler and more humid, 'European' north-facing slope in spite of an interslope distance of only 100 m at the canyon bottom and 400 m at the top. The amount of DNA was significantly negatively correlated with leaf length and tree circumference. In seedlings, interslope differences in the amount of genome DNA were not found. In addition, the first cases of triploidy and tetraploidy were found in C. siliqua. CONCLUSIONS: The data on C. siliqua at 'Evolution Canyon' showed that local variability in the C-value exists in this species and that ecological stress might be a strong evolutionary driving force in shaping the amount of DNA.  相似文献
