Summary Incubating and non-incubating Bantam hens were exposed to identical thoracic skin cooling to study the difference between their physiological responses with regard to thermoregulatory adaptation to incubation. Under resting conditions thoracic skin temperature (T ths) and metabolic heat production (M) were significantly higher in broody than in non-broody hens, indicating a permanently increased conductance of the brood patch. Thoracic skin cooling from 35 to 25 °C decreased T ths less in broody than in non-broody hens. In broody hens, these coolings induced a large, immediate increase in M, no constriction of brood patch vasculature, and a decrease in colonic temperature (T c). This decrease in T c triggered no further increase in M, but induced vasoconstriction in the feet. The coolings induced a smaller increase in M in the non-broody hens, accompanied by pronounced vasoconstriction, and did not affect T c and foot temperature, T f. The effects of more severe thoracic skin cooling (between 25 and 15°C) differed much less between non-broody and broody hens. Vasoconstriction of the brood patch also occurred in the latter. It is concluded that in adaptation to incubation the thoracic skin becomes more sensitive, and its input signal becomes stronger for the control of certain effector systems of thermoregulation, allowing a controlled heat transfer to the eggs.Abbreviations BM body mass - M metabolic heat production - T c colon temperature - T ths thoracic skin temperature - T f foot temperature - T bs back skin temperature - T stim stimulation temperature - VO2 oxygen consumption  相似文献

Summary Body temperatures, metabolic rate, haemostatic parameters, and cardiovascular reactions to thoracic skin cooling were compared between incubating (broody) and non-broody Bantam hens. Under resting conditions, without thoracic skin cooling, cardiac output of broody hens was twice that of non-broody hens. However, their metabolic rate was increased by only one-third over that of non-broody hens, and the arteriovenous difference in oxygen concentration was smaller for broody birds. This indicates a higher rate of non-nutrient blood flow during incubation. A higher thoracic skin temperature (T ths) for broody hens compared to non-broody hens suggests that brood patches are the probable site of this increased flow through arteriovenous anastomoses (AVAs). Thoracic skin cooling increased metabolic rate and significantly more in broody hens, but did not increase AVA blood flow. The relation between metabolic rate and total peripheral resistance indicated more intense vasodilation for broody hens at the relatively low metabolic rates during moderate cooling, and more intense vasoconstriction for the broody hens at the high metabolic rates during stronger cooling. This corresponds to T ths measurements indicating dilation of brood patch AVAs with moderate cooling and AVA constriction with severe cooling. During moderate cooling, vasoconstriction in the feet and wattles of broody hens (but not of non-broody hens) freen non-nutrient blood flow for redistribution to the brood patches. Thus, the cardiovascular system of the hen seems to adjust to the special demands of incubation by a permanent increase of AVA flow in the brood patch, and by an additional capacity for brood patch vasodilation induced by cold stimuli in the range from 35 to 25°C. This corresponds well to the temperature range for development of galliform embryos.Abbreviations AVAs arteriovenous anastomoses - BP arterial blood pressure - CaO2 and CvO2 arterial and venous oxygen concentrations, respectively - HR heart rate - MAP mean arterial blood pressure - cardiac output - SV stroke volume - T bs back skin temperature - T c cofon temperature - T f foot temperature - T ths thoracic skin temperature - TPR total peripheral resistance - T w wattle temperature - oxygen consumption  相似文献

Summary The innervation of blood vessels in the brood patch (thoracic skin) of the domestic fowl was studied by use of the catecholamine fluorescence technique, acetylcholinesterase staining, and the immunoperoxidase technique for demonstration of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP). Large arteries and veins were sparsely innervated, whereas arteriovenous anastomoses (AVAs) were densely innervated by adrenergic, acetylcholinesterase-positive, and VIP-immunoreactive nerve fibres. The rich supply of different vasomotor nerves to AVAs emphasizes the importance of these vascular shunts in regulating blood flow and, in turn, the transport of heat to the brood patch. Furthermore, the presence of VIP-immunoreactive nerve fibres in the vasculature of the brood patch suggests that VIP might be the mediator of the previously reported cold-induced vasodilatation.  相似文献

Relationships were assessed between brood patch development, nest-building and egg-laying in 20 female canaries in the natural breeding season. Twelve of these were unpaired; eight were provided with males after two months of being kept singly. The later laying of some females was due to their more protracted development rather than to their later start. The completion of brood patch defeathering, a certain stage of its vascularity, and the start of intensive nest-building occurred within a few days of each other whatever the date of egg-laying. Differences from an earlier study of paired females which had only limited access to nest material can be understood in terms of the known effects of the male and the nest-cup on reproductive development.
All birds showed a period of intensive nest-building beginning about eight days before egg-laying, with a peak about three days before. In those females in which the period of intensive building lasted for more than eight days, there was an earlier peak about seven days previously. This, and also the building behaviour of many females even earlier in the season, are in harmony with the view that reproductive development is not progressive, but intermittent.  相似文献

Theory predicts that dispersal throughout metapopulations has a variety of consequences for the abundance and distribution of species. Immigration is predicted to increase abundance and habitat patch occupancy, but gene flow can have both positive and negative demographic consequences. Here, we address the eco‐evolutionary effects of dispersal in a wild metapopulation of the stick insect Timema cristinae, which exhibits variable degrees of local adaptation throughout a heterogeneous habitat patch network of two host‐plant species. To disentangle the ecological and evolutionary contributions of dispersal to habitat patch occupancy and abundance, we contrasted the effects of connectivity to populations inhabiting conspecific host plants and those inhabiting the alternate host plant. Both types of connectivity should increase patch occupancy and abundance through increased immigration and sharing of beneficial alleles through gene flow. However, connectivity to populations inhabiting the alternate host‐plant species may uniquely cause maladaptive gene flow that counters the positive demographic effects of immigration. Supporting these predictions, we find the relationship between patch occupancy and alternate‐host connectivity to be significantly smaller in slope than the relationship between patch occupancy and conspecific‐host connectivity. Our findings illustrate the ecological and evolutionary roles of dispersal in driving the distribution and abundance of species.  相似文献

Introduction

The monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) is a widespread invasive species native to southern South America that has become established in many regions of the world. Monk parakeets breed in a large, fully enclosed structure built from twigs, which consist of one to many individual brooding chambers. The species has been considered to be socially and genetically monogamous. However, genetic relatedness of adults to juveniles in the native area was found to be lower than expected for monogamy. To assess the significance of this discrepancy, we examined individual and population genetic patterns of microsatellite loci at two sites in Córdoba province, Argentina.

Results

We sampled 154 nestlings and 42 adults in Córdoba, Argentina. Mean value of pairwise relatedness of nestlings within chambers was about 0.40. Contrarily, relatedness of nestlings between chambers was close to zero. We found a considerable degree of variation in nestling pairwise relatedness and parentage within chambers, including chambers with combinations of unrelated, half-sib, and full-sib nestlings. The proportion of sibling relatedness indicated monogamy in 47% and extra pair-paternity in 40% of the chambers. We also found intra-brood parasitism in 3% of the chambers.

Conclusions

Our results indicate that the monk parakeet is sexually polygamous in its native range in Argentina, which is consistent with the observed mean value of relatedness of adults to juveniles of about 0.4. We also confirm the existence of intra-brood parasitism. High density of monk parakeets may favor occurrence of extra-pair paternity and intra-brood parasitism in the native sites.

Intra-specific brood parasitism is widespread among birds. When genetic evidence is not available, criteria like super-normal clutch size, high within-clutch variance in egg morphology, and shorter than normal laying intervals have been used to identify parasitized broods. Here we report genetically determined parentage of a clutch of super-normal size in a species with fixed clutch size, the northern lapwing Vanellus vanellus . Results from multi-locus DNA fingerprinting revealed no loss of parentage in this brood. Furthermore, no loss of parentage was found in another clutch with a high variance in egg size and colouration. These findings add to previous evidence that reliable classification of brood parasitism requires molecular analysis.  相似文献

In birds, the adaptive significance of hatching asynchrony has been under debate for many years and the parental effects on hatching asynchrony have been largely assumed but not often tested. Some authors suggest that hatching asynchrony depends on the incubation onset and many factors have been shown to influence hatching asynchrony in different species. Our objective was to analyze the exact timing of the onset of incubation and if this affects hatching asynchrony; and, in addition, which other factors (brood patch development, incubation position, adult body condition, intra‐clutch egg dimorphism, laying date and year) affect hatching asynchrony in Magellanic penguins Spheniscus magellanicus. We first estimated the eggshell temperature at which embryo development starts, with a non‐destructive and novel method. We then recorded individual egg temperatures in 61 nests during incubation, and related them, and other breeding parameters, to hatching asynchrony. We also observed incubation positions in 307 nests. We found a significant positive relationship between hatching asynchrony and the temperature that the first‐laid egg experienced during egg laying and between hatching asynchrony and the initial brood patch area. We also found a negative relationship between hatching asynchrony and the difference in temperature between second and first‐laid eggs within a clutch, measured after the egg‐laying period was finished. We ruled out position of the eggs during incubation, adult body condition, egg volume, laying date, and study year as factors influencing hatching asynchrony. The egg temperature during laying and the difference in temperature between eggs of a clutch are determinants of hatching asynchrony in Magellanic penguins.  相似文献

In many bird species, eggs laid late in the laying period hatch after a shorter incubation period than early-laid eggs. However, the mechanisms that explain these seasonal declines in incubation periods among clutches remain poorly understood. In this study we investigated the plasticity of brood patch development during incubation in yellow-eyed penguins Megadyptes antipodes and established whether differences exist in brood patch formation among early, mean and late-breeding penguins. We also examined whether brood patch development was influenced by sex and age of birds. We then placed an artificial egg in nests a few days prior to egg laying to investigate whether the presence of an egg influences brood patch development and whether an advanced brood patch development at the time of egg laying causes declines in incubation periods. Initial brood patch width on the day the first egg was laid was dependent on sex and age, while the development of brood patch width after first egg laying was slower in early-laying birds than in mean- and late-laying birds. Initial brood patch temperature as well as temperature throughout incubation was largely dependent upon sex, whereby males had higher brood patch surface temperatures than females. Placement of an artificial egg in nests stimulated successfully brood patch development in manipulated birds, so that by the time they laid their own first egg, their brood patches were wider and had higher temperatures than those of control birds. Moreover, incubation periods of first eggs from manipulated nests were significantly shorter (43.5 days) than were those from control nests (47.3 days). Thus, variation in brood patch development and related differences in incubation temperature during early incubation could contribute to seasonal declines in incubation periods.  相似文献

Total renal blood flow (TRBF) and its intrarenal and intracortical distribution were measured before and during renal vasodilatation induced by acetylcholine infusion using the 133Xe washout, 86Rb uptake and radioactive microspheres distribution techniques. A good agreement was observed between TRBF calculated from 133Xe washout and measured with the electromagnetic flowmeter (FM). 86Rb-TRBF was lower than FM-TRBF and, due to the progressive reduction of renal 86Rb uptake, the difference increased with the increase of flow. With the alteration of TRBF the intrarenal distribution of 86Rb uptake did, however, not change significantly and, accordingly there was no redistribution of RBF either between the cortex and medulla, or among the individual cortical zones. The intracortical distribution of labelled microspheres showed, however, moderate flow dependent changes: with the rise of TRBF, due probably to the reduction of the steric hindrance, the estimated fractional perfusion of the inner cortical zones increased. The sum of the per cent 86Rb content of the innermost cortical zone (C4) and of the medulla exceeded the per cent microsphere content of zone C4. It is concluded that the medulla is perfused not exclusively with blood flowing from the juxtamedullar glomeruli. The regional flow values obtained from the 133Xe curves are not comparable with the results obtained by other methods and cannot be attributed to well defined areas of the kidney.  相似文献

Blood flow in abdominal aortic aneurysms: pulsatile flow hemodynamics   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Numerical predictions of blood flow patterns and hemodynamic stresses in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAAs) are performed in a two-aneurysm, axisymmetric, rigid wall model using the spectral element method. Physiologically realistic aortic blood flow is simulated under pulsatile conditions for the range of time-averaged Reynolds numbers 50< or =Re(m)< or =300, corresponding to a range of peak Reynolds numbers 262.5< or =Re(peak) < or = 1575. The vortex dynamics induced by pulsatile flow in AAAs is characterized by a sequence of five different flow phases in one period of the flow cycle. Hemodynamic disturbance is evaluated for a modified set of indicator functions, which include wall pressure (p(w)), wall shear stress (tau(w)), and Wall Shear Stress Gradient (WSSG). At peak flow, the highest shear stress and WSSG levels are obtained downstream of both aneurysms, in a pattern similar to that of steady flow. Maximum values of wall shear stresses and wall shear stress gradients obtained at peak flow are evaluated as a function of the time-average Reynolds number resulting in a fourth order polynomial correlation. A comparison between predictions for steady and pulsatile flow is presented, illustrating the importance of considering time-dependent flow for the evaluation of hemodynamic indicators.  相似文献

Recognition is considered a critical basis for discriminatory behaviours in animals. Theoretically, recognition and discrimination of parasitic chicks are not predicted to evolve in hosts of brood parasitic birds that evict nest-mates. Yet, an earlier study showed that host reed warblers (Acrocephalus scirpaceus) of an evicting parasite, the common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus), can avoid the costs of prolonged care for unrelated young by deserting the cuckoo chick before it fledges. Desertion was not based on specific recognition of the parasite because hosts accept any chick cross-fostered into their nests. Thus, the mechanism of this adaptive host response remains enigmatic. Here, I show experimentally that the cue triggering this 'discrimination without recognition' behaviour is the duration of parental care. Neither the intensity of brood care nor the presence of a single-chick in the nest could explain desertions. Hosts responded similarly to foreign chicks, whether heterospecific or experimental conspecifics. The proposed mechanism of discrimination strikingly differs from those found in other parasite-host systems because hosts do not need an internal recognition template of the parasite's appearance to effectively discriminate. Thus, host defences against parasitic chicks may be based upon mechanisms qualitatively different from those operating against parasitic eggs. I also demonstrate that this discriminatory mechanism is non-costly in terms of recognition errors. Comparative data strongly suggest that parasites cannot counter-evolve any adaptation to mitigate effects of this host defence. These findings have crucial implications for the process and end-result of host-parasite arms races and our understanding of the cognitive basis of discriminatory mechanisms in general.  相似文献

In birds, even a minor difference in egg temperature (1–1.5 °C) has been shown to affect the fitness of offspring by changing hatching success, incubation period and nestling quality. Female, but not male, passerines develop brood patches. Thus if there are traits, such as plumage ornamentation, that indicate optimal egg temperature, males should pair with females that exhibit those traits. However, no study has yet investigated the relationship between female brood patch temperature, which would directly affect egg temperature, and female plumage ornamentation. In this study, we examined the surface temperature of female brood patches during nocturnal incubation and examined its relationship with female plumage ornaments in Asian Barn Swallows Hirundo rustica gutturalis. After controlling for ambient air temperature, brood patch temperature was negatively associated with colour saturation of the female throat patch. No other female ornaments, such as tail‐length, white tail spots or throat patch size, predicted brood patch temperature. When oral (mouth) temperature was statistically controlled, females with less colourful throats and longer tails showed higher brood patch temperature, indicating that these females had hotter brood patches in relation to the temperature of other body parts. Furthermore, we found a negative relationship between pheomelanin pigmentation and brood patch temperature after controlling for ambient air temperature or oral temperature. To our knowledge, this is the first study to show that female ornaments can predict the absolute/relative thermal investment in brood patches. This relationship, together with other aspects of female quality, may affect male mate preference and female ornamentation.  相似文献

Vasodilatation was induced by perfusion of the tachykinins substance P (SP), neurokinin A and neurokinin B and the analogues [Glp6, D-Pro9]SP-(6-11) and [Glp6, L-Pro9]SP-(6-11) over the base of vacuum-induced blisters on the rat footpad. Vasodilatation was measured as change in blood flow using a laser-Doppler flowmeter. The tachykinins induced vasodilatation in a dose-response manner with a threshold of approximately 3 pmol and pD2's of 6.48, 6.13 and 6.21 for SP, neurokinin A and neurokinin B respectively. The D- and L-Pro analogues of [Glp6, Pro9]SP-(6-11) also induced vasodilatation in a dose-dependent manner. The L-Pro analogue was more potent than the D-Pro analogue (D/L ratio of the EC50's = 21) which suggests the involvement of an NK-1 type receptor in the mediation of small vessel vasodilatation. The vasodilatation to SP was reduced by 64% and 59% in capsaicin- and antihistamine-pretreated animals respectively, demonstrating the involvement of capsaicin-sensitive primary afferent nerves and mast cells in the vasodilatation component of the neurogenic inflammatory response.  相似文献
