Changes in the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide ([CO2]), nutrient availability and biotic diversity are three major drivers of the ongoing global change impacting terrestrial ecosystems worldwide. While it is well established that soil nutrient heterogeneity exerts a strong influence on the development of plant individuals and communities, it is virtually unknown how nutrient heterogeneity and global change drivers interact to affect plant performance and ecosystem functioning. We conducted a microcosm experiment to evaluate the effect of simultaneous changes in [CO2], nutrient heterogeneity (NH), nutrient availability (NA) and species evenness on the biomass and nutrient uptake patterns of assemblages formed by Lolium perenne, Plantago lanceolata and Holcus lanatus. When the nutrients were heterogeneously supplied, assemblages exhibited precise root foraging patterns, and had higher above‐ and belowground biomass (average increases of 32% and 29% for above‐ and belowground biomass, respectively). Nutrient heterogeneity also modulated the effects of NA on biomass production, complementarity in nitrogen uptake and below: aboveground ratio, as well as those of [CO2] on the nutrient use efficiency at the assemblage level. Our results show that nutrient heterogeneity has the potential to influence the response of plant assemblages to simultaneous changes in [CO2], nutrient availability and biotic diversity, and suggest that it is an important environmental factor to interpret and assess plant assemblage responses to global change. 相似文献

Interactive effects of atmospheric CO(2) concentration ([CO(2)]), soil nutrient availability and soil nutrient spatial distribution on the structure and function of plant assemblages remain largely unexplored. Here we conducted a microcosm experiment to evaluate these interactions using a grassland assemblage formed by Lolium perenne, Plantago lanceolata, Trifolium repens, Anthoxanthum odoratum and Holcus lanatus. Assemblages exhibited precise root foraging patterns, had higher total and below-ground biomass, and captured more nitrogen when nutrients were supplied heterogeneously. Root foraging responses were modified by nutrient availability, and the patterns of N capture by interactions between nutrient distribution, availability and [CO(2)]. Greater above-ground biomass was observed under elevated CO(2) only under homogeneous conditions of nutrient supply and at the highest availability level. CO(2) interacted with nutrient distribution and availability to determine foliar percentage N and below : above-ground biomass ratios, respectively. Interactions between nutrient distribution and CO(2) determined the relative contribution to above-ground biomass of four of the species. The responses of dominant and subordinate species to [CO(2)] were dependent on the availability and distribution of nutrients. Our results suggest that soil nutrient distribution has the potential to influence the response of plant species and assemblages to changes in [CO(2)] and nutrient availability. 相似文献

We conducted an experiment to evaluate the plastic phenotypic responses of individuals, growing under intra-specific competition,
and populations of three co-occurring grassland species (Lolium
perenne, Plantago lanceolata, and Holcus lanatus) to joint variations in atmospheric CO2 partial pressure (P
CO2; 37.5 vs. 70 Pa), nutrient availability (NA; 40 vs. 120 mg N added as organic material), and the spatial pattern of nutrient supply (SH; homogeneous vs. heterogeneous nutrient supply). At both the population and individual levels, the aboveground biomass of the three species
significantly increased when the nutrients were heterogeneously supplied. Significant two- (SH × NA) and three-term (P
CO2 × NA × SH) interactions determined the response of traits measured on populations (aboveground biomass and below: aboveground
biomass ratio, BAR) and individuals (aboveground biomass and specific leaf area). The combination of a high SH and NA elicited
the highest plasticity of aboveground biomass in populations and individuals of the three species evaluated, and of BAR in
Holcus. Soil heterogeneity and elevated P
CO2 elicited the highest plasticity in the SLA of Plantago and Lolium individuals. Our results show that populations, and not only individuals, respond to soil heterogeneity in a plastic way,
and that plastic responses to elevated P
CO2 are complex since they vary across traits and species, and are influenced by the availability of nutrients and by their spatial
distribution. They also emphasize the importance of soil heterogeneity as a modulator of plant responses to global change
drivers.

BACKGROUND: Elevated levels of atmospheric [CO2] are likely to enhance photosynthesis and plant growth, which, in turn, should result in increased specific and whole-plant respiration rates. However, a large body of literature has shown that specific respiration rates of plant tissues are often reduced when plants are exposed to, or grown at, high [CO2] due to direct effects on enzymes and indirect effects derived from changes in the plant's chemical composition. SCOPE: Although measurement artefacts may have affected some of the previously reported effects of CO2 on respiration rates, the direction and magnitude for the effects of elevated [CO2] on plant respiration may largely depend on the vertical scale (from enzymes to ecosystems) at which measurements are taken. In this review, the effects of elevated [CO2] from cells to ecosystems are presented within the context of the enzymatic and physiological controls of plant respiration, the role(s) of non-phosphorylating pathways, and possible effects associated with plant size. CONCLUSIONS: Contrary to what was previously thought, specific respiration rates are generally not reduced when plants are grown at elevated [CO2]. However, whole ecosystem studies show that canopy respiration does not increase proportionally to increases in biomass in response to elevated [CO2], although a larger proportion of respiration takes place in the root system. Fundamental information is still lacking on how respiration and the processes supported by it are physiologically controlled, thereby preventing sound interpretations of what seem to be species-specific responses of respiration to elevated [CO2]. Therefore the role of plant respiration in augmenting the sink capacity of terrestrial ecosystems is still uncertain. 相似文献

Elevated [CO2], temperature increase and N supply effects on the turnover of below-ground carbon in a temperate grassland ecosystem 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The effects of elevated [CO2] (700 μl l-1 CO2) and temperature increase (+3 °C) on carbon turnover in grassland soils were studied during 2.5 years at two N fertiliser
supplies (160 and 530 kg N ha-1 y-1) in an experiment with well-established ryegrass swards (Lolium perenne) supplied with the same amounts of irrigation water.
During the growing season, swards from the control climate (350 μl l-1 [CO2] at outdoor air temperature) were pulse labelled by the addition of 13CO2. The elevated [CO2] treatments were continuously labelled by the addition of fossil-fuel derived CO2 (13
C of -40 to -50 ‰). Prior to the start of the experimental treatments, the carbon accumulated in the plant parts and in the
soil macro-organic matter (‘old’ C) was at −32‰. During the experiment, the carbon fixed in the plant material (‘new’ C) was
at −14 and −54‰ in the ambient and elevated [CO2] treatments, respectively. During the experiment, the 13C isotopic mass balance method was used to calculate, for the top soil (0–15 cm), the carbon turnover in the stubble and roots
and in the soil macro-organic matter above 200 μ (MOM). Elevated [CO2] stimulated the turnover of organic carbon in the roots and stubble and in the MOM at N+, but not at N−. At the high N supply,
the mean replacement time of ‘old’ C by ‘new’ C declined in elevated, compared to ambient [CO2], from 18 to 7 months for the roots and stubble and from 25 to 17 months for the MOM. This resulted from increased rates
of ‘new’ C accumulation and of ‘old’ C decay. By contrast, at the low N supply, despite an increase in the rate of accumulation
of ‘new’ C, the soil C pools did not turnover faster in elevated [CO2], as the rate of ‘old’ C decomposition was reduced. A 3 °C temperature increase in elevated [CO2] decreased the input of fresh C to the roots and stubble and enhanced significantly the exponential rate for the ‘old’ C
decomposition in the roots and stubble. An increased fertiliser N supply reduced the carbon turnover in the roots and stubble
and in the MOM, in ambient but not in elevated [CO2]. The respective roles for carbon turnover in the coarse soil OM fractions, of the C:N ratio of the litter, of the inorganic
N availability and of a possible priming effect between C-substrates are discussed.

Acclimation of nitrogen uptake capacity of rice to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Background and Aims: Nitrogen (N) is a major factor affecting yield gain of cropsunder elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations [CO2].It is well established that elevated [CO2] increases root mass, but there are inconsistent reports on the effects on N uptakecapacity per root mass. In the present study, it was hypothesizedthat the responses of N uptake capacity would change with theduration of exposure to elevated [CO2]. Methods: The hypothesis was tested by measuring N uptake capacity inrice plants exposed to long-term and short-term [CO2] treatmentsat different growth stages in plants grown under non-limitingN conditions in hydroponic culture. Seasonal changes in photosynthesisrate and transpiration rate were also measured. Key Results: In the long-term [CO2] study, leaf photosynthetic responsesto intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) were not affected byelevated [CO2] before the heading stage, but the initial slopein this response was decreased by elevated [CO2] at the grain-fillingstage. Nitrate and ammonium uptake capacities per root dry weightwere not affected by elevated [CO2] at panicle initiation, butthereafter they were reduced by elevated [CO2] by 31–41% at the full heading and mid-ripening growth stages. In theshort-term study (24 h exposures), elevated [CO2] enhanced nitrateand ammonium uptake capacities at the early vegetative growthstage, but elevated [CO2] decreased the uptake capacities atthe mid-reproductive stage. Conclusions: This study showed that N uptake capacity was downregulated underlong-term exposure to elevated [CO2] and its response to elevated[CO2] varied greatly with growth stage. 相似文献

Elevated atmospheric partial pressure of CO2 and plant growth 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4

Cotton plants were grown in late spring under full sunlight in glasshouses containing normal ambient partial pressure of CO2 (32±2Pa) and enriched partial pressure of CO2 (64±1.5Pa) and at four levels of nitrogen nutrition. Thirty-five days after planting, the total dry weights of high CO2-grown plants were 2- to 3.5-fold greater than plants grown in normal ambient CO2 partial pressure. Depending on nitrogen nutrition level, non-structural carbohydrate content (mainly starch) in the leaves of plants grown in normal CO2 was between 4 and 37% of the total leaf dry weight compared to 39 to 52% in the leaves of high CO2-grown plants. Specific leaf weight calculated using total dry weight was 1.6- to 2-fold greater than that based on structural dry weight. In high CO2-grown plants the amount of non-structural carbohydrate translocated from the leaves at night was between 10 and 20% of the level at the end of the photoperiod. This suggests that the plant was unable to utilize all the carbohydrate it assimilated in elevated CO2 atmosphere. While there was a 1.5-fold enhancement in the rate of CO2 assimilation in plants grown in 64 Pa CO2, there was, however, some evidence to suggest that the activities of other metabolic pathways in the plants were not stimulated to the same extent by the enriched CO2 atmosphere. This resulted in massive accumulation of non-structural carbohydrate, particularly at low level of nitrogen nutrition.Abbreviations A

Pseudovivipary is an asexual reproductive strategy exhibited by some arctic/alpine grasses in which leafy plantlets are produced in place of seeds, with genetic conservation an advantage for stress tolerators in these nutrient-poor habitats. Photosynthetic metabolism and the development of this reproductive system were investigated under varying nutrient availability and predicted future CO(2) partial pressure (pCO(2)). Poa alpina var. vivipara L., grown at present ambient pCO(2) or ambient plus 340 micro mol mol(-1) CO(2) (elevated pCO(2)), was supplied with either 0.05 mol m(-3) phosphorus and 0.2 mol m(-3) nitrogen, or 0.2 mol m(-3) phosphorus and 1.0 mol m(-3) nitrogen. Gas exchange measurements and determination of total non-structural carbohydrate (TNC), nitrogen and phosphorus contents revealed that parent plant leaf blade tissues experienced acclimatory loss of photosynthetic capacity after long-term growth at elevated pCO(2) (particularly so when nutrient availability was low); there were associated reductions in photosynthetic nitrogen and phosphorus use efficiencies (PNUE and PPUE). In addition, decreased PNUE and PPUE were exhibited by plantlets grown at elevated pCO(2) with low nutrient availability. Decreased reproductive dry matter in this treatment also resulted from a lack of reproductive initiation in daughter tillers, and altered phenology. Pseudoviviparous P. alpina is likely to be at a disadvantage in both vegetative and reproductive phases at predicted future elevated atmospheric CO(2) concentrations, particularly where nutrients are scarce and when in competition with species experiencing less acclimatory loss of photosynthetic capacity. 相似文献

The results of this study suggest that the effects of rising atmospheric [CO2] on plant N availability may be negligible in this grassland. Vegetative conversion from grass to forest may influence soil nutrient dynamics and availability. A short-term (40 weeks) glasshouse experiment was carried out to investigate the impacts of ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and radiata pine (Pinus radiata) on soil phosphorus (P) availability in 15 grassland soils collected across New Zealand using 33P isotopic exchange kinetics (IEK) and chemical extraction methods. Results from this study showed that radiata pine took up more P (4.5–33.5 mg P pot–1) than ryegrass (1.1–15.6 mg pot–1) from the soil except in the Temuka soil in which the level of available P (e.g., E1min Pi, bicarbonate extractable Pi) was very high. Radiata pine tended to be better able to access different forms of soil P, compared with ryegrass. There were no significant differences in the level of water soluble P (Cp, intensity factor) between soils under ryegrass and radiata pine, but the levels of Cp were generally lower compared with original soils due to plant uptake. The growth of both ryegrass and radiata pine resulted in the redistribution of soil P from the slowly exchangeable Pi pool (E> 10m Pi, reduced by 31.8% on the average) to the rapidly exchangeable Pi (E1min-1d Pi, E1d-10m Pi) pools in most soils. The values of R/r1 (the capacity factor) were also generally greater in most soils under radiata pine compared with ryegrass. Specific P mineralisation rates were significantly greater for soils under radiata pine (8.4–21.9%) compared with ryegrass (0.5–10.8%), indicating that the growth of radiata pine enhanced mineralisation of soil organic P. This may partly be ascribed to greater root phosphatase activity for radiata pine than for ryegrass. Plant species × soil type interactions for most soil variables measured indicate that the impacts of plant species on soil P dynamics was strongly influenced by soil properties. 相似文献

The relative increase with elevated CO2 of canopy CO2 uptake rate (A), derived from continuous measurements during the day, was examined in full-cover vegetative Lolium perenne canopies after 17 days of regrowth. The stands were grown at ambient (358±50 mol mol-1) and increased (626±50 mol mol-1) CO2 concentration in sunlit growth chambers. Over the entire range of temperature and light conditions (which were strongly coupled and increased simultaneously), A was on average twice as large in high compared to ambient CO2. This response (called M=A in high CO2/A in ambient CO2) could not be explained by changes in canopy conductance for CO2 diffusion (GC). In spite of interaction and strong coupling between temperature and light intensity, there was evidence that temperature rather than light determined M. Further, high CO2 treatment was found to alleviate the afternoon depression in A observed in ambient CO2. A temperature optimum shift or/and a larger carbohydrate sink capacity through altered root/shoot ratio are proposed in explanation.Abbreviations A

High CO2 partial pressure effects on dark and light CO2 fixation and metabolism in Vicia faba leaves
Stomatal opening on Vicia faba can be induced by high CO2 partial pressures (10.2%) in dark as well as in light. Stomatal aperture was measured in both cases with a hydrogen porometer. The distribution of 14C among early products of photosynthesis was studied. Comparisons are made with carboxylations occurring when stomata were open in the dark with CO2-free air and in light with 0.034% CO2. Results showed that in high CO2 partial pressure in light, less radioactivity was incorporated in Calvin cycle intermediates and more in sucrose. carboxylations and photorespiration seemed to be inhibited. In the dark in both CO2 conditions, 14C incorporation was found in malate and aspartate but also in serine and glycerate in high CO2 conditions. In light these changes in metabolic pathways may be related with the deleterious effects recorded on leaves after long-term expositions to high partial pressure of CO2.Abbreviations DHAP

Decomposition of litter produced under elevated CO2: Dependence on plant species and nutrient supply 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

We investigated the effect of CO2 concentration and soilnutrient availability during growth on the subsequent decomposition andnitrogen (N) release from litter of four annual grasses that differ inresource requirements and native habitat. Vulpia microstachys isa native grass found on California serpentine soils, whereas Avenafatua, Bromus hordaceus, and Lolium multiflorum areintroduced grasses restricted to more fertile sandstone soils (Hobbs & Mooney 1991). Growth in elevated CO2 altered litter C:N ratio, decomposition, and N release, but the direction and magnitude of thechanges differed among plant species and nutrient treatments. ElevatedCO2 had relatively modest effects on C:N ratio of litter, increasing this ratio in Lolium roots (and shoots at high nutrients),but decreasing C:N ratio in Avena shoots. Growth of plants underelevated CO2 decreased the decomposition rate of Vulpialitter, but increased decomposition of Avena litter from the high-nutrient treatment. The impact of elevated CO2 on N loss fromlitter also differed among species, with Vulpia litter from high-CO2 plants releasing N more slowly than ambient-CO2litter, whereas growth under elevated CO2 caused increased Nloss from Avena litter. CO2 effects on N release in Lolium and Bromus depended on the nutrient regime in whichplants were grown. There was no overall relationship between litter C:Nratio and decomposition rate or N release across species and treatments.Based on our study and the literature, we conclude that the effects ofelevated CO2 on decomposition and N release from litter arehighly species-specific. These results do not support the hypothesis thatCO2 effects on litter quality consistently lead to decreasednutrient availability in nutrient-limited ecosystems exposed to elevatedCO2. 相似文献

Long-term effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 on below-ground biomass and transformations to soil organic matter in grassland 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
We determined the effects of elevated [CO2] on the quantity and quality of below-ground biomass and several soil organic matter pools at the conclusion of an eight-year
CO2 enrichment experiment on native tallgrass prairie. Plots in open-top chambers were exposed continuously to ambient and twice-ambient
[CO2] from early April through late October of each year. Soil was sampled to a depth of 30 cm beneath and next to the crowns
of C4 grasses in these plots and in unchambered plots. Elevated [CO2] increased the standing crops of rhizomes (87%), coarse roots (46%), and fibrous roots (40%) but had no effect on root litter
(mostly fine root fragments and sloughed cortex material >500 μm). Soil C and N stocks also increased under elevated [CO2], with accumulations in the silt/clay fraction over twice that of particulate organic matter (POM; >53 μm). The mostly root-like,
light POM (density ≤1.8 Mg m-3) appeared to turn over more rapidly, while the more amorphous and rendered heavy POM (density >1.8 Mg m-3) accumulated under elevated [CO2]. Overall, rhizome and root C:N ratios were not greatly affected by CO2 enrichment. However, elevated [CO2] increased the C:N ratios of root litter and POM in the surface 5 cm and induced a small but significant increase in the
C:N ratio of the silt/clay fraction to a depth of 15 cm. Our data suggest that 8 years of CO2 enrichment may have affected elements of the N cycle (including mineralization, immobilization, and asymbiotic fixation)
but that any changes in N dynamics were insufficient to prevent significant plant growth responses.

Effects of elevated CO2 on plant growth and nutrient partitioning of rice (Oryza sativa L.) at rapid tillering and physiological maturity 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
《Journal of Plant Interactions》2013,8(1):35-42
Abstract This work investigates the relationship between plant growth, grain yield, nutrient acquisition and partitioning in rice (Oryza sativa L.) under elevated CO2. Plants were grown hydroponically in growth chambers with a 12-h photoperiod at either 370 or 700 µmol CO2 mol?1 concentration. Plant dry mass (DM), grain yield and macro- and micronutrient concentrations of vegetative organs and grains were determined. Elevated CO2 increased biomass at tillering, and this was largely due to an increase in root mass by 160%. Elevated CO2 had no effect on total nutrient uptake (N, P, K, Mg and Ca). However, nutrient partitioning among organs was significantly altered. N partitioning to leaf blades was significantly decreased, whereas the N partitioning into the leaf sheaths and roots was increased. Nutrient use efficiency of N, P, K, and Mg in all organs was significantly increased at elevated CO2. At harvest maturity, grain yield was increased by 27% at elevated CO2 while grain (protein) concentration was decreased by a similar magnitude (28%), suggesting that critical nutrient requirements for rice might need to be reassessed with global climate change. 相似文献
