Spawning redd superimposition of introduced, spring-spawning rainbow trout,Oncorhynchus mykiss, on native, fall-spawning Dolly varden,Salvelinus malma, and white-spotted charr,S. leucomaenis, were examined in a small stream in Hokkaido, Japan. The stream reaches in which Dolly Varden and white-sported charr redds were observed in fall 1997 greatly overlapped with the reaches in which rainbow trout redds were recorded in spring 1998. Spawning microhabitats were also similar between trout and the two charr species. Thirteen and 3% of Dolly Varden and white-spotted charr redds, respectively, were superimposed by rainbow trout redds. The eggs or alevins in the disturbed charr redds were potentially damaged because charrs were not likely to have emerged from the redds before the superimposition occurred. In sufficiently great abundance, introduced rainbow trout may negatively impact native charr populations by dislodging the latter’s spawning redds. 相似文献

Intra‐ and interspecific phylogenetic analysis of Dolly Varden Salvelinus malma and white‐spotted charr Salvelinus leucomaenis throughout Hokkaido Island was conducted using nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial DNA control region and three nuclear DNA markers [ribosomal DNA (ITS‐1), microsatellite ( u ‐85), SINE ( Fok ‐223)]. A total of 19 mtDNA haplotypes from 271 individuals of Dolly Varden, nine haplotypes from 134 white‐spotted charr were defined, and identified two well‐supported monophyletic clades for each species. Two haplotypes of Dolly Varden, however, were clustered together in the white‐spotted charr clade. Those haplotypes were found only from several rivers in the Shiretoko Peninsula, and a neighbouring river of that region. Analyses of ribosomal DNA and Fok ‐223 loci revealed that both species are characterized by having completely species‐specific diagnostic sequence and fragment patterns. Dolly Varden of the Shiretoko populations are typically allopatric in distribution where white‐spotted charr do not currently occur. In addition, incongruence in genetic relationships between mtDNA and nuclear DNA markers give strong evidence of historical mtDNA introgression between Dolly Varden and white‐spotted charr. Some white‐spotted charr diagnostic alleles in a nuclear microsatellite locus ( u ‐85) were found in some Shiretoko Dolly Varden populations, suggesting that introgressive hybridization might have also occurred in relatively recent contact and potentially ongoing evolutionary event. Genetic resemblance of chars Salvelinus alpinus krasheninnikovi (Salvelinus malma krasheninnikovi) of 35 samples collected in five Kuril Islands--Shumshu, Paramushir, Onekotan, Iturup, and Kunashir--has been studied by the PCR-RAPD method. In the limits of each island, both resident isolates and anadromous forms give strictly supported clusters distinct from samples from the other islands. The samples from five islands form three superclusters: the first from Kunashir and Iturup Islands, the second from Paramushir and Onekotan Islands, and the third from Shumshu Island. The possible reasons for genetic similarity of resident and anadromous forms of Dolly Varden chars inhabiting reservoirs of a definite island are considered (the founder effect, homing, limited migration). 相似文献

Forestry activities in riparian areas are known to affect stream communities considerably. Not only do riparian deforestation resulting from agriculture or urbanization developments affect stream communities but extensive commercial plantation and forestry practices can alter stream environments adjacent to remaining, intact or secondary forests. Because forestry often includes the construction of logging roads through the riparian zone, this can directly degrade stream environments. Twelve streams in the Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaido were investigated so as to determine the effects of forestry practices on stream temperature, periphyton biomass, grazer (benthic invertebrates) biomass and Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma Walbaum) biomass. The greater the proportion of planted area in the catchment, the higher the stream temperature. Stream temperature directly affects periphyton biomass and Dolly Varden biomass negatively. Neither stream temperature nor periphyton biomass predicted grazer biomass, whereas a positive correlation was found between grazer biomass and Dolly Varden biomass that forage on invertebrates. The overall results indicated that Dolly Varden in the Shiretoko streams were negatively affected by forestry practices and the resultant stream temperature increases. Without effective future riparian forest management, the complex effects of both riparian disturbance and ongoing global warming could further reduce Dolly Varden populations in the region. 相似文献

- Animal migrations often evolve to exploit seasonal variation in foraging opportunities. Many migrants move among discrete habitats using environmental cues to time their arrivals with seasonal peaks in food abundance. This type of migratory behaviour has been hypothesized to be particularly vulnerable to climate change, which can generate asynchrony between the seasonal timing (phenology) of animal movements and periods of resource abundance in destination habitats.
- While many studies have documented climate‐induced mismatches between migrants and the lower trophic levels they target, virtually none have explored the consequences of altered migration phenology on the higher trophic levels that migrants often subsidise. We explored the roles of climatic variation and prey migrations in driving the seasonal migrations of predators.
- We show that in a warming catchment where prey migrations have changed substantially over the last 4 decades, migrations of Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma) (predator) remain synchronised with annually variable Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) (prey) migrations and appear to be cued directly by salmon migration rather than environmental conditions.
- In contrast to many previous studies, our results suggest that some wide‐ranging predators may be resilient to altered prey phenology.

The variation of migration patterns in Dolly Varden Salvelinus malma in a stream with an artificial dam (erosion-control-dam) in the Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaido Island, Japan, at the southernmost part of its distribution, was examined by otolith Sr:Ca ratio analysis. All specimens from the above-dam area showed consistently low Sr:Ca ratios (<5.0 × 10−3) throughout the otolith. In contrast, many specimens from the below-dam area had higher ratios (>5.0 × 10−3) throughout the otolith or only at the outer part than do those from the above-dam area. This higher ratio is probably due to salinity effects. Specimen from the below-dam area could be divided into three types: (1) Consistently low Sr:Ca ratios throughout the otolith, being freshwater residents. (2) Low Sr:Ca ratios around the inner part of the otolith, and thereafter higher ratios toward the outer part, being typically anadromous. (3) Relatively higher Sr:Ca ratios throughout many or in some parts of the otolith, indicating that these have migrated from the freshwater to brackish water or seawater from the early life stage. These findings suggest that Dolly Varden has a high degree of plasticity in its migratory behavior. 相似文献

The northern Dolly Varden, Salvelinus malma malma, is a typical representative of arctic fauna distributed in northeastern Asia and northwestern North America. Because its spawning habitats were affected by Pleistocene glacial advances over most of its natural range, S. m. malma is among the most interesting objects of phylogeographic and microevolutionary studies. We reconstructed the genealogy of mtDNA haplotypes from 27 Alaskan and Asian populations to study the influence of glacial and geological vicariance events on the contemporary population genetic structure, phylogeographic subdivision and distribution of the northern Dolly Varden. Analysis of restriction site states in three PCR‐amplified mtDNA regions (ND1/ND2, ND5/ND6, Cytb/D‐loop; 47% of the mitochondrial genome) resolved 75 haplotypes in 436 fish. Similar patterns of subspecific variation apparent from hierarchical diversity and nested clade analyses of mtDNA haplotypes identify weak spatial differentiation and low levels of divergence. Our results suggest that (1) demographic history has been influenced by historical range expansions and recent isolation by distance, (2) present populations from Asia and North America were colonized from one main Beringian Refugium, and (3) that this taxon's ancestral population probably experienced a bottleneck in the Beringian Refugium during the late Pleistocene (Wisconsin) glacial period. 相似文献

Numerous low-head dams have been constructed for erosion control and installed in almost all mountainous streams in Japan.
Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaido, is considered as one of the most intact areas in Japan, however, more than 331 low-head dams
have been installed in 39 streams of the peninsula since the 1960s. In this study, the density of stream-dwelling Dolly Varden
(Salvelinus malma) and the habitat characteristics in dam-installed sections were investigated in Shiretoko streams and compared with unaltered
sections in which no dams have been installed as a reference. Fish density in dam-installed sections was significantly lower
than reference sections. Canopy cover, maximum temperature, wetted width, frequencies of pebble, bedrock and boulder, and
areas of rapid, glide and riffle was significantly differed between dam-installed and reference sections. High stream temperature,
occurrence of glides, and loss of boulder in dam-installed sections may reduce the suitability of habitats for fish and minimize
the population size. We suggest that negative effects of dam installations on Dolly Varden populations have occurred in Shiretoko

Borealization is a type of community reorganization where Arctic specialists are replaced by species with more boreal distributions in response to climatic warming. The process of borealization is often exemplified by the northward range expansions and subsequent proliferation of boreal species on the Pacific and Atlantic inflow Arctic shelves (i.e., Bering/Chukchi and Barents seas, respectively). But the circumpolar nearshore distribution of Arctic-boreal fishes that predates recent warming suggests borealization is possible beyond inflow shelves. To examine this question, we revisited two nearshore lagoons in the eastern Alaska Beaufort Sea (Kaktovik and Jago lagoons, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska, USA), a High Arctic interior shelf. We compared summer fish species assemblage, catch rate, and size distribution among three periods that spanned a 30-year record (baseline conditions, 1988–1991; moderate sea ice decline, 2003–2005; rapid sea ice decline, 2017–2019). Fish assemblages differed among periods in both lagoons, consistent with borealization. Among Arctic specialists, a clear decline in fourhorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus quadricornis, Kanayuq in Iñupiaq) occurred in both lagoons with 86%–90% lower catch rates compared with the baseline period. Among the Arctic-boreal species, a dramatic 18- to 19-fold increase in saffron cod (Eleginus gracilis, Uugaq) occurred in both lagoons. Fish size (length) distributions demonstrated increases in the proportion of larger fish for most species examined, consistent with increasing survival and addition of age-classes. These field data illustrate borealization of an Arctic nearshore fish community during a period of rapid warming. Our results agree with predictions that Arctic-boreal fishes (e.g., saffron cod) are well positioned to exploit the changing Arctic ecosystem. Another Arctic-boreal species, Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma, Iqalukpik), appear to have already responded to warming by shifting from Arctic nearshore to shelf waters. Westslope cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki lewisi, WCT) and introduced rainbow trout (O. mykiss, RBT) readily hybridize and introgression has occurred in many drainages across the historic native range of WCT. In British Columbia (Canada), the upper Kootenay River drainage is the heart of the westslope cutthroat trout (WCT, Oncorhynchus clarki lewisi) distribution in Canada this drainage harbours native WCT gene pools that are thought to be under threat from hybridization with introduced rainbow trout (RBT, O. mykiss). In this study, we assess the extent and distribution of WCT × RBT hybridization in the upper Kootenay River drainage. We used four diagnostic nuclear loci to determine the extent of hybridization in 981 fish collected from 23 sample localities across 12 different streams in the upper Kootenay River drainage. About 14% (142/981) of individuals were identified as hybrids (an individual with both RBT and WCT alleles), 3.4% (33/981) were identified as pure RBT, and the remaining individuals were identified as pure WCT. Although pure RBT were absent from the majority of locales (20/23), we found evidence of hybridization at 78% (18/23) of the localities and the percentage of heterospecific alleles (% I) ranged from 0.7% to 97.1%. Only 22% (5/23) of the localities showed no evidence of hybridization. Spatial analysis showed clustering among hybridized locations and decreasing hybridization with increasing distance from Koocanusa Reservoir, suggesting that the reservoir acts as a RBT source. We found no evidence that stream order, stream magnitude, or stream elevation influenced the extent of hybridization among localities. We compared our results to an analysis conducted in 1986, which indicated that hybridization is relatively recent in the upper Kootenay River drainage and that it is increasing in magnitude and distribution. In the absence of timely management intervention, the genetic integrity of WCT populations in the heart of their Canadian range may be lost. Our results indicate the dynamic nature of hybridization in fluvial systems and that for closely related taxa such as WCT and RBT, hybridization appears to be largely influenced by physical barriers to dispersal and contact between species. 相似文献

The invasive Burmese python (Python bivittatus) has been reproducing in the Florida Everglades since the 1980s. These giant constrictor snakes have caused a precipitous decline in small mammal populations in southern Florida following escapes or releases from the commercial pet trade. To better understand the invasion pathway and genetic composition of the population, two mitochondrial (mtDNA) loci across 1,398 base pairs were sequenced on 426 snakes and 22 microsatellites were assessed on 389 snakes. Concatenated mtDNA sequences produced six haplotypes with an average nucleotide and haplotype diversity of π = 0.002 and h = 0.097, respectively. Samples collected in Florida from morphologically identified P. bivittatus snakes were similar to published cytochrome oxidase 1 and cytochrome b sequences from both P. bivittatus and Python molurus and were highly divergent (genetic distances of 5.4% and 4.3%, respectively). The average number of microsatellite alleles and expected heterozygosity were NA = 5.50 and HE = 0.60, respectively. Nuclear Bayesian assignment tests supported two genetically distinct groups and an admixed group, not geographically differentiated. The effective population size (NE = 315.1) was lower than expected for a population this large, but reflected the low genetic diversity overall. The patterns of genetic diversity between mtDNA and microsatellites were disparate, indicating nuclear introgression of separate mtDNA lineages corresponding to cytonuclear discordance. The introgression likely occurred prior to the invasion, but genetic information on the native range and commercial trade is needed for verification. Our finding that the Florida python population is comprised of distinct lineages suggests greater standing variation for adaptation and the potential for broader areas of suitable habitat in the invaded range. 相似文献

Synopsis Morphometric and meristic information confirmed the Salvelinus in Pinto Lake, Alberta, to be bull charr. The population was essentially electrophoretically monomorphic. Sub-yearling bull charr in Pinto Lake grew more slowly than fish from other populations in Alberta. Growth rate after the first year appeared to be linear until age 8 when growth declined. Thirteen newly developed tri- and tetranucleotide repeat microsatellite markers were developed for Lahontan cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki henshawi), a threatened subspecies endemic to the Lahontan hydrographic basin in the western USA. These loci are highly polymorphic with five to 30 alleles per locus and observed heterozygosities ranging from 0.4 to 0.7. Cross-species amplification of these markers was most successful in the closely related rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, with only three loci amplifying in brown trout, Salmo trutta. Nonoverlapping allelic distributions for many of these loci among the six salmonid species screened suggest these markers may be useful for hybrid determination. 相似文献

Human-mediated hybridization is a leading cause of biodiversity loss worldwide. How hybridization affects fitness and what level of hybridization is permissible pose difficult conservation questions with little empirical information to guide policy and management decisions. This is particularly true for salmonids, where widespread introgression among non-native and native taxa has often created hybrid swarms over extensive geographical areas resulting in genomic extinction. Here, we used parentage analysis with multilocus microsatellite markers to measure how varying levels of genetic introgression with non-native rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) affect reproductive success (number of offspring per adult) of native westslope cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi) in the wild. Small amounts of hybridization markedly reduced fitness of male and female trout, with reproductive success sharply declining by approximately 50 per cent, with only 20 per cent admixture. Despite apparent fitness costs, our data suggest that hybridization may spread due to relatively high reproductive success of first-generation hybrids and high reproductive success of a few males with high levels of admixture. This outbreeding depression suggests that even low levels of admixture may have negative effects on fitness in the wild and that policies protecting hybridized populations may need reconsideration. 相似文献

Hybridization with introduced rainbow trout threatens most native westslope cutthroat trout populations. Understanding the genetic effects of hybridization and introgression requires a large set of high-throughput, diagnostic genetic markers to inform conservation and management. Recently, we identified several thousand candidate single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers based on RAD sequencing of 11 westslope cutthroat trout and 13 rainbow trout individuals. Here, we used flanking sequence for 56 of these candidate SNP markers to design high-throughput genotyping assays. We validated the assays on a total of 92 individuals from 22 populations and seven hatchery strains. Forty-six assays (82%) amplified consistently and allowed easy identification of westslope cutthroat and rainbow trout alleles as well as heterozygote controls. The 46 SNPs will provide high power for early detection of population admixture and improved identification of hybrid and nonhybridized individuals. This technique shows promise as a very low-cost, reliable and relatively rapid method for developing and testing SNP markers for nonmodel organisms with limited genomic resources. 相似文献

A suite of 26 PCR‐based markers was developed that differentiates rainbow (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and coastal cutthroat trout (O. clarki clarki). The markers also differentiated rainbow from other cutthroat trout subspecies (O. clarki), and several of the markers differentiated between cutthroat trout subspecies. This system has numerous positive attributes, including: nonlethal sampling, high species‐specificity and products that are easily identified and scored using agarose gel electrophoresis. The methodology described for developing the markers can be applied to virtually any system in which numerous markers are desired for identifying or differentiating species or subspecies. 相似文献

Nonnative trout invasions have caused the widespread decline of cutthroat trout populations in western North America. In contrast
to other nonnative salmonids, the role of nonnative brown trout in native cutthroat trout decline is poorly understood. Specifically,
the level of ecological similarity that occurs between these species and the importance of other trophic mechanisms (e.g.,
predation) in their interactions are key uncertainties. We evaluated the trophic relationships of brown trout and cutthroat
trout in a northern Utah river using a combination of diet and stable isotope analyses. We compared the dietary habits of
these two species using multiple and complementary measures. Based on both stomach contents and δ13C signatures, we found that these species consumed a similar and opportunistic diet (i.e., they were nonselective in their
foraging patterns). However, at most sizes, brown trout ingested larger prey—including fishes—and occupied a higher relative
trophic position (i.e., δ15N) than cutthroat trout. Overall, these results demonstrate a high degree of dietary similarity and therefore strengthen earlier
conclusions regarding interspecific competition between these two species. Our study, when considered alongside the work of
others, suggests there is potential for predatory interactions between these species (i.e., brown trout preying on small cutthroat
trout). We believe that future research on brown trout–cutthroat trout interactions should consider predatory effects in greater
detail.
