SUMMARY. 1. Egg survival (ES, percentage of eggs hatched in vitro ), reproductive success (RS, percentage of live young released from the brood pouch) and brood development lime ( d , days) in four populations of Gammarus fossarum and two populations of Gammarus roeseli were studied, in the laboratory at water temperatures of 2.0–26.1°C. Intraspecific differences between populations were not significant, but interspecific differences were found between the two species.
2. In natural stream populations, the reproductive period of G. fossarum lasted from December to September, that of G. roeseli from March to September.
3. In the experimental temperature range 2–26°C, 73% of the total number (771) of G. fossarum females and 69% of 469 G. roeseli females were ovigerous. Of these, 45% of G. fossarum and 43% of G. roeseli females successfully released live young from their brood pouches.
4. For G. fossarum , the optimum temperatures were 11.4°C for ES, where 76% of the eggs hatched, and 11.8°C for RS, where 77% of the females released live young from their brood pouches. For G. roseli , the optimum temperatures were 13.5°C for ES (51% hatched) and 14.0°C for RS (76% released). Over 50% of eggs hatched at temperatures of 3.6–19.2°C in G. fossarum and at 1 1.9–15.1°C in G. roeseli . Development time increased from 12 days at 21.9°C to 251 days at 2.0°C in G. fossarum , and from 10 days at 24.1°C to 212 days at 4.1°C in G. roeseli .

Manipulative endoparasites with complex life cycles can alter their intermediate host immunity and behaviour in ways that increase survival probability within the host body cavity and enhance successful transmission to the definitive host. These parasitic manipulations are variable among and within parasite species and may result from co-evolutionary processes, in which the parasite is constrained for adaptation to the local intermediate host. Hence, arrival of a new host species in a local host population may promote local parasite maladaptation. This study tested the occurrence of local adaptation in two distantly located populations of the acanthocephalan parasite Pomphorhynchus laevis and its effect on the immunity and behaviour of its gammarid intermediate host Gammarus roeseli. This was done in France (an area for which G. roeseli is a recent invader) and Hungary (an area from which G. roeseli was believed to be native). As expected, we found no alteration in G. roeseli's immune defence and behaviour associated with infection by P. laevis in localities, where the gammarid is invasive. Unexpectedly, we found similar results in Hungarian populations, where the parasite was even more exposed to the host immune response. Whilst these results suggest maladaptation of the parasite to the gammarid in both countries, they also suggest that the gammarid host might be locally adapted to the parasite. Genetic analyses were performed on both the parasite and the host and the results suggest that the two subsets of populations we studied harbour rather isolated host-parasite systems, both probably deriving from a common ancestral population. We propose that G. roeseli is also of recent acquisition in Hungary, and that a recent co-evolutionary history between P. laevis and G. roeseli in association with a long generation time in the parasite has constrained parasite adaptations in Europe or even favoured host adaptation to the parasite.  相似文献

Evolutionary processes do not affect all character types equally. Depending on environmental effects, morphological and ecological evolution may be uncoupled from molecular evolution. A natural contact zone between two forms of the amphipod Gammarus fossarum was used to assess the levels of differentiation in genetic, morphological and habitat characters. About 50 individuals per population were analysed for six enzyme loci in 72 populations and four size-standardized morphometric traits in a subset of 32 populations. Nine environmental parameters per population were used to characterize the habitat. All three character sets revealed significant divergences between G. fossarum forms. The eastern form A of G. fossarum differs from the western form B by longer setae at the second antennae (males) and longer exopodits at die third uropods (males and females). The variance partitioning within populations, among populations and between forms, was compared within the three character sets. The relative variance component between forms in genetic characters appeared to be 10-fold greater in comparison to morphological traits, indicating morphological stasis during speciation. The inter-form environmental differentiation was shown to be low, but consistent between pure populations. The eastern form A seems to prefer higher altitudes, a substrate type of gravel, stones and leaves, shading, and water with higher conductivity and pH man the western form B.  相似文献

1. The contribution of environmental calcium to ecophysiological diversity among populations of Gammarus lacustris was investigated by comparing five alpine lakes in France.
2. Calcium concentrations in the water varied with substratum lithology, ranging from 6 mg L–1 in lakes on crystalline (igneous) rocks to 32.7 mg L–1 in lakes on limestone, and up to 248 mg L–1 in a lake with a gypsum environment.
3. The duration of the moult cycle and mortality rate were compared between populations by means of field and in situ laboratory and translocation experiments on adult males. Animals from water with low calcium concentrations showed a significantly longer moult cycle and higher mortality rate than those from water with high calcium concentrations. A significant increase in the duration of the moult cycle was observed in animals translocated to water of lower calcium concentration and vice versa.
4. These results suggest the existence of different physiological races of G. lacustris with an ecophysiological plasticity of calcium metabolism narrower than that of river-dwelling gammarids such as G. fossarum. This may be a consequence of geographic isolation among lacustrine populations together with the relatively stable environmental parameters in lakes.  相似文献

The evolutionary history of the cryptic Gammarus fossarum species complex (Crustacea, Amphipoda) in Central Europe was approached by investigating the genetic variation in populations of a natural contact zone. Nucleotide sequence variation of a 395-bp segment of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene was compared to that of six nuclear allozyme loci. Three major mtDNA lineages were found, the eastern clade being consistent with the former allozyme type A. The two western clades (types B and C) were not distinguished previously. Strong sequence divergence and correlation with nuclear genetic isolation in syntopic populations, however, justifies the specific status of the three G. fossarum types. The common speciation event is believed to be very old (Miocene). The within-type mtDNA variation is probably molded by the ice ages, with type B populations being most affected. Moreover, the patch-like distribution of mtDNA type B lineages in an area near the contact zone corroborates the hypothesis of a recent colonization.  相似文献

Several gammarid species serve as intermediate hosts for the acanthocephalan parasite Polymorphus minutus. This parasite influences gammarid behaviour in order to favour transmission to its ultimate host, generally a bird. We investigated this host manipulation in Gammarus roeseli, a gammarid species introduced in France 150 years ago which now coexists with several exotic species from different origins. In the field, vertical distribution of G. roeseli revealed a higher proportion of infected individuals close to the water's surface and the size distribution of infected gammarids revealed predation pressure on infected individuals. However, under laboratory conditions both infected and non-infected individuals remained benthic. The addition of a second gammarid, Dikerogammarus villosus, to the experimental device involved a vertical displacement of infected G. roeseli towards the water's surface. Dikerogammarus villosus, originating from the Ponto-Caspian basin, can be considered as an aggressive predator. The substitution of D. villosus with Atyaephyra desmarestii, a planktivore decapod, did not alter the gammarids' distribution, with both infected and uninfected G. roeseli staying benthic. Thus, biotic interactions between D. villosus and G. roeseli represent selective pressure encouraging the expression of manipulated behaviour in infected amphipods. Through manipulation, P. minutus was found to increase the survival of infected G. roeseli when faced with non-host predators and to make it more vulnerable to predation by the parasite's definitive host.  相似文献

The relationship between the exposure of organisms to chemicals and subsequent alterations in various biochemical processes (commonly referred to as biomarkers) is of growing importance in environmental and ecotoxicological research. However, parasites which also affect the physiological homeostasis of their hosts, and thus may alter biomarker reactions, are usually ignored in environmental research. To address this deficit, we have used the host-parasite system Gammarus roeseli naturally infected with cystacanths of the acanthocephalan Polymorphus minutus to investigate whether infection of gammarids with parasites alters their heat shock protein response following exposure to palladium (Pd). After 24 days of metal exposure relative levels of heat shock protein hsp70 were analysed in the tissues of parasites and intermediate hosts. Simultaneously, the metal accumulation in gammarids and parasites was determined. As none of the infected gammarids showed hsp70 levels at the end of the Pd exposure (either exposed or not), infected and unparasitized G. roeseli were exposed to heat. Again, only uninfected gammarids showed a temperature-dependent increase in hsp70 levels. Interestingly, although the intermediate hosts showed no hsp70 response, exposure to Pd and heat results in increasing hsp70 in the parasites within in the haemocoel of G. roeseli. Heat experiments with isolated cystacanths also showed increasing hsp70 levels in P. minutus with temperature. Concerning uninfected G. roeseli, exposure to Pd and heat causes a hsp70 response. Pd concentrations were found to be higher in the larval parasites than in the gammarids. This result clearly contradicts previous results, as high metal accumulation was so far only described from adult acanthocephalans. Our findings provide experimental evidence that parasites alter the biomarker responses of their host and that the infection status of test animals is extremely important for ecotoxicological studies.  相似文献

We characterized the first microsatellite markers for Gammarus fossarum. Eight loci gave satisfactory amplification patterns in two stream populations (Southern France) with number of alleles ranging from 2 to 10 and expected heterozygosity from 0.076 to 0.857. We performed cross-amplification in two closely related gammarid species, Gammarus pulex and Gammarus orinos. Among the eight tested microsatellite loci, four correctly amplified in G. pulex and three in G. orinos.  相似文献

The acid-sensitive amphipod Gammarus fossarum was exposed in situ for 24, 96 and 168 h to 18 streams (9 draining from granite and 9 draining from sandstone bedrock), selected in order to provide a wide range of acidification. After 24 h, exposure to slightly acidic (6.00 < or = pH < or = 5.50) and strongly acidic water (pH < 5.50) led to a severe and significant depletion in haemolymph [Na+] and [Cl-] compared to organisms exposed in circumneutral water. Highly significant linear correlations between stream mean pH value and haemolymph [Na+] and [Cl-] were observed for each exposure time on each bedrock. Organisms exposed to slightly acid streams draining granite bedrock (pH = 5.71, pH = 5.81) showed a physiological adaptation after 96 h of exposure, while animals in acidic sandstone streams did not. Results of this study indicate that haemolymph [Na+] and [Cl-] in G. fossarum could be an effective ecophysiological marker for monitoring freshwater ecosystem acidification.  相似文献

Carotenoid compositions of two freshwater Gammarus species (Crustacea: Amphipoda) and of their common acanthocephalan parasite Polymorphus minutus were characterized. The effect of carotenoid uptake by the parasite was addressed by comparing the carotenoid content of uninfected and infected female hosts. Using high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), co-chromatography of reference pigments and electron ionization mass spectrometry of collected HPLC fractions (EI-MS), several xanthophylls and non-polar compounds were identified. Seven kinds of carotenoids, mainly xanthophylls, were identified in gammarids. Astaxanthin was predominant, amounting to 40 wt.% of total carotenoid in both uninfected G. pulex and G. roeseli. By contrast, we found only non-polar compounds with a predominance of esterified forms of astaxanthin in P. minutus larvae. No significant effect of infection on carotenoid content was evidenced in G. pulex and G. roeseli females. Our study highlights the use of a Matrix Solid Phase Dispersion as an efficient extraction method of both xanthophylls and non-polar pigments in small samples, including lipid-rich ones as P. minutus parasite. We discuss on the presumptive pathway leading to the formation of free astaxanthin in gammarids via hydroxy compounds, and on the accumulation of esters of astaxanthin in parasites.  相似文献

During two decades (1968–1988) the occurrence of Gammarus was studied in Hessian running waters draining some 7700 km2 of the Fulda-Eder-basin and two adjacent areas. About 1530 sites were sampled, most of them in 1968, 1978, 1981/82 and 1985, which made comparisons possible, primarily with respect to space, but partly also to time. After consideration of the relief of the landscape, geological conditions, and water-quality in the neighbourhood of human settlements, lack of oxygen (due to organic pollution) and low pH (souring) can be recognized as the most important factors which influence and alter natural distribution patterns of Gammarus fossarum, G. pulex and G. roeseli. Both vanishing and recovering populations were observed in the course of twenty years.  相似文献

A central problem in evolutionary physiology is to understand the relationship between energy metabolism and fitness-related traits. Most attempts to do so have been based on phenotypic correlations that are not informative for the evolutionary potential of natural populations. Here, we explored the effect of contrasting ethanol environments on physiological and developmental traits, their genetic (co)variances and genetic architecture in Drosophila melanogaster. Phenotypic and genetic parameters were estimated in two populations (San Fernando and Valdivia, Chile), using a half-sib family design where broods were split into ethanol-free and ethanol-supplemented conditions. Our findings show that metabolic rate, body mass and development times were sensitive (i.e., phenotypic plasticity) to ethanol conditions and dependent on population origin. Significant heritabilities were found for all traits, while significant genetic correlations were only found between larval and total development time and between development time and metabolic rate for flies of the San Fernando population developed in ethanol-free conditions. Posterior analyses indicated that the G matrices differed between ethanol conditions for the San Fernando population (mainly explained by differences in genetic (co)variances of developmental traits), whereas the Valdivia population exhibited similar G matrices between ethanol conditions. Our findings suggest that ethanol-free environment increases the energy available to reduce development time. Therefore, our results indicate that environmental ethanol could modify the process of energy allocation, which could have consequences on the evolutionary response of natural populations of D. melanogaster.  相似文献

The acanthocephalan parasite Polymorphus minutus is a manipulator of its intermediate host Gammarus roeseli, which favours its transmission to the final host, a water bird. In contaminated environments, G. roeseli have to cope with two stresses, i.e. P. minutus infection and pollutants. As P. minutus survival relies on its host's survival, we investigated the influence of P. minutus on the antitoxic defence capacities and the energy reserves of G. roeseli females after cadmium exposure. In parallel, malondialdehyde, a toxic effect biomarker, was measured in G. roeseli females and in P. minutus. The results revealed that infected females displayed higher cell damage than uninfected ones, despite an apparent increase in reduced glutathione and metallothionein production. In fact, the increase of these antitoxic systems could be counterbalanced by carotenoid intake by the parasite, so that the overall defence system seemed less efficient in infected females than in uninfected ones. In addition, we demonstrated that cadmium induced cell damage in P. minutus, probably linked with cadmium accumulation in the parasite. Altogether, we observed a paradoxical pattern of responses suggesting that P. minutus increases cadmium toxicity in G. roeseli females although (i) it tends to increase several host antitoxic defence capacities and (ii) it bears part of the pollutant, as reflected by cell damage in the parasite.  相似文献

1.  The populations of many UK farmland birds declined between 1970 and 1990, frequently accompanied by contractions in breeding ranges. Ornithological atlas data, land use data and environmental data at the scale of 10-km squares were used to investigate the relationship between local extinctions and habitat suitability for six species, and to predict where future losses are most likely.
2.  For each species we tested the hypothesis that local extinctions were concentrated in environments that were inherently less suitable. We also tested the hypothesis that spatial patterns of loss were not independent between species due to their concurrence in the same habitats.
3.  Multivariate analyses (PCA) showed that areas where each species became extinct between 1970 and 1990 were more similar in land use type, climate and topography to areas where a species was never present than those where it was retained; local extinction was more likely in less suitable environments. Multiple logistic regression showed that for five of the six species the environmental gradient best predicting presence or absence in 1970 was also that best predicting loss between 1970 and 1990. For the six species studied, local extinctions were least likely in lowland arable areas.
4.  For any pair of species, local extinctions were more frequent outside the area of overlap of the two species' ranges than inside. Within the area of overlap, species tended to be lost from the same squares. For each species, likelihood of local extinction declined with increasing number of the other five species present.
5.  We used model parameters to map the probability of future local extinctions of the six species considered, allowing the identification of key areas for conservation management at a spatial scale appropriate to agri-economic incentives.  相似文献

Aim  We examined the genetic structure among populations and regions for the springtails Cryptopygus antarcticus antarcticus and Gomphiocephalus hodgsoni (Collembola) to identify potential historical refugia and subsequent colonization routes, and to examine population growth/expansion and relative ages of population divergence.
Location  Antarctic Peninsula for C. a. antarcticus ; Antarctic continent (southern Victoria Land) for G. hodgsoni .
Methods  Samples were collected from 24 and 28 locations across the Antarctic Peninsula and southern Victoria Land regions for C. a. antarcticus and G. hodgsoni , respectively. We used population genetic, demographic and nested clade analyses based on mitochondrial DNA (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and subunit II).
Results  Both species were found to have population structures compatible with the presence of historical glacial refugia on Pleistocene (2 Ma–present) time-scales, followed by post-glacial expansion generating contemporary geographically isolated populations. However, G. hodgsoni populations were characterized by a fragmented pattern with several 'phylogroups' (likely ancestral haplotypes present in high frequency) retaining strong ancestral linkages among present-day populations. Conversely, C. a. antarcticus had an excess of rare haplotypes with a much reduced volume of ancestral lineages, possibly indicating historical founder/bottleneck events and widespread expansion.
Main conclusions  We infer that these differences reflect distinct evolutionary histories in each locality despite the resident species having similar life-history characteristics. We suggest that this has predominantly been influenced by variation in the success of colonization events as a result of intrinsic historical glaciological differences between the Antarctic Peninsula and continental Antarctic environments.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The annual herb Arabidopsis thaliana is a prime model organism of plant molecular genetics, and is currently used to explore the molecular basis of resistance to herbivores. However, both the magnitude and the causes of variation in resistance among natural populations of A. thaliana are poorly known. The hypotheses (a) that resistance to a specialist herbivore, the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), is positively related to the density of leaf trichomes, and (b) that oviposition preference by female moths is positively correlated to larval performance on different populations and maternal lines of the host plant were examined.
2. Variation in leaf trichome density and resistance to P. xylostella within and among six natural populations of A. thaliana in Sweden was quantified . Resistance was quantified by examining the number of eggs laid on plants exposed to ovipositing female moths and by monitoring larval development on plants of different origin.
3. Trichome density varied significantly among populations; for 4-week-old plants (exposed to ovipositing moths), it also varied significantly among maternal families within populations. The rate of oviposition varied significantly both among populations and among families within populations. This variation could partly be explained by a negative relationship between trichome density and egg number, and a positive relationship between plant size and egg number. Time to pupation, pupal mass, and time to adult eclosion did not vary among populations or maternal lines of the host plant, and offspring performance was not related to P. xylostella oviposition preference . The results indicate that A. thaliana populations may respond to selection for increased resistance to P. xylostella , and suggest that trichome production contributes to resistance against this specialist herbivore.  相似文献

1. The effect of temperature on embryonic development was compared in four populations, two bisexual and two unisexual, of Ephoron shigae , including one each near the northern and southern periphery of the species range in Japan.
2. Eggs from every population were chilled at 4, 8 or 12 °C for diapause development after 50 days at 20 °C for pre-diapause development (experiment I). Some eggs hatched during chilling at 8 °C or 12 °C, whereas no eggs hatched at 4 °C. The rate of hatching in a given condition of chilling was higher for the eggs from warmer winter environments.
3. Chilling at 4 or 8 °C effectively facilitated diapause development. Chilling at 12 °C was, in general, not so effective, but relatively effective for the eggs from warmer winter environments.
4. Eggs were incubated at 8, 12, 15 or 20 °C after chilling at 4 °C to examine the effect of temperature on post-diapause development (experiment II). The eggs incubated at higher temperature after chilling hatched quicker and more synchronously and had higher hatching success.
5. The relationship between temperature and the days required for hatching after chilling was well described by the power function. There was no significant difference in the slope of the regression lines (i.e. temperature dependency) among local populations. However, a longer time was required for hatching at a given temperature for the population from the colder winter environment.
6. There was no detectable difference in the observed intraspecific variations between unisexual and bisexual populations.  相似文献
