Summary Many Australian plant species and communities appear to be threatened by tourism. A review of management plans, recovery plans and a survey of experts found that tourism was considered to be a direct or indirect threatening process for 72 plant taxa. This is one fifth of threatened species for which threats have been identified. In addition, many more species are listed as threatened by weeds, trampling, pathogens, clearing and collecting. These are often indirect impacts of tourism, particularly in conservation reserves where tourism is the only commercial activity permitted. Tourism was also considered to be a threatening process for several plant communities. A lack of recognition of the importance of direct and indirect impacts of tourism may potentially hinder the conservation of plant species and communities both in Australia and overseas. It may also limit the effectiveness of sustainable tourism policies, particularly in conservation reserves. 相似文献

Ceratophyllum spp., Callitriche spp., Zannichellia spp. and Potamogeton pectinatus L. are widespread submerged macrophyte species, often occurring at high abundance and forming an integral part of the vegetation
of many types of shallow aquatic systems. Several species occur in both freshwater and brackish water habitats. Most have
a mixed reproduction system and can reproduce sexually by seeds and propagate asexually by rhizomes, turions, root tubers
or axillary tubers. It is hypothesized that sexual propagules are more important than vegetative fragments to ensure long-distance-dispersal,
which in case of frequent bird or water flow-mediated dispersal should lead to lowered genetic differentiation. At a regional
level, we used dominant ISSR markers in a multi-species approach and observed the largest clonal differentiation between brackish
water and freshwater populations of the western European lowland (Belgium). Differentiation was pronounced at taxon level
(e.g. Zannichellia), as a salinity gradient (P. pectinatus) or as a coastal-to-inland conductivity gradient (Callitriche obtusangula). These differences and trends suggested a very limited dispersal at regional level across both habitats and regions. To
test the hypothesis whether vegetative reproduction and dispersal may have an important function in maintenance of the species
at local scale, we investigated the microsatellite diversity and clonal distribution within and between populations of P. pectinatus from a single catchment, representing upstream forest ponds and downstream river sites along the Woluwe (Brussels, Belgium).
Clonal diversity was low on average, however, with a higher number of multilocus genotypes in upstream forest ponds than in
downstream river sites. A few but abundant clones were present along various stretches of the river indicating clonal spread
and establishment over larger distances within the river. Clonal dispersal at a local scale was more pronounced in river than
in pond habitats, indicating a higher relative importance of water flow than bird-mediated dispersal for establishment of
P. pectinatus in river sites. Dispersal of seeds and establishment of seedlings were assumed more effective within ponds than in river
habitats. Upstream forest ponds can be regarded as source populations and refuges of clonal diversity for recolonization of

The effects of microhabitat differentiation on small-scale plant community structure in the Chiuhuahuan Desert were studied using multivariate analysis. The results showed that microhabitats (i.e., kangaroo rat mounds, ant mounds, shrubs, half-shrubs, and open areas) played a critical role in structuring small-scale plant community structure and maintaining species diversity. Annual plants were much more sensitvive to the presence of differentiated microhabitats than perennials and winter annuals exhibited stronger microhabitat perferences than summer annuals. Species diversity was highest on ant mounds while open areas supported the lowest diversity during both winter and summer. Biomass was highest in the shrub habitats followed by kangaroo rat mounds, ant mounds, half-shrubs, and open areas. Much of the diversity of these plants could be explained by the individualistic responses of species to the biotic effect of other plants or to disturbance by animals, or individualistic responses of species to differences in microenvironments. 相似文献

Biotic interactions via the struggle for control of energy and the interactive effects of biota with their physical environment characterize Van Valen's Red Queen (VRQ). Here, we review new evidence for and against a VRQ view of the world from studies of increasing temporal and spatial scales. Interactions among biota and with the physical environment are important for generating and maintaining diversity on diverse timescales, but detailed mechanisms remain poorly understood. We recommend directly estimating the effect of biota and the physical environment on ecological and evolutionary processes. Promising approaches for elucidating VRQ include using mathematical modelling, controlled experimental systems, sampling and processes-oriented approaches for analysing data from natural systems, while paying extra attention to biotic interactions discernable from the fossil record. 相似文献

Community processes are now undergoing substantial reconfiguration because of climate change. Although the effects of climate change on ecosystems are currently a major concern, the issues tightly associated with winter climate change have been underrepresented. Given the importance of winter climate variables and events for determining the spatial distribution of communities and their phenological and physiological responses, and the functional roles of each species, all of which are expected to substantially influence community dis/re-assemble in the future, this review focuses on the ecological responses and consequences of terrestrial communities to changing winter climate. In particular, the effects on processes supported by biological interactions are largely undetermined. In this context, focusing on plant–soil feedback as a major interactive multi-system is worthwhile; these interactions can be disentangled through careful evaluation of the functional roles of organisms involved in the feedback (i.e., plants and soil organisms). The underlying mechanisms are indeed complex because direct (i.e., changes in physical conditions) and indirect pathways (i.e., plant-mediated influences on soil-organisms and vice versa) from winter climate change influence the functionality of future ecosystems. To face these issues, the framework of response–effect-traits deserves research priority since this can define community re-organization as the accumulated responses of individual species, which determines the stability and performance of ecosystem functioning. Thus, research that quantifies functional responses and roles of organisms under a changing climate will continue to be essential for the issues of winter climate change, which may become more serious and significant in the near future. 相似文献

Where vegetation is managed for nature conservation, results should be assessed against criteria linked to the objectives of management. An assessment method is presented in which the goal vegetation was defined as a specific biotope limited by a set of biophysical conditions. Vegetation was sampled from field boundary strips intended for the conservation of arable plant communities. Species suited to the specified conditions (suited species) were defined by applying rule sets to a matrix of species with their traits and habitat preferences, compiled from a range of data sources. The proportional contribution of suited species to the total vegetation was calculated for each set of conditions. Scores for each condition (suited species scores) were combined to provide overall comparative site values representing the extent to which the goal vegetation was established. There was close correlation with results of a previous assessment by expert opinion poll. Variation between sites in soil type and cultivation frequency was reflected by differences in individual suited species scores. Ideally, suited species selection would be by traits alone but currently there are insufficient data available. The method is readily applicable to other vegetation types. 相似文献

Seed germination triggered by light exposure (positive photoblastism) has been determined in quantitative studies for numerous plant families and species. For Cactaceae, positive photoblastism is thought to be associated with life form and seed mass, but this association has never been evaluated. To explore hypotheses on associations between seed mass, seed dispersal, seed dormancy, life form, taxa and plant height with Relative Light Germination (RLG) in Cactaceae, we evaluated the effect of light on seed germination of 136 taxa. The taxa studied are native to several countries: México, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Perú, USA, and Venezuela. Seed traits contrasted with RLG were life form, seed mass, seed dispersal, seed dormancy, adult plant height and taxon. We found some differences between RLG among taxa; Cacteae, Pachycereeae and Trichocereeae had higher RLG than Notocacteae. RLG was lower for seeds from taller than for shorter taxa, and lower for taxa with heavier seeds than for taxa with lighter seeds. Dispersal syndrome groups varied with RLG. RLG did not differ between cylindrical and globose taxa. Trends found here were in agreement with expectations for small-seeded species to have a light requirement to germinate more often than large-seeded species. This is the first time that cactus height is related to photoblastism. It is possible that seeds from tall plants are larger and thus have the capacity to produce taller seedlings than those from small plants, and that seedlings from large seeds with more resources have the ability to emerge from greater soil depths than those from small seeds. 相似文献

The distribution and amount of biological colonisation on the “Lungotevere” walls (Rome) were analysed to assess the ecological role of the main environmental parameters (solar irradiation, rain winds, prevailing winds) and of the nearby tree covering. The floral data indicate a close similarity of species in the stations examined and a dominance of Chroococcus lithophilus Ercegovic among the cyanobacteria and of Erigeron karvinskianus DC among the vascular plants. In these very hard conditions the exposure and amount of the water input do not seem to influence the flora qualitatively as much as it does quantitatively. The low value of microflora, as found in areas characterised by the presence of trees, can be referred to as resulting from the “umbrella” effect of the plants. The macroflora is less influenced by such effects due to the greater capacity of these plants to derive moisture through their roots. 相似文献

In order to clarify distinctions among cAMP-binding protein patterns present in hemopoietic cells of the various major lineages, we have studied extracts from 18 human cell lines by photoaffinity labelling with 8-azido [32P]cAMP, followed by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and autoradiography. Four major cAMP-binding protein bands were noted. These occurred in five recognizable patterns of combinations, each of which was restricted to cells of particular lineages. A distinctive pattern was found in the pluripotent stem cell line K562, confirming its unusual nature compared with other lines committed to myeloid or lymphoid differentiation. Three patterns were noted among the pre-B and early and late B cell lines studied, which may thus define sequential stages of differentiation of this series. These studies indicate the utility of cAMP-binding proteins as a biochemical differentiation marker system. The variety of phenotypes noted further suggests a role for them in the development or expression of specialized cellular functions. 相似文献

Changes in the oligochaete community of the Neva Mouth for the period 1982–1993 are discussed in relation to anthropogenic impacts. A number of community parameters such as species composition, biomass and diversity were generally stable, although local changes were noted. Predominance of eutrophic species, i.e. L. hoffmeisteri, T. tubifex, P. hammoniensis was enhanced, whereas mesotrophic and oligotrophic species — L. isoporus, S. heringianus, T. newaensis disappeared or became less numerous at some stations. The reverse trend was observed at other stations. These phenomena were accompanied by a sharp increase in the variability of biomass and/or diversity, which is regarded as exceeding normal annual fluctuations. The oligochaete community is recognized as a promising indicator of the ecological situation in the Neva Mouth. 相似文献

Summary Current speed and direction measurements collected during summer (January–February) and sping (November–December) of 1984 indicated that currents in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica were dominated by oscillatory flow associated with diurnal tidal components (O1, K1, P1). Net flow was southward in the eastern Sound, mixed in the central Sound, and northward in the western Sound. Short term observations (<5 days) from nearshore stations indicated a similar but more sluggish pattern of tidal and mean flow. Hydrographic data collected during the same period indicated a similar pattern of cold water with low chlorophyll a content flowing northward from under the Ross Ice Shelf in the western Sound and denser, slightly warmer water with higher chlorophyll a content flowing southward in the eastern Sound. Previous studies have shown that productivity is higher in the eastern Sound than in the west, apparently due to the circulation pattern. The western Sound consists of waters from beneath the Ross Ice Shelf which have a lower phytoplankton standing stock than eastern Sound waters which enter from the north. More sluggish current speeds in the western Sound result in even lower particle fluxes past benthic consumers. Finally, more persistent ice cover in the west further inhibits in situ primary productivity. 相似文献

Summary Measurements of hydrographic parameters (temperature, salinity, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, chlorophyll a, phaeophytin, and oxygen) in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica during spring, 1984, before the regional phytoplankton bloom, and summer, 1984, after the peak of the bloom, indicate the several processes contribute to changes in the vertical and horizontal structure of the water column. Regional variation in the source of water masses within the Sound, ice cover patterns, and meltwater from the Ross Ice Shelf and nearby continental glaciers result in east-west and north-south gradients in the thermohaline, nutrient, and productivity characteristics of the Sound. These patterns are also related to the extremely variable structure and productivity of shallow water benthic macrofaunal communities in McMurdo Sound. Hydrographic patterns during Spring (November) were indicative of conditions at the end of winter prior to the spring phytoplankton bloom. The water column was nearly isothermal with temperatures near or below the surface freezing point of seawater with only a slight salinity increase with depth. Salinity was lower in the west Sound than in the east, probably in response to glacial meltwater input from the Ross Ice Shelf and/or terrestrial sources. Nutrient levels were high and nearly homogenous throughout the Sound. Chlorophyll a was low (<1.0 g/l) throughout most of the Sound, but was lowest in the western sound, as expected from the circulation pattern (Barry and Dayton 1988). Oxygen was uniformly low during spring. The summer hydrographic distributions, estimated from samples collected during the decline of the regional plankton bloom, were dramatically different than in during spring. Both the salinity and temperature were vertically stratified at all sites, particularly in the west Sound. Temperatures near the surface were well above the freezing point and occasionally near or above 0°C. Near surface salinity in the western Sound was nearly fresh (0.4 ppt) at some locations in the southwestern Sound. Chlorophyll a was high throughout the Sound relative to spring concentrations, and nutrient levels (NO3, PO4) were strongly depressed near the surface, due mainly to phytoplankton uptake rather than by dilution. Primary productivity estimates based on the summer nitrate and phosphate deficits over 90 days were 1.96–2.02 and 0.39–1.02 gCm-2d-1 for the east and west sound, respectively. Nutrient ratios indicated that glacial meltwater from the Ross Ice Shelf and/or nearby terrestrial sources may be an important component of the summer meltwater input to the western Sound. Enhanced water column stability due to this input may prolong the maintenance of high water column stability as this water mass flows northward and result in particularly high productivity in northern McMurdo Sound. 相似文献

Although bacteria are ubiquitous in the near-surface atmosphere and they can have important effects on human health, airborne bacteria have received relatively little attention and their spatial dynamics remain poorly understood. Owing to differences in meteorological conditions and the potential sources of airborne bacteria, we would expect the atmosphere over different land-use types to harbor distinct bacterial communities. To test this hypothesis, we sampled the near-surface atmosphere above three distinct land-use types (agricultural fields, suburban areas and forests) across northern Colorado, USA, sampling five sites per land-use type. Microbial abundances were stable across land-use types, with ∼105–106 bacterial cells per m3 of air, but the concentrations of biological ice nuclei, determined using a droplet freezing assay, were on average two and eight times higher in samples from agricultural areas than in the other two land-use types. Likewise, the composition of the airborne bacterial communities, assessed via bar-coded pyrosequencing, was significantly related to land-use type and these differences were likely driven by shifts in the sources of bacteria to the atmosphere across the land-uses, not local meteorological conditions. A meta-analysis of previously published data shows that atmospheric bacterial communities differ from those in potential source environments (leaf surfaces and soils), and we demonstrate that we may be able to use this information to determine the relative inputs of bacteria from these source environments to the atmosphere. This work furthers our understanding of bacterial diversity in the atmosphere, the terrestrial controls on this diversity and potential approaches for source tracking of airborne bacteria. 相似文献

Simultaneously with increasing afforestation efforts in western Europe, among conservationists the consciousness is growing that protecting areas to conserve biodiversity will not be sufficient in the long term, and that also the ecological restoration of more or less severely altered areas will be necessary. The probability that recently established forest stands develop towards their ecological reference (i.e. ancient forest) depends largely on the possibility of the target species to colonize them. We focused on the colonization ability of forest plant species and particularly on so-called ancient forest plant species. Major constraints for ecological forest restoration are the spatial characteristics of the target site (isolation, shape and area), imposing dispersal limitations, and in the duration and intensity of the historical land use, leading to changes in habitat characteristics influencing recruitment probability. We reviewed the ecological literature with respect to these constraints and conclude that it takes at least a century to restore the understorey layer of recent forests, even when the target stand is adjacent to a well-developed ancient forest. Both recruitment and dispersal limitation of the target species are responsible for this. Newly established forests should therefore be situated at a minimal distance of the ancient forest source. In other cases, forest plant species will not be able to colonize the newly established forest on a measurable time scale and artificial introduction of forest plant species can be taken into consideration. The negative effects of habitat characteristics, and mainly high soil nutrient values in the recent forest stand can be mitigated by soil nutrient lowering measures. Disturbances in the recent forest should be minimized to maintain a high canopy closure level, preventing light demanding, high competitive species from establishing a stable population. An additional negative consequence of soil disturbances is that it stimulates germination of species from the soil seed bank, which is mainly composed of highly competitive or ruderal species. 相似文献

Peatlands have traditionally been exploited in forestry and agriculture over the boreal region, yet they also provide substantial source of fuel production. The large-scale exploitation of peatlands has raised a concern about the diversity of mire plant communities. We studied composition of mire plant communities along soil nutrient potential and water content gradients, to recognize the areas with the high plant diversity. Soil electrical conductivity (ECb) was measured to characterise soil nutrient regimes and soil dielectric permittivity (DP) the soil (volumetric) water regimes. A total of 115 mire sites were studied in the central boreal region of south-western Finnish Lapland. We found that Ward’s hierarchical cluster analysis produced eight stable ECb and DP clusters with discrete vegetation compositions. On the basis of a locally weighted regression analysis (Loess), Carex dioica L., Comarum palustre L., Equisetum fluviatile L., Menyanthes trifoliata L., and Scorpidium scorpioides (Hedw.) Limpr. were found as indicator species for nutrient-rich regimes as designated by high soil ECb. The soil ECb is a diagnostic measure of plant diversity as ECb?>?7 mSm?1 resulted in a considerable increase in species richness. Our classification method, based on electrical measurements, provides a simple way to classify mires and focus detailed research to areas with potentially high conservation value. 相似文献

The perennial taxa ofCrucianella in Asia form a coherent group, apparently diploid (x = 11) and outbreeding throughout, and should be placed into sect.Roseae. This Irano-Turanian group has its centre of diversity in the mountain systems south of the Caspian Sea and reaches with outposts NE. and E. Anatolia, NE. Iraq, S. Iran and C. Asia. Four species and 13 subspecies (within the polymorphicC. gilanica) are recognized, described (partly as new), and illustrated (Figs. 1–6). Conspectus, keys and distribution maps (Figs. 7 and 8) as well as plesio- and apomorphic character states and data on size of areas are provided (Table 1). There is an obvious correlation between more plesiomorphic taxa with smaller areas in the distribution centre of the group, and more apomorphic taxa with larger areas towards its periphery (Fig. 9).
