Data on growth of nestling Hamerkops Scopus umbretta were analysed with respect to year and season of hatching and to hatch sequence. Quantitative growth characters included weight, culmen, tarsus, tail, third outermost primary quill, standard wing-length and wing span. The growth constant K of weight was 0·179 and time t10t90 was 21·8 days. Least-squares analyses showed differences in weight gain, culmen-length and tarsus-length related to year and month but not to sequence of hatching. Predictive equations for character against age are provided for all linear measurements. Characters which attained apparent asymptotes before fledging were weight and culmen and tarsus-length whilst other characters varied between 80 and 90% of reported adult size. Qualitative indications of growth discussed are crest development, colouration and the disappearance of the egg-tooth. The rainy and post-rains seasons appear to offer the Hamerkop the best chances of successful breeding and maximum growth rates.  相似文献

Results of a 7-yr field study and a 3-yr slaughterhouse study into reproductive performance and reproductive wastage of ruminants in central Mali are reported. Cattle had delayed age at first puberty (40), long calving intervals (644) and produced few young (3.02) per lifetime. Goats and sheep first conceived at about 11 mo, had shorter parturition intervals (298 and 280 d) but also produced few young (2.64 and 1.92) per lifetime. Conceptions showed a strong seasonality in cattle and mainly occurred during and shortly after the short rainy season. Seasonality was less marked in small ruminants, but most females conceived before the rains. However, maximum litter sizes were associated with late-rain and post-rain conceptions. Early embryonic wastage did not appear to be a major problem but abortions, stillbirths and heavy preweaning mortality were sources of loss of reproductive potential. Additionally at a secondary (government controlled) abattoir, 15.0 % of cows, 31.7 % of goats and 20.0 % of sheep that were slaughtered were found to be pregnant.  相似文献

Summary Four shrub species of the Australian Proteaceae (Hakea sericea, H. gibbosa, H. suaveolens and H. salicifolia) were introduced to South African fynbos shrublands between 1840 and 1860. H. sericea is highly invasive, H. gibbosa and H. suaveolens are moderately invasive and H. salicifolia is not invasive. The allocation of reproductive energy, germinability, the ability to survive fires and to germinate in burnt and unburnt areas, and the nutrient content of seeds were assessed for the four species. The information was used to investigate whether the success of H. sericea relative to the other three species could be explained by the superior expression of any trait. The most important trait which separates H. sericea from the other species is its ability to produce a large seed bank in its adopted environment in the absence of seed predators. Seed production in H. sericea shrubs with an above-ground dry mass of 8 kg is four times greater than H. gibbosa and more than 16 times that of H. suaveolens. Although H. salicifolia also produces a large seed bank, its seeds are unable to survive fires due to inadequate insulation by the small follicles. The results are compared to dispersal and seed bank data for indigenous South African Proteaceae, which have low dispersal and suffer high pre-dispersal seed predation. We suggest that potential invasives in the fynbos can be identified as species that have: (i) a potentially high seed production that is limited by specialized predators; (ii) an ability to disperse over long distances; and (iii) are pre-adapted to frequent fires and low soil nutrients. The data also support the current strategy of combatting H. sericea using specialized insect seed predators.  相似文献

Synopsis Aspects of the reproduction and diet of the butterflyfish,Chaetodon miliaris, were studied by examining 345 individuals collected around Oahu, Hawaiian Islands. The sex ratio of this species was uniform and annual spawning activity was periodic yet seasonally protracted, extending through the winter and spring months (January–May). No lunar influence on spawning was detected. Fecundity was quadratically related to fish weight, implying an abrupt shift in the use of energy resources at the time of maturity from growth to reproduction.Gut contents showed that calanoid copepods and other zooplankton comprised the major portion of the diet although benthic prey were commonly taken. Dietary composition varied with season, locality, and size of fish. Based upon comparisons with otherChaetodon spp. the diet ofC. miliaris appears to be relatively opportunistic.  相似文献

Breeding biology of the Barn Owl Tyto alba in central Mali   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Data were obtained on 178 clutches of African Barn Owls in central Mali from four breeding seasons during 1979–1983. Significantly more clutches were laid in 1979–1980 and significantly fewer in 1980– 1981 than the average for the 4 years and there were significantly more clutches laid in the middle period of the annual breeding season. The egg volume was significantly smaller at the beginning of the breeding season and significantly larger in the middle than the overall mean with eggs of second clutches being larger than those of first clutches. The clutch size was 605 eggs of which 479 hatched. The number of young fledged per successful nest was 319 and was 1 83 for all nesting attempts. The month was the only variable shown to affect significantly the clutch size, eggs hatched and fledging rate, the highest success rates being associated with the middle of the breeding period. The average interval between the hatching of eggs was 2–31 days. Survival rates (47'1%) to fledging were significantly affected by year (1981–1982 being the least) and month (mid-season birds the best). The order of hatching significantly affected age at death or disappearance, the first-hatched birds surviving the longest. The year significantly affected age at fledging, the young from the year in which most clutches were laid leaving the nest at the youngest age and those associated with the year having the least number of clutches remaining in the nest the longest. The month of hatching also affected fledging age, birds at the extremes of the breeding season fledging at older ages. The discussion compares these data with those from elsewhere.  相似文献

近年来苔藓植物生殖生态学研究主要集中于繁育系统、生殖代价与对策,以及不同生殖方式对种群遗传变异的影响等方面。生殖结构的原始性及其对水分的独特需求,以及雌雄异株比例较高等导致苔藓植物中有性生殖比例偏低;雌配子体很少完成整个有性生殖过程,其“真实的生殖代价”主要指雌性性表达(雌配子发生)的能耗,并且显著低于雄性性表达;基于对资源有效分配的生殖对策而导致雌性偏向及部分孢子体败育。无性生殖有利于不同生境条件下有效种群的发展与维持,其多样化的繁殖方式导致复杂的种群动态。苔藓植物具有较高的种群遗传多样性,生殖方式与种群遗传变异无直接因果关系,孢子与无性繁殖体不同的散布能力对于种群间遗传分化具有一定的影响。  相似文献

This paper attempts to integrate the physiological and ecological perspectives of the reproductive biology of the house mouse (Mus musculus). The endeavor is made within a larger context to provide a prototype for mammalian reproductive ecology in general. Specifically, the environmental regulation of the reproduction of Mus musculus is examined in relation to its ecological opportunism and, in particular, in relation to its history of global colonization. House mice can live as commensals of man or under totally feral conditions. Stable, high density, commensal populations are characterized by an insular division of the living space into demeterritories, each dominated by a single male. Feral populations typically are characterized by temporal, spatial, and social instability. Territoriality is improbable under such conditions, particularly given the necessity for large home ranges in most feral habitats. In both feral and commensal populations, however, male aggressiveness promotes the large-scale dispersal of young, all of which are potential colonizers. Of the ten or so environmental factors known to influence reproduction in house mice, seven probably are of routine importance in natural populations: diurnal modulation by daily light:dark cycles; caloric intake; nutrition; extreme temperature; agaonistic stimuli; socio-tactile cues; and priming pheronomes. The last two factors named operate directly on the secretion of luteinizing hormone or prolactin; the others act at many points in the reproductive system. Reproduction in the house mouse seems divorced from photoperiodically induced seasonality; indeed, this species breeds well even in constant darkness. Seasonal breeding may or may not then occur, depending upon dietary considerations, with or without a secondary interaction with variation in ambient temperature. There is no evidence for a dependence upon secondary plant compounds. Some of the effects of priming pheromones that have been observed previously in laboratory mice probably play no meaningful role in wild populations. The remaining pheromonal phenomena can be conceptualized as a single cueing system that has three components: (a) urinary cues of socially dominant males can accelerate ovulation in females, adult or prepubertal; (b) female urinary cues may elevate pheromonal potency in adult males, thereby forming a feedback loop by which the females elicit their own ovulation; and (c) the male's action on prepubertal females can be blocked by urinary cues emanating from other females. When all of the above is viewed in toto, the reproductive biology of the house mouse seems uniquely suited to support ecological opportunism. Aim We provide a new quantitative analysis of lizard reproductive ecology. Comparative studies of lizard reproduction to date have usually considered life‐history components separately. Instead, we examine the rate of production (productivity hereafter) calculated as the total mass of offspring produced in a year. We test whether productivity is influenced by proxies of adult mortality rates such as insularity and fossorial habits, by measures of temperature such as environmental and body temperatures, mode of reproduction and activity times, and by environmental productivity and diet. We further examine whether low productivity is linked to high extinction risk. Location World‐wide. Methods We assembled a database containing 551 lizard species, their phylogenetic relationships and multiple life history and ecological variables from the literature. We use phylogenetically informed statistical models to estimate the factors related to lizard productivity. Results Some, but not all, predictions of metabolic and life‐history theories are supported. When analysed separately, clutch size, relative clutch mass and brood frequency are poorly correlated with body mass, but their product – productivity – is well correlated with mass. The allometry of productivity scales similarly to metabolic rate, suggesting that a constant fraction of assimilated energy is allocated to production irrespective of body size. Island species were less productive than continental species. Mass‐specific productivity was positively correlated with environmental temperature, but not with body temperature. Viviparous lizards were less productive than egg‐laying species. Diet and primary productivity were not associated with productivity in any model. Other effects, including lower productivity of fossorial, nocturnal and active foraging species were confounded with phylogeny. Productivity was not lower in species at risk of extinction. Main conclusions Our analyses show the value of focusing on the rate of annual biomass production (productivity), and generally supported associations between productivity and environmental temperature, factors that affect mortality and the number of broods a lizard can produce in a year, but not with measures of body temperature, environmental productivity or diet.  相似文献

The reproductive ecology of Mohave rattlesnakes Crotalus scutulatus was investigated in the western Mohave Desert using radiotelemetry from August 2001 to November 2004. This paper documents reproductive behavior across successive seasons in the context of seasonal timing, mean daily movement, home range, body temperature and relationship with abiotic factors such as time of day, temperature, precipitation, photoperiod and microhabitat. This population of C. scutulatus used a bimodal mating system, with reproductive behavior occurring in late summer/fall (21 August to 7 October), interrupted by 4 months of cold weather, and concluding in the spring (16 March to 16 May). Drought apparently curtailed courtship and copulation during the 2002 activity season, but the pregnancy rates in 2002 and 2003 were not significantly affected. Communal denning was not detected and there was no indication of seasonal migration. Autumnal and vernal movements appeared to be driven by reproductive effort, predominantly males engaged in prolonged mate searching. Sexual maturity was achieved at 2.0 years/600 mm snout–vent length (SVL) for females, and 1.5 years/400 mm SVL for males.  相似文献

Data on growth of 276 young Barn Owls were analysed with respect to the effects of year and month of hatching, hatch order and brood order. Growth characteristics considered were weight; lengths of culmen, tarsus, central tail feathers and quill of third outermost primary; standard wing length; and wing span. For weight the growth constant K was 0151 and time t 10- t 90 was 32-2 days. Least-squares analyses showed that gain in weight and culmen and tarsus length were affected by month of hatching with young hatched in the middle part of the breeding season showing the most rapid growth. Hatch order affected gain in weight. Differences in growth rates of all these characters were not, however, reflected in differences in weight or length at fledging except for the effects of brood on weight with second broods fledging at significantly lighter weights than first ones. Predictive equations for character against age are provided for all linear measurements. 发现模式,并根据过程解释模式,是科学研究的主要目标.在植物繁殖生态学领域内,人们已经总结了一些重要的模式,包括普遍的雌雄同体、分离的花果期、较低的结实率、大量的同时开花、胁迫生境更易出现的异交、生活史性状与交配系统的相互作用、花序内的花分化,以及花内的雄蕊分化(异型雄蕊)等.对这些模式如何从机理上予以解释,还需要植物繁殖生态学家的艰苦努力.本文着重强调了植物许多重要繁殖特征都可以通过植株、花序以及花各层次上的资源分配而得到很好的解释,尤其是可以在很大程度上协调其他不同侧重点研究得到的矛盾结论.在今后逐渐强调多因素、多尺度对花部特征与传粉系统的适应与进化的研究中,从直接决定花部特征与交配系统的资源分配出发,将是促进人们准确理解与预测花部特征适应与进化的一个重要研究方向.  相似文献

In the central region of the Great Barrier Reef, Acanthaster planci eats its own disk area of coral each day. At the southern end of the reef lagoon populations of A. planci eat substantially less than this amount of coral per day. Branching and plate corals are preferred food species and massive and encrusting forms are rejected while the preferred food species are available. Only when branching and plate forms on a reef have been consumed will A. planci attack massive and encrusting species. On Australian reefs preferred food species form between 70–99% of the coral cover.
On the Great Barrier Reef A. planci spawns in January and juveniles settle in the top 3 m of water on the windward edge of reefs or on isolated patch reefs behind the main reef. Intolerance of wave attack forces the growing starfish to migrate into deeper water. Lateral movements, probably induced by shortage of living coral in deep water, bring the starfish around the ends of the reef to the leeward side. Here they destroy most of the living coral.
It is suggested that the visual impact of A. planci on reefs of the Indo-Pacific region is related to the composition of the coral fauna. Reefs with a high proportion of preferred food species will be severely damaged while those with faunas composed mainly of massive and encrusting forms will not be altered greatly by starfish predation.
Work on larval development of A. planci carried out by Henderson & Lucas, 1971 showed that metamorphosis took place only at water temperatures of 28o -29o C. This suggests that the A. planci plague on the Great Barrier Reef will not spread south of latitude 20o S (29o C isotherm in January).  相似文献

由于研究技术与方法的不断改进 ,人们对海藻 (seaweeds)早期生活史方面的研究兴趣日益增大。评述了近年来海藻有性繁殖过程中配子释放和受精生态学问题。到达一定生理状态的海藻 ,通过对环境暗示应答而诱导配子形成。海藻生殖器官感受另一些特定的环境条件 ,通过有关信号传递机制 ,触发配子释放。海藻配子释放的时间及其所需的环境条件 ,依不同的种类而变化。配子同步释放以及各种适当的环境条件提高了受精频率和受精成功率 ,有利于受精的各种生物的和非生物的因素组合 ,形成了“机会窗 (the window of opportunity)”的概念。近年来的研究表明 ,海藻 (特别是红藻 )的自然受精成功率比以前所认为的要高得多。受精后合子 (胚 )的散布、集落与附着显著地影响其生存以及种群动态。对今后值得进一步研究的方面作了展望  相似文献

Results of semi-quantitative observations and quantitative sampling of seagrasses at coastal and offshore sites along the western Arabian Gulf are presented. Overall seagrass cover (all species together) shows significant positive correlation with latitude, but not with salinity, temperature or depth. The same pattern is shown by Halodule uninervis (Forsk.) Aschers., the dominant species. Mean seagrass biomass ranged from 53–235 g m-2 (dry weight). These values are comparable with biomass estimates from regions in which environmental conditions are generally less extreme than in the Gulf. Seagrass biomass is significantly negatively correlated with depth and sediment grain size. No significant correlation is apparent between seagrass biomass and factors such as season, salinity, or concentrations of nutrients and heavy metals measured. It is pointed out that any correlations observed are not necessarily taken to imply causality.  相似文献
