News from the BSC No. 8

Abstract

In the 8th and following issues of News from the Biological Stain Commission (BSC), under the heading of Regulatory affairs, the BSC's International Affairs Committee will present information from a meeting held in Ghent, Belgium on 15–18 June 2009 concerning the progress achieved by the International Standards Organization Committee ISO/TC 212 Clinical Laboratory Testing and in Vitro Diagnostic Test Systems since the last meeting held in Vancouver, Canada in 2008. A note on the meaning and significance of E numbers found on the labels of foodstuffs and beverages sold for human consumption concludes this edition of News from the Biological Stain Commission.     

Orcein,a traditional stain revealed: some introductory remarks

In the three earlier editions of News from the Biological Stain Commission (BSC), under the heading of “Regulatory affairs,” the BSC's International Affairs Committee reported on the work of Technical Committee 212, Clinical Laboratory Testing and in Vitro Diagnostic Test Systems of the International Standards Organization (ISO/TC 212) and its working groups, WG 1, WG 2 and WG 3. In this issue of News from the BSC, H.O. Lyon provides information from the annual meeting of ISO/TC 212 that took place June 2–4, 2008 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In addition, under the heading of “Certification,” J.A. Kiernan examines the certification procedure for thionine used by the BSC laboratory in Rochester, NY.

In this issue of News from the Biological Stain Commission (BSC), under the heading of Regulatory affairs, HO Lyon of the BSC's International Affairs Committee presents information from a joint meeting held in Berlin by the International Standards Organization ISO/TC 212/WG 2 and the European Committee for Standardization CEN/TC 140/WG 4 on 9–10 December 2008. As a slightly less bureaucratic contribution, RW Horobin presents some news about tartrazine, a dye used as a biological stain, but very much more widely as a food color.

Abstract

In this issue of News from the Biological Stain Commission (BSC), under the heading of Regulatory affairs, the Biological Stain Commission's International Affairs Committee presents information from a meeting held in Berlin by the International Standards Organization ISO/TC 212/WG 1, “Quality and Competence in the Medical Laboratory,” on 11–12 December 2008. After this, we turn again to problems with impure dyes and find that solvent dyes are impure even for non-biological use.

第二届生态系统评估与管理(EAM)国际会议综述

自2005年联合国《千年生态系统评估》发布以来,旱区农业生态系统评估与管理研究越来越受到世界各国的广泛关注和重视。综述了2010年7月19日至25日在兰州大学举行的第二届生态系统评估与管理(Ecosystem assessment and management, EAM)国际会议28场特邀专家报告,围绕"气候变化与旱区农业生态系统管理"主题,分别从生态系统时空格局、全球变化生态学、植物逆境适应机制、植物与土壤关系和生态系统管理五个方面进行总结,旨在探讨全球气候变化条件下如何提高干旱与半干旱脆弱农业生态系统生产力和可持续性发展的创新理论研究。对生态系统评估与管理的未来发展趋势和目标进行了探讨,并对该会议将来的举办和组织形式提出了建议。

The XVIIIth International Congress of Psychology has been organized by the Society of Psychologists of the USSR, under the auspices of the International Union of Scientific Psychology and the Soviet Steering Committee, under the chairmanship of P. N. Fedosseyev. The Steering Committee was established by the USSR Ministry of Higher Education, the USSR Academy of Sciences, and the RSFSR Ministry of Education. The President of the Congress is A. N. Leont'yev. The Organizing Committee of the Congress is chaired by A. A. Smirnov; and the Program Committee is chaired by A. R. Luriya, with the assistance of P. Fraisse (Paris), acting on behalf of the International Union of Scientific Psychology.

Teratology Public Affairs Committee position paper: maternal obesity and pregnancy

Compared to normal-weight women, obese women have an increased risk of infertility and pregnancy complications. The most consistently described pregnancy complications are hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes mellitus, thromboembolic events, and cesarean section. Fetal and neonatal complications may include congenital malformations, macrosomia, and shoulder dystocia. The literature suggests that women with a body mass index (BMI) >or=30 have approximately double the risk of having a child with a neural tube defect (NTD) compared to normal-weight women, and the increased risk associated with higher maternal body weight does not appear to be modified by folic acid supplementation. The Public Affairs Committee of the Teratology Society supports the public health initiatives identified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2004 and the research initiatives identified by the National Institutes of Health in 2004. The Public Affairs Committee recommends that clinicians counsel women about appropriate caloric intake and exercise and that health-care providers educate parents about appropriate childhood nutrition. Breast-feeding should be encouraged based on evidence of a protective effect against childhood obesity, as well as other health advantages.     

Issues on diversity, training, and mentorship of young scientists: an interview

Academic institutions across the country have long recognized the value of racial integration and have consistently opposed legal challenges to affirmative action policies. Despite these efforts, the percentage of underrepresented minorities in academic positions has not increased in proportion to their representation in society. Recruitment of underrepresented minorities into scientific and academic careers is important, because these individuals provide valuable contributions to research and teaching, and they serve as positive role models to others aspiring to such professions. In this interview, Renato Aguilera, Chair of the ASCB Minorities Affairs Committee, answers questions from MBoC Features Editor Doug Kellogg about diversity in the scientific workforce.     

The international defence of racial equality

Since 1945 there has been built a detailed code of international law defining the rights of individuals against the states that exercise power over them. In 1965 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination [ICERD]. The Committee charged with implementing the Convention, though sometimes limited by differences of approach and definition among members from various countries, has achieved various successes under the headings of standard‐setting, education and institution‐building. The Committee has now established a satisfactory system of reporting but it still operates under a series of constraints, including a lack of independent fact‐finding powers. Yet, despite these limitations, the Committee has, by its influence upon states, contributed significantly to the international fight against racial discrimination.
