This article analyses the ideological uses of formal education in a community of Chamars (former 'Untouchables' or Dalits) in northern India. In particular, it focuses on the ways it is deployed for self- and community improvement. Education is especially needed to forge an alternative to the inherited, essentialized, and derogatory Chamar identity. Furthermore, recent anti-establishment political mobilization amongst the low castes in northern India has provided new impetus for accelerating identity change. In order to grasp the nature and extent of Chamar social transformation, I explore notions of the past, aspects of ritual, and folk theories of socialization. Drawing from these, an underlying protean self and community substance emerges in which the remaking of the present is tied to the remaking of the past. Against this backdrop, I show the contradictory nature of the effects of education. On the one hand, there is the constructed and shared 'educated' substance which acts as a unifying force amongst the Chamars vis-à-vis outsiders. On the other, education as an individualizing experience and related processes of upward mobility fragment the community body politic, leaving the 'liberating' effect of education embedded in the production of new inequalities.  相似文献

On n = 320 nonrelated Kureel Chamars (160 males, 160 females) from Lucknow and neighbouring villages and n = 314 nonrelated Jaiswar Chamars (160 males, 154 females) from Jaunpur the frequency of colourvision deficiency was examined. In the Kureel Chamars the frequency of deuteranopia comes to a total of 1.25% (males: 25%, females: 0.0%), in the Jaiswar Chamars to a total of 1.91% (males: 3.13%, females: 0.65%). Protanopes were only found in the Kureel Chamars (0.63%; males: 1.25%, females: 0.0%). These observations are discussed and compared with those obtained on other Indian populations.  相似文献

Four-hundred fifty-nine people, including 106 Santals, 43 Bhuiyas, 107 Sakaldipi Brahmins, 108 Chamars, and 95 Ansari Muslims, of the Giridhi district of Bihar have been tested for transferrin, group-specific component, phosphoglucomutase subtypes, and glyoxalase-I, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, and adenylate kinase types. Genetic distance estimates by both dendrogram and principal component methods for these 5 populations and the Oraons on the basis of 19 alleles at 6 polymorphic loci indicate 2 major clusters: Brahmins and Muslims, the latter of which is composed of two subclusters (Santals and Bhuiyas, and Oraons and Chamars). The Santal and Bhuiya tribes both speak Mundari, whereas the Oraons speak a Dravidian language. The Chamars, although low-caste Hindus, seem to have a non-Europoid origin, as do the Oraons.  相似文献

Environmental pollution and consumption of alcohol evoke various immunomodulations promoting the progress of different pathologies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of alcohol consumption intensity on the immune system functions of humans living in ecologically different regions, i.e. in a district polluted with industrial siftings (Trakai, n = 270) and in a relatively clean district (Sirvintos, n = 250). In the Trakai cohort 96% and in Sirvintos group 89% of persons consumed alcohol. With regard to alcohol consumption habits the immunohaematological indices were investigated in the following four groups: abstinents, light alcohol users, moderate alcohol users and alcohol abusers. We determined the compensatory mechanisms of immune system functions of moderate alcohol users and alcohol abusers in comparison with abstinents in the relatively clean Sirvintos district. In the Trakai district polluted with industrial siftings such compensatory reactions where not found. Thus, damage to the immune system functions is not only an endogenous risk factor for many diseases, but also an indicator of organism injury. This investigation stated, that immunity disturbance in humans depends on alcohol consumption intensity and place of residence.  相似文献

Whether the gut alterations seen during sepsis are caused by microcirculatory hypoxia or disturbances in cellular metabolic pathways associated with mitochondrial respiration remains controversial. We hypothesized that hypoperfusion or hypoxia and local production of nitric oxide might play an important role in the development of gut mucosal injury during endotoxic shock and investigated their roles by using differing levels of fluid resuscitation and occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA). Anesthetized New Zealand rabbits were allocated to group I (sham, n = 8); group II [low-dose endotoxin (LPS, Escherichia coli-055:B5, 150 microg/kg)/fluid resuscitation (12 ml x kg(-1) x h(-1)); n = 8]; group III [high-dose LPS (1 mg/kg)/fluid resuscitation (12 ml x kg(-1) x h(-1)); n = 8]; group IV [high-dose LPS (1 mg/kg)/hypovolemia (4 ml x kg-1 x h(-1) fluids); n = 8]; and group V [SMA ligation/fluid resuscitation (12 ml x kg(-1) x h(-1)); n = 4]. Luminal gut lactate concentrations and PCO2 gap increased in groups IV and V (P < 0.05), reflecting alterations in gut perfusion. Interestingly, significant histological alterations were observed in all LPS groups but not in group V. Blood and luminal gut nitrate/nitrite concentrations increased only in group IV. The mechanism of gut injury in endotoxic shock seems unrelated to hypoxia and release of nitric oxide. Gut dysfunction may occur as a result of so-called "cytopathic hypoxia."  相似文献

To understand fetal membrane retention in dairy cattle, we examined these tissues in the immediate peripartum period before tissue separation. Placentomes were collected at 270-280 d of gestation from pre-partum Holstein cows (n = 5) and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 h postpartum from a) cows releasing fetal membranes in less than 12 h (n = 7), b) cows retaining fetal membranes for more than 12 h (n = 5), and c) cows induced to calve with dexamethasone (releasing membranes in more than 12 h; n = 5). Subjective evaluations of necrosis, distribution, and condition of binucleate giant and of principal cells were made. Necrotic foci and binucleate giant cells were counted for each interval for which tissue was available. Necrosis, existing prepartum, was identical to that observed at 1 h postpartum in all treatment groups (P > 0.05). Necrosis gradually increased in all treatment groups with time (P < 0.05); thus necrosis is unrelated to initiation of calving and is indirectly related to fetal membrane retention. Many binucleate giant cells were observed prepartum. In cows releasing fetal membranes normally, a significant (P < 0.05) decline in these cell numbers had occurred by 1 h postpartum. When fetal membrane retention occurred, no such decrease in binucleate giant cells was observed before 12 h postpartum. Loss of binucleate giant cells appears necessary for, or must occur with, separation of fetal membranes.  相似文献

In 207 consecutive patients the outcome of bleeding varices was compared in those aged under 65 (n = 146) and those aged over 65 (n = 61). All patients were seen during seven years and were treated by active initial and maintenance sclerotherapy. Alcoholic cirrhosis was commoner in younger patients (68 (47%) v 12 (20%] and cryptogenic cirrhosis commoner in older patients (21 (34%) v 19 (13%]. Mortality due to the first bleed was dependent on the severity of liver disease and was unrelated to age. Survival corrected for age (life table analysis) was 65% at one year and 60% at two years for both groups of patients. It is concluded that patients should not be denied active treatment for bleeding varices on the basis of age alone. In order to obtain optimum results early endoscopy and sclerotherapy is essential.  相似文献

We report on the construction of sex-specific high-density linkage maps and identification of sex-linked markers for the black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon). Overall, we identified 44 male and 43 female linkage groups (2n = 88) from the analysis of 2,306 AFLP markers segregating in three full-sib families, covering 2,378 and 2,362 cM, respectively. Twenty-one putatively homologous linkage groups, including the sex-linkage groups, were identified between the female and male linkage maps. Six sex-linked AFLP marker alleles were inherited from female parents in the three families, suggesting that the P. monodon adopts a WZ-ZZ sex-determining system. Two sex-linked AFLP markers, one of which we converted into an allele-specific assay, confirmed their association with sex in a panel of 52 genetically unrelated animals.  相似文献

Eight new species of the genus Ptilonyssus (Berl. et Troues.) (Gamasina: Rhinonyssidae) from nasal cavities of the passeriformes from territory of the former USSR are described: P. ammomani sp. n. from Ammomanus deserti (Alaudidae) collected in Turkmenistan; P. spini sp. n. from Spinus spinus (Fringillidae) of Kaliningrad district (Russia); P. ripariae sp. n. from Riparia riparia (Hirundinidae) and P. acanthopneustes sp. n. from Phylloscopus borealis (Sylviidae) collected in Tjumen district (Russia); P. pyrrhulinus sp. n. from Pyrrhula pyrrhula (Fringillidae) and P. anthi sp. n. from Anthus trivialis (Motacillidae) of Rjazan district; P. sylviicola sp. n. from Sylviae communis (Sylviidae) collected in Tatarstan; P. cyanosylviae sp. n. from Cyanosylvia svecica (Turdidae) collected from Novosibirsk district.  相似文献

In 2004, an outbreak of kala-azar (KA) occurred for the first time in Libo Kemkem district, in the highland area of northwest Ethiopia. In order to track the possible origins of the outbreak parasites, we have investigated 19 strains of Leishmania donovani that were collected during (n = 6) and after (n = 13) the outbreak by using 14 highly polymorphic microsatellite markers. Unique microsatellite profiles were obtained for all strains from Libo Kemkem. When compared to those of L. donovani strains from different Ethiopian, Kenyan and Sudanese foci, by genetic distance and Bayesian clustering model analyses, most strains from Libo Kemkem grouped with strains from: (i) Humera and Metema in the lowlands and Belessa in the highland of Ethiopia, and (ii) Sudan, at different hierarchal levels. The strains from Libo Kemkem district were assigned at least to three genetically distinct clusters (A, B1 and B2) of which only one, cluster B2, consisted exclusively of strains from Libo Kemkem. The fact that most of the outbreak strains were found to be related to strains from well-known KA foci in northwest Ethiopia and Sudan might suggest multiple introductions of L. donovani strains from these foci into Libo Kemkem district.  相似文献

The first cytogenetic studies of the Turkmenian kulan, Equus hemionus kulan, are reported, and a polymorphism in diploid chromosome number is described. Chromosome fusion is apparently involved in the alterations of the karyotype of E. hemionus kulan (2n = 55, 54) when compared to the karyotype of the onager, E. hemionus onager (2n = 56). Additionally, the rearrangement involved has been identified in animals unrelated through captive breeding; inheritance of the fusion chromosomes has also been observed.  相似文献

Population genetic characteristics were estimated in the Alatyr' raion (administrative district) of the Republic of Chuvashia, which has long been populated by three ethnic groups. The ethnic assortativeness values in the town of Alatyr' and the rural area of the district were 1.17 and 1.21, respectively, for Russians; 1.14 and 4.82, respectively, for Chuvashes; and 1.33 and 2.45, respectively, for Mordovians. Wright's statistics were as follows: Fst = 0.00358, Fit = 0.00178, and Fis = 0.00134. The migration indices were 0.0264 for Alatyr' and 0.0178 for the district. The endogamy indices for the total and the Russian populations of Alatyr' were 0.47 and 0.53, respectively. The parameters of isolation by distance were a = 0.000189 and b = 0.00959 for the urban and a = 0.000318 and b = 0.00919 for the rural area. Schemes of the genetic landscape were constructed. The influence of the polyethnic composition on the genetic structure of the population is discussed.  相似文献

Genetically mediated taste responsiveness to 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) has been linked to reduced acceptance of some bitter foods. In this community-based study male (n = 364) and female (n = 378) adults enrolled in a self-help dietary intervention trial were screened for PROP taster status. Respondents, aged 18--70 years, were mailed filter papers impregnated with PROP or with aspartame solutions. They received instructions to rate taste intensity and hedonic preference using nine point category scales. Women rated PROP as more bitter than did men. Both sweetness and bitterness ratings were lower for older adults. Taste responsiveness to PROP was unrelated to body mass index in women or men. Higher bitterness ratings for PROP were weakly associated with higher sweetness ratings for aspartame, but were unrelated to sweet taste preferences. Successful administration of PROP filter papers by mail suggests new avenues for the screening of taste phenotypes in epidemiological studies.  相似文献

The effects of biosynthetic methionyl human growth hormone (met-hGH) on body composition and endogenous secretion of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) were studied in obese women ranging between 138 and 226% of ideal body weight. Following double-blind procedures, 12 subjects were assigned at random to either treatment with met-hGH (n = 6, 0.08 mg/kg desirable body weight) or placebo (n = 6, bacteriostatic water diluent). Treatments were delivered intramuscularly three times per week for a period of 27-28 days. Subjects were instructed to follow a weight-maintaining diet and their pre- and posttreatment kilocaloric intake was monitored for verification. The baseline peak serum GH response to L-dopa/arginine stimulation for the study population as a whole, was in the hyposecretory range (9.6 +/- 1.9 ng/ml), accompanied by a low level of circulating IGF-I (0.56 +/- 0.09 U/ml). Hydrodensitometry revealed that the met-hGH-treated subjects had a significant reduction in body fat, while an observed mean increase in fat-free mass (FFM) approached significance. The percent change in body fat was unrelated to pretreatment levels of body fat, total body weight, or initial endogenous GH status. Changes in circulating IGF-I were similar to those for FFM, with increases approaching significance. There were no significant changes in body composition or IGF-I in the placebo-treated subjects. No significant differences were observed in the self-reported dietary intake of kilocalories during the experimental period between the two groups. We conclude that exogenous GH reduces body fat in obese women in the apparent absence of significant kilocaloric restriction. The effect appears to be unrelated to endogenous GH secretion or body composition.  相似文献

Demographic data were collected from 185 sedentary Oraon of Gumla district of Bihar, 255 migrant Oraon, and 242 migrant Tamang households, covering a total population of 1009, 1414, and 1537 individuals, respectively. Both migrant groups were tea garden laborers working in the Birpara, Lankapara, and Tulsipara tea gardens in the Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal, India. The present study reveals that the migrant Oraon possess significantly higher fertility and (infant) mortality than the sedentary Oraons even though they are a genetically similar group. The study also reveals that the two migrant groups differ with respect to both fertility and mortality even though they inhabit similar physical and sociocultural environments.  相似文献

Background. Bismuth is widely used for the eradication of H. pylori , especially in developing countries, although there are concerns over its neurotoxicity. Whether bismuth has to be absorbed in humans to act against H. pylori is not known. In this study, we compared "absorbable" (colloidal bismuth subcitrate) and "nonabsorbable" (bismuth subnitrate) bismuth as part of triple therapy in the eradication of H. pylori.
Materials and Methods. A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial was carried out with 120 H. pylori –positive patients with nonulcer dyspepsia. Group CBS + Ab (n = 35) received colloidal bismuth subcitrate (one tablet qds), amoxicillin (500 mg qds), and metronidazole (400 mg tds). Group BSN + Ab (n = 35) received bismuth subnitrate (two tablets tds) and the same antibiotics. Group Ab (n = 35) received placebo bismuth (two tablets tds) and the antibiotics. Group BSN (n = 15) received bismuth subnitrate (two tablets tds) and placebo antibiotics. Bismuth was taken for 4 weeks and the antibiotics for the first 2 weeks. H. pylori eradication, side effects, compliance, pre- and post-treatment symptom scores, and bismuth absorption were assessed.
Results. H. pylori eradication was 69%, 83%, 31%, and 0% in CBS + Ab, BSN + Ab, Ab, and BSN, respectively. Side effects, compliance, and symptom relief were similar in all groups, but blood bismuth levels were significantly greater in CBS + Ab than the other three groups.
Conclusion. The efficacy of bismuth-based therapies as part of triple therapy in the eradication of H. pylori is unrelated to absorption. Hence, the use of effective but poorly absorbed bismuth preparations should be encouraged for bismuth-based eradication therapies.  相似文献

Species identification of Taenia tapeworms was performed using morphologic observations and multiplex PCR and DNA sequencing of the mitochondrial cox1 gene. In 2008 and 2009, a total of 1,057 fecal samples were collected from residents of Kongwa district of Dodoma region, Tanzania, and examined microscopically for helminth eggs and proglottids. Of these, 4 Taenia egg positive cases were identified, and the eggs were subjected to DNA analysis. Several proglottids of Taenia solium were recovered from 1 of the 4 cases. This established that the species were T. solium (n = 1) and T. saginata (n = 3). One further T. solium specimen was found among 128 fecal samples collected from Mbulu district in Arusha, and this had an intact strobila with the scolex. Phylegenetic analysis of the mtDNA cox1 gene sequences of these 5 isolates showed that T. saginata was basal to the T. solium clade. The mitochondrial cox1 gene sequences of 3 of these Tanzanian isolates showed 99% similarity to T. saginata, and the other 2 isolates showed 100% similarity to T. solium. The present study has shown that Taenia tapeworms are endemic in Kongwa district of Tanzania, as well as in a previously identified Mbulu district. The physicochemical characteristics of solubilized crosslinked CRF receptor-ligand complexes were studied in the anterior and intermediate pituitary lobes and brain of the rat. In all tissues studied, there was a major labeled band with a molecular weight of 72 +2- 3.5 kDa, (n = 15), 71 +/- 1.3 (n = 6), 73 +2- 2.5 (n = 7) and 75 +2- 3.5 (n = 7) kDa in the anterior and intermediate lobes of the pituitary, amygdala and cerebral cortex, respectively. The density of this band was inhibited by CRF analogs, but not by unrelated peptides. This is consistent with the comparable binding properties of CRF in membrane preparations of these tissues. These results suggest that differences in receptor regulation and the reported ability of CRF to stimulate cAMP is due to differences in ligand receptor processing and coupling to membrane transduction systems, rather than to major differences in the binding protein.  相似文献

The behavior of Heterolepidoderma sp. was studied with the same approach as those already used for many species of ciliates. The ethogram we drew comprehends both helicoidal swimming (n = 20, r = 52.5 +/-12.2 mum, pitch = 512 +/- 101 mum, v--> = 215 +/- 43 mum/sec), periodically interrupted by irregular patterns changing the direction of the swimming of random angles and creeping on the substrate. The latter behavioral state, very common for the species we studied, occurs along tracks formed by successive elements (circular, C, vs linear segments, S) joined to each other by two kinds of reactions, which change their trajectory. The surprising similarities and the unexpected differences between the behavior of this gastrotrich and those of the ciliates already studied from this point of view are discussed, on the basis of the dimensional ranges and ecological niches shared by these two, definitely unrelated groups of organisms.  相似文献
