The relationship between detection threshold of inspiratory resistive loads and the peaks of the respiratory-related evoked potential (RREP) is unknown. It was hypothesized that the short-latency and long-latency peaks of the RREP would only be elicited by inspiratory loads that exceeded the detection threshold. The detection threshold for inspiratory resistive loads was measured in healthy subjects with inspiratory-interruption or onset load presentations. In a separate protocol, the RREPs were recorded with resistive loads that spanned the detection threshold. The loads were presented in stimulus attend and ignore sessions. Onset and interruption load presentations had the same resistive load detection threshold. The P(1), N(f), and N(1) peaks of the RREP were observed with loads that exceeded the detection threshold in both attend and ignore conditions. The P(300) was present with loads that exceeded the detection threshold only in the attend condition. No RREP components were elicited with subthreshold loads. The P(1), N(f), and P(300) amplitudes varied with resistive load magnitude. The results support the hypothesis that there is a resistive load threshold for eliciting the RREPs. The amplitude of the RREP peaks vary as a function of load magnitude. The cognitive P(300) RREP peak is present only for detectable loads and when the subject attends to the stimulus. The absence of the RREP with loads below the detection threshold and the presence of the RREP elicited by suprathreshold loads are consistent with the gating of these neural measures of respiratory mechanosensory information processing. 相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate the reflection of psychoemotional stress in the body surface potential distribution as documented by isointegral maps of cardiac activation and recovery. In 72 young men (18.3+/- 7.3 y.) with no cardiovascular history body surface potential maps (BSPMs) at rest and during the test of mental arithmetic were recorded. The digitalized data for each point of the QRS, STT and QRST integral maps, for each subject in both situations, were processed and evaluated by methods of univariate as well as spatial mathematical and statistical modeling. The results showed during MA a significant decrease of repolarization integral values over the sternum and right precordium, which contributed to analogically localized decrements also in the QRST BSM. The decrease occurred in more than 2/3 of lead points. The most pronounced changes were observed in the right precordial area, where potentials decreased in more than in 70 % of subjects. In conclusion, the discriminative power of the difference STT and QRST integral maps was strong enough to distinguish the mental arithmetic induced changes in the superficial cardiac electric field. These adrenergic transient alterations in ventricular recovery may be of importance in subjects at risk for ventricular arrhythmias. 相似文献

The effect of increased respiratory resistance (stenosis of the trachea) on glycogen and triglyceride levels in the diaphragm (D) and intercostal (external-IE, internal-II) muscles was studied in the rat. Tracheal stenosis resulted in a reduction of glycogen level in the muscles. For the fed rats the reductions were: D-45 and 79%, IE-14 and 30%, II-14 and 35%, 0.5 and 3 h after stenosis, respectively. For rats fasted for 24 h the reductions were: D-64 and 86%, IE-33 and 71%, II-40 and 82%, after 0.5 and 3 h respectively. The level of triglycerides in the muscles was stable during stenosis in the fed group, whereas in the fasted group it were reduced in the diaphragm by 50% after 0.5 h, and by 52% after 3 h. It is concluded that both endogenous and blood-born energy fuels are utilized by the respiratory muscles during increased resistance breathing. 相似文献

Inspiratory load compensation is impaired in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition characterized by hypoxia during sleep. We sought to compare the effects of sustained hypoxia on ventilation during inspiratory resistive loading in OSA patients and matched controls. Ten OSA patients and 10 controls received 30 min of isocapnic hypoxia (arterial oxygen saturation 80%) and normoxia in random order. Following the gas period, subjects were administered six incremental 2-min inspiratory resistive loads while breathing room air. Ventilation was measured throughout the loading period. In both patients and controls, there was a significant increase in inspiratory time with increasing load (P = 0.006 and 0.003, respectively), accompanied by a significant fall in peak inspiratory flow (P = 0.006 and P < 0.001, respectively). The result was a significant fall in minute ventilation in both groups with increasing load (P = 0.003 and P < 0.001, respectively). There was no difference between the two groups for these parameters. The only difference between the two groups was a transient increase in tidal volume in controls (P = 0.02) but not in OSA patients (P = 0.57) during loading. Following hypoxia, there was a significant increase in minute ventilation during loading in both groups (P < 0.001). These results suggest that ventilation during incremental resistive loading is preserved in OSA patients and that it appears relatively impervious to the effects of hypoxia. 相似文献

The mutation load is sensitive to changes in the segregation ratio caused, for example, by biased conversion. If the distortion, measured by the force of conversion, is greater than the loss of fitness in the mutation heterozygotes, then the mutation load will be far away from its normal value. Examples are given where a small positive bias together with realistic fitness parameters increase the mutation load by more than two orders of magnitude. In practical terms this implies that great restrictions should be placed on the use of substances and treatments that may induce mutations associated with a positive conversion bias. 相似文献

J. B. S. Haldane (Amer. Nat. 71, 337–349, 1937) argued that, in equilibrium populations, the effect of deleterious mutation on average fitness depends primarily on the mutation rate and is independent of the severity of the mutations. Specifically, the equilibrium population fitness is e−μH, where μH is the haploid genomic mutation rate. Here we extend Haldane's result to a variety of reproductive systems. Using an analysis based on the frequency of classes of individuals with a specified number of mutations, we show that Haldane's principle holds exactly for haploid sex, haploid apomixis, and facultative haploid sex. In the cases of diploid automixis with terminal fusion, diploid automixis with central fusion, and diploid selfing, Haldane's principle holds exactly for recessive mutations and approximately for mutations with some heterozygous effect. In the cases of K-ploid apomixis, diploid endomitosis, and haplodiploidy, we show that Haldane's principle holds exactly for recessive lethal mutations. In addition we extend Haldane's result to various mixtures of the above-mentioned reproductive systems. In the case of diploid out-crossing sexuals, we do not obtain an exact analytic result, but present arguments and computer simulations which show that Haldane's result extends to this case as well in the limit as the number of loci becomes large. Although diverse reproductive systems are equally fit at equilibrium, different reproductive systems harbor vastly different numbers of recessive genes at equilibrium and we provide estimates of these numbers. These different numbers of mutations may create transient selective pressures on individuals with reproductive systems different from that of the equilibrium population. 相似文献

A steady current (10·10–10–6·10–9 A) was passed by means of a bridge circuit through a recording microelectrode inserted into a horizontal cell of the turtle retina. Illumination of the retina caused an increase in the resistance of the microelectrode circuit (by 10–80 M), causing a change in the shape of the recorded response of the horizontal cell to light. The change in resistance was shown to take place, not on the cell membrane itself, but inside the cell close to the microelectrode tip. The effect described can be reproduced by passing a current through one barrel of a double-barreled microelectrode alongside the recording barrel, but the strength required for this current was greater than that passed through the recording barrel. If the membrane potential of the horizontal cell was made equal to the equilibrium potential (by means of a steady current passed through extracellular electrodes) the hyperpolarization response to light and the effect of the increase in resistance of the microelectrode circuit disappeared simultaneously. On the other hand, artificial hyperpolarization of the cell membrane caused an increase, but depolarization caused a decrease in the resistance of the microelectrode circuit. The frequencies of spontaneous mutations (reversions his-4----His+ and forward mutations to rifampicin-, nalidixic acid- or valine-resistance) in radiation-resistant mutants Gamr444 and Gamr445 are much lower than in the wild-type strain AB1157. His+ revertants and rifampicin-resistant mutants Rifr are induced by low doses of gamma-rays more efficiently than in the wild-type. Low doses of UV light only enhanced mutagenic activity in Gamr strains for induction of His+ reversions but not for Rifr mutations. For the wild-type strain the frequencies of His+ and Rifr mutations increase proportionally to the square of dose both of UV light and gamma-rays. For the most radioresistant Gamr444 mutant the frequencies of UV- and gamma-rays-induced Rifr mutations and of gamma-rays-induced reversions increase linearly with the dose. Possible reasons for these anomalies of radiation-induced mutagenesis in Gamr mutants are discussed. 相似文献

Defibrillation of cardiac tissue can be viewed in the context of dynamical systems theory as the attempt to move a dynamical system from the basin of attraction of one attractor (fibrillation) to another (the uniform rest state) by applying a stimulus whose form is physically constrained. Here we give an introduction to the physical mechanism of cardiac defibrillation from this dynamical perspective and examine the role of resistive inhomogeneity on defibrillation efficacy. Using numerical simulations with rotating waves on a one-dimensional periodic ring, we study the role of the spatial scale of resistive inhomogeneity on defibrillation. For a rotating wave on a periodic ring there are three stable attractors, namely the uniform rest state, a wave traveling clockwise and a wave traveling counterclockwise. As a result, the application of a stimulus has the potential for three different outcomes, namely elimination of the wave, phase resetting of the wave, and reversal of the wave. The results presented here show that with resistive inhomogeneities of large spatial scale, all three of these transitions are possible with large amplitude shocks, so that the probability of defibrillation is bounded well below one, independent of stimulus amplitude. On the other hand, resistive inhomogeneities of small spatial scale produce a defibrillation threshold that is qualitatively consistent with that found experimentally, namely the probability of defibrillation success is an increasing function that approaches one for large enough stimulus amplitude. Extending these results to higher dimensions, we describe conditions for successful defibrillation of functional reentry with large scale spatial inhomogeneity, but find that elimination of anatomical reentry is quite difficult. With small spatial scale inhomogeneity, there are no similar restrictions. 相似文献

We discovered an enhancing effect of background illumination on amplitude and total duration of electrical reactions of the tectum of the midbrain and pallial thickening in response to a flash and electrical stimulation of the optic nerve. This effect is analogous to the phenomenon of photic potentiation known for the visual system of mammals. Changes of evoked potentials in the contralateral pallial thickening and tectum were fairly stable and survived throughout the course of the entire period of illumination (up to 30 min). The effect was intensified with an increase of illumination intensity. Intensification of response on the part of the tectum and pallial thickening during steady illumination was accompanied by a weakening of slow background electrical activity. During the action of background illumination, the excitability of the tectum rose considerably with direct electrical stimulation. The influence of prolonged illumination on responses of the tectum and pallial thickening was more clearly detected at submaximal strengths of stimulation of the optic nerve or tectum. All of the effects of photic potentiation are confined to centers contralateral to the illuminated eye. This indicates the absence of diffuse effects on excitability of the turtle brain.A. N.
