In Hemiphractus fang–like teeth are ankylosed to the premaxilla, maxilla and prevomer, and bony odontoids are found on the dentary, angular and palatine bones. The odontoids are small, but a larger pair at the front of the lower jaw project upwards and backwards into the mouth and fit into a diastema between the anterior premaxillary teeth when the mouth is closed.
The teeth are unipartite and monocuspid, and each consists of a strongly recurved and elongated cone of orthodentine, capped at the tip by a thin layer of enamel. The inner circumpulpal layer of the dentine is tubular, but no tubules are present in the outer pallial layer. During tooth development, dentine is formed before the enamel matrix is produced, and the tooth germs lie horizontally beneath the ventral surface of each dentigerous bone. On eruption, the tooth germs migrate horizontally and become ankylosed to the outer edge of the jaw bone by a layer of cellular cementum.
During tooth replacement, the vast majority of the dentine of each tooth, and the cementum at the tooth base, are resorbed by osteoclasts. It is not clear whether the tips of the teeth are shed or not.  相似文献

An SEM study of the surface morphology of the major stages of mature and developing teeth of the leopard frog was made using anorganic preparations of the teeth and jaws. After initial development, the crown area changed little during subsequent tooth eruption, ankylosis and maturation. The thin enamel covering extended further down the shaft than expected. After ankylosis, the surfaces of the tooth continued to mature. The unmineralized gap between the crown and the pedestal, which is prominent in most amphibians, gradually filled in as the ankylosed tooth aged. The upper portion of the pedestal initially formed a dentine surface which was globular in appearance due to partial calcification of the surface collagen fibres but became smooth with uniformly calcified fibres as the ankylosed tooth matured. The lower portion of the pedestal was more variable and there was a gradual transition of dentine into a more cellular, bone-like tissue which contained lacunae and larger fibre bundles. This bone-like tissue was very distinct in surface morphology from the bone of the adjacent jaw, and as the tooth matured it changed from a coarse, woven appearance to one more like lamellar bone. Resorption bays were present in both the dentine and bony areas of teeth which were being shed. During development, the pedestal, which attaches the tooth to the jaw, formed as a separate calcification site and did not form a complete ring until fusion of its buccal surface with that of the overlying crown. The wear sustained by the teeth of the highly mineralized radula of Patella vulgata and the unmineralized radula of Agriolomax reticulatus has been studied with the scanning electron microscope. The unworn teeth of P. vulgata have tall pointed cusps and wear is first seen as a chipping of the tips then as abrasion. There is a well defined abraded surface giving the worn teeth a chisel shape. In cleaved teeth fibres ˜ 800 Å in diameter are observed parallel to the axis of the tooth. Evidence is presented for chemical etching and for the existence of a surface coat on the tooth. A. reticulatus teeth show wear over their whole surface. With the aid of the grooves in the jaw caused by the teeth the role of the jaw in flattening the radula and protracting and retracting the odontophore is confirmed. From the arrangement of the abraded surfaces on the teeth of P. vulgata it was deduced that the teeth rows are abraded one at a time while on a convex surface at or near the bending plane.  相似文献

A cinéradiographic analysis of the feeding movements in Varanus bengalensis produced the following results. The mouth is opened by raising the head (upper jaw) rather than by lowering the lower jaw. Starting from the resting position, the muzzle unit is elevated around 9 degrees relative to the rest of the skull during jaw opening; the quadrate swings anteriorly around 21 degrees. During jaw closure, the snout is depressed around 15 degrees relative to the rest of the skull, hence 6 degrees beyond the resting position. The quadrate swings backwards around 27 degrees. Amphikinesis is interpreted as allowing a stronger posterior recurvature of the maxillary teeth in Varanus. This increases the holding effect of the teeth without increasing their length, an adaptation of Varanus to capture relatively large prey. The formation of plicidentine (dentine infolding) in the teeth of Varanus increases the surface of attachment of the teeth on the supporting bone. Moreover, the dentine lamellae take up tensile and compressive stresses along their long axes upon axial or vertical loading of the teeth. The slope of pleurodonty is modelled so as to minimalize shear stress on the surface of ankylosis upon axial or vertical loading of the teeth.  相似文献

New material ofSpeonesydrion iani, an Early Devonian dipnoan from New South Wales, has provided additional Information on the dentition and jaws. Two new partial palates have been found, and X-rays of the parasphenoid shows that the structure is well preserved. The palatal teeth are well worn even in partly grown material, and they do not originate at a growth point, but at a thickening of the palate. More mandibles have been collected, and thin sections have been prepared to allow a discussion of their histology. On the mandible the teeth are clear, and they are much more defined than they are on the palate. The dental heel is variably developed, and grows in phases by thickening of the dentine at the contact with the bone. Dentine forms on the bone at the base of the heel, partly by Solution of the bone and the addition of dentine from the pulp canals, but also by direct growth from the pulp canals dorsal to the bone. In the latter case the dentine and bone are in contact, and the two tissues intermingle. The teeth are also formed on a thickened bone and consist of dentine capped with enamel making a crest. Dentine and bone are related as in the heel. We conclude that the teeth inSpeonesydrion are not homologous with the teeth in other dipnoans, and are formed by a different process involving the aggregation of denticles.  相似文献

The soft zone in dentine beneath the dentino-enamel junction is thought to play an important role in tooth function, strain distribution and fracture resistance during mastication. Recently reported asymmetry in mechanical properties with tooth side may point at a basic property of tooth function. The aim of our study was to test if this asymmetry was reflected in the nano- and micromechanical properties of dentine. We investigated the mechanical properties of dentine on the buccal and lingual side of nine extracted human teeth using nano- and microindentation. Properties were analysed on the natural log scale, using maximum likelihood to estimate the parameters. Two-sided 0.05-level likelihood ratio tests were used to assess the influences of surface (buccal versus lingual) and dentine depth, measured from the DEJ in crown dentine and from the CDJ in root dentine. Results showed the well known gradual increase in mechanical properties with increasing distance from the DEJ. Coronal dentine showed higher elastic modulus and hardness on the lingual side of teeth for all measurements, while root dentine was harder on the buccal side. Due to the subtlety of these effects and the small number of teeth studied, results failed to reach statistical significance. Results suggest that dentine nano- and micromechanical properties vary with tooth side in agreement with recent literature using macroscopic methods. They also reveal that buccal-lingual ratios of hardness are in opposite directions in crown and root dentine, suggesting compensatory functions.  相似文献

Three aspects of trigeminal pain are considered: the peripheral mechanisms of pain from teeth and from the cornea, and the role of the trigeminal brainstem nuclei in pain. Pain is probably the only sensation that can be evoked by stimulation of dentin or dental pulp in man. Five nerve-endings enter dentinal tubules from the pulp but do not extend into the outer dentine, which is nevertheless sensitive. In teeth of limited growth in experimental animals, the dental pulp is supplied by A beta, A delta and C fibres and these are associated with two categories of receptor: one responds to cooling and to other stimuli that cause displacement of the contents of the dentinal tubules such as probing and drying the dentine, and the other group responds most vigorously to heating. Some cold sensitive units have A beta fibres and the evidence suggests that stimulation of these is capable of evoking both muscle reflexes and pain and, near threshold, 'pre-pain' sensations. Thermal stimulation of the cornea produces sensations of pain and, with less intense stimuli, irritation, Mechanical stimulation also produces pain but it is not clear whether, below the pain threshold, such stimuli produce touch sensation or some other sensation related to pain. Histologically, the nerve-endings in the corneal epithelium consist of fine, bare processes closely associated with the surface of the epithelial cells. Recordings in experimental animals have shown that many of the receptors respond to several different forms of stimulus and their properties correlate well with those predicted from psychophysical experiments in man. The results of trigeminal tractotomy in man and recordings from the trigeminal brainstem nuclei in anaesthetized animals, have generally indicated that nucleus caudalis is the main relay in the pain pathway from the face and associated structures. Recent observations have, however, shown that tractotomy does not produce complete analgesia of this region and responses to thermal stimulation of teeth and noxious stimulation of other oro-facial tissues have been recorded from the more rostral parts of the brainstem nuclear complex. The surgical procedures employed to set up an animal for stereotaxic recording may induce long-lasting depression in the excitability of neurons in these nuclei, which masks some of their properties. The mechanism of this depression has not been established.  相似文献

Cumulative lead exposure in 193 inner-city Black children was evaluated by measuring lead concentrations in the primary dentine and the circumpulpal dentine of their deciduous teeth. The children’s dentine lead levels were comparable to those reported in population studies of low-income children living in inner-city areas. The results of neuropsychological tests administered at age 7 were available for children in the sample; we performed further neuropsychological assessments when their teeth were shed (10–14 yr of age). Higher dentine lead concentrations were associated with deficits in neuropsychological test performance at both testings, with performance abilities more strongly affected than verbal abilities. Moreover, the negative effects of lead on neuropsychological functioning were more evident when lead concentrations in circumpulpal dentine, rather than in primary dentine, was used as the index of lead exposure. Based on this finding, we suggest that circumpulpal dentine and primary dentine should be assayed separately in order to yield a more sensitive estimate of exposure to lead.  相似文献

The present work is a contribution to an extensive comparative structural and developmental study we have undertaken to understand the evolution of the dermal skeleton in osteichthyans. We have investigated the structure of developing and functional tooth-like dermal denticles located on the head of Denticeps clupeoides, a clupeomorph, and compared their features to those of oral teeth. Morphological (scanning electron microscopy) and structural (light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy) observations clearly demonstrate that these small, sharp, conical and slightly backward-oriented denticles are true odontodes, i.e., homologous to oral teeth. They are composed of a dentine cone surrounding a pulp cavity, the top being covered by a hypermineralized cap. These odontodes are attached to a circular pedicel of attachment bone by a ligament that mineralizes, and the attachment bone matrix merges with that of the bony support. The pedicel of attachment bone surrounds a vascular cavity that is connected to the pulp cavity which is devoid of blood vessels and of nerve endings. Once the odontode is functional, the deposition of collagen matrix (called circumpulpar dentine) continues against the dentine, ligament, and attachment bone surfaces, thereby provoking a narrowing of the pulp cavity. Odontodes are shed by resorption occurring at the base, but their pedicels of attachment bone persist at the bone surface and become embedded in the bone matrix, within which they are clearly visible. The oral teeth are similar in shape, size, and structure to the odontodes, and they show only small differences probably related to the different function of these elements: They are more firmly anchored to the attachment bone, and the amount of dentine is relatively smaller than in odontodes. Despite their different functions, this close structural agreement between teeth and odontodes in Denticeps suggests that 1) competent cells from the same (ecto)mesenchymal population might be involved and 2) the genetic control of the developmental processes could be identical. The structure of ankylotic teeth in Xenopus laevis was studied by light, transmission, and scanning electron microscopy as well as by microradiography in decalcified and undecalcified specimens. The mature teeth of Xenopus laevis are calcified from the crown to the base, fused to the jaw bone, and have no uncalcified area, such as a fibrous ring separating the tooth into the crown and pedicle. Microradiography shows that the mature tooth and jaw bone appear as an X-ray opaque area, except for the basal region of the dentine. This region is composed of an X-ray translucent area and an X-ray opaque thin layer on the lingual side of the translucent area. The mature tooth is composed of two differently calcified areas: (1) a highly calcified area, which makes up almost all of the tooth and contains a thin layer of the basal dentine on the lingual side, and (2) a lowly calcified basal dentine, which is fused to the jaw bone. Therefore, the lowly calcified area does not completely separate the dentine and jaw bone. Repeating banding patterns among the collagen fibrils differ among the dentine-forming area and the matrices of dentine and jaw bone. During the formation of ankylosis of the tooth germ, collagen bundles in the dentine-forming area accumulate directly on the surface of the jaw bone. Consequently, the mature teeth of Xenopus laevis fuse to the jaw bone directly without the mediation of the other structures.  相似文献

The iodoplatinate (IP) reaction, a selective method for visualization of phospholipids, was applied to the predentine and dentine of rat incisors and compared with malachite green aldehyde (MG) fixation/staining. Spot tests indicated (1) that IP specifically stains phospholipids, but not amino acids, displaying as do phospholipids, quaternary ammonium groups; and (2) phosphatidylserine and sphingomyelin were also stained by MGA. Although this reagent is known to interact with phosphorus, phosphoproteins remained unstained. In the rat incisor, an IP-positive network including granules and thin filaments was seen in predentine in the inter-collagen spaces, in many cases closely associated with collagen fibres and their periodic striations. In dentine, positively stained needle-like structures were located along individual collagen fibres, or at the surface of groups of collagen fibres. This staining pattern was unchanged on sections of material pretreated with acetone, whereas the staining was abolished or markedly reduced when the samples were treated either with chloroform/methanol or phospholipase C prior to the IP reaction. Pretreatment of the samples with hyaluronidase promoted subsequent diffusion of the staining. A very similar staining pattern was observed with MGA, in accordance with earlier reports. The present findings validate the histochemical results reported previously on the distribution and potential role(s) of phospholipids in dentine biomineralization.  相似文献

Summary Rat incisors were fixed with a solution of 0.05% Cuprolinic Blue and 2.5% glutaraldehyde in the presence of various concentrations of MgCl2 according to the critical electrolyte concentration (CEC) principle. This method allows glycosaminoglycans (GAG) to be properly preserved and visualized. Small granules were stained by the cationic dye in the predentine in the absence of MgCl2. These granules grew in size and became more electron-dense when the concentration of the electrolyte was increased. Larger ribbon-like structures and granules were seen when 0.3M MgCl2 was used. In the dentine, tiny dots in close association with the surface of the collagen fibres, or their periodic striations, were positively stained. A thick electron-dense band located on the dentine side at the predentine-dentine junction was seen both with and without 0.05 M MgCl2. With higher concentrations of the electrolyte (0.1–0.3 M), this band was reduced to a very thin line located at the border of the dentine, along with mineralizing collagen fibres. This demonstrated the presence of GAG at the dentine surface and therefore indicated that GAG may play a role as nucleator agent.  相似文献

本文是利用扫描电子显微镜对陆栖恐龙tvrannosaurid与海栖渐增mosasaurid”牙齿结构进行的比较解剖学研究。化石采自加拿大RedDeerhiverValley上白里统Horse-shoeCanyon组。通过研究地层中出现的生物化石,特别是动物牙齿的组织结构,可以了解动物为了适应生活环境而发生的进化过程,也可以推测它们的系统发育关系。tyrannosaund与mosas。id都拥有锥状的同形齿,牙齿侧向扁平,且略向后弯曲。研究结果确认了tyrannosaurid的牙齿由于薄层的无柱釉质bPrismaticenamel)向齿质的侵人而造成许多的凹凸构造,此锯齿状构造沿着牙齿的前后缘,由牙齿的顶端分布至基部。因此tyrannosaurid的牙齿呈现着锐利的切缘;在这些凹凸状切缘的沟与小窝的深部可观察到有机物的沉积。但是类似的锯齿状构造只能在齿冠呈钝圆状的mosasaurid牙齿的基部附近观察到。我们以扫描电子显微镜(SEM)检索,确认两爬行类的齿质皆是属于中间型的真性齿质(intermediatetypeorthodentine);所谓orthodentine即是细管齿质(tubulardentine)。tyrannosaurid的真性齿质的齿质小管只在齿质一釉质相接处Uentino—enamaljunction)附近放散出规则性的分歧与末枝。但mosasaurid的真性齿质的齿质J。管,在齿质的中间层与表层中,呈现着由复杂  相似文献

The functional teeth of Pacific walruses that died or were harvested in the Retkyn Spit, Enmelen village, Kolyuchin Island, Vankarem Cape, Enurmino village, and Chegitun River region in 2005, 2007–2008, and 2010–2011 were examined. The definite structure was investigated in animals of their first year of life. The presence of a milk layer in the tooth dentine can be considered as a mark that all the cement layers have been preserved, and the age determination of an individual is precise. The annual increment of dentine significantly changed with age in different parts of the tooth (buccal, lingual, and central), and the annual growth of dentine decreased every year. The growth rate of the upper jaw teeth was significantly higher, and the duration of their growth was much longer than that in the lower jaw teeth. The wearing of dentine and cement layers was unequal in different parts of tooth. Several recommendations for choosing a tooth for the determination of the walrus’s age and for the estimation of age using the layered tooth structure are given.  相似文献

Abstract The structure, morphology and organisation of the cusps of the major lateral radula teeth of the chiton Plaxiphora albida have been examined using light, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, together with energy dispersive X-ray analysis and Mössbauer spectroscopy. In this chiton species, both the anterior and posterior surfaces of the major lateral teeth are composed of magnetite, which is indicated to be non-stoichiometric and associated with some maghemite, together with small amounts of phosphorus and silicon. This outer layer surrounds an inner core region of the tooth, which only reaches the surface through a small window zone on the anterior surface and which contains large amounts of iron and phosphorus presumably in the form of iron(III) phosphate. The organic matrix, on which the teeth are constructed, consists of a zone of densely packed fine fibres at the surface of the tooth, underlain by larger fibres which become sparser deeper into the cusp. The core region is characterized by the presence of densely packed short fibres. In contrast to the situation found in most other species of chiton, large fibres of the organic matrix extend throughout the region of magnetite mineralization, leading to the suggestion that the matrix exerts more control over the mineralization of magnetite than has previously been thought.  相似文献

Abstract

Many types of wear facets can be found in mammalian teeth. Some are related to the initial surface, others use the cross-section of the enamel as the main tool. In primary occlusal surfaces facets mark the gradual wear, that are related to a relatively late ontogeny. Facets in teeth with secondary occlusal surfaces, however, represent specific arrangements of crests of enamel and dentine. Such facets require some initial wear to become fully functional. The tooth morphology guarantees such facets to be effective for a long period of time. Therefore they can be discriminated as specialized facets. From the different types of facets three specialized ones were selected, blade facets, rasp-facets, and nipper-facets, because they ate widely distributed, function differently, and are comparable with mechanical tools. They are long lasting and differ in the amount of exposed dentine. The amount of dentine is used to differentiate phases during late ontogeny, the part of the life history, when teeth are exposed to wear. Consequently the various types of facets can be related to different ontogenetic phases. The relevant phases are prolonged at the cost of other ontogenetic phases. Therefore, the various specialized wear facets represent heterochronies within the ontogeny of teeth.  相似文献

Contradictory reports on the interreation of caries and attrition concerning their destructive activity at the occlusal surface of teeth required more investigation. Some suggested that the abrasive action of attrition worked against the progress of decay. Others proposed that attrition facilitated the development of caries in dentine exposed due to the dental wear. A comparison of the condition of teeth in western societies from an intermediate stage, with the preceding period characterized by excessive attrition, and with the following period of ongoing reduction of dental wear, might elucidate the mutual relationship. For this reason the almost complete dental assemblage of fifty men, whalers buried during their short sojourn in the Arctic in the 17th and 18th centuries at a Dutch whaling station, and the data of their contemporaries, were evaluated. The results confirmed the proposition that the rise in caries incidence from (pre-) medieval times on, was associated with an ongoing fall of dental attrition. Within this sample of an intermediate phase, one sees that the percentage of carious molars decreases considerably when the degree of dental wear increases. Besides, at the occlusal surface the decay was almost exclusively located in the natural fissures and pits of teeth, not in the exposed dentine due to wear. These findings strongly suggest a competitive relationship between progress of caries and attrition. The best impression of the attrition rate is gained by linkage of degree of dental attrition (i.e. functional age) to age at death. The wide age ranges fitting to the degrees of molar wear make it hazardous to use attrition for age determination.  相似文献

The amount of sclerotic root dentine increases with age, proceeding from the apex towards the crown. There are obvious optical changes in the tissue, which becomes translucent (dentine is normally opaque). Therefore, the sclerosis of root dentine could be a reliable indicator of age in anthropological studies of human remains. We studied the histological aspects of sclerotic dentine in longitudinal thin sections (70-140 microns) of undecalcified premolars, cut in the bucco-lingual plane. To quantify the sclerosis and to construct a reference standard, we sectioned 85 premolars from subjects of known age (70 from odontological extractions and 15 from a university collection). Another 10 teeth from medieval subjects were studied to assess the applicability of the method to ancient skeletal collections. The technique consists of embedding the tooth in a polyester resin (cold method), sectioning it with a diamond blade microtome. Qualitative analysis was performed with polarized light microscopy and measurements were made with a quote 2D x,y viewer and on digital images. The sclerotic root dentine was quantified with both linear and surface area parameters in order to assess the correlation with age. The quality of the sections was sufficient for the clear discernment and quantification of the sclerotic dentine. Indeed, the technique allowed us to obtain good results with a considerable saving of time and money compared with other dental histological techniques. The best correlation with age was obtained from the surface area parameter, particularly after exclusion of the cementum and pulp chamber. To produce comparable data from similar studies, we advise the use of cold resins, as used here, and digital computerized analyzers because of their accuracy, precision and quickness. The qualitative analysis of the ancient teeth indications that this dental aging techniques can be applied to both recent and ancient dental tissues.  相似文献

In the course of an evolutionary and developmental study on the dermal skeleton, our attention was drawn to the existence of denticles located outside the oral cavity in the atheriniform species Atherion elymus. These denticles, attached to the surface of most dermal bones of the head, are especially numerous on the snout, chin and the undersides of the lower region of the head, where they are aligned forming a crenulated keel. Using light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, we clearly demonstrate the dental (vs bony) nature of these denticles. They are small, conical elements mostly oriented backwards and are not ankylosed to the bone support. Ligaments originating from the internal and external surface of the base of the dentine cone link the denticles to the attachment bone, which itself merges with the bone support below. The denticles have the same form and structure as teeth, from which they differ only in having a larger base and a pulp cavity that is nearly completely filled with secondary dentine by centripetal deposition. This suggests that the denticles have a longer functional history than teeth. Atherion is now the fourth teleost lineage found to develop such denticles on the head.  相似文献
