In songbirds, developmental stress affects song learning and production. Altered hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis function resulting in elevated corticosterone (CORT) may contribute to this effect. We examined whether developmental conditions affected the association between adult song and HPA axis function, and whether nutritional stress before and after nutritional independence has distinct effects on song learning and/or vocal performance. Zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) were raised in consistently high (HH) or low (LL) food conditions until post-hatch day (PHD) 62, or were switched from high to low conditions (HL) or vice versa (LH) at PHD 34. Song was recorded in adulthood. We assessed the response of CORT to handling during development and to dexamethasone (DEX) and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) challenges during adulthood. Song learning and vocal performance were not affected by nutritional stress at either developmental stage. Nutritional stress elevated baseline CORT during development. Nutritional stress also increased rate of CORT secretion in birds that experienced stress only in the juvenile phase (HL group). Birds in the LL group had lower CORT levels after injection of ACTH compared to the other groups, however there was no effect of nutritional stress on the response to DEX. Thus, our findings indicate that developmental stress can affect HPA function without concurrently affecting song.  相似文献

The stress response—increases in circulating glucocorticoids following a stressor—is typically considered adaptive, but few studies address the fitness consequences of individual variation in stress response. Generally, due to negative consequences of prolonged elevation of glucocorticoids, animals should have a transient stress response just sufficient to cope with the stressor. In rodents, stress responsiveness is affected by early developmental experience, and hyper-responsiveness to stress is linked to morbidity and mortality. We assessed individual variation in stress responses in free-living song sparrows, Melospiza melodia, in relation to fitness-related measures including song and overwinter survival. Birds with greater increases in corticosterone 30 min following restraint stress were less likely to return to breed the following year. Stress responsiveness was also correlated with song complexity: males with fewer syllables in their song repertoires had greater stress reactivity. Our findings support the hypothesis that developmental stressors both impair song development and affect the adult stress response. Thus, individual variation in the stress response may relate to variation in fitness.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to assess whether, and to what extent prior handling, restraint or social crowding stress during 3-10 days affects the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) response to an acute short-lasting restraint stress. Also the effect of a feedback inhibitory mechanism of corticosterone in the impairment of HPA axis by these stressors was investigated. Male Wistar rats were pretreated with handling 1 min/day for 3-10 days, restraint 2 times daily for 3-7 days and crowding stress for 7 days before exposure to acute restraint stress in metal tubes for 10 min. Some group of rats received exogenous s.c. corticosterone either once 25 mg/kg or 2 times daily 10 mg/kg for 3-10 days before restraint stress. After the last restraint the rats were decapitated and their trunk blood was collected for the measurement of plasma ACTH and serum corticosterone levels. Handling for 3-7 days, restraint for 3-7 days, and crowding for 7 days and a single pretreatment with corticosterone--all significantly and to a similar extent inhibited the restraint stress-induced increase in ACTH and corticosterone secretion. Chronic pretreatment with corticosterone blunted the restraint stress-induced increase in HPA axis activity. These results indicate that repeated short-lasting stress induced by handling, restraint, or crowding potently attenuates the acute restraint stress-induced stimulatory action of the HPA axis. They also indicate adaptive action of moderate stress on the HPA axis response to acute stress. The results also suggest that a short-lasting hypersecretion of corticosterone during psychological stress may induce a prolonged feedback inhibition of the HPA axis activity. The attenuation of HPA axis response by prior handling has also obvious methodological implications.  相似文献

Numerous studies have focused on song in songbirds as a signal involved in mate choice and intrasexual competition. It is expected that song traits such as song rate reflect individual quality by being dependent on energetic state or condition. While seasonal variation in bird song (i.e., breeding versus non-breeding song) and its neural substrate have received a fair amount of attention, the function and information content of song outside the breeding season is generally much less understood. Furthermore, typically only measures of condition involving body mass are examined with respect to song rate. Studies investigating a potential relationship between song rate and other indicators of condition, such as physiological measures of nutritional condition, are scant. In this study, we examined whether non-breeding song rate in male European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) reflects plasma metabolite levels (high-density lipoproteins (HDL), albumin, triglycerides and cholesterol) and/or body mass. Song rate was significantly positively related to a principal component representing primarily HDL, albumin and cholesterol (and to a lesser degree plasma triglyceride levels). There was only a trend toward a significant positive correlation between song rate and body mass, and no significant correlation between body mass and the abovementioned principal component. Therefore, our results indicate that nutritional condition and body mass represent different aspects of condition, and that song rate reflects nutritional rather than body condition. Additionally, we also found that intra-individual song rate consistency (though not song rate itself) was significantly positively related to lutein levels, but not to body mass or nutritional condition. Together our results suggest that the relation between physiological measures of nutritional condition and song rate, as well as other signals, may present an interesting line of future research, both inside and outside the breeding season.  相似文献

Adaptations of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to voluntary exercise in rodents are not clear, because most investigations use forced-exercise protocols, which are associated with psychological stress. In the present study, we examined the effects of voluntary wheel running on the circadian corticosterone (Cort) rhythm as well as HPA axis responsiveness to, and recovery from, restraint stress. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into exercise (E) and sedentary (S) groups, with E rats having 24-h access to running wheels for 5 wk. Circadian plasma Cort levels were measured at the end of each week, except for week 5 when rats were exposed to 20 min of restraint stress, followed by 95 min of recovery. Measurements of glucocorticoid receptor content in the hippocampus and anterior pituitary were performed using Western blotting at the termination of the restraint protocol. In week 1, circadian Cort levels were twofold higher in E compared with S animals, but the levels progressively decreased in the E group throughout the training protocol to reach similar values observed in S by week 4. During restraint stress and recovery, Cort values were similar between E and S, as was glucocorticoid receptor content in the hippocampus and pituitary gland after death. Compared with E, S animals had higher plasma ACTH levels during restraint. Taken together, these data indicate that 5 wk of wheel running are associated with normal circadian Cort activity and normal negative-feedback inhibition of the HPA axis, as well as with increased adrenal sensitivity to ACTH after restraint stress.  相似文献

Glucocorticoids are essential for normal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity; however, recent studies warn that exposure to excess endogenous or synthetic glucocorticoid during a specific period of prenatal development adversely affects HPA axis stability. We administered dexamethasone (DEX) to pregnant rats during the last week of gestation and investigated subsequent HPA axis regulation in adult male offspring in unrestrained and restraint-stressed conditions. With the use of real-time PCR and RIA, we examined the expression of regulatory genes in the hippocampus, hypothalamus, and pituitary, including corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), arginine vasopressin (AVP), glucocorticoid receptors (GR), mineralcorticoid receptors (MR), and 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase-1 (11beta-HSD-1), as well as the main HPA axis hormones, adrenal corticotropic hormone (ACTH) and corticosterone (CORT). Our results demonstrate that the DEX-exposed group exhibited an overall change in the pattern of gene expression and hormone levels in the unrestrained animals. These changes included an upregulation of CRH in the hypothalamus, a downregulation of MR with a concomitant upregulation of 11beta-HSD-1 in the hippocampus, and an increase in circulating levels of both ACTH and CORT relative to unrestrained control animals. Interestingly, both DEX-exposed and control rats exhibited an increase in pituitary GR mRNA levels following a 1-h recovery from restraint stress; however, the increased expression in DEX-exposed rats was significantly less and was associated with a slower return to baseline CORT compared with controls. In addition, circulating levels of ACTH and CORT as well as hypothalamic CRH and hippocampal 11beta-HSD-1 expression levels were significantly higher in the DEX-exposed group compared with controls following restraint stress. Taken together, these data demonstrate that late-gestation DEX exposure in rats is associated with persistent changes in both the modulation of HPA axis activity and the HPA axis-mediated response to stress.  相似文献

Chronic maternal stress during pregnancy results in the “prenatally stressed” offspring displaying behavioral and neuroendocrine alterations that persist into adulthood. We investigated how inhalation of green odor (a mixture of equal amounts of trans-2-hexenal and cis-3-hexenol) by stressed dams might alter certain indices of prenatal stress in their offspring. These indices were depression-like behavior (increased immobility time in the forced-swim test) and acute restraint stress-induced changes in hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis activity [plasma corticosterone (CORT) and ACTH levels and the number of Fos-immunoreactive cells in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (an index of neuronal activity)]. Pregnant rats were exposed to restraint stress for 60 min/day for 10 days (gestational days 10-19). The prenatally stressed offspring exhibited significant increases in depression-like behavior and in restraint stress-induced ACTH, CORT, and Fos responses, unless their dam had been exposed to green odor. The behavioral effect of the odor was also seen in offspring that were fostered by unstressed dams. The results obtained in the dams themselves were as follows. In vehicle-exposed stressed dams, but not in green odor-exposed ones, total body and adrenal weights were significantly decreased or increased, respectively. Depression-like behavior was not observed in the vehicle-exposed stressed dams themselves. Green odor inhalation prevented the impairment of maternal behavior induced by restraint stress. Thus, exposure of dams to stress may affect both the fetal brain and fetal HPA axis, and also maternal behavior, leading to altered behavioral and neuroendocrine responses in the offspring. Such effects may be prevented by the stressed dams inhaling green odor.  相似文献

Birdsong is a sexually selected trait and is often viewed as an indicator of male quality. The developmental stress hypothesis proposes a model by which song could be an indicator; the time during early development, when birds learn complex songs and/or local variants of song, is of rapid development and nutritional stress. Birds that cope best with this stress may better learn to produce the most effective songs. The developmental stress hypothesis predicts that early food restriction should impair development of song-control brain regions at the onset of song learning. We examined the effect of food restriction on song-control brain regions in fledgling (both sexes, 23-26 days old) song sparrows (Melospiza melodia). Food restriction selectively reduced HVC volume in both sexes. In addition, sex differences were evident in all three song-control regions. This study lends further support to a growing body of literature documenting a variety of behavioural, physiological and neural detriments in several songbird species resulting from early developmental stress.  相似文献

Stress-induced reproductive dysfunction is a relatively common cause of infertility in women. In response to everyday life stress, some individuals readily develop reproductive dysfunction (i.e., they are stress sensitive), whereas others are more stress resilient. Female cynomolgus monkeys, when exposed to mild combined psychosocial and metabolic stress (change in social environment + 20% reduced calorie diet), can be categorized as stress sensitive (SS; they rapidly become anovulatory in response to stress), medium stress resilient (MSR; they slowly become anovulatory in response to prolonged stress), or highly stress resilient (HSR; they maintain normal menstrual cycles in response to stress). In this study, we examined whether increased sensitivity to stress-induced reproductive dysfunction is associated with elevated adrenal axis activity by measuring 1) the diurnal release of ACTH and cortisol, 2) ACTH and cortisol in response to an acute psychological stress, 3) the percent suppression of cortisol in response to dexamethasone negative feedback, 4) the diurnal release of ACTH and cortisol following exposure to mild psychosocial and metabolic stress, 5) the concentration of cortisol in hair, and 6) adrenal weight. SS monkeys (n = 5) did not differ from MSR (n = 5) or HSR (n = 7) monkeys in any measurement of baseline HPA axis activity or the integrated measurements of chronic HPA axis activity. However, MSR + SS monkeys (n = 10) did secrete more cortisol than HSR monkeys during the daytime hours (1000-1800) following exposure to a novel social environment and reduced diet. We conclude that increased activity of the HPA axis is unlikely to be the primary mechanism causing increased sensitivity to stress-induced reproductive dysfunction.  相似文献

Birdsong is a sexual signal that serves as an indicator of male quality. There is already abundant evidence that song elaboration reflects early life‐history because early developmental stress affects neural development of song control systems, and leaves irreversible adverse effects on song phenotypes. Especially in closed‐ended vocal learners, song features crystallized early in life are less subject to changes in adulthood. This is why less attention has been paid to lifelong song changes in closed‐ended learners. However, in the eyes of female birds that gain benefits from choosing mates based on male songs, not only past but also current conditions encoded in songs would be meaningful, given that even crystallized songs in closed‐ended learners would not be identical in the long term. In this study, we examine within‐individual song changes in the Java sparrow Lonchura oryzivora, with the aim of shedding light on the relationship between song and long‐term life history. Specifically, we compared song length, tempo, and song complexity measures between the point just after song crystallization and around 1 yr later, and also compared those traits between fathers and sons to clarify the effect of vocal learning. While it is not surprising that song complexity did not differ depending on age or between fathers and sons, we found that song length and tempo increased with age. Follow‐up analyses have revealed that frequency bandwidth and peak frequency of song notes also elevated with age. Our results show that song performance related to motor skills can be improved even after song crystallization. We also suggest that song performance in closed‐ended vocal learners gives a reliable clue for mate choice by reflecting male quality with aging.  相似文献

The authors have studied mechanisms which could be involved in the sustained activation of the hypothalamus–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis during continuous infusion of rats with recombinant human interleukin-1β (IL-1β). First, the effects of 3 days of intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) infusion of rats with IL-1 on plasma adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) and corticosterone (B) levels were investigated. Thereafter, changes in plasma ACTH and B levels were followed in rats intraperitoneally (i.p.) infused with IL-1β after immunoneutralization of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), hypophysectomy (HPX), macrophage depletion using dichloromethylene diphosphonate (Cl2MDP)-containing liposomes, adrenalectomy (ADX) and dexamethasone (DEX) administration, respectively. Infusion of IL-1β i.c.v., even in doses as low as 0.1 μg/day, induced significant increases in plasma ACTH and B levels. HPX and ADX rats died within 18 h after starting the IL-1β infusion (0.5 μg/day). Immunoneutralization of CRH significantly decreased and macrophage depletion significantly increased the stimulation of the HPA axis by IL-1 (4.0 μg/day). Administration of high doses of DEX completely abolished the stimulation of the HPA axis by IL-1β (2.0 μg/day). The present study demonstrates that lower doses of IL-1β were able to activate the HPA axis when infused i.c.v. compared with i.p. Regarding stimulation of the HPA axis by chronic i.p. infusion of IL-1β the present study: (1) provides evidence that the CRH system is involved; (2) provides no evidence for a direct stimulatory effect of IL-1β on the release of B by the adrenal gland which is of sufficient magnitude to resist the stress of chronic i.p. IL-1β infusion; (3) shows that endogenous macrophage-derived mediators, induced by i.p. IL-1β infusion, express an overall inhibitory rather than a stimulatory effect on the activity of the HPA axis; (4) demonstrates that exogenous administration of DEX blocks the effect of IL-1β, which fits well in the concept of an immunoregulatory feedback between IL-1β and glucocorticoids.  相似文献

In urban habitats, organisms face unique fitness challenges including disturbance from human activity and noise. One physiological mechanism that may be plastically or evolutionarily modified to ameliorate deleterious effects of anthropogenic disturbance is the adrenocortical stress response. Individuals in urban environments may display smaller stress responses, which may prevent pathologies associated with consistent elevation of stress hormones, and may also show differences in baseline corticosterone (CORT, the primary avian stress hormone), due to altered energetic demands or chronic stress. We examined whether stress physiology and condition metrics in male song sparrows Melospiza melodia vary as a function of discrete differences in anthropogenic disturbance level (activity centers and refuges) or with continuous variation in an urbanization score and noise environment. Males breeding in activity centers displayed lower maximal (acute) CORT levels than activity refuge males, and acute CORT also tended to negatively correlate with urbanization score. Baseline CORT did not differ between habitat types, and activity center males also showed no evidence of changes in body mass, hematocrit, or antioxidant capacity. Further, activity center males had higher quality feathers (indicative of higher condition at molt) than activity refuge males. We found no indication that the noise environment altered stress physiology or condition in song sparrows. Overall, results suggest that song sparrows are an urban adapter species, which are not detrimentally affected by unique selective pressures encountered in the urban environment.  相似文献

Complex birdsong is a classic example of a sexually selected ornamental trait. In many species, females prefer males with large song repertoires, possibly because repertoire size is limited by the size of song control nuclei which reflect developmental success. We investigated whether song repertoire size was indicative of brain area and male quality in song sparrows (Melospiza melodia) by determining if repertoire size was related to the volume of song control nucleus HVC, as well as several morphological, immunological and genetic indices of quality. We found that males with large repertoires had larger HVCs and were in better body condition. They also had lower heterophil to lymphocyte ratios, indicating less physiological stress and a robust immune system as measured by the number of lymphocytes per red blood cell. Song repertoire size also tended to increase with neutral-locus genetic diversity, as assessed by mean d2, but was not related to internal relatedness. Our results suggest several mechanisms that might explain the finding of a recent study that song sparrows with large song repertoires have higher lifetime fitness.  相似文献

In adult rodents, leptin has been shown to significantly alter the activity of several neuroendocrine functions, including the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Leptin is generally believed to be inhibitory to HPA activity in adults. Developing rat pups have high circulating levels of leptin, which begs the question of leptin's physiological role in controlling basal and stress-induced adrenocortical activity in neonatal rats. In this study, we treated rat pups daily from days 2-9 (or 6-10) of life with either vehicle or leptin (1 or 3 mg/kg body wt, ip) and determined the effects on body weight gain, fat pad deposits, and HPA activity in 10-day-old pups. We measured hypothalamic CRF mRNA levels in vehicle- and leptin-treated pups by in situ hybridization and determined plasma ACTH, corticosterone, and leptin concentrations under basal conditions or following exposure to a 3-min ether stress. Because leptin activates sympathetic activity and energy expenditure in adults and possibly also in rat pups, and because litter temperature is an important determinant of maternal behavior, we also investigated whether chronic leptin administration would modify aspects of maternal care that are important for the maintenance of HPA function. Chronic leptin treatment increased circulating levels of leptin and had significant dose-related metabolic effects, including reduced body weight gain and fat pad weight in 10-day-old pups. Basal expression of CRF mRNA in the PVN or secretion of ACTH and corticosterone was not modified by leptin treatment. In contrast, chronically elevated leptin concentrations during the neonatal period significantly lowered CRF expression in the PVN 60 min after stress and reduced the duration of the ACTH response to stress in pups, suggesting that glucocorticoid feedback on the HPA axis might be altered by this treatment. In addition, mothers caring for pups injected with leptin displayed longer bouts of anogenital licking of pups than mothers of vehicle-treated rats. Given that this particular type of pup stimulation has been shown to influence stress responsiveness, it is possible that the maternal response modulates the effects of exogenous leptin treatment. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that the leptin signal is functional during the early developmental period and that leptin can modulate the hormonal response to stress in young rats either by a direct effect on the HPA axis or indirectly through changing some aspects of maternal behavior.  相似文献

BackgroundStress system consists of the hypothalamicpituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the locus caeruleus/norepinephrine-autonomic nervous system (ANS). Traditionally, HPA axis activity is evaluated by measuring its end-product cortisol, while the activity of ANS is assessed using heart rate variability (HRV) indices. Alterations in cortisol levels and HRV measures during laboratory-based stress tasks were extensively studied in previous research. However, scarce data exist on the associations of HRV measures with the levels of other adrenal steroid hormones under baseline conditions. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the activity of the HPA axis by measuring salivary cortisol, cortisone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) levels, and their ratios and to examine its association with HRV measures in a sample of healthy young and middle-aged adults.MethodsFor each participant (n=40), three data collection sessions taking place at the same time of the day were scheduled within five working days. Participants completed a self-reported questionnaire on sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics, filled out t h e Perceived Stress Scale and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Also, saliva samples were collected, and physiological measures, including resting HR and HRV, were recorded during three data collection sessions.ResultsStatistically significant associations between diminished parasympathetic vagal tone evaluated by time domain HRV measures and higher salivary cortisol, lower DHEA levels, as well as decreased DHEA to cortisol ratio, were found. Also, physiological stress indicators (i.e., HRV) showed greater intraindividual stability compared with biochemical biomarkers (i.e., salivary steroid hormones) within five days.ConclusionsOur findings suggest that both cortisol and DHEA mediate the link between two stress-sensitive homeostatic systems.  相似文献

Higher corticosterone (CORT) responses to acute stress have previously been reported in quail selected for short (STI) duration of tonic immobility (TI) than for long TI (LTI), although behavioral studies indicated that LTI quail were more fearful. To investigate adrenal and pituitary function in these quail lines and their possible involvement in the differences in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis reactivity, we measured CORT responses to adrenocorticotropin (1-24 ACTH), corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), and arginine vasotocin (AVT) after characterizing the nucleotide acid sequences of these peptides in quail. Although maximum adrenal responses, assessed by ACTH challenge, were higher in STI quail, adrenal sensitivity was comparable for the two genotypes. It is therefore unlikely that differences in HPA axis reactivity involved the adrenal level. AVT and ACTH induced comparable CORT responses in both genotypes, whereas those induced by CRF were much lower. AVT is thus more potent than CRF in quail, but the respective maximum pituitary capacity of both genotypes to secrete ACTH was similar, and it is doubtful that the AVT pathway is involved in the difference in HPA axis reactivity between genotypes. On the other hand, the higher CORT responses induced by CRF in STI quail suggest that CRF might be involved in the differences in HPA axis reactivity between LTI and STI genotypes.  相似文献

Cholesterol ester hydrolase (CEH) activity was characterized in the porcine adrenal gland and experiments conducted to determine the nature of its hormonal regulation. CEH activity was studied in the 14,000 gmax pellet (F4) and in the 192,000 gmax supernatant (F6). Characteristics associated with pH optima, product formation with time, linearity with increasing protein concentration, and equilibration of exogenous cholesterol esters added in acetone with endogenous cholesterol esters were determined. Scatchard analyses of saturation data demonstrated two-site models, which indicated the presence of lower velocity lower Km enzymes (catalytic sites) (L-VKm) and higher velocity higher Km enzymes (catalytic sites) (H-VKm) in both subcellular fractions. Neither ACTH (0.4 micrograms/kg body weight) nor 30-min restraint affected CEH activities at 0.5, 2, and 5 h after injection or initiation of restraint. However, 1 h after a longer restraint period (45 min), F4 H-VKm CEH activity increased concomitantly with decreased F6 L-VKm (P = 0.003). More modest increases in F4 H-VKm (P = 0.03) were still apparent 1 h after the last of nine daily 45-min restraints. Bromocriptine (CB154, a dopamine agonist) administration for 6 days (9.6 mg/daily) reduced plasma prolactin (PRL) by 53% (P < 0.05), but had no effect on CEH activities. ACTH treatment to CB154-induced hypoprolactinemic barrows dramatically reduced F4 (63%) and F6 (49%) L-VKm CEH activity (P = 0.03). These data are the first concerned with regulation of adrenal CEH activity in swine, and are the first to evaluate in vivo treatments on in vitro CEH activity in any species evolutionarily higher than rodents. In vivo regulation of porcine adrenal CEH activity appears complex. Stressor-associated hormonal perturbations apparently must surpass a certain threshold of duration and/or magnitude before they alter CEH activity. Differing Km and Vmax of CEH within and between the two subcellular fractions studied and the differential responses to restraint stressor suggest that as many as four different enzymes with CEH activity are involved. Additionally, the combined effect of ACTH and CB154-induced hypoprolactinemia argues for an interrelated modulatory function of ACTH and PRL (or dopamine) on specific porcine adrenal CEH activities.  相似文献

Selenium deficiency causes oxidative stress and impairs steroidogenesis in vitro. Leptin is closely related to the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Leptin inhibits the HPA axis at the central level while corticosteroids have been shown to stimulate leptin secretion in most studies. We hypothesized that oxidative stress impairs adrenal steroidogenesis and decreases leptin production in vivo. The goal of this study was to investigate in rats the effects of selenium deficiency and oxidative stress on adrenal function and on leptin concentrations. Weanling rats were fed a selenium-deficient (Se-) or selenium-sufficient (Se+) diet for 4-10 weeks. Selenium deficiency caused a marked decrease in liver (> or = 99%) and adrenal (> or = 81%) glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities. Selenium deficiency did not affect basal and short-term adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) stimulated corticosterone or leptin concentrations. In contrast, after long-term ACTH stimulation, selenium deficiency caused a doubling in adrenal isoprostane content and blunted the increase in corticosterone and leptin concentrations observed in Se+ animals. Plasma leptin concentrations were 50% lower in Se- compared to Se+ animals following long-term ACTH. Our results suggest that oxidative stress causes a decrease in circulating corticosterone in response to ACTH, and, as a consequence, a decrease in plasma leptin concentrations.  相似文献

The occurrence of additive genetic variance (VA) for male sexual traits remains a major problem in evolutionary biology. Directional selection normally imposed by female choice is expected to reduce VA greatly, yet recent surveys indicate that a substantial amount remains in many species. We addressed this problem, also known as the 'lek paradox', in Achroia grisella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), an acoustic moth in which males advertise to females with a pulsed ultrasonic song. Using a standard half-sib/full-sib breeding design, we generated F1 progeny from whom we determined VA and genetic covariance (COVA) among seven traits: three song characters, an overall index of song attractiveness, nightly singing period, adult lifespan, and body mass at adult eclosion. Because A. grisella neither feed nor drink as adults, the last trait, eclosion body mass, is considered a measure of 'condition'. We found significant levels of VA and narrow-sense heritabilities (h2) for all seven traits and significant genetic correlations (= COVAi,j / radical (VA i x VA j)) between most pairs of traits (i, j). Male attractiveness was positively correlated with body mass (condition), adult lifespan, and nightly singing period, which we interpret as an energy constraint preventing males in poor condition from singing attractively, from singing many hours per night, and from surviving an extended lifespan. The positive genetic correlation (r = 0.79) between condition and attractiveness, combined with significant levels of VA for both traits, indicates that much of the variation in male song can be explained by VA for condition. Finally, we discuss the morphological and physiological links between condition and song attractiveness, and the ultimate factors that may maintain VA for condition.  相似文献

Changes in activity of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis were examined in adult, prenatally stressed male rats in the experimental depression model of ‘learned helplessness’. It was shown that in males descending from intact mothers a depressive-like state was accompanied by an increase in activity of the entire HPA axis. Namely, expression of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) increased coupled to a rise in plasma levels of ACTH and corticosterone as well as in adrenal weight. At the same time, in males born to mothers who suffered stress during the last week of pregnancy a decrease was detected in activity both of the central (hypothalamus) and peripheral (adrenal cortex) parts of this regulatory hormonal axis, analogous to that we revealed previously in the ‘stress–restress’ experimental model. It is concluded that prenatal stress modifies the sensitivity of animals to inescapable intense stress impacts, as manifested in the specific pattern of HPA axis activity after stressing.  相似文献
