ABSTRACTThis paper examines the variations in dog owners' attitudes toward, treatment of, and interactions with, animals. Based on 28 in-depth interviews with dog owners from a county in the Midwestern United States, I demonstrate that pets are an important part of many people's lives, often providing companionship, entertainment, and meaningful interactions; however, there are notable, distinct variations in how people relate to them. Pet owners typically exhibit one of three orientations toward pets: “dominionistic,” “humanistic,” or “protectionistic.” The dominionistic have relatively low regard for their pets, valuing them primarily for the uses they provide, such as protection. Those employing the humanistic orientation elevate their pets to the status of surrogate humans and value their pets primarily for the affective benefits they enjoy from their close attachments. The protectionistic have high regard for both pets and animals more generally. They view pets as valuable companions and as creatures with their own interests. This typology offers insights for understanding the source and variety of the often ambiguous and contradictory relations between people and pets. I argue that individual characteristics and experiences impact how people understand and relate to animals, in large part, because they represent exposure to different cultural messages. I suggest that these orientations represent three sets of distinct cultural logics, each with distinct histories and contemporary sources. 相似文献

Why did punishment and the use of reputation evolve in humans? According to one family of theories, they evolved to support the maintenance of cooperative group norms; according to another, they evolved to enhance personal gains from cooperation. Current behavioral data are consistent with both hypotheses (and both selection pressures could have shaped human cooperative psychology). However, these hypotheses lead to sharply divergent behavioral predictions in circumstances that have not yet been tested. Here we report results testing these rival predictions. In every test where social exchange theory and group norm maintenance theory made different predictions, subject behavior violated the predictions of group norm maintenance theory and matched those of social exchange theory. Subjects do not direct punishment toward those with reputations for norm violation per se; instead, they use reputation self-beneficially, as a cue to lower the risk that they personally will experience losses from defection. More tellingly, subjects direct their cooperative efforts preferentially towards defectors they have punished and away from those they haven’t punished; they avoid expending punitive effort on reforming defectors who only pose a risk to others. These results are not consistent with the hypothesis that the psychology of punishment evolved to uphold group norms. The circumstances in which punishment is deployed and withheld–its circuit logic–support the hypothesis that it is generated by psychological mechanisms that evolved to benefit the punisher, by allowing him to bargain for better treatment. 相似文献

Animals in the laboratory need the legally required “empty space” to meet their basic spatial requirements for postural adjustment, but they also deserve functional-structured-space for species-typical locomotor behavior and dynamic interaction with their physical environment. Primary enclosures of these animals traditionally are unfurnished, and there is no reason to believe that the biomedical research industry will change the status quo on its own accord. Rather than counting on the professional judgment of attending veterinarians, investigators, and facility administrators, the U.S. Department of Agriculture should explicitly require primary enclosures of laboratory animals to provide not only a specific volume of space, but also species-appropriate space structured for optimal use by the confined subject. 相似文献

At least 50 indigenous groups spread across lowland South America remain isolated and have only intermittent and mostly hostile interactions with the outside world. Except in emergency situations, the current policy of governments in Brazil, Colombia, and Peru towards isolated tribes is a “leave them alone” strategy, in which isolated groups are left uncontacted. However, these no-contact policies are based on the assumption that isolated populations are healthy and capable of persisting in the face of mounting external threats, and that they can maintain population viability in the long-term. Here, we test this assumption by tracking the sizes and movements of cleared horticultural areas made by 8 isolated groups over the last 10–14 years. We used deforestation data derived from remote sensing Landsat satellite sensors to identify clearings, and those were then validated and assessed with high-resolution imagery. We found only a single example of a relatively large and growing population (c. 50 cleared ha and 400 people), whereas all of the other 7 groups exhibited much smaller villages and gardens with no sizable growth through time. These results indicated that the smaller groups are critically endangered, and it prompts an urgent re-thinking of policies toward isolated populations, including plans for well-organized contacts that may help save lives and rescue isolated indigenous populations from imminent extinction. 相似文献

In this continental-scale study, we show that in major benthic and planktonic stream habitats, algal biovolume--a proxy measure of biomass--is a unimodal function of species richness (SR). The biovolume peak is observed at intermediate to high SR in the benthos but at low richness in the phytoplankton. The unimodal nature of the biomass-diversity relationship implies that a decline in algal biomass with potential harmful effects on all higher trophic levels, from invertebrates to fish, can result from either excessive species gain or species loss, both being common consequences of human-induced habitat alterations. SR frequency distributions indicate that the most frequent richness is habitat-specific and significantly higher in the benthos than in the plankton. In all studied stream environments, the most frequent SR is lower than the SR that yields the highest biovolume, probably as a result of anthropogenic influences, but always within one standard deviation from it, i.e. they are statistically indistinguishable. Background
Over time, adaptive Gaussian Hermite quadrature (QUAD) has become the preferred method for estimating generalized linear mixed models with binary outcomes. However, penalized quasi-likelihood (PQL) is still used frequently. In this work, we systematically evaluated whether matching results from PQL and QUAD indicate less bias in estimated regression coefficients and variance parameters via simulation.Methods
We performed a simulation study in which we varied the size of the data set, probability of the outcome, variance of the random effect, number of clusters and number of subjects per cluster, etc. We estimated bias in the regression coefficients, odds ratios and variance parameters as estimated via PQL and QUAD. We ascertained if similarity of estimated regression coefficients, odds ratios and variance parameters predicted less bias.Results
Overall, we found that the absolute percent bias of the odds ratio estimated via PQL or QUAD increased as the PQL- and QUAD-estimated odds ratios became more discrepant, though results varied markedly depending on the characteristics of the datasetConclusions
Given how markedly results varied depending on data set characteristics, specifying a rule above which indicated biased results proved impossible.This work suggests that comparing results from generalized linear mixed models estimated via PQL and QUAD is a worthwhile exercise for regression coefficients and variance components obtained via QUAD, in situations where PQL is known to give reasonable results. 相似文献11.

It is focused on the danger of the “red meat” consumption, and the question whether eating pungent food is good or bad for our health and finally whether the “bad luck” concept of getting several cancer types is valid or not. These three topics got and still have significant media attention. Several mechanisms are proposed as possible causes of these apparent conflicts. Using historical data from the Utah Population Database, this analysis finds significant, consistent, but small adverse mortality
effects for mothers after age 50 who had mostly sons. Examination of age-dependent effects indicates that this association
increases with mother’s age. Additionally, mothers who had mostly daughters faced mortality risks that increased with age.
Offspring sex composition did not have a significant effect on paternal mortality. Interaction analyses were conducted to
examine the effect of offspring sex composition with regard to historical period, residential location, socioeconomic status,
and childhood survival. No other interactions were found to be statistically significant. Having mostly boys remained detrimental
to maternal mortality regardless of childhood survival.

While anthropomorphizing nonhuman animals has been shown to increase identification with them and, by extension, concern for their wellbeing, little research has directly tested whether identifying with nonhuman animals is similarly associated with concern for their wellbeing. We tested hypotheses related to this premise across three cross-sectional studies. In study 1 (n = 224), we tested the hypothesis that therians—a group of people who self-identify with nonhuman animals, show greater concern for nonhuman animal rights than non-therian furries—people with a fan-like interest in media featuring anthropomorphized animal characters. In study 2 (n = 206), we further tested this hypothesis using implicit and explicit measures of identification with nonhuman animals to predict behavioral intentions to support nonhuman animal rights. In study 3 (n = 182), we tested the generalizability of our findings in a sample of undergraduate students. Taken together, the studies show that explicit, but not implicit, identification with nonhuman animals predicts greater support for their rights. The implications of these findings for research on anthropomorphism and animal rights activism are discussed, as well as the limitations of these findings and possible avenues for future research. 相似文献

Considerable controversy surrounds the use of biocides in an ever increasing range of consumer products and the possibility that their indiscriminate use might reduce biocide effectiveness and alter susceptibilities towards antibiotics. These concerns have been based largely on the isolation of resistant mutants from in vitro monoculture experiments. To date, however the emergence of biocide-resistant strains in-vivo has not been reported and a number of environmental survey studies have failed to associate biocide use with antibiotic resistance. This article gives an overview of the issues as they currently stand and reviews data generated in our laboratory over the last five years where we have used laboratory microcosms of the environment and oral cavity to better understand the possible effects of real-life biocide exposure of these high risk ecosystems. In general, whilst biocide susceptibility changes can be demonstrated in pure culture, especially for E. coli towards triclosan, it has not been possible to reproduce these effects during chronic, sublethal dosing of complex communities. We conclude from this review that whilst the incorporation of antibacterial agents into a widening sphere of personal products may not overtly impact on the patterns of microbial susceptibility observed in the environment, the precautionary principle suggests that the use of biocides should be limited to applications where clear hygienic benefits can be demonstrated. 相似文献

Previous studies of picro-dye reactions demonstrated wide variations in the binding of different dyes. Picro-Sirius Red F3BA was recommended because it colors all collagens intensely and is suitable for polarization microscopy. Recent publications on quantitative uses of this stain were surprising. To obtain further information on the chemical mechanisms of dye binding by proteins, 94 sulfonated azo dyes were tested under the conditions of the picro-Sirius Red F3BA reaction. Reaction patterns varied widely, from failure to compete successfully with picrate ions for binding sites to strong coloration of all tissue structures. Only a few dyes stained collagen, reticulum fibers and basement membranes intensely and selectively. The reactivity of dyes was determined by their molecular configuration and the nature and position of substituents. Correlation with physico-chemical data showed that dye binding is due to non-ionic interactions, i.e. van der Waals and dispersion forces and hydrophobic bonding. Coulomb forces do not impart affinity - increasing sulfonation actually decreases dye uptake - but draw dyes within reach of non-ionic sites. Bound dyes form aggregates with additional dye ions; the aggregation number can range from 2 to many powers of 10. Clearly, dye binding by proteins is not stoichiometric. 相似文献
