A total of 105 climber species were recorded and studied for their altitudinal distribution and phenology. Relatively higher percentage (54%) of deciduous species was recorded. In general, the climbers were distributed throughout the region between altitudes of 300–3500 m. However, maximum (more than 60%) species were confined either below or at around 1500 m altitude. Species richness declines gradually towards the higher altitudes, the decline was more sharp in evergreen species. The different phenological activities were usually governed by the seasonal variations in a year. Seasonality of flowering suggested the prevalence of insect pollination. Whereas, fruit types indicated equal sharing of biotic and abiotic dispersal. Study concludes, the distribution and nature of various climber species of Kumaun in Indian Central Himalaya, depends largely upon altitude and its climatic variable temperature. Whereas, the seasonality of rains plays an important role in seasonal progression of phenophases.  相似文献

Spectra on life form, leaf size, leaf persistence, flowering season, and shade tolerance of trees in different vegetation types occurring within the north-western catchment of the river Gola in Kumaun Himalaya are presented. The flora of Quercus leucotrichophora, Quercus lanuginosa and Quercus floribunda forests is phanerophytic, that of Pinus roxburghii and mixed forests therophytic. The grassland vegetation is characterized by the largest percentage of hemicryptophytes. The flora of the whole area, is therophytic. The biological spectrum for the entire Kumaun Himalaya is characterized as therohemigeophytic. Among the various altitudinal zones, the tropical has a preponderance of phanerophytes, the temperate and the alpine of hemicryptophytes.The observations on leaf size indicate that with the exception of Pinus roxburghii forest, in all vegetation types, the species with microphylls are greater in number. In this region, the vegetation expression is evergreen, although the tree flora has a considerable content of deciduous elements. In all the forests, the flowering period in most of the trees is vernal.On the basis of relative density, the greatest proportions of adult trees in the Pinus roxburghii and Quercus lanuginosa forests are shade intolerant, while in the mixed and Quercus leucotrichophora forests maximum trees are intermediate in shade tolerance. With the exception of the Pinus roxburghii forest, all the forests exhibit the dominance of trees which are shade tolerant at the seedling stage. On the basis of relative density, all forest types, except for Pinus roxburghii forest, have 74.5 to 100% trees with the potentiality of vegetative reproduction.Financial support from the Indian Space Research Organisation, Banglore and University Grants Commission, New Delhi is gratefully acknowledged.  相似文献

Phenology of high-altitude plants of Kumaun in Central Himalaya,India   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The various developmental stages of 184 species of high-altitude plants were studied during 1987 and 1988 in the Pindari glacial moraine area of Kumaun Himalaya in the Central Himalaya. The initiation of growth was synchronised with the beginning of the spring/or summer temperature rise and snowmelt. In this high-altitude zone, the peaks of various phenophases succeeded one after another over about 4 months from early June to October. It is suggested that the plants complete various growth cycles within a very short period of favourable conditions to ensure the survival of their progeny.  相似文献

为了探讨我国热带地区植物物候与气候变化的关系, 利用海南岛尖峰岭热带树木园12种热带常绿阔叶乔木植物2003-2011年物候观测资料结合同期月平均气温和降水数据, 运用积分回归分析方法, 筛选出影响海南岛12种乔木(8种本地种、4种引入种)展叶始期与开花始期的气象因素以及不同气象因素月值变化(月平均气温和月降水量)综合作用对这些树种物候期的动态影响, 最终建立积分回归-物候预测模型, 对气候变化背景下我国热带地区植物物候变化趋势进行了预测。结果表明: 海南岛12种热带常绿阔叶乔木展叶始期与开花始期均对气候变化做出较明显的响应, 几乎所有的树种展叶始期与开花始期的发生都受到气温和降水的共同影响。多数树种展叶始期受展叶前冬季及春季气温影响显著, 且在临近展叶始期的月份, 气温的影响更显著。上一年秋季月降水量对各树种开花始期的影响比其他时段显著, 这验证了降水的滞后性假说。本地种展叶始期对气候变化的响应比其开花始期对气候变化的响应更敏感, 引入种则相反。各树种展叶和开花在受气温和降水综合影响最明显的月份(假设其余11个月份月平均气温和月降水量不变), 月平均气温升高0.1 ℃、月降水量增加10 mm可使展叶始期和开花始期提前或推迟1-3天。积分回归分析方法为解释海南岛热带常绿阔叶乔木物候与气温和降水的动态关系提供了有效的途径, 基于气温和降水与物候资料建立的积分回归-物候预测模型具有对气温和降水变化影响下物候响应的解释率和预测精度高(R2≥ 0.943)的优点, 对于预测气候变化影响下的植物物候变化趋势有一定的适用性。  相似文献

The epiphytes present at about breast height on trunks of different size were studied for three major tree species in a seasonally wet forest at 2050 m altitude in the Kumaun Himalaya: Cedrus deodora, Quercus floribunda and Q. leucotrichophora. The total biomass and species number per unit trunk area, were found to increase with trunk size. It was supposed that the results indicated a succession in the type of epiphytic cover from young trunks to older trunks.The amount of loose material (plant remains and soil) per unit area of trunk increased with increasing girth. The C:N ratio in this material was initially very high on the oaks (129–197) and declined with increasing trunk size (to 73–78); the ratio was constant across girth classes in the cedar (86–87).Bryophytes produced most biomass on most trunks; next to them were lichens on the smallest trunks, and flowering plants on the largest. The number of species of epiphytes was similar on all three host species. Phenological characteristics of the tree layer of Kumaun Himalayan forests   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The phenology of tree components of natural forests occurring between 350 and 2150 m in Kumaun Himalaya is descibed. All forests had more evergreen than deciduous taxa. The degree of evergreenness increased with increasing elevation and decreasing summer dryness. For most species (including all dominants) concentrated leafdrop and simultaneous leafing occurred during the warm-dry period of the year. About half of the species showed multiple leafing.All species had a sharp flowering peak in April. Wet-season flowering was rare. Most of the species flowered synchronously. In the sal- (Shorea robusta) and pine (Pinus roxburghii) forests a single peak of fruit maturation occurred in summer, while in other forests there also was a secondary peak in autumn.Nomenclature generally follows Osmaston (1926), the authority is given where the species is mentioned first.Financial support from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, is grategully acknowledged. One of the ways to assess the impacts of climate change on plants is analysing their long-term phenological data. We studied phenological records of 18 common tree species and their 8 phenological phases, spanning 65 years (1946?2010) and covering the area of the Czech Republic. For each species and phenophase, we assessed the changes in its annual means (for detecting shifts in the timing of the event) and standard deviations (for detecting changes in duration of the phenophases). The prevailing pattern across tree species was that since around the year 1976, there has been a consistent advancement of the onset of spring phenophases (leaf unfolding and flowering) and subsequent acceleration of fruit ripening, and a delay of autumn phenophases (leaf colouring and leaf falling). The most considerable shifts in the timing of spring phenophases were displayed by early-successional short-lived tree species. The most pronounced temporal shifts were found for the beginning of seed ripening in conifers with an advancement in this phenophase of up to 2.2 days year?1 in Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris). With regards to the change in duration of the phenophases, no consistent patterns were revealed. The growing season has extended on average by 23.8 days during the last 35 years. The most considerable prolongation was found in Pedunculate Oak (Quercus robur): 31.6 days (1976?2010). Extended growing season lengths do have the potential to increase growth and seed productivity, but unequal shifts among species might alter competitive relationships within ecosystems.  相似文献

We tested if logging enhances the recruitment of tree species by comparing young tree density in areas disturbed by logging with areas unaffected by logging 6 mo after logging in two Forest Reserves in Ghana. Analysis of 46 commercial timber species showed significantly higher postlogging recruitment in felling gaps and skid trails than in areas unaffected by logging. New seedlings substantially exceeded those lost due to logging operations. Species richness was significantly greater in areas disturbed by logging.  相似文献

Aim Across all latitudes, high‐elevation tree lines represent a drastic change in the dominant plant life‐form, from upright trees to low‐stature alpine plants. Although associated with low temperatures, the physiological mechanisms controlling this boundary are still not clear. The growth‐limitation hypothesis assumes a direct low‐temperature restriction of tissue formation at otherwise sufficient photoassimilation. In order to test this hypothesis, we present a global synthesis of previously published and new data on tree carbon supply status at high‐elevation tree lines. Location Global; 13 regions between 68° N and 45° S. Methods Late‐season concentrations of non‐structural carbohydrates (NSC) in foliage and branch wood were measured at three elevations across the tree line ecotones, from upper tall forests (timber line) to the edges of aborescent tree growth (tree line). Year‐round records of ?10 cm soil temperatures were taken at the tree line. Results Despite large differences in elevation and season length, the mean growing season temperature at the tree line was similar (approximately 6.6 °C) between all sites. NSC concentrations were not depleted at any of the elevation gradients between timber line and tree line, indicating no shortage of C at the uppermost tree stands. Tested across all sites, NSC concentrations in fact significantly increased with elevation. On average, NSC increased by 18% in leaves and 26% in branch wood from the lowest to the highest stands, primarily due to higher starch concentrations rather than free sugars. Hence, these responses do not reflect osmotic adjustments to lower temperatures at the end of the growing season. Main conclusions This global data set contributes to a mechanistic understanding of tree line formation based on biological principles across climatic zones and tree genera. No evidence of C shortage was found at the high‐elevation tree line in either seasonal and non‐seasonal regions. The increasing trend of NSC concentrations with elevation is in line with the growth‐limitation hypothesis.  相似文献

Forestry managers have been searching for ways to reduce the impacts of logging on Amazonian biodiversity, but some basic factors are still not considered in native forestry operations, among them the diversity of epiphytes associated with the logged trees. Our goals in this study were to determine the floristic composition, quantify the species richness, and characterize the species diversity of the vascular epiphytic community present in three timber tree species in Acre State, Brazil. We collected and identified all epiphytes in 30 randomly selected trees ≥35 cm DBH of each of three important timber species, Tabebuia serratifolia, Manilkara inundata and Couratari macrosperma. We also documented the epiphyte diversity in 120 randomly selected trees ≥35 cm DBH of 56 other species to determine whether the three timber species have different epiphyte diversity than the tree community at large. The epiphyte samples in the three timber species showed 77 species, 13 of which were new records for the flora of Acre state. The epiphyte community in the randomly selected trees presented a total of 56 species. The timber species phorophytes hosted on average three times more epiphyte species per tree than the other 120 randomly selected trees. These results show that a substantial portion of local floristic richness can be lost during logging activity due if not properly managed by rescuing epiphytes after felling the trees. Although these epiphytes could contribute positively to forestry sustainability due to their ornamental value, increasing the economic yield per hectare, there are no local initiatives for economic use of epiphytes.  相似文献

The harvesting of non‐timber forest products (NTFP) can influence the pattern of resource allocation in plants, affecting their growth, survival, and reproduction. However, only a small number of studies have addressed the impacts of NTFP harvesting on the reproductive phenology of the exploited species. The aim of this observational study was to assess the effects of harvesting and climatic variables on the reproductive phenology of Himatanthus drasticus, a highly exploited medicinal tree from the Brazilian savanna (Cerrado). We evaluated the effects of two different debarking levels (50 and 100%) in comparison to a control (no harvesting). We performed monthly counts of the number of buds, flowers in anthesis, unripe and ripe fruits in each sampled tree (intensity index), as well as the number of trees in each phenophase (activity index), over 2 yr. We used circular statistics tools to compare the effects of each treatment on flower and fruit production and to test whether the reproductive peaks were related to climatic variables. Both the activity and intensity indexes exhibited the same patterns; flower and fruit production were lower in the control, intermediate in the 50 percent debarking group and higher in the 100 percent debarking group. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of NTFP to demonstrate an increase in reproductive activity after several years of harvesting. All phenophases were positively correlated with higher temperature and precipitation, as it is common in the Cerrado.  相似文献

A preliminary assessment of the utilization of plant species was undertaken within an Amerindian community at Kurupukari, Guyana. A total of 120 plant species of 46 plant families, covering 246 different plant uses were identified. Plant uses were divided into six utilization categories; 64 species for medicinal, 53 for technological, 43 edible, 20 for timber, 14 for construction and two species with miscellaneous uses. Of the 120 plant species, one species was recorded with five different use categories, two with four and 13 with three. A further 23 species were identified as having multiple uses. Of the 20 commercial timber species, five species were also shown to exhibit some form of non-timber product use, emphasising the under-utilization of species extraction. The dual extraction of both timber and non-timber resources from the same tree as a more effective sustainable utilization of available forest resources is also discussed.  相似文献

20世纪末以来有两个重要的变化影响着东北温带阔叶红松林资源的可持续性,一是天然林资源保护工程(下称天保工程)的实施,另一个是红松不再作为用材树种被采伐。但森林采伐后的更新造林模式并没有显著改变。以长白山腹地-露水河林业局的阔叶红松林为研究对象,利用森林资源清查(二类)和作业设计调查(三类)资料,评估了这两个重要的变化对当前的森林资源的产生影响。结果表明,天保工程的实施调减了采伐量,间接提高了森林的公顷蓄积量,整体上促进了森林资源的恢复。目前,紫椴,蒙古栎,水曲柳和春榆等占商品材总生产量94.7%(蓄积量)。与此同时,可供采伐的这4个树种年生长量却小于采伐量,而林下补植红松,却忽视阔叶树更新的经营模式势必会逐渐增加红松在阔叶红松林中的比例,使目前商品材资源不足的情况更加恶化。总的来说,天保工程促进了公益林区森林资源的可持续性,但降低了用于木材生产的商品林的面积;红松不采伐增加了红松在商品林中的比例,降低了商品林中用材树种比例和商品材的可持续生产能力,从长期看,必然导致可采伐林木资源的枯竭。据此,建议应根据森林培育的目标,选择合适的森林更新恢复模式。  相似文献

In the present study, we describe the temporal and spatial variability in recruitment, growth, and mortality rates of seedlings and saplings of two low-density neotropical tree species, Dipteryx odorata and Copaifera reticulata in Eastern Amazonia, Brazil. As both species have important timber and non-timber uses, for each species we compare regeneration parameters among different management scenarios (sites used for timber logging, non-timber product extraction, and undisturbed forests). Results suggest that both species share similar natural regeneration characteristics. These include temporally and spatially asynchronous germination, existence of individuals that have more abundant and frequent fruit production than the average of the population and a positive influence of the mother tree crown on seedling and sapling density. The management activities analyzed did not influence the regeneration parameters of both species, which suggests that timber logging the way it was performed and current rates of D. odorata seed gathering and C. reticulata tapping at the study site are not sufficiently intense to threaten species population. However, some species characteristics, such as their reproductive strategies, light-demanding syndromes, low-dispersal ranges, and high-mortality rates of seedlings make both species vulnerable to exploitation.  相似文献

A new species of the endogonaceous fungus Gigaspora, isolated from the Indian semi-arid region, is described. The fungus, named G. tuberculata, produces rusty-brown azygospores with septate subtending hypha. The azygospores bear warts all over the outer wall. The shape, size and general appearance of these spores resemble those of Scutellospora persica.Neeraj and A.K. The shea tree is among the socio-economically and environmentally most important plants in the Sudano-Sahelian region of Africa. Shea butter is internationally valued for use in pharmaceutical, cosmetic and confectionary industries. Scaling and describing phenological growth stages is of great importance in crops management. However, such phenological scale is still lacking for shea tree. To fill this gap, we documented the different growth stages of shea tree by referencing to the Biologische Bundesantalt, Bundessortenamt und Chemische Industrie (BBCH) scale. Eight of the ten principal growth stages (0–9) and 43 secondary growth stages (0–9) were described in shea tree. Among the eight principal stages, four were related to reproductive phenophases: inflorescence emergence stage (5), flowering stage (6), fruit development stage (7), and fruit maturity stage (8). The remaining four principal stages concerned vegetative phenophases and contained: bud development stage (0), leaf development stage (1), shoot development stage (3), and senescence stage (9). Observations of shea tree phenophases depicted asynchronous growth patterns with overlapping secondary growth stages of different principal stages within an individual tree canopy at the same time. The proposed phenological growth scale specific to shea tree but compatible with other crops is a valuable contribution for the implementation of crops management protocols and the standardisation of research between different laboratories.  相似文献

This paper reports on the tree structure, tree dimension relationships and woody biomass production and removal of a sub-tropical natural forest in the Mamlay watershed of the Sikkim Himalaya. The forest provides fuel, fodder and timber to four villages. Only 11 tree species were found growing in the tree stratum despite the high diversity in the stand (32 tree species). The forest shows good regeneration potential with 5474 seedlings/ha and 1776 saplings/ha, but the population structure revealed a marked paucity of trees of higher diameter classes due to removal of trees of lower diameters. Standing wood biomass of 362 Mg/ha is mainly shared by 4 dominating species in the stand. The boles are removed mainly for timber and fuel purposes and about 22 Mg/ha wood biomass was removed in between 1987–1991. Net Primary productivity of woody biomass of the forest is recorded to be 18 Mg/ha/year. 3.85 Mg/ha of annual woody biomass production was removed in the form of tree boles apart from lopping of branches.  相似文献

Aims Changes in habitat characteristics and species composition in successional gradients could determine temporal variation in phenology of second-growth forests. We evaluated phenological patterns in tree species occurring in successional forests in southern Brazil, aiming to assess community changes along succession. We tested for general patterns and phenophase seasonality of trees of forests in successional stages and for differences in occurrence, concentration, frequency and duration of phenophases.  相似文献
