A cytosolic retinoic acid-binding (RAB) protein that sediments specifically as a 2S component on sucrose density gradients was detected in the mammary glands of virgin, pregnant and lactating rats. Mammary cytosol from pregnant rats contained significantly higher concentrations of cytosolic RAB protein than did cytosol from either virgin or lactating rats. The glands of pregnant animals exhibited increased concentration of cytosolic RAB protein during the first 5 days of pregnancy, and a steady decline was observed thereafter. The concentration of cytosolic RAB protein dropped to the value observed during lactation on the day 20 of pregnancy. Moreover, throughout lactation, low concentrations of cytosolic RAB protein were maintained. Daily treatment of virgin and lactating animals with 5 micrograms of oestradiol-17 beta for 1 week increased cytosolic RAB protein to concentrations comparable with those seen in pregnant rats. Progesterone, however, did not affect the mammary cytosolic RAB protein content of virgin rats. These results suggest hormonal involvement in the regulation of cytosolic RAB protein concentration of mammary gland during differentiation.  相似文献

The movement and metabolism of vitamin A is dependent on a number of specific carrier proteins. The small intestine contains both cellular retinol-binding protein (type two) (CRBP(II], restricted to the villus-associated enterocytes, and cellular retinol-binding protein (CRBP), present primarily in supporting mesenchymal cells. The content of these proteins in the small intestine of prepartum and postpartum Sprague-Dawley rats was determined by radioimmunoassay. Levels of CRBP(II), but not CRBP, changed dramatically during this period. Total content of CRBP(II) in the small intestine rose precipitously in late pregnancy and continued to rise throughout lactation to a peak at day 21 postpartum more than 300% greater than in nulliparous, nonpregnant controls. In contrast, total small intestinal weight and CRBP content increased only approximately 100% from late pregnancy to day 21 of lactation. CRBP(II) concentration in the proximal and middle segments of small intestine (expressed on a g wet tissue, mg protein, or mg DNA basis) remained at control levels through day 17 of pregnancy, increased 50-100% in late pregnancy, then rose markedly at parturition to levels two- to threefold greater than controls. CRBP(II) concentration was then maintained at a relatively constant elevated level during the remainder of lactation, but decreased markedly after weaning, approaching control levels within 1 week. The concentrations of CRBP(II) in enterocytes isolated from the proximal two-thirds of the small intestine from rats on day 20 of pregnancy and days 1 and 16 of lactation, expressed on a mg DNA basis, were similar and approximately 60% greater than controls.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The regulation of 6-phosphofructo-1-kinase (PFK) in the epithelial cells of rat small intestine was studied during pregnancy and lactation. The total activities and activity ratios (activity at 0.5 mM fructose 6-phosphate at pH 7.0/activity at pH 8.0 (nu 0.5/V] of the partially purified mucosal PFK were found to increase initially in early pregnant rats (11-12 days of gestation) and to fall back to normal in late pregnant rats (19-20 days of gestation). These changes in enzyme activity during pregnancy were associated with similar changes in the circulating levels of progesterone. The maximal activity and activity ratio (nu 0.5/V) were increased in male and female rats injected with progesterone. An increase in the total activity and activity ratio of mucosal PFK was also obtained in lactating rats. However, the enzyme was not strongly activated by inorganic phosphate, fructose 2,6-bisphosphate or glucose 1,6-bisphosphate either in early pregnant or lactating rats. These results indicate that mucosal PFK is already present as an active form during early pregnancy and lactation. Therefore, it is suggested that female sex hormones increase the circulating levels of insulin during early pregnancy which, in turn, positively affect the activity of mucosal PFK which could be also stimulated by the increased levels of fructose 2,6-bisphosphate. The increased activity of PFK in the peak lactating rats could be possible because of an increased demand for lactate production from glucose together with the stimulation of PFK by the increased concentrations of fructose 2,6-bisphosphate which therefore increases the rate of glycolysis.  相似文献

The effect of pregnancy on lactation was studied during the third week of lactational pregnancy in postpartum pregnant rats with a delay in implantation of only 1 day (1d-LP rats). In an experimental design in which the suckling litter was prevented from consuming solid food, lactational performance was estimated by weighing the ten-pup suckling litters on days 16-21 of lactation or by measuring maternal weight loss after a nursing spell on day 21. In 1d-LP rats, food consumption as well as lactational performance was lower than it was in nonpregnant lactating rats (L rats) and pregnant-lactating rats with a normal long delay of implantation of at least 6 days (LP rats). The time spent by the pups sucking at the nipples was not different among the three groups, but the number of milk ejections was diminished in 1d-LP dams. Restriction of daily food supply during days 16 to 21 of lactation diminished lactational performance more strongly in 1d-LP rats than it did in L rats; 1d-LP rats conserved protein stores and mobilized fewer minerals than did L rats. The weight and composition of the litter in vitro were not affected by the food restriction. In pregnant-lactating rats (LP and 1d-LP rats), the number of early resorptions was increased in comparison with pregnant rats, showing that lactation can affect the earlier stages of pregnancy. It was concluded that late pregnancy does not affect nursing behaviour, but suppresses lactation by restricting maternal food intake and mobilization of maternal stores. Measurements in serum indicate a causative role for oestradiol, but not for leptin.  相似文献

We examined the presence of hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) in mammary glands of virgin, pregnant (12, 20, and 21 days), and lactating (1 and 4 days postpartum) rats. Immunohistochemistry with antibody against rat HSL revealed positive HSL in the cytoplasm of both alveolar epithelial cells and adipocytes. In virgin rats, immunoreactive HSL was observed in mammary adipocytes, whereas diffuse staining was found in the epithelial cells. Positive staining for HSL was seen in the two types of cells in pregnant and lactating rats. However, as pregnancy advanced, the staining intensity of immunoreactive HSL increased in the epithelial cells parallel to their proliferation, attaining the maximum during lactation. An immunoreactive protein of 84 kDa and a HSL mRNA of 3.3. kb were found in the rat mammary gland as in white adipose tissue. Both HSL protein and activity were lower in mammary glands from 20 and 21 day pregnant rats than from those of virgin rats, although they returned to virgin values on days 1 and 4 of lactation. Mammary gland HSL activity correlated negatively to plasma insulin levels. Immunoreactive HSL and HSL activity were found in lactating rats' milk. The observed changes indicate an active role of HSL in mammary gland lipid metabolism.  相似文献

The pattern of reflex milk ejection during suckling was investigated in anaesthetized Wistar rats at various stages of pregnancy, lactation and after weaning. Milk-ejection responses were measured using intramammary pressure recordings, and the amount of oxytocin released was estimated from log dose-response lines compiled from the mammary responses to exogenous oxytocin. The number of rats showing intramammary pressure responses to oxytocin increased on Day 22 of pregnancy (the day of parturition) and decreased at 8 days after weaning. The dose-response lines from pregnant animals were shallow, but steepened and shifted to the left during lactation and after weaning. Reflex milk-ejection responses during suckling were detectable in primigravid animals, indicating that birth of the litter and previous suckling experience are unnecessary for the immediate functioning of the reflex. Reflex milk-ejection responses improved during early lactation (such that the frequency and the amount of oxytocin released at each response were maximal at Day 10 of lactation), and subsequently declined in late lactation. Although the frequency of responses in animals 2 and 4 days after weaning was similar to that in late lactating animals, the amount of oxytocin released at each response had risen again to mid-lactation values. In animals undergoing a second pregnancy and lactation the pattern of change in the milk-ejection responses was similar to that of primiparous animals.  相似文献

Energy needs are increased during pregnancy and lactation. These increased energy needs may be met through partitioning of nutrients for energy utilization which is under hormonal control. The objective of the present studies was to determine if changes in plasma leptin occurred during pregnancy and lactation and if the changes were related to prolactin. Plasma leptin and prolactin were measured longitudinally in 9 women through pregnancy and lactation. In a second study, leptin and prolactin were measured 4 days and 28 days postpartum in 21 lactating women. Mean plasma leptin during the three trimesters of pregnancy was significantly higher (29.3+/-2.8 ng/ml) when compared to mean leptin during the three time periods of lactation (19.3+/-3.2 ng/ml) and control groups (9.8+/-1.4 ng/ml). Plasma leptin was elevated early in pregnancy and remained elevated throughout pregnancy. In the second study, the mean plasma leptin in the lactating women was significantly higher 4 days postpartum (17.3+/-3.7 ng/ml) and 28 days postpartum (19.2+/-3.9 ng/ml) when compared to controls (11.6+/-1.2 ng/ml). Prolactin in the control subjects (24+/-4 ng/ml) was significantly lower than in the pregnant (202+/-16 ng/ml) and lactating (108+/-26 ng/ml) groups. Similar observations were made in the second study (controls 20+/-2 ng/ml; lactation 28 days 159+/-21 ng/ml). Leptin during lactation was lower than in pregnancy but higher than control subjects. Regression analysis suggested that BMI and prolactin can be used as predictors of leptin in pregnancy and lactation. The increase in leptin and prolactin early in pregnancy suggests an association between the two hormones. Results of the present studies and research done by other investigators presents a strong role for leptin during pregnancy and lactation. Leptin is regulated by factors other than adiposity especially in reproductive women leading to our hypothesis that there are leptin and prolactin mediated effects on substrates used for energy utilization during pregnancy and lactation.  相似文献

An experiment was carried out to study the glucose kinetics of crossbred Holstein cattle feeding on either hay or 5% urea treated rice straw during late pregnancy (21 days prepartum) and early lactation (30 days postpartum). In all 16 pregnant heifers (23–25 months of age) were selected for the experiments, including eight animals of two breed types, Holstein Friesian×Red Sindhi (50:50=50% HF) and Holstein Friesian×Red Sindhi (87.5:12.5=87.5% HF). They were divided into four groups of four animals each. Animals from the same breed type in each group were fed with either rice straw treated with 5% urea or pangola hay (Digitaria decumbens) as the source of roughage throughout the experiments. The glucose turnover rate in both types of crossbred Holstein cattle was determined using a continuous infusion of [U-14C] and 3-[3H]glucose during late pregnancy and early lactation. Total glucose entry and utilization rates increased significantly during lactation for all groups. Recycling of [C]glucose was, approximately, 20% in both crossbred cattle fed either hay or urea treated rice straw and was unaffected by the stage of late pregnancy or early lactation. Comparing 50 and 87.5% HF animals, arterial plasma glucose concentrations were slightly higher during pregnant periods but significantly higher in lactating periods in 50% HF animals. The ratio of specific radioactivity of arterial blood bicarbonate relative to that of arterial blood [14C]glucose in the lactating period, significantly decreased in 50% HF animals fed either urea treated rice straw or hay. An increase in udder blood flow during early lactation was significantly higher in 87.5% HF animals than in 50% HF animals. The uptake, arteriovenous differences and extraction ratio for glucose across the udder, significantly increased in the lactating period for all crossbred animals. Glucose uptake by the udder of 87.5% HF animals accounted for 65% of the total glucose turnover rate compared to a value of 46% in the lactating 50% HF animals. It can be concluded that both crossbred cattle fed either urea treated rice straw or hay exhibit the same body glucose turnover rate. The 87.5% HF animal has the genetic potential for a high milk yield and has high body and udder glucose metabolisms compared with 50% HF animals.  相似文献

The changes in intestinal disaccharidase activities in pregnancy and lactation could be explained as a result of an adaptation to the energy demands of each reproductive stage. To examine these changes, disaccharidase activities (lactase, sucrase, maltase, and trehalase) were measured in the jejunum and ileum of virgin, pregnant and lactating Wistar rats. Minor changes in disaccharidase activities were observed in pregnancy, whereas an increase of disaccharidase activities per small intestine length normalized to body mass was observed in lactation.  相似文献

The sizes of the poly(A) tracts associated with rat mammary RNA were determined at several time points in the lactation cycle. The poly(A) tracts in the lactating gland displayed two predominant size class peaks at 80-85 and 45-47 residues. The 9S whey protein mRNA and the 15S casein mRNA purified from the 12 day lactating mammary gland both contained poly(A) tracts displaying a similar size distribution. The 45 residue tracts were a characteristic of lactation; they were not found at 8 days of pregnancy and only small amounts of these shorter poly(A) tracts were found in the 16 day pregnant gland. The poly(A) tracts of the involuted gland displayed the same size characteristics as those of late pregnancy. At all the developmental stages that were examined, the fraction of 45 residue poly(A) tracts was always proportional to the total poly(A) content of the mammary cells.  相似文献

Summary Changes in mammary gland tubulin were studied immunocytochemically during transition from late pregnancy to lactation. Indirect immunofluorescence was used to localize tubulin in mammary glands from late pregnant, early lactating and peak lactating guinea pigs. Whole rabbit antiserum against guinea pig brain tubulin and affinity-purified antibody indicated increases in alveolar cell tubulin content from late pregnancy through peak lactation coincident with the development of lactation. Only alveolar cells displayed high, specific fluorescence or underwent a developmental increase. Tubulin was concentrated apically, in association with secretory structures. In a second study comparing mammary tissues from 18 days pregnant and 10 days lactating rats, EM immunogold was used with three commercial antitubulins ranging from a rabbit polyclonal antiserum against chick brain MTs to a monoclonal mouse anti-alpha tubulin. Gold particle counts indicated 2- to 5- fold tubulin increases in alveolar cells with lactation and development of an apicobasal (high apical) tubulin gradient. Variations among the three anti-tubulins is discussed. The results confirmed previous observations of whole gland tubulin increases based on colchicine binding assays and localized the site of the increase primarily in alveolar cells.Abbreviations EM electron microscope-(ic) - GAM goat anti-mouse - GAR goat anti-rabbit - Ig immunoglobulin - MC monoclonal - MT microtubule - PAGE polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis - PIPES 1,4-piperazine diethane sulfonic acid - PBS phosphate buffered saline - PC polyclonal - Rb rabbit - SDS sodium dodecyl sulfate Dedicated to Professor Stuart Patton on the occasion of his 70th birthday.  相似文献

We examined the effects of pregnancy and lactation on mucosal growth and the numbers and affinity of gastrin receptors in the oxyntic gland mucosa in rats and compared these with changes in serum gastrin levels and food consumption. Gastric mucosal DNA, RNA, and protein contents were significantly increased during lactation. These changes were not observed in either pregnant or nonlactating rats which had given birth at the same time as the lactating animals. The gastrin-binding capacity of a membrane fraction of the oxyntic mucosa was also increased at the corresponding periods in lactating rats (Days 7, 15, 20). Scatchard plot analysis revealed that the number of gastrin receptors was significantly increased without any change in affinity. Food consumption and levels of serum gastrin remained unaltered in pregnant and non-lactating rats compared to virgin controls, but were significantly increased in lactating rats. Increased serum gastrin levels and gastrin binding capacities in lactating rats (Day 15) were abolished by preventing increased food consumption by means of pair feeding. The results demonstrate that the number of gastrin receptors in the oxyntic mucosa increases during lactation in rats. This increase is probably due to hypergastrinemia caused by increased food intake. The increased number of gastrin receptors may be involved in the mechanism of hypertrophic responses of the gastric mucosa in lactating rats.  相似文献

It is known that at the moment of delivery immediate lost of conceptus (main site of glucose disposal in late pregnancy) is not able to disturb glucose homeostasis in early lactating mothers. However, the mechanism by which this adaptation takes place in early lactation is still unknown. Most studies concerning insulin sensitivity in lactating rats were carried out at 11-13 days postpartum and did not describe functional changes in insulin response in early lactation. Here we show that lactation hypersensitivity to insulin is observed as early as 3 days after delivery (L3). We show that the oxidative soleus muscle displays a transient increased maximal insulin-induced glucose uptake and CO2 production, which is temporally limited to L3. Response of soleus muscle was accompanied by an increase in glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) content at L3. This adaptive response was not detected in the glycolytic plantaris muscle, which displayed lower content of GLUT4. We also found that soleus muscle from early lactating rats have higher insulin receptor expression and tyrosine phosphorylation. Downstream steps of insulin signaling pathway; e.g., insulin receptor substrate 2 tyrosine phosphorylation and its association with phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase were also upregulated in soleus muscle. In parallel, protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B expression, a negative regulator of insulin signal, was reduced. Importantly, all of these molecular alterations were time limited to L3 and were not observed in plantaris muscle. These results suggest that improved insulin action in oxidative, but not in glycolytic muscle might contribute to achievement of glucose homeostasis postpartum.  相似文献

Brown adipose tissue iodothyronine 5'-deiodinase activity is significantly lower in 17-day pregnant rats compared with virgin controls and remains low during late pregnancy and lactation. It fully recovers with abrupt weaning, but only partially with spontaneous weaning. Even though this profile of changes is remarkably in step with the known pattern of modifications in brown fat thermogenesis during the breeding cycle, the lowered iodothyronine 5'-deiodinase activity appearing between days 15 and 17 of pregnancy occurs earlier than the reduction in brown adipose tissue thermogenesis. Brown fat 3,3',5-tri-iodothyronine content is also reduced in late pregnant, early and mid-lactating rats, most probably as a consequence of the lowered 5'-deiodination of thyroxine in situ. Acute insulin treatment increases brown fat iodothyronine 5'-deiodinase activity in virgin animals as well as in late-pregnant and lactating rats, despite the lowered basal enzyme activity levels in the latter groups. Thus an impaired response to insulin in brown fat does not appear to be a factor leading to the lowered iodothyronine 5'-deiodinase activity during late pregnancy and lactation.  相似文献

Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) is expressed in hypothalamic magnocellular neurons. High co-localization rates of SHBG with oxytocin have been observed in the hypothalamus, indicating that SHBG plays a role in pregnancy, parturition and lactation. Further studies have shown that hypothalamic SHBG expression is malleable to changing steroid conditions. In this study, we have examined SHBG levels in the supraoptic and paraventricular hypothalamic nuclei and in the posterior pituitary lobe of late pregnant, parturient and early lactating rats by IN SITU hybridization, immunocytochemistry, and ELISA. Immunocytochemical and biochemical analysis showed that the SHBG levels increased during late pregnancy in hypothalamic nuclei. During parturition, SHBG levels fell in the magnocellular nuclei but increased in the posterior pituitary lobe. SHBG levels increase again during lactation. At day six of lactation, there was no significant difference in SHBG levels compared to normal cycling female rats, which served as control in this study. IN SITU hybridization showed increased SHBG mRNA signal during late pregnancy. The highest SHBG expression was observed during parturition. Our data indicate that hypothalamic SHBG expression changes during pregnancy, parturition and lactation, parallel to ovarian steroid and co-localized OT levels. This may in part be linked to known steroid actions on synthesis and secretion of magnocellular hypothalamic peptide hormones, important for the control of parturition and lactation.  相似文献

Short and long term effects of malnutrition on the small intestine, applied to the rat in uterus and lactation, have been studied. Malnutrition was induced by feeding the pregnant rats on 14 g daily during pregnancy and 21 g during lactation. In the pups (0, 15, 30, 90 and 150 days old), body weight and wet and dry weight and length of small intestine were measured. At 2.5-3 months of age, food transformation efficiency was studied, at 3 and 5 months of age in vivo intestinal absorption of D-glucose (11 mM) was measured. The results indicate a significant decrease in intestinal morphometric parameters in malnourished animals from birth to the age of 5 months. At the age of 3 months both food transformation efficiency and in vivo absorption of glucose were significantly higher in early undernourished animals, whereas at 5 months, glucose absorption was significantly higher in control. It can thus be concluded that early malnutrition altered the small intestine development and functionality and that total recovery did not occur after 4 months on a normal diet.  相似文献

1. The activity of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (EC 6.4.1.2) in extracts of freeze-clamped liver samples from fed or 24 h-starved virgin, pregnant, lactating and weaned rats was measured (i) immediately after preparation of extracts (;I activity'), (ii) after incubation of extracts with partially purified preparations of either rabbit muscle protein phosphatase 1 [Antoniw, Nimmo, Yeaman & Cohen (1977) Biochem. J.162, 423-433] or rabbit liver phosphatase [Brandt, Capulong & Lee (1975) J. Biol. Chem.250, 8038-8044] (;A activity') and (iii) after incubation with 20mm-potassium citrate before or after incubation with phosphatases (;C activity'). 2. Incubation of liver extracts at 30 degrees C without any additions resulted in activation of acetyl-CoA carboxylase that was shown to be due to dephosphorylation of the enzyme by endogenous protein phosphatase activity. This latter activity was not stimulated by Ca(2+) and/or Mg(2+) but was stimulated by 1 mm-Mn(2+). Incubation of extracts with either of the partially purified phosphatases (0.2-0.5 unit) resulted in faster dephosphorylation and activation. The activity achieved after incubation with either of the exogenously added phosphatases was similar. 3. The A and C activities increased during late pregnancy, were lower than in the virgin rat liver during early lactation and increased by 2-fold in liver of mid-lactating rats. Weaning of mid-lactating rats for 24 h resulted in no change in A and C activities but after 48 h weaning they were significantly lower than those in livers from suckled mothers. 4. The I activity followed a similar pattern of changes as the A and C activities during pregnancy and lactation such that, although the I/A and I/C activity ratios tended to be lower during late pregnancy and early lactation, there were no significant changes in I/A and I/C ratios between lactating and virgin animals. However, these ratios were significantly higher in liver from fed 24 h-weaned animals. 5. Starvation (24 h) resulted in a marked decrease in I activity for all animals studied except early-lactating rats. This was due to a combination of a decrease in the concentration of acetyl-CoA carboxylase in liver of starved animals (A and C activities) and a decrease in the fraction of the enzyme in the active form (lower I/C and I/A ratios). The relative importance of the two forms of regulation in mediating the starvation-induced fall in I activity was about equal in livers of virgin, pregnant and lactating animals. However, the decrease in I/A and I/C ratios was of dominating importance in livers of weaned animals. The A/C activity ratios were the same for livers from all animals studied. 6. The maximal activity of fatty acid synthase was also measured in livers and was highly and positively correlated with the A and C activities of acetyl-CoA carboxylase, suggesting that the concentrations of the two enzymes in the liver were controlled coordinately. 7. It is suggested that the lack of correlation between plasma insulin levels and rates of lipogenesis in the transition from the virgin to the lactating state may be explained by different effects of insulin and prolactin on the concentration of acetyl-CoA carboxylase in the liver and on the fraction of the enzyme in the active form.  相似文献

The effects of lactation stage and hormonal profile on the quality and quantity of oocytes and the gonadotrophic sensitivity of granulosa cells (GC) from small antral follicles obtained by sequential aspirations from ovaries of high producing dairy cows were examined. Cows in late lactation (263(+/- 60) days postpartum) and 98(+/- 16) days pregnant in positive energy balance (EB) showed no significant changes in plasma concentrations of estradiol, progesterone, insulin, IGF1 or expression of mRNA of the FSH receptor in GC from small antral follicles during the 49 days experimental period. There were no changes in the number and quality of oocytes obtained from each aspiration. In cows in early lactation (72.8 +/- 6 days postpartum), plasma insulin concentrations increased and were positively correlated with plasma estradiol concentration. Due to the sequential aspirations progesterone blood concentrations were low in early lactation cows. Expression of mRNA of the FSH receptor increased in GC from small antral follicles of early lactation cows together with the number of oocytes obtained with aspiration sessions. No differences were found in morphological quality or function between oocytes obtained from small antral follicles from cows in early or late lactation. In early, but not late lactation, the number of oocytes was correlated with both insulin and E2 plasma concentrations. Improved EB and sensitivity of GC to FSH may be involved in oocyte recruitment in early lactation.  相似文献

Reproduction, especially lactation, is associated with major metabolic adaptive changes. In this study, we investigated the metabolic changes and the roles of leptin during different periods of reproduction in primiparous Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii). Energy intake, thermogenic capacity and serum leptin levels were examined in non-reproductive, mid pregnant, late pregnant, early lactating and peak lactating voles. Voles increased body mass by nearly 70% during late pregnancy compared to the non-breeding controls. The increase in body mass was mainly due to the increase in body fat mass which increased by 56%, and the growth of the reproductive tissues and digestive organs. Lactating voles decreased body fat by nearly 27% at peak lactation compared to the controls, and 53% compared to late pregnant voles. At the same time they increased food intake significantly. Uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) content in brown adipose tissue (BAT) decreased significantly at peak lactation. Serum leptin increased significantly in the mid pregnancy, at a time when there was no increase in body fat, and remained at this high level in late pregnancy. Leptin levels decreased after parturition and reached a nadir at peak lactation. Serum leptin was negatively correlated with energy intake during lactation, but not during pregnancy. These data suggest that Brandt's voles adjust energy intake, thermogenic capacity and body reserves to match the high energy demands for reproduction. Hyperleptinemia, without decreased energy intake suggests a state of leptin resistance during pregnancy, and hypoleptinemia during lactation might act as a signal to stimulate energy intake.  相似文献

Studies on the maternal transfer of photoperiodic information in mammals indicate that the daily photoperiod perceived by the mother during the gestation-lactation period is communicated to the fetus either through the placenta or via the milk. However, the impact of photoperiodic exposures during gestation and lactation on the maternal pineal and reproductive physiology has not been reported for any tropical rodent. The exposure of pregnant female Indian palm squirrels (Funambulus pennanti) to constant light (24 h light:0 h dark), constant dark (0 h light:24 h dark), long daylength (14 h light:10 h dark) or short daylength (10 h light:14 h dark) during early gestation (< 30 days) resulted in the resorption of pregnancy, while during late gestation (> 30 days), it did not interfere with the maintenance of pregnancy. Alterations in photoperiodic condition during late gestation and lactation altered the postpartum recovery process. Pineal gland activity, as assessed by pineal mass, protein content and plasma melatonin, was lowest during the breeding phase, but increased gradually after parturition until the next breeding phase. During gestation and lactation, constant light, long daylength and short daylength conditions were less effective, while constant dark condition had a profound effect in depressing pineal gland activity, which subsequently advanced postpartum recovery. Hence, lactating females under constant darkness prepare themselves for next mating much earlier than females under natural daylength (12 h light:12 h dark) conditions. Therefore, photoperiodic information, mediated via the pineal gland, may be important for maintaining gestation physiology as well as postpartum recovery in female rodents.  相似文献
