1. Recreational angling activities in wild populations of Atlantic salmon may induce a selection pressure towards a reduction in body size and length if the angling season coincides with the return of the largest sea age fish class. 2. Using estimates of heritability for growth traits and estimates of the selection pressure from angling operating on growth, we predicted the response to selection expected to occur in a wild population of Atlantic salmon. 3. The dataset used here comprised individuals from two consecutive generations (parents and offspring) from the River Bidasoa (NW Spain). Offspring were assigned to parents using six highly polymorphic microsatellite loci. Use of restricted maximum likelihood methodology and the animal model allowed us to estimate the heritability for body length and body weight as well as their genetic correlation. 4. Estimated heritabilities (0.32 ± 0.12 for length and 0.32 ± 0.11 for weight) and selection pressure caused by angling were used to obtain predictions of response to selection because of angling. Our results suggested a decline of 1.9 mm in body length and 103.3 g in body weight per generation because of angling pressure. 5. The results derived from this study suggest that the angling season should be annually delayed in order to avoid selective angling of the multi‐year class and further reductions in body weight and length.  相似文献

 The major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) regions of mice, rats, and humans all contain a pair of related genes, TAP1 and TAP2, which encode members of a large superfamily of proteins of similar structure and function. A functional TAP1/TAP2 heterodimer is probably required for efficient presentation of antigens to CD8+ T cells. This heterodimer resides in the membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum, and transports peptides from the cytoplasm into the endoplasmic reticulum lumen for binding to Mhc class I molecules. The TAP transporter demonstrates specificity for both peptide sequence and length, and in rats, allelic variation in the sequence of the transporter molecules results in differential ability to transport particular peptides. Here we report two expressed Sasa-TAP2 loci, both of which are polymorphic, as well as an expressed Sasa-TAP1 locus from Atlantic salmon. Laboratory-reared colonies of the bryozoans Fredericella sultana and Plumatella fungosa were placed upstream of 2 fish farms endemic for salmonid proliferative kidney disease (PKD) to assess rates of infection of bryozoans by Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae, the causative agent of PKD. Colonies were deployed in the field for 8 trial periods of 2 wk each throughout the summer of 2001. Following each trial, bryozoan colonies were maintained in laboratory culture for 28 d and were regularly monitored for infection by searching for sac stages of T. bryosalmonae. Infections were never identified by observations of sac stages, however positive PCR results and sequencing of cultured material confirmed that cryptic infections were present in colonies of both species deployed at one site. The possibility that PCR results reflected contamination of surfaces of bryozoans can be excluded, given the short period of spore viability of T. bryosalmonae. Highest rates of infection occurred when 4 of 23 colonies of F. sultana and 1 of 12 colonies of P. fungosa were infected during the period 10 to 24 July. No infections were detected from mid-August to late October at this site. None of the colonies at the other site became infected throughout the period of study. Our data provide the first estimates of infection rates of bryozoans by T. bryosalmonae. Additionally, they provide evidence that a cryptic stage can be maintained within bryozoan hosts for a period of 4 to 6 wk.  相似文献

1. The space use of central-place foragers, animals that forage from and return to a single central place such as a nest, burrow or sleeping site, is well documented. Limited data, however, exist for multiple central-place foragers that alternate among several central places. 2. The conventional view of stream-dwelling salmonids suggests that they conform to the central-place territorial model (CPTM) by (i) attacking prey and intruders from one primary foraging station, and defending (ii) small (iii) exclusive areas that (iv) increase with body size. 3. Recent studies suggest greater variability in salmonid space-use than would be expected by the CPTM, but tend to focus on the time allocated towards different activities rather than their distribution in space, especially for young-of-the-year (YOY) fish that are hard to tag and monitor in the wild. 4. In this study, the validity of CPTM was tested by mapping the daily space use of 50 YOY Atlantic salmon in a natural stream via repeated observations of tagged fish in diverse habitats, and by comparing these to earlier estimates of territory use in YOY salmonids. 5. The 50 YOY Atlantic salmon were multiple central-place foragers. All fish visited more than one foraging station (median = 12.5 stations), visited most stations (68.5%) repeatedly, showed limited fidelity to a particular station and typically attacked prey only while holding a position at a station. 6. The multiple central-place territories of the 50 fish were large (mean = 0.932 m(2)) compared to earlier territory size estimates (mean = 0.107 m(2)) for salmonids of similar size and, surprisingly, did not increase with body size. Focal fish attacked intruders from similar distances as reported earlier for much smaller territories, suggesting that large territories are less exclusively defended at any given time. 7. Overall, this study provides a new view on foraging and territoriality in stream salmonids, and on the small but diverse literature on multiple central-place foragers. Further studies, however, are needed to clarify the evolutionary benefits and population consequences of multiple central-place space-use in mobile animals.  相似文献

Differences in sperm metabolism and morphology between wild and non‐local farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were assessed by measuring metabolic enzyme activities and length of sperm flagella. No differences were observed between wild and farmed S. salar sperm with regards to cell counts or any of the biochemical variables assessed. Flagella of sperm cells were significantly longer in wild than farmed S. salar; however, this did not result in higher energy levels or different fertilization rates.  相似文献

Ulcerations of the skin associated with haemorrhagic petechiae of liver and kidneys, were the main signs of disease affecting salmon and brown trout in Norway. A death rate of 15–20% was estimated for the 5 month period of mid-March-August, although mortalities occurred throughout the year. Bacteriological examinations, involving 36 isolates, suggested the causual organism to be a Pasteurella although the DNA homology examination gave a G.C. ratio of 55.6 % which is high for Pasteurella as a group.  相似文献

Proliferative gill inflammation (PGI) causes significant losses in farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. in Norway, especially during the first months following seawater transfer. The aetiology is apparently multifactorial, including infection with chlamydia-like bacteria and Atlantic salmon paramyxovirus (ASPV). In the present study, gills from diseased fish from 3 farms on the western coast of Norway were sampled. The pathological changes were briefly described and the aetiological significance of ASPV studied by immunofluorescent staining of cryosections and by immunohistochemistry on sections of formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissue. The pathological changes were macroscopically characterized by palour of the gills, and histologically by inflammation, circulatory disturbances, cell death and epithelial cell proliferation. ASPV was demonstrated in fish from all farms studied, as immunostaining consistent with ASPV was obtained in lamellar epithelial and endothelial cells of pathologically altered tissues. It is concluded that ASPV is at least a contributing cause of PGI. As far as we know, this is the first demonstration of fish disease related to infection with a paramyxovirus.  相似文献

Migratory behaviour at spawning of wild and newly-escaped farmed Atlantic salmon was analysed by radio telemetry in the River Alta, North Norway. Spawning areas were located by aerial surveys. Farmed females moved significantly more than wild females ( P <0.01). There was no such difference between the two groups of males. About 83% of the wild fish stayed within identified spawning areas for 1 day or longer. The corresponding figure for farmed salmon was only 43% ( P <0.05). Wild salmon stayed 8.1 days inside spawning areas and farmed salmon 5.2 days. The present results suggest that escaped farmed salmon had reduced spawning success compared with wild fish.  相似文献

A lymphosarcoma that appeared to be of thymic origin and of lymphoblastic type was found in a 3.5-yr-old Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). The fish was from a population of 60 broodfish maintained at a research fish laboratory. A large tumor mass was found under the left operculum. Small tumor nodules were found on the swim bladder and in the abdominal adipose tissue. The location of this neoplasm differed from those of previously described tumors in this fish species.  相似文献

A study was instigated to investigate the histopathological and clinical pathological lesions associated with a naturally occurring pancreas disease (PD) outbreak in farmed Atlantic salmon. An attempt was made to reduce the severity of PD and associated lesions by altering the antioxidative and peroxidative substrates in the diets. The results do not support the hypothesis that PD leads to a vitamin E deficiency which induces a myopathy. PD was not associated with a reduction in tissue vitamin E concentrations. Despite high tissue vitamin E concentrations, pancreatic lesions and cardiac and skeletal myopathy occurred amiost simultaneously. Severe myopathy appeared to be associated with high mortality. Dietary vitamin E concentrations > 500 mg/kg did not increase plasma and muscle vitamin E concentrations, which appear to be saturated. Liver concentrations were also high. However, differing concentrations of dietary vitamin E and fat were associated with differing mortality rates.  相似文献

Light and transmission electron microscopy of the liver of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) reveals a tubular arrangement of parenchymal cells, with biliary passages typically located at the center of tubules. Hepatocytes generally contain a single nucleus surrounded by a cuff of rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER), with many round to elongate mitochondria associated with the perinuclear RER. Whereas glycogen deposits are common and usually lie at the cell periphery, parenchymal cells seldom contain lipid droplets. Golgi complexes and heterogeneous dense bodies also occur in many hepatocytes, often in close proximity to bile canaliculi. Numerous microvilli from hepatocytes extend into the subendothelial space of Disse, which is also the location of stellate fat-storing cells. Interhepatocytic macrophages, sometimes containing prominent phagolysosomes and residual bodies, are common in the liver. The intrahepatic biliary system consists of intercellular canaliculi, bile pre-ductules, ductules, and ducts. In contrast to some other teleosts, the liver of the Atlantic salmon contains no intracellular bile canaliculi or Kupffer cells. The hepatic endothelium, arterioles, and perivenous regions are also described.  相似文献

Background

Over recent decades jellyfish have caused fish kill events and recurrent gill problems in marine-farmed salmonids. Common jellyfish (Aurelia spp.) are among the most cosmopolitan jellyfish species in the oceans, with populations increasing in many coastal areas. The negative interaction between jellyfish and fish in aquaculture remains a poorly studied area of science. Thus, a recent fish mortality event in Ireland, involving Aurelia aurita, spurred an investigation into the effects of this jellyfish on marine-farmed salmon.

Methodology/Principal Findings

To address the in vivo impact of the common jellyfish (A. aurita) on salmonids, we exposed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts to macerated A. aurita for 10 hrs under experimental challenge. Gill tissues of control and experimental treatment groups were scored with a system that rated the damage between 0 and 21 using a range of primary and secondary parameters. Our results revealed that A. aurita rapidly and extensively damaged the gills of S. salar, with the pathogenesis of the disorder progressing even after the jellyfish were removed. After only 2 hrs of exposure, significant multi-focal damage to gill tissues was apparent. The nature and extent of the damage increased up to 48 hrs from the start of the challenge. Although the gills remained extensively damaged at 3 wks from the start of the challenge trial, shortening of the gill lamellae and organisation of the cells indicated an attempt to repair the damage suffered.

Conclusions

Our findings clearly demonstrate that A. aurita can cause severe gill problems in marine-farmed fish. With aquaculture predicted to expand worldwide and evidence suggesting that jellyfish populations are increasing in some areas, this threat to aquaculture is of rising concern as significant losses due to jellyfish could be expected to increase in the future.  相似文献

This study describes a purification protocol of salmon fibrinogen that gives a consumable and highly clottable fibrinogen. Some characteristics of salmon and human fibrinogen are compared. Fibrinogen was purified from barium sulphate adsorbed plasma of Atlantic salmon, using two steps of 25% ammonium sulphate precipitation followed by ultrafiltration. The clottability of the purified salmon fibrinogen was 91%. The Aalpha chains of salmon fibrinogen were heterogeneous with a molecular mass of 90-110 kDa, compared to approximately 67 kDa of human fibrinogen Aalpha chains. The Bbeta and gamma chains of salmon and human fibrinogen had molecular masses of approximately 55 and 50 kDa, respectively. Western blotting revealed that polyclonal rabbit anti-human fibrinogen antibodies had affinity for the gamma chains of salmon fibrinogen, making it possible to study factor XIII activity in purified salmon fibrinogen. Cross-linking of either gamma-gamma or gamma-alpha chains was not detected upon incubation of the purified fibrinogen with thrombin and calcium alone, but was detected when clotting was performed in plasma indicating absence of factor XIII activity in the purified product.  相似文献

Leiomyosarcoma with associated retrovirus were found in North America for the first time in adult Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) held in a quarantine facility at the North Attleboro National Fish Hatchery (NANFH), Massachusetts, USA. The fish had been collected as age 1-2 yr animals from the Pleasant River, Maine, and were to be used as brood stock in a population augmentation program for that river. Neoplastic disease was observed at NANFH initially in older (age 4 yr) fish, followed by age 3 yr fish. Disease was not observed in age 2 yr fish. The mortality pattern was chronic.  相似文献

A microsatellite linkage map for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
A linkage map of the Atlantic salmon is described here consisting of 15 linkage groups containing 50 microsatellite loci with a 14 additional unlinked markers (including three allozymes). The map shows the largest sex-specific recombination rate differences so far found in any vertebrate species (3.92:1 female:male). Homologies with previous linkage mapping studies of Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout are described. An in silico search of the Genbank database carried out using the microsatellites used in the mapping process identified significant matches between the flanking regions of the microsatellite SS11 and the calcium-binding mitochondrial carrier protein, 'Aralar1'.  相似文献

Using data from wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar returning to spawn in seven Scottish rivers, we developed a model of fecundity based on individual body size and key developmental traits. We used a novel approach to model selection which maximises predictive accuracy for application to target river stocks to select the best from a suite of Bayesian hierarchical models. This approach aims to ensure the optimal model within the candidate set includes covariates that best predict out-of-sample data to estimate fecundity in areas where no direct observations are available. In addition to body size, the final model included the developmental characteristics of age at smolting and years spent at sea. Using two independent long-term monitoring datasets, the consequences of ignoring these characteristics was revealed by comparing predictions from the best model with models that omitted them.  相似文献
