The Australian lizard, Egernia striolata, can distinguish its own scats from those of unfamiliar conspecific individuals. This appears to be unrelated to diet, because there is no difference in the response to scats from unfamiliar lizards fed on diets that are the same or different from the test lizard. The signal that induces the response is not a visual or tactile property of scat structure, because test lizards respond equally to crushed and intact scats. We suggest that a pheromone is secreted onto the scat as it is produced. Water solutions of scats did not contain signal components that allowed lizards to distinguish their own scats from others. However, solutions of scats in dichloromethane (DCM) retained unique characteristics, and test lizards responded more strongly to the solution from scats of an unfamiliar lizard that to the solution from their own scats. Further fractionation of the DCM solution in pentane and in methanol led to loss of the unique signals needed for individual recognition, but those were restored when the pentane and methanol fractions were recombined. We infer that these lizards can distinguish between scats of different individuals on the basis of signals they receive from a complex combination of chemicals. Group living often requires strong levels of communication between individuals. This communication is usually studied in the context of visual or auditory communication. However, chemical communication is the most widely used form of communication. We examined the role of chemical communication in mediating social decisions in a group‐living lizard, Egernia stokesii. Specifically, we examined the extent to which scat‐piling, a behaviour by which individuals deposit scat in a communal area, affected the refuge choice of individual E. stokesii. To achieve this, we examined individual refuge choice in response to scat piles or single scats and against two types of scat stimuli, one being their own scat and the other being scat belonging to an unrelated and unfamiliar conspecific. We show that lizards behave differently when presented with a scat pile compared with a single scat, and whether the scat stimulus was their own or sourced from an unfamiliar conspecific. When scats were in piles, individuals spent more time inspecting, more time in, and more often chose the treatment refuge as their final refuge choice, at a trial’s end, when the treatment was their own scat compared with when the treatment was the refuge with the unfamiliar scat. In contrast, for individual scat treatments, individuals spent more time inspecting and more often ended up in the treatment refuge with an unfamiliar scat compared with when the treatment was their own scat. These results suggest that individuals are responding to information contained within multiple components of the scats – both their volume and their source. These results have implications for understanding how social aggregations are maintained within squamates, where sociality has evolved independently from other vertebrate lineages.  相似文献

The ability to discriminate kin from nonkin is critical forthe evolution of kin-based sociality. Black rock skinks, Egerniasaxatilis, are viviparous lizards that typically live in "nuclearfamilies" consisting of an adult male, adult female, and oneor more cohorts of juveniles. Laboratory trials showed thatjuvenile lizards can discriminate between the scent of adultsfrom their own social group versus that of unfamiliar adults.Experiments in which we translocated individuals among familygroups revealed that this discriminatory ability was based onfamiliarity with other individuals rather than genetic relatedness. For example, neither "fostered" juveniles nor their mothersdisplayed any scent-based kin discrimination when brought togetherafter 2 months' separation. Thus, unlike the closely related(and also social) Egernia striolata, black rock skinks basekin discrimination on familiarity rather than genotypic similarity.  相似文献

Aim To compare patterns of potential and realized dispersal in ecologically similar and phylogenetically related amphidromous shrimps (Atyidae) in continental and island‐dominated landscapes. Location Eastern Australia and the Caribbean region. Methods Population genetic and phylogeographic analyses of mitochondrial DNA data for Australatya striolata from eastern Australia (a continental landscape) and Atya scabra from the Caribbean (an island‐dominated landscape). Results Australatya striolata contained two highly divergent genetic lineages in eastern Australia, corresponding to the disjunct northern and southern populations, respectively. These lineages probably represent allopatric cryptic species, both of which were found to have genetically homogeneous population structures within their regions of occurrence. Atya scabra was genetically homogeneous throughout the Caribbean. Recent population expansions were detected for Atya scabra in the Caribbean, but not for northern or southern Australatya striolata. Main conclusions The findings of this study are consistent with previously reported patterns of genetic population structure in amphidromous species in both continental and island‐dominated landscapes, suggesting that potential for widespread dispersal is typically matched by realized patterns of panmixia. We therefore raise the hypothesis that landscape setting (i.e. continent or island‐dominated) does not influence dispersal patterns in amphidromous species. Further studies, especially of population genetic patterns of amphidromous species on continents, are needed to test this idea. Interestingly, results of the genetic neutrality tests led us to hypothesize that demographic and drift‐mutation equilibrium is attainable although not always evident for amphidromous species on continents, but is not attainable for those species distributed across island settings.  相似文献

The complete nucleotide sequence of the chloroplast genome ofthe hardwood species Eucalyptus globulus is presented and comparedwith chloroplast genomes of tree and non-tree angiosperms andtwo softwood tree species. The 160 286 bp genome is similarin gene order to that of Nicotiana, with an inverted repeat(IR) (26 393 bp) separated by a large single copy (LSC) regionof 89 012 bp and a small single copy region of 18 488 bp. Thereare 128 genes (112 individual gene species and 16 genes duplicatedin the inverted repeat) coding for 30 transfer RNAs, 4 ribosomalRNAs and 78 proteins. One pseudogene (-infA) and one pseudo-ycf(-ycf15) were identified. The chloroplast genome of E. globulusis essentially co-linear with that of another hardwood treespecies, Populus trichocarpa, except that the latter lacks rps16and rpl32, and the IR has expanded in Populus to include rps19(part of the LSC in E. globulus). Since the chloroplast genomeof E. globulus is not significantly different from other treeand non-tree angiosperm taxa, a comparison of hardwood and softwoodchloroplasts becomes, in essence, a comparison of angiospermand gymnosperm chloroplasts. When compared with E. globulus,Pinus chloroplasts have a very small IR, two extra tRNAs andfour additional photosynthetic genes, lack any functional ndhgenes and have a significantly different genome arrangement. There does not appear to be any correlation between plant habitand chloroplast genome composition and arrangement.  相似文献

The tolerance to salt spray of 29 species, mainly from New Zealandsand dunes, was investigated. Plants were grown in water culturein a glasshouse and subjected to overhead salt spraying at intervals.Growth rates in many species were reduced by salt spray buta significant decrease occurred only in six native herbs. However, many species showed sensitivity in leaf necrosis. Tolerant speciesincluded Scirpoides nodosa, Elymus farctus and Desmoschoenusspiralis. Ammophila arenaria, tolerant of spray as an adult, was less so when younger. There was little correlation between tolerance to salt sprayand tolerance to root salinity. Some species were tolerant toboth, e.g. S. nodosa and E. farctus, and some intolerant toboth, e.g. Wahlenbergia congesta. One species, Lupinus arboreus, was glycophytic in respect to root salt but tolerant of aerialsalt. Other species, such as Senecio elegans L. and Austrofestucalittoralis, were intolerant of salt spray but tolerant of mediumroot salinities. For some species salt spray tolerance correlated well with fielddistribution, e.g. D. spiralis and Bromus diandrus. However, some species present in semi-fixed dunes close to the sea havemuch lower tolerance than would be expected from their fieldsituation, e.g. W. congesta. This apparent inconsistency couldbe explained by the ameliorating high rainfall on the West Coast,or protection by ridges. One environmental variable alone, suchas salt spray, could not explain the field distribution formany species. The mechanical adaptations of the stems of four species of Ranunculusto their respective environments were studied by combining tensile, bending and flow-tunnel tests, with anatomical observation. Stems of the two terrestrial species, R. acris and R. repens, had high values for rigidity, EI, because they were stiffenedby large quantities of peripherally placed lignified material. This trend is less evident in R. repens, which had a lower rigidity, though it with stood a higher breaking strain than R. acris. This may adapt R. repens to its creeping habit and help it withstandtrampling. The aquatic R. peltatus and R. fluitans, which live in stilland fast-flowing water, respectively, are both more flexibleand have higher breaking strains, of 0.1–0.15, than terrestrialplants, which may allow them to withstand sudden tugs due toflow. R. peltatus maintains the central lumen, places structuralelements away from the centre, and has a higher rigidity thanR. fluitans, which may allow it to avoid self-shading, and supportitself when the water level falls. The stem of R. fluitans shows adaptations for withstanding dragfrom fast-flowing water. The stem has a low rigidity which allowsit to minimize inertial drag forces by aligning itself parallelto the direction of the local flow. However, the rigidity (andthe second moment of area, I) does not appear to be minimized. This may allow the plant to avoid drag due to flag-like fluttering.A weak region of the stem near the base may act as a ‘mechanicalfuse’ which protects the root system by allowing seasonalgrowth to be lost. The vertical distribution of the adults of six species of euphausiids,Thysanöessa gregaria, Nematoscelis megalops, Euphausiaamericana, E.gibboides, E.hanseni, Stylocheiron longicorne,as well as the larval stages of E.hanseni, were studied duringa 48 h cycle at a fixed station in the northern Benguela upwellingsystem. All the species, except T.gregaria and S.longicorne, proved to perform diel vertical migration, but both migratoryand non-migratory species appeared to be segregated in spaceduring night-time hours, regardless of potential prey (phytoplanktonand copepods). It is suggested that water column structure andhydrographic discontinuities caused by a warm, depth-localizedintrusion, as well as the reproductive strategies of particularspecies, are responsible for this pattern. Eggs and larval stagesof E.hanseni were concentrated near the surface, and the effectof the short-term pulses of the intrusion on their abundanceis discussed.  相似文献

The swimming behavior of the freshwater calanoid copepods Epischuralacustris, Senecella calanoides, and Limnocalanus macrurus wasexamined using a videotape analysis technique. E. lacustrisand S. calanoides alternate between periods of slow glidingand passive sinking. L. macrurus does not exhibit sinking behavior;its swimming activity consists of slow and steady gliding interruptedoccasionally by jumps. All three copepods exhibit behavioralresponses when exposed to prey organisms, as expressed by anincrease in the duration of sinking for E. lacustris and S.calanoides, a decrease in sinking speed for S. calanoides, anda less circuitous swimming path for L. macrurus. These behavioralchanges may allow the copepods to allocate more time for preydetection, to be less detectable by potential prey and to reducethe frequency of path re-crossing. The results demonstrate therelationship between the swimming and feeding behavior of calanoidcopepods and are consistent with previous findings that copepodshave the ability to modify their foraging behavior in responseto changes in food conditions.  相似文献

The prey of Antarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus gazella, was investigated through scat analysis at Marion Island from 1996 until 2000. A total of 25 different prey species were identified from scats, of which 21 were fish, 1 crustacean and 3 cephalopods. Fish were by far the main prey item, occurring in 96.1% of samples, followed by crustaceans (2.7%) and cephalopods (1.2%). Fishes from the family Myctophidae (Gymnoscopelus piabilis, Electrona carlsbergi, G. fraseri and E. subaspera) were the most abundant prey (97.2%) every year, while those from the families Notothenididae, Paralepididae, Notosudidae, Microstomatidae and Gempylidae were present in small numbers. G. piabilis, E. carlsbergi, E. subaspera and G. nicholsi contributed the most in terms of biomass to the diet. Significant seasonal differences existed in the diet when comparing summer and winter. G. piabilis, K. anderssoni, P. bolini and P. choriodon dominated in summer as opposed to E. carlsbergi, E. subaspera, G. fraseri and G. nicholsi that dominated in winter. The fish varied in size and mass, from the small K. anderssoni to the large Paranotothenia magellanica. Cephalopods and the crustacean Nauticaris marionis, in very low numbers and in winter, appeared in the scats, but not in all years of study. Unidentified penguin remains rarely turned up in scats.  相似文献

The dried leaves of 31 species and two varieties of the genusErythroxylum were quantitatively analysed for cocaine and bothcis- and trans-cinnamoylocaine, using a stable-isotope dilutionmethod and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry selected-ionmonitoring. Both cocaine and cinnamoylcocaine were detectedin all four varieties of cultivated coca (E. coca var. coca,E. coca var. ipadu, E. novogranatense var. novogranatense andE. novogranatense var.truxillense). Cinnamoylcocaines (cis andtrans) were found in much higher concentrations in both varietiesof E. novogranatense than in either variety of E. coca. Amazoniancoca (E. coca var. ipadu) contained consistently lower cocainelevels than the montane variety (E. coca var. coca). Twenty-ninewild species of Erythroxylum, selected to represent morphological, ecological and taxonomic diversity, were analysed for the samealkaloids; cocaine was detected in 13 neotropical species, representingfive sections of the genus. No cocaine was detected in the OldWorld species. Two wild species from Venezuela, E. recurrensand E. steyermarkii, contained cocaine levels comparable tothose found in the commercially cultivated species. We estimated a phylogeny for 10 taxa currently placed in four polytypic species that collectively encompass the African ‘brown buntings’: Cape Bunting Emberiza capensis, Cinnamon‐breasted Bunting Emberiza tahapisi, Lark‐like Bunting Emberiza impetuani and House Bunting Emberiza striolata. We made use of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene and the nuclear introns 6–7 of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), and intron 2 of myoglobin. There was substantial cytochrome b sequence divergence between taxa currently treated as conspecific: sahari vs. striolata (2.6–3.1% (uncorrected‐p); 3.0–3.6% (HKY + I)), and goslingi vs. tahapisi (4.4–4.7% (uncorrected‐p); 5.4–5.9% (HKY + I)). The degree of divergence of the nuclear loci among taxa was limited, and these loci lacked reciprocal monophyly, most likely as a consequence of incomplete lineage sorting. A single representative of the taxon septemstriata, generally treated as a member of the dark‐throated tahapisi group, here appears to be genetically consistent with the grey‐throated goslingi, and may be of hybrid origin. All other taxa allocated to E. striolata and E. tahapisi make up four reciprocally monophyletic groups consistent with sahari, striolata, tahapisi and goslingi, respectively. The extent of genetic evidence suggests that these taxa have been evolving as separate evolutionary lineages for a long time. This is further manifested in several morphological and vocal characteristics described previously, and we propose that these divergent taxa be treated as separate species: Cinnamon‐breasted Bunting Emberiza tahapisi, Gosling's Bunting Emberiza goslingi, Striolated Bunting Emberiza striolata and House Bunting Emberiza sahari. We do not propose any taxonomic changes regarding Emberiza impetuani or Emberiza capensis.  相似文献

Development of Axillary and Leaf-opposed Buds in Rattan Palms   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Axillary vegetative buds are present in Calamus, Ceratolobus, and Plectocomiopsis. Two species of Daemonorops Sect. Piptospathaalso have axillary vegetative buds. All species of Daemonoropshave only displaced adnate axillary inflorescence buds. A singlebud is initiated in the axil of the first or second leaf primordiumin a way similar to that for axillary inflorescence buds. Themeristem is displaced during development on to the internodeabove and sometimes on to the base of the leaf above. Leaf-opposedvegetative buds occur in five species of Daemonorops Sect. Cymbospathaand in one species of Daemonorops Sect. Piptospatha. This typeof bud is initiated 180° away from the axil of the firstor second leaf primordium. It is not a displaced axillary bud,but does become adnate to the internode above like the axillarybuds. One or more leaves, transitional between juvenile andadult, on a shoot often subtend both types of buds. Myrialepishas leaf-opposed vegetative buds, but their development wasnot observed. Korthalsia has buds that are displaced about 130°from the leaf axil and are intermediate between the axillaryand the leaf-opposed condition. Other forms of vegetative budsare described: multiple buds in Plectocomia, aerial forkingin Korthalsia, and suckering from inflorescences and from aerialstems in Calamus. bud development, rattan palms, palm taxonomy, branching  相似文献

The vegetative anatomy of 18 (19) Uncinia spp. (Cyperaceae-Cariceae)including representatives of most taxonomic subdivisions wasstudied to determine the range of variation in certain anatomicaland morphological characters of the vegetative organs withinthe genus. The two South American species U. erinacea and U. kingii differfrom all others, the former in having a closed cylinder of sclerenchymain the culm, and the latter a grooved culm. The three tall SouthAmerican spp., U. brevicaulis, U. hamata, and U. phleoides var.trichocarpa, are characterized by adaxial intercostal fibrestrands in the leaves, and in this respect show affinities withtall New Zealand species, U. sinclairii and U. uncinata. Thelast species does not have the intercostal strands. The muchsmaller U. tenuis from S. America resembles, in the size andshape of transverse sections of leaf and culm, a group of speciesfrom New Zealand comprising U. angustifolia, U. egmontiana, and U. rupestris. To these could be added U. banksii, U. hookeri, and perhaps also U. tenella, although the last two spp. exhibitsome distinctive characters in the transverse section of theleaf and also in the leaf epidermis in surface view. No exactcounterpart to the Australian and New Zealand spp. U. divaricata,U. riparia, U. rubra and U. scabra was found amongst the S.American material. This group of spp. is distinctive, for example, because of the triangular or irregularly triangular shape oftransverse sections of the culm and the large amount of sclerenchymain transverse sections of the leaf. The range of structural variation appears to be particularlywide in the S. American spp., which represent two extreme typesin the shape of the leaf in transverse section. The other talland small species have their respective counterparts in eacharea, although they are more profusely represented in New Zealandthan in America, and therefore show a correspondingly greaterrange of structure.  相似文献

During the phase of exponential growth in chlorophyllous calluscultures derived from Haplopappus gracilis, Hypochaeris radicata, and Acer pseudoplatamus, cells double their number on the average, and also their volume, in about 4.3, 6.6, and 9–2 daysrespectively. The two rates decline subsequently but cell expansioncontinues for a short time after division has ceased. With culturesof Oxalis dispar, however, which have an average cell generationtime of about 10 days, there is first a short exponential phasedominated by division, and this is followed by a series of phasesdominated alternately by either division or expansion. Chlorophyll accumulation does not occur in Haplopappus duringthe exponential phase (chlorophyll a decreases) but there isa slow accumulation of caro-tenoids. The bulk of the pigmentsaccumulate during the declining phase of growth mainly afterdivision has ceased. With Hypochaeris and Acer, on the otherhand, accumulation is most intense during the exponential phase, and few pigments are added later. With Oxalis, most of the accumulationoccurs after the exponential phase; carotenoids accumulate untilthe cessation of growth whereas chlorophylls start to declinebefore this. With all species, pigments decline after the cessationof growth. The loss is small in Haplopappus and the tissuesare still bright green when the medium dries out: Hypochaerisand Oxalis, in contrast, eventually become colourless. The data are discussed in relation to the changes in pigmentcontent that accompany the growth and development of a singlecell in each species.  相似文献

A 2 year study of the phytoplankton community was carried outin the Indian River Lagoon, USA. In terms of biovolume, thephytoplankton community was generally dominated by dinoflagellates, diatoms or cyanobacteria. Mean phytoplankton standing cropswere highest in the most flow-restricted regions of the lagoon, which had the lowest mean salinity values and comparativelyhigh total nitrogen:total phosphorus ratios. In this region, blooms of dinoflagellates were common in the first year of thestudy, which was characterized by an El Niño event thatyielded exceptionally high rainfall levels and freshwater outflow.Picoplanktonic cyanobacteria blooms became more prominent inthe second year of the study, which was characterized by belowaverage rainfall conditions. In unrestricted flow regions ofthe lagoon, located near inlets to the Atlantic Ocean, diatomswere most often the dominant taxa. Regions of intermediate waterturnover rates and high external loading of phosphorus had aprevalence of diatom blooms. However, the average phytoplanktonstanding crops in the latter regions did not reach the levelsexperienced in the flow-restricted parts of the lagoon. In termsof individual phytoplankton taxa, the most common bloom-formingdiatoms in the Indian River Lagoon system included: Skeletonemacostatum, Dactyliosolen fragilissimus, Skeletonema menzelii,Cerataulina pelagica, Odontella regia, Chaetoceros lorenzianus,Rhizosolenia setigera and Thalassionema nitzschioides. The majorbloom-forming dinoflagellate species included: Pheopolykrikoshartmannii, Akashiwo sanguinea, Prorocentrum micans, the potentiallytoxic species Pyrodinium bahamense var. bahamense and Prorocentrumminimum. Several picoplanktonic cyanobacteria were also prominentmembers of the phytoplankton community, including Synechococcuselongates. The spatial and temporal patterns observed in someof these dominant species were attributable to patterns in keyenvironmental variables, including salinity, temperature andnutrient concentrations.  相似文献

Unlike most plant species, Oryza sativa L. cv. S-201 and Echinochloaphyllopogon (Stev.) Koss germinate and grow under anaerobicconditions. In both species, the radicle or shoot emerged byday 3 when the seeds were germinated in air or N2. Under eithercondition, shoot and/or root dry weight (d. wt) increased linearlyfrom day 3 to day 7, with a corresponding decrease in seed d.wt. In anaerobically grown O. sativa, d. wt accumulation wasreduced to 7% of that in air whereas d. wt lost from the seedwas reduced to only 37%. No root growth occurred during anaerobicgermination and shoot d. wt accumulation accounted for 10% ofthe d. wt lost from the seed. In E. phyllopogon, d. wt accumulationduring anoxia was 25% of that in air, but loss of d. wt fromthe seed was 44% of the aerobic rate. In air, 48% of the d.wt lost from the seed was converted to shoot or root d. wt.Like O. sativa, E. phyllopogon does not produce a root underN2, but shoot growth accounted for 27% of the d. wt lost fromthe seed. Thus, either in air or N2, E. phyllopogon was moreefficient at converting seed reserves to shoot/root structuraldry matter than O. sativa . Based on changes in metabolite pools,O. sativa appeared to shift exclusively to fermentation duringanaerobic growth. In E. phyllopogon, however, fermentation alonecannot satisfy the energy requirement for growth without O2.Rather, fermentation, coupled with limited tricarboxylic acid(TCA) cycle operation could supply sufficient ATP for growthunder anaerobic conditions. An active oxidative pentose phosphatepathway and lipid synthesis were discussed as important mechanismsfor converting NADH to NAD, a necessary cofactor for fermentationand TCA cycle activity.Copyright 1994, 1999 Academic Press Anaerobiosis, Echinochloa phyllopogon, energetics model, fermentation, mitochondrial activity, Oryza sativa, rice, tricarboxylic acid cycle, watergrass  相似文献

Medicago minimaandErodium cicutariumare two naturalized annualspecies in extensive semi-arid, temperate rangelands of centralArgentina. A field study was conducted during 1989 and 1990to evaluate the effects of different levels of soil water availabilityon above- and below-ground dry weight production and partitioningin these species. Dry weight production byM. minimawas moresensitive to water stress than that byE. cicutarium. Althoughthe response was more marked inM. minima, both species allocateda larger proportion of total plant dry weight to fruits underwater stress than under irrigated conditions during early spring.Percentage allocation of total plant dry weight into reproductiveorgans in both species, and stems and peduncles inE. cicutarium, was correlated with total dry weight of these organs; this mightindicate a correlation between sink size and strength. Persistenceof both species in the local flora appears to be associatedwith their capacity to colonize open, degraded areas and growin association with native perennial grasses, as well as totolerate severe drought periods.Copyright 1998 Annals of BotanyCompany Medicago minima(L.) Using multivariate statistics we have examined spatio-temporalpatterns in the distribution of siphonophore assemblages alongthe east coast of South Africa, anticipating constancy in cross-shelfand alongshore structure that would mirror the hydrographicstability. Indeed, while the surface temperature of the AgulhasCurrent does vary on a seasonal basis, the position of its coreis thought to have a stable trajectory year round, and its otherphysical and chemical characteristics are considered to be relativelyaseasonal. Two clear aseasonal assemblages were observed, associatedeither with the nearshore waters in the extreme SW (Port Alfredupwelling cell), or with the Agulhas Current and inshore watersnorth of East London. Assemblages in the current-driven upwellingcell were characterized by low overall diversity and dense populationsof Muggiaea atlantica (up to 28 000 ind. 1000 m–3). Assemblageselsewhere in the region were dominated by Abylopsis eschscholtzi,A. tetragona, Bassia bassensis, Chelophyes contorta, Diphyesdispar, D. bojani, Eudoxoides spiralis, E. mitra, Lensia subtiloidesand Sulculeolaria chuni. There is some evidence of both an alongshoreand a cross-shelf pattern in the distribution of assemblagesnorth of East London, but this is subordinate to a strongerseasonal signal. The impact of seasonality on regional assemblagesis hypothesized to be reflected in significant changes in theupstream structure of Agulhas Current assemblages.  相似文献
