The Hemileuca maia species complex occurs across the North American continent and consists of six named taxa, and several others that were recently synonymized. Taxa exhibit a wide span of adult flight periods, dramatic shifts in host‐plant use and occur in a range of habitats, all of which would suggest unrecognized diversity. We used one mitochondrial and three nuclear genes to generate 3900 bp per individual, including samples from every ecotype in the species group across the United States from New England to central Florida to California. We assessed phylogenetic relationships using both maximum likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic methods. Results suggest very low levels of divergence across most of the continent and low levels of genetic structure – even between some recognized species that maintain clear ecological difference in sympatry. Our results suggest that meaningful and localized ecological divergence may occur in the absence of easily recognizable genetic divergence, due to either ongoing gene flow or the recent diversification in the group.

Summary We examined how predation by vespid wasps,Polistes dominulus andP. fuscatus, affected the behavior, growth rate and survivorship of aggregated caterpillars ofHemileuca lucina (Saturniidae). Although these larvae can exhibit a variety of defense and escape behaviors, in general larvae reacted to wasp attacks by clinging to the hostplant. Neighboring larvae in the aggregation responded by leaving the feeding site and moving to the interior or base of the plant. To determine wheter wasp attack affected the behavior and growth of the caterpillars that escaped, a field experiment was conducted with treatments of: 1) larvae exposed to wasps, 2) larvae protected from wasps, and 3) larvae protected from wasps but with the attack of wasps simulated (=harassment). Over just one instar, protected larvae gained significantly more weight than the harassed larvae, which in turn weighed significantly more than the larvae that escaped the wasps. The behavior of attacked and harassed larvae differed from that of the protected larvae; the disturbed larvae often fed in smaller groups and in shaded portions of the plant where only mature leaves were available. A laboratory experiment showed that at 35° C (daytime temperature) larvae had significantly higher relative growth rates and significantly shorter instar duration than larvae reared at 25° C. Our results suggest that wasps, in addition to killing caterpillars, indirectly affect larval fitness by slowing larval growth, at least in part by forcing larvae into cooler microhabitats where leaves are of lower quality.

The louse suborder Ischnocera (Phthiraptera) contains 3060 currently described species from over 150 genera. These lice are permanent obligatory ectoparasites of a diverse selection of birds and mammals with a worldwide distribution. Historically, they have played a major role in the development of our ideas on coevolution, and species hosted by mammals have been used extensively as model organisms for the study of cospeciation. In contrast, avian taxa comprising 90% of ischnoceran species have been neglected due to a lack of data on their wider systematics. A comparative study based on the adult and nymphal instar morphology of avian lice yielded 138 characters from 56 species (51 genera), all of which are illustrated or discussed here for the first time. A further five outgroup taxa were examined from the mammalian ischnoceran family Trichodectidae. Phylogenetic analyses of these data produced three most parsimonious cladograms, the strict consensus of which is highly resolved and broadly consistent with previous classifications. Morphological character variation is extensive, and nymphal character traits are useful in identifying instances of convergent evolution in adult morphology. The role of ontogeny in the development of the major character complexes of the head and abdomen is discussed, and its implications for further work on the phylogeny of avian Ischnocera is considered. Comparison with host taxonomy reveals a series of complex host-parasite associations that do not support a hypothesis of strict one to one cospeciation. However, extrapolation of these associations is compromised by the low sample size. The role of niche specialization to explain the presence of multiple unrelated lineages on the same host taxon is considered.

Evolution and phylogeny of gonad morphology in bony fishes
Gonad morphology at the gross anatomical or histological levelshas long been studied by fisheries biologists to identify annualreproductive cycles and length of breeding season, among othergoals. Comparative surveys across vertebrate taxa have not beendetailed enough, however, to describe fully the differencesand similarities among gonads of bony fishes and other vertebrates, and to use gonad morphology in phylogenetic systematic analyses. An emerging constant among vertebrates is the presence of agerminal epithelium composed of somatic and germ cells in bothmales and females. In females, the germinal epithelium linesthe ovarian lamellae. In males, arrangement of the germinalepithelium into compartments varies among osteichthyans: basaltaxa have an anastomosing tubular testis, whereas derived taxahave a lobular testis. The lobular testis is proposed as a synapomorphyof the Neoteleostei. The annual reproductive cycle is hypothesizedto be the source of morphological variation among testis types.Elongation of germinal compartments during early maturationmay result in a transition from anastomosing tubular to lobulartestes. In all male atherinomorphs surveyed, spermatogonia arerestricted to the distal termini of lobules rather than beingdistributed along the lobule; there is an epithelioid arrangementof Sertoli and germ cells rather than a germinal epithelium.Arrest of the maturation-regression phases is hypothesized tolead to formation of the atherinomorph testis. Atherinomorphsalso have a distinctive egg with fluid, rather than granular, yolk. Variation among germinal epithelia is interpreted in adeveloping phylogenetic framework to understand evolution ofgonad morphology and to propose gonad characters for phylogeneticanalyses.

A phylogeny of sparoid fishes (Perciformes, Percoidei) based on morphology
The putative percoid superfamily Sparoidea includes the Nemipteridae, Lethrinidae, Sparidae, and Centracanthidae. Although a rigorous cladistic analysis has never been attempted, two hypotheses regarding relationships among these families have been proposed. One early noncladistic hypothesis considered the Sparidae to be intermediate between the more primitive Nemipteridae and the more derived Lethrinidae. A later nonformal phylogenetic treatment provided evidence for a close relationship between Sparidae and Centranthidae and suggested a closer affinity between the Nemipteridae and Lethrinidae. We examine 54 osteological, ligament, and squamation characters in representatives of all 45 genera of these families and 4 outgroup taxa. The results of our cladistic analysis are congruent with a cladistic interpretation of the earlier hypothesis, with strong support for the phyletic sequence Nemipteridae, Lethrinidae, Sparidae plus Centracanthidae, with placement of centracanthids unresolved with respect to sparid genera. The benthic dinoflagellates in the genus Gambierdiscus produce toxins that bioaccumulate in tropical and sub‐tropical fish causing ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP). Other co‐occurring genera such as Coolia have also been implicated in causing CFP. Little is known about the diversity of the two genera Gambierdiscus and Coolia along the Thai coasts. The results of morphological analyses based on observation under light microscopy and scanning electron microcopy showed that strains of Gambierdiscus from Thailand displayed the typical Gambierdiscus plate formula: Po, 4′, 0a, 6″, 6c,?s, 5′′′, 0p and 2′′′′. Morphological examination of Thai Gambierdiscus enabled it to be identified as Gambierdiscus caribaeus: round and anterior‐posteriorly compressed cell shape, broad 2′′′′ plate, rectangular 2′ plate, and symmetrical 3″ plate. The phylogenetic analyses based on the large subunit (LSU) rDNA D8/D10 sequences of Gambierdiscus from Thailand confirmed the morphological identification. The thecal plate formula for all of the Coolia isolates from Thailand was Po, 4′, 0a, 6″,?c,?s, 5′′′, 0p and 2′′′′. Most, but not all, of these isolates could be identified morphologically as Coolia malayensis. An LSU rDNA D1/D2 phylogenetic analysis confirmed identity of C. malayensis isolates identified morphologically. The remaining unidentified isolates fell in the C. tropicalis clade.

The mitochondrial cytochrome b gene of the majority ofAcrocephalus species (76 individuals) was amplified by PCR and sequenced directly. Nucleotide sequences (1068 base pairs) were used to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships within the genusAcrocephalus as well as betweenAcrocephalus and other sylviid warblers, particularlyHippolais. Acrocephalus andHippolais share ancestry and cluster in a monophyletic clade.Hippolais appears to represent a polyphyletic assemblage sinceH. icterina figures as the sister taxon toAcrocephalus, whereas Hippolaispallida andcaligata cluster withinAcrocephalus. The followingAcrocephalus clades could be recognized: (1) Large reed warblers form a clade consisting of a monophyletic Palearctic-Australasian subgroup (arundinaceus, stentoreus brunnescens, orientalis, australis, andvaughani) and a monophyletic Afrotropical subgroup (brevipennis, rufescens, gracilirostris, sechellensis, andnewtoni).A. griseldis holds an isolated position at the base of the large reed warbler clade. Within the small reed warblers, two probably monophyletic clades are apparent: (2) the striped species (withbistrigiceps, melanopogon, paludicola, andschoenobaenus), and (3) the small plain-coloured complex (consisting ofdumetorum, palustris, scirpaceus, s. fuscus, baeticatus, andavicenniae plus the neighbouringagricola-complex withagricola, tangorum, andconcinens). The relationship between these groups cannot be resolved. The molecular data clarify the status of some taxa, the systematic position of which has been controversial. A morphometric analysis (PCA) of 20 external characters confirmed the basic complexes, and unveiled adaptations of general importance among clades. At species level, we found less congruence between molecular and morphological data, which can be interpreted as a consequence of specializing adaptations and convergence. The major complexes established by molecular and morphometric analyses are further supported by distributional, acoustical, and oological affinities. A sound phylogenetic framework of the genus makes it now possible to examine the distribution of ecological and behavioural characters and to differentiate informative or convergent characters.Acrocephalus may be split into four previously recognized genera with the following names:Acrocephalus for the large,Calamodus for the striped,Notiocichla for the small plain, andIduna for the brownish Hippolais species.

The phylogeny and taxonomy of the whole family Hippopotamidae is in need of reconsideration, the present confusion obstructing palaeoecology and palaeobiogeography studies of these Neogene mammals. The revision of the Hippopotamidae initiated here deals with the last 8 Myr of African and Asian species. The first thorough cladistic analysis of the family is presented here. The outcome of this analysis, including 37 morphological characters coded for 15 extant and fossil taxa, as well as non-coded features of mandibular morphology, was used to reconstruct broad outlines of hippo phylogeny. Distinct lineages within the paraphyletic genus Hexaprotodon are recognized and characterized. In order to harmonize taxonomy and phylogeny, two new genera are created. The genus name Choeropsis is re-validated for the extant Liberian hippo. The nomen Hexaprotodon is restricted to the fossil lineage mostly known in Asia, but also including at least one African species. The genus Hippopotamus is confirmed. These changes represent substantial advances for understanding the evolutionary history of the Hippopotamidae, and provide a new framework for future studies.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 143 , 1–26.

A study is made of the articulation and base of hindwings of Scarabaeidae. The survey is based on an examination of over 150 genera from sixteen scarabaeid subfamilies and taxa of uncertain phylogenetic status. Relationships among all subfamilies of Scarabaeidae are examined here for the first time. The constructed phylogeny shows that the scarabaeid lineage (Scarabaeidae) is comprised of two major lines: an aphodiine line (containing Aphodiinae, including Aegialiini, Aulonocnemis and Scarabaeinae), and an orphnine line (containing Orphninae, Melolonthinae, Acoma , Chnaunanthus , Hopliini, Oncerus , Rutelinae, Dynastinae, Trichiinae, Cetoniinae, Osmoderma and Valginae).

Previous classification of the Disinae has been based almost entirely on floral morphological data. These data are critically assessed by various methods to determine to what extent they support a classification resolved to sectional level. The variation in the characters relative to the sections and genera is mapped, homologies are established by careful morphological observation and ontogenetic studies, and finally hypotheses of homology are tested by congruence in several cladistic analyseS. It is found that although floral morphology allows the recognition of some groups, for others the results are ambiguouS. Floral morphological data are clearly inadequate to establish the taxonomy of the Disinae on a sound footing.

The pollen of the tribe Alyxieae, including Alyxia , Chilocarpus , Condylocarpon , Lepinia , Lepiniopsis , Plectaneia and Pteralyxia , has been studied with light, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy. It is characterised by relatively large, irregularly disposed and - unequal-sized pores. 2-porate grains are most common in the Alyxieae, and occur in all genera except for Condylocarpon . 1-, 3-, 4- and 5-porate pollen grains are less common. The orientation of the polar axis and the equatorial plane could not be determined in any of the genera. Within the Alyxieae, Chilocarpus and Plectaneia are the nearest to other Apocynaceae, showing an essentially similar exine ultrastructure. Alyxia , Lepinia , Lepiniopsis and Pteralyxia make up a derived group, characterised by large pollen grain size and a remarkable nexine structure. Pollen of Lepinia and Lepiniopsis might be derived on the basis of their fossulate-verrucate ornamentation. Condylocarpon pollen shows a deviating set of pollen features (tetrads, inaperturate, reduced exine) that suggest it to be neotenic. Pollen morphology supports preliminary results of cladistic analyses of chloroplast data, in which the tribe is a monophyletic group nested in a 3-colporate environment, Chilocarpus and Condylocarpon are sisters at the base of the tree, Plectaneia is sister to a clade made up by Alyxia , Pteralyxia , Lepinia and Lepiniopsis , of which Lepinia and Lepiniopsis are the most derived.

Species of Gnomoniopsis are leaf- and stem-inhabiting pyrenomycetes that infect plants in Fagaceae, Onagraceae and Rosaceae. Morphology and analyses of DNA sequences from three ribosomal DNA and protein coding regions, namely β-tubulin, translation elongation factor 1α (tef-1α) and the ITS region including ITS1, 5.8S rDNA and ITS2, were used to define species in Gnomoniopsis. Secondary structural alignment of the ITS region across four genera in Gnomoniaceae was used to increase the potential number of homologous positions in the ITS alignment. Ascospore isolates were grown from newly collected specimens. Type specimens were compared with these specimens to determine their identity. In this paper a recent concept of Gnomoniopsis is confirmed with phylogenetic resolution of additional species. Four new combinations and one new species are proposed. Nine species are described and illustrated, and a key is provided to the 13 species currently recognized in Gnomoniopsis.

Aplanochytrids comprise one of three major subgroups within the Labyrinthulomycota. We have surveyed the diversity of aplanochytrids and have discovered that most isolates are difficult to identify to species because of character plasticity and ambiguity. Ten isolates were studied using molecular phylogenies based on small subunit ribosomal gene sequences (SSU rDNA) and morphological characters derived from light microscopy, SEM and TEM (e.g., colony size, colony shape, colony pattern, agar penetration, cell shape, cell surface patterns, cell inclusion characteristics and ectoplasmic net morphology). Of these isolates, we could positively identify two of them to species, namely Aplanochytrium yorkensis (Perkins, 1973) Leander and Porter, 2000 and A. minuta (Watson and Raper, 1957) Leander and Porter, 2000. We used standardized conditions for growing aplanochytrid isolates in order to minimize environmentally induced phenotypic plasticity in our comparative studies of morphology. By mapping the morphological characters listed above onto a conservative phylogenetic topology derived from SSU rDNA sequences, we were able to identify several synapomorphies (e.g., gross colony characteristics and cell surface patterns) that serve as valuable taxonomic characters for the identification of species and specific clades of aplanochytrids.

Plant litter decomposition is one of the most important processes in terrestrial ecosystems, as it is a key factor in nutrient cycling. Decomposition rates depend on environmental factors, but also plant traits, as these determine the character of detritus. We measured litter decomposition rate for 57 common tree species displaying a variety of functional traits within four sites in primary and four sites in secondary tropical forest in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea. The phylogenetic relationships between these trees were also estimated using molecular data. The leaves collected from different tree species were dried for two days, placed into detritus bags and exposed to ambient conditions for two months. Nitrogen, carbon and ash content were assessed as quantitative traits and used together with a phylogenetic variance– covariance matrix as predictors of decomposition rate. The analysis of the tree species composition from 96 quadrats located along a successional gradient of swidden agriculture enabled us to determine successional preferences for individual species. Nitrogen content was the only functional trait measured to be significantly positively correlated with decomposition rate. Controlling for plant phylogeny did not influence our conclusions, but including phylogeny demonstrated that the mainly early successional family Euphorbiaceae is characterized by a particularly high decomposition rate. The acquisitive traits (high nitrogen content and low wood density) correlated with rapid decomposition were characteristic for early successional species. Decomposition rate thus decreased from early successional to primary forest species. However, the decomposition of leaves from the same species was significantly faster in primary than in secondary forest stands, very probably because the high humidity of primary forest environments keeps the decomposing material wetter.

Abstract. Recent independent phylogenetic analyses of membracid relationships based on molecular and morphological data have identified monophyletic lineages within the family. However, the results of these studies have not fully resolved treehopper phylogeny, and relationships among some higher membracid lineages remain in doubt. Portions of three datasets (958 aligned nucleotides from elongation factor‐1α, 2363 aligned nucleotides from 28S ribosomal DNA, and eighty‐three morphological features of adults and nymphs) introduced in recent studies were reanalysed separately and in combination with two new molecular datasets (321 aligned nucleotides from wingless and 1829 aligned nucleotides from 18S ribosomal DNA). The results of the combined data analyses, contrary to previous analyses of morphological data alone, grouped membracids into two well‐supported lineages, one comprising Stegaspidinae and Centrotinae, the other comprising Membracinae, Darninae and Smiliinae. The analyses recovered Centrotinae, Membracinae and Darninae as monophyletic groups, but Stegaspidinae was paraphyletic with respect to Centrotinae, and Smiliinae was polyphyletic with Micrutalini placed as a sister group to the clade comprising Membracinae, Darninae and Smiliinae. These results are consistent with the following hypotheses, proposed previously based on an analysis of morphological data: (1) the posterior pronotal process was derived and lost multiple times during the evolution of Membracidae; (2) Membracidae originated in the New World and reached the Old World subsequently via dispersal; (3) maternal care evolved independently multiple times and may or may not have been preceded by the acquisition of ant mutualism.

Abstract. Bivalve classification has suffered in the past from the crossed-purpose discussions among paleontologists and neontologists, and many have based their proposals on single character systems. More recently, molecular biologists have investigated bivalve relationships by using only gene sequence data, ignoring paleontological and neontological data. In the present study we have compiled morphological and anatomical data with mostly new molecular evidence to provide a more stable and robust phylogenetic estimate for bivalve molluscs. The data here compiled consist of a morphological data set of 183 characters, and a molecular data set from 3 loci: 2 nuclear ribosomal genes (18S rRNA and 28S rRNA), and 1 mitochondrial coding gene (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I), totaling ∼3 Kb of sequence data for 76 molluscs (62 bivalves and 14 outgroup taxa). The data have been analyzed separately and in combination by using the direct optimization method of Wheeler (1996), and they have been evaluated under 12 analytical schemes. The combined analysis supports the monophyly of bivalves, paraphyly of protobranchiate bivalves, and monophyly of Autolamellibranchiata, Pteriomorphia, Heteroconchia, Palaeoheterodonta, and Heterodonta s.l., which includes the monophyletic taxon Anomalodesmata. These analyses strongly support the conclusion that Anomalodesmata should not receive a class status, and that the heterodont orders Myoida and Veneroida are not monophyletic. Among the most stable results of the analysis are the monophyly of Palaeoheterodonta, grouping the extant trigoniids with the freshwater unionids, and the sister-group relationship of the heterodont families Astartidae and Carditidae, which together constitute the sister taxon to the remaining heterodont bivalves. Internal relationships of the main bivalve groups are discussed on the basis of node support and clade stability.

The systematics of tenebrionids remain unclear, principally at the subfamily level, as is the case of the Lagriinae. Considering that sperm morphology has contributed to the various insect group phylogenies, in this work we describe the structure and ultrastructure of these cells in Lagria villosa. Sperm in this species exhibit a strong morphological similarity to those of Tenebrio molitor and Tribolium castaneum, the only two species of Tenebrionidae with previously described sperm. In tenebrionids, the flagellar components offer good diagnostic characters, e.g. the symmetry of mitochondrial derivatives in L. villosa differentiates sperm of this species from those of Te. molitor and Tr. castaneum. However, the lateral association of the nucleus with flagellar components, the form of accessory bodies, and the presence of material connecting the axoneme to the accessory bodies and mitochondrial derivatives indicate that the three species form a sister group. Therefore, the sperm morphology of L. villosa support lagriid beetles as a subfamily (Lagriinae) of Tenebrionidae.

The phylogeny of Cyclops (~30 spp.), a predominantly Palearctic cold‐adapted genus, was reconstructed based on morphological and molecular characters. The morphological analysis used extensive taxon sampling from the entire Holarctic range of the genus and included 53 morphological characters. Polymorphic traits were coded by the “unordered,” “unscaled” and “scaled” methods; maximum parsimony criterion was applied in tree building. Molecular phylogenetic reconstructions utilized partial nuclear 18S and 28S ribosomal genes, mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I and complete internal transcribed spacer regions I and II, albeit with limited taxon sampling. Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood were used in these tree reconstructions. The molecular characters were used both in combination with morphology and as an independent test of the basal relationships inferred from morphology. Monophyly of the genus received strong support in both the morphological and molecular phylogenies; the basal relationships remain unresolved. The morphology‐based phylogenies, along with the geographic distribution patterns and ecological traits, supported monophyly of the ankyrae?ladakanus clade, scutifer‐clade (C. scutifer, C. jashnovi, C. columbianus), kolensis‐clade (C. kolensis, C. kikuchii, C. vicinus, C. furcifer, C. insignis, C. alaskaensis), abyssorum‐clade (C. abyssorum s. str., C. abyssorum larianus, C. ricae, C. sevani) and divergens‐clade (South Carpathian “Cyclops sp. Y,” C. mauritaniae, C. divergens, C. bohater, C. lacustris). Relationships among European and North American populations of C. scutifer and C. columbianus based on partial sequences of the 12S mitochondrial gene show C. scutifer to be paraphyletic, suggesting two independent invasions into North America via the Bering Land Bridge from Siberia to Alaska.
