The rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis, enters facultative diapause as fully grown larvae in response to short-day conditions during the autumn. Our results showed that the critical night length for diapause induction in C. suppressalis was between 10 h 22 min and 10 h 45 min at 22, 25 and 28 °C, 11 h 18 min at 31 °C, and between 10 h 5 min and 10 h 20 min under field conditions (average temperature ranged from 27.2 to 30.7 °C). The diapause incidence declined in ultra-long nights (18-22 h scotophases) and DD, and increased in ultra-short nights (2-6 h scotophases) and LL. Moreover, we found that the third instar was the stage most sensitive to the photoperiod, and night length played an essential role in the initiation of diapause. Night-interruption experiments with a 1-h light pulse at LD 12:12 (light 12:dark 12) exhibited two troughs of diapause inhibition, with one occurring in early scotophase and the other in late scotophase. Field observations for six years showed that most larvae entered winter diapause in August in response to declining day lengths, despite the high temperatures prevailing during August. By periodically transferring the field-collected overwintering larvae to different photoperiods and temperatures, the results showed that photoperiod had a significant influence on diapause development during the early phase of diapause, while high temperature significantly accelerated the termination of larval diapause.  相似文献

Artificial lighting is a merit of a ‘plant factory’, which might be utilized to suppress an increase in pest population. We investigated the effects of extending the light phase on diapause induction in the two-spotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae. TSSM were reared at 18°C under light phases ranging from 2 to 64 h combined with a constant dark phase of 16 h in aluminum bottles, with white light emitting diodes attached inside to minimize fluctuations in air temperature between the light and dark phases. Diapause was induced in adult TSSM females when the light phase was 24 h or shorter, and diapause induction was inhibited when the light phase extended over 32 h. The development of deutonymphs was delayed under a diapause-inducing photoperiod. Diapause inducing photoperiods may suppress an increase in the TSSM population, by slowing down development and reproduction.  相似文献

To investigate the physiology of Chrysopa pallens, the effect of photoperiod on diapause and development was examined in a Japanese population (33.4°N). The response stage for diapause of C. pallens was considered to be the prepupal stage. The critical photoperiod for diapause induction at 20.0°C was between 13 h light : 11 h dark (LD 13:11) and LD 14:10. The larval developmental period was affected by photoperiod: larvae in diapause took longer to complete their development. This difference of larval developmental period in relation to photoperiod was considered to be an adjustment of larval diapause timing.  相似文献

Induction of diapause in the larval stage of the oblique-banded leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris), was found to be dependent on both photoperiod and temperature. At constant temperatures of 24, 20 and 16°C, short photoperiods induced diapause. The critical photoperiod was between 14–15 h of light per day at 20 and 16°C. At 14 h light: 10 h dark, all larvae expressed diapause. Temperature had a modifying effect, and slightly shifted the larval response to diapause-inducing photoperiods. High constant temperatures of 28°C and above induced diapause in some individuals (< 20%), while fluctuating temperatures of 32 and 16°C in a 12-h cycle resulted in 67% diapause induction, suggesting that diapause could also be induced by fluctuating temperatures, particularly if the higher temperature exceeds 25°C.The first- and the second-instar larvae were the only two stages sensitive to diapause induction. Exposure of adult, egg and third, fourth, and fifth-larval instars to diapause-inducing conditions did not produce diapause. Although diapause was induced in the first or the second instars, it was always expressed in the third or fourth instar.  相似文献

Chlorops oryzae is bivoltine in northern Japan but trivoltine in the southern part of the country. In the bivoltine strain, both the egg and larval stages were found to be sensitive to photoperiod. When the egg stage was exposed to a long-day photoperiod (16L:8D), larval development showed a short-day type response, and mature third-instar larvae entered a summer diapause under a long-day photoperiod (15L:9D). When eggs experienced short days, the first-instar larvae entered a winter diapause under short-day conditions, and the critical photoperiod in the larval stage ranged from about 14L:10D to about 12L:12D as the photoperiod experienced by the eggs increased from 12L:12D to 14L:10D. However, the development of the larvae after overwintering was not influenced by the photoperiod. In the trivoltine strain, larval development was retarded under a 14L:10D photoperiod but not under either shorter or longer photoperiods, when larvae had spent the egg stage under a 16L:8D photoperiod. The critical photoperiod of the larval stage for the induction of a winter diapause in the first instar was about 12L:12D, though it varied to some extent with the photoperiod during the egg stage. Thus, Chlorops oryzae was able to adapt itself to the local climatic conditions by the development of variable and complicated photoperiodic responses.  相似文献

The yellow peach moth, Conogethes punctiferalis (Guenée), a multivoltine species that overwinters as diapausing larvae, is one of the most serious insect pests on maize in China. Effect of photoperiod and temperature on larval diapause was examined under empirical laboratory conditions. Short‐day treatments caused larval diapause at 25°C, and the critical photoperiod was between 12 and 13 h (or 12 h 51 min) light per day. No sensitive instar was identified for diapause induction under alternated short‐ (L : D 11 : 13 h) and long‐day (L : D 14 : 10 h) treatments at different larval stages. However, accumulative treatment of three instars and 10 d under short‐day treatment was required for the induction of 50% larval diapause. All larvae entered diapause at 20°C, whereas less than 3% did so at 30°C, irrespective of the long‐ or short‐day treatment. Furthermore, under the short‐day treatment, more than 90% of larvae went into diapause with temperatures ≤ 25°C, but less than 17% did so at 28°C. In contrast, under the long‐day treatment, less than 19% of larvae went into diapause with temperatures ≥ 23°C. The forward shift (5°C) of critical temperature under the long‐day regime demonstrated the compensatory effect of temperature and photoperiod on diapause induction. In conclusion, C. punctiferalis had a temperature‐dependent type I photoperiodic diapause response; there was no sensitive instar for diapause determination, but the photoperiodic accumulation time countermeasures both of the short‐day cycles and the number of instars exposed, and the photoperiodic diapause response, was a temperature‐compensated phenomenon.  相似文献

The inhibitory effects of the timing, intensity (II) and period (IT) of night-interrupting light on diapause induction of the Kanzawa spider mite (Tetranychus kanzawai) were investigated in a series of laboratory experiments. During a light and dark period of 8 and 16 h d−1, respectively, a single 1-h night-interrupting light was applied at early (E), middle (M), and late (L) parts of the dark period: i.e., at 3, 7.5, and 12 h after the start of the dark period, respectively. No interrupting light was applied in the control treatment. The incidence of diapause was significantly lower in the M treatment (63%) compared to the control treatment (100%). In the E and L treatments, more than 90% of females entered diapause, which was comparable to the control treatment. Since the longest consecutive dark period during the E and L treatments was longer than the critical dark period (CDP) of 10.5-11 h d−1, during which 50% of females entered diapause, the night-interrupting light probably failed to prevent diapause induction. However, in the M treatment, the longest consecutive dark period was shorter than the CDP; therefore, the night-interrupting light inhibited diapause induction. Moreover, the inhibitory effects of night-interrupting light in the M treatment increased as II and IT increased. The dose of night-interrupting light (II × IT) was significantly negatively related to the incidence of diapause. The median effective dose for 50% disturbance of diapause induction was 2.5 kJ m−2 at wavelengths between 350 and 1050 nm. Our results suggest that the longest consecutive dark period and the dose of night-interrupting light should both be considered when a lighting-based physical control is applied to inhibit diapause induction and consequent overwintering of T. kanzawai in commercial agricultural fields.  相似文献

Abstract The Indian meal moth Plodia interpunctella Hübner (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) diapauses as a last‐instar (fifth) larva. At 30 °C, no larvae enter diapause under any photoperiodic conditions; at 25 °C, the photoperiodic response curve is a long‐day type with a critical length of approximately 13 h light; at 20 °C, diapause is induced moderately even under long days (> 13 h). Cumulative effects of short days or long days on diapause induction are determined by alternate, stepwise and gradually changing regimes of photoperiod at 25 °C. When the larvae are repeatedly exposed to LD 16 : 8 h and LD 12 : 12 h photoperiods every other day, the incidence of diapause is 37%. When the larvae are placed under an LD 16 : 8 h photoperiod for 2 days and then under an LD 12 : 12 h photoperiod for 1 day, it is 38 %. Exposure to an LD 16 : 8 h photoperiod for 1 day and then to an LD 12 : 12 h photoperiod for 2 days induces only 15% diapause. This may indicate that the photoperiodic information is not accumulated in a simple fashion despite the generally accepted hypothesis (i.e. photoperiodic counter). Larvae exposed to an LD 16 : 8 h photoperiod for 5 days after oviposition express a very high incidence of diapause even under short days between an LD 2 : 22 h and LD 12 : 12 h photoperiod. After 10 days exposure to an LD 16 : 8 h photoperiod, however, the short day does not induce diapause strongly. On the other hand, an LD 12 : 12 h photoperiod in the early larval life is highly effective in the induction of diapause. A gradual increase or decrease of photoperiod (2 min day?1) shows that the direction of photoperiodic change does not affect the diapause determination.  相似文献

At 25 degrees C and under a long-day photoperiod, all 5th instar Psacothea hilaris larvae pupate at the next molt. Under a short-day photoperiod, in contrast, they undergo one or two additional larval molts and enter diapause; the 7th instar larvae enter diapause without further molt. The changes in hemolymph juvenile hormone (JH III) titers, JH esterase activity, and ecdysteroid titers in pupation-destined, pre-diapause, and diapause-destined larvae were examined. JH titers of the 5th instar pupation-destined larvae decreased continuously from 1.3 ng/ml and became virtually undetectable on day 13, when JH esterase activity peaked. Ecdysteroids exhibited a small peak on day 8, 1 day before gut purge, and a large peak on day 11, 2 days before the larvae became pre-pupae. The two ecdysteroid peaks are suggested to be associated with pupal commitment and pupation, respectively. JH titers of the 5th instar pre-diapause larvae were maintained at approximately 1.5 ng/ml for 5 days and then increased to form a peak (3.3 ng/ml) on day 11. JH esterase activity remained at a low level throughout. Ecdysteroid levels exhibited a large peak of 40 ng/ml on day 18, coincident with the larval molt to the 6th instar. JH titers of the 7th instar diapause-destined larvae peaked at 1.9 ng/ml on day 3, and a level of approximately 1.1 ng/ml was maintained even 30-60 days into the instar, when they were in diapause. Ecdysteroid titers remained approximately 0.02 ng/ml. Diapause induction in this species was suggested to be a consequence of high JH and low ecdysteroid titers.  相似文献

The role of photoperiod and temperature in the induction of overwintering diapause inPhyllonorycter blancardella (F.) (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) was examined in the laboratory and field using leafminers from commercial apple orchards in Ontario, Canada.P. blancardella exhibited a long-day response to photoperiod: long daylengths resulted in uninterrupted development whereas short daylengths induced diapause. The estimated critical photoperiod for diapause induction was L14.25∶D9.75. The larvae of leafminers destined to enter diapause took ca. 3× longer to complete development than the larvae of non-diapausing leafminers. The development prolonging effect of photoperiod decreased with decreasing daylength. Temperature modified the diapause inducing effect of photoperiod. At L14.25∶D9.75, diapause incidence was similar at 15 and 20°C but was lower at 25°C. Photoperiod also altered the normal relationship between development rate and temperature. At L14.25∶D9.75, the duration of larval development of diapausing leafminers was similar at 15, 20 and 25°C. Temperature alone is unlikely to have a role in the induction of diapause because leafminers exposed to natural late summer and fall temperature regimes and L16∶D8 did not enter diapause.  相似文献

The effect of daylength and temperature on the regulation of the larval diapause of a central Missouri population of the sunflower moth, Homoeosoma electellum, was examined. Fully grown fourth-instar larvae exhibit a facultative diapause. Measurements of the effect of photoperiod on diapause induction revealed critical photoperiods of about 13 h 30 min light/day at 20°C, and between 11 h 45 min and 12 h light/day at 23°C. Third and fourth-instar larvae were shown to be the main sensitive stages for diapause determination. Daylength was also shown to be an important regulator of the rate of diapause development. A short day of LD 10:14 h permitted only a low rate of diapause development, whereas long days of LD 14:10 h and LD 16:8 h accelerated diapause development at 25 and 30°C. When long days were alternated with short days at 30°C the accelerating effect of long days on diapause development was not found. Systematic transfers of chilled diapausing larvae revealed an accelerated diapause development in groups transferred from 10 to 30°C LD 10:14 h, but diapause development was not accelerated in groups transferred from 10 to 30°C LD 16:8 h.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The interaction of photoperiod and temperature in the regulation of the induction and termination of the larval diapause of the Southwestern corn borer, Diatraea grandiosella Dyar (Lepidoptera), was examined. A population originating from south-eastern Missouri had critical daylengths for diapause induction of about 15h 5min (ecological threshold) and llh (physiological threshold). The ecological threshold was more stable than was the physiological threshold at temperatures lower than 25°C. Above 25°C the diapause response was suppressed. The insect appears to measure photoperiods in a stationary manner since a stepwise increase or decrease in photoperiod did not affect the incidence of diapause. In the critical region of the photoperiodic response curve, a higher incidence of diapause was found among females than among males. Females entered diapause later than did males, but resumed active development earlier than males. The rate of diapause development was more temperature dependent than was the rate of diapause induction, yet it was also clearly under photoperiodic control. The temperature coefficient (Q10) for this process was about 4. Several other factors including sex-linkage, age, and geographic adaptations are involved in controlling the rate of diapause development, even more so than they are in controlling diapause induction. In the laboratory, the intensity of diapause declined gradually without larvae being exposed to non-diapause inducing conditions. Incubation of field-collected larvae revealed that their sensitivity to diapause maintaining photoperiods had ended by January. Three generations of selection of a Mississippi population of D. grandiosella at 30°C and LD 12:12 led to the production of an essentially diapause-free strain and a diapause strain.  相似文献

Abstract. .The effects of photoperiod and low temperature on diapause termination in the yellow-spotted longicorn beetle, Psacothea hilaris (Pascoe) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), were examined using a population from Ino, Japan. Diapausing insects obtained by rearing larvae under short daylength (12 or 13 h) at 25oC were subjected to various treatments. When the photoperiod was changed at the same temperature, diapausing larvae showed a long-day response with a critical daylength between 13.5 and 14h. The diapause was terminated and consequently pupation occurred if the daylength was longer than 13.5 h. Chilling the diapausing larvae at 10oC for 30 or more days also terminated diapause in most larvae irrespective of the photoperiods during and after chilling treatment. In contrast, the post-chilling photoperiod had a critical effect on development of diapausing larvae chilled for only 15 days.  相似文献

The occurrence of diapause and quiescence was investigated in Argas reflexus engorged larvae, nymphs I and nymphs II. For diapause experiments, larvae were maintained at five different locations: at constant 20°C long day (LD; 17 h light:7 h dark) or short day (SD; 10 h light:14 h dark), at two locations with natural photoperiod and temperature and at one location with natural photoperiod but constant 15°C. At 20°C, diapause incidence was low in physiologically young larvae, increased with larval age, and then decreased to zero in specimens of increased physiological age. This pattern, observed both at constant LD and SD, suggests that the propensity to diapause changes with the physiological age of the unfed larva. The duration of diapause decreased with increasing larval physiological age at all locations, resulting in a seasonally synchronized moulting pattern. The results suggest that A. reflexus larvae are photoperiodically sensitive both before and after feeding and that decreasing daylengths may be particularly strong inductive stimuli. The developmental zero and thermal constant of the larvae were determined as 13.24°C and 220 degree-days, respectively. Degree-day measurements revealed that larval A. reflexus may enter a diapause of different length when fed between August and December and kept at natural daylength. Development of engorged nymphs I and nymphs II, but not of larvae, was ultimatively restricted at a temperature of 37.5°C, but immediately resumed at 25°C, demonstrating the occurrence of quiescence at high temperatures. Similarly, at a low temperature of 15°C, many nymphs I and II did not develop within 58 months, but did so successfully after transfer to 25°C, without additional food intake. At 22°C and under a long-day photoperiod of L:D 16:8, all the last fifth instar Loxostege sticticalis larvae undergo prepupal stage and pupate without diapause. Under a short-day photoperiod of L:D 12:12, in contrast, they all enter diapause with approximately 36 days diapause maintenance and then terminate diapause spontaneously, although only 44% of the larvae terminated diapause successfully. Changes in hemolymph juvenile hormone (JH I) titers of diapause-destined larvae across diapause induction, maintenance and termination were examined using HPLC, and were compared with those of non-diapause-destined larvae from the fifth instar through pupation. JH I titer of the earliest fifth instar diapause-destined larvae remained at a high level with a peak of 220.4 ng/ml, though it decreased continuously to a minimum of 69.0 ng/ml on day 5 in the fifth instar when the larvae stopped feeding to enter diapause. During the diapause maintenance, JH I titer of the mature larvae increased significantly and maintained a high level until day 31 in prepupae. JH I titer declined and fluctuated at low level from 5 days before pupation. In contrast, JH I titer of both the fifth instar non-diapause-destined larvae and prepupae remained and fluctuated at low level consistently, as well as decreased before pupation. These results indicate that diapause induction and maintenance in this species might be a consequence of high JH, whereas diapause termination can be attributed to low JH titer, which was in agreement with the hormonal regulation observed in many other larval-diapausing insects.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The incidence of diapause in larvae of Plodia interpunctella and Ephestia elutella held under two light systems was examined. Both systems progressively shortened the photophase of 24-h cycles, one with a motorized dimming switch providing dawns and dusks about 1 h long, the other switching the lights instantaneously. The mean critical photoperiod for P. interpunctella was about 131/4 h and for E. elutella just over 14 h. In both species light intensities as low as 0.2 lx influenced the induction of diapause. In P. interpunctella the critical photoperiod and sensitivity to light were similar at 23.±.;5°C and 20.5±0.5°C. At 22.5°C the percentage of diapausing larvae of E. elutella increased from 2% in long photoperiods (> 15 h light), to 100% in short photo-periods (t 12.5h light). Fox P. interpunctella , at 22.5°C the percentage increased from zero in long photoperiods (> 14 h light) to about 98% in short photoperiods (< 11.5h light), and at 20°C from 12% to 100% over a similar photoperiodic range. Similar results were obtained under selected fixed photoperiods, switched on or off instantaneously.  相似文献

Summary In nondiapause adults raised under a long-day photoperiod, the critical daylength for diapause induction was between 13 and 14 h although some individuals did not respond to the short-day photoperiod and went on laying eggs. In postdiapause adults in which LD 1311 induced the first diapause (L13 insects), the critical daylength for diapause reinduction was between 13 and 14 h, whereas it was between 12 and 13 h in postdiapause adults in which LD 1014 induced the first diapause (L10 insects). Under LD 1311, a small proportion of L10 insects went into the second diapause after great delay as compared with L13 insects. Under LD 1014, on the other hand, L10 insects went into the second diapause more rapidly than L13 insects. Therefore, the photoperiod which had induced the first diapause affected the photoperiodic induction of the second diapause not only in the critical daylength but also in the speed of response. In Riptortus clavatus, the photoperiodic history influences the subsequent photoperiodic response even after a physiological state induced by the previous photoperiod was terminated completely.Abbreviations L13 insects postdiapause adults in which LD 1311 induced the first diapause - L10 insects postdiapause adults in which LD 1014 induced the first diapause  相似文献

The larvae of Sesamia nonagrioides (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) grown at 25 degrees C and long photoperiod (16:8h light:dark) pupate in the 5th or 6th (mostly) larval instar, while the larvae reared under a short photoperiod (12:12h) enter diapause during which they consume some food and undergo up to 12 (usually 3-4) stationary larval molts. Diapause programming includes an increase of juvenile hormone (JH) titer in the hemolymph from about 20 to 50 nM in the 4th and 5th instar larvae (titer in earlier instars was not measured). JH I, II, and III are present in approximate ratio 1-2:10:1. The JH titer drops to zero before pupation but remains around 20 nM during diapause. Perfect extra larval molts associated with a body weight increase can be induced in the non-diapausing larvae with a JH analogue (JHA). The weight rise is due to accumulation of reserves and not to a general body growth. The timing of extra molts is similar to the molting pattern of the diapausing larvae only when JHA is present since early larval instars. In the diapausing larvae, JHA application affects neither molting periodicity nor the body weight. It is concluded that (1) Increased JH titer in early larval instars is a part of diapause programming; (2) The extension of larval stage in the diapausing larvae, but not the timing pattern of extra molts, is due to continuously high JH titer; (3) The diapause program includes low food intake, maintenance of a certain body weight, and periodic larval molts.  相似文献

To determine the larval diapause and the effect of photoperiod on development in Monochamus urussovi (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), larvae were reared on Abies sachalinensis and Picea jezoensis logs and bolts. Larvae stopped developing in the final instar at 25°C and 16L : 8D (16 h light and 8 h dark) whereas an exposure to 5°C in the dark (134 days) following acclimation at 12°C under natural daylength led to adult emergence. When larvae were reared under 8L : 16D or 16L : 8D at 25°C with an intervening period of chilling at 5°C in the dark (112 days), a photoperiod of 8L : 16D induced a shorter time required for adult emergence after being returned to 25°C, and smaller adult body size than 16L : 8D.  相似文献
