A detailed 3D FE model of the human neck was used to assess a possible relationship between risk of injury and cervical spine curvature for various impacts. A FE model was previously developed, representing the head and neck of a 50th percentile human with a normal lordotic curvature. The model behaviour was omni-directionally validated for various impacts using published results. For the present study, the model was deformed in order to obtain a straight and a kyphotic curvature, and for each geometry, rear-end, frontal, lateral and oblique impact were simulated. Although results showed similar kinematic patterns, significant differences were found in the distribution and peak values of ligament elongations, forces and moments along the cervical spine for the three configurations. It was concluded that the variability observed on the curvature of the human cervical spine may have a significant influence both on the behaviour and on the risk of injury of the neck during impact.  相似文献

A group of 12 healthy men volunteered for the experiment. Electromyograms (EMG) were obtained from semispinalis capitis, splenius capitis, levator scapulae, and trapezius muscles. The flexion angle of the cervical spine was precisely adjusted to 0°, 10°, 20°, and 30° relative to the horizontal, with a constant angle of the atlanto-occipital joint. The subjects made eight short (about 2 s) vertical extension forces (6%, 12%,18%, 24%, 30%, 36%, 42%, and 48% of maximal voluntary peak contraction force). For each position, the centre of pressure under the head was determine as the basis for the calculation of the external lever arm. The presence of motor endplate regions was ascertained by multiple surface electrodes. The slopes of individual linear regression lines for the root mean square (rms)-values were dependent on the existence of endplates in the area of the electrodes — endplates caused smaller rms values per Newton metres of external torque. Significant intersubject differences between regression equations could not be eliminated by the normalization of EMG-parameters and/or torques. The elimination of gravity, the continuous monitoring of positions, and the consideration of localization of motor endplate regions were essential prerequisites for the acquisition of reliable relationships between EMG of different neck muscles and external torques. Two important conclusions were derived for the prediction of torques from EMG measurements: firstly, individual regression equations which take into account the position of the head and neck should be used; secondly, normalization procedures do not justify the application of average regressions to a group of subjects.  相似文献

BackgroundTobacco use is a well-established risk factor for head and neck cancer (HNC). However, less is known about the potential impact of exposure to tobacco at an early age on HNC risk.MethodsWe analyzed individual-level data on ever tobacco smokers from 27 case-control studies (17,146 HNC cases and 17,449 controls) in the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology (INHANCE) consortium. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using random-effects logistic regression models.ResultsWithout adjusting for tobacco packyears, we observed that younger age at starting tobacco use was associated with an increased HNC risk for ever smokers (OR<10 years vs. ≥30 years: 1.64, 95% CI: 1.35, 1.97). However, the observed association between age at starting tobacco use and HNC risk became null after adjusting for tobacco packyears (OR<10 years vs. ≥30 years: 0.97, 95% CI: 0.80, 1.19). In the stratified analyses on HNC subsites by tobacco packyears or years since quitting, no difference in the association between age at start and HNC risk was observed.ConclusionsResults from this pooled analysis suggest that increased HNC risks observed with earlier age at starting tobacco smoking are largely due to longer duration and higher cumulative tobacco exposures.  相似文献

In order to quantify the effects of thinning on photosynthetic parameters and associated change in leaf nitrogen (N) contents, half of the trees in a 10-year-old Chamaecyparis obtusa (Sieb. et Zucc.) Endl. stand (36° 3′N, 140°7′E) were removed, giving a final density of 1 500 trees ha−1, in May 2004. Photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and leaf N and carbon (C) contents in the lower (L), middle (M), and upper (U) crowns were monitored one, three, and five months after thinning in both the thinned stand and a non-thinned control stand. In addition, leaves’ photosynthetic responses to CO2 concentration were simultaneously measured in situ to estimate the maximum rates of carboxylation (Vcmax) and electron transport (Jmax). Thinning increased PPFD in the L and M crowns but not in the U crown. Vcmax in both the L and M crowns of the thinned stand increased significantly in comparison with the same crown position of the control stand in the three and five months following thinning. In addition, the thinned stand exhibited an increase in N partitioned to ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO) in the L and M crowns relative to the control stand three and five months after thinning, indicating that N had been redistributed within the photosynthetic machinery. Thinning did not affect N per unit area at any of the crown positions, but significantly increased the content of N as a fraction of the total leaf dry mass in the L and M crowns three and five months after thinning. This was a consequence of a decrease in leaf dry mass due to rapid shoot growth. Thus thinning did not cause a redistribution of N between leaves. Thinning improved irradiance in the L and M crowns of C. obtusa, leading to photosynthetic acclimation. Photosynthetic acclimation in the first year mainly occurred via redistribution of N within but not between leaves.  相似文献

The supernatant of a cell line of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN), PCI-50, was previously shown to induce activation, promote proliferation and increase antitumor cytotoxicity of freshly purified human natural killer (NK) cells and CD4+ T lymphocytes [Arch Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg (1994) in press]. This supernatant was found also to promote the growth of a variety of hematopoietic cell lines, including Jurkat, THP-1, K562, NK-92 or Epstein-Barr-virus-transformed B cell lines. The Jurkat cell line was selected as a reporter cell in an 18-h proliferation assay established to measure the growth-promoting activity of PCI-50 supernatant. The presence of soluble tumor-derived factors able to induce proliferation of Jurkat cells was demonstrated in the supernatant produced by several other SCCHN cell lines but not in that produced by a gastric cancer cell line (HR) or renal cell carcinoma line (5117G8). The growth-promoting PCI-50 supernatant was shown to contain 28±0.5 pg/ml interleukin-6, (IL-6) in vitro but was negative for interferon , IL-1, IL-2, IL-4, tumor necrosis factor , granulocyte/macrophage-colony-stimulating factor and IL-12. The addition of any of these recombinant cytokines to Jurkat cell cultures did not significantly promote growth, while PCI-50 supernatant was consistently growth-stimulatory. This supernatant neither enhanced intracellular Ca2+ concentration in Jurkat cells nor induced up-regulation of activation antigens on the cell surface, although it supported growth of Jurkat cells in the absence of IL-2. The growth-promoting activity in the PCI-50 supernatant was acid-labile at pH 2 for 4 h, heat-resistant at 96 °C for 1 h and sensitive to treatments with trypsin and pepsin. Preincubation of the PCI-50 producer cells with tunicamycin or cyclohexamide reduced the level of growth-promoting activity in the supernatant. A partial purification of this activity was achieved using Amicon filtration, chromatography on concanavalin-A-Sepharose and then a hydroxyapatite column and high-pressure liquid chromatography gel filtration. The contiguous 874.423 base pair sequence corresponding to the50.0–68.8 min region on the genetic map of the Escherichiacoli K-12 (W3110) was constructed by the determination of DNAsequences in the 50.0–57.9 min region (360 kb) and twolarge (100 kb in all) and five short gaps in the 57.9–68.8min region whose sequences had been registered in the DNA databases.We analyzed its sequence features and found that this regioncontained at least 894 potential open reading frames (ORFs),of which 346 (38.7%) were previously reported, 158 (17.7%) werehomologous to other known genes, 232 (26.0%) were identicalor similar to hypothetical genes registered in databases, andthe remaining 158 (17.7%) showed no significant similarity toany other genes. A homology search of the ORFs also identifiedseveral new gene clusters. Those include two clusters of fimbrialgenes, a gene cluster of three genes encoding homologues ofthe human long chain fatty acid degradation enzyme complex inthe mitochondrial membrane, a cluster of at least nine genesinvolved in the utilization of ethanolamine, a cluster of thesecondary set of 11 hyc genes participating in the formate hydrogenlyasereaction and a cluster of five genes coding for the homologuesof degradation enzymes for aromatic hydrocarbons in Pseudomonasputida. We also noted a variety of novel genes, including twoORFs, which were homologous to the putative genes encoding xanthinedehydrogenase in the fly and a protein responsible for axonalguidance and outgrowth of the rat, mouse and nematode. To investigate the properties of a pure liquid ordered (Lo) phase in a model membrane system, a series of saturated phosphatidylcholines combined with cholesterol were examined by variable temperature multinuclear (1H, 2H, 13C, 31P) solid-state NMR spectroscopy and x-ray scattering. Compositions with cholesterol concentrations>or=40 mol %, well within the Lo phase region, are shown to exhibit changes in properties as a function of temperature and cholesterol content. The 2H-NMR data of both cholesterol and phospholipids were used to more accurately map the Lo phase boundary. It has been established that the gel-Lo phase coexistence extends to 60 mol % cholesterol and a modified phase diagram is presented. Combined 1H-, 2H-, 13C-NMR, and x-ray scattering data indicate that there are large changes within the Lo phase region, in particular, 1H-magic angle spinning NMR and wide-angle x-ray scattering were used to examine the in-plane intermolecular spacing, which approaches that of a fluid Lalpha phase at high temperature and high cholesterol concentrations. Although it is well known for cholesterol to broaden the gel-to-fluid transition temperature, we have observed, from the 13C magic angle spinning NMR data, that the glycerol region can still undergo a "melting", though this is broadened with increasing cholesterol content and changes with phospholipid chain length. Also from 2H-NMR order parameter data it was observed that the effect of temperature on chain length became smaller with increasing cholesterol content. Finally, from the cholesterol order parameter, it has been previously suggested that it is possible to determine the degree to which cholesterol associates with different phospholipids. However, we have found that by taking into account the relative temperature above the phase boundary this relationship may not be correct.  相似文献
