In birds, the link between parental care behaviour and prolactin release during incubation persists after hatching in altricial birds, but has never been precisely studied during the whole rearing period in precocial species, such as ducks. The present study aims to understand how changes in parental care after hatching are related to circulating prolactin levels in mallard hens rearing ducklings. Blood was sampled in hens over at least 13 post-hatching weeks and the behaviour of the hens and the ducklings was recorded daily until fledging. Contacts between hens and the ducklings, leadership of the ducklings and gathering of them steadily decreased over post-hatching time. Conversely, resting, preening and agonistic behaviour of hens towards ducklings increased. Plasma prolactin concentrations remained at high levels after hatching and then fell after week 6 when body mass and structural size of the young were close to those of the hen. Parental care behaviour declined linearly with brood age, showed a disruption of the hen-brood bond at week 6 post-hatching and was related to prolactin concentration according to a sigmoid function. Our results suggest that a definite threshold in circulating prolactin is necessary to promote and/or to maintain post-hatching parental care in ducks.  相似文献

Summary There is a range of egg size phenotypes in Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) that has a large genetic component. It was hypothesized that egg size variation could play an important role in survival of newly hatched ducklings during their first few days out of the nest when they are most susceptible to thermal stress and starvation. Precocial young must be physiologically capable of maintaining homeothermy in order to spend adequate time foraging. Duckling size at hatching was highly correlated with egg mass, and those hatching from heavier eggs were able to maintain homeothermy at colder environmental temperatures than those from lighter eggs. Heavy ducklings had significantly lower mass-specific cooling rates, but lower critical temperature did not vary significantly among ducklings of different size. Although insulation and energy reserves were not proportionally greater in larger ducklings, those hatching from heavier eggs can survive starvation longer than those from lighter eggs. The relative cold tolerance of young from light and heavy eggs will affect the ratio of time spent foraging to time spent being brooded by the female parent. Although there is no direct evidence that selection is acting on egg size, variation in this trait within a population could be maintained by fluctuating environmental conditions at hatch.  相似文献

The survival of common goldeneye Bucephala clangula ducklings during their first week of life was studied in relation to hatching date, brood size, female condition, and weather (temperature and precipitation) during the first week post-hatch by using data from radio-marked females and their broods. Also, age-specific variation in the survival of the young was determined until fledging (over 50 d of age). Survival was lowest in the first week after hatching. Hatching date, brood size, and first week temperature and precipitation were poor predictors of duckling survival during the first week after nest exodus. Instead, the ducklings of females in a better body condition survived better in their first week of life. The results suggest that weather does not have a direct effect on downy ducklings' survival, but the condition of the female seems to be an important determinant of the survival of common goldeneye ducklings.  相似文献

Mule duck hatcheries have long reported varying degrees of unbalance in the sex ratio, with a preponderance of male mules at hatching. The aim of the present study was to assess the distributions of sex ratios at various stages of development in embryos originating from intra- and intergeneric crosses between parental lineages (Muscovy male x Muscovy female, Pekin male x Pekin female, Muscovy male x Pekin female or Mule, and Pekin male x Muscovy female or Hinny). In Experiment I, embryo sexing was performed on Days 1 and 5 of incubation (by multiplex PCR) and at hatching (by vent observation). The sex ratio was not significantly modified during the early stages of embryo development whatever the genetic origin (P>0.05, Days 1 and Day 5) but our results in mule and hinny ducklings confirmed the preponderance of males among normally hatched ducklings originating from the intergeneric lineage (58.9 and 55.4% males in mules and hinnies, respectively; P<0.05 in both cases). Sex ratio (vent sexing) in second grade (cull) ducklings revealed that 68% of these ducklings were females (P<0.05). In Experiment II, the distribution of sex ratio was also performed in mule duck eggs from 6 batches (400,000 eggs/batch) first examined for fertility (candling) on Day 18 of incubation. These results indicate that the percentage of males present in the population of normally hatched ducklings increases when fertility decreases. In addition, this experiment also revealed that 83.7-90.5% of viable male mule embryos develop up to hatching, compared to only 43.0-51.0% of female mule embryos. Given that a deviation in sex ratio during the first stages of incubation is unlikely (Experiment I), it is concluded that the skewed sex ratio of mule ducks at hatching is primarily due to increased late mortality in female mule embryos occurring between egg transfer and hatching. This mortality originated, at least in part, from the intergeneric origin of female mules, and was marked to a greater or lesser extent depending on the initial success of fertilization in a given batch, a possible indication that the initial quality of gametes may selectively exert its influence at the later stages of embryo development.  相似文献

Ducklings reared by a hen swim with dry plumage a day or two after hatching, while incubator-hatched ducklings of the same age may sink and even drown when placed in water. The common interpretation is that wild-reared chicks receive preen oil from the parent, and this oil makes them more waterproof. Using mallard ducklings Anas platyrhynchos we tested the effect of preen and other oils, as well as hydrophilic or surfactant contaminants, on the water resistance of down. We found that the true cause for the difference between incubator and hen-reared ducklings is the presence of hydrophilic hatching fluid residues in the down of incubator-hatched ducklings. Once well rinsed and dried, incubator-hatched ducklings can swim for over an hour with essentially dry down. Other tests showed that clean down is quite water resistant, and that water resistance was not improved by preen or other oils. Small amounts of preen or other oils had no effect on water repellency or wetting during surface swimming. However, oil decreased the hydraulic pressure needed to penetrate down. Down lacks the stabilizing interlocking structure of adult contour feathers, and small amounts of oil apparently cause barbules to stick together and reduce the effective number of down fibers. Detergent decreases water repellency and increases water retention, and has a more severe effect on oiled down or when applied in combination with oil. The penetration pressure of a clean down coat, 866±154 Pa, could allow static immersion to ca. 8cm before water would saturate the down and increase thermal conductance. Thus, clean ducklings have a 2×–3× safety margin for surface swimming. Saturation increases the thermal conductance of the down coat from 14.3±1.38 W/m2-°C to 193±25 W/m2-°C. Thus, water pollution or down contamination causing wetting can significantly increase energy use and the frequency of hypothermia.  相似文献

Vocal communication appears to play an important role in maintaining group cohesion in broods of Peking ducklings (Anas platyrhynchos). In order to describe the development of the vocal repertoire of the young, the present study examined the vocalizations of six ducklings from several hours before hatching through 48 h posthatching. Vocalizations were recorded in standardized situations in the laboratory, including the presence of conspecific peers, exposure to maternal calls, and social isolation. A major methodological aim of the present study was to determine whether the vocal repertoire of the ducklings would sort itself on objectively measured acoustic features without the necessity of experimenter preclassification (as has been relied upon in the past). This objective procedure produced two acoustically distinct (and conventional) types: (a) contentment calls, which have short note durations, fast repetition rates, and low pitch, and are elicited by the presence of peers and/or the maternal call; (b) distress calls, with longer note durations, slower repetition rates, and higher pitch, which are uttered in social isolation and emerge in mature form only after hatching. A simple physiological model based on respiratory activity is proposed to account for the acoustic variation between the two vocalization types.  相似文献

Malic enzyme [L-malate-NADP oxidoreductase (decarboxylating), EC 1.1.1.40] and fatty acid synthase activities were barely detectable in the uropygial gland of duck embryos until 4 or 5 days before hatching, when they began to increase. These activities increased about 30- and 140-fold, respectively, by the day of hatching. Malic enzyme and fatty acid synthase activities were also very low in embryonic liver. However, hepatic malic enzyme activity did not increase until the newly hatched ducklings were fed. Hepatic fatty acid synthase began to increase the day before hatching and the rate of increase in enzyme activity accelerated markedly when the newly hatched ducklings were fed. Starvation of newly hatched or 12-day-old ducklings had no effect on the activities of malic enzyme and fatty acid synthase in the uropygial gland but markedly inhibited these activities in liver. Changes in the concentrations of both enzymes and in the relative synthesis rates of fatty acid synthase correlated with enzyme activities in both uropygial gland and liver. Developmental patterns for sequence abundance of malic enzyme and fatty acid synthase mRNAs in uropygial gland and liver were similar to those for their respective enzyme activities. Starvation of 4-day-old ducklings had no significant effect on the abundance of these mRNAs in uropygial gland but caused a pronounced decrease in their abundance in liver. It is concluded that developmental and nutritional regulation of these enzymes is tissue specific and occurs primarily at a pretranslational level in both uropygial gland and liver.  相似文献

The consequences of avian egg-size variation on offspring quality and survival remain unclear. We evaluated the effects of egg-size and hatch-date variation on survival of Lesser Scaup Aythya affinis ducklings in the wild. Duckling mass at hatching increased significantly with increasing egg size. Ducklings from larger eggs survived better than those from smaller eggs. We suspect that ducklings from larger eggs survived better because of advantages associated with larger or more efficient utilization of nutrient reserves, or both. We were unable to detect any within-clutch differences in egg size of survivors and non-survivors, nor any consistent direction in the difference in egg size between survivors and nonsurvivors within clutches. This suggests that within-clutch variation may be insufficient to have survival consequences for offspring. In addition, ducklings that hatched later in the breeding season had a higher probability of survival. We suggest a food-dependent hypothesis as an explanation for the seasonally increasing survival and for later nest initiation of Lesser Scaup compared with other North American ducks.  相似文献

The ontogeny of deep-body cold sensitivity was studied in 1 to 12 days old Pekin ducklings Anas platyrhynchos. Deep-body cold sensitivity was determined by means of thermodes implanted in the abdominal cavity. The thermodes were perfused with cold water for 15-min periods to lower the core temperature. Cooling of the body core elicited increases in metabolic rate and vasoconstrictions in the legs of all the ducklings. From the changes induced in metabolic rate and core temperature, deep-body cold sensitivity values of between −5.17 and −6.36 W · kg−1 · °C−1, were estimated. These values, which are in the range of those reported previously for adult Pekin ducks, did not change with age, and it is concluded that deep-body cold sensitivity is fully developed at hatching. Our next aim was to investigate whether the autonomic responses elicited by exposure of ducklings to cold ambient conditions could be explained by temperature changes within the body core. During cold exposure, the increase in metabolic rate was not accompanied by a concomitant decrease in core temperature. On the contrary, deep-body temperature increased slightly during the initial phase of cold exposure. The ducklings attained a metabolic rate amounting to 85–90% of their peak metabolic rate before the core temperature fell below the regulated level measured at thermoneutrality. Thus, despite the findings that Pekin ducklings have a highly-developed deep-body cold sensitivity, their metabolic cold defence under natural conditions seems to be mediated primarily by peripheral thermoreceptors. Plasma concentrations of corticosterone (B), aldosterone (Aldo) and deoxycorticosterone (DOC) were measured in mallard ducklings immediately before and after exposure to acute immobilization stress. 2. Except for transient declines in B and DOC between the 4th and 14th days after hatching, the resting concentration of each hormone did not change significantly during post-natal development. 3. The stress-induced in Aldo was maximal at hatching while maximal increases in B and DOC did not occur until one day later. 4. Thereafter the magnitude of the stress-induced increases in the concentrations of all of the hormones decreased steadily and on the 21st and 28th days after hatching only B increased significantly in response to stress.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   Investigators studying the relationship between egg size and young size often face difficulties in assigning particular young to particular eggs. We present a new method based on the use of separate net sacks for each egg that allowed us to study this phenomenon in Common Pochards ( Aythya ferina ) without excessive disturbance of breeding birds. We found a positive isometric relationship between duckling body mass and estimated fresh egg mass ( P < 0.001). However, we found no relationship between estimated fresh egg mass and structural measurements of ducklings (tarsus and bill length, both P > 0.29). In addition, we found a weak positive relationship between estimated egg mass and the size of ducklings ( P = 0.049). Greater hatchling mass typically means a larger yolk supply, and more yolk may provide energy crucial for survival during the first few days after hatching. In addition, ducklings with longer tarsi may be better swimmers and better at finding food and escaping from predators. Although our method has certain limitations and investigators should consider risks when applying it in over-water nests or in nests with large clutches, we believe it is a reliable way to assign young to particular eggs in waterfowl and possibly other bird species.  相似文献

From 23 to 25 July 2002, 98-103 newly hatched black-bellied whistling ducks (Dendrocygna autumnalis) were observed alive at an inland saline lake (La Sal Vieja) in Willacy County, Texas (USA). Seventy-one (71%) died after showing signs indicative of sodium toxicity within 5 hr of entering the water; some died within minutes. Six carcasses were sent to the United States Geological Survey, National Wildlife Health Center (Madison, Wisconsin, USA) for analysis, and brain sodium levels of all ducklings were above 2,000 parts per million wet weight. More black-bellied whistling duck ducklings are likely to have been affected, but they were not observed after hatching.  相似文献

Mallard duckling distress calls consist of a series of stereotyped notes and are usually given in calling bouts. When two or more ducklings are separated from their brood and begin to distress call, they alternate their calls, with each bird inhibiting its own vocalizations during those of another bird. In two playback experiments we reduced the acoustic variability found in distress calls and examined the effect this had on the alternation response of ducklings. In Exp. 1, one treatment involved an unedited tape-recording of a natural bout of 8 distress calls. Three other treatments involved edited tapes in which (a) the original 8 calls were presented, but at a constant intercall period, or (b) a single call was repeated 8 times at the natural (variable) intercall periods, or (c) a single call was repeated 8 times at a constant intercall period. The two tapes on which the same call was repeated 8 times elicited significantly weaker alternation responses from ducklings than the two tapes on which the original 8 calls were presented; the manipulation of the intercall period had no significant effect on the alternation response. In Exp. 2, analogous manipulations were performed to remove the variability between the notes within a single distress call or between the internote periods within that call. Ducklings alternated significantly better with the unedited distress call than with the distress calls in which variability had been removed. These results suggest that the variability found within many “Fixed Action Patterns” may serve an important antihabituation function.  相似文献

The time budgets of Tufted ducklings Aythya fuligula changed radically as they matured, particularly during the first 12 days of life—the most critical time for survival. The amount of time spent skimming for surface chironomids declined during the period from hatching to 21 days. Time allocated to diving increased during this period. Ducklings between the ages 12–37 days visited land in order to preen and sleep during the day. Time spent preening on land increased up to 21 days of age and declined thereafter. Diving rate was highest in ducklings of the 20–30 day age category and declined in those older than 30 days. The amount of time spent under water on each dive, equated with diving success, increased with age.  相似文献

Age-related changes in plasma iodohormone concentrations in male and female Aylesbury and Khaki Campbell ducklings were determined between the second week after hatching and sexual maturity.
In both sexes and strains the concentration of total thyroxine (T4) and the free thyroxine index (FT41) were low during the first 6–8 weeks after hatching. A marked increase in the T4 and FT41 occurred when the ducklings were nine weeks old; T4 progressively increased over the following four weeks and remained high thereafter. The T4 concentration in both sexes was directly related to age.
Concentrations of total tri-iodothyronine (T3) were more variable than T4 but were highest before sexual maturation and inversely age-related. An age-related decline in free tri-iodothyronine index (FT31) was observed during the first nine weeks.
The possibility that these maturational changes in thyroid function may reflect changes in gonadal activity was assessed by measuring the concentration of luteinizing hormone (LH) in the same plasma samples. Although plasma LH increased with age, in all cases the increase occurred after changes in the thyroid hormones were observed. Moreover, the maturational pattern of LH was related to sex and strain whereas thyroid function was unaffected by sex or strain.
These results demonstrate reciprocal changes in plasma T3 and T4 levels in ducks during sexual development, although the stimuli responsible and physiological significance are uncertain.  相似文献

Two frequent assumptions about the evolution of long-distance migration in birds are that they travel long distances annually to reach food-rich areas for breeding, and that they time their migratory journey to be at staging sites when the latter provide the best feeding conditions. These assumptions have rarely been properly tested, and there is no study in which a species’ major food types have been measured by standardized methods throughout a flyway and over a large part of the year. We here present such data for Eurasian teal (Anas crecca), converted to a common energetic currency, and collected at wintering, spring staging and breeding sites. Teal did not time migration to maximize local food abundance; most birds left wintering and spring staging sites before a sharp increase in invertebrate food abundance occurred. On the other hand, hatching of ducklings coincided with a peak in invertebrate food abundance on boreal breeding lakes. Mean overall food abundance (invertebrates and seeds combined) did not differ between wintering sites in southern France and breeding sites in northern Sweden at the time of breeding. Our results are inconsistent with the hypothesis that long-distance migration in dabbling ducks has evolved because adult birds gain an immediate pay-off in increased food abundance by flying north in spring. However, our data confirm a selective advantage for breeding at higher latitudes, because hatching of ducklings may coincide with a peak in invertebrate emergence and because longer days may increase the duration of efficient foraging.  相似文献

Red-breasted Mergansers Mergus serrator were counted in the river North Esk, Scotland, and on the sea nearby, 1987–1990. Pairs arrived at the river estuary from early winter, but the main influx to freshwater took place in late April and in May, when breeding pairs dispersed far upriver. Females began incubation from late May. Most young hatched in July and fledged by late September. Males left the river in June and congregated at an offshore moulting site, their numbers peaking in August, and dispersed rapidly in September.
Breeding density and total duckling production decreased with increasing distance upstream, decreasing river width and increasing gradient and elevation. The total number of breeding pairs and their distribution on the river were similar from year to year, despite variable numbers killed, suggesting a stable breeding population near the upper limit the habitat would support in those years. It also suggested that killing mergansers in April was an ineffective way to reduce the population. The spatial variation in merganser breeding density was not correlated with the density of their main spring food, parr of salmon Salmo salar , but could have been related to its availability.
The production of well-grown ducklings varied annually and was inversely correlated with river flow during the main period of hatch. It is argued that Red-breasted Mergansers breed late in the year because the hatching of ducklings in July coincides with an abundance of their food, large aquatic invertebrates and tiny juvenile fish.  相似文献

Incubation temperature is an important maternal effect in birds that can influence numerous offspring traits. For example, ducklings from eggs incubated at lower temperatures have lower growth rates, protein content, and are in poorer body condition than ducklings from eggs incubated at higher temperatures. Based on these observations, we predicted that incubation temperature would indirectly influence performance through its direct effects on body size. Wood duck (Aix sponsa) eggs were incubated at three ecologically relevant temperatures (35, 35.9, 37°C). After hatching, all ducklings were housed under identical conditions and were subjected to aquatic and terrestrial racing trials at 15 and 20 days posthatch (dph). Contrary to our prediction, incubation temperature did not influence most duckling body size parameters at 15 or 20?dph. However, incubation temperature did have a strong influence on locomotor performance independent of body size and body condition. Ducklings hatched from eggs incubated at the lowest temperature had significantly reduced maximum aquatic swim velocity than ducklings from higher temperatures. Maximum terrestrial sprint velocity followed a similar pattern, but did not differ statistically among incubation treatments. To our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate that slight changes in incubation temperature can directly affect locomotor performance in avian offspring and thus provide a significant source of phenotypic variation in natural wood duck populations.  相似文献

Laboratory‐validated data on the survival, development and hatching responses of fertilized Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus eggs from the northern Japan stock were determined through an incubation experiment. The optimum temperature for survival until hatching ranged from 4 to 8° C. No significant difference in development rates was found between the populations from Mutsu Bay, Japan, and western Canadian coastal waters even though the samples may belong to different G. macrocephalus stocks. Gadus macrocephalus larvae hatched asynchronously from egg batches despite incubation under the same environment during their development. Both incubation temperature and temperature‐mediated hatch rank affect size and yolk reserve. These data suggest that variations in water temperatures within an ecological range markedly influence the development rates, survival and hatching of the eggs, as well as the stage at hatch larvae of G. macrocephalus. Asynchronous hatching and the production of offspring with variable sizes and yolk reserves are considered evolutionary bet‐hedging strategies that enable the species to maximize their likelihood of survival in an environment with variable temperatures.  相似文献

Density dependence in vital rates is a key issue in population ecology but remains largely unexplored experimentally. We studied breeding success, lake use, and prey availability in wild mallards Anas platyrhynchos on small nemoral lakes in a replicated, two-year cross-over experiment in which pair density was increased. The number of wild mallards that settled on lakes prior to introductions of extra pairs did not differ between control and introduction years. Introductions led to a lake-level reduction in the number of broods observed. However, the number of stage 2+ (almost fledged) ducklings did not differ between treatments, nor did lake utilization by nonbreeding adults, broods and ducklings. Prey resource availability differed greatly among lakes, but it did not correlate with breeding success. Partialling out the possible effect of food competition from wild adult nonbreeding mallards did not change this conclusion. Our study demonstrates sequential density dependence in breeding success; introductions caused a decrease in brood number, but despite fewer broods a similar number of nearly fledged ducklings were produced. We suggest that predation and/or lake change of broods soon after hatching created these patterns. We conclude that using a single and late measure of breeding success such as fledged birds can mask regulatory processes. Implications of density dependence and its relation to individual reproductive success are understood better if breeding success is decomposed into nest success, duckling survival and fledgling survival.  相似文献
