The phenotypes and gene frequencies of 3 blood groups, 7 red-cell enzymes and a serum protein were studied in 4 caste population groups of Haryana, North India. The results indicate that the distribution of these blood markers is rather homogeneous in the 4 groups and generally resembles that observed in various populations from neighbouring North Indian states.

Three descendants of Koch, Indo-Mongolid populations, have been studied for their 12 genetic markers of blood group, red cell enzyme and serum protein. Distribution of their phenotype and allele frequencies shows some variants apart from their common alleles. Analysis on genetic material reveals very low differentiation coefficient (GST) value for the total population, and in the distance measure the Poliya and the Tiyor stand close to each other compared to other populations. Data on ethnohistory of the peoples have been discussed in the light of the results obtained from genetic analysis.

Blood specimens from Brahmin and Kamma caste populations of Coastal Andhra Pradesh, India are examined for A1A2BO, MNSs, and Rhesus blood groups. Predominance of A group in Brahmins and B group in Kammas is observed. Phenotype A2 records less than 4% in both populations. High frequencies of genes M, s, D, and e are exhibited among both populations. Statistically significant differences are found only for A1A2BO system between Brahmins and Kammas.

The dopamine D2 receptor (DRD2) gene, with its known human‐specific derived alleles that can facilitate haplotype reconstruction, presents an important locus for anthropological studies. The three sites (TaqIA, TaqIB, and TaqID) of the DRD2 gene are widely studied in various world populations. However, no work has been previously published on DRD2 gene polymorphisms among North Indian populations. Thus, the present study attempts to understand the genetic structure of North Indian upper caste populations using the allele and haplotype frequencies and distribution patterns of the three TaqI sites of the DRD2 gene. Two hundred forty‐six blood samples were collected from five upper caste populations of Himachal Pradesh (Brahmin, Rajput and Jat) and Delhi (Aggarwal and Sindhi), and analysis was performed using standard protocols. All three sites were found to be polymorphic in all five of the studied populations. Uniform allele frequency distribution patterns, low heterozygosity values, the sharing of five common haplotypes, and the absence of two of the eight possible haplotypes observed in this study suggest a genetic proximity among the selected populations. The results also indicate a major genetic contribution from Eurasia to North Indian upper castes, apart from the common genetic unity of Indian populations. The study also demonstrates a greater genetic inflow among North Indian caste populations than is observed among South Indian caste and tribal populations. Abstract

An attempt is made to study the interaction of inbreeding levels with other factors in influencing the intensity of natural selection. Results suggest that selection intensity values are high in the inbred and low socioeconomic groups of Madiga and Mala (1.545, 0.687). On the other hand, the non‐inbred and high socioeconomic group of Maheshwari shows low selection intensity (0.543). Contribution of mortality to total index of selection is greater in the groups of Madiga and Mala (1.059, 1.062) than in the Maheshwari group (0.204).

Two tribal groups from southern India--the Chenchus and Koyas--were analyzed for variation in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), the Y chromosome, and one autosomal locus and were compared with six caste groups from different parts of India, as well as with western and central Asians. In mtDNA phylogenetic analyses, the Chenchus and Koyas coalesce at Indian-specific branches of haplogroups M and N that cover populations of different social rank from all over the subcontinent. Coalescence times suggest early late Pleistocene settlement of southern Asia and suggest that there has not been total replacement of these settlers by later migrations. H, L, and R2 are the major Indian Y-chromosomal haplogroups that occur both in castes and in tribal populations and are rarely found outside the subcontinent. Haplogroup R1a, previously associated with the putative Indo-Aryan invasion, was found at its highest frequency in Punjab but also at a relatively high frequency (26%) in the Chenchu tribe. This finding, together with the higher R1a-associated short tandem repeat diversity in India and Iran compared with Europe and central Asia, suggests that southern and western Asia might be the source of this haplogroup. Haplotype frequencies of the MX1 locus of chromosome 21 distinguish Koyas and Chenchus, along with Indian caste groups, from European and eastern Asian populations. Taken together, these results show that Indian tribal and caste populations derive largely from the same genetic heritage of Pleistocene southern and western Asians and have received limited gene flow from external regions since the Holocene. The phylogeography of the primal mtDNA and Y-chromosome founders suggests that these southern Asian Pleistocene coastal settlers from Africa would have provided the inocula for the subsequent differentiation of the distinctive eastern and western Eurasian gene pools.

Blood specimens from Jalari and Brahmin caste populations of Andhra Pradesh, India, were examined for blood groups, red cell enzymes, and serum proteins. Of 33 genetic loci studied, 16 were observed to be invariant among both the castes, while common polymorphism or rare variants were observed in one or both populations for the other loci. Three rare heterozygotes at the phosphoglucoisomerase locus, two different peptidase A variants occurring once each and single cases of rare 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and transferrin variants were recorded. Also a few cases of hemoglobin AS and anhaptoglobinemia were observed. The difference in rare variants between the two castes is conspicuous but large differences in their gene frequencies at the polymorphic loci were not observed. It is pointed out that the frequency of rare variants in the tribal and caste populations of Southern India appears to be higher than observed in temperate-dwelling civilized populations.

Twenty-seven protein coding loci were examined by means of horizontal starch gel electrophoresis in samples of larvae from four populations of the stalk borer Eldana saccharina Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in Natal, South Africa. The populations were collected in two localities approximately 250 km apart. In each locality a sample was obtained from sugarcane and also from the locally most abundant indigenous host plant of this insect (Cyperuspapyrus L. in one locality and C. dives Delile - synonomous with C. immensus CB CI. - in the other). More than one allele was detected at eight of the loci in all four populations and at a further locus in three of the populations; the other 18 loci were monomorphic for the same allele in all populations. Average expected heterozygosity over the 27 loci was approximately 0.12 in all populations. Genetic distances among the populations were small, but were greater between the two populations from the indigenous hosts and the two from sugarcane than within either of these pairs of populations. Possible explanations of these results are discussed.

The genetic structure of wild common bean populations was studied in the South-Andean centre of origin of the species. Plants were collected from 21 populations in Argentina and genetic variability was assessed for molecular and resistance markers. Polymorphism was weak for phaseolin, the major seed-storage protein, and for RAPD markers, while a high level of polymorphism was observed for resistance to anthracnose, one of the most important diseases of common bean. For the three traits, within-population variability was important and represented between 43.6% and 67.5% of the total variation. Although among-population differentiation was significant for all the traits, no correlation was found between the population distances calculated from RAPDs and resistance. These results indicate that pathogen selection pressure may be an important factor influencing the distribution of variability within and among host plant populations. The extent of genetic variation and the degree of genetic differentiation among seven ethnic populations from Karnataka, India (Bunt, Havyak, Iyengar, Lingayath, Smartha, Vaishya, Vokkaliga), was investigated using four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs: IL-1A 4845, IL-1B 3954, IL-1B 511 and IL-1RA 2018) of the interleukin gene cluster. Allele frequencies varied by threefold among these populations, which also differed for gene diversity and heterozygosity levels. The average degree of population subdivision among these castes was low (F ST = 0.02). However, pair-wise interpopulation differentiation ranged from 0–7%, indicating no detectable differentiation to moderate differentiation between specific populations. The results of phylogenetic analysis based on genetic distances between populations agreed with known social and cultural data on these ethnic groups. Variation in the allele frequencies, as well as differentiation, may be attributed to differential selection and demographic factors including consanguinity among the ethnic groups. Information on the distribution of functionally relevant polymorphisms among ethnic populations may be important towards developing community medicine and public health policies.

Variation at four single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) sites of the interleukin 1 (IL1) gene cluster was investigated among 280 unrelated individuals, representing 7 caste groups from the state of Karnataka, India, and one European American community of Boston, Massachusetts. Allele and haplotype frequencies, strength of linkage disequilibrium, and signatures of recombination varied considerably among populations. Variable community sizes and traditions of consanguinity may account for the observed variation.
