The effects of rapid eye movement sleep restriction (REMSR) in rats during late pregnancy were studied on the ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) made by the pups. USVs are distress calls inaudible to human ears. Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep was restricted in one group of pregnant rats for 22 hours, starting from gestational day 14 to 20, using standard single platform method. The USVs of male pups were recorded after a brief isolation from their mother for two minutes on alternate post-natal days, from day one till weaning. The USVs were recorded using microphones and were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively using SASPro software. Control pups produced maximum vocalization on post-natal days 9 to 11. In comparison, the pups born to REMSR mothers showed not only a reduction in vocalization but also a delay in peak call making days. The experimental group showed variations in the types and characteristics of call types, and alteration in temporal profile. The blunting of distress call making response in these pups indicates that maternal sleep plays a role in regulating the neural development involved in vocalizations and possibly in shaping the emotional behaviour in neonates. It is suggested that the reduced ultrasonic vocalizations can be utilized as a reliable early marker for affective state in rat pups. Such impaired vocalization responses could provide an important lead in understanding mother-child bonding for an optimal cognitive development during post-partum life. This is the first report showing a potential link between maternal REM sleep deprivation and the vocalization in neonates and infants.  相似文献

There have been several reports that individuals with Fragile X syndrome (FXS) and animal models of FXS have communication deficits. The present study utilized two different call classification taxonomies to examine the sex‐specificity of ultrasonic vocalization (USV) production on postnatal day (PD8) in the FVB strain of Fmr1 knockout (KO) mice. One classification protocol requires the investigator to score each call by hand, while the other protocol uses an automated algorithm. Results using the hand‐scoring protocol indicated that male Fmr1 KO mice exhibited longer calls (P = .03) than wild types on PD8. Male KOs also produced fewer complex, composite, downward, short and two‐syllable call‐types, as well as more frequency steps and chevron call‐types. Female heterozygotes exhibited no significant changes in acoustic or temporal aspects of calls, yet showed significant changes in call‐type production proportions across two different classification taxonomies (P < .001). They exhibited increased production of harmonic and frequency steps calls, as well as fewer chevron, downward and short calls. According to the second high‐throughput analysis, female heterozygotes produced significantly fewer single‐type and more multiple‐type syllables, unlike male KOs that showed no changes in these aspects of syllable production. Finally, we correlated both scoring methods and found a high level of correlation between the two methods. These results contribute further knowledge of sex differences in USV calling behavior for Fmr1 heterozygote and KO mice and provide a foundation for the use of high‐throughput analysis of neonatal USVs.  相似文献

Selective breeding and natural selection that select for one trait often bring along other correlated traits via coselection. Selective breeding for an infantile trait, high or low call rates of isolation‐induced ultrasonic vocalization of rat pups, also alters functions of some brain systems and emotional behaviors throughout life. We examined the effect of breeding for call rate on acoustic parameters that are of communicative significance. Selecting for higher call rate produced calls of significantly increased amplitude and bandwidth relative to a randomly bred line. Selecting for lower rate produced calls of decreased duration. These nonmorphological, functional trait changes demonstrate enhanced communicatory potential and energy expenditure for the High line and the opposite for the Low line. This demonstration of coselection in a communicatory system suggests an underlying heritable suite of linked acoustic vocalization characteristics that in noisy environments could enhance dam–pup communication and lead to selection of emotionality traits with beneficial responses to stress.  相似文献

Males of certain species of fairy-wrens (Aves: Maluridae) emit a unique vocalization, the Type II vocalization, in response to the calls of potential predators. We conducted field observations and playback experiments to identify the contexts in which the Type II vocalization is emitted by splendid fairy-wren ( Malurus splendens ) males, and to examine social and genetic factors that influence its occurrence. In field observations and controlled playback experiments, Type II vocalizations were elicited most consistently by calls of the predatory gray butcherbird ( Cracticus torquatus ). Some vocalizations from other avian species also elicited Type II vocalizations, and the majority of these were vocalizations from avian predators. Splendid fairy-wrens are cooperative breeders, and males that responded with Type II vocalizations to playbacks of butcherbird calls tended to be primary rather than secondary males, had larger cloacal protuberances, and were older than those that did not respond. In addition, secondary males that were sons of resident females were more likely than non-sons to respond with a Type II vocalization. In another playback experiment, females responded similarly to the Type I song and Type II vocalizations of their mates. Although the Type II vocalization is emitted primarily in response to predator calls, it is inconsistent with an alarm call explanation. Patterns of reproductive success among Type II calling males suggest that it does not function as an honest signal of male quality. At present, the function of the vocalization remains anomalous, but indirect fitness benefits may play a role in its explanation.

Based on mark-recapture data, we studied the postnatal development of morphological features and vocalization of the pomona leaf-nosed bat (Hipposideros pomona). Morphological changes indicated that body mass and length of forearm followed a linear pattern of growth until 13 days of age at mean growth rates of 0.14 g/day and 1.08 mm/day, respectively, and thereafter, growth rates slowed. The length of the total epiphyseal gap of the fourth metacarpal–phalangeal joint showed a linear increase for up to 10 days, followed by a linear decrease until day 40 at a mean rate of 0.09 mm/day. Together, two equations permitted estimation of the age of H. pomona pups between 1 and 40 days. The logistic equation provided the best fit to the empirical curves for body mass and length of forearm. Studies of vocal development showed that the precursors of echolocation calls were not emitted until day 7 after birth. As the pups grew, the dominant frequency (DF) of isolation calls increased and number of harmonics (NH) decreased, whereas the duration remained relatively stable. The DF and BFM2 (the bandwidth of the terminal frequency-modulated sweep from the second harmonic) of the early echolocation calls increased; however, the NH and duration decreased.  相似文献

In female mice, Mus domesticus, reunion with a same-sex conspecific is associated with intense ultrasonic vocalization. We examined whether the palatability of a familiar food eaten by a demonstrator mouse and the motivational state of the conspecific observer could modulate the number of ultrasonic calls uttered during female-female interaction in NMRI mice. A pilot study indicated that these calls were uttered almost exclusively by the observer member of the pair. Observers were either food deprived or not deprived and demonstrators were offered either no food, a palatable diet or an unpalatable diet. We monitored both the number of ultrasounds (range 65-75 kHz) uttered and a series of behavioural parameters during the first 3 min of social interaction after 24 h of separation. Observers investigated the nose area of demonstrators fed on the unpalatable diet more than the same area of demonstrators not given food. No differences were found in demonstrators' behaviour. Ultrasonic calls were given immediately after female-female reunion and were affected by both the motivational state of the observer and the salience of the information carried by the conspecific. These results suggest that the motivational state of the observer affects ultrasonic calling towards a demonstrator conspecific. Nondeprived animals produced more calls towards demonstrators fed on palatable food, whereas food-deprived subjects vocalized more to fed conspecifics, independently of the palatability of the food eaten by the demonstrator. We suggest that ultrasonic vocalization in female mice can facilitate proximity with a conspecific and the number of these calls is modulated by the salience of the information carried by the companion. The male zebra finch produces learned song and long calls while the female does not. This difference in behavior is believed to result from the action of sex steroids on brain areas responsible for vocal production and learning. In this study, the female zebra finch was used to explore further the specific role sex steroids play in vocal masculinization. We show that estradiol (E2) treatment at birth was sufficient to masculinize the vocal behavior of female zebra finches. Thirteen of 18 females treated with E2 as nestlings produced song-like vocalizations. Fifteen of 18 produced long calls with male-typical features. The degree of masculinization varied between individuals. Of the 15 early E2 females that produced at least one type of male-like vocalization, 7 showed evidence of vocal learning from their tutors. The ability of E2 to cause masculinization of vocal behavior was age dependent: treatment from birth was most effective, treatment at 20 days of age was partially effective, and treatment in adulthood was ineffective. The effect of subsequent testosterone exposure in adulthood differed depending on the quality of the vocalization produced after E2 treatment alone. These results suggest that E2 may play a more important role than previously thought in the development of sex differences in vocal behavior. Further-more, this study demonstrates that exogenous E2 treatment alone can induce vocal learning.  相似文献

The effects of two benzodiazepine derivatives (diazepam, 0.5-1 mg/kg; alprazolam, 1.25-2.5 mg/kg) on ultrasonic calling elicited in adult rats by unavoidable aversive stimuli (footshocks) were investigated. The results show that either diazepam or alprazolam affected the duration of ultrasonic calls. In particular, a significant decrease in the length of ultrasounds was found in the group of animals treated with these benzodiazepines. The effects of diazepam were counteracted by the benzodiazepine-antagonist Ro 15-1788. On the other hand, neither a neuroleptic agent, such as haloperidol (0.5-1 mg/kg), nor an antidepressant, such as desipramine (5-10 mg/kg) influenced the parameters of ultrasonic emission in this experimental situation. The present results suggest that ultrasonic vocalization in response to unavoidable aversive stimuli could be considered as a potential new tool for studying drugs with antianxiety properties.  相似文献

Mongolian gerbils have a rich repertoire of vocalization, with at least 13 distinct types of calls observed in a single colony. The purpose of this study was to compare the communicative value of these different call types in a standardized setting. Phonotactic behavior toward vocalizations delivered from loudspeakers was quantified by means of an eight-arm radial maze. Animals were observed to stay near the sound source for longer period of time when short bent-upward frequency-modulated (bUFM) calls, which are observed during seemingly friendly contact, were presented, while animals stayed significantly longer away from the speaker when arched FM (AFM) calls, which are produced by animals under severe physical stress, were presented. Our data show that an 8-arm radial maze can be used to study the function of Mongolian gerbil vocalization and suggest that both bUFM and AFM calls have communicative purposes, increasing the probability that recipient conspecifics approach or escape from the sound source, respectively.  相似文献

1. The development of vocalization and hearing was studied in Sri Lankan horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus rouxi) during the first postnatal month. The young bats were caught in a nursing colony of rhinolophids in which birth took place within a two week period. 2. The new-born bats emitted isolation calls through the mouth. At the beginning these calls consisted of pure tones with frequencies below 10 kHz (Fig. 1). During the first postnatal week the call frequency increased to about 15 kHz, and the fundamental was augmented by two to four harmonics. No evoked potentials to pure tone stimuli could be elicited in the inferior colliculus of this age group, i.e., auditory processing at the midbrain level was not demonstrable. 3. Evoked potentials were first recorded in the second week, broadly tuned to 15-45 kHz, with a maximum sensitivity between 15-25 kHz. In the course of the second week, however, higher frequencies up to 60 kHz became progressively incorporated into the audiogram (Fig. 3). The fundamental frequency of the multiharmonic isolation calls, emitted strictly through the mouth, increased to about 20 kHz. 4. In the bats' third postnatal week an increased hearing sensitivity (auditory filter) emerged, sharply tuned at frequencies between 57 and 60 kHz (Fig. 4e). The same individuals were also the first to emit long constant frequency echolocation calls through the nostrils (Fig. 4c). The energy of the calls was arranged in harmonic frequency bands with the second harmonic exactly tuned to the auditory filter. These young bats continued to emit isolation calls through the mouth, which were, however, not harmonically related to the echolocation calls (Fig. 4b, d). 5. During the fourth week, both the auditory filter and the matched echolocation pulses (the second harmonic) shifted towards higher frequencies (Fig. 5). During the fifth week the fundamental frequency of the calls was progressively attenuated, and both the second harmonic of the pulses and the auditory filter reached the frequency range typical for adult bats of 73-78 kHz (Fig. 6). 6. The development of audition and vocalization is discussed with regard to possible interactions of both subsystems, and their incorporation into the active orientation system of echolocation.  相似文献

Different mechanisms have been proposed for encoding information into vocalizations: variation of frequency or temporal characteristics, variation in the rate of vocalization production, and use of different vocalization types. We analyze the effect of rate variation on the dual function of chip calls (contact and alarm) produced by White‐eared Ground‐sparrows (Melozone leucotis). We conducted an acoustic playback experiment where we played back 1 min of four chip call rates (12, 36, 60, 84 calls/min). We measured the response of territorial pairs using behavioral responses, and fine structural features of calls produced in response to those playbacks. White‐eared Ground‐sparrows showed more intense behavioral responses to higher than lower call rate playbacks. Both individuals of the pair approached the source of the playback stimulus faster, produced the first vocalization faster, produced more vocalizations, and spent more time close to the stimulus in higher call rate than in lower call rate playbacks. Frequency and duration characteristics of calls (chip and tseet) were similar in response to all call rate playbacks. Our playback experiment elicited different intensity of behavioral responses, suggesting that risk‐based information is encoded in call rate. Our results suggest that variation in the rate of chip call production serves a dual function in this species; calls are used at lower rates for pair contact and at higher rates for alarm/mobbing signals.  相似文献

Four juvenile rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) that were conditioned to emit a discriminative vocal response underwent unilateral and bilateral lesions of anterior cingulate gyrus in stepwise sequence. Pre- and post-lesion measures of vocal response rate and acoustical features (call duration, amplitude, and fundamental frequency) were obtained for the conditioned task and for vocalization in the home colony (spontaneous vocalization). Unilateral lesions produced little consistent change in spontaneous “coo” vocalization rate and call duration. Conditioned vocalization of the monkeys exhibited no significant change in rate at this stage, although call duration was reduced significantly. Bilateral lesions produced no further modifications in acoustic properties of spontaneous calls, while the vocal rate decreased slightly. Conditioned calls were not significantly altered in acoustic features at this stage, although the discriminative vocalization rate was significantly decreased for all monkeys. The results indicate limited control over vocal motor systems by anterior cingulate cortex, while suggesting that this region participates in initiation of voluntary phonation.  相似文献

The sounds produced by seven species of Rattus native to Australia and the Black rat ( R. rattus ) and the Brown rat ( R. norvegicus ), were investigated in the laboratory. Both audible and ultrasonic sounds were recorded and the ontogeny of the different vocalizations investigated. All nine species had the same basic repertoire of seven more or less discrete calls. Some calls varied more between the different species than did others. Similarly there were species' differences in the ease with which some calls could be elicited. Two major continua were identified, one audible and one ultrasonic. An attempt was made to put the vocalizations recorded into an evolutionary perspective.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to evaluate ontogeny of reactive nitrogen species (RNS) production by peripheral blood phagocytes in pig. Pig fetuses (55 and 92 days of gestation) and postnatal piglets (1, 3, 8, 17, 31 and 41 days after birth) were used. RNS production was measured by fluorescent probes diaminofluorescein-diacetate (DAF-FMDA) and dichloro-fluorescein-diacetate (H2DCFDA). Levels of nitration of cell proteins were established by immunofluorescent detection of nitrotyrosine. Levels of plasma nitrites/nitrates were detected spectrophotometrically by Griess reaction. Nitric oxide production measured by DAF-FMDA in neutrophils decreased during postnatal life. Spontaneous RNS measured by H2DCFDA decreased from 55th day of gestation to the 41st day of life. Phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate activated production decreased during postnatal life. Production of NO measured by DAF-FMDA in macrophages decreased from the first to 41st day after birth. RNS production measured by H2DCFDA in monocytes did not show any significant changes during ontogeny. The level of nitrotyrosine significantly decreased from the third to 17th day. Levels of plasma nitrites/nitrates gradually decreased from the 55th day of gestation to the 41st day after birth. A temporary increase in all parameters occurred after weaning, but without any significance. In conclusion, RNS production has a decreasing trend during ontogeny and is transiently upregulated after weaning.  相似文献

Females of several species of rodents are known to emit audible and ultrasonic sounds during same-sex encounters. There is very little information about factors affecting this vocalization. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of the stage of the reproductive cycle on vocalization and behaviour of adult bank vole females during various same-sex encounters. Pregnancy and lactation were studied as important phases of female life. The possible role of ovarian hormones in the emission of acoustic signals was also investigated as these hormones are known to be important in the regulation of other female social behaviour. The behaviour and vocalization of sexually naive, ovariectomized, pregnant and lactating females were studied using 10-min confrontation tests. The results demonstrate that the behaviour displayed and the emission of sounds in female–female bank vole encounters depend on the phase of reproductive cycle. Ultrasounds are produced more often by sexually naive and ovariectomized females which present mainly non-aggressive behaviour than by more aggressive lactating females. Audible sounds are emitted only occasionally by naive and by ovariectomized females but pregnant and especially lactating females emitted such calls more often, with shorter latencies and for longer than the unmated groups. Ultrasonic vocalization therefore seems to be related to non-aggressive behaviour and audible vocalization to aggression.  相似文献

Altricial mammals use olfaction long before the olfactory bulb has reached its anatomically mature state. Indeed, while audition and vision are still not functional, the olfactory system of newborn animals can clearly process distinct odorant molecules. Although several previous studies have emphasized the important role that olfaction plays in early critical functions, it has been difficult to develop a sensitive and reliable test to precisely quantify olfactory ability in pups. One difficulty in determining early sensory capabilities is the rather limited behavioral repertory of neonates. The present study examines the use of ultrasonic vocalizations emitted by isolated rodent pups as a potential index of odor detection in newborn mice. As early as postnatal day 2, mice reliably decrease their emission of ultrasonic calls in response to odor exposure to the bedding of adult male mice but not in response to clean bedding odors or to non-social odorant molecules. A toxin known to damage the olfactory epithelium in adult, the 3-methylindole, impairs the ultrasonic call responses triggered by exposure to male bedding, thus confirming the efficiency of this olfactotoxin on mice pups. The administration of 3-methylindole severely reduced the life expectancy of the majority of subjects. This result is discussed according to the critical role of olfaction in nipple-seeking behavior in mouse pups.  相似文献

High fetal/early postnatal levels of estrogen increase breast cancer risk, but the mechanisms remain unknown. Growth factors, such as transforming growth factor α (TGFα), may participate as secondary modifiers in this process. We characterized a modulatory role of early postnatal exposure to 17β-estradiol (E2) on the developing mammary gland morphology by treating intact female CD-1 mice with physiological doses of E2 (2–4 μg), human recombinant TGFα (4 μg), or an estrogen receptor (ER) antagonist ICI 182,780 (20 μg) during postnatal days 1–3. Early postnatal exposure of E2 stimulated mammary ductal growth by days 25 and 35, but by day 50 this was inhibited. The level of differentiation from terminal end buds (TEBs) to the lobulo-alveolar units (LAUs) also was reduced by day 50. The number of TEBs was increased throughout most of the development in the female mice exposed to E2 during early life. An exposure to TGFα or ICI 182,780 between postnatal days 1 and 3 stimulated ductal growth, formation of TEBs, and the differentiation of mammary epithelial structures. ICI 182,80 treatment also caused hyperplastic lobular-like structures in 54-day-old females. Thus, neonatal exposure to TGFα and ICI 182,780 induced both similar (increase in TEBs) and different (increase/decrease in lobulo-alveolar differentiation) developmental changes in the mouse mammary gland, when compared with an exposure to E2. A unique feature of the postnatal E2 treatment was that it inhibited ductal migration by days 50–54. Our data suggest than an exposure to E2 on postnatal days 1–3, possibly combined with secondary epigenetic alterations, leads to various changes within the developing mammary tree. These changes may be potential prerequisites for mammary tumorigenesis. J. Cell. Physiol. 170:279–289, 1997. © 1997 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The present paper describes the ability of benzodiazepine receptor sites to undergo light mediated-plastic changes during the early postnatal development of the chick optic lobe. The postnatal development pattern of these receptors was studied under different levels of light stimulation, i.e. normal-, light-and dark-rearing. At hatching the specific binding of [3H]Flunitrazepam was 0.23 +/- 0.01 pmol/mg protein. The developmental profile shows a sharp and transient peak of receptor overexpression between the 1st and the 2nd postnatal day in three experimental groups. Between the 2nd and the 6th day significant differences were found between the three groups, being this difference maximal during the peak of overexpression. In fact, on the 2nd day the specific [3H]Flunitrazepam binding showed an increase of 17% (P < 0.0005) and a decrease of 34% (P < 0.0005) for light- and dark-reared animals as compared with normally-reared ones. The changes in receptor density were transient since from the 6th day onward they gradually disappeared, being almost identical in the three groups by the day 15. At this moment the number of benzodiazepine receptor sites stabilized at the adult level. Scatchard analysis at the 2nd postnatal day revealed that the differences observed in the high affinity benzodiazepine binding sites between the three groups were due to modifications in the total number of binding sites while the affinity remained unchanged. The maximal number of binding sites were: 2.76 +/- 0.03, 3.40 +/- 0.01 and 1.46 +/- 0.11 pmol/mg protein in normally-, light- and dark-reared chicks, respectively; while the apparent dissociation constants were unaffected.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
