The present study is based on the measurement of concentrations of selected trace metals (Fe, Zn, Cu, Co, Mn, Ni, Cr, Cd and Pb) and thyroid hormones (TSH and T4) in blood serum of hypothyroid and hyperthyroid patients in comparison with healthy donors/controls in order to establish the imbalances of the trace metals in diseased subjects. The serum samples were digested in HNO3-HClO4 mixture and quantification of the metals was performed by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Average levels of Fe, Ni, Cu, Cr, Pb and TSH were found to be significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the serum of hypothyroid patients compared with other donor categories, while mean concentrations of Mn, Cd and T4 were significantly elevated in the serum of hyperthyroid patients compared with other donor groups (p < 0.05). The correlation pattern of trace metals in the serum of patient groups revealed significantly different mutual associations compared with the controls. PCA and CA pointed out the interferences of the toxic metals with essential metals in the serum of both patient groups compared with the controls. Most of the metals exhibited noticeable disparities in their concentrations based on gender, food habits and tobacco use for all donor groups. Thus, the pathogenesis of thyroid diseases is significantly affecting the essential trace and toxic metals balance in both patients groups.  相似文献

Hepatitis C is one of the common types of chronic liver disease, and its plausible association with trace metal imbalance has been investigated in the present study. The blood samples of hepatitis C patients and healthy donors were analysed for trace metals (Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Pb, and Zn) by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry after wet acid digestion. In the blood of the hepatitis patients, mean concentrations of essential metals, Na, K, Fe, Ca, Mg, and Zn, were 918.7, 361.0, 102.5, 20.00, 24.66, and 9.429 ppm, respectively, while the mean metal levels in the blood of healthy donors were 1509, 406.8, 232.5, 28.35, 24.59, and 8.799 ppm, respectively. On the average, Cr was significantly higher, while Na, Fe, Ca, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Cd were comparatively lower in the blood of the patients. The correlation study manifested significantly divergent mutual relationships of trace metals in the blood of the patients and healthy donors. Multivariate statistical methods revealed considerably diverse distribution of trace metals in the two groups. Dissimilarity in the trace metal distribution was also noted with the gender and residential location of the donors in both groups.  相似文献

In order to investigate the seroprevalence of HBV and HCV in neapolitan area, we studied blood specimens of 180 IVDAs, 115 CAH patients and 72 healthy subjects using hepatitis B core (anti-HBs) and hepatitis C antibody (anti-HCV). High frequency of anti-HBs (80.9%) and strong association with an unexpected seroprevalence of anti-HCV (67%) was found in CAH patients. Our study does not explain these results, but suggest either a possible inference between both viruses or that serum from CAH subjects contains a component that gives false positivity.  相似文献

The plasmas of breast cancer patients and healthy donors were analyzed for selected trace metals by a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometric method. In the plasma of breast cancer patients, mean concentrations of macronutrients/essential metals, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Zn were 3584, 197.0, 30.80, 6.740, 5.266, and 6.170 ppm, respectively, while the mean metal levels in the plasma of healthy donors were 3908, 151.0, 72.40, 17.70, 6.613, and 2.461 ppm, respectively. Average concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sr, and Zn were noted to be significantly higher in the plasma of breast cancer patients compared with healthy donors. Very strong mutual correlations (r > 0.70) in the plasma of breast cancer patients were observed between Cd–Pb, Cr–Li, Li–K, Li–Cd, K–Cr, Li–Pb, Cr–Co, Cu–Ni, Co–K, Cd–K, and K–Pb, whereas, Al–Cr, Ca–Zn, Cd–Sb, Cd–Zn, Ca–Mg, Fe–Zn, and Na–Mn exhibited strong relationships (r > 0.60) in the plasma of healthy donors. The cluster analysis revealed considerably different apportionment of trace metals in the two groups of donors. The average metal concentrations of different age groups of the two donor categories were also evaluated, which showed the build-up of Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Mn, Li, Pb, Sb, and Zn in the plasma of breast cancer patients. The role of some trace metals in carcinogenesis is also discussed. The study indicated appreciably different patterns of metal distribution and correlation in the plasma of breast cancer patients in comparison with the healthy population.  相似文献

High-performance ion chromatography and inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry methods have been applied to estimate the content of Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Ni in whole blood, plasma, and urine of obese and nonobese children. The study was conducted on a group of 81 Polish children of age 6–17 years (37 males, 44 females). Obese children were defined as those with body mass index (BMI) >95th percentile in each age–gender-specific group. Statistical testing was done by the use of nonparametric tests (Kruskal–Wallis's and Mann–Whitney's U) and Spearman's correlation coefficient. Significant correlations appeared for control group in plasma (Mn–Cd, Ni–Co), urine (Cu–Co), and blood (Fe–Cu), while for obese patients in plasma (Cd–Mn, Ni–Cu, Ni–Zn) and urine (Fe–Cd, Co–Mn). Sex criteria did not influence correlations between metals' content in plasma and urine of obese patients. Metals' abundance was correlated in non-corresponding combinations of body fluids. Rare significant differences between content of metals according to sex and the type of body fluids were discovered: Zn in plasma from obese patients of both sexes, and Zn, Co, and Mn in blood, Mn in plasma from healthy subjects. Negative correlations between BMI and Zn in blood, Cu in plasma, and Fe in urine were discovered for girls (control group). Positive correlation between Co content in plasma and BMI was discovered for obese boys. The changes in metals' content in body fluids may be indicators of obesity. Content of zinc, copper, and cobalt should be monitored in children with elevated BMI to avoid deficiency problems.  相似文献

Complexes of Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Pt(II) with 2.6-diacetylpyridine bis(thiosemicarbazone) (daptsc-H2) have been isolated and characterized by elemental analysis, conductance measurements, magnetic susceptibilities (from room temperature to liquid nitrogen temperature), diffuse reflectance and infrared studies. On the basis of these studies a seven-coordinate structure for Zn(daptsc-H2)(OAc)2, a six-coordinate structure for M(daptsc-H2)Cl2 (MMn(II), Co(Il), Ni(II) or Cu(II)) and Fe(daptsc-H2)SO4, and a five-coordinate structure for Pt(daptsc) are suggested. 57Fe Mössbauer spectra at 300 and 78 K also suggest a distorted octahedral structure with dxy ground state for Fe(daptsc-H2)SO4 complex. All these metal(II) complexes have been screened for their antitumour activity in the P388 lymphocytic leukaemia test system in mice and showed enhanced antitumour activity relative to the free ligand.  相似文献

Trace elements including Al, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sr, and Zn were analyzed in the scalp hair samples of women with malignant breast lesions, women with benign breast lesions, and healthy donors using atomic absorption spectrophotometric method. In the scalp hair of malignant-tumor patients, the highest average concentration was shown by Ca (1,187 μg/g), followed by Na (655 μg/g), Mg (478 μg/g), Zn (391 μg/g), Sr (152 μg/g), Fe (114 μg/g), and K (89.8), while in the case of benign-tumor patients, the average estimated element levels were 1,522, 1,093, 572, 457, 217, 80.4, and 74.7 μg/g, respectively. Most of the elements exhibited non-normal distribution evidenced by large spread, standard error, and skewness values. Mean concentrations of Ca (634 μg/g), Zn (206 μg/g), Mg (162 μg/g), Fe (129 μg/g), and Na (82.1 μg/g) were noteworthy in the scalp hair of healthy women. Average levels of Na, Sr, K, Cd, Co, Pb, Mg, Ca, Zn, Ni, Sb, and Mn were revealed to be significantly higher in the hair of malignant and benign patients compared to the healthy women; however, Fe, Cu, Al, and Cr were not significantly different in the scalp hair of the three groups. The quartile distributions of Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, and Sr revealed maximum spread in the scalp hair of malignant and benign groups; nevertheless, Al, Cu, Fe, and Zn exhibited almost comparable quartile levels in the three groups. Strong correlation coefficients were found between Fe and Cd, Al and Na, Mn and Sr, Co and Cr, Cd and Cr, Pb and K, Pb and Mn, Cu and Na, and Al and Fe in the scalp hair of malignant-tumor patients, while Fe and K, Cd and Co, Na and Co, and Cr and Pb showed strong correlations in the scalp hair of benign-tumor patients, both of which were significantly different compared with the healthy subjects. Multivariate cluster analysis also revealed divergent clustering of the elements in the scalp hair of malignant and benign patients in comparison with the healthy women.  相似文献

The relationships between chronic liver diseases and trace heavy metal contents in blood are debatable and have not been understood clearly. The present study was designed to determine the interaction of IFN α-2b with some trace elements as (Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) in patients with chronic hepatitis C, and study the effect of this interaction on the response to therapy. This study was performed on 42 patients having positive HCV-Ab & HCV-RNA by PCR and treated with interferon and ribavirin. Besides, 20 healthy subjects served as control. ALT and trace elements were determined before and after treatment with IFN-α 2b. The results showed that the levels of Zinc and Manganese in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infected patients’ were decreased compared to healthy group and this decrement became more after treatment. While the levels of Iron and Copper increased compared to healthy group and these increment became more after treatment. Serum ALT levels in the patients after treatment was statistically significant decrease (p < 0.05) when compared to its level before treatment. Conclusion: Our findings imply that the levels of trace elements (manganese, iron, copper, zinc, and Cu: Zn ratios) might serve as biochemical parameters with a predictive value for the responsiveness of patients to interferon/ribavirin therapy as there were changes in the levels of some trace elements (Zn and Mn) between responder and non-responder patients. So trace element abnormalities may reflect the condition of liver dysfunction.  相似文献

The aim of the current study was to detect HBV by Real time - PCR in chronic hepatitis B patients. Fifty-eight sera of chronic hepatitis B patients were subjected during the period March 2009 to April 2010 in Ilam cities in West of Iran. Sera assayed by real-time PCR and ELISA methods. Twenty serum samples from healthy volunteers and non-hepatitis B patients and negative for hepatitis B seromarkers served as negative controls for the study. Among fifty-eight sera, ELISA showed fifty-five (94.8%) of the samples were positive for HBsAg and three (5.2%) negative results obtained while real-time PCR specified fifty-eight (100%) positive results in chronic hepatitis B patients. HBsAg status did not necessarily reflect HBV DNA level in the serum, as 5.2% of chronic Hepatitis B patients were positive for HBV DNA but negative for HBsAg. HBV DNA was not found to be positive amongst any of the negative controls. Real time - PCR is a sensitive and reproducible assay for HBV DNA quantization.  相似文献

In order to ascertain possible correlation between alterations in trace elemental profile and the progression or regression of two most common potentially malignant disorders affecting oral cavity, namely oral submucous fibrosis and leukoplakia, blood from 60 patients from each group of patients as well from 30 healthy individuals was analyzed for elemental profiling employing EDXRF technique. Out of the 16 detected elements (K, Si, Ca, V, Cr, Ni, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, Co, and Pb), Mn, Fe, Zn, Br, and Co showed remarkable alteration in their profile in both leukoplakia and oral submucous fibrosis patients with respect to the normal healthy individuals. While Zn, Br, and Fe reflected similar changes--showing gross depletion in both the diseased groups, Mn and Co depicted inverse pattern of alterations in their concentrations in the two types of precancerous disorders when compared to the control subjects.  相似文献

The present study deals with the comparative evaluation of essential and toxic metals in rheumatoid arthritis and healthy donors. Blood samples collected from rheumatoid arthritis patients and healthy subjects were analysed for selected essential and toxic metals (Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu, Co, Mn, Cr, Cd and Pb). The samples were digested in nitric acid and perchloric acid mixture, followed by quantification of the metals using atomic absorption spectrometry. Mean levels of Ca, Mg, Fe and Zn were significantly higher in the blood of healthy donors; however, elevated levels of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu and Pb were observed in blood of the patients. The correlation coefficients among the selected metals in the blood of arthritis patients were significantly different compared with the healthy counterparts. Multivariate cluster analysis revealed mutual apportionment of the essential and toxic metals in blood of the patients, whereas, in controls, the essential and toxic metals revealed diverse apportionment. Variations in the metal levels with gender, residence and smoking habits were also evaluated in both donor groups. Relative distribution, correlation and apportionment of the essential and toxic metals in the blood of the patients were significantly different than of controls.  相似文献

Polymetallic ocean nodules offer an alternative source for extracting valuable strategic metals like Cu, Co and Ni. A novel biodissolution process was carried out, employing the cell-free spent growth medium from a marine organism (Bacillus M1) isolated from nodules; and Cu, Co and Ni solubilization from the nodules was observed to be beyond the theoretical solubility limits at near neutral pH. Different characterization techniques revealed the presence of phenolic substances in the spent growth medium, which might have formed soluble complexes with the transition metals. The low prevailing Eh redox value in the medium suggested a strong reducing environment, favoring the reductive dissolution of the oxides. A correlation study of dissolution of Cu, Co and Ni with that of Mn and Fe in the nodules was made to investigate the mechanisms of metal solubilization by the marine isolate. Under the influence of a strong reducing environment coupled with complexation by a phenolic substance present in the spent growth medium, Mn and Fe oxides were solubilized from the nodules, resulting in concomitant dissolution of Cu, Co and Ni associated with them in the nodules.  相似文献

Selected trace metals were analyzed in human malignant and nonmalignant (benign) breast tissue samples by the flame atomic absorption spectrophotometric method. In malignant tissues, dominant mean concentrations were revealed by Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, and Al at 927, 552, 231, 61.7, 36.5, 18.3, and 8.94 microg/g, respectively, while the mean metal levels in benign tissues were 903, 435, 183, 63.3, 24.7, 14.5, and 10.1 microg/g, respectively. Average concentrations of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, K, Ca, and Zn were noted to be significantly higher in the malignant tissues compared with the benign tissues. Significantly strong correlations (r > 0.50) in malignant tissues were observed between Mn and Co, Mn and Cd, Cd and Cr, Fe and Mn, Cd and Co, Fe and Co, Mg and Pb, Cd and Fe, Mg and Ni, Pb and Ni, Ni and Sr, and Fe and Pb, whereas, Cd and Co, Cd and Mn, Co and Mg, Co and Mn, Cu and Mn, Co and Ni, Mg and Ni, Cd and Cu, Cd and Ni, Ca and Mg, Mn and Pb, Cu and Ni, Fe and Ni, Cd and Mg, Co and Cu, Cr and Na, and Cd and Cr revealed strong and significant relationships in benign tissues at p < 0.001. Principal component analysis of the metals data yielded six principal components for malignant tissues and five principal components for benign tissues, with considerably different loadings, duly supported by cluster analysis. The study revealed a considerably different pattern of distribution and mutual correlations of trace metals in the breast tissues of benign and cancerous patients.  相似文献

Selective recognition of metal ions utilizing metal ion-imprinted polymers (MIIPs) received much importance in diverse fields owing to their high selectivity for the target metal ions. In the present study, a copper ion imprinted polymer was synthesized without an additional complexing ligand or complex with a broad aim to avoid the conventional extra metal ion complexing ligand during the synthesis of MIIP. The complete removal of the copper metal ion from the MIIP was confirmed by AAS and SEM–EDX. SEM image of the MIIP exhibited nano-patterns and it was also found to be entirely different from that of non-imprinted polymer and polymer with copper metal ions. BET surface area analysis revealed more surface area (47.96 m2/g) for the Cu(II)-MIIP than non-imprinted control polymer (41.43 m2/g). TGA result of polymer with copper metal ion indicated more char yield (18.41%) when compared to non-imprinted control polymer (8.3%) and Cu(II)-MIIP (less than 1%). FTIR study confirmed the complexation between Cu(II)-MIIP and Cu(II) metal ion through carbonyl oxygen of acryl amide. The Cu(II)-MIIP exhibited an imprinting efficiency of 2.0 and it was showing 8% interference from a mixture of Zn, Ni and Co ions. A potentiometric ion selective electrode devised with Cu(II)-MIIP showed more potential response for Cu(II) ion than that was fabricated from non-imprinted polymer.  相似文献

Most hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is generated from chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis. To discover new markers for early HCC in patients with chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis, we initiated our search in the interstitial fluid of tumor (TIF) via differential gel electrophoresis and antibody arrays and identified secreted ERBB3 isoforms (sERBB3). The performance of serum sERBB3 in diagnosis of HCC was analyzed using receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC). The serum sERBB3 level was significantly higher in HCC than in cirrhosis (p < 0.001) and chronic hepatitis (p < 0.001). The accuracy of serum sERBB3 in detection of HCC was further validated in two independent sets of patients. In discrimination of early HCC from chronic hepatitis or cirrhosis, serum sERBB3 had a better performance than alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) (areas under ROC [AUC]: sERBB3 vs AFP = 93.1 vs 81.0% from chronic hepatitis and 70.9 vs 62.7% from cirrhosis). Combination of sERBB3 and AFP further improved the accuracy in detection of early HCC from chronic hepatitis (AUC = 97.1%) or cirrhosis (AUC = 77.5%). Higher serum sERBB3 levels were associated with portal-vein invasion and extrahepatic metastasis of HCC (p = 0.017). Therefore, sERBB3 are serum markers for early HCC in patients with chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis.  相似文献

Accumulation of different metals and metalloids was assessed in two vegetables radish (Raphanus sativus L.) and spinach (Spinacea oleracea L.) irrigated with domestic wastewater in the peri-urban areas of Khushab City, Pakistan. In general, the metal and metalloid concentrations in radish and spinach were higher at site-II treated with sewage water than those found at site-I treated with canal water. In case of radish at both sites the levels of metals (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Mo, Cd, and Pb) were below the permissible level except those of Mn, Ni, Mo, Cd, and Pb. At both sites, the transfer factor ranged from 0.047–228.3 mg kg?1 with Cr having the highest transfer factor. The metal pollution index in soil was in the following order: As > Fe > Ni > Zn > Cd > Mo > Se > Co > Pb > Mn > Cr > Cu, respectively. While in case of spinach at both sites, the concentrations of metals and metalloids in vegetable samples irrigated with canal and sewage water were observed below the permissible level except Mn, Ni, Zn, Mo, and Pb. At both sites, the transfer factor ranged from 0.038–245.4 mg kg?1 with Cr having the highest transfer factor. The metal pollution index in soil was in the following order: Cd > Ni > Co > Se > Mn > Zn > Mo > Pb > Fe > Cr > As > Cu, respectively.  相似文献

This study demonstrates that floodplain soils of the River Wupper, Germany, are seriously contaminated with metal(loid)s. We used an automated biogeochemical microcosm system allowing controlled variation of redox potential (EH) to assess the impact of pre-definite redox conditions on the dynamics of arsenic (As), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), antimony (Sb), and zinc (Zn) in homogenized soil material taken from an acid floodplain soil. The concentrations of Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Sb, and Zn in soil solution were low at low EH, possibly due to the precipitation of metal sulfides, and increased with rising EH, presumably caused by their association with dissolved organic carbon (DOC). A significant positive correlation between metal/DOC-ratio and EH indicated that the binding of the metals to DOC shifted from stronger to weaker when EH rose. Decreasing As concentrations with increasing EH in soil solution indicated co-precipitation with Fe(hydr)oxides and/or oxidation of more soluble As(III) to less soluble As(V) during oxidation. The other studied elements seemed not to co-precipitate with newly formed Fe(hydr)oxides when EH rose, possibly due to the prevailing low pH. In the future, the specific role of DOC and sulfur chemistry on metal(loid) dynamics should be elucidated more fully, and similar studies should be conducted with additional frequently flooded soils worldwide to verify these results.  相似文献
