The passage of a radio-opaque meal was followed through the digestive system of the red rock crab, Cancer productus, using a fluoroscope. When the crabs were maintained in seawater, the food was apparent in the foregut as soon as the animals had fed. Release of food from the foregut was routinely slow and digesta appeared in the midgut only in small amounts at any one time. The foregut was emptied between 24 and 36 h, digesta was cleared from the midgut region at 36 h and by 48 h only a small amount of residual digesta was left in the posterior part of the hindgut. Contractions of the cardiac region of the foregut were somewhat sporadic and ranged between 6 and 11 min-1. Contractions of the pyloric region were more stable, varying between 45-65 min-1. In both cases, there was no change in rate during 18 h period in seawater. When crabs were subjected to both short- and long-term aerial exposure, release of food from the foregut was halted for the first 4-6 h of emersion. Although, small amounts of digesta appeared in the midgut and hindgut, there was no significant change in the amount in each region during emersion. There was a trend towards a depression of cardiac stomach contraction rates, but this was only significant in 3 h postprandial crabs during short-term emersion. A pronounced decrease in pyloric stomach contraction rate was maintained for the duration of the aerial exposure. When crabs were returned to seawater, contraction rates took 3-5 h to return to normal, but no significant change in gastric evacuation was observed during this period. During re-immersion, over 65% of the animals regurgitated the stomach contents. This regurgitation may act as a protective mechanism to avoid digestion and the subsequent specific dynamic action. The decrease in gastric processing in C. productus is probably part of an overall metabolic depression occurring during emersion.  相似文献

Females of Lampropholis delicata are dimorphic for colour pattern, the difference between morphs being the presence or absence of a distinct white mid-lateral stripe. A less distinct striped morph occurs also in males. We evaluated alternative hypotheses for the maintenance of this polymorphism by examining temporal and spatial variation in morph frequency, testing for differential selection among morphs using data on body size and reproductive traits from preserved specimens, and experimentally manipulating colour pattern in free-ranging lizards of both sexes, to assess the influence of the lateral stripe on survival rates. We found that the relative frequency of striped individuals varied among populations and decreased from north to south in both sexes, coincident with an increasing incidence of regenerated tails. Morph frequencies did not change through time within a population. Striped gravid females appeared to survive better and produced larger clutches than did non-striped females. In our experimental study, the relationship between survival and colour morph differed between the two sexes; males painted with a white lateral stripe had lower survival than control (brown stripe) males, but survival did not differ between striped and control females. The different response in the two sexes may be due partly to differences in temperature and microhabitat selection. We propose that the white lateral stripe decreases susceptibility to predators in gravid females but increases risk of predation in males, especially in combination with low temperatures. The polymorphism might be maintained by: (1) opposing fitness consequences of the stripe in males and females; (2) sex-specific habitat selection; and (3) gene flow in combination with spatial variation in relative fitness of the two morphs.  相似文献

Bumblebee colour patterns can be highly variable within species, but are often closely similar among species. The present study takes a quantitative approach to survey bumblebee colour patterns in order to address some of the most basic questions concerning resemblances: (1) do colour‐pattern groups exist; (2) are species within colour‐pattern groups geographically clumped; and (3) are some colour‐pattern groups associated with particular kinds of habitat? The results using data for 632 worker patterns from all of the world’s bumblebee species show that: (1) there are many repeating colour patterns, forming relatively few groups of species with similar patterns; (2) colour‐pattern groups can be recognized using simple rules; and (3) species within the 24 largest colour‐pattern groups are significantly aggregated in particular areas of the world. Three principal divisions of colour‐pattern groups are associated with three likely functions: (1) the darkest bumblebees are associated primarily with the tropics, where a thermoregulatory function is suggested; (2) the palest bumblebees are associated with intermediate northern latitudes, where a cryptic function in drying grasslands is suggested; and (3) the intermediate, strongly banded bumblebees are widespread, although these patterns predominate where banding may have advantages as collective warning signals to predators (Müllerian mimicry). Further studies are needed to test these explanations. © The Natural History Museum, London. The hypothesis that ornaments can honestly signal quality only if their expression is condition-dependent has dominated the study of the evolution and function of colour traits. Much less interest has been devoted to the adaptive function of colour traits for which the expression is not, or is to a low extent, sensitive to body condition and the environment in which individuals live. The aim of the present paper is to review the current theoretical and empirical knowledge of the evolution, maintenance and adaptive function of colour plumage traits for which the expression is mainly under genetic control. The finding that in many bird species the inheritance of colour morphs follows the laws of Mendel indicates that genetic colour polymorphism is frequent. Polymorphism may have evolved or be maintained because each colour morph facilitates the exploitation of alternative ecological niches as suggested by the observation that individuals are not randomly distributed among habitats with respect to coloration. Consistent with the hypothesis that different colour morphs are linked to alternative strategies is the finding that in a majority of species polymorphism is associated with reproductive parameters, and behavioural, life-history and physiological traits. Experimental studies showed that such covariations can have a genetic basis. These observations suggest that colour polymorphism has an adaptive function. Aviary and field experiments demonstrated that colour polymorphism is used as a criterion in mate-choice decisions and dominance interactions confirming the claim that conspecifics assess each other's colour morphs. The factors favouring the evolution and maintenance of genetic variation in coloration are reviewed, but empirical data are virtually lacking to assess their importance. Although current theory predicts that only condition-dependent traits can signal quality, the present review shows that genetically inherited morphs can reveal the same qualities. The study of genetic colour polymorphism will provide important and original insights on the adaptive function of conspicuous traits.  相似文献

Fruit colour polymorphisms are widespread in nature, but their ecological and evolutionary dynamics remain poorly understood. Here we examine Acacia ligulata, a shrub of the Australian arid zone which exhibits a red/orange/yellow aril colour polymorphism. We asked whether the polymorphism had a genetic basis; whether selection acted differentially on morphs during the seed and seedling stages; whether geographic variation in morph frequencies was correlated with environmental factors; and whether morphs differed in physical or chemical characteristics that might influence selection on them. When grown to maturity in a common greenhouse environment, maternal families of seeds showed phenotypic patterns consistent with biparental genetic control of the polymorphism. In contrast to other fruit-colour polymorphic species, progeny of A. ligulata morphs did not vary in rates of seedling emergence or survival in a common garden. Sampling along a 580 km transect revealed clinal variation in morph frequencies. Frequencies of the yellow morph decreased, and frequencies of the red morph increased, across a gradient of decreasing temperature and increasing rainfall. Morphs did not differ in seed mass, aril mass, or in profiles of fatty acids and flavonoids in either arils or seeds. However, morphs showed consistent differences in carotenoid profiles' and elemental content of arils, suggesting that selection by avian and insect seed dispersers, seed predators and herbivores should be investigated. These patterns indicate that both abiotic and biotic factors may contribute to selection on the A. ligulata polymorphism. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Conspicuous colour variation, caused by the influence of the environment on phenotype or by genetic differences among individuals, is frequently observed in nature. If genetic in origin, colour variation can facilitate the study of mechanisms that contribute to the maintenance of true polymorphisms. Here we describe, for the first time, the female‐limited colour polymorphism in the crab spider, Synema globosum. We looked for associations between life‐history traits and female colour morph, and identified potential agents of selection that could influence the maintenance of the polymorphism. Our results showed that the polymorphism is discrete and heritable, and that differences in colour among morphs are likely to be detectable by honeybees, birds, and conspecifics. We found limited evidence of differences among morphs in morphology and ecology, and found no differences in components of reproduction. Based on the lines of evidence obtained in this study, we suggest that selection exerted by prey, predators, and/or mates is likely to influence the maintenance of the polymorphism observed in S. globosum. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 113 , 368–383.  相似文献

The incidence of naturally occuring bacterial infection in a Connecticut population of rock crab, Cancer irroratus, varied between 10 and 60% of the population. The fluctuation in incidence was correlated significantly with hemocyte concentrations. Twelve percent of the crabs sampled during Jenuary were found to be infected with a previously undescribed Vibrio. The Vibrio was demonstrated as pathogenic over a wide range of temperatures. High mortalities in experimentally infected crabs appear to result from hemocyte clumping and extensive intravascular clotting triggered by an endotoxin. The lobster pathogen, Aerococcus viridans var. homari, was found to be pathogenic at 25°C to C. irroratus, a prey species of the lobster. Results suggest that this species can act as a reservior host for A. viridans var. homari.  相似文献

Crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) precursor-related peptides (CPRPs) are produced during the proteolytic processing of CHH preprohormones. Currently, the physiological roles played by CPRPs are unknown. Due to their large size, direct mass spectrometric sequencing of intact CPRPs is difficult. Here, we describe a novel strategy for sequencing Cancer productus CPRPs directly from a tissue extract using nanoflow liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry. Four novel CPRPs were characterized with the aid of MS/MS de novo sequencing of 27 truncated CPRP peptides. Extensive modifications (methionine oxidation and carboxy-terminal methylation) were identified in both the full-length and truncated peptides. To investigate the origin of the modifications and truncations, a full-length CPRP was synthesized and subjected to the same storage and extraction protocols used for the characterization of the native peptides. Here, some methionine oxidation was seen, however, no methylation or truncation was evident suggesting much of the chemical complexity seen in the native CPRPs is unlikely due to a sample preparation artifact. Collectively, our study represents the most complete characterization of CPRPs to date and provides a foundation for future investigation of CPRP function in C. productus.  相似文献

The evolution and maintenance of colour polymorphisms remains a topic of considerable research interest. One key mechanism thought to contribute to the coexistence of different colour morphs is a bias in how conspicuous they are to visual predators. Although individuals of many species camouflage themselves against their background to avoid predation, differently coloured individuals within a species may vary in their capacity to do so. However, to date, very few studies have explicitly investigated the ability of different colour morphs to plastically adjust their colouration to match their background. The red devil (Amphilophus labiatus) is a Neotropical cichlid fish with a stable colour polymorphism, with the gold morph being genetically dominant and having a myriad of documented advantages over the dark morph. However, gold individuals are much rarer, which may be related to their heightened conspicuousness to would‐be predators. Here, we tested the ability of differently coloured individuals to phenotypically adjust the shade of their body colour and patterns to match their background. In particular, we filmed dark, gold and mottled (a transitioning phase from dark to gold) individuals under an identical set‐up on light vs. dark‐coloured substrates. We found that, in contrast to individuals of the dark morph, gold and mottled individuals were less capable of matching their body colouration to their background. As a result, gold individuals appeared to be more conspicuous. These results suggest that a difference in background matching ability could play an important role in the maintenance of colour polymorphisms.  相似文献

Colour changes in animals may be triggered by a variety of social and environmental factors and may occur over a matter of seconds or months. Crustaceans, like fiddler crabs (genus Uca), are particularly adept at changing their colour and have been the focus of numerous studies. However, few of these studies have attempted to quantitatively describe the individual variation in colour and pattern or their adaptive significance. This paper quantitatively describes the colour patterns of the fiddler crab Uca capricornis and their ability to change on a socially significant timescale. The most dramatic changes in colour pattern are associated with moulting. These ontogenetic changes result in a general reduction of the colour pattern with increasing size, although females are more colourful and variable than similarly-sized males. Uca capricornis are also capable of rapid colour changes in response to stress, but show no endogenous rhythms associated with the semilunar and tidal cycles commonly reported in other fiddler crabs. The extreme colour polymorphism and the relative stability of the colour patterns in Uca capricornis are consistent with their use in visually mediated mate recognition.  相似文献

Periodic high spring runoff, in addition to lake surface snow and ice melt, is shown to be a major cause of sharp secondary chemocline formation in a small (20 ha) lake arid and south-central British Columbia. Initially detected in 1982 at about 1 m and enhanced by high inflow of low salinity meltwater in spring 1983, the secondary chemocline gradually deepened and broke down over four subsequent years. Associated microstratification layers (major changes within a few cm of depth), exhibited very high temperatures (> 30 °C), and very high dissolved oxygen (> 200% saturation) as well as very low (close to 0% saturation) levels. Oxygen supersaturation resulted from photosynthetic production at the microstratification boundaries. In the springs of 1982 and 1983, formation of an anoxic layer between regions of high oxygen concentration, separated the phytoplankton and zooplankton communities into two layers above the primary chemocline. The several year persistence of the secondary chemoclines and associated interface processes (concentration of particulate organic matter, bacterial decomposition, nutrient regeneration, phytoplanktonic production) attest to their functional importance in this meromictic lake.  相似文献

Most semiterrestrial, intertidal and shallow subtidal brachyuran crabs that live in tropical and warm temperate estuaries, bays and protected coasts world-wide release their planktonic larvae near the times of nocturnal high tides on the larger amplitude tides in the biweekly or monthly cycles of tidal amplitude. Crab larvae usually emigrate quickly to the sea where they develop to return as postlarvae to settle in habitats suitable for their survival. Predators of larvae are more abundant where larvae are released than where they develop, suggesting that this migration from estuaries to the sea reduces predation on larvae. Crabs with larvae that are relatively well-protected by spines and cryptic colors do not emigrate and often lack strong reproductive cycles, lending support to this explanation. Adults control the timing of the release of larvae with respect to the biweekly and monthly cycles of tidal amplitude by controlling when they court and mate and females control when development begins by controlling when they ovulate and allow their eggs to be fertilized by stored sperm. By changing the time they breed, fiddler crabs (Uca terpsichores) compensate for the effects of spatial and temporal variation in incubation temperature on development rates so that embryos are ready to hatch at the appropriate time. Control of the diel and tidal timing of hatching and of release of larvae varies with where adults live. Females of the more terrestrial species often move from protected incubation sites, sometimes far from water, and they largely control the precise time, both, of hatching and of release of larvae. Females of intertidal species also may influence when embryos begin to hatch. Upon hatching, a chemical cue is released that stimulates the female to pump her abdomen, causing rapid hatching and release of all larvae in her clutch. Embryos, rather than females, largely control hatching in subtidal species, perhaps because females incubate their eggs where they release their larvae. Topics for further study include the mechanism whereby adults regulate the timing of breeding, the mechanisms by which females control development rates of embryos, the nature of communication between females and embryos that leads to precise and synchronous hatching by the number (often thousands) of embryos in a clutch, and the causes of selection for such precision. The timing of hatching and of release of larvae by cold-temperate, Arctic, and Antarctic species and by fully terrestrial and freshwater tropical species has received little attention.  相似文献

Summary The spectral sensitivity of movement perception in Carcinus has a peak near 508 m, irrespective of the direction of the movement or of the plane of polarization of the stimulating light, although the primary sensory cells are 10 times as sensitive to light in one plane of polarization as in the plane at right angles. This balance in the input to the movement perception system breaks down with a stimulating light at <439 and at >650 m. Only one set of connexions between the primary receptors in the movement perception system agrees with all the results of manipulating the various attributes of the visual input, and this model has unique properties which allow the subsequent discrimination of each attribute of the stimulus independent of the other attributes.I would like to thank Robert Santer for his assistance with the numerous experimental observations which form the basis of this paper.  相似文献

The colour polymorphic isopod Idotea baltica inhabits the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus which is often colonised by the white epizoite Electra crustulenta (Bryozoa). In an experiment the predation risk for the different colour morphs of I. baltica was highly dependent on background colouration. Morph frequencies and Electra density varied substantially among 10 collecting sites but correlated poorly with each other, suggesting that local selection for cryptic colouration may be counteracted by gene flow. Indeed, estimates based on four polymorphic allozymes suggested rate of gene flow to be high. These results support the hypothesis that locally varying selection for cryptic colouration counteracted by gene flow contributes to the maintenance of colour polymorphism in I. baltica. The visual differences between the microhabitats and the differential microhabitat use between males and females seem to result in different patterns of selection on males and females for cryptic colouration. Also this is likely to play an important role for the polymorphism.  相似文献

Innate sensory biases could play an important role in helping na?ve animals to find food. As inexperienced bees are known to have strong innate colour biases we investigated whether bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) colonies with stronger biases for the most rewarding flower colour (violet) foraged more successfully in their local flora. To test the adaptive significance of variation in innate colour bias, we compared the performance of colour-na?ve bees, from nine bumblebee colonies raised from local wild-caught queens, in a laboratory colour bias paradigm using violet (bee UV-blue) and blue (bee blue) artificial flowers. The foraging performance of the same colonies was assessed under field conditions. Colonies with a stronger innate bias for violet over blue flowers in the laboratory harvested more nectar per unit time under field conditions. In fact, the colony with the strongest bias for violet (over blue) brought in 41% more nectar than the colony with the least strong bias. As violet flowers in the local area produce more nectar than blue flowers (the next most rewarding flower colour), these data are consistent with the hypothesis that local variation in flower traits could drive selection for innate colour biases.  相似文献

We evaluated bone mineralization and metabolism changes related to vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphic genotypes in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. One hundred and ninety eight children (82 boys and 116 girls) were included in our study. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by lumbar spine DXA. Osteocalcin, CTX, parathyroid hormone, total and ionized calcium, inorganic phosphate, total alkaline phosphatase activity was utilized for assessment of bone metabolism. Molecular testing: TaqI (rs731236) and Cdx2 (rs11568820) polymorphisms of VDR were detected by RFLP. No differences in TaqI and Cdx2 haplotypes, genotypes and alleles distribution related with normal and low BMD (Zscore <?2SD) were found. Children with low linear growth (<10th percentile) had more allele T-contained genotypes of TagI VDR (p = 0.037), compare with medium or high linear growth children. Children with high linear growth (>90th percentile) had the highest frequency of allele A-contained genotypes (GA+AA) of Cdx2 VDR (p = 0.009). Girls with TT TaqI VDR, who never been treated by glucocorticoides had lower BMD-Zscore than C allele carriers (TT = ?0.94SD [IQR: ?2.1;?0.5], TC+CC = ?0.62SD [IQR: ?1.26;0.39], p = 0.03). Girls with Tanner I with TT had higher total and ionized Ca level than carriers of C allele (Ca: TT = 2.43 ± 0.15 mmol/l, TC+CC = 2.28 ± 0.2 mmol/l, p = 0.024; Ca2+: TT = 1.15 ± 0.08 mmol/l, TC+CC = 1.06 ± 0.13 mmol/l, p = 0.026). Presence of TT genotype negatively correlated with BMD-Zscore (r = ?0.28, p = 0.04), and positively with frequency of LBMD (r = 0.3, p = 0.037). Boy with GG Cdx2 genotype had lower total Ca (GG = 2.3 ± 0.17 mmol/l, GA+AA = 2.43 ± 0.17 mmol/l, p = 0.004) compare with carriers of A allele. Pubertal boys (Tanner IV–V) with GG had higher CTX (GG = 1.75 ± 0.11 ng/ml, GA+AA = 1.06 ± 0.07 ng/ml, p = 0.04. TT genotype of TaqI and GG genotype of Cdx2 VDR is a negative factor impact bone mineralization metabolism and linear growth.  相似文献
