In an attempt to develop an efficient acoustic fish fence, we have designed an infrasound source able to generate large nearfield particle acceleration. The source generates water movements by means of two symmetrical pistons in an air-filled cylinder with 21cm bore. The pistons are driven by eccentric coupling to an electric motor, with 5cm p.p. amplitude. The piston movements are 180° out of phase. The piston reaction forces are thus opposed, leading to vibration free operation. The submergible infrasound source is operated freely suspended in the water mass. The emitted sound frequency is 11.8Hz. The particle acceleration is about 0.01ms–2 at a distance of 3m, corresponding to the threshold intensity for deterring effects of infrasound on Atlantic salmon smolts. The sound source was employed to test the effect of intense infrasound on migrating European silver eels. Fish confined in a tank displayed startle behaviour and prolonged stress reactions, telemetrically monitored as tachycardia, in response to intense infrasound. The field tests were carried out in the River Imsa. A trap that catches all the descending eels is installed near the river mouth. The trap was separated in four equal sections. During the periods with infrasound exposure, the proportion of silver eels entering the section closest to the sound source was reduced to 43% of the control value. In the section closest to the opposite river bank, infrasound increased the proportion of trapped eels to 144% of the control values. This shift of the migrating eels away from the infrasound source was highly significant.  相似文献

The effects of surface type and slope on fish passage over artificial ramps were evaluated for two small diadromous fish species native to New Zealand: the redfin bully Gobiomorphus huttoni and adult and juvenile inanga Galaxias maculatus . Surfaces tested include smooth plastic, sand, gravel (limestone chips 5–20 mm), nylon brush and two plastic moulded cores of ground drainage products Cordrain® and Miradrain®. Slopes of 15° (1:3·7), 30° (1:1·7) and 45° (1:1) were assessed. Slope was the greatest factor influencing successful passage, with the lowest gradient tested (15°) providing the highest passage for both fish species. Most ramps at 45° only allowed the passage of redfin bullies, these fish being capable of 'climbing' the wetted margin of the ramps. Because of this climbing ability, redfin bullies were not as affected by the ramp surface, as inanga. Nevertheless, the smooth plastic surface, which resulted in the highest water velocities over the ramps, was un-passable by either species at slopes >15°. Gravel, the nylon brush and the two plastic moulds provided high passage rates for inanga at gradients of 15 and 30°. At a slope of 45°, Miradrain® was the only surface inanga could pass. Overall, Miradrain® produced the most successful passage for both inanga and redfin bullies, but to maximize passage, slope should not be >15° and a wetted margin is essential for climbing species.  相似文献

This study used an experimental approach to compare the passage success of native and exotic fish species from the temperate Southern Hemisphere over an artificial baffled fish ramp designed for overcoming low-head (≤1.0 m) fish migration barriers. Passage efficiency was, on average, lower for the exotic species [koi carp (Cyprinus carpio), rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)] compared to the native species [inanga (Galaxias maculatus), redfin bully (Gobiomorphus huttoni) and common bully (Gobiomorphus cotidianus)]. Nonetheless, there was considerable variation between individual species, with rainbow trout outperforming common bully and juvenile inanga, but koi carp and rudd failing to pass any of the ramps. The differences in predicted probability of passage success between the native and exotic fish species in this study were sufficient in some cases to indicate the potential for the baffled fish ramps to operate as a selective migration barrier. Nonetheless, further testing is required to validate these results across a broader range of conditions before deployment.  相似文献

Inadequately designed culverts can be physical barriers to fish passage if they increase the velocity of water flow in the environment, alter natural turbulence patterns or fail to provide adequate water depth. They may also act as behavioural barriers to fish passage if they affect the willingness of fish species to enter or pass through the structure due to altered ambient light conditions. To understand how reduced light intensity might affect fish behaviour in culverts, the authors performed a behavioural choice experiment quantifying the amount of time individual fish spent in dark and illuminated areas of a controlled experimental channel. They found that behavioural responses were largely reflective of the species’ diel activity patterns; the diurnal species Craterocephalus stercusmuscarum and Retropinna semoni preferred illuminated regions, whereas the nocturnal/crepuscular Macquaria novemaculeata preferred the darkened region of the channel. Bidyanus bidyanus were strongly rheotactic, and their behaviour was influenced more by water flow direction than ambient light level. The authors then determined that a threshold light intensity of only c. 100–200 lx (cf. midday sunlight c. 100,000 lx) was required to overcome the behavioural barrier in c. 70% of the diurnally active C. stercusmuscarum and R. semoni tested. When these values were placed into an environmental context, 15 road-crossing (3.4–7.0 m long) box (c. 1 m × 1 m, height × width) and pipe (c. 1 m diameter) culverts sampled in Brisbane, Australia, recorded light intensities in the centre of the structure that were below the threshold for C. stercusmuscarum and R. semoni movement and could potentially be a barrier to their passage through the structure. Attention is required to better understand the impacts of low light intensity in culverts on fish passage and to prioritize restoration.  相似文献

长洲水利枢纽鱼道位于西江干流,目前是我国最大的过鱼通道,其过鱼效果评估不仅是珠江中下游鱼类资源和水生态保护的重要课题,也可为国内鱼道的设计及运行提供基础资料.2011-2014年4-6月利用堵截法对长洲水利枢纽鱼道中的鱼类进行监测,共采样11批次,采集种类累计40种,洄游性种类花鳗鲡、鳗鲡、弓斑东方鲀及四大家鱼(青鱼、草鱼、鲢、鳙)等均在鱼道中出现.鱼道中优势种为瓦氏黄颡鱼(29.1%)、赤眼鳟(16.8%)、鳖条(14.7%)、银飘鱼(12.0%)、银鮈(10.8%)、鳗鲡(7.3%)及鲮(2.7%)等.通过物种累计曲线拟合,预期随着采样次数的增加,鱼道出现的种类数量可达61种,说明长洲水利枢纽鱼道具较好的过鱼能力.监测数据显示,鱼道中鱼类多样性及均匀度指数低于坝下江段.坝下江段优势种广东鲂、斑鳠在鱼道中没有采集到,这说明鱼道对不同种类的诱导力存在差异.典范对应分析结果表明,坝上水位是影响过鱼效果的关键因素,有必要优化鱼道运行方式以提高鱼道性能.根据目前珠江的鱼类资源现状,建议将四大家鱼(青鱼、草鱼、鲢、鳙)、广东鲂、赤眼鳟及鲮等列入过鱼目标,并在运行方案上进行调整.  相似文献

The diel variation in boat electrofishing catches was investigated on the lower Murray River (south-eastern Australia), downstream of three low-level weirs. Fish assemblage composition did not differ among three sites, but differed substantially between day and night. Significantly more small-bodied species ( e.g. Australian smelt Retropinna semoni , flyspecked hardyhead Craterocephalus stercusmuscarum , bony herring Nematalosa erebi and Murray rainbowfish Melanotaenia fluviatilis ) and some large-bodied predators ( e.g. golden perch Macquaria ambigua ) were caught during daytime samples. Significantly more flatheaded gudgeon Phylipnodon grandiceps , carp gudgeon Hypseleotris spp. and perch Perca fluviatilis were collected at night. The size composition of the fish assemblage also changed over the diel cycle. Significantly smaller goldfish Carassius auratus , flyspecked hardyhead, bony herring and Australian smelt were sampled during the day, while generally smaller individuals of golden perch and the common carp Cyprinus carpio were caught at night. These findings suggest that sampling during both day and night is required to adequately characterize riverine fish assemblages in the context of fish migration studies.  相似文献

This study compared the critical swimming speed (Ucrit) and endurance performance of three Australian freshwater fish species in different swim‐test apparatus. Estimates of Ucrit measured in a large recirculating flume were greater for all species compared with estimates from a smaller model of the same recirculating flume. Large differences were also observed for estimates of endurance swimming performance between these recirculating flumes and a free‐surface swim tunnel. Differences in estimates of performance may be attributable to variation in flow conditions within different types of swim chambers. Variation in estimates of swimming performance between different types of flumes complicates the application of laboratory‐based measures to the design of fish passage infrastructure.  相似文献

Large-scale culvert replacement programs could benefit migratory fish populations by reconnecting reproductive and foraging habitats in fragmented watersheds. The objectives of this study were to: (1) identify stream and culvert characteristics contributing to fish passage barriers within an Appalachian watershed, U.S.A.; (2) quantify the total amount of Brook trout ( Salvelinus fontinalis ) reproductive habitat isolated above culverts; and (3) use an ecological currency to identify culvert replacement priorities and stream mitigation credit opportunities. We surveyed 120 state-owned culverts and used a fish passage assessment filter to determine the "passability" of each culvert. We then constructed a geographic information system stream network model to quantify the amount of trout reproductive habitat isolated by culverts. Ninety-seven percent of surveyed culverts were classified as obstacles or complete barriers to trout dispersal. Culvert impassability was higher in small streams with slopes exceeding 3–5%, suggesting a direct relationship between slope and impassability. Thirty-three percent of Brook trout reproductive habitat, representing over 200 km of stream, was isolated by culverts. This is a conservative estimate, because we did not survey privately or federally owned culverts. The top 20 prioritized culverts accounted for nearly half of the habitat loss. Our results indicate that standard culvert designs placed in streams with slopes exceeding 5% consistently produce trout dispersal barriers and should be avoided during new road construction. The process developed here provides an efficient method for identifying culvert replacement priorities and may be used to maximize watershed scale benefits of stream restoration.  相似文献

A fish protection system has been installed in a power canal at a hydroelectric facility on the Exploits River, Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland, Canada. The river has an anadromous Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)population in the order of 30000 returning adults. A louver and bypass were installed to protect downstream migrating smolt and kelt from entering the penstocks and turbines in the power canal at the generating facility. The efficiency and effectiveness of this protection system has been evaluated since 1997 through a combination of conventional telemetry, use of a digital spectrum processing (DSP) telemetry system with multiple antennae array, floy tagging, and velocity profiling along the louver array and throughout the canal. Initial monitoring in 1997 using conventional telemetry indicated low fish guidance efficiencies (FGEs) in the area of 25% for smolt. In 1998, a DSP telemetry system was installed along the louver array to attempt to identify problem areas where fish were passing through or under the louver. This work also recorded low smolt FGEs in 1998 (24.3%). However, the DSP system did identify sites along the louver array where fish were being lost, and hydraulic measurements suggested fish loss was related to hydraulic turbulence and irregularities in the guidance velocities. In 1999, a scale model of the power canal and bypass system was constructed at the University of Waterloo Engineering Department's Hydraulic Laboratory and a number of structural and operational changes to the system were evaluated. Based on the results of laboratory hydraulic modeling and DSP telemetry, a number of changes were made to the louver and bypass, prior to operation in 1999 and 2000. Monitoring of smolt out migration in 1999 and 2000 indicated a substantial improvement in smolt FGEs to 54.0 and 65.3%, respectively, and the DSP system identified areas where further improvements could be made. This paper demonstrates the utility of a sophisticated telemetry system in the evaluation of fish protection systems and how the technology can be applied towards the optimization of the effectiveness of fish by-passes.  相似文献

Migratory bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) historically spawned in tributaries of the Clark Fork River, Montana and inhabited Lake Pend Oreille as subadult and adult fish. However, in 1952 Cabinet Gorge Dam was constructed without fish passage facilities disrupting the connectivity of this system. Since the construction of this dam, bull trout populations in upstream tributaries have been in decline. Each year adult bull trout return to the base of Cabinet Gorge Dam when most migratory bull trout begin their spawning migration. However, the origin of these fish is uncertain. We used eight microsatellite loci to compare bull trout collected at the base of Cabinet Gorge Dam to fish sampled from both above and further downstream from the dam. Our data indicate that Cabinet Gorge bull trout are most likely individuals that hatched in above-dam tributaries, reared in Lake Pend Oreille, and could not return to their natal tributaries to spawn. This suggests that the risk of outbreeding depression associated with passing adults over dams in the Clark Fork system is minimal compared to the potential genetic and demographic benefits to populations located above the dams.  相似文献

River regulation infrastructure has been implicated in worldwide aquatic biodiversity loss. In‐stream barriers such as weirs prevent fish migration and the impact can be particularly severe for diadromous species. Fishways are frequently installed on in‐stream barriers to reconnect migratory pathways and rehabilitate diadromous fish populations. Sequential fishways may be necessary in rivers where multiple barriers prevent migration. We monitored a coastal fish community's response to fish passage restoration at 10 predominantly low‐level weirs in the freshwater reaches of the Nepean River in southeastern Australia. Few studies have simultaneously assessed fish community passage at successive fishways within a river system. Prior to the installation of the fishways, there was a gradient of reduced species diversity in an upstream direction including the absence of many diadromous species, despite the regular inundation frequency of most weirs. Following the installation of the fishways, species diversity was still greater in the downstream monitoring sites; however, there was evidence of a positive change in fish community structure in middle and upstream sites. Most notably, three diadromous species rapidly expanded their distribution upstream and one amphidromous species expanded its downstream distribution. This study demonstrates appropriately designed successive fishways can successfully reconnect river systems for an entire fish community, encompassing species with a broad range of swimming abilities and diverse life histories.  相似文献

鱼类能否通过水流速度障碍直接影响过鱼设施的过鱼效果。利用计算机技术,综合水力因素、鱼类行为、地理特征及环境因子,展开鱼类通过水流速度障碍的模拟,有助于过鱼设施的优化设计。以国外涵洞式鱼道模拟软件Fish Xing为切入点,结合主要模块和关键因子,对我国特有鱼类鲢幼鱼进行模拟,得到鲢通过不同水流速度障碍的成功率;对比鲢在物理模型中的游泳表现,从模型主要模块和影响鱼类游泳表现的关键因子角度,分析影响鱼类通过水流速度障碍模拟的因素。结果表明,Fish Xing软件不能精确模拟鲢通过水流速度障碍的表现。分析表明,该软件在地理要素、管道特征和水力信息等参数方面具备独特的优势,但对我国鱼类有一定局限性,主要体现在鱼类的生物学信息如鱼类游泳特征等方面存在不足;进行鱼过障碍的模拟需要深入研究目标鱼类的生理特征、游泳能力及其与水力环境因子的响应关系。  相似文献

The ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi is at the northern extreme of its geographic range in Narragansett Bay, an estuary on the northeast coast of the United States. Blooms have typically been observed in late summer and fall according to records from 1950 to 1979. We document an expansion of the seasonal range of this important planktonic predator to include springtime blooms during the 1980s and 1990s. This shift to an earlier seasonal maximum is associated with increasing water temperature in Narragansett Bay. Temperatures in spring have risen, on average, 2 °C from 1950 to 1999 with warm years being associated with the positive phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation. During 1999, M. leidyi appeared earlier in spring and was more abundant than during any previous year for which records are available. Changes in the seasonal pattern and abundance of this predator are likely to have important effects on planktonic ecosystem dynamics of Narragansett Bay. These include reduction of zooplankton abundance in spring followed by increases in size and frequency of summer phytoplankton blooms. Earlier blooms of M. leidyi may also reduce survival of eggs and larvae of fish because, as in 1999, they coincide with the period of peak spawning.  相似文献

1. The ontogenetic development of anadromous salmonids includes downstream emigration of immature individuals from freshwater towards the marine environment. Although this migration of juvenile salmonids (smolts) may be associated with severe mortalities, only limited attention has been paid to the spatial positioning of smolts in small streams. 2. Using a novel approach, this study examined the vertical and horizontal positioning of brown trout and Atlantic salmon smolts while performing downstream migration in a small lowland stream. 3. Pre‐smolts of indigenous and hatchery‐reared (F1) brown trout (Salmo trutta), and two different populations of Atlantic salmon (S. salar), were tagged with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags and subsequently released upstream of an antenna array consisting of five circular swim‐through PIT antennas. Antennas were positioned in order to determine whether the migrating smolts were bottom or surface oriented, and if they were oriented towards the mid‐channel or the stream bank. 4. During the smolt emigration period, data describing both the detection of the migrating fish and the amount of water passing through the antennas were collected. This was accomplished in order to determine if the fish were performing active positioning behaviour independently of the vertical and horizontal discharge distributions in the stream. 5. The results showed that the smolts migrated in a non‐random spatial pattern independently of the stream discharge distributions. Vertically, the indigenous brown trout and the Atlantic salmon demonstrated a preference for the bottom orientated positions. In contrast, the distribution of the F1 brown trout was not different from the discharge distribution. The latter observation suggests random vertical positioning, which may be indicative of inferior migratory performance. Horizontally, all tested smolt populations strongly preferred the mid‐channel positions. 6. The discharge‐corrected preferences for certain spatial positions suggest that smolt emigration is not entirely a matter of passive displacement in lowland streams. 7. Anthropogenically altered channels may inhibit or delay downstream emigration of smolts resulting in increased mortalities. Given that the smolts in this study actively selected spatial positions in the mid‐channel and near the bottom, it is suggested that deep, mid‐channel furrows may be used to help guide migrating smolts past adverse habitats in lowland streams.  相似文献

Because it can uniquely furnish insights into nonuse values for ecosystem services, survey‐based Stated Preference (SP) valuation is widely used to estimate the benefits of ecological restoration. SP surveys ask respondents to select among restoration options yielding different ecological outcomes. This review examines the representation of ecological outcomes in SP studies seeking to quantify values for restoration of aquatic ecosystems. To promote the validity of ecological indicators used in SP valuation, we identified four standards: indicators should be measurable, interpretable, applicable, and comprehensive. We reviewed recent SP studies estimating the value of aquatic ecosystem services to assess whether ecological indicators in current use had these desirable properties. More than half of the 54 indicators reviewed were measurable, meaning referable to potentially precise quantification. About one‐third were interpretable, that is, presented in a way that facilitates understanding the effects of restoration. About three quarters of the indicators were applicable; SP valuation practitioners typically consult with natural scientists to ensure that indicators represent the effect of stressors on ecological systems and with focus groups to ensure that indicators have a connection with ecosystem services that contribute to public well‐being. While most of the SP studies employed diverse and potentially comprehensive indicators that could capture direct and indirect effects of restoration, and 6 of 20 studies used indicators that met all standards, shortcomings in the indicators were common. These problems can be rectified with attention to how natural scientists measure change and to relationships between restoration outcomes and characteristics of fully restored reference ecosystems.  相似文献

A piecewise regression approach was used to objectively quantify barotrauma injury thresholds in two physoclistous species, Murray cod Maccullochella peelii and silver perch Bidyanus bidyanus, following simulated infrastructure passage in a barometric chamber. The probability of injuries such as swimbladder rupture, exophthalmia and haemorrhage, and emphysema in various organs increased as the ratio between the lowest exposure pressure and the acclimation pressure (ratio of pressure change, R(NE:A)) reduced. The relationship was typically non‐linear and piecewise regression was able to quantify thresholds in R(NE:A) that once exceeded resulted in a substantial increase in barotrauma injury. Thresholds differed among injury types and between species but by applying a multispecies precautionary principle, the maintenance of exposure pressures at river infrastructure above 70% of acclimation pressure (R(NE:A) of 0·7) should protect downstream migrating juveniles of these two physoclistous species sufficiently. These findings have important implications for determining the risk posed by current infrastructures and informing the design and operation of new ones.  相似文献

Using a large-scale open-channel flume, the swimming ability and behaviour of individual adult European eel Anguilla anguilla and river lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis, species that exhibit anguilliform locomotion, were quantified under complex hydraulic conditions created by a 0·2-0·3 m high under- or overshot weir during four discharge regimes. Fishes were allowed to approach the weirs from both up- and downstream. All fishes passed the undershot weir, independent of discharge and direction of movement, and under high flow (mean ±S.E. 194·63 ± 6·48 l s(-1)) moved upstream against velocities that ranged between 1·75 and 2·12 m s(-1), suggesting greater maximum swimming capability than previously reported. In comparison, passage efficiency during upstream movement was lower for the overshot weir for both L. fluviatilis and A. anguilla. Downstream moving A. anguilla took longer to pass the over- than undershot weir. This study describes a methodology to attain realistic measures of swimming ability and behavioural performance required to develop multispecies fish passage criteria.  相似文献

Variations in behavioral traits are widely recognized to drive animal behaviors exhibited within a population. However, information on how behavior traits influence behavior in anthropogenically modified habitats is lacking. Many habitats have become highly fragmented as a result of human processes. To mitigate this and improve habitat connectivity, wildlife passes are increasingly employed, with the aim of enabling animals to move freely between habitats. However, wildlife passes (e.g., fishways) are not always effective in achieving passage and it remains uncertain what factors play a role in an individual''s likelihood of passing successfully. This study measured three behavioral traits (boldness, exploration, and activity) in juvenile brown trout (Salmo trutta; n = 78) under field conditions within a river and tested whether these behavior traits influenced both the passage success and the behaviors exhibited during upstream fishway passage attempts. Although behavioral traits were found and collapsed into two behavioral trait dimensions, behavioral traits had low repeatability and so did not contribute to a personality spectrum. Boldness was found to negatively influence the number of passage attempts carried out by an individual and to positively influence passage success, with bolder individuals carrying out fewer attempts and having an increased probability of passage success. No behavioral traits were found to be related to other passage metrics (passage success, Time until First Attempt, and Passage Duration) during the first passage. But all three behavioral traits were significantly negatively related to the changes in passage behaviors at consecutive, successful passage attempts, with bolder, more exploratory and more active individuals passing through a fishway quicker on the second passage than on the first. This study suggests that bolder and more active individuals may perform better during fishway passage attempts, particularly within rivers where multiple barriers to movement exist.  相似文献

The fishes of the warm-temperate East Kleinemonde Estuary (South Africa) have been sampled bi-annually, in summer and winter, using seine and gillnets since December 1995 and a total of 19 families, represented by 38 species were recorded between December 1995 and July 2006. Indicative of a warming trend, six new species of tropical fishes ( Valamugil cunnesius, Valamugil robustus, Liza alata, Liza macrolepis, Glossogobius giuris and Terapon jarbua ) were recorded in the catches from 1999 onwards, with V. cunnesius and L. macrolepis recorded in catches almost every year after 2002. Mean annual sea-surface temperatures recorded along the adjacent coast have been increasing during the past decade and this may have facilitated the southward extension of tropical marine fishes into the warm-temperate biogeographic zone.  相似文献
