Seventy one fish species belonging to 27 families and 50 genera were collected from various sampling sites spread along the upstream and downstream parts of the Chalakudy river, in the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot in Kerala, South India. Cyprinids were the most dominant group represented by 24 species belonging to 13 genera, followed by the catfishes of the family Bagridae (7 species from 2 genera) and loaches belonging to the family Balitoridae (5 species from 5 genera). Of the 71 species, 4 belong to the ‘critically endangered’ (CR) and 16 to the ‘endangered’ (EN) category. 3 of the critically endangered species are strictly endemic to the Chalakudy river system. We also collected 5 exotic species several of them categorized as potential pest. Fish species richness (FSR) showed a direct relationship with increasing stream order with maximum values observed in the downstream/low elevation regions. Considerable differences were observed in the FSR between different microhabitats with maximum values observed in bed rock and pool riffle and the lowest in regimes followed by step pools. Diversity and species richness decreased with increasing altitude and higher diversity and species richness were observed in sampling sites located between 0–200 m above sea level. A definite temporal partitioning was also observed with regard to FSR with higher richness during the day time and the lowest observed at dawn. Indiscriminate collection of endemic and threatened ornamental fish species for export, exploitation of endangered food fishes by forest-dwelling communities and local fisher folk, pollution, loss of riparian cover, damming and exotic species threaten the rich ichthyofaunal diversity of Chalakudy River. An urgent need exists for studying the life history traits and demography of the most important endemic and threatened fishes, as lack of information on these aspects have significantly affected conservation efforts. The implementation of strong management strategies like fixing total allowable catch (TAC), and the use of quotas are needed to reduce the overall collection pressure with regard to the trade in native ornamental species from the river.  相似文献

The green swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii; Poeciliidae) is a popular ornamental freshwater fish species. Fourteen microsatellites were isolated from a green swordtail genomic library enriched for CA‐repeats. Thirteen microsatellites were polymorphic in green swordtail; interestingly four of them were tetranucleotide‐type. Cross‐species amplification showed that 10 of the 14 microsatellites were polymorphic in guppy (Poecilia reticulata; Poeciliidae) as well. No significant directional difference of allele length was seen between the two species at any of the loci tested.  相似文献

Population differences in the schooling behaviour of adult guppies (Poecilia reticulata) from Trinidad have previously been well documented. This paper demonstrates that variation in schooling behaviour is also present in newborn fish. Guppies from the Aripo River of Trinidad display well-developed schooling behaviour from birth. In addition to forming cohesive and polarized groups, these newborn fish also exhibit predator inspection behaviour. Newborn guppies from the Paria River perform inspections but, unlike the Aripo fish, are poor schoolers. Population variation in behaviour at birth does not necessarily reflect the pattern observed in the adult fish. As adults, guppies from the Upper section of the Aripo River have a much lower schooling tendency and are less wary during inspection than the downstream Lower Aripo guppies. At birth, however, the schooling behaviour and inspection behaviour in the two populations is identical. These results suggest that different selective pressures operate on adult and newborn guppies in Trinidad.  相似文献

Synopsis Modal action patterns used in maintenance behavior have often been included in animals' communication repertoires during evolution, yet for fish neither the occurrence nor subsequent ritualization of maintenance behavior has been demonstrated. We review the literature and show that one maintenance behavior, the chafe, occurs in at least 30 families of fish. The chafe thus appears to offer a fruitful tool for the phylogenetic analysis of behavior of fish. We show that chafing in Etroplus maculatus and Xiphophorus helleri functions to remove sources of irritation from their skin. We also show that during ontogeny and when in social groups the frequency of chafing does not change with age in E. maculatus and E. suratensis. Etroplus suratensis have about twice the body surface and chafe twice as often as E. maculatus. Chafe-like behavior in Etroplus is observed during ontogeny when young glance on their parents' body. Young E. maculatus without parents present chafe more frequently than young with parents present suggesting that chafing on the substrate may substitute for parent contacting. Chafing is also included in adult behavior where it occurs during pair-formation, nest relief behavior and as an interspecific signal performed by the cleaner E. maculatus upon the host E. suratensis. The maintenance chafe and glance upon the parent both occur rapidly while the chafe performed during pair-formation is slow suggesting a degree of ritualization.  相似文献

The morphometric relationships of three native and one exotic freshwater fish species from the Lower San Juan and Lower Pisco River basins, central Coast of Peru, are presented. Specimens were collected in May and November 2010 using seine nets and electrofishing. Length‐Weight (LWR) relationships for Andinoacara stalsbergi, Trichomycterus punctulatus, Basilichthys archaeus and Poecilia reticulata are provided for the first time, contributing information towards the effort to conserve freshwater fishes.  相似文献

The Yangtze River is the longest river in China and is divided into upstream and mid‐downstream regions by the Three Gorges (the natural barriers of the Yangtze River), resulting in a complex distribution of fish. Dramatic changes to habitat environments may ultimately threaten fish survival; thus, it is necessary to evaluate the genetic diversity and propose protective measures. Species identification is the most significant task in many fields of biological research and in conservation efforts. DNA barcoding, which constitutes the analysis of a short fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequence, has been widely used for species identification. In this study, we collected 561 COI barcode sequences from 35 fish from the midstream of the Yangtze River. The intraspecific distances of all species were below 2% (with the exception of Acheilognathus macropterus and Hemibarbus maculatus). Nevertheless, all species could be unambiguously identified from the trees, barcoding gaps and taxonomic resolution ratio values. Furthermore, the COI barcode diversity was found to be low (≤0.5%), with the exception of H. maculatus (0.87%), A. macropterus (2.02%) and Saurogobio dabryi (0.82%). No or few shared haplotypes were detected between the upstream and downstream populations for ten species with overall nucleotide diversities greater than 0.00%, which indicated the likelihood of significant population genetic structuring. Our analyses indicated that DNA barcoding is an effective tool for the identification of cyprinidae fish in the midstream of the Yangtze River. It is vital that some protective measures be taken immediately because of the low COI barcode diversity.  相似文献

Aim By dissolving natural physical barriers to movement, human‐mediated species introductions have dramatically reshuffled the present‐day biogeography of freshwater fishes. The present study investigates whether the antiquity of Australia's freshwater ichthyofauna has been altered by the widespread invasion of non‐indigenous fish species. Location Australia. Methods Using fish presence–absence data for historical and present‐day species pools, we quantified changes in faunal similarity among major Australian drainage divisions and among river basins of north‐eastern Australia according to the Sørensen index, and related these changes to major factors of catchment disturbance that significantly alter river processes. Results Human‐mediated fish introductions have increased faunal similarity among primary drainages by an average of 3.0% (from 17.1% to 20.1% similarity). Over three‐quarters of the pairwise changes in drainage similarity were positive, indicating a strong tendency for taxonomic homogenization caused primarily by the widespread introduction of Carassius auratus, Gambusia holbrooki, Oncorhynchus mykiss and Poecilia reticulata. Faunal homogenization was highest in drainages subjected to the greatest degree of disturbance associated with human settlement, infrastructure and change in land use. Scenarios of future species invasions and extinctions indicate the continued homogenization of Australian drainages. In contrast, highly idiosyncratic introductions of species in river basins of north‐eastern Australia have decreased fish faunal similarity by an average of 1.4%. Main conclusions We found that invasive species have significantly changed the present‐day biogeography of fish by homogenizing Australian drainages and differentiating north‐eastern river basins. Decreased faunal similarity at smaller spatial scales is a result of high historical similarity in this region and reflects the dynamic nature of the homogenization process whereby sporadic introductions of new species initially decrease faunal similarity across basins. Our study points to the importance of understanding the role of invasive species in defining patterns of present‐day biogeography and preserving the antiquity of Australia's freshwater biodiversity.  相似文献

The influence of water-borne iron (500 μg × 1-1 and 2 mg × 1-1) on the liver of Poecilia reticulata is studied by means of electron microscopy. The uptake and effect of iron is affected by a. the chemical speciation of the metal: Iron complexed with tri-polyphosphates is more deleterious than inorganic Fe3+; b. the nutritional status of the fish: In food-deprived Poecilia reticulata iron is absorbed and enhances starvation-induced liver damage. In fed animals, there is no uptake at all. Mild alterations of hepatocyte ultrastructure are attributed to an unspecific stress response.  相似文献

Sexual harassment by males has been reported from several live-bearingfishes (Poeciliidae) and has been shown to inflict costs onfemales. For example, poeciliid females have reduced feedingopportunities when accompanied by a male because females dedicateattention to avoiding male copulation attempts. Poeciliid speciesdiffer considerably in male mating behavior, such as the presenceor absence of courtship. Courting males display in front ofthe females, but males attempting to sneak-copulate approachfemales from behind, that is, in the blind portion of theirvisual field, and force copulations, which can be viewed asa male persistence trait. We predicted that poeciliid femalesneed to be more vigilant in the presence of noncourting males,and costs of harassment by noncourting males might be stronger.In a comparative approach we examined the costs of male sexualharassment for females as reduced feeding time in 9 speciesof live-bearing fishes, including courting (Poecilia latipinna,Poecilia reticulata, Xiphophorus cortezi, Xiphophorus variatus)and noncourting species (Poecilia mexicana [surface- and cave-dwellingform], Poecilia orri, Gambusia affinis, Gambusia geiseri, Heterandriaformosa). In all species examined except for the cave form ofP. mexicana, focal females spent significantly less time feedingin the presence of a male than when together with another female.The time females spent feeding was found to significantly declinewith increasing male mating activity (sum of all sexual behaviors),but there was no support for the idea that females would spendmore time feeding in the presence of courting males comparedwith noncourting ones.  相似文献

The Tampa Bay region of Florida exhibits the highest concentration of ornamental aquaculture facilities in the USA. Because of the diversity of aquaculture products (~800 species and varieties) and extensive production history (began in the 1930s and 1940s), this region could be a hotspot for escaped ornamental fish. We evaluated the scope of ornamental fish invasions in this region by examining (1) escape vectors and (2) the distribution of escaped fish. We investigated potential pathways of fish escape including theft/vandalism, fish transport, bird carry-off, and through effluent discharge. Fish were sampled at the effluent discharge and continued into the surrounding environment. The dominant escape vector was through farm effluents; there was no evidence that theft/vandalism, fish transport, or bird carry-off contributed to fish escape. Most captured fish were natives, especially the ubiquitous Eastern Mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki). Ornamental species and varieties were also captured, especially cichlids and poeciliids such as the Green Swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii) and Southern Platyfish (Xiphophorus maculatus). Ornamental fish were often found in the immediate vicinity of fish farms but were rarely captured in the surrounding environment. Catch per unit effort and ornamental fish diversity declined when moving away from the aquaculture facility effluent and was reduced at sites with a detention pond. The observed fish distribution might be due to relatively cold water in sub-tropical Florida, predatory fish in the environment, and additional factors related to the physical or biological habitat. Ultimately, few ornamental fishes have established in this region despite a long period of extensive culture.  相似文献

Globally, introductions of alien species are increasingly common, with invasive predators potentially having detrimental effects via predation on native species. However, native prey may avoid predation by adopting new behaviors. To determine whether invasive fish populations consume endemic shrimp in invaded Hawaiian anchialine habitats or if adopted patterns of diel migration prevents predation as previously hypothesized, a total of 183 invasive poeciliids (158 Gambusia affinis and 25 Poecilia reticulata) were collected for gut content analyses from four anchialine sites during wet and dry seasons on the islands of Hawai‘i and Maui. Predation on shrimp was not detected in habitats where they retreat exclusively into the underlying aquifer diurnally and only emerge nocturnally. However, low levels of predation were detected (7/65 fishes, only by Gambusia affinis) at Waianapanapa Cave, Maui, where shrimp retreat into both the aquifer and a cave during the day. Thus, adopted behavioral responses to invasive fishes generally, though not universally, prevent predation on endemic Hawaiian anchialine shrimps. However, non-consumptive effects resulting from behavioral modification of shrimps may have appreciable impacts on the Hawaiian anchialine ecosystem and warrant further study.  相似文献

Identifying the environmental factors responsible for the formation of a species' distribution limit is challenging because organisms interact in complex ways with their environments. However, the use of statistical niche models in combination with the analysis of phenotypic variation along environmental gradients can help to reduce such complexity and identify a subset of candidate factors. In the present study, we used such approaches to describe and identify factors responsible for the parapatric distribution of two closely‐related livebearer fish species along a salinity gradient in the lowlands of Trinidad, West Indies. The downstream distribution limits of Poecilia reticulata were strongly correlated with the brackish–freshwater interface. We did not observe significant phenotypic variation in life‐history traits for this species when comparing marginal with more central populations, suggesting that abrupt changes in conditions at the brackish–freshwater interface limit its distribution. By contrast, Poecilia picta was present across a wide range of salinities, although it gradually disappeared from upstream freshwater localities. In addition, P. picta populations exhibited an increase in offspring size in localities where they coexist with P. reticulata, suggesting a role for interspecific competition. The parapatric distribution of these two species, suggests that P. reticulata distributions are limited by an abiotic factor (salinity), whereas P. picta is limited by a biotic factor (interspecific competition). Similar parapatric patterns have been previously described in other systems, suggesting they might be a common pattern in nature. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Biological invasion is globally pervasive and an increasing threat to biodiversity. We need to be able to predict the ecological impacts of alien species, in order to prioritize management of those expected to be most damaging. Comparisons of functional response (FR) between invaders and trophically similar natives has been proposed as useful for predicting invader impacts, as interaction intensity tends to be reflected in higher FRs. We undertook feeding trials comparing FRs of four invasive poeciliids (mosquitofish [Gambusia affinis], guppy [Poecilia reticulata], liberty molly [P. salvatoris] and swordtail [Xiphophorus hellerii]) in Hong Kong with three similar-sized native fishes (ricefish [Oryzias curvinotus: Adrianichthyidae]; predaceous chub [Parazacco spilurus] and half-banded barb [Puntius semifasciolatus: Cyprinidae]). We tested whether FRs correctly reflected known impacts of the mosquitofish and guppy locally, and used FRs to forecast potential impacts of the molly and swordtail. Overall, the swordtail and molly consumed more prey and had higher FRs than the other five fishes, owing to their shorter prey handling time and/or higher attack rate. Mosquitofish and guppy had similar FRs to native fishes. All fishes showed type-II FRs, and had some potential to destabilize prey populations. Such results predict that the molly and swordtail could have strong ecological effects in Hong Kong freshwaters. However, FR alone was not highly predictive of known impacts of mosquitofish and guppy. It is suggested a more holistic approach incorporating estimates of field abundance and parameterization of other niche dimensions of the invader will be needed.

Environmental parameters and ichthyofauna were investigated over a 2 years period in three regions along the 200 km length of Cross River. The objective of the study was to quantify the relative importance of local environmental conditions prevailing within sampling sites and the composition and abundance of the principal fish species in the upper, middle and lower reaches of the river. Vegetation cover, size of river, flow velocity, water level, temperature, transparency, and food availability explained the observed seasonal and spatial changes in fish abundance. Forty-six species and 28 genera of fish belonging to 16 families were recorded among the 14,466 fish caught. Three fish families (Cichlidae, Bagridae, and Clariidae) yielded highest number (41.3%) of species while Denticeptidae, Protopteridae, and Osteoglossidae had the least. Oreochromis niloticus, Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, and Clarias anguillaris numerically dominated (46.4%) catch composition. Species richness was higher for the river stretch in forest area than in savanna, and it was correlated significantly with width of the reach, water transparency, depth, and flow velocity (P < 0.001) of the river. Wet season samples were more diverse (>0.6) and had higher richness (>9.7) than those for dry season. Wet season and forest regions were therefore critical in maintaining fish stock of Cross River.  相似文献

Biological features of chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha from the Apuka River, the largest river of the northeastern Kamchatka inflowing Olyutorskii Bay of the Bering Sea, are studied. Chinook salmon from the Apuka River spend mainly a year in the river before downstream migration to the sea. The fish live in the sea for 1–4 years. The spawning migration of chinook salmon into the Apuka River begins in late May just after ice melting, and it continues until early August. The main part of the spawners enters the river during June. A hypothesis on the occurrence of two seasonal races in the Apuka River is proposed.  相似文献

Competitive interactions between Galaxias maculatus, native to southeastern Australia, and Gambusia holbrooki, an exotic pest, were examined in relation to two types of artificial cover and a food source. Experiments were performed in an 800 l tank using photographic techniques. The relative distance of G. maculatus from cover or food source before and after the introduction of G. holbrooki were compared. Also, the proportions of the species were altered to examine the effects of unequal numbers on dominance behaviour. It was found that G. holbrooki was unable to out compete G. maculatus for either cover or food. The distance of G. maculatus from a food source was seen to increase following the introduction of G. holbrooki, when they outnumbered G. maculatus by 3 to 1. Although the distance from the food of␣G.␣maculatus increased following the introduction of G. holbrooki, in all cases the mean distance of G.␣maculatus from cover or food was less than that of G. holbrooki. Significant intra-species competition appeared to occur between G. maculatus and it may be that this competition had a greater effect than the competitive pressure G. holbrooki was able to place on the natives. This study revealed that the exotic pest species, G. holbrooki, could not out compete a small native Australian fish species.  相似文献

1. The Biobío River basin of south‐central Chile exhibits the greatest species richness of all rivers in Chile, where it is one of the most important rivers for human use. Use for provision of drinking water, irrigation, sewage effluents, hydropower generation and industry has increased dramatically during the last decade. To help understand the effects of human activities on the Biobío River, we document recent changes in the fish community. 2. In this study, current patterns of distribution and abundance of fishes were compared with the expected longitudinal pattern, and to historical data from studies conducted before the rapid development of the last decade. Fish distribution, biomass, abundance and diversity were studied at eight sampling stations in the middle and lower zones of the river in both high and low flow seasons. 3. Contrary to the pattern observed in less impacted river systems, species richness (S), diversity (H′) and abundance [calculated catch per unit effort (CPUE)] all tended to decrease downstream from the uppermost sampling locations. Mean S decreased from 7.9 to 5.4, mean H′ decreased from 0.7 to 0.4, and mean CPUE decreased from 111 to 43 from hyporithral to potamal locations. 4. Comparison with previous records indicates loss or reduction in distribution of native species, and a concurrent expansion in distribution and abundance of tolerant introduced species (e.g. Gambusia holbrooki, and Cyprinus carpio) over the last 10–15 years. These comparisons suggest a large‐scale and long‐term effect of recent human impacts on the river.  相似文献

Dissolved oxygen and fish distribution in a Florida spring   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
This study examined the distribution and relative abundance of fishes along a dissolved oxygen gradient in Singing Springs, Florida. Over the 1-year study, dissolved oxygen concentration in the spring exhibited a strong gradient ranging from an average of 0.20 mg l–2AM1 at the boil to 1.81 mg l–2AM1 110 meters downstream. Seasonal variation in dissolved oxygen was very low relative to the spatial variation along the spring gradient. Fish community composition was evaluated monthly at the boil of the spring, 45 m downstream just after the confluence of the spring and the main river, and 110 m downstream. The fish community in the spring was characterized by species generally considered to be tolerant of low oxygen. Gambusia holbrooki was the most abundant species at all sites comprising an average of 88.1% of the fish captured at the boil, 63.2% of the fish captured at 45 m, and 74.8% of the fish captured at 110 m downstream. The diversity of fishes (G. holbrooki, Heterandria formosa, Notropis harperi, Lucania goodei, and Poecilia latipinna) increased with distance from the boil. Although there were some seasonal differences in patterns of diversity and community structure, the inter-site differences were much more apparent throughout the study. It is likely that the pattern of variation in dissolved oxygen interacts with the respiratory abilities of the fishes to affect the distribution pattern and community composition along the gradient.  相似文献

目的 研究4种不同产地的家用洗涤剂对红剑鱼、孔雀鱼和食蚊鱼的急性毒性影响。方法 用水毒理学方法测定它们对3种鱼类的24hLC50,并将洗涤剂溶液存放15d和30d后测定其对鱼类的急性毒性。结果 在远低于日常使用量的浓度下,4种家用洗涤剂均对红剑鱼、孔雀鱼和食蚊鱼有急性毒性,24h LC50值在20mg/L~55mg/L;家用洗涤剂溶液存放一段时间后对鱼类的急性毒性作用无明显降低。结论 含有大量家用洗涤剂的生活污水排放到自然水体后将对鱼类产生持续的有害影响。  相似文献

赤水河是长江上游少有的仍保持自然流态的大型一级支流,是长江鱼类重要的繁衍场和珍稀物种的保护地,摸清其鱼类多样性现状及鱼类群落结构特征对赤水河水生态恢复评估极为重要。于2021年9月对赤水河流域开展了鱼类多样性、分布及其特征调查,全流域共设置52个采样点,采用环境DNA技术采集并研究了赤水河鱼类的组成及其分布。结果显示通过环境DNA方法共调查到鱼类6目18科62属77种,包含16种长江特有鱼类。以鲤形目为主,占总数的87.87%。赤水河鱼类食性以杂食性和肉食性鱼类为主,群落结构上,处于下层水环境鱼类较多;赤水河鱼类优势种为宽鳍鱲(Y=0.205)、西昌华吸鳅(Y=0.085)、麦穗鱼(Y=0.068)、乌苏拟鲿(Y=0.033)、云南光唇鱼(Y=0.027);赤水河上游和下游鱼类群落(P<0.01)和Shannon-Wiener指数差异均显著(P<0.05)。海拔、流速、pH、电导率和温度是影响赤水河鱼类多样性的主要环境因素。为环境DNA技术在赤水河鱼类多样性调查中的应用提供了探索性研究,将有助于赤水河生物多样性的保护。  相似文献
