Rhizocephalan parasites are dioecious organisms, in that one or several dwarf males are implanted into the external part of the female parasite soon after it emerges from the interior of the host animal. The structure of the female externa and its resident males is crucial for understanding both the reproductive biology and the taxonomy of these specialized parasites. We use scanning electron microscopy and histological methods to study the anatomy of juvenile and the mature externae of the rhizocephalan barnacle Loxothylacus texanus parasitizing the blue crab Callinectes rathbunae. We put emphasis on the implantation of males and the histology of the female reproductive organs. In the virgin externae, male cyprids attach around a cuticular hood covering the mantle aperture, which is partially blocked by a plug of cuticle so only trichogon larvae, not cyprids, can access the mantle cavity. This resembles the situation known from Sacculina carcini. The mature externa is characterized by a visceral mass that contains the ovary, paired colleteric glands, a single male receptacle, but paired receptacle ducts. The proximal attachment of the visceral mass is located at some distance from the basal stalk, as is characteristic for the genus Loxothylacus. The internal anatomy of the mature externa of L. texanus is in most features similar to that seen in other species of the Sacculinidae, which comprises the majority of rhizocephalan species. However, the single receptacle creates a situation where the two implanted males cannot be kept separate as in most other rhizocephalans, but pass through spermatogenesis in a common chamber. Interna development within the intertidal tropical crab, Leptodius exaratus, requires up to 4.5 months; the roots become distributed from the CNS along the major nerves and, when the crab moults, results in emergence of numerous externae located symmetrically on the abdomen and bases of the thoracic appendages. As many externae drop off, their number is continuously reduced; the survivors reach sexual maturity and ovulate after 2.5 months and complete embryonic development after 2 more months. At the next moult a new and more numerous generation of externae appears, and this is repeated until the crab dies. Presence of externae significantly prolongs the host's normal intermoult period and minimizes its growth. The parasite has little effect on the host's sexual characters although females are normally sterilized. The cuticle of the externa is moulted once, leaving a distinct annulus around the stalk. Spermatogonia are presumably injected by male cyprids into the female externa and develop into sperm within one or more vesicular spermatogenic bodies in its mantle. The eggs are laid through a single oviduct into the mantle cavity where they become fertilized and develop into cyprids that are liberated at the disintegration of the externa.  相似文献

Abstract A new rhizocephalan parasite which infests the barnacles Chthamalus challengeri and Balanus amphitrite amphitrite is described. It is known only from the type locality, Aburatsubo, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Its position in the family Chthamalophilidae is assured by the cyprids lacking a thorax, by the position of the mesenteric canal opposite to the stalk, and by its host being a balanomorph barnacle. Among the three previously described species of the Chthamalophilidae, the new species most closely resembles Boschmaella balani, but it differs in details of the internal root system and in the externa being found both on the host body and on the inner mantle. About two-thirds of the infested hosts carry more than one externa.  相似文献

We use sequences from the nuclear ribosomal genes, 18S and 28S to analyze the phylogeny of the Rhizocephala Akentrogonida including two species, Clistosaccus paguri and Chthamalophilus delagei, that are critical for understanding rhizocephalan evolution but have not previously been part of a molecularly based study. In addition we use light and scanning electron microscopy to compare the cypris larvae of C. paguri, Sylon hippolytes and two species of the family Thompsoniidae, since this larval stage offers a suite of characters for analyzing the evolution of these otherwise highly reduced parasites. The Rhizocephala Akentrogonida form a monophyletic group nested within a paraphyletic “Kentrogonida”. C. paguri and S. hippolytes are sistergroups confirming the monophyly of the Clistosaccidae that was originally based on similarities in the cypris larvae. We find numerous LM and SEM level similarities between the two species, many of which appear to be correlated with their specialized sexual system, where male cyprids use an antennule to implant cells into the virgin female parasite. Some of these traits are also found in cyprids of the thompsoniid species. We conclude that the special cypris morphology and the implantation of males by antennular penetration was present in the stem species to the Thompsoniidae and the Clistosaccidae and emphasize the power of larval characters in rhizocephalan systematics. C. delagei is a sister group to Boschmaella balani and the two are nested deep within the Akentrogonida. This confirms the monophyly of the Chthamalophilidae and falsifies the theory that C. delagei should represent the most primitive extant rhizocephalan. Instead, chthamalophilid rhizocephalans represent some of the most highly advanced members of the parasitic barnacles.  相似文献

A total of 72 prawns, mostly large females of Spirontocaris lilljeborgi (Danielssen), parasitized by the rhizocephalan Sylon hippolytes M. Sars, have been studied. The majority were collected in the Oslofjord, southern Norway (120–200 m). The formation of the root system and nucleus of the parasite have been examined by sectioning and dissection. The smallest internas found in the pereion of the host grow around the hepatopancreas and gonad and later penetrate into the pleon along the intestine and ventral nerve cord. The growth of the nucleus takes place in a tumour under the nerve cord, and when ≈ 3 mm in diameter, the externa breaks through the skin of the pleon at an ecdysis, at which the prawn changes to the breeding dress. It is postulated that male cyprids inject spermatogonia into non-ovigerous externas and that the male germ cells multiply and mature in the ovary at the expense of some of the ova. There is only one oviposition, at which ≈ 20000–200000 eggs are laid more or less simultaneously. Following the emission of the cyprid larvae, the externa degenerates and ultimately falls off, leaving a scar on the pleon. The remaining root system probably does not regenerate a new externa. The effects of parasitism on the host and the cause of frequently occurring multiple infections are discussed.  相似文献

Cypris morphology in the Rhizocephala differs both between the sexes of individual species and between the species. The large aesthetasc on the third antennular segment is unique to male cyprids of the Lernaeodiscidae, Peltogasteridae and Sacculinidae (suborder Kentrogonida) and Mycetomorpha vancouverensis (suborder Akentrogonida). A fourth segmental aesthetasc, common to both sexes, is much longer in males than in females. A spinous process on the attachment disc is another male-specific character, but is absent altogether in the Lernaeodiscidae. It is argued that these aesthetascs help locate the settlement targets. Except in Mycetomorpha vancourverensis, aesthetascs have been secondarily lost in cyprids of the suborder Akentrogonida, and there are no other morphological means for separating the male and female settling stage. In cyprids of Sylon hippolytes (Sylonidae) and of Mycetomorpha vancouverensis and Thompsonia sp. (Akentrogonidae) the long and slender antennules are probably used in penetration without formation of a kentrogon, as already reported for Clistosaccus paguri (Clistosaccidae). Cyprids of Sylon hippolytes and Clistosaccus paguri are almost morphologically identical.  相似文献

Twenty-one broods from different externae of Sacculina carcini Thompson were cultured to the cypris stage. The size of the cyprids was measured and the larvae subjected to settling upon unparasitized crabs (Garcinus maenas (L.)) and small juvenile externae. The cyprids occur in two sizes that may appear singly or together in the same brood. Small cyprids are of the female sex that settle upon crabs and are infective, while large cyprids are of the male sex and only settle upon juvenile externae. These results are in agreement with other well-studied rhizocephalans.  相似文献

The sex of encysted and excysted intestine-infecting T. spiralis larvae can be distinguished by the following morphological characteristics: the male larva has a long (approx 50 μm) rectum, and the anterior part of the testis is curved posteriorly. The female larva has a shorter rectum (approx 25 μm), a telogonic ovary, coiled uterine and seminal receptacle primordia, and a vaginal primordium. In paraffin sections males can be recognized by the spermatocytes which are of the same size. The oocytes vary in size: the smallest are located in the ventral portion, the largest on the dorsal portion of the ovary. Sex of the larvae can be differentiated by the length of the rectum as early as the tenth day, by the curvature of the anterior part of the testis and by the uterine primordium by the eleventh day, and by the presence of the vaginal primordium by the thirteenth day of intramuscular development. Farre's Organ is believed to be the primordium of the seminal receptacle.  相似文献

Heterosaccus lunatus parasitizes the portunid crab, Charybdis callianassa in Moreton Bay, Australia. With the host crabs maintained at 22.5 degrees C this sacculinid rhizocephalan released larval broods every 6-7 days. During July-August 1996 and particularly August 1999 such broods showed the change-over from male only larvae in the early broods to females only in the later broods. As the host crabs were maintained under similar aquarium conditions in both years it is concluded that the light/dark cycle is the principal cue triggering this larval sex reversal. Oogenesis in the parasite externa is somehow controlled to produce two different sized ova - male larvae develop from large ova and females from small ova. A working hypothesis outlining how sex is probably determined for the larvae of sacculinids is erected. H. lunatus is considered the ideal sacculinid for the further experimental work necessary to verify the proposed sex-determining mechanism and its control processes. Measurements of the maximum swimming speeds of H. lunatus male and female cyprids showed the larger males to be the faster in absolute terms (27.95 compared with 17.60 mm s(-1), respectively), however, the calculated relative speeds were almost identical at approximately 90 body lengths s(-1). Settlement experiments confirmed that female H. lunatus cyprids settle only on the gills of C. callianassa; these cyprids needed to be at least 2 days old before they were able to settle.  相似文献

We investigated the sexual system in two pedunculate barnacles of the family Scalpellidae. Both inhabit deep water and are attached to mobile arthropod hosts. Verum brachiumcancri was attached to the majid crab Rochinia hertwigi, and Weltnerium nymphocola to the pycnogonidan sea spider Boreonymphon rubrum. Both barnacles have separate sexes and females almost always carry two dwarf males that are almost fully embedded in a pair of symmetrically situated receptacles inside the rim of the mantle cavity. The dwarf males of V. brachiumcancri have a complex penile structure extending into the female mantle cavity. This is the first time a copulatory structure has been described in detail for a dwarf male of a scalpellid barnacle. Both species lack free nauplii and their larvae are released as cyprids; the brood size is small. This is probably an adaptation for settling close to the parent population. We compare reproductive strategies among scalpellids and suggest that the present males are highly specialized and that the females are allocating resources to few offspring.  相似文献

This study reconstructs early stages of Rozella allomycis endoparasitic infection of its host, Allomyces macrogynus. Young thalli of A. macrogynus were inoculated with suspensions of R. allomycis zoospores and allowed to develop for 120 h. Infected thalli at intervals were fixed for electron microscopy and observed. Zoospores were attracted to host thalli, encysted on their surfaces, and penetrated their walls with an infection tube. The parasite cyst discharged its protoplast through an infection tube, which invaginated the host plasma membrane. The host plasma membrane then surrounded the parasite protoplast and formed a compartment confining it inside host cytoplasm. The earliest host-parasite interface within host cytoplasm consisted of two membranes, the outer layer the host plasma membrane and the inner layer the parasite plasma membrane. At first a wide space separated the two membranes and no material was observed within this space. Later, as the endoparasite thallus expanded within the compartment, the two membranes became closely appressed. As the endoparasite thallus continued to enlarge, the interface developed into three membrane layers. Thus, host plasma membrane surrounded the parasite protoplast initially without the parasite having to pierce the host plasma membrane for entry. Significantly, host-derived membrane was at the interface throughout development.  相似文献

It is known that the rhizocephalan barnacle Loxothylacus texanus infects the greater blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, in the Gulf of Mexico and adjacent waters, however, factors that affect the prevalence and distribution of this parasite, particularly the dispersive larval stages of this organism, are not well understood. In the current study, the effects of salinity on larval survival and the metamorphosis of L. texanus in response to postmolt host exoskeleton were examined. Acute and acclimated responses were similar. Larval survival was highest in the 20-35‰ range, with 100% mortality of nauplii at all salinities <20‰ and >50‰. L. texanus cyprids were able to metamorphose over a broad range of salinities (15-60‰). In several cases, metamorphosis was actually greatest at high salinities (40-50‰). These data predict that L. texanus larvae would be concentrated in portions of Gulf of Mexico waters with salinities >20‰ such as the mouths of estuaries and bays. Conversely, upper regions of estuaries may be inhospitable to the dispersive (naupliar) stage of the parasite and may serve as a refuge from infection for host crabs.  相似文献

Parasitic castration, the specific blocking of host reproductive output by an individual parasite, is a host-parasite interaction common to many invertebrates, particularly crustaceans, echinoderms and molluscs. It can reduce host density, alter host population dynamics and the evolution of host life history traits. Here we show that parasitisation by a single female cymothoid isopod, Anilocra apogonae, castrates its vertebrate host, the five-lined cardinalfish, Cheilodipterus quinquelineatus. Parasitised male fish fail to mouthbrood their young. The gonads of parasitised fish are smaller and parasitised female fish have substantially fewer and smaller ova than do the gonads of unparasitised fish. As for parasitic castrators of invertebrate hosts, A. apogonae on C. quinquelineatus are uniformly dispersed amongst infested hosts (one adult female isopod per host), are site specific, and their body size is highly correlated with that of their host. These isopods are large relative to the body size of their hosts, averaging 3.8% of the weight of the host. Parasitised fish also weigh less and are shorter than unparasitised fish of the same age. Despite the presence of other potential hosts, A. apogonae only infests C. quinquelineatus. The consistency of the ecological correlates amongst known parasitic castrators suggests that the parasitic castrator host-parasite relationship will be recognised for other parasites of vertebrates.  相似文献

Clinocardium nuttallii from Yaquina Bay, Oregon, were found to harbor an endosymbiotic alga. Some aspects of this relationship are presented. The areas of infection include the siphon, mantle, and occasionally the foot. C. nuttallii under 2 years old are not infected; the incidence and intensity of the infection increases in the older age groups. For all ages the incidence averages 35%. Pigment composition, morphology, and growth characteristics of the alga are similar to those found in the genus Chlorella. In situ, the algae form dense, sometimes massive colonies but do not appear to cause any host reaction or enfeeblement. The thick layers surrounding the algal cells in situ, the dense colonies, and the in vitro reaction to host extract suggest the alga is parasitic. However, the presence of chloroplasts, the location of the algal cells only in illuminated tissue, the seemingly unhampered reproduction in situ, and the eventual adaptation to mineral medium suggest the alga is a facultative parasite. Experimental infection was achieved by feeding mature uninfected cockles a diet of only symbiont cells. In vitro observations found the symbiont cells readily engulfed by host blood amoebocytes. It is believed that the animal acquires the infection through phagocytosis of the symbiont cells and subsequent diapedesis across epithelial barriers by host amoebocytic cells.  相似文献

Adult sockeye salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka (Walbaum), treated with salmon pituitary extract in July survived for up to 47 days and developed nuptial colours in both male and female fish during this period, whereas no such characteristics appeared in untreated control fish. Furthermore, results showed that 20 of 50 adult female Philomena oncorhynchi recovered from the 15 treated fish contained fully developed tailed larvae in the uterus as compared with only one of 44 female P. oncorhynchi from 31 untreated control fish. None of 51 worms from 13 stilboestrol treated adult sockeye showed development in utero beyond an elongated embryo, nor did the host fish develop nuptial colours. P. oncorhynchi and its immature sockeye host (approx. 1 year prior to spawning) remained unaffected by any of three separate hormone treatment experiments using injection of salmon pituitary extract, injection of 17-β-estradiol, and stilboestrol mixed in the food.  相似文献

The intraerythrocytic malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, derives amino acids from the digestion of host cell haemoglobin. However, it also takes up amino acids from the extracellular medium. Isoleucine is absent from adult human haemoglobin and an exogenous source of isoleucine is essential for parasite growth. An extracellular source of methionine is also important for the normal growth of at least some parasite strains. In this study we have characterised the uptake of methionine by P. falciparum-infected human erythrocytes, and by parasites functionally isolated from their host cells by saponin-permeabilization of the erythrocyte membrane. Infected erythrocytes take up methionine much faster than uninfected erythrocytes, with the increase attributable to the flux of this amino acid via the New Permeability Pathways induced by the parasite in the erythrocyte membrane. Having entered the infected cell, methionine is taken up by the intracellular parasite via a saturable, temperature-dependent process that is independent of ATP, Na+ and H+. Substrate competition studies, and comparison of the transport of methionine with that of isoleucine and leucine, yielded results consistent with the hypothesis that the parasite has at its surface one or more transporters which mediate the flux into and out of the parasite of a broad range of neutral amino acids. These transporters function most efficiently when exchanging one neutral amino acid for another, thus providing a mechanism whereby the parasite is able to import important exogenous amino acids in exchange for surplus neutral amino acids liberated from the digestion of host cell haemoglobin.  相似文献

Summary To elucidate current controversies on sex in rhizocephalan barnacles, broods of Sacculina carcini, infesting the shore crab Carcinus maenas, were raised to cyprids in the laboratory and followed through settlement and metamorphosis. Free-swimming cyprids were studied by transmission electron microscopy and occur in male and female morphological types, which differ in the structure of carapace cuticle, antennular cuticle, antennular glands, and the cells suspected of being the stem cells during metamorphosis. These dissimilarities are in addition to the already known differences in cypris size, in number of antennular sense organs, and in substrata settled on by morphological males and females. Metamorphosing males (trichogons) and females (kentrogons) are illustrated in interference phase-contrast micrographs. The morphological differences between male and female cyprids are directly related to their dissimilar metamorphosis. Hence, cyprids of male morphology are anatomically incapable of metamorphosing into kentrogons, while cyprids of female morphology cannot metamorphose into trichogons. The determination of sex in rhizocephalan barnacles is discussed.The results refute the hypothesis that sex in Sacculina carcini is determined environmentally, e.g., by the substratum encountered by the cyprids at settlement. It is concluded that sex is determined already in the free-swimming larvae and, most probably, already in the ovary. This agrees with the mode of sex determination in other species of the Rhizocephala Kentrogonida.  相似文献

We performed histological studies on trophic and reproductive systems of colonial interna in Sacculina polygenea, a parasite of the coastal crab Hemigrapsus sanguineus. The trophic system that performs functions of absorption, accumulation, and transportation of nutrients from the hemolymph of the host comprises the trophic epithelium of distal canals and transporting trunks. The reproductive system of interna consist of nuclei (early stages of development of the primordia of externae) and the primordia of externae in later stages of development. It has been shown that during morphogenesis of the nucleus two primordia arise, a primordium of the externa itself and a primordium of its trophic system. In the primordium of the ovary, we found oogonia; early oocytes and vitellogenic oocytes were found in the ovaries of the late primordia of the externae. The damaging effects of the interna on the ovaries and testes of the crab host are discussed. Thus, we have found numerous elements of reproductive and trophic systems in the colonial interna of S. polygenea. The term individual is proposed to be used for the externa in rhizocephalan barnacles with its trophic system.  相似文献

Field studies have identified that male-biased infection can lead to increased rates of transmission, so we examined the relative importance of host sex on the transmission of a trophically transmitted parasite (Pterygodermatites peromysci) where there is no sex-biased infection. We experimentally reduced infection levels in either male or female white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) on independent trapping grids with an anthelmintic and recorded subsequent infection levels in the intermediate host, the camel cricket (Ceuthophilus pallidipes). We found that anthelmintic treatment significantly reduced the prevalence of infection among crickets in both treatment groups compared with the control, and at a rate proportional to the number of mice de-wormed, indicating prevalence was not affected by the sex of the shedding definitive host. In contrast, parasite abundance in crickets was higher on the grids where females were treated compared with the grids where males were treated. These findings indicate that male hosts contribute disproportionately more infective stages to the environment and may therefore be responsible for the majority of parasite transmission even when there is no discernable sex-biased infection. We also investigated whether variation in nematode length between male and female hosts could account for this male-biased infectivity, but found no evidence to support that hypothesis.  相似文献
