Abstract This paper describes the first results for an alternative approach to the development of sediment quality criteria in the nearshore areas of the Laurentian Great Lakes. The approach is derived from methods developed in the United Kingdom for establishing predictive relationships between macroinvertebrate fauna and the physico-chemistry of riverine environments. The technique involves a multivariate statistical approach using (i) data on the structure of benthic invertebrate communities, (ii) functional responses (survival, growth and reproduction) in four sediment toxicity tests (bioassays) with benthic invertebrates; and (iii) selected environmental variables at 96 reference (‘clean’) sites in the nearshore areas of all five Great Lakes (Lakes Superior, Huron, Erie, Ontario and Michigan). Two pattern recognition techniques (using the computer software package PATN) are employed in the analysis: cluster analysis and ordination. The ordination vector scores from the original axes of the pattern analysis are correlated (using CORR in SAS) with environmental variables which are anticipated to be least affected by anthropogenic activities (e. g. alkalinity, depth, silt, sodium etc.). Multiple discriminant analysis (MDA) is used to relate the site groupings from the pattern analysis to the environmental variables and to generate a model that can be used to predict community assemblages and functional responses at new sites with unknown but potential contamination. The predicted community assemblages and functional responses are then compared with the actual benthic communities and responses at a site, and the need for remedial action is determined. The predictive capability of the discriminant model was confirmed by performing several validation runs on subsets of the data. An example of the use of the model for sediment in Collingwood Bay (an area of concern designated by the IJC in Georgian Bay, Lake Huron) is presented and the technique is shown to be more precise in determining the need for remediation than the currently used provincial sediment quality criteria based on Screening Level Concentration (SLC) and laboratory toxicity tests. The ultimate goal of the study is the development of a method to determine the need for, and the success of, remedial action and to predict what benthic communities should look like at a site if it were clean and what responses of organisms in sediment toxicity tests constitute an acceptable end-point.  相似文献

Aim To identify the most important environmental drivers of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages in boreal springs at different spatial scales, and to assess how well benthic assemblages correspond to terrestrially derived ecoregions. Location Finland. Methods Benthic invertebrates were sampled from 153 springs across four boreal ecoregions of Finland, and these data were used to analyse patterns in assemblage variation in relation to environmental factors. Species data were classified using hierarchical divisive clustering (twinspan ) and ordinated using non‐metric multidimensional scaling. The prediction success of the species and environmental data into a priori (ecoregions) and a posteriori (twinspan ) groups was compared using discriminant function analysis. Indicator species analysis was used to identify indicator taxa for both a priori and a posteriori assemblage types. Results The main patterns in assemblage clusters were related to large‐scale geographical variation in temperature. A secondary gradient in species data reflected variation in local habitat structure, particularly abundance of minerogenic spring brooks. Water chemistry variables were only weakly related to assemblage variation. Several indicator species representing southern faunistic elements in boreal springs were identified. Discriminant function analysis showed poorer success in classifying sites into ecoregions based on environmental than on species data. Similarly, when classifying springs into the twinspan groups, classification based on species data vastly outperformed that based on environmental data. Main conclusions A latitudinal zonation pattern of spring assemblages driven by regional thermal conditions is documented, closely paralleling corresponding latitudinal patterns in both terrestrial and freshwater assemblages in Fennoscandia. The importance of local‐scale environmental variables increased with decreasing spatial extent. Ecoregions provide an initial stratification scheme for the bioassessment of benthic macroinvertebrates of North European springs. Our results imply that climate warming, landscape disturbance and degradation of spring habitat pose serious threats to spring biodiversity in northern Europe, especially to its already threatened southern faunistic elements.  相似文献

Ecotones are key areas for the detection of global change because many are predicted to move with shifts in climate. Prince of Wales Island, in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, spans the transition between mid‐ to high‐Arctic ecoregions. We analyzed limnological variables and recent diatom assemblages from its lakes and ponds to determine if assemblages reflected this ecotone. Limnological gradients were short, and water chemistry explained 20.0% of diatom variance in a redundancy analysis (RDA), driven primarily by dissolved organic carbon, Ca and SO4. Most taxa were small, benthic forms; key taxa such as planktonic Cyclotella species were restricted to the warmer, southern portion of the study area, while benthic Staurosirella were associated with larger, ice‐dominated lakes. Nonetheless, there were no significant changes in diatom assemblages across the mid‐ to high‐Arctic ecoregion boundary. We combined our data set with one from nearby Cornwallis Island to expand the study area and lengthen its environmental gradients. Within this expanded data set, 40.6% of the diatom variance was explained by a combination of water chemistry and geographic variables, and significant relationships were revealed between diatom distributions and key limnological variables, including pH, specific conductivity, and chl‐a. Using principal coordinates analysis, we estimated community turnover with latitude and applied piecewise linear regression to determine diatom ecotone positions. A pronounced transition was present between Prince of Wales Island and the colder, more northerly Cornwallis Island. These data will be important in detecting any future northward ecotone movement in response to predicted Arctic climate warming in this highly sensitive region.  相似文献

We compared the responsiveness of macroinvertebrate assemblages to variation in water quality (ions, nutrients, dissolved metals, and suspended sediment) in two mesohabitats within the main channel of three North American great rivers, the Upper Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio. Based on about 400 paired samples, we examined the responsiveness of benthic assemblages sampled in the littoral zone and assemblages sampled from the surface of woody snags in the main channel. The assemblages in the two mesohabitats were different in all rivers. Taxa richness was much higher in the benthos than on snags. Macroinvertebrate assemblage response to water quality variation was weak on the Mississippi River, but the reasons for this are unknown. Based on analysis of the similarity between the composition of assemblages from groups of sites with high and low concentrations of water quality variables, benthic assemblages were only slightly more sensitive to water chemistry variation than were snag assemblages. Results of two-sample comparisons between groups of sites with high and low concentrations of water quality variables were consistent with rank correlations of assemblage metrics with water quality. In general, there was little difference between habitats in response to variation in water quality on any river. Our simple method of snag sampling in great rivers is usually much easier than littoral benthic sampling because it does not require wading. Snag sampling in large rivers has some limitations (e.g., natural snags are sometimes absent, samples are semi-quantitative), but lack of sensitivity to water quality gradients compared to the benthos is not among them.  相似文献

 The objective of this work is to identify which substrata characteristics (such as coral morphology, coral diversity, coral species richness, percentage coverage by live coral or by algae) influence the structure and abundance of fish communities. The study was carried out at Reunion Island, Indian Ocean, where six sites were sampled in two zones (reef flat and outer reef slope). Quantitative data were collected by visual census techniques, along a linear transect of 50 m for the substratum, and a belt of 50×2 m for the fish communities. Correspondence analysis (CA) and an optimising cluster analysis, called dynamic clustering method (DCM) were used to describe and compare fish assemblages with the benthic composition. The relationships between benthic and fish communities were examined using the classes revealed by the partitioning of the substratum with DCM. This partitioning allowed us to derive four classes of substratum: the non-disturbed reef flat, the non-disturbed outer reef slope, the perturbed reef habitat and the reef pass. The analysis of the partitioning based on the coral variables suggests that there are significant relationships between benthic and fish assemblages. Accepted: 26 July 1996  相似文献

Surface sediment samples taken by box corer from 32 stations on the Iceland-Scotland Ridge have been investigated for their benthic foraminiferal content. The live (Rose Bengal stained) benthic foraminiferal fauna was differentiated from empty tests comprising the foraminiferal death assemblage. Principal component analysis of both the live and dead faunal data from the Iceland-Scotland Ridge reveals eight live species assemblages and six corresponding dead assemblages. Bottom water current conditions, surface sediment characteristics, particulate organic matter supply, and to some extent also the bottom water temperatures are the main factors limiting and governing the composition and distribution of live benthic foraminiferal species assemblages on the Iceland-Scotland Ridge. On the Atlantic slope of the Iceland-Scotland Ridge the dead species assemblages differ greatly from the foraminiferal fauna living there today due to winnowing processes and redeposition of Pleistocene sediments. In this area an investigation of distribution patterns of the empty tests only would lead to wrong results concerning ecologic interrelations between benthic foraminiferal species assemblages and their environment.  相似文献

We attempted to identify spatial patterns and determinants for benthic algal assemblages in Mid-Atlantic streams. Periphyton, water chemistry, stream physical habitat, riparian conditions, and land cover/use in watersheds were characterized at 89 randomly selected stream sites in the Mid-Atlantic region. Cluster analysis (TWINSPAN) partitioned all sites into six groups on the basis of diatom species composition. Stepwise discriminant function analysis indicated that these diatom groups can be best separated by watershed land cover/use (percentage forest cover), water temperature, and riparian conditions (riparian agricultural activities). However, the diatom-based stream classification did not correspond to Omernik's ecoregional classification. Algal biomass measured as chl a can be related to nutrients in habitats where other factors do not constrain accumulation. A regression tree model indicated that chl a concentrations in the Mid-Atlantic streams can be best predicted by conductivity, stream slope, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and riparian canopy coverage. Our data suggest that broad spatial patterns of benthic diatom assemblages can be predicted both by coarse-scale factors, such as land cover/use in watersheds, and by site-specific factors, such as riparian conditions. However, algal biomass measured as chl a was less predictable using a simple regression approach. The regression tree model was effective for showing that ecological determinants of chl a were hierarchical in the Mid-Atlantic streams.  相似文献

Scuba diving is now one of the major form of commercial use of marine protected areas (MPAs) around the world and the control of its potential impacts on the marine environment represents a fundamental key to manage this recreational activity in highly dived areas. A potential tool to tackle such issues has been thought to be the definition of a value of recreational carrying capacity of an area, but this approach has been rarely considered management-effective. Therefore, the first step for effectively managing scuba-diving should be ‘bottom-up’: characterizing the benthic communities potentially affected by diving and evaluating their vulnerability. Aim of this paper is to propose a tool to define an index of vulnerability for dive trails (STVI: scuba trail vulnerability index). This has taken into consideration both physical and biological features of each trail. All the considered features are represented by non-quantitative variables, because either they are purely qualitative or their quantitative measurement is impractical. The management of such qualitative information and its translation into a formal methodology was performed by means of fuzzy logic, which has been repeatedly proposed as a powerful technique to develop indices of environmental quality. The approach adopted in this study provided a useful tool for the preliminary assessment of the potential vulnerability of benthic assemblages to scuba-diving and may represent an alternative method to the assessment of carrying capacity. The application of this index will enable management strategies for potentially reducing the degradation of benthic organisms/assemblages, and allowing a sustainable use of MPAs.  相似文献

Relationships between environmental variables and benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages were investigated among several sites that varied in disturbance history in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, an Afromontane site in East Africa. Environmental variables were correlated with the level of past catchment disturbance – logging, agricultural encroachment, and present tourism activity. For example, sites in medium and high disturbance categories had higher values of specific conductance and lower water transparency than low disturbance category sites, these environmental variables may therefore act indicators of ecological quality of rivers. Environmental variables such as conductivity and water transparency were found to be good predictors of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages, with anthropogenically stressed sites having lower diversity than the reference sites. Impacted sites were dominated by tolerant taxa such as chironomid and leeches, while ‘clean water’ taxa such as Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera dominated at minimally impacted sites. Comparison of sites with different disturbance histories provided evidence for differences in benthic macroinvertebrate communities that reflect the state of forest restoration and recovery. We recommend quarterly monitoring of water quality to act as an early warning system of deterioration and tracking ecological recovery of previously impacted sites.  相似文献

Accurate mapping of marine species and habitats is an important yet challenging component of establishing networks of representative marine protected areas. Due to limited biological data, marine classifications based on abiotic data are often used as surrogates to represent biological patterns. We tested the surrogacy of an existing physiographic marine classification using non-metric multidimensional scaling and permutational analysis of variance to determine whether species composition was significantly different among physiographic units. We also present an alternative ecological classification that incorporates biological and environmental data in a community modeling approach. We use data on 174 species of demersal fish and benthic invertebrates to identify mesoscale biological assemblages in a 100,000 km2 study area in the northeast Pacific Ocean. We identified assemblages using cluster analysis then used a random forest model with 12 environmental variables to delineate mesoscale ecological units. Our community modelling approach resulted in five geographically coherent ecological units that were best explained by changes in depth, temperature and salinity. Our model showed high predictive performance (AUC = 0.93) and the resulting ecological units represent more distinct species assemblages than those delineated by physiographic variables alone. A strength of our analysis is the ability to map model uncertainty to identify transition zones at unit boundaries. The output of this study provides a biotic driven classification that can be used to better achieve representativity in the MPA planning process.  相似文献

Benthic maps are broad-scale characterizations that lack the detailed environmental attributes which have been the focus of most prior empirical studies linking reef fish and habitat. We used multivariate analyses to quantify correlations among fish assemblages, local habitat variables, and reef types depicted in benthic maps. Benthic maps of a study system in the U.S. Virgin Islands with high (100 m2 minimum mapping unit) and low (4,048 m2 minimum mapping unit) spatial resolution, respectively, were evaluated. Benthic maps depicted six reef types and two shelf positions (lagoon vs. shelf). Fish assemblages and local environmental variables were quantified at random sites throughout the landscape by diver surveys. Multivariate ordination based on either fish assemblages or environmental data did not result in well-separated groups of sites. Mapped reef types were not associated with distinct values of either local environmental variables or fish assemblages. Reef types exhibited substantial overlap in ordination plots based on benthic characteristics with groupings based on fish assemblages showing even greater overlap. Ordination patterns involving reef type were largely the same for both low- and high-resolution maps. In contrast, sites showed clear groups for lagoon and shelf in ordinations based on both environmental variables and fish assemblage composition, respectively. These results suggest that knowledge of the overall fish assemblage or fine-scale environmental characteristics could not be used to predict reef type depicted in benthic maps or vice versa. In contrast, reef zone could be used to predict fish assemblage or fine-scale environmental variables and vice versa.  相似文献

Chironomid assemblages in thirty-three mountain lakes situated above tree line in the Slovakian part of the Tatra Mountains were studied during 2000–2002. Chironomid species/taxa, collected as pupal exuviae, were correlated with physical, chemical, and lake morphometry variables of 22 lakes. Two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) was used to classify the lakes into four distinct groups: higher situated alpine lakes, lower situated alpine lakes, subalpine lakes and acidified lakes. Presence/absence of eight taxa was identified as indicative for this classification. In discriminant function analysis, pH, dissolved organic carbon, altitude and lake area were the most significant variables reflecting differences among groups of lakes. This model of four variables allowed 77% success in the prediction of group membership. A multiple regression model with lake area, concentration of magnesium and total phosphorus accounted for 37% of the variance in taxa richness. Lakes with greater area contained more chironomid taxa than smaller ones. Lakes with higher alkalinity and higher trophic status tend to support more taxa. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicated that most variation in the composition of chironomid assemblages was related to pH and to altitude. The results can be used as reference data for long-term monitoring of the Tatra lakes, especially in connection with a recovery from acidification and global climatic change.  相似文献

The larvae of freshwater mussels are obligate ectoparasites on fishes while adults are sedentary and benthic. Dispersal of mussels is dependent on the movement of fish hosts, a regional process, but growth and reproduction should be governed by local processes. Thus, mussel assemblage attributes should be predictable from the regional distribution and abundance of fishes. At a broad spatial scale in the Red River drainage, USA, mussel species richness and fish species richness were positively associated; maximum mussel richness was limited by fish richness, but was variable beneath that constraint. Measured environmental variables and the associated local fish assemblages each significantly accounted for the regional variation in mussel assemblages. Furthermore, mussel assemblages showed strong spatial autocorrelation. Variation partitioning revealed that pure fish effects accounted for 15.4% of the variation in mussel assemblages; pure spatial and environmental effects accounted for 16.1% and 7.8%, respectively. Shared variation among fish, space and environmental variables totaled 40%. Of this shared variation, 36.8% was associated with the fish matrix. Thus, the variation in mussel assemblages that was associated with the distribution and abundance of fishes was substantial (> 50%), indicating that fish community structure is an important determinant of mussel community structure. Although animals commonly disperse plants and, thus, influence the structure of plant communities, our results show a strong macroecological association between two disparate animal groups with one strongly affecting the assemblage structure of the other.  相似文献

Free-living nematodes are sensitive to most of the disturbances and therefore have ability to reflect direct structural and functional changes in an ecosystem. We studied nematode assemblages of Chilika Lagoon, the largest lagoon of Asia, across spatio-temporal scales in link with environmental variables and evaluated nematode assemblages as a proxy to characterize lagoonal benthic habitat settings. Our results revealed that nematode communities showed significant variation spatially and temporally in terms of mean density (16–854/10 cm2) and mean number of species (7–74). Salinity is the key factor that controls nematode community structure across this lagoon and was strongly supported by statistical analyses. The observed nematode assemblages were further used as a proxy to assign benthic habitats of Chilika into distinct biological, topographical and hydrological settings. This study showed that nematode assemblages could be effectively used for long term ecological monitoring of dynamic sedimentary environment of lagoons globally.  相似文献

The high degree of physical factors in intertidal estuarine ecosystem increases material processing between benthic and pelagic compartments. In these ecosystems, microphytobenthos resuspension is a major phenomenon since its contribution to higher trophic levels can be highly significant. Understanding the sediment and associated microphytobenthos resuspension and its fate in the water column is indispensable for measuring the food available to benthic and pelagic food webs. To identify and hierarchize the physical/biological factors potentially involved in MPB resuspension, the entire intertidal area and surrounding water column of an estuarine ecosystem, the Bay des Veys, was sampled during ebb tide. A wide range of physical parameters (hydrodynamic regime, grain size of the sediment, and suspended matter) and biological parameters (flora and fauna assemblages, chlorophyll) were analyzed to characterize benthic-pelagic coupling at the bay scale. Samples were collected in two contrasted periods, spring and late summer, to assess the impact of forcing variables on benthic-pelagic coupling. A mapping approach using kriging interpolation enabled us to overlay benthic and pelagic maps of physical and biological variables, for both hydrological conditions and trophic indicators. Pelagic Chl a concentration was the best predictor explaining the suspension-feeders spatial distribution. Our results also suggest a perennial spatio-temporal structure of both benthic and pelagic compartments in the ecosystem, at least when the system is not imposed to intense wind, with MPB distribution controlled by both grain size and bathymetry. The benthic component appeared to control the pelagic one via resuspension phenomena at the scale of the bay. Co-inertia analysis showed closer benthic-pelagic coupling between the variables in spring. The higher MPB biomass observed in summer suggests a higher contribution to filter-feeders diets, indicating a higher resuspension effect in summer than in spring, in turn suggesting an important role of macrofauna bioturbation and filter feeding (Cerastoderma edule).  相似文献

对香溪河流域3座梯级水库(古洞口一级水库、古洞口二级水库和三峡水库香溪河库湾)的底栖动物进行了比较生态学研究。运用主成分分析(PCA)对梯级水库的水质进行研究,表明沿着水库的梯度水质逐渐恶化。运用非度量多维标度法(NMS)对梯级水库的底栖动物群落结构进行相似性比较,表明选择水库湖泊区的样点进行梯级水库底栖动物生态学研究具有典型代表性。在物种组成和密度方面,古洞口一级水库和香溪河库湾都是寡毛类占优势,古洞口二级水库是摇蚊幼虫占优势。但3个水库都是耐污种占优势。采用典型对应分析(CCA)解析底栖动物群落结构与环境因子的关系,显示3个水库群落结构的差异主要由浊度造成。用TOC/Turb来表征有机物对浊度的贡献,结果显示古洞口二级水库有机物对浊度的贡献相对较小,因而表明泥沙等无机物对浊度的贡献相对较大。  相似文献

Synopsis Principal components analysis was performed on fish presence/absence data for 39 common fish species from 410 stream sites in Kansas. The analysis confirmed ten ecologically meaningful fish assemblages, based on species associations. Factor scores based on these assemblages were then clustered into six geographic areas or fish ecoregions. Canonical discriminant analysis identified environmental variables that distinguished the derived fish ecoregions. Mean annual runoff, mean annual growing season, and discharge appear most important. Mean width, mean depth, chloride concentration, water temperature, substrate type, gradient, and percent of pool habitat were less important. Correspondence exists between these fish ecoregions and the patterns of physiographic regions, river basins, geology, soil, and potential natural vegetation in Kansas. The multivariate statistical approach used to classify fish ecoregions should have considerable potential value for fish assessment and management purposes in areas other than the state of Kansas.  相似文献

Conservation planning and biodiversity monitoring rely exclusively on the use of surrogate groups. However, the effectiveness of these groups in representing unknown biodiversity is rarely tested. These tests can be based on cross-taxon concordance (or congruence) analysis. In a second step, the main mechanisms underlying concordance can be investigated. Here, we evaluated the relative influence of local environmental factors and spatial processes on the patterns of beta-diversity exhibited by phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthic invertebrates and the strength of assemblage concordance among these assemblages in 38 upland Amazonian lakes (northern Brazil) over four years. Zooplankton and benthic invertebrates responded exclusively to environmental variables. These results are in accordance with the expected under the species sorting model, where local factors are the main mechanisms shaping assemblage structure. In general, patterns of concordance between the assemblages were weak and varied through time, indicating that the use of surrogates in freshwater ecosystems may be a flawed approach.  相似文献

1. Macroinvertebrate assemblages were studied in the glacial river West-Jökulsá, originating from the Hofsjökull Ice Cap in central Iceland at an altitude of 860 m. Sampling sites were distributed from the source to 45 km downstream at 160 m a.s.l. Comparative studies were carried out on non-glacial rivers and tributaries in the area, at similar altitudes and distances from the glacial source.
2. Detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) demonstrated that species composition of benthic macroinvertebrates was related to the distance from the glacier. Assemblages at sampling sites furthest from the glacier were similar in species composition to sites in non-glacial rivers. Temporal variation was small compared with longitudinal zonation.
3. Based on canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) of data from the main glacial river, distance from the glacier, altitude, bryophyte biomass and the Pfankuch Index of channel stability were the measured explanatory variables having a significant effect on the structure of macroinvertebrate assemblages, accounting for 31% of the total variation in the data set. When data from all the rivers were analysed, altitude, bryophyte biomass, channel slope, suspended sediment concentration and maximum water temperature explained 21% of the variance.
4. Macroinvertebrate communities were in general agreement with the predictions of the conceptual model of Milner & Petts (1994) for the upstream reaches. The assemblages consisted mainly of Orthocladiinae and Diamesinae (Chironomidae), although other taxa such as Simuliidae, Plecoptera and Trichoptera were also found in low numbers. Shredders were lacking from the benthic communities, apparently because of continued glacial influence in the river even 45 km downstream from the glacier and lack of allochthononus inputs from riparian vegetation.  相似文献

Benthic assemblages of the Small Aral Sea were studied in 1999. The species composition, density, and biomass of benthic invertebrates were determined. The vertical distribution pattern and its dynamics in the course of desiccation of the sea were analyzed. It is shown that the vertical distribution of the benthos has changed substantially over the last 30 years. The biomass of the benthos in the inshore zone increased, while in the central part of the sea, benthic invertebrate populations declined and gradually disappeared. These changes are likely to be due to the accumulation of organic matter in the bottom sediments and the weakening of hydrodynamic processes, which could lead to oxygen depletion in deep water. In the 1990s, the benthic assemblages of the Small Aral Sea were relatively stable and highly productive. It is concluded that the Aral Sea is a promising area for fishery restoration.  相似文献
